Cards That Never Were is a recurring series in which I create virtual trading cards for players missed in various sets over the years. It is a concept I have borrowed from far too many to list, but I appreciate their efforts. Many other cars creations (of mine an others) can be found in the Custom Baseball Card group on Facebook (and not just baseball cards).
After an outstanding career at Penn State, running back Franco Harris was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers with the 13th pick in the 1972 NFL draft. Harris went on to a Hall of Fame career, winning four Super Bowls and rushing for 12,120 yards. Harris played 12 seasons with the Steelers and one last season with the Seattle Seahawks. At one point, he looked like a lock to beat Jim Brown's all-time rushing record, but he fell short.
For his efforts, Harris received Topps cards from 1973 through 1984. Because he only played eight games, gaining 170 yards, for the Seahawks and was retiring, Topps did not give him a card in its 1985 set. Despite that lackluster last season, I felt Harris needed one more card. Additionally, the '85 set is one of my favorites. Therefore, I had to correct the omission for this HOFer, even though Harris just looks so out of place in that uniform.
