Happy Birthday Dad

Today is my dad's birthday.  The last couple years have been rough for him.  He was essentially a 24 hour nurse for my mom during her last several months.  He endured her passing.  He has tried to be strong and go on with his life.
He seeks answers.  He looks for comfort.  He tries to find things to fill his time.  At times, he is swallowed in guilt, sadness and angst.  At times, he surrounds himself with family and friends and allows himself to enjoy the moment.
He is a complex man.  Then again, he probably thinks I am complex and I am as simple as could be, but I digress.
I know my dad will not read this.  I am not even sure why I am writing this.  Maybe I am looking for answers, too.
Over the last couple years, I have seen most of my friends lose at least one parent.  Most of us still have one left.  I think we all have a new dimension in our love and appreciation of our parents.  Not only do I see mortality, I see my dad working on making his life fulfilling.
My dad is not perfect, but he is my dad.  I will call him later today (not during Jeopardy!) and wish him a happy birthday.  I also want to publicly wish him a great day and I hope everyone joins me in sending good thoughts and prayers his way.
Happy birthday dad.  I love you.
