Mike Squires is my favorite Chicago White Sox player of all-time. Last week, I saw an unexpected, but well-deserved, tribute to Squires.
Squires played with the Sox in 1975 and 1977-85. The first baseman was known for his excellent fielding, including winning a Gold Glove in 1981. All together, Spanky played 779 games, collecting 411 hits for a .260 batting average. Mostly a platoon player, Squires split time with many others including Tony Muser, Lamar Johnson, Tom Paciorek, Greg Walker and still more.
Last week, while covering the White Sox, I meandered around the pressbox/skybox area. Large black and white photos of Sox legends lined the wall. I saw Minnie Minoso, Dick Allen, Mark Buehrle Bill Melton and many other stars from White Sox history. Then I came across a picture of Squires.
Along with being a solid player, Squires had the distinction of being the most-tenured player on the 1983 West Division champion Sox team. He was the player given the honor of raising that pennant to the rooftop of old Comiskey Park.
Aside from my personal bias, I love stories like this. Stars naturally grab the attention, but players like Squires are the backbone of baseball. I was happy to see Squires among the Sox legends.
