My extended coverage of the State Farm Chicago Legends brings us to the two stars of the first game. The Northwestern Wildcats beat the Dayton Flyers 67-64 behind the scoring and rebounding of Sanjay Lumpkin and Vic Law.
Lumpkin had 14 points and 14 rebounds, while Law added 6 points and 9 rebounds. That is about half the rebounds and a thuird of the points for the entire team.
Law is a sophomore forward out of St. Rita. Lumpkin is a senior guard-forward from Minnesota (Benilde-St. Margaret's)
Both young athletes were poised and in control as the game neared the end. NU had a big lead which Dayton slowly chopped. NU very easily could have floded and lost "a tough game." It still would have been a good game for NU. These young men would not go under though.
Coach Chris Collins kept them calm and in control. As he said in his press session, Coach Collins literally kept voicing the time left in an attempt to just hang on and the Wildcats did just that with Law and Lumpkin leading the way.
What a thrilling win. What a great event.
Once again, I would like to thank KemperLesnik for their hospitality. It was an honor and privilege to cover the inaugural State Farms Chicago Legends. With or without press credentials, I shall be back next year!
