Cards That Never Were is a recurring series in which I create virtual trading cards for players missed in various sets over the years. It is a concept I have borrowed from far too many to list, but I appreciate all of their efforts.
Orlando Gonzalez was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the 18th round of the 1974 amateur draft. He made his MLB debut in 1976, playing 28 games. He signed with the Philadelphia Phillies before the 1978 season and played in 26 games for them that season. The Oakland A's purchased his contract in the middle of the 1980 season and he played in 25 games that season. All told, the first baseman-outfielder played 79 games over parts of three seasons, hitting .238 with no home runs, five RBIs and 16 runs scored.
For his efforts, Gonzalez appeared with three other players on a 1977 Topps rookies card. That left a 1979 and 1981 card missing. Once again, when I set out to fill those voids, I found Jeff from the Custom Baseball Cards Facebook group already created the 1979 card. That left only 1981, which I made. It is also quite possible Jeff or someone else from that group made a similar 1981 card, because that group has thousands of great card creations and not just baseball cards, despite the group name.
