Last Saturday, I was “On the Beat” at Rockford Damage Inc. Pro Wrestling's St. Valntine's Day Massacre. The standing room only crowd at the Teamsters Hall saw an incredible night of wrestling, including the crowning of a new champ.
Damage Inc. champ Thom Latimer (formerly known as Bram in the WWE) defended his title against Axel Rico, a familiar face on the Chicago wrestling scene. Rico emerged victorious over the NWA superstar to become the new Damage Inc. champ.
While Rico was swamped with fans at the end of the night, he promised a future interview. Yesterday, Rico came through with his promise, talking to me about his win and much more. That interview is at On the Beat With Axel Rico.
Rico began with a quick recap of his start in pro wrestling and his favorite wrestlers. Then he gave me his thoughts on wrestling singles versus tag teaming. Of course, he also discussed his big win against Latimer, the whole night and Damage Inc. in general.
We finished talking about his efforts with no-kill shelters, especially Chicago Canine Rescue. Rico is donating 100 percent of all of his merchandise sales to Chicago Canine Rescue. Saturday night's collection raised more than $300.
Damage Inc. has something special happening. In a little more than one year, Damage Inc. went from debuting to filling the venue with rabid fans, who often line up well before the doors open. Owner Steve Eisman is always on hand to greet (and thank) fans. POWW wrestling veterans Jimmy Blaze and Eric Freedom are either on the card or helping others. Other wrestlers include Kyzyle, Scott Spade, Irish Pub Army and Moondog Murray. Getting the crowd revved up is ring announcer, “The Hair Extraordinaire” Mr. Ricolo.
The next show was just announced. On May 13, Damage Inc. presents Mother's Day Mayhem. Also announced was Cyndi Snow (formerly known as Bobcat) as the new Commissioner. We'll see how her reign starts on May 13. We'll also see Rico's first title defense against an opponent to be named later.
For his part, Rico is ready for anyone. He loves his shiny, new belt and he doesn't plan on letting go of it any time soon. Go to DamageIncProWrestling.com for more info on Rico and the entire promotion.
