Brian Pillman at Squared Circle Expo 2022

Squared Circle Expo III is less than two months away. Running April 7-8 in Indianapolis, IN, SCX III promises to be the best one yet.

Last year, I met Brian Pillman Jr. Son of the late Brian Sr., young Brian is making a name for himself with All Elite Wrestling. Brian Sr. had an excellent, although tragically shortened, career.

Brian Sr. played two seasons with his hometown Cincinnati Bengals before entering pro wrestling. While he started to develop his skills in World Championship Wrestling, it was his exit from there that people still discuss. In a brilliant move, he created a "Loose Cannon" persona and convinced the WCW to release him on the idea he would pop up everywhere. Instead he signed with the WWE. Unfortunately, a carr accident limited his in-ring performances in the WWE and then tragedy struck as he died at only 35 years old.

Son Brian debuted in 2017 and has progresses nicely. Pro Wrestling Illustrated named him the 2019 Rookie of the Year. He has yet to win any titles in AEW, but most feel it is only a matter of time.

When Tony and I met him at SCX, he was extremely nice. Of course, we told him of our appreciation for his father's work and he seemed genuinely touched. He also is bigger than he appears on television. Brian Jr. is a young man, trying to make it in a tough business. He carries his father's name respectfully. Hopefully, he continues to progress.

Go to SquaredCircleX.com for more info on SCX III. Check back here for my recurring coverage and updates.

Friend Encounters: Tom Arnold and Michael West

Friend Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

I met author Michael West many years ago in Indianapolis. A native of Indiana, Michael is quite an accomplished author. He's written stand alone books, book series, short stories and more. His genre of choice is horror, which may or may not come from his children's belief that spirits reside in the woods near his home. Either way, it seems destiny for Michael to be a horror writer. A big fan of Michael's, I have several of his books on my bookshelf and am always looking for his newest works.

I have written several times about the fun I get from seeing Michael at conventions both at his booth and just when he is a patron. I might even enjoy him wandering around more. It's always interesting to see who he wants to meet and even cooler to see his joy in meeting someone.

I realize he is only human, but sometimes creators don't care to meet others for whatever reasons. Michael continues to meet his favorites though, such as when he met Tom Arnold last year. I always wonder if the celeb knows of Michael's resume at all. Obviously, when Michael meets with other authors, they know, but how much do other celebrities know? I think Michael is too modest to introduce himself as an author, unless they start chatting . Either way,. it is fun to witness his encounters or even to see them on social media.

Go to ByMichaelWest.com for more info on him and his books. Be on the lookout for Michael at conventions either at his own booth or meandering in the crowd.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #624 Bruno Mars & Hank Williams

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a weekly series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebrities wearing jerseys.

Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, Peter Gene Hernandez rose to fame as musician Bruno Mars. In his career, Mars has sold over 130 million records. Eight of his songs have reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Perhaps his greatest achievement is being on my running playlist, a feat accomplished by only a handful of singers from this century. Mars earned his Celebrity Jersey Card while wearing a Washington Capitals sweater.

Hank Williams Jr. was born in Shreveport, Louisiana. The son of the legendary Hank Sr., Hank Jr. was nicknamed Bocephus (after Grand Ole Opry comedian Rod Brasfield's ventriloquist dummy). In 2020, he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Like a lot of other musicians, Williams earned his Celebrity Jersey Card by wearing the jersey of the Nashville Predators.

On the Beat With Axel Rico

Last Saturday, I was “On the Beat” at Rockford Damage Inc. Pro Wrestling's St. Valntine's Day Massacre. The standing room only crowd at the Teamsters Hall saw an incredible night of wrestling, including the crowning of a new champ.

Damage Inc. champ Thom Latimer (formerly known as Bram in the WWE) defended his title against Axel Rico, a familiar face on the Chicago wrestling scene. Rico emerged victorious over the NWA superstar to become the new Damage Inc. champ.

While Rico was swamped with fans at the end of the night, he promised a future interview. Yesterday, Rico came through with his promise, talking to me about his win and much more. That interview is at On the Beat With Axel Rico.

Rico began with a quick recap of his start in pro wrestling and his favorite wrestlers. Then he gave me his thoughts on wrestling singles versus tag teaming. Of course, he also discussed his big win against Latimer, the whole night and Damage Inc. in general.

We finished talking about his efforts with no-kill shelters, especially Chicago Canine Rescue. Rico is donating 100 percent of all of his merchandise sales to Chicago Canine Rescue. Saturday night's collection raised more than $300.

Damage Inc. has something special happening. In a little more than one year, Damage Inc. went from debuting to filling the venue with rabid fans, who often line up well before the doors open. Owner Steve Eisman is always on hand to greet (and thank) fans. POWW wrestling veterans Jimmy Blaze and Eric Freedom are either on the card or helping others. Other wrestlers include Kyzyle, Scott Spade, Irish Pub Army and Moondog Murray. Getting the crowd revved up is ring announcer, “The Hair Extraordinaire” Mr. Ricolo.

The next show was just announced. On May 13, Damage Inc. presents Mother's Day Mayhem. Also announced was Cyndi Snow (formerly known as Bobcat) as the new Commissioner. We'll see how her reign starts on May 13. We'll also see Rico's first title defense against an opponent to be named later.

For his part, Rico is ready for anyone. He loves his shiny, new belt and he doesn't plan on letting go of it any time soon. Go to DamageIncProWrestling.com for more info on Rico and the entire promotion.

Estela Pinon and Missing the Chicago Bandits

The pandemic caused the cancellation of the 2020 and 2021 National Pro Fastpitch seasons. Then in August 2021, the NPF announced it was ceasing operations. Athletes Unlimited has helped fill the void, but nothing really matches the fun I had with the Bandits.
Estela Pinon pitched for the University of Arizona Wildcats for two seasons after transferring from Yavapai College. She finished her career with a record of 32-17 for the Wildcats, appearing in 70 games and starting 50 of them. She struck out 241 hitters in 288.1 innings. After Arizona, Estela was the Bandits first round (No. 4 overall) selection in the 2014 NPF Draft. She played one season for the Bandits, before retiring from the NPF. I did get one interview with her, which can be found at On the Beat With Estela Pinon.
Estela seems to have switched her focus from softball to baseball and with good reason. She married pitcher Ken Giles a few years ago. Ken has pitched for the Philadelphia Phillies, Houston Astros and the Toronto Blue Jays. In six seasons, he has a career record of 14-18 with 114 saves and a 2.67 ERA. He is a valuable relief pitcher.
The couple, who have one child, join a short list of two sport marriages.Former Bandits pitcher Jennie Finch is married to former pitcher Casey Daigle. There are probably a few other softball-baseball marriages, too.

David Vox Mullen and Al Snow Comedy

I was first introduced to entertainer David Vox Mullen through our mutual friend Paul Myers (PL Myers). I have interviewed him several times and enjoyed his comedy at many different venues.
Ever busy, Vox is working on several projects. One of which is the Al Snow Comedy Tour. Vox and Al are teaming up and touring the country with Al telling stories and Vox guiding the ship. It's more conversational, than standup comedy. It isn't wrestling-focused, although some stores have wrestling as a backdrop. It is a wonderful night of humor.
The pair will be back in Chicago at Zanies April 29 and I will be there with several friends.  It'll be interesting to see how it has changed since I saw them several months ago.
For more info on the Al Snow Comedy Show at Zanies, go to Chicago.Zanies.com. Follow Al and Vox on social media to get their updates. For a glimpse into what to expect at the show, check The Johngy "OR ELSE" podcast Ep: 34: "Al Snow and David Vox Mullen."

On the Beat With Monica Abbott

Yesterday, softball legend Monica Abbott announced her retirement from the game, along with the upcoming release of her autobiography. Monica was gracious enough to grant me an interview just moments after her announcement. That interview is at On the Beat With Monica Abbott.

Monica's resume is elite. Some highlights include:

  • 2x Olympic Silver Medalist
  • 5x National Pro Fastpitch champion
  • 4x NPF MVP
  • 6x Japan Softball League champion
  • 2x Pan American Gold Medalist

Of course, this is just a very small sampling of her achievements.

That entire list is too long to print here. This space is better used giving my insider look at Monica, the pitcher and the person.

I first met Monica in 2014 when she was pitching for the NPF Chicago Bandits and I was covering the team. Of course I had heard of Monica, but I never saw her pitch prior to that. Being around the Bandits almost daily, I saw her regularly during the next two seasons. She moved on to the Scrap Yard Dawgs, but I still saw her when they came to town.

Monica was a fierce competitor. After seeing her pitch into extra innings one game, I asked her how long she would have pitched. Without hesitation, she said, “Until we won” and I had no doubt she meant it.

I saw Monica pitch a no-hitter and a perfect game. After one inning of her perfect game, I said she was going to do it. Her usually spectacular assortment of pitches had just a little extra that day.

She wasn't above a little joking, too. When I was about to bat in a charity game against the Bandits, I asked her for any advice. She smiled and told me to swing early, otherwise the pitch would be in the catcher's mitt before I knew it. She was right.

During her time with the Bandits, Monica never refused an autograph or picture request. I saw her sign long after the games ended. When she returned with the Dawgs or Team USA, she did the same, despite all other demands on her time. She also was kind enough to give me interviews, even though I wasn't writing for a huge media outlet. That was just Monica.

There are a select few athletes who transcend the sport. Every time I saw Monica pitch, I knew it was something special. The more I was around her, I also realized what a special person she was, too.

In our interview, she discussed soaking in special moments of her career, growing the sport and paying it forward, throwing out ceremonial pitches and her book. Monica looked relaxed, happy and at peace.

Her book, “Rise and Shine: The Monica Abbott Story” is now available for preorder. As I stated in the interview, I already ordered mine. Now I only hope to have her sign it on a book tour. Go to MonicaAbbott.com for ordering info.

Monica retired from softball today, but this won't be the last we hear from the legend. She might not know (or at least announce) what is next for her, but I am sure she will be successful at whatever it is.

On behalf of softball fans everywhere, thank you Monica for all you have done. From me personally, thank you for your kindness and friendship over the years.

Dr. Destruction at PopCon Milwaukee 2017

Among my other favorites, I always have a soft spot for horror hosts. Whether schlocky, funny, serious, scary or whatever, I find them immensely fascinating. Dr. Destruction is one of my favorites.
Based in Wisconsin, Dr. Destruction hosts Dr. Destruction's Crimson Theatre on VPOD TV 59.3. Dr. Destruction has been delighting fans for more than 20 years.
Nicknamed "The Godfather of Goth," Dr. Destruction lists his birth year as 1905.  I'd say he is aging incredibly well. He was the Channel 14 Newcomer of the Year in 2003, one of many awards and accolades he has collected over the years.
If you are in the viewing are, I highly recommend Dr. Destruction's show. If not, look for him on YouTube to be amused. He is one of the best horor hosts.

Friend Encounters: The Ultimate Warrior and Larry Freda

Friend Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

Larry Freda is an east coast convention friend, but I have never met him. Hopefully one day that will change. Until then, I feel I know him well through all of the great pictures he posts on social media. Wrestling and NY sports teams are two of his favorite areas of conventions, but he has met many folks outside of those genres.
Today though, I feature Larry with one of the biggest names in wrestling in the late 80s. Jim Hellwig gained megafame when he joined the WWE as the Ultimate Warrior. While his career had some bumps, UW remained a big name right to his untimely death in 2014. At least shortly before he passed, UW made some sort fo peace with the WWE and was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame.
Hellwig actually changed his name to Warrior to capitalize on his fame. It probably helped him in making appearances, as the WWE might have blocked him from using the Ultimate Warrior name, but couldn't stop him from using Warrior. Legalities and feuds are funny things at times.
Larry met UW at a Legends of the Ring event. This is a huge annual wrestling event in New Jersey. Larry has met many legendary wrestlers there and I am happy to share some of his pictures here over the years.

Happy Birthday Sam!!

Today I celebrate the birthday of my youngest niece Sam. I'm sure she is celebrating out west with her friends, but I send her birthday wishes from chilly Chicago.

Sam is such an amazing young woman. She's a great daughter, niece, aunt and more. She's far more adventurous and courageous than I ever was at that age and even now. Those are just two of the qaulities I admire in her. She's also funny, intelligent, sarcastic, caring and sweet.

Sam is also a healthcare worker. A very underappreciated occupation, at least during the pandemic people started to realize how important these folks are. I thank Sam for all she does.

Knowing Sam, she'll have a lot of fun today, unless she's working. Then the fun will come before or after, but it will definitely come. I don't know her schedule, but I am wishing her a fantastic birthday today. Happy birthday. I love you Sam!

Pinfalls: WWE Elimination Chamber 2023

On Saturday, February 19, WWE presents Elimination Chamber 2023 airing on the Peacock Network live from Centre Bell in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. This will be the first Elimination Chamber held in Canada and the second outside of the United States (the first was in Saudi Arabia). As always, my podcast partner Tommy Else and I present Pinfalls, where we analyze the matches, predict the winners and discuss other possibilities.

Debuting in 2002, the Elimination Chamber was created by Triple H, although it was originally billed as coming "from the twisted mind of Eric Bischoff," as Tommy mentions. A chain-link steel structure encircles the ring, within which are several pods, each containing one wrestler. Depending on the number of participants, the specifics can change, but originally two wrestlers started the match, with one more released from the pod every five minutes. Wrestlers are elimination via pinball or submission until one remains.

This year, there are five matches (as of this writing):

Undisputed WWE Universal Championship

Roman Reigns (c) vs. Sami Zayn

Mixed Tag Team

Edge and Beth Phoenix vs. Finn Balor and Rhea Ripley

Bobby Lashley vs. Brock Lesnar

EC United States Championship

Austin Theory (c) vs. Seth Rollins vs. Johnny Gargano vs. Bronson Reed vs. Damian Priest vs. Montez Ford

EC WWE Raw Women's Championship Match at WM 39

Asuka vs. Liv Morgan vs. Nikki Cross vs. Raquel Rodriguez vs. Natalya vs. Carmella

Tommy and I agreed on all five matches at the Royal Rumble, correctly picking all. Therefore, we both started 2023 at a perfect 5-0 (nods to Curt Hennig). As always, you have to watch the video to see what Tommy and I picked, but I will reveal we have at least one difference.

We are both excited about the card. While we expect it to set up some matches at WM 39, we think the matches have meaning and aren't too predictable. Although I speak of not seeing odd twists, Tommy points out some possibilities.

Watch our video at Pinfalls: WWE Elimination Chamber, make your own picks and enjoy the show. Check back on TheEveryDayFan.com to see all of our wrestling coverage.

K. Lynn Smith at C2E2 2019

New York Comic Con is less than a month away. As always, I will be spending a lot of time "On the Beat" in Artist Alley. One of my favorite creators is K Lynn Smith.
The Michigan native is a write, artist and all-around cool person. Even her "logo" or self-caricature is cool. It is definitely her!
She is one of a handful of artists who lent their talents to produce a version of the Johngy character for me. It now hangs in my "Johngy art" corner of my condo.
I have interviewed her a few times, the last being at C2E2 2021, but I saw her after that at NYCC. Our last interview is at On the Beat With K Lynn Smith.
One of her latest endeavors is Call Itta Draw, an improvisational drawing show on social media. K Lynn joins Jay P. Fosgitt, Dan Dougherty, Seth Damoose and DJ Corchin in a fun, creatie, fascinating show. Part humor, part art, it is regular viewing for me and I am always entertained.
Go to CallIttaDraw.com and KLynnSmith.net for more info on her and her work. Also, check NewYorkComicCon.com for info and updates.

Happy Birthday Louie

Today is the birthday of my pal Louie. It's hard to believe I have known Louie for 35 years (and I haven't given him many gray hairs either).

We met at Lerner Newspapers and worked together there for 17 years. Since then, we work together at Global Traveler. Our friendship goes well beyond just working together.

Louie is my longest, closest friend. I was there when we met his future wife. I stood up at his wedding. I have seen the couple have three great boys, who are now great young men. It has been a pleasure watching his family grow.

I can never tahnk Louie for all he has done for me. He put me on his softball team, despite my lack of talent, when I really needed to be involved in something. He's been a true friend, a psychologist, mentor, joke mate and much more.

Like always, I will send Louie a simple text of a sports player who wore a jersey of his birthday. This year, it is 56, so maybe former White Sox pitcher Mark Buerhle.

Happy birthday, Louie! Have a fantastic one, buddy.

On the Beat With Erik Hodson

We are now less than two months away from Squared Circle Expo III. Running April 7-8 at Wyndham Indianapolis West, SCX III promises to surpass the first two fantastic SCX events.

SCX III is two days of wrestling-related fun, including meet-and-greets, Q&As, panels, photo ops, wrestling matches and more, including vendors with cool merchandise. One of those vendors is Erik Hodson. Yesterday, I interviewed Erik to discuss his career and SCX III, which is at On the Beat With Erik Hodson.

Interested in art most of his life, Erik was able to turn his passion into his career. He started with other subjects, but eventually started to incorporate wrestling into his work. That created a whole new audience. It also opened new possibilities at wrestling-related events, like Squared Circle Expo.

In addition to Erik, there are nearly 30 other great vendors announced, too, including Great Lakes Championship Wrestling, artist AJ Moore, Mess Bucket Comics, Tony Hunter Promotions and Collar and Elbow. If you are looking for wrestling memorabilia or merchandise, chances are some vendor will have it or at least tell you where to get it. I have picked up quite a few Roddy Piper pieces, some I didn't even know existed until I saw them at SCX. As I told Erik, I'm looking forward to picking up his Roddy Piper comic book this year.

My last update listed the first couple rounds of wrestling guest announcements. That list was packed with legends, including Hall of Famer and Olympic Gold Medal winner Kurt Angle, All Elite Wrestling's MJF, WWE legend Tatanka, podcasters and current stars Matt Cardona and Brian Myers, AEW's Jamie Hayter, WWE Hall of Famer “Big Sexy” Kevin Nash, Heath, Rhyno, current SCX champ Jake Omen, WWE Hall of Famer Lisa Marie Varon, WWE legends Tugboat/Typhoon and Brutus “The Barber” Beefcake, multi-time WWE and TNA/Impact Women's champ Mickie James, multi-time NWA champ Nick Aldis and ECW stars Al Snow, Sandman, Shane Douglas, “The Queen of Extreme” Francine and the bWo's Blue Meanie, Nova and Stevie Richards.

Recently added were WWF Hall of Famer Tito Santana, Christian, Evil Uno, AEW's Toni Storm, NJPW's Juice Robinson, WWE HOFer Sgt. Slaughter, AEW's Willow Nightingale, Red Velvet, D-Von Dudley, SoCal Val, Impact's Ace Austin, Impact's Crazzy Steve, PG-13 (J.C. Ice and Wolfie D), Shark Boy, Athena and Danhausen. That' makes 40 wrestling greats and the promoters aren't done yet. As I have previously written, although that list would be enough for any regular convention, SCX III never settles for regular. That list keeps growing.

In previous years, Saturday night was filled with great wrestling matches. My buddy Tony Feddeler and I agreed last year's matches were among the best independent wrestling matches we have ever seen. This year, the fun doubles, as a full card has been added to Friday night.

Aside from it simply being twice as much wrestling, it also creates a lot of possibilities. Actions from the first night could affect the second. It also opens the possibilities of some wrestlers now being able to make one of the nights, if they had a previous commitment on the other.

Tony will be joining me "On the Beat" all weekend at SCX III. I will recap all the fun here, but I encourage everyone to experience it firsthand.

For more info on Erik, go to ErikHodson.com. Check SquaredCircleX.com for scheduling and updates.

On the Beat With the Savannah Bananas

The Savannah Bananas have entertained baseball fans since debuting in 2016. After starting play in the Coastal Plain League (a summer collegiate league), the Bananas made a big change after last season, announcing they would only be playing “Banana Ball” starting with the 2023 season.

What exactly is “Banana Ball?” Some of the unique rules include:

  • Batters aren't allowed to leave the batters box
  • There is no bunting.
  • There are no mound visits.
  • There is a two-hour time limit on each game.
  • Foul balls caught by fans are outs.
  • Batters are allowed to “steal” first base on a wild pitch or passed ball

There are other more complicated, but just as fun, rules, such as “sprints,” formerly just walks. After a fourth ball, the defense must throw the ball to every fielder, except the pitcher, before they can attempt to make a play on the batter who advances at his own risk. There are several other innovations and I'm guessing more will come to fruition in the future.

Players are also allowed, even encouraged, to create their own bits, like behind the back catches, flips and other such actions. It's all about entertaining the fans. Attendance shows the fans are highly entertained. Sellouts are regular events wherever the Bananas play.

Make no mistake though. This is real baseball. The Bananas want to win every game. They just want to make it extra fun for everyone. The Bananas are similar to basketball's Harlem Globetrotters, without the repeated routines, but with ore focus on the actual sport.

The Bananas open their season this Friday, Feb. 17 against the Party Animals. Sort of like the Trotters play the Generals, the Bananas regularly play the Party Animals. The big difference is the Party Animals are not supporting characters in the show. They play to win. The teams also play other teams during the season, too, as they travel across the country exposing all to Banana Ball.

Today, I interviewed shortstop Ryan Cox, also known as the “trickstop” of the Bananas for his style of play. Cox played ball at a high level before joining the Bananas in 2022. Ryan explained a lot of the rules and hijinx involved.

Next I talked to rookie outfielder Vinny DeRubeis. A lifelong ballplayer like Ryan, Vinny's career was derailed with a serious eye injury that left him with vision in only his right eye. Vinny discussed his comeback, as well as his thoughts on the Bananas from a rookie's perspective.

It was fascinating learning about the Bananas. Both players gave interesting insight, yet I also feel I have just scratched the surface of fun with the Bananas.

I took away two big points from these interviews. Although Banana Ball is different (and maybe even wacky at times), the Bananas and the Party Animals play real baseball.

The other takeaway is the positivity. From my first contact with the tam through talking with Ryan and Vinny, the positive feeling is palpable and contagious.

The Bananas play in Milwaukee late in the season and I plan on being there to witness Banana Ball firsthand. Until then, I will follow the team and provide recurring coverage here on The Every Day Fan.

Check out the interviews at On the Beat With Ryan Cox and On the Beat With Vinny DeRubeis. Also, go to TheSavannahBananas.com. Also check my recurring coverage of the Bananas and other sports here, GlobalTravelerUSA.com and TheEveryDayFan.com.

Friend Encounters: Heather Drums and Jim Strong

Friend Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends meeting celebrities.

My pal Jim turned me on to Serendipity a couple years ago. Last summer, I finally saw them perform live.

On a warm summer night, Jim joined me at the courtyard by the Skokie Library. As always, we got there early and positioned ourselves up front in the center and waited.

Previously, I messaged the band, asking for a picture to accompany my story for Global Traveler. As the band assembled, I briefly talked to Heather. It was too hectic to get the band photo, but she assured me we would do it after the show.

With that, Jim and I sat back and enjoyed their performance. They had just enough banter to add extra fun, but not take away from the music. At some point, each band member had time to shine in the spotlight. The band was tight and the voals were excellent.

After the show, as promised, Heather assembled the band for our photo. With everything going on, that was very nice of her to remember. We took out pictures and talked to the band a bit.

I haven't seen them live since then, although Jim has, as you can see in the picturebut I have followed them online. I plan on catching some shows this year. They are already very good, but they also have plans to record original music. I look forward to hearing that.

Go to Serendipityband.com for more info and performance dates. Follow Serendipity on social media for even more updates and fun.

Happy Birthday JayHawk

Today is the birthday of Jason, one of my longtime pals. I am here to wish him well.

I have known Jason since he joined Lerner Newspapers in 1995. While he caused me a few extra gray hairs when he was a younger, more excitable assistant there, he also became a great friend. One of my proudest days was standing up in his wedding. I was also so happy for his happiness that day and beyond.

Like most friends, we have been through a lot together and our friendship has only grown stronger. As an older, calmer person, Jason doesn't even cause me gray hairs anymore.

Seriously though, it is so heartwarming to see him with a beautiful family. With a great wife and two adorable kids, Jason has a life he deserves.

I am certain his family is celebrating him (hopefully he even got a few new Star Wars toys). I salute him from my corner of the world. Happy birthday, JayHawk.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #623 Sue Bird & Breanna Stewart

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a weekly series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebrities wearing jerseys. To escape the Super Bowl hype, I feature two WNBA players repping an NHL team.

Sue Bird is a sports legend. She isn't just a WNBA star. Her legacy goes well beyond. Among her many accomplishments, she is a four time WNBA champ with the Seattle Storm and a five time Olympic Gold medal winner with Team USA. A native of New York, Bird proudly repped a Seattle Kraken sweater to merit her Celebrity Jersey Card.

Bird's former teammate Breanna Stewart hasn't quite reached Bird's level, but her accomplishments are impressive and growing. She is a two time WNBA champ and she also won the MVP award in 2018. Stewart signed with the New York Liberty this offseason. Like Bird, Stewart wore a Kraken sweater to earn her Celebrity Jersey Card.

The Johngy "OR ELSE" Podcast Ep. 52: "Jerry Milani"

On the latest episode of The Johngy "OR ELSE" podcast, Tommy Else and I interview longtime comic con staple and current Fan Expo PR manager Jerry Milani. That interview is at Episode 52.
I met Jerry at Wizard World 2009, his first year with that company. I think it was my second year covering WW. Jerry gave me a chance, even though I had a new website with a small following. I greatly appreciated that opportunity and worked hard to reward his faith in me.
Over the years, I have written for more sites and have a larger readership. I give credit to Jerry for granting me interviews with such celebrities as Lou Ferrigno, Jodie Sweetin, Thomas Ian Nicholas, Jason David Frank and so many others, including Lauren Holly, my all time favorite. Those interviews, which are all on my YouTube channel, helped build my following and my reputation. I am forever grateful for Jerry's help.
I also am happy we became friends over the years. We have talked comic cons and a lot more. Jerry is a big sports fan, most notably the New York Yankees.
A couple years ago, Fan Expo bought Wizard World and wisely kept Jerry on board. Although some were apprehensive about the transition, there really is little difference for the attendee between the two.
I am very proud to present our interview with Jerry. He's a great guy and I'm not just saying that so he sets me up with more celebrities at this year's Fan Expo.
Go to FanExpoHQ.com for all the info. Also, check back here for my recurring updates.

That' makes 40 wrestling greats and the promoters aren't done yet. As I have previously written, although that list would be enough for any regular convention, SCX III never settles for regular. That list keeps growing.

There are nearly 30 great vendors announced, too, including Great Lakes Championship Wrestling, artist AJ Moore, Mess Bucket Comics, Tony Hunter Promotions and Collar and Elbow. If you are looking for wrestling memorabilia or merchandise, chances are some vendor will have it or at least tell you where to get it. I have picked up qute a few Roddy Piper pieces, some I didn;t even know existed until I saw them at SCX.

SCX also has Q&A sessions, panels, photo ops and more. Ending each day is a night of wrestling. The first two SCX events had wrestling only on Saturday, but because ethe promoters are always trying to outdo themselves, they added another night of wrestling. My friend Tony and I agreed last year's wrestling was possibly the best independent wrestling show we have evenr seen.

Aside from it simply being twice as much wrestling, it also creates a lot of possibilities. Actions from the first night could affect the second. It also opens the possibilities of some wrestlers now being able to make one of the nights, if they had a previous commitment on the other.

I am excited about the whole weekend, but one thing especially cool is the bWo's appearance. This si a rare chance to meet three of the core members of the famous ECW stable. Since it is Throwback Thursday, I am featuring interviews with Stevie Richards, Nova (Mike Bucci) and Blue Meanie (Brian Heffron) from several years ago at a comic con. I post this as an example of how much fun these guys are. I expect the same at SCX III.

Those interviews are at On the Beat With Blue Meanie, Nova and Stevie Richards.

Teagan Sopczak at Loyola Softball

The Loyola Ramblers softball team opens their season on February 10, with the home opener March 25. I will be there cheering and covering the 2023 Ramblers.

Outfielder Teagan Sopczak enters her junior season. Last season, she started 44 games, while appearing in 46. She struggled a bit with batting average (.188), but I look for her to have a breakout season. She had a nine game hitting streak last season, among her highlights. The ability is there an this season I see it coming together better for her.

The Ramblers play their games at Loyola Softball Park on the north side of Chicago. There is usually an SRO crowd, although the stands don't hold as many fans as other fields. It is a very loud and supportive crowd, even in some of the frigid temperatures of March. It is always a fun time.

Thank you to Loyola Athletics for the hospitality all season. Go to LoyolaRamblers.com for more info on Loyola sports. Check my coverage on TheEveryDayFan.com.

Tori Meyer at DePaul Softball

DePaul's softball season starts tomorrow and I cannot wait. The Blue Demons are hosting the Dome Tournament in Rosemont. One of the players I look forward to seeing and following again is Tori Meyer.

A senior outfielder this season, Tori hit a solid .339 with 5 HRs. 35 runs and 34 RBIs last season. She had a very hot streak mixed in there/ I look for Tori to have an outstanding season, while being a team leader.

I must also mention Tori's parents, Corey and Kim. They have been two of the nicest parents I have encountered. They embraced and promoted my coverage, as well as simply being so friendly and welcoming at games. They have introduced me to many other DePaul folks. I greatly appreciate their friendship and support.

Thank you to DePaul for their hospitality in facilitating my coverage. Go to DePaulBlueDemons.com for more info on the Demons.

Friend Encounters: Billie Starkz and Tony Feddeler

Friend Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends meeting celebrities.

2econd Wrestling debuted a little over a year ago. Billie Starkz won a tournament to become the first 2econd champ. To be clear, Billie won THE title. With no disrespect to women (or men), 2econd Wrestling only has one title and men and women can fight for it.

It was a bold move for the new company to have women in the first title tourney and even bolder to have their first champ be a woman. In all fairness, Billie is a worthy and deserving champ. As my author pal John Cosper told me a while back, Billie is poised for stardom. It's really only a matter of time before she signs with one of the big companies.

Tony Feddeler and I agree she is one of the best on the independent scene. We are enjoying every match we see of hers, because we know she will not be here much longer.

On Sunday, February 19, we will get at least one more chance to see Billie as she returns at 2econd Wrestling's Identity Theft. Billie alone would be enough for me to go to this show, but 2econd has a lot more on the card.

2econd Wrestling has something special. They are young and growing, but each show so far has been excellent. I expect Identity Theft to be another great show. I'll be "On the Beat" as always, accompanied by Tony.

Follow 2econd Wrestling on Facebook to get all the info and updates. Check back here and TheEveryDayFan.com for my recurring coverage.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #622 Bayley & Chad Lowe

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a weekly series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebrities wearing jerseys. Today, I feature celebs repping the losers of the NFL conference championship games.

San Jose native Pamela Martinez rose to fame as Bayley in the WWE. She chose her WWE name and spelling to reflect her Bay area roots. She has held WWE singles and tag titles on multiple occasions. Bayley is a noted fan of the San Francisco 49ers, sporting various apparel. While doing a media piece in Levi's Stadium, Bayley wore #1, presumably for herself, to earn a Celebrity Jersey Card.

Born in Dayton, OH, actor Chad Lowe is the younger brother of actor Rob. Although Rob appeared on a Celebrity Jersey Card wearing an Indianapolis Colts jersey, Chad reps his home area team with a #9 Cincinnati Bengals jersey. I am assuming it is a Joe Burrow jersey, but it could be Carson Palmer.

On the Beat With Samantha Isbell

National Girls and Women in Sports Day was earlier this week, but The Every Day Fan covers women's sports all year. Today, I feature my interview with professional hockey player Samantha Isbell of the Premier Hockey Federation Montreal Force, which is at On the Beat With Samantha Isbell.

Growing up in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada, it was natural for Sam to find her way to the ice. Her start is a funny story though, involving her older sister. Once entrenched in hockey, Sam played multiple positions, while her sister became a goalie. Sam told the story, including how her sister and her would practice, but not necessarily against each other.

Because I love the answers from the other PHF players I have interviewed, I asked Sam about playing in the NHL. She echoed the sentiments of the other players. Whether or not a woman could play in the NHL is less important now that there are other options, most notably the PHF.

Sam expressed her feelings about being a part of NGWSD. She has more opportunities than women before her and she is helping to create more opportunities for future women players.

A longtime fan of the Montreal Canadiens, Sam was happy to have the opportunity to play for the Force. In 12 games, she has 2 goals and 8 assists (second most on the Force) for 10 points (third most) on only 23 shots (ninth most). She is also second on the team with a +/- of +3.

The Force is 6-7-1, good for 5th place in the 7 team league. They have been outscored 44-36. The Force are 9 points behind Connecticut in 4th place. There is still more than a month of hockey to be played.

Before ending our interview, Sam listed a few activities she does not involving hockey. One of which is spending time with her dogs, who make a couple cameo appearances in the video.

Sam had such a positive energy and like her PHF mates, she is proud and excited to be playing professional hockey. Although lesser known than some women's pro sports leagues, PHF seems to be building a solid foundation. As I told Sam, when the league expands, I hope Chicago gets a team, because I will be a season ticket holder.

The spirit of NGWSD goes well beyond one day. As a young writer, a successful women's pro hockey league wasn't in the picture. Now it is wonderful seeing athletes like Sam making it happen.

On the Beat With Ciara Bryan

Yesterday was National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD). I celebrated the day by interviewing pro softball player Ciara Bryan. That interview is at On the Beat With Ciara Bryan.

Ciara started playing as a toddler and quickly became a budding star. At Newton High School in Covington, Georgia, Ciara was named 2015 Region Player of the Year. She went on to star at the University of Georgia, where she earned more awards and accolades.

Ciara's professional career started with Athletes Unlimited Softball. From there she moved on to the new Women's Professional Fastpitch league.

On June 14, 2022, Ciara played in the first ever WPF game, leading her Smash It Sports Vipers over USSSA Pride 9-5. Ciara was 2-3 with 2 Hrs, 6 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Ciara stayed hot all season, having a (AVG/OBP/SLG/OPS) slashline of .316/.350/.526/.876, with 3 HRs, 9 RBIs and 13 runs scored. Her stats were near the top on her team in most categories, including her perfect fielding percentage.

I started the interview by wishing her a happy NGWSD, asking what it meant to her to be celebrated today. She also discussed being a part of the progression of women's sports and a role model for younger and future players.

Ciara talked about AU's unique scoring system and the effect it has on the game. She shared interesting insight into that topic.

When the WPF announced an expansion team in Texas (owned by former Major League Baseball player Brandon Phillips), it fit perfectly into her relocation plans. As she posted on social media, she manifested her her team change to happen. This season, Ciara will play for the Texas team (team name to be announced soon).

Last season, I trekked from Chicago to downstate Peoria to watch a WPF series. When I mentioned that to Ciara, she stated schedules would be coming out late February, but there should be games all over again, as the league tries to gain fans and exposure. That certainly made my day. If the WPF plays anywhere near me, I will be there. Hopefully, I'll get to see Ciara in action.

Ciara finished with revealing what she does to get away from everything. Her dogs play a big part in her life, as witness by the cameo appearances during the interview.

The WPF season starts in June and runs through August. I will update all when the schedule is released and I will cover the season here on The Every Day Fan.

Catching Up With Franco Aw Yeah!

I'm not a huge comic book guy, but I like getting ones involving my friends my friends. My "go-to" comic book shop is Aw Yeah, located a few blocks from my place in Skokie, IL. I went there long before I knew co-owners Art Baltazar and Franco Aureliani.

Writer/artist Franco might be best known (along with Art) for the DC Comics series Tiny Titans, which earned him two Eisner Awards. Of course, Franco has also worked on many other projects, including several DC Comics titles.

I eventually realized Art and Franco owned Aw Yeah Comics. I am still filling my comic book needs at Aw Yeah. A few weeks back, Franco and Art were at Aw Yeah for a going away celebration for one of their staffers. I made sure to pop in to catch up with pop.

I have interviewed Franco a few times. The latest was at C2E2 2020, right before the pandemic hit. I got my buddy, the multi-talented Joey Roth to handle the interviewer duties and he did his usual great job. That interview can be found at On the Beat With Franco at C2E2 2020.

Check out Franco on Facebook for info, news and his live drawing segments. Also, be sure to check out AwYeahComics.com.

Nick Hausman at C2E2 2017

I have to give credit to Nick Hausman. Through a lot of hard work, he has made a name for himself in the world of wrestling.
I first met Nick about 12 years ago, when he was a manager for a Chicago wrestling company. Since then, he has done broadcasting, writing and reporting in Chicago and on the national level.
In the infamous All Elite Wrestling incident involving CM Punk at the press session, Nick was the main reporter involved. CM Punk even addressed him several times.
Admittedly, Nick isn't always the most popular person in the room. Love him or hate him, you cannot ignore him, nor deny what he has done. For the record, I like Nick. He's always been great with me.
Wrestling needs folks like Nick. He gets involved in stories. He knows his stuff and gets the job done.
The next time you watch a wrestling press conference, look for Nick. You might just see him involved in more big stories.
