Cards That Never Were is a recurring series in which I create virtual trading cards for players missed in various sets. It is a concept I have borrowed from far too many to list, but I appreciate all of their efforts. More of my creations and many great creations of others can be found in the Custom Baseball Cards Facebook group (and not just baseball cards).
After starring at Columbia, QB Marty Domres was selected by the San Diego Chargers in the 1st round of the 1969 NFL draft. Domres played three seasons with San Diego, followed by four with the Baltimore Colts, one with the San Francisco 49ers and one final season with the New York Jets. All told, in nine seasons, he started 32 games (playing in 90), completing 49.3% of his passes for 4,904 yards with 27 TDs and 50 INTs.
For his efforts, Domres received cards in 1971 and '73-'76. That left '70, '72, and '77-'78 to be made. A while back, I created the '72 and '78 cards. That still left '70 and '77.
I searched a long time for a shot of Domres with the 49ers. I finally came across a picture that was labeled Domres, but was actually Jim Plunkett wearing a #14 jersey. I posted that in the previously mentioned FB group and it was confirmed to be Plunkett, but one of the comments also included a black and white shot of Domres. I was able to somewhat colorize it to make a '77 card for Domres. I also found a decent shot to use for the '70 card to complete the Domres set.
