Mascot Week: J.L. Bird of the Joliet Slammers

The Joliet Slammers are an independent baseball team based out of Joliet, IL.  Their name is derived from the well known Joliet prisons.  That sounds like something out of pro wrestling.  In all fairness, it is also named for the baseball term.
The Slammers were founded in 2010.  The following year, their mascot was hatched.  In keeping with the theme, the mascot was named J.L. Bird.
Oddly, the Slammers have two mascots.  Along with J.L. Bird is Spikes, the Guard Dog.  The word that I get is that these mascots co-exist peacefully.
I had the pleasure of meeting J.L. Bird at Mascot Day at a Chicago Bandits game.  While J.L. flew the coop to make this appearance, Spikes wasn't present.  He probably was on guard duty.
You might have better luck meting both mascots at an actual Joliet Slammers game.  For more info on the team, head to JolietSlammers.com.
