Here's the Magna Carta

Back many years ago, I was looking for something new to cover and I landed on the Windy City Rollers. I didn't realize there was actual roller derby in Chicago.
It turned into a great experience. I loved the athleticism of the ladies. While it is billed as true competition, I am sure there is some scripted stuff. Some of the fun is not knowing where that line blurs.
They also had great derby names. Some of my favorites were Bork Bork Bork, AliSin Chains and Magna Carta, but there were a lot of colorful names used. In fact, they gave me an honorary derby name of Beltin' John.
One of the coolest events was a post-season banquet. It was held somewhere downtown. I forget exactly where. The funny thing was, I had trouble recognizing the ladies dressed up and out of their helmets and uniforms. Still, I muddled through and got pictures with all I could, including the previously mentioned Magna Carta.
Since then, I discovered several other roller derby leagues in the Chicago area. I have attended games from all. Although each is unique in some way, I thoroughly enjoyed every night of derby.
WCR is still rolling. You can find more info at windycityrollers.com.
