Adolfo and the Squared Circle Expo

I first met Adolfo Dorta about 15 years ago. He was a co-promoter of a horror-themed convention. He granted me a press pass and I did all I could to help promote the con.

Fast forward about 11 years, Adolfo left that convention to debut a wrestling convention. With him were his wife, Ed and Heather. This is the fabulous foursome, but today is all about Adolfo.

Part of me wonders how he did all of this. I know a lot about running conventions, but for Squared Circle Expo to be so successful in its debut and to gain popularity each year is an amazing achievement. I believe credit rolls uphill and all leads to Adolfo.

SCX is one of the best-run conventions of any sort. From each year's first announcements to the Sunday morning good-byes, SCX runs like a well-oiled machine, because it is one. While every con will have a wrinkle or two, I have never seen any big issues at SCX. That's because Adolfo and his crew have things so well-planned and are on site, knee-deep in the action.

I feel for Adolfo, because he works so hard at SCX. He even sacrifices his own pictures with the wrestlers because he is busy keeping things running smoothly. He is even hard for me to get for a selfie, but I work hard to get one, because he is every bit as important and memorable at each event as any of the wrestlers. I am also proud to call him friend. Surround yourself with quality peopl. Adolfo is one of the best and I will always do anything I can to help him, even if I don't go to the event.

Squared Circle Expo IV

Another Squared Circle Expo is in the books. SCX IV was the biggest and best SCX event yet.

SCX is a major wrestling convention, including a large lineup of wrestlers for meet-and-greets and two full cards of live wrestling. I can't even begin to list the wrestling legends and young superstars I have met over the years.

It is run by the fabulous foursome of Adolfo and Carrie Dorta and Ed and Heather (Owens) Gonzales. I love all of them, but this all started with Adolfo, who previously was a co-organizer of a different convention. It's hard to believe I first met Adolfo in 2011.

Adolfo has always been generous with his time and considerations. He has always shown me great hospitality at the other con and now with SCX.

Adolfo of Squared Circle Expo

With many comic and horror cons in the Chicago and midwest area, why wasn't there a wrestling convention? At one time, this area was a hotbed for pro wrestling. There were wrestling conventions on the east coast, North Carolina, Florida and elsewhere, but nothing around here.

Then Adolfo (and his crew) changed that.

A veteran of the comic con scene, Adolfo teamed with his wife Carrie and married friends Ed and Heather (semi-retired wrestlers and convention veterans) to launch Squared Circle Expo in Indianapolis in 2021. Since then it has grown in size and popularity.

SCX is everything you'd want in a wrestling convention. The two day event features 60+ wrestlers appearing for meet-and-greets, panels, Q&As and photo ops. Some even wrestle, along with enough other independent wrestlers to fill a full wrestling card.

I have never seen convention guests in such good moods. All of the wrestlers actually look like they enjoy being there. Usually, there are a handful of celebs who are polite, but not very engaging. This is not so at SCX. I have never had a bad experience with any of the wrestlers and I have met more than 250 at the first three shows.

Credit goes to Adolfo and his team. They are an amazing bunch. They are incredibly hard-working, passionate and fun. They know how to party, but they know when to work.

Adolfo Dorta and Squared Circle Expo

I met Adolfo about 12 years ago at a convention where he was one of the promoters. He was great to me for many years. He left the convention on his terms, but with unpleasant details. That's his story to tell though.

The better story is where he is now. He is one of the organizers of Squared Circle Expo, a fantastic wrestling convention which will have its third event April 7-8 in Indianapolis. I have written about SCX many times and I will continue to write about it because it is really a fun weekend.

Just walking into the Wyndham Indianapolis West and seeing Adolfo, his wife Carrie, Ed and Heather is like seeing family. That's one of the very cool parts of the convention. There's a strong family feel to the event and that comes from that foursome.

At last year's SCX, I saw an Adolfo who seemed to be more relaxed and having more fun than ever. Representing opposing wrestlers in the main event, Adolfo stunned the crowd (including me) by spearing Ed. It was  a textbook spear, worthy of the big stage, despite Ed being considerably bigger than Adolfo. I am sure Adolfo will hold that memory with pride.

SCX has too many wrestlers, vendors and events to list here. It's loaded with legends, Hall of Famers and current stars. I will be "On the Beat" all weekend.

Friend Encounters: Ric Flair and Adolfo and Carrie Dorta

Friend Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

After much anticipation, the Squared Circle Expo debuts in Indianapolis this Friday and Saturday. It promises to be two days of fantastic wrestling fun.

Two of the main folks behind the Squared Circle Expo are Adolfo and Carrie Dorta. I met Adolfo many years ago when he was one of the organizers of a different convention. He met Carrie at one of those events and they got married a couple years ago. It was  a true convention love story involving two awesome folks.

Along with some other great people, Adolfo and Carrie have organized the Squared Circle Expo. Banking on years of convention experience, excellent people skills, pure energy and a passion for wrestling, the promoters of SCE have gone all out to make it a success.

Adolfo, Carrie and the crew have brought so many great wrestling legends to other conventions. Roddy Piper was a frequent guest, while many others enjoyed the convention so much they appeared multiple times, too. The quality of wrestlers was a testament to how well they were treated by Adolfo and the staff there.

Of all the wrestling guests, it didn't get any bigger than 2015 when "The Nature Boy" Ric Flair was the headline guest. Fair's line was one of the longest I have seen, but he made every fan feel special in their interactions. Normally a blur of activity, Adolfo and Carrie did make sure to stop for a moment to get a picture with the Hall of Famer. Adolfo even flashed the famous "Four Horsemen" sign.

The announced wrestling guest list for Squared Circle Expo includes, Glen "Kane" Jacobs, Rey Mysterio, Christian, Vickie Guerrero and many more. I am quite certain there will be many wrestlers in the crowd as attendees as well. I am sure the crowd will also include many other folks involved in wrestling on some level. I can't wait, but fortunately it is only a few more days away.

Adolfo Dorta at Days of the Dead Chicago 2014

Days of the Dead returns to Indianapolis, IN July 5-7. While looking forward to this event, I am recalling some of my favorite moments over the years there.

While Adolfo Dorta never was one to brag, it is fair to say there probably wouldn't have been a Days of the Dead if not for him. It certainly would not have become what it is today.

As co-founder and co-promoter, Adolfo made DotD a special event. It wasn't just a horror con, money grab. Of course, it was about profit, but Adolfo and his tight crew, worked extremely hard to make sure everyone had a good time (and actually that prices were kept relatively low). This went from being just another comic con, to being a real destination for me. I loved seeing my friends there, as much as I enjoyed the celebrities.

At the end of last year, Adolfo announced an amicable departure from DotD. I am still sa that he is not part of this great event that he helped build, but I am happy for him and his choices. I am quite sure I have not seen the last of Adolfo on the convention scene.

While Adolfo will not be at this DotD in Indy, he will always be there in spirit for me. He has been a great friend and supporter and I would back him any time.

Friend Encounters: Danny Trejo and Carrie and Adolfo Dorta

Friendly Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

The new year marks a new era for Adolfo and Carrie Dorta and Days of the Dead. Prior to the last show in 2018, Adolfo announced he was amicably splitting from DotD.

I have a lot of mixed feelings about Adolfo's announcement. Obviously, I am very happy for Carrie and Adolfo and I wish them well in whatever direction their lives take. They are two of the coolest, funnest, most genuine people I have ever met.

I first met Adolfo at the first DotD in 2011 in Indianapolis. We worked a deal for me to cover and promote DotD. A year or so later, I met Carrie Gedeon, who became Adolfo's partner in DotD and more importantly in life, too. They are such a great couple.

Over the years though, it became much mote than me just covering an event. Days of the Dead became a big friend reunion for me. I looked forward to seeing my friends almost as much as I enjoyed meeting the celebrities. I attended every DotD in Indy and Chicago and the debut show in Louisville, too.

Adolfo and Carrie have always treated me well at DotD. They welcome me every year and I always look forward to seeing them, even though both are usually a blur at the events, because they are also two of the hardest-working people I know.

Rarely have I seen such a combination of passion, friendliness and fun. These two bust butt all year to make sure the events run smoothly. When any minor blip occurs at the events, these two quickly resolve any issue. Running a convention like this is an arduous, thankless task, but these two deserve much praise.

They always put the fans first, but they do occasionally get in a picture with a celebrity guest. Such was the case several years ago when they posed with Danny Trejo. On Facebook, Carrie made me laugh when she wrote, "people gave me a lot of sh!t about not texting, but I bet they never give Machete sh!t about not texting."

Days of the Dead will go on without Adolfo and Carrie. They would want it that way, too. Still, it will be a little empty without them. I'll miss their calming (yet insane) presence.

I think I will see both in the future and hopefully work with them in some capacity again.

No matter what the future brings though, I want to publicly thank them and wish them a lifetime of happiness. They weren't just my main contacts for a convention I cover. They are friends I consider to be class acts and top quality people.

Adolfo at Days of the Dead Indianapolis 2017

Days of the Dead Indianapolis 2018 starts today and runs through Sunday. Over the last couple weeks, I have been highlighting some of the many awesome celebrities I have met at DotD. Today, I am featuring Adolfo Dorta, the man behind this great event!

Back in early 2011, I heard about a convention debuting in Indianapolis in July. I reached out to Adolfo about covering the event. That was the beginning of a relationship that has continued to grow and many great memories.

At last year's DotD in Chicago, PL Myers and I had a 30 minute interview with Adolfo, covering his start, his passions, his thoughts on the future and more. It was fun probing into his mind and getting his insight into so many topics. That interview can be found at Hero TV 2018 Episode 3: Days of the Dead With Adolfo Dorta. We even have a short cameo by Carrie Gedeon, his partner in crime, DotD and life.

The interview was unusual in that Adolfo was still for 30 minutes. Seriously, this guy is one hard-working man, as is the entire DotD crew. They are constantly doing things to keep all running smoothly and all does run smoothly at DotD! It's an incredible event every time.

The Days crew is like one big family, because that's how Adolfo makes it. That family extends to people like me and all other fans, too. Days is always like a big friend reunion. Sometimes that part is more important to me than meeting celebrities. It is that combination which makes Days so special and it all goes right back to Adolfo.

I applaud all he has done and he has earned every bit of it. He's a good guy, who surrounded himself with good people. I am proud to be his friend and to be involved in DotD.

Adolfo At Days of the Dead Indy 2016

I should have entitled this piece "Adolfo IS Days of the Dead," because he is!  Adolfo started Days in 2011 in Indianapolis.  It was a small con, but it had a great buzz to it and you could feel it building.

Over the years, Chicago, Atlanta and Los Angeles were added to the Days locations.  With no disrespect to previous ones, each event seems to be bigger and better.  This year's debut in Louisville might have been the best Days yet.  Seriously, you can make an argument for any specific Days event and I would not fault you.  Each event is awesome.

Adolfo works tirelessly to make Days the best it can be.  A few years back he brought in Roddy Piper as a celebrity guest.  Since then, he has brought in more wrestlers, who may or may not have horror connections.  It doesn't matter to Adolfo.  He listened to his fans.  Days is a horror-themed con, but it is also a huge party for all involved.

As I walked through the entrance in Louisville, I really felt like I was going to a family reunion (a fun family reunion).  I'd see Adolfo, Carrie, Heather, Ed, Bill and allof the rest of the Dys staffers who have become my friends.  I'd also see regular fans who have become friends of mine because we always see each other at these events.

Friends, wrestlers, parties, celebrities and all sorts of other fun can be found at Days of the Dead.  It all starts and ends with Adolfo though.  I always highlight the celebs I meet.  Today, it was all about the man behind the event.  Thank you Adolfo!  See you this weekend.

Days of the Dead Indianapolis 2016

Days of the Dead Indianapolis 2016 is in the books and what a great time it was!  This was the 19th DotD event and I was at the first one (also in Indy) and 11 of them total.

Adolfo is the man behind DotD and he has an awesome crew.  Like any such convention, there will always be a glitch or two, but the DotD team smooths out glitches quickly.  Fan service is one of the main priorities at any Days con.

This year seemed to be the largest crowd ever.  It could be the presence of wrestling legend Shawn Michaels, a cumulative growth, a packed celebrity guest roster or any combo of these and other variables.  The fact is DotD is growing in size and obviously popularity.

The Days crew (including "Hardcore" Heather Owens and Ed Gonzales, two friends I've met through Resistance Pro Wrestling) is very visible.  This isn;t a con run by some nameless, faceless corporation.  This is a con for the people, run by the people.  I cannot say enough good things about Adolfo and his bunch.

Friendly Encounters: Ric Flair, Adolfo and Carrie

Friendly Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

I have featured wrestling legend Ric Flair several times here, because he is the biggest name in wrestling many friends have met.  Today though, the biggest name in wrestling is pictured with one of the most underrated names in comic cons.  Don't be surprised if Adolfo ends up as one of the biggest names in comic cons sometime down the line.
Adolfo is the man behind Days of the Dead, the little comic con that has grown into five events every year around the country (Atlanta, Chicago, Indianapolis, Los Angeles and Louisville).  Don't be surprised if more cities are added soon.  He's only been doing this for a few years and already it has grown into big events.
Right by his side is Carrie, his beautiful significant other.  These two appear to be a perfect match.  She is just as much of a blur at these conventions as he is.  Together, they are the dynamic duo who oversee a very smooth operation.
He is pretty low key.  Adolfo doesn't post tons of pictures of him with celebrities, but the ones he does are usually important ones to him.  When he posted this picture with Ric Flair, the significance of it hit me.  Adolfo and Days of the Dead are in the early years of a great run.  Check out DaysoftheDead.net to get in on the fun!

Adolfo is THE Man and Days is THE Con

My association with Days of the Dead has been well-documented here.  I think it is a great convention,  It has interesting celebrity guests, fun events, a professional staff and anything else you would want.

It always starts at the top and at the top is Adolfo.  I have known him since the first Days in Indy years ago.  He has treated me well, but it's not just me.  He treats everyone well.

The world of these such cons can be a harsh world, but Adolfo never jumps in that fray.  He just continues doing what he does best, running a top notch con.

He is unlike any other convention runner.  His staff is relatively small, but filled with great people, like Heather Owens and Ed Gonzales.  I have never had even the slightest problem at any Days event and I have had some of the best convention experiences ever at various Days events.

I have also been entertained by his Facebook posts, including some delicious food posts.  He is one of the good guys.  I appreciate all he does for me, for the attendees and for the convention scene as a whole.  I will continue to support him and Days every chance I can.

The next Days of the Dead is in Schaumburg, IL.  The headline guests include Hall of Fame wrestler Bret "The Hitman" Hart, former wrestler Chyna, Elvira, Tara Reid and PJ Soles.  This is going to be a great event.  Check out DaysoftheDead.net for ticket info and updates.

Coming Soon: Days of the Dead

Days of the Dead is like the little convention that could.  I am proud to say I have been a supporter of DotD since its debut.  I'm not really sure it can be called a "little convention" anymore though, but it still has that little convention feel (in all the right ways).

It all starts with Adolfo.  This guy busts his butt year round to make Days the best convention around.  The results can be seen at each con (Allanta, Los Angeles, Chicago and Indy).

Days brings in great guests, who actually want to be at the event.  I have never seen any celebrity at a Days event be anything less than accommodating and very fan-friendly.  Actually, I have seen several guests go above and beyond the call of duty.

I have seen music legend Lita Ford do an impromptu duet with a fan.  I have seen Rowdy Roddy Piper bring about 40 different 8x10's for sale.  I have witnessed actor John Kassir tirelessly give fans short sample of his famous "Crypt Keeper" character.  All of the above might sound like good business and it is, but stuff like that isn't seen at many conventions.

Too many times at other conventions, celebrity guests handle their autograph signings with assembly line precision.  Each fan gets about 3 seconds with their favorite celebrity.  At Days, even with the absolute biggest names like Ace Frehley of Kiss, every fan got a legitimate moment.

Check out the Days of the Dead pages on Facebook.  You'll see lively discussions.  You'll also see Adolfo engaging in many of the conversations.  To say he is hands-on is an understatement.  He is the heart, soul and brain of Days.

Coming Soon: Days of the Dead in Chicago

I have written about Days of the Dead many times and I hope to write about it many more times.  Days of the Dead is a great horror convention.  Great events run by great people deserve to be mentioned and supported.
At the last Days of the Dead in Indianapolis, I witnessed rocker Lita Ford do an impromptu duet with a fan who brought a guitar.  I have never seen anything close to that at any other convention.  Applause goes to Lita for doing this, but I must also recognize Adolfo Dorta, the Days organizer and promoter.
It is not just a coincidence that Lita was a great guest.  It was not a coincidence that Roddy Piper, Heather Langenkamp, Traci Lords, Linda Blair and countless others have been awesome guests at Days.  Adolfo wouldn't have it any other way.
Days is his con.  It's his baby.  He nurtures it and care for it.  His passion is palpable.  He has unwittingly ruffled feathers on the convention scene, but only because Days is so successful without being a corporate, over-the-top event.
Adolfo has treated me great since the debut of Days.  He asks for fair coverage and I am fair.  I just happen to love Days and have never had a bad experience there.  My coverage has been nothing but positive, because my experience has been nothing but positive.  It's just that simple.
Days will be coming to my backyard in about two weeks.  From Friday November 15 through Sunday November 17, Days will be in Schaumburg and it promises to be a blast.  For more info, check out DaysoftheDead.net.  For more fun, just go to Days and see for yourself!

Coming Soon: Days of the Dead

In a few days, Cuzz Gekas and I will be heading to Days of the Dead in Indianapolis.  We have been to both previous Days cons in Indy, making this our third Indy Days.  (We have also gone to the one Chicago Days and will be going to the second one later this year.)
Days is a great con, mostly because the main man behind it is Adolfo Dorta and he works his butt off to make sure it is a great con.  He is unlike any convention organizer I have ever met.  He cares so much about the attendees.  He is a constant blur of activity at the con.  I am not sure he even has a moment to enjoy the activities!
I go to a lot of conventions for their guest lists and Days is no exception, but I also go to support Adolfo.  The man is just that good.
I have seen others take shots at Adolfo on Facebook and elsewhere.  Sure, other convention organizers are probably scared of his success.  Right now he has four Days cons (Indy, Chicago, LA and Atlanta), but if all continues to go well, I could see him adding a couple more.  Even if he doesn't expand to other cities, he will most certainly keep improving the ones he has.
Yes, I like Adolfo and yes, other convention organizers should take notice.  He is making a big difference on the convention scene.

On the Beat with Adolfo Dorta at Days of the Dead

I spent this last weekend with Cuzz at Days of the Dead in Indianapolis (IN).  This horror convention debuted in Indy in 2011 and has since expanded to Atlanta, Los Angeles and Chicago (November 16-18, 2012).
Days of the Dead is a great convention.  They have terrific celebrity guests.  I don't know if the organizers demand it or if it is just the good celebs they bring in, but every celeb seems to really want to make it special for their fans.  The lines move slowly, because the celebs actually take the time and effort to make the moment a memorable one.  Nobody can complain about that.
One of the partners behind Days of the Dead is Adolfo Dorta, who also runs FromDuskTillCon.com, a fun site featuring horror news, interviews and more.  Dorta has a great outlook and a passion for the convention and the fans.
I had the pleasure of meeting Adolfo last year, but because he was so busy, we never connected for an interview.  This year, with a few conventions under his belt, he had just a little free time and I grabbed him during a down time.

Friendly Encounters:Adolfo Dorta Meets Todd Card

This is a weekly feature about friends who have met celebrities.

This is a unique edition of Friendly Encounters, because it features two friends who met at Days of The Dead last year, the same time and place where I met both for the first time, too.  Obviously, Days of the Dead is a happening event and it is happening again in Indianapolis on July 6-8.
Adolfo beat the odds by not only starting Days of the Dead, but making it so successful it has expanded to other cities and it keep growing.  He is a ball of energy and determination and he is also a very nice guy.
Todd is the author of Hell Cometh, a completely terrifying novel which will keep you up at night even after you have finished it.  It was the first zombie novel I have ever read.  After reading it, I was torn between never wanting to read one again and wanting to immediately read one!  It is not for the weak of heart, but it is definitely a fantastic book!  I also had the pleasure of interviewing Todd at the event.
I am really looking forward to Days of the Dead this year, but I am also excited about Days of the Dead coming to Chicago later in the year.  Johngy's Beat will be at both events, hopefully getting some new interviews from some of the great guests.

Friendly Encounters:Adolfo Meets Doug Bradley

This is a weekly series about friends who have met celebs.

One reason I am happy about the new year is there will be two Days of the Dead conventions in my relative area (one in Chicago and one in Indy).  After last year's inaugural event in Indy, I can't wait to see how the event is bigger and better.

The man behind the Days of the Dead cons is Adolfo Dorta and he is one interesting guy.  I met Dorta in Indy last year, although it was quite a blur, since he was basically a blur.  The man was constantly on the move and in demand.  He was always checking things, improving things and making everyone feel appreciated.

Days of the Dead wasn't a huge convention run by a nameless, faceless company.  Dorta was right there in the middle of it all.  As busy as he was, he also had the look of a happy, satisfied man.  I am guessing that look could be attributed to the realization of this event and the positive feedback he received from virtually everyone

After the success in Indy, a con was held in Atlanta (GA).  Shortly after that, it was announced that there would be a Days of the Dead con in Chicago in 2012.  I'll be there in Chicago and in Indy, too.  Hopefully, I'll land some good interviews, but either way, I'll have some reports here.

In the photo below, Dorta posed with Doug Bradley, a veteran actor most known for his role as Pinhead in the Hellraiser film series.  Bradley was just one of the many great celebrity guests at the con.  I didn't get to meet Bradley, but by all accounts, he was very personable and fan-friendly.

At Days of the Dead in Indianapolis

Today is the final day for the Days of the Dead convention. As much fun as conventions are, I always get sad leaving them on the final day.  Fortunately, there will be more Days of the Dead cons and I am already looking forward to the next one.
Co-Promoter Adolfo Dorta did a great job with this convention.  The guest list was great.  The events were interesting.  The situation was well organized.  I wish all cons were run as smoothly as this one. 
Tom Savini is a legend in the horror genre.  While Savini has been at several cons in the past, I somehow never managed to meet him.  Sometimes it is all about the timing.  As you can see in the photo below, Adolfo had met Savini previously.  Savini is known as the Godfather of horror makeup and special effects.
If this Days of the Dead con was any indication, Adolfo will be well on his way to becoming known as the Godfather of horror cons!
