Seton Hall had several nicknames, including Villagers, The Alerts (the incredibly dull) White & Blue and others. Seton Hall became the Pirates after a sportswriter noted the baseball team played like a bunch of pirates. (Proof that sportswriters can be helpful in many ways.)
Unfortunately for the mascot, he remains generically named The Pirate. I'm a bit torn on this though. Usually the name would be Peter Pirate or Paul Pirate, something alliterative. I never really understood that. Why would a mascot name include what it is, like Mickey Mouse or Tony the Tiger? If the mascot's name is need to see what it is, that should be a problem. I'm not John the person. Why must it be Tony the Tiger?
Is it any better to eliminate the first name and just call a mascot by what it is, like The Pirate? That seems just as bad. I would think at some point the university would have had a naming contest. If all schools did this, we'd have The Dog, The Cougar, The Wolf and on and on. How boring.
What would I suggest? Give the mascot a name. Seton Hall's Mascot could be Peter. We know it's a pirate. End it there. At games, we'd see Peter and know it is the pirate mascot. That seems fine by me.
In any case, I met Seton Hall's The Pirate at the Big East Women's Basketball Tournament. Despite a generic and bring name, I still love mascots and had to get a picture.
