While standing around watching batting practice in Milwaukee, I asked a nearby gentleman a couple questions about players. I didn't recognize him at first, but that man was Gene Stephenson, baseball coach at Wichita State University.
We talked for a few minutes about his career. I mistakenly thought he had played in the majors. Then, we talked about a few other players named Stephenson, including his brother Phil, a former player with the Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres.
A moment after we parted, he came back to me and mentioned that two of his former players (Casey Blake and Braden Looper) were playing that night. They are 2 of the many players who made it to the majors after playing under Stephenson at WSU.
