Friendly Encounters: Pete Richmire and Max Unger

Friendly Encounters is a weekly feature about friends who have met celebrities.

Here is my buddy Pete Richmire again, but this time he is not pictured with a beautiful woman for once.  He is still rubbing shoulders with some Seattle stars, though.
Richmire is a busy guy.  When he is not running the game day operations for the Seattle Sounders women's soccer team, he is probably hobnobbing with the celebs of the Pacific Northwest.
Pete met former Seattle Seahawks offensive lineman Max Unger a few years ago.  Because Unger is wearing his helmet, I figured it was a shot from training camp (which it was).  I told you, Richmire is a busy guy.
Since this picture, Unger has been traded to the New Orleans Saints.  Fortunately for Seattle sports fans, Richmire is still out in Washington.
Richmire and I worked together way too briefly for the LFL360.com.  Hopefully, our travels will allow us to hook up again for drinks at least.  We have some catching up to do.  I wouldn't mind it though, if Richmire brought one (or several) of his usual beauties.

On the Beat with Michael Rooker at Wizard World Chicago 2015

Michael Rooker's first role was the title character in "Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer."  It was an intense movie and Rooker's portrayal of Henry was amazing.  It set the stage for Rooker to play many "heavy" roles as his career progressed.
I had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing Rooker at the recent Wizard World Chicago Press Reception.  Knowing Rooker lived in Chicago starting in his early teens, I decided to ask him about his favorite Chicago spots.  He gave me a solid response.  Then I asked him about answering the repetitive questions and he gave me an even better answer.
Rooker is probably one of the biggest names I have ever interviewed and he was also one of the nicest.  We joked a bit before and after the interview and even briefly at the convention the weekend after the reception.
Rooker had one of the longest lines at the convention, but nobody complained.  He is just that popular, but he is also very good with his fans.  Everyone left feeling like he gave them that special moment that everyone wants with their favorite celebrities.
I hope you enjoy my interview with Rooker.  Also, check out all of my interviews from Wizard World on the Johngy's Beat Wizard World playlist on YouTube.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #235 Stan Lee & William Shatner

Athletes get trading cards.  Why not celebrities?  At least celebrities wearing athletic jerseys should get cards.  I am doing my best to create cards for jersey-clad celebs.  Coming off of Wizard World, I am featuring two major regular celebrity guests.

Stan Lee is an icon.  Born in New York, Lee is the patriarch of the comic book and superhero world.  Does his connection to the Giants go back to their days in New York?  I cannot nitpick with this legend.  Plus, his Celebrity Jersey Card goes way back to the pre-Topps cards!
Canadian born actor William Shatner made a name for himself in Hollywood (via "space: the final frontier").  He is hugely popular at these cons.  Not being a fan of the Star Trek franchise, I have never met Shatner.  I do like the fact that I got to go to early Topps for his Celebrity Jersey Card.  That's not horrible pitching form either!

On the Beat with Kassie DePaiva at Wizard World Chicago 2015

Upon meeting Kassie DePaiva at Wizard World last week, she asked me if I was a fan of horror movies.  Being that she was in "Evil Dead II" and we were at a comic con, that was not a strange question.  My answer might have been a bit strange though, but I am not ashamed to say I was a fan of her work on tv's "One Life to Live."
Strange or not, Kassie seemed to really like that answer.  Why not?  She starred on it as  Blair Daimler Cramer Manning for over 19 years.  Our happiness at making that connection turned bittersweet though, as we both are sad that OLTL came to an end.
We talked about her role on "Days of Our Lives" and her husband James (formerly her love interest Max on OLTL).
I mentioned that I was supposed to interview her the next day, but with the hectic convention schedules, it was never set in stone.  Kassie smiled and told me she would do the interview either way.  Then on Sunday, I ran into her as she was heading to a panel.  She told me a time to come back and we would do the interview.  True to her word, she returned and we did the interview below.
I had a blast doing this interview.  It ranks among my favorite interviews of all time.  I felt like I was talking to an old friend (similar Kassie's thoughts on the allure of OLTL).  Kassie could not have been any friendlier or sweeter.
Meeting Kassie was awesome.  Talking to her and interviewing her later was a little bit surreal, but totally a wonderful experience.  Even now, I look at the screen cap of Kassie and me and I think, "Wow, I'm standing there talking to Blair>"  How cool is that?
I want to thank Wizard World for this opportunity.  I also want to thank Kassie for her time and consideration, as well as for her years of entertaining her fans.  After you watch our interview, check out KassieDePaiva.com and follow Kassie DePaiva on twitter.
Kassie DePaiva is a talented actress and a real sweetheart.  I will always fondly recall this experience with her.  What a treat!

On the Beat with Barry Bostwick at Wizard World Chicago 2015

Prior to the actual start of Wizard World Chicago 2015, I was invited to a Press Reception at Level 257 in Schaumburg, IL.  Michael Rooker, Barry Bostwick, Chris 51 and Josh Bodwell were the celebrity guests there and I was fortunate enough to interview all four of them.
Bostwick gained longtime fame from his role in "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," which has become a classic.  He co-starred in television's "Spin City," along with doing other episodic television and feature films.
I have met Bostwick several times, but this one was special.  We talked about which role of his blew up much bigger than he expected and which under the radar role of his he really loved.
We also fluffed our hair together.  Yes, you read that right.  We fluffed our hair together.  He started off our interview by commenting on my hair and followed that with suggesting we fluff our hair together.  I followed his lead d fluffed.  He's Barry Bostwick!  I am not going to snub Barry Bostwick.  Fluff away, I did!
When you see and talk to these celebs so much, they become comfortable around you and things like fluffing your hair might come up.  Why not?  Everything doesn't have to be too serious.
I really like Bostwick.  I have liked so many of his roles, too.  The more I meet and interact with him, the more I really like him.
We didn't talk about "Tales of Halloween" in this interview, because everyone else was going to ask him those questions.  In an upcoming interview with the Directors and Bostwick, we learn a bit about that latest movie project of his.  Until then, enjoy this video and then check out the "Tales of Halloween" Facebook page.

The Chicago Bandits-2015 NPF Champs!

The Chicago Bandits won the 2015 NPF (National Pro Fastpitch) championship.  The Bandits finished in second place in the regular season and eliminated the Akron Racers in the semi-finals for the Cowles Cup.
The championship series was a best of three, but the Bandits only needed two games to sweep the USSSA Pride.  Monica Abbott outdueled Cat Osterman, as the Bandits won both games 1-0.  This was an awesome series and a perfect climax to a fantastic season.
I had so much fun covering the Bandits all season.  This season was even more fun than last season (my first covering the team).  I am already looking forward to next season.
I want to thank the entire Bandits organization.  It all starts at the top with owner Bill Sokolis.  My main contact was PR Director Jacquie Boatman and everything run through her worked very smoothly.  Manager Mike Steuerwald and coach Roman Foore was helpful with information and were always up for a little softball talk.
The Bandits players were all super.  Whether it was in interviews or just ballpark chatter, they were always willing and eager to talk to us.  They really are  great bunch.
I plan on being back on the Bandits beat next season.  I am anxiously awaiting news of where the playoffs will be.  If at all possible, I will be there next year to provide on-site coverage.
Thank you also to Justin of Justin's World of Softball for bringing me on board for Bandits coverage.  He runs a great site and I am proud to be a small part of it.
Go Bandits...and thanks for everything!

Cards That Never Were: Alan Bannister 1975 & 1976 Topps

"Cards That Never Were" is a recurring series in which I create virtual trading cards to correct omissions from the various Topps sets over the years.  It is a concept I have borrowed from way to many others to list, but I thank them all.

Alan Bannister reached the major leagues with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1974.  He played mostly outfield, but a little at shortstop and 2nd base.  It really didn't matter, because he was blocked with stars at every position.  Those Philly teams were pretty loaded.  Greg Luzinski, Garry Maddox, Jay Johnstone, Larry Bowa and Dave Cash were the players ahead of Bannister at those given positions.
Although he only appeared in 50 games over those two seasons, Bannister was still regarded as a prospect.  I am surprised he did not appear on a multi-player "Rookie" card during those years.
After the 1975 season, Bannister was traded to the Chicago White Sox, where he got regular playing time.  Bannister was traded to the Cleveland Indians during the 1980 season.  The Houston Astros purchased him prior to the 1984 season and then traded him to the Texas Rangers a couple months later.  He retired after the 1985 season.
Bannister received cards in sets from 1977 through 1985.  He had no card in 1975 or 1976, until now.

Friendly Encounters: PJ Soles and Cuzz Gekas

Friendly Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

Pamela Jayne Soles, better known as PJ Soles, first crossed my radar with her appearance in Carrie.  Shortly after, I saw her in The Boy in the Plastic Bubble.  In the next few years, I saw PJ in Halloween, Rock 'N' Roll High School, Stripes and Private Benjamin.  By this point I was hooked.
I was so excited many years later when I got to meet PJ at a convention.  Since then, I have had the pleasure of meeting her many times.
Some of the best times I have had with PJ have happened at Days of the Dead.  PJ is always in a good mood, even when she had laryngitis at the last Days event.  Days lends itself to a lot of interaction with the celebrities and PJ is great with her fans.  Cuzz Gekas and I have been at every Days of the Dead in Indianapolis and we agree that PJ is one of our favorite guests ever.
The next Days event is in Schaumburg (Chicago) from November 20-22.

Dark History Con and Terence Muncy

Dark History Con is coming to Champaign, IL, on September 18-19.  I'll be there and so will Terence Muncy.
Muncy is a director and writer, known for Bikini Monsters and Midnight Matinee Psycho.  He is also an artist.  His artistic Creations can be found on the Terence Muncy Art Facebook Page.  Muncy will be meeting fans, signing autographs and selling his merchandise at Dark History Con.
The tag line for Dark History Con is "Looking at the darker side of history through True Crime and the tragic events that haunt us."  It will be filled with fascinating authors, artists, entertainers and more.
Brian Ward started Dark History Con in 2014 and I jumped on board earlier this year.  This promises to be bigger and better than last year.  It promises to be a fun-filled weekend.
With the Fighting Illini playing an away game, it will be a great weekend to get to Champaign and have some fun.  I encourage everyone to check out DarkHistoryCon.com for more info and updates.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #234 Flea & Andy Garcia

Athletes get trading cards.  Why not celebrities?  At least celebrities wearing athletic jerseys should get cards.  I am doing my best to create cards for jersey-clad celebs.

Michael Peter Balzary was born in Melbourne, Australia.  He is better known as Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.  Recently, we featured his RHCP bandmates on Reds Celebrity Jersey Cards, but here it seems Flea has gone Hollywood for his.
In a bit of symmetry, Flea's Celebrity Jersey Card teammate is Andy Garcia, who was born in Havana, Cubs (for some international symmetry).  Garcia loses a few points for putting the jersey over a dress shirt (and a jacket).  I'll let all of that slide, considering the many tough guy roles Garcia has had over he years.

Monica Abbott, The Chicago Bandits and the Cowles Cup

Sports fans and media like to use words like "great" and "superstar" to describe athletes, but too often, those superlatives are just a bit too much.  I'm a little more conservative when using those words.  It's no offense to the many star athletes I have seen, but when I am talking elite players in Chicago, I think of Michael Jordan and Walter Payton.
I have to add one more name to that list.  Monica Abbott of the Chicago Bandits is truly an elite pitcher.
In 2015, she went 16-1 with 2 saves and an ERA of .31.  She struck out 175 batters and walked only 26.  Opposing batters hit a paltry .108 against her.  She also pitched a perfect game and a no-hitter.  In the championship finals, she pitched two complete game shut outs.
As great as this season was, it was not a fluke.  For her career in the NPF, Monica is 86-34 with an ERA of .99.  That's ridiculous.  In 8 years in the NPF, she has averaged giving up less than one run per game.
Monica is a bulldog.  After pitching 9 innings for a win near the end of the season, she told me she was willing to go as long as it took to win that game.  In the NPF championship, it was all Monica.  I'm willing to bet if she lost the second game, she would have started the third game (which would have been the deciding game).
Her success goes beyond the NPF, too.  She has excelled in the Olympics and in Japan.  I even saw that game face when the Bandits were playing three exhibition games in midseason.
As I wrote, Monica is an elite player.  Monica is a once in a generation player.  You can't help but appreciate the performance and effort she gives every time.
I have been fortunate enough to watch Monica up close for the last two seasons.  I know I am witnessing greatness and I appreciate it.
I had the pleasure of posing with Monica and the Cowles Cup in the locker room 2015 championship celebration.  The best player and the trophy for the best team.  That is about as cool as it gets.
Monica Abbott, the Cowles Cup and me in Rosemont, IL-August 2015.

Culture Shock with Gary Lee Vincent

At the recent Culture Shock con, I came across Gary Lee Vincent.  Like many of the guests at Culture Shock, Vincent is interesting and multi-talented.  He is a self-described Renaissance man and, after learning more about him, I would have to agree.
Vincent is an author of several books, including "Darkened: The West Virginia Vampire Series."  "Darkened" consists of the original trilogy and a new trilogy which started in 2014.
"Darkened Hills," the first book in the original trilogy, is described on the website as "a gothic vampire novel written in the spirit of Dracula with much more sinister characters and eroticism then the old Victorian classic."  The succeeding books continue the drama and horror.  For more info on Darkened, head over to DarkenedHills.com.
As a true Renaissance man, Vincent's talents don't end there.  Last year, he debuted Burning Bulb Comics.  The first release was "The Tailsman," a full color, "bizarro-western" comic.
Vincent doesn't stop there either.  He's also a musician, having produced three albums.  One is country, one is classic rock and the third is a morph of Christian rock and country.
Too many of the guests like Vincent fly a bit under the radar at these conventions.  I am very happy to try to spread the word on this talented man...this Renaissance man!  For more info, head over to GaryLeeVincent.com.

Knowing Rowdy Roddy Piper

It was about three weeks ago that Rowdy Roddy Piper died.  Roddy was one of my childhood sports (entertainment?) heroes, who became a friend.  I eulogized the Rowdy One in my piece for Tru School Sports at Remembering Rowdy Roddy Piper.
I won't repeat what I wrote there.  Instead, I want to use this as a lesson to all of us.
I had the rare opportunity to interview Roddy for an article and for a literacy ad series.  That was the beginning of a friendship, but I could have left it there and been happy.  Instead, when I heard that he was appearing at a huge wrestling convention in Tampa, FL, I decided to go and meet my idol-turned-friend for the first time.
This was back in the day when these conventions were not common.  Roddy did not make many (any?) appearances back then.  I did not want to miss what could have been my one chance at meeting Roddy.
I have written about that magical weekend many times.  I met a lot of wrestlers, but meeting Roddy was definitely the highlight.  We had a few opportunities to talk privately.  I couldn't believe that he thanked me for including him in that literacy series.
My point is that I took the chance to meet Roddy.  Had I passed, I would never have had such great memories.  As it turns out, I probably would have met him at one of the many conventions where he has appeared since then, but I didn't know that at the time and none would have given me the one-on-one time like that one did.  Since then, I have never missed Roddy when he has appeared anywhere near me.
Conventions are pretty common these days.  Celebrities from all times and fields are appearing everywhere.  If you know one of your favorites is appearing near you, don't miss the chance to see that person.  Life is incredibly short.  Memories last forever.
Roddy gave me many great memories over the years.  He became a special friend.  I am so glad I took every chance to see him.  I will never see him again, but I will always have those memories.  Thank you Roddy.

Cards That Never Were: Jerry DaVanon 1972, 1974 & 1975 Topps

"Cards That Never Were" is a recurring series in which I create virtual trading cards in an attempt to correct omissions in various Topps sets over the years.  It is a concept I borrowed from too many to list, but I thank them all.

Most of my CTNW creations have a Chicago connection, but today's does not.  Jerry DaVanon was mostly a backup infielder and the elder half of a father-son combo (son Jeff DaVanon had no Chicago connection either).
Originally signed by the St. Louis Cardinals, DaVanon was selected by the San Diego Padres before he would reach the majors.  With the Padres, he debuted in 1969, but was traded midseason back to the Cardinals.
After the 1970 season, he was traded to Baltimore, where he played in 38 games.  He was in the minors for all of 1971 and part of 1972, before he was traded to the California Angels.  In September of 1973, he was traded back to the Cardinals, with whom he played 30 games in 1974.
Prior to the 1975 season, he was purchased and released by the Detroit Tigers, signed by the Cleveland Indians and finally traded to the Houston Astros.  He played all of 1975 and 1976 with the Astros.  After the 1976 season, he was traded again to the Cardinals, where he played 9 games before being released, ending his career.
That's quite a travel log.  In summary, he played in parts of six seasons.  Topps gave him cards in four of their sets.  They failed to give him one for 1978, but being that he was released in May, that is understandable.
The three missing years for DaVanon would be 1972, 1974 and 1975.  I am happy with these (although Night Owl Cards might be even happier with the 1974 creation).

Friendly Encounters: Rose McGowan and Mad Man Pondo

This is a weekly feature about friends who have met celebrities.

Here's my guy Mad Man Pondo again.  Lately we have run into each other at several celebrity conventions.  It makes me think we probably were at many conventions separately long before we knew each other.
Pondo can usually be seen with the lovely and talented Crazy Mary Dobson.  A mad man and a crazy woman make for a great couple.  Seriously, these two are awesome.
Today, I am featuring Pondo with another beautiful woman.  This time, he is with Rose McGowan, who costarred as Paige in Charmed and as Ann-Margret in the television miniseries Elvis, among many other roles.
This is an alert (or maybe a warning).  Keep a lookout at these celeb conventions.  You will never know who you might see as fans.  Even celebrities are normal people, too.  (Don't tell Pondo I called him a normal person, though).

On the Beat with Chicago Bandits Broadcaster Eric Katz 2015

The Johngy's Beat and Justin's World of Softball joint coverage of the 2015 Chicago Bandits brings us to Eric Katz, who joined Mike Knezevich in calling the games.  Eric is interning while attending college.
An early season search for new angles to cover for the Chicago Bandits lead me to Eric.  Eric and I exchanged several messages and worked to get together for an interview.
Scheduling conflicts delayed the interview until just recently (very late in the season), but it worked out well.  Eric had a chance to get almost the full season of experience.  I am sure he had a much better perspective on things now than he would have at the start of his internship.
Eric has done a great job for the Bandits.  As you will hear in the interview, his duties also include selling, a responsibility he gladly accepted.  Eric proved he is a team player all the way.
His work on the broadcasts was excellent, too.  With a veteran broadcaster like Mike next to him, Eric was in good hands.  Eric was relaxed, prepared and interesting on the broadcasts.
It is too early to know whether Eric will return to the Bandits next season.  I am hoping he does.  Either way, he has a bright future.  I am sure we will be hearing more from Eric down the line.  I will just be glad I can say I interviewed him way back when.
Good luck Eric and thanks for all you did.

On the Beat with Chicago Bandits Broadcaster Mike Knezevich 2015

The Johngy's Beat and Justin's World of Softball joint coverage of the Chicago Bandits brings us to their broadcaster Mike Knezevich.  The veteran broadcaster was kind enough to grant us a few minutes of his time, along with inviting me into the broadcast booth (but more on that in a future story).
Knezevich brings a wealth of broadcasting experience to the Bandits.  He also brings passion and professionalism.  I'd love to talk baseball over a pizza and cold Coke with Mike.  Actually, I shouldn't just say "baseball," because Mike's
For the last 21 years, he has been with the Regional Radio Sports Network, where he broadcasted Northwest Indiana high school sports of all sorts.  His list of accomplishments is too lengthy for this spot, but does include being inducted into the Indiana Sportswriters & Sportscasters Association (ISSA) Hall of Fame, being named Indiana Sportscaster of the Year (4 times) and being a three time winner of the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association “Indiana Sportscaster of the Year” award.  Clearly, Mike has taken home a lot of hardware over the years!
In our introduction interview with Mike, we glossed over his career, talked about his broadcasting favorites, his special moments, the Bandits and more.  It was a real pleasure talking to this pro.
I thank Mike for his time and for great listening pleasure on the Bandits broadcasts all season.  I also thank him for letting me join him for a bit in the booth.  Stay tuned for that experience.

Heather Furr and the Dominating Chicago Bliss

Tomorrow, Heather Furr will lead the Chicago Bliss as they take on the Atlanta Steam for the Eastern Conference championship of the Legends Football League.  For Heather, "lead" is the key word.
As I have previously written many times, Heather is the MVP quarterback-safety of the two time champ Bliss.  You don't get to be two time champs on luck or happenstance or with a weak spot at any position, especially quarterback.  Still, Heather comes under fire constantly from too many so called experts.
You know what I don't hear enough?  Heather is a winner!  Over the last three seasons, the Bliss have shown a dominance never seen before in the LFL.  How does 16-1-1 look?
Heather is a leader, a winner, a fearless competitor.  She can lead my team any time.  The only stat I really like is "wins" and Heather leads the LFL in that category.
She doesn't need me to say these things.  Heck, she probably doesn't even know I am writing this.  I put this out there because she deserves it, because the Bliss deserve it and because the readers need to know this.
There is only one home game left for the Bliss.  When they win tomorrow, they will next face the Western Conference champs the next Saturday in Seattle.  (I am predicting a Seattle to be their LFL Legends Cup opponent).
I'd love to see the stands at Toyota Park filled with Bliss fans.  Let's show the Bliss some love.  Let's show the LFL that Bliss Nation is strong.  Let's show Heather we support her and her team.

On the Beat with Chicago Bandits Manager Mike Steuerwald-2015 #2

The Johngy's Beat and Justin's World of Softball joint coverage of the 2015 Chicago Bandits brings us back to Manager Mike Steuerwald.  Coach Stu made his return to the Bandits bench this season and he is making his return to Johngy's Beat today.
Coach Stu's return has been very successful.  He took over a team in transition.  A few trades resulted in a team built on speed, defense and pitching.  That's not a bad foundation, especially when Monica Abbott is your ace on the mound.
The Bandits finished in 2nd place behind the USSSA Pride.  They will face the 3rd place Akron Racers in the NPF playoffs this weekend.  Those games are available on the CBS Sports channel.
The playoffs are being held in Hoover, AL.  Unfortunately, the Johngy's Beat crew could not make that trip.  The NPF playoffs will be held in an undetermined location next year and we hope it is closer to our home base, because we want to be there.
In the interview below, we talked to Coach Stu about the unfortunate collapse of the Dome and the future of the programs there.  We also talked about the season, Monica's incredible season, the playoffs and much more.
It has been a pleasure covering the Bandits all season.  Coach Stu has been great to us and we are already excited about the 2016 season.  First things first though.  Let's win the 2015 NPF championship!

On the Beat with Chicago Bandits Coach Roman Foore 2015

Today, the Johngy's Beat and Justin's World of Softball joint coverage of the 2015 Chicago Bandits features Coach Roman Foore.  The second year Assistant coach serves as Coach Stu's right hand man.
Coach Foore clearly has a passion for what he does, whether it is coaching the Bandits or coaching at Bethel University.  He is also a longtime fastpitch player.  He is also on the United States Men's National Fastpitch Team
Coach Foore can be seen hitting fungos well before game time.  He is dedicated to helping the Bandits players improve every aspect of their game.
In the interview below, Coach Foore talks about the Bandits season and how the team gelled together.  We talked about other fun stuff, including him working for his wife at Bethel.
It has been a pleasure working with Coach Foore the last two seasons.  He is always available and willing to talk to us.  I appreciate his time and consideration all season and hope to work with him again in 2016.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #233 Josh Klinghoffer & Chad Smith

Athletes get trading cards.  Why not celebrities?  At least celebrities wearing athletic jerseys should get cards.  I am doing my best to create cards for jersey-clad celebs.  Today, I feature a couple Red Hot Chili Peppers (or should I say Reds Hot Chili Peppers?.

Guitarist Josh Klinghoffer comes from Los Angeles, CA.  He joined the Red Hot Chili Peppers in 2007.  Klinghoffer gets bonus points for his Celebrity Jersey Card for wearing a full baseball uniform (although probably not regulation Reds gear) and for taking swings in the batting cage.
A native of St. Paul, MN, Chad Smith joined the Red Hot Chili Peppers in 1988.  The drummer gets extra points for taking fielding practice and appearing with a glove and baseball on his Celebrity Jersey card.  I also find the feet on the outfield wall to be humorous for some reason.

Friendly Encounters: Pete Rose and Alisa Goler

Friendly Encounters is a weekly feature about friends who have met celebrities.

I have been covering the Chicago Bandits for a couple seasons.  Last season, I had the pleasure of meeting Alisa Goler.  My interview with her can be found at On the Beat with Alisa Goler.
The former Georgia Bulldog, Goler now plays for the Pennsylvania Rebellion.  It was in PA, that Goler met Pete Rose.
I love this picture.  It represents all that is good in sports.  Rose is an all-time great (despite the controversies).  Goler got the picture with Rose and proudly put it up on social media.
It is great to see a player like Goler pictured with a baseball legend.  It is great to see she is not jaded and still gets a thrill out of meeting sports legends.  It speaks of innocence and dreams and respect.  It is one simple picture, but it says a lot to me.
Of course, you might think that maybe Goler just took a picture with a celebrity, but I seriously think it is my original thought.  If you listen to that interview, you will hear Goler is a true pro and has respect and appreciation for sports.  I am pretty sure Rose would not be just another photo for Goler.
I wish Goler a lot of luck this season and beyond (well, except when she plays against the Bandits).  I think big things are ahead for her.

Writing About the Fonz

I spent a few days in Milwaukee, WI, courtesy of the Travel Wisconsin, in conjunction with Geiger and Associates Public Relations, for Global Traveler magazine.  I was joined by a group of travel writers and we were hosted by many Milwaukee area businesses.
We spent one morning traveling around Milwaukee with the Milwaukee Food Tours   One of the stops on the tour was the Fonzie statue, aka the Bronze Fonz.
Located on the Riverwalk, the Bronze Fonz was created by artist Gerald P. Sawyer.  The statue was unveiled in 2008 and is one of the most popular destination stops in Milwaukee.
There are only a handful of television characters immortalized in statue form in the country.  The Fonz joined Mary Richards (in Minneapolis, MN) and Ralph Kramden (in Manhattan, NY) as the most popular character statues.
I will be writing more about my Milwaukee travels in the near future for Global Traveler magazine, but thought Johngy's Beat would be a great place to lead off that coverage, by featuring the Fonz.  When I was growing up, nobody was cooler than the Fonz.  When I had the pleasure to meet Henry Winkler just a few years ago, I was happy to learn that he was just as cool and so very nice.  It was a real thrill meeting Winkler and it was awesome to see his likeness in the form of the Bronze Fonz.  #TravelWI!!!

Celebrity Jersey Cards #232 Missy Franklin & Misty May Trainor

Athletes get trading cards.  Why not celebrities?  At least celebrities wearing athletic jerseys should get cards.  I am doing my best to create cards for jersey-clad celebs.  Today we feature celebrities repping jerseys of the expansion teams of 1992.

Four time Olympic swimming Gold medalist Missy Franklin was born in California.  She also swam for the Colorado Stars swim club, which is her connection to the Colorado Rockies.  Missy gets extra points for showing such exuberance on her Celebrity Jersey Card!
Three time Olympic volleyball Gold medalist Misty May hails from California.  She married former major league baseball player Matt Trainor and became Misty May-Trainor.  She posed with hubby Matt while he was with the Florida Marlins.  I believe this is our first married couple pictured on a Celebrity Jersey Card, but really, is anyone looking at Matt?

On the Beat with Jennie Finch

Jennie Finch is one of the best softball pitchers of all time.  Time magazine even dubbed her the most famous softball player ever.
She starred for the University of Arizona Wildcats (where her team won the Women's College World Series), won a Gold and a Bronze Olympic medal as part of Team USA and went on to a stellar career in National Pro Fastpitch.  Jenny went 36-8 during her five year career with the Chicago Bandits.  She is coaching at McNeese State and broadcasting for ESPN.  he also runs Jennie Finch camps for young softball players.
Thanks to the hospitality of the Chicago Bandits and the cooperation of Jennie, I had the privilege of interviewing her prior to her latest clinic at the Rosemont Dome.
Jennie talked about calling pitchers and planning pitching strategy.  She also gave her views on the future of softball in the Olympics and beyond.  Other topics included the Los Angeles Dodgers (her favorite team), her coaching and other fun stuff.
Jennie is a softball legends who transcends the sport.  She is a great ambassador for softball, the Bandits and women athletics in general.  It was a pleasure to meet and talk to Jennie.  She was extremely friendly and I greatly appreciate her time.

On the Beat with Kailee Cuico of the Chicago Bandits 2015

Today, the Johngy's Beat and Justin's World of Softball joint coverage of the 2015 Chicago Bandits features Kailee Cuico.  The infielder is the newest Bandit.
Kailee came to the NPF after a successful career at Oregon.  She is the all time leader in homers and rbi's at Oregon.  She was a three-time All-Pac 12 Honorable Mention
She played for the Akron Racers in 2014 and the start of 2015.  She joined the Bandits and has 24 at bats.  She already has two homers, five rbi's and five walks.  She has also provided steady defense.
In our interview, we talked about her adjustment in joining the Bandits, some of the differences between the teams, her coaching at Oregon and much more.
After you watch the video, check out ChicagoBandits.com for more info and updates.  Yesterday was the last home game, but there are still a handful of away games to enjoy on YouTube before the playoffs.  Go Bandits!

On the Beat with Monica Abbott of the Chicago Bandits 2015

Today, the Johngy's Beat and Justin's World of Softball joint coverage of the 2015 Chicago Bandits features pitcher Monica Abbott.  In a Johngy's Beat first, we interviewed Monica on her birthday.
The star pitcher just turned 30 on July 28.  Monica is one of the best pitchers of all time.  She truly is elite, but you would never know it by her humble actions.  Monica is just part of the team.
In the NPF, Monica had three excellent years with three teams, but she really emerged as a superstar when she joined the Bandits in 2011.  She has gone 62-17 since then.  Her list of other accomplishments is too lengthy to report here.  You can find out more about Monica on ChicagoBandits.com or MonicaAbbott.com.  Be prepared to spend some time and to be impressed.
Just a few days prior to this interview, Monica added another line on her resume.  She pitched her second NPF perfect game.  Then, a few days after that (and the day prior to this interview), Monica pitched nine innings for the win.  Finally, just Monday, Monica pitched a no-hitter!
She has also established The Monica Abbott Scholarship.  Typical Monica, she was almost apologetic that the fund is just starting and isn't super big.  I give her all of the credit in the world for helping others, for giving back, for sharing.
Monica is special on and ff the field and it has been a pleasure to see her pitch and to get to know her a bit.  I appreciate her time and consideration, as well.  Monica gets a lot of media requests and I am honored that she gave us a few minutes of her time, especially on her birthday!

On the Beat with AJ Andrews of the Chicago Bandits 2015

Today, the Johngy's Beat and Justin's World of Softball joint coverage of the 2015 Chicago Bandits features rookie outfielder A.J. Andrews.  The speedy outfielder was drafted out of LSU.
A.J. racked up some pretty impressive numbers at LSU, including 97 stolen bases in 105 attempts.  She wasn't just about speed though.  Her career numbers at LSU are a .354 batting average, with 5 HR, 95 RBI and 97 stolen bases in 105 attempts
With the Bandits, A.J. has played well in her role.  She has four stolen bases and eight runs scored, while hitting .175 in 40 at bats.  Plus, she has run down some sure hits in the outfield.
In our interview, we talked about her time at LSU, her role on the team, adjustments in the NPF and more.  A.J. wants to see the Bean in Chicago.  I'm calling on her friends to make that happen!
After you watch the video, head to ChicagoBandits.com for more info and updates.  Then, be sure to check out the Bandits in person, on television or on YouTube.  Get to a game before the season ends!

Friendly Encounters: Jim Strong and Jeni Imparato

Friendly Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

I met Jim Strong years ago.  We were on parallel paths, although he was more of a professional photog and I was more of a writer-wannabe.  Our paths crossed many times over the years.
One time Jim really saved me by photographing me with WWE Hall of Famer Tammy "Sunny" Sytch.  My camera zonked out on me and I would have been screwed.  Jim took the picture and sent it to me later.  Back then, Tammy wasn't doing many appearances and to miss the chance to get a picture would have been a lost chance.
Because of Resistance Pro, Jim and I have reconnected a bit.  More precisely, Jim has been a big help on some Johngy's Beat coverage there.
Jim probably could have his own site based on the number of celebs he has met.  I still don't know how he meets all of the musicians, one of whom is Jeni Imparato of Phosphene.  Jeni is just one of many musicians (hmm and so many of them are attractive women, too) Jim has met.
My real question is since we are working together at times for Johngy's Beat, when is Jim going to bring some of those talented, lovely musicians onto the Beat.  I really could use some musical coverage here.

On the Beat with Vicky Galasso of the Chicago Bandits 2015

Today, the Johngy's Beat and Justin's World of Softball joint coverage of the 2015 Chicago Bandits features rookie catcher Vicky Galasso.  Vicky joined the Bandits via an open tryout.
Vicky had a stellar career at Idaho State, where she was the 2013 and 2015 Big Sky Conference MVP.  As a senior, she reached base in 41 straight games.  After earning her spot on the Bandits, she became the first player from the Big Sky Conference to play in the NPF.
In 25 at bats this season, Vicky is hitting .240 with one home run and three rbi's.  With Taylor Edwards getting the majority of playing time behind the plate, Vicky has done well in her role.
In our interview, we talked about her transition to the pro league, handling the pitchers and much more.
After you watch the video, head to ChicagoBandits.com for more info and updates.  There are only a handful of home games left.  Check out the Bandits while you can!

On the Beat with Tammy Williams of the Chicago Bandits 2015

Today, the Johngy's Beat and Justin's World of Softball joint coverage of the 2015 Chicago Bandits features shortstop Tammy Williams.  The 6rh year veteran is a double threat as a defensive stalwart and an excellent hitter, too.
Tammy started every game at shortstop during her stellar career at Northwestern.  She holds several Northwestern records and received many awards and honors.  The  Bandits drafted Tammy in the second round in 2009.
In her six seasons with the Bandits, Tammy has been a joy to watch.  She is a star on the field and a fan favorite.  As of this writing, she is hitting .265 with 1 home run, 15 rbi's and 6 stolen bases, while making only one error.
In our interview, we talked to Tammy about her sports idol, her coaching career and her future with the Bandits.  Tammy was uncertain about playing next year, but she did state that if she returned, next season would be her last.
Whenever Tammy does decide to retire, it will be a sad day for the Bandits and the NPF.  It has been my pleasure to watch her up close over the last two seasons.  Tammy and Danielle Zymkowitz (2nd base) are so smooth as a combo.  It is beautiful watching them out there.  At least Bandit Nation has been able to call Tammy one of our own for her entire career.  Still, I vote for one more year!
After you watch the video, head to ChicagoBandits.com for more info and updates.  Then, be sure to check out the Bandits in person, on television or on YouTube.  There are still a few home games left!  Get to a game before the season ends!
