Fres Oquendo is a Puerto Rican former heavyweight boxer. He is also a Chicago favorite.
Before turning pro, Fes had an amateur record of 105–5: Among his many achievements, he was the 178 lb. Springfield 1990 Golden Gloves Champion, the 178 lb. Chicago City 1992 Golden Glove Champion and the Chicago City 1995 Golden Glove 201 lb.+ Super Heavyweight Champion. As a pro, Fres went 37-8 with 24 knockouts.
Of course I had heard of Fres long before I met him. When my friend Jodie told me she won a lunch with him at her high school alumni event and asked me to join, I quickly accepted. It's not often I can meet a world class boxer.
Fres was extremely nice. He shard stories of his career and life. He also told us of some of his work in the community hoping youths.
It was a lot of fun and very interesting hearing stories of his fights and charity work. I left quite impressed with Fres. Again, I thank Jodie for this one.
