Cards That Never Were is a recurring series in which I create virtual trading cards for players missed in various sets. It is a concept I have borrowed from far too many to list, but I appreciate all of their efforts. More of my creations and many great creations of others can be found in the Custom Baseball Cards Facebook group (and not just baseball cards).
After a successful career at Florida State University, quarterback Gary Huff was selected by the Chicago Bears in the second round of the 1973 NFL Draft. Huff played four seasons for the Bears and two seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Huff has the distinction of being the starting QB when the Bucs won their first game ever, snapping a 26 game losing streak.
Overall in his six years in the NFL, Huff threw for 4,329 yards, with 16 touchdowns and 50 interceptions. In all fairness to Huf, he played on some dismal teams.
For his efforts, Huff had cards in Topps sets from 1974 through '78. In '78, Huff threw only 38 passes in six games as Doug Williams emerged as the starting QB. It is understandable that Topps did not give Huff a card in the '79 set, but I still wanted to make a "career capper" for Huff.
