I have been critical of DePaul's DIBS. The name actually stands for Demon in a Blue Suit.
DePaul's mascot debuted in 1968 and was originally Billy Blue Demon. In 1999, the mascot got updates to look a bit fiercer. That's when the abomination of a name happened.
DIBS itself is kind of cool. I could deal with DIBS the mascot. I just don't like what DIBS really means. It would be something else if they called it Dibs for whatever reason and then someone retroactively made the acronym to fit. Dibs is kind of cute. It could be like "DePaul has dibs on the win" or something like that.
Maybe I am splitting hairs. I don't mind the actual name, just the meaning behind it. Of course the change was really all about marketing. I know I am not the only one who would like Billy back though. I think there even has been a petition going around the school at times.
As always, goofy name or not, I still make sure to get a picture with DIBS at Women's Basketball games.. It's a lovable mascot, who shouldn't be blamed for a bad name.
