On the Beat with Jeff Samardzija of the Chicago Cubs

We had pretty much wrapped up  one of the days, when Matt spotted Cubs pitcher Jeff Samardzija coming out of the dugout and heading towards the outfield for some light running.  Matt started to approach Samardzija, when he stopped to talk to some other players on the field.
Because the press is not supposed to interrupt the players (and because it would not be polite anyway), Matt patiently waited.  Samardzija is too good of a catch to miss the chance.
The players talked for quite a bit.  Samardzija even had a couple false starts (tying back to his Notre Dame football days) towards the outfield.  I give Matt credit for standing his ground and not giving up.
Persistence paid off.  As Samardzija eventually started making his way to the outfield, Matt approached him and scored the quick interview.  The pair talked about baseball travel and Notre Dame football.
Samardzija's answers, along with the rest of the info we got from others, can be found at Travel Favorites of Baseball Greats on the Global Traveler magazine website.  All of the interviews can be found on the JohngysBeat.com YouTube channel.
