Robert Englund is a classically trained actor, but is best known for his role as Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare on Elm Street movie series. Englund has stated that he liked playing Freddy, as it gives him a break from playing a nice guy.
Englund was totally a nice guy when I met him years ago. I was on one of my first real press assignments and Englund was promoting his latest movie, Freddy vs. Jason.
When it was my turn to talk with Englund, he was really outgoing. I understand he was doing promotion, but others doing promotion have been far less chatty and happy. Englund seemed to be enjoying himself. Maybe it was early in the tour or maybe he really is just that nice of a guy.
As I wrapped up my session, I asked for a photo. This is a gray area, as some celebs feel it crosses the professional line. I am not afraid to push the line at times though. There are no real rules (unlike in major league ballparks).
Anyway, I asked politely and Englund responded before I could finish my question. He grabbed me and pulled me into him, wrapping an arm around my shoulders as if we were old drinking buds. It was pretty cool of him. I think I mumbled something about him not being so scary and he responded that I shouldn't say that until I had seen Freddy vs. Jason. He got me there.
It was a great time meeting Englund. He's one of the good guys.

I've met a few horror icons but this one has them all beat! When you think of '80s horror film bad guys this one is in the top 3.
It's nice to see that he's really a class act, like he's always appeared to be. Great photo!
