Cards That Never Were is a recurring series in which I create virtual cards for players missed in various sets over the years. It is a concept I have borrowed from far too many to list, but I appreciate all of them. You can find more of my creations and a lot of other great creations (and not just baseball cards) in the Custom Baseball Cards group on Facebook.
After playing quarterback for USC, Rob Hertel was selected by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 5th round of the 1978 NFL draft. The Bengals were deep at the QB position with star Ken Anderson in his prime and veteran John Reaves as his backup. Hertel got in three games, completing one pass of four attempts for nine yards. He also was with the Philadelphia Eagles at some point in 1980, but did not appear in any games. On a side note, Hertel was also selected in MLB drafts by the San Diego Padres twice and the Toronto Blue Jays, but did not sign with either team.
Obviously, Hertel dd not get a card for his efforts. Reaves didn't get a card in the '79 set. I filled that void for Hertel.
