Cards That Never Were is a recurring series in which I create virtual trading cards for players missed in various sets. It is a concept I have borrowed from far too many to list, but I appreciate all of their efforts. Other creations of mine and many others can be found in the Custom Baseball Cards Facebook group (which is not just baseball cards, despite the name).
Prior to the 1963 season, Harold "Gomer" Hodge was signed by the Cleveland Indians as an amateur free agent. (The nickname Gomer seems to have disappeared from usage.) The infielder finally made the MLB in 1971, which would be his only big league action, although he played in the minors (with Cleveland) through the 1976 season. In 80 games, he had 93 PAs, with 17 hits for a .205 average. He had 3 runs scored, one HR and nine RBIs, while playing 1st, 2nd and 3rd.
Topps ignored Hodge, but Lynn of the aforementioned FB group did not. He beat me to Hodge. Knowing I cannot do better than Lynn's handiwork, I highlight his creation and thank him for all he does.
