Cards That Never Were is a recurring series in which I create virtual trading cards for players missed in various sets. It is a concept I have borrowed from far too many to list, but I appreciate all of their efforts. Many creations (not just baseball) of others can be found on the Custom Baseball Cards Facebook group.
After starring at Nebraska, quarterback David Humm was selected by the Oakland Raiders in the 5th round of the 1975 NFL draft. Humm played sparingly mostly as Ken Stabler's backup with the Raiders through the '79 season. He played a year with the Buffalo Bills, two seasons with the Baltimore Colts and finished with two seasons back with the Raiders.
All told, he played 95 games, but only started one. He had a 46% completion percentage and threw for 753 yards with three TDs and 9 INTs.
For his efforts, Humm did not appear on any Topps cards, which isn't surprising. That left a lot of missing cards and very few pictures to use. For his rookie card, I colorized a picture from his Nebraska days. It worked okay. Lynn, from the previously mentioned FB group created the '80 and '83 cards for me. I found only one picture of him with the Bills which needed colorizing. That is probably the weakest one of this bunch. It took a bit of effort, but with Lynn's help, I covered all of Humm's years.
