One year ago today, I went to a Cubs game with my friend Jim Gekas. The 1st place San Francisco Giants were in Chicago to face the woeful Cubs. The Giants went up 1-0 in the second inning. The game remained 1-0 until Aramis Ramirez tied it in the bottom of the ninth.
I hate extra inning games, but we figured we would stick around and the Giants would surely take care of this quickly. They didn't. Three innings passed and we (mostly me) decided to leave.
Big, bad mistake.
Not only did the Cubs win on a three run home run by Geovany Soto, the ball landed literally within inches of where we were sitting. In fact, if you look at the picture, you will see an empty area to the right field side of the aisle. We were in row three (the ball landed in the aisle right there).
In my defense, there were good reasons why I wanted to leave. (Here come my excuses...) It was a very hot day and we were baking in the bleachers. My car was in a time-limited parking spot. I was hungry.
Big, bad mistake.
This was a once in a lifetime chance to catch a game-winning home run. Instead, I incurred the wrath of Jim (and rightly so). Okay, I owe Jim one game-winning home run catch. Oh sure, like that will ever happen again.
