Rob Cowie had an excellent hockey career at Northeastern University, being a three time All-Hockey East All-Star. He went undrafted, but signed with the Winnipeg Jets.
He made it to the NHL with the Los Angeles Kings in the 1994-95 season, playing in 32 games. His first goal was assisted by Wayne Gretzky. That had to be pretty cool to have the Great One assist your first goal.
Cowie scored 2 goals that season and added five more in 46 games the next season. He did not make it back to the NHL after the 1995-96 season. Actually, after that, he finished his career with several years of playing in Europe. He retired after the 2003-04 season.
I met Cowie while at a Rockford IceHogs game. He was sitting next to me in the Pressbox. I learned he was now a scout for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
This is just one more reason why I enjoy covering the IceHogs. I have met some really interesting people in the Pressbox and in the post-game media session.
Rob Cowie and me in Rockford, IL-February 2015.
