At the Motor City Comic Con

This is a special series about my friends meeting celebs at the Motor City Comic Con.

I first met the Toth family through my initial research on the Motor City Comic Con for my blog for Global Traveler magazine.  Later that year, I met Tornado and his two daugters Layne and Peri Toth.  They were quite a family.
The young ladies are talented beyond their years.  They have about 100 projects happening at all times.  The sisters have Sisters Comics, a website detailing their past achievements, current projects and future goals.  They produce Lucky:The One Eyed Stray Dog, among other comics.  They also have illustrated a few books, as well as drawn fantastic photos of and for various celebrities.  If all of that isn't enough, the sisters are active in martial arts.
Meeting them was a real joy.  Their enthusiasm and passion for what they do is contagious.  They are great young ladies and Tornado is just as dynamic.
They are scheduled to appear at the Steel City Comic Con in late July.  If you are going, stop by their table to meet them.  You will walk away feeling great.  Unfortunately, they will not be at the MCCC this year, but they have given us a picture from a previous appearance.  How about that...Stan Lee a legend genius and Peri and Layne Toth, two young geniuses!  I love this stuff.

Friendly Encounters

This is a weekly feature highlighting friends who have met celebs.

I first discovered Tornado, Layne and Peri Toth while doing research for a piece on the Motor City Comic Con. It was a blast meeting the trio at the 2009 MCCC. They are really larger-than-life and a flurry of activity.
Layne and Peri are the sister team behind
Sisters Comics. Tornado is their aptly nicknamed father. Together they showed me a big and impressive sampling of their work.
One of the great parts of my job has been meeting people like the Toth family. I have kept up with their exploits and look forward to seeing them again in the future. I encourage everyone to check out their work on the Sisters Comics site.
For today though, I am featuring Layne and Peri presenting a bit of their artwork to veteran actor Felix Silla. Silla was very impressed and happy to pose with the art and the young ladies.

Friendly Encounters

This is another in a series of meetings of my friends and celebs.

When we last saw Layne Toth, she was posing with her sister Peri and me at the Motor City Comic Con. Knowing these two active sisters, I knew there had to be a lot of news since their last appearance here.
The creators of Sisters Comics have indeed been busy. As always, the sisters are working on their comic books. They have also been doing a lot of Taekwondo with their instructor Ron Burch of ATA Martial Arts in Haslett (MI). The sisters are also working on creating a comic book of Burch's life story, "Unbroken Glory: How It Began". Oh and several of their character properties are being worked on for graphic novels. Like I said, these sisters are definitely active young ladies.
The Toth family met Robin Williams at Michigan State University. Layne is pictured with Williams and her artwork of his famous tv character Mork.
I look forward to seeing Layne, Peri and father Tornado again in 2010 at the MCCC.

Layne and Peri Toth

One of the real pleasures I had at the 2009 Motor City Comic Con was meeting Layne and Peri Toth and their father, Tornado. The Toth sisters are talented and young comic artists (and they are also adorable).
Layne started drawing at an incredible 10 months old. At the age of 6, she started Sisters Comics with her little sister Peri. She has appeared on tv and in magazines such as Time. Peri is following closely behind in Layne's footsteps. The sisters have such a bright future and are embraced by other artists and celebrities already!
Their booth at the MCCC was filled with their work and happy fans were buying everything in sight. Tornado gave us a few samples of their work, including original 100 billion dollar artwork. I was so impressed with the quality, especially for 2 youngsters.
I am looking forward to watching these young artists develop. I want to see where Layne goes with her creation 'Lucky:The One-Eyed Stray Dog'. I am interested in Peri's work with 'See-Thru-Baby'.
Check out their website at www.SistersComics.com for all of the story and news and check back here for random updates.

Friendly Encounters

This is a special edition in a series of meetings of my friends and celebs.

While preparing for my online piece on the Motor City Comic Con for Global Traveler magazine, I encountered the Toth sisters. Layne and Peri Toth might not be the youngest fans at the MCCC, but they certainly are the youngest comic artists.
How they got to this point is really a fascinating story.
As their father, Tornado tells their story:
My mom is a musician. I was in pro boxing. My brother was a Marine. I am friends with writers, sports personalities, movie makers & media types. An oddball lot. Layne started drawing at 10 months old. She had her first gallery showing at three years old. She won her first major art award at age five. I didn't know what to do with her talent. I had comic books in the basement and showed them to her. She became hooked. At age six (in 2003), she started Sisters Comics(tm) with her li'l sister Peri and attended her first comic book convention. At seven, she started college art classes. At eight, she was published and seen on TV & in magazines such as Time. Peri followed in Layne's footsteps. In fact, Peri might just be more creative & funnier than Layne. Surrounded by great people and guided by their mentor Levi Krause, they are pretty strong for their ages and make a good team. And we have breaking news that Layne & Peri are very close to entering into an exclusive appearance contract with details pending.
Below is one of their favorite pictures from the MCCC. Actor Felix Silla is holding Layne's artwork for him. The sisters might have been excited to meet Silla, but in a few years, Silla might be telling people about his encounter with these young celebrities.
There is a lot more to the story of the Sisters Toth and I will be sharing more in future pieces. You can check out their work at www.SistersComic.com. I am really looking forward to meeting these successful sisters at the MCCC this weekend.
