My latest Talking Travel interview guest is former Major League pitcher Don August. Don's recently published book, Pitching to the Corners: My Post-MLB Career Abroad, is the perfect topic for this interview series.
After an outstanding career at Chapman University, Don was selected by the Houston Astros in the first round of the 1984 MLB draft. Before reaching the majors, Don was traded in 1985 with Mark Knudson to the Milwaukee Brewers for Danny Darwin. After making his MLB debut in 1988, Don pitched four seasons with the Brewers. From 1992-95, Don pitched in the minors for four MLB organizations. He also played winter ball, as well as pitching overseas. Don also made the Team USA baseball squad who played in the 1984 Olympics.
When I read about Don's book, I saw it featured a lot of his travel stories. I figured that would make a great Talking Travel interview and it did. Don was great. He happily discussed his career, but things got even more interesting when he started talking about all of his travels. He even stated the book is as much about travel as it is about baseball. Having read reviews, I think it will end up on my best books of 2024 list on GT.
