Cards That Never Were is a recurring series in which I create virtual trading cards for players missed in various sets. It is a concept I have borrowed from far too many to list, but I appreciate all of their efforts. Other creations of mine and many others can be found in the Custom Baseball Cards Facebook group (which is not just baseball cards, despite the name).
John James punted collegiately for Florida before signing with the Atlanta Falcons in 1972. He played with the Falcons from 1972-'81. He split '82 with the Detroit Lions and the Houston Oilers. He played with Houston through the 1984 season. In his career, he punted 1,083 times for a 40.6 average with six blocks.
For his efforts, Topps gave James cards from 1974-'82. That left 1973 and 1983-'85. Lynn from the aforementioned FB group created the '73 and '83 cards, while I did an' 85 card (cheating a bit, using the same pic as '83, but Topps did that occasionally, too, back then). Still, even with that, I am missing a pic for an '84 card. I couldn't do the same pic three years in a row, although Topps used the same Bubba Smith picture several times on his card. Bottom line is I found no pictures of him with the Lions and only one with him with the Oilers. If I find one more picture of him with Houston, I will be able to complete his card run.
