Happy Birthday Cuzz!

Who is this man called Cuzz?  He's not my cousin, but he is Cuzz.
Actually, Cuzz is cousin to the brothers Gekas.  Since one of them is already Chuck, we couldn't have two Chucks, but we could have one Cuzz.  Thus Cuzz was born.
In the fifteen r so years I have known Cuzz, we have become great friends.  We share a twisted sense of humor, a passion for backup catchers, an interest in all things trivial and more.  He's helped me cover conventions and sporting events and he has been a fun road trip companion.  Most of all he's a great guy.
I feel fortunate to have Cuzz among my inner circle of friends.  I hope he has a great day.
Happy birthday Cuzz!

Cards That Never Were: Earl Morrall

This is a recurring series in which I create virtual cards for players who were omitted from the original sets.  It's a concept I borrowed from too many others to mention, but I thank them all.

Earl Morrall had a 21 year career in the NFL.  While he was mostly known as a backup, he had some brilliant moments and would definitely be one of the best backups ever.  He started 102 games, including 9 during the Miami Dolphins magical 1972 season.  Everyone remembers the perfect season, but Morrall's contributions are often overlooked.
Speaking of being overlooked, Morrall was also overlooked in several football card sets.  I have done my best to correct these omissions.
Morrall played from 1956 through 1976.  Topps gave him cards in 1957 and 1958.  The gave him one in 1960, but after then not until 1969.  They continued including Morrall from 1971-1973, skipped him in 1974 and 1975 and gave him one last card in 1976.
I created cards for Morrall for 1959, '61-'63, '66-'68, '74-'75 and even a career capper for 1977.  Yes, I know I missed 1964 and '65.  I ran out of pictures of Morrall with the Lions.  I had already reused his picture for the second card, although Topps did some of that back in those days, anyway.  I just didn't want to go to that well again.  Still, my eleven missing Morrall cards do fill in most of the gaps.

The Blue Meanie Loves Johngy's Beat

A few years ago, we interviewed wrestler The Blue Meanie at Wizard World.  That interview can be found at On the Beat With The Blue Meanie.
The Blue Meanie is Brian Heffron, a talented wrestler who has appeared in ECW and the WWF/E.  He has also wrestled on the independnt scene as well as done some acting.
Recently, Meanie was kind enough to send us a short promo video, which can be watched below.  It is classic Meanie, minus the blue makeup.
Thank you very much Brian.  We really appreciate your support!

ODB at Blizzard Brawl 2015

This isn't going to be a gratuitous promo for wrestler and sauces-maker ODB.  I'm definitely going to urge you to check out ODB's website, for all of the info on her career and her products 9shirts, barbeque sauces, hot sauces, koozies and more), but I am going beyond just being a pitchman for ODB.
ODB (also known as Jessie Kresa) is an original.  She's had an excellent career in the wrestling ring, enjoying success all over the world.  Outside of the squared circle, ODB stands out wherever she goes.
Like her sauces (unintentional plug), she is bold and lively.  It is a guaranteed good time around her.  She is not a cookie-cutter creation, although she succeeded in a world too often ruuled by such.  Don't get me wrong, though, ODB is totally stunning.  She just will never get lost in the shuffle of modern female wrestlers and that is a good thing.  As I wrote, ODB stands out completely.
She is a great convention guest.  Her booth is always hopping.  What else would you expect from her?  It's never boring.  If you don't believe me and can't get to a convention to see her, follow ODB on twitter for a lot of fun.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #296 Gary Busey & Daniel J. Stern

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a regular series in which I try to combine my love of sports trading cards with my semi-professional interest in celebrities.  Today, we continue our support of the Chicago Cubs as they pursue the dream.

Actor Gary Busey was born in Texas, but his Cubs Celebrity Jersey Card comes by way of his role in "Rookie of the Year."  Busey plaed opposite of Thomas Ian Nicholas, who as 12 year old Henry Rowengartner, helped the Chicago Cubs win the World Series.  Let's hoping this is a good luck charm.
Acto0r Daniel J. Stern was born in Maryland, but like Busey, his Celebrity Jersey Card comes by way of the "Rookie of the Year" movie.  Stern played picthing coach Phil Brickma, but for whatever reason, he also gave batting tips.  His sideburns would fit in well with the 1976 Cubs card.

I Met Jeff Conine

I meet lots of athletes and celebrities, but I gave this post the title of "I Met Jeff Conine" because I met Jeff Conine!!!
As my friends (and anyone who will listen) know, I am a huge fan of Conine.  I have been following his career since his early time in the Kansas City Royals organization (a fact which would come into play here).
When we decided to see the Marlins on our yearly baseball trip, I desperately tried to get press credentials and set up an interview with Conine.  I failed in my bid for press creds (how dare they) and therefore had no real shot at a Conine interview.
Arriving at the stadium, I was a bit bummed that I would not meet my mancrush, as Jimmy, Chuck and I walked around the park.  As we walked by the makeshift Fox booth, Chuck spotted Conine.  At that point, I would not be denied.  I would at least meet the man.
As luck would have it, he was leaving the booth and heading to the actual broadcasting area in the press box.  We raced up to him and I got a picture.
Then Jim and Chuck proceeded to tel him of my mancrush.  I did manage to mention that I started following him in his Royals days, which seemed to validate me a bit (as opposed to just some weird fanboy).
We talked for a bit as we walked him all the way to the elevators.  It was great.  I'm gushing a bit, but it's not often you meet one of your favorites and have a real chat, especially since this was so unexpected.
I appreciate Jim and Chuck for spotting Conine and helping the conversation.  I probably would have stammered a bit as I mentioned his All-Star MVP or his 2 World Series.  I might have even mentioned being in Baltimore and having Manager Sam Perlozzo not play him in the game, which was a huge disappointment.
Conine joins Manny Sanguillen, Boog Powell, Gregg Zaun and Greg Luzinski as former players we have met while on these trips.  Of course, that is not counting the dozens we met on the field with our press creds.  It's been a great 16 year run and I look forward to more adventures in the future, but it will be hard to top Conine.
Thank you to the Miami Marlins for their hospitality.  Thanks to Jeff Conine for his time.  Thanks to my friends for putting up with me and for 16 great baseball trips!

John Cusack at C2E2 2016

Sometimes, the picture needs no real introduction.  John Cusack is a legend.  I don't need to discuss his lengthy resume.  He's also a Chicagoan.
Scottie Steiner and I met Cusack at C2E2 earlier this year.  It was awesome meeting the legend, but I must admit he wasn't overly fan-friendly.
This falls into that nebulous category, where the celebrity wasn't a jerk and really did nothing offensive, but didn't make it special.  This is the fine line.  An extra smile, a quick greeting, any sort of that stuff goes a long way.
Perhaps Cusack was tired.  Maybe we were among the few who didn't get much out of Cusack.  It would take another time or several others from this time to really help me formulate my opinion.
I don't disparage Cusack.  I have had similar "disappointments" with Dean Stockwell, who I was really excited to meet.  These in no way rank with the very few bad experiences I have had with celebrities.
I just wanted more.  Cusack is a Chicago icon and seems like a good guy.  I blame him for being likeable.

Friendly Encounters: Teddy and Mark Bodek

Friendly Encounters is a weekly series featuring my friends who have met celebrities.

I'm not even sure how I first came aceross Mark Bodek.  It might have been through wrestling personality Terri Runnels.  It might also have been through other celebrities or even sports.  Mark is a pretty big fan of the Washington, D.C. teams.  Any way, Mark is a good dude and has met a lot of interestiung people.
Mark actually has done more than meet celebrities.  He has worked with many, including the aforementioned she-devil Terri.  Clearly he is doing something right (accept for cheering for those Washington teams).
Just to stick it to Mark (because I am envious of the celebrities and lovely ladies he meets, I am highlighting his encounter with "Ted" at the Nationals game.  Heck, even that gets to me.  You all know how I love a mascot.
I might have to try to join forces with Mark sometime.  This is a warning to him.  If I am ever in the nation's capitol, I'll be looking to ride his coattails.  I'll even cheer for the Nats (especially if he connects me with Ted)!

Arn Anderson at the Motor City Comic Con 2016

Arn Anderson has had an interesting wrestling career.  He was "brought" into the "Anderson" family because he bore a resemblance to the Ole Anderson.  He enjoyed success as part of the Minnesota Wrecking Crew.
They started a loose alliance with Ric Flair, Tully Blanchard and JJ Dillon.  Soon, thanks to a fantastic promo by Arn, this group became known as the Four Horsemen.  This group is the benchmark for all wrestling stables.  There have been many attempts to duplicate them, but none will ever match their success and popularity.
Arn never attained the big championship, but he won several smaller titles and many tag team championships.  "The Enorcer" seemed happy in his role.
Cuzz and I met Arn at the Motor City Comic Con 2016.  We were the first people at his booth and he immediately instructed us to "put up the four."  As silly as it might sound, I got chills.  Arn is one of the very best never to have won major heavyweight titles.
Arn was the last of the main Four Horsemen that I have met.  I can now take him off my "Most Wanted" list.  Thank you MCCCC and thanks to Arn, too!

Jake Aurelian at Dark History Con

Last year, I met Ripper the Clown at The Dark History and Horror Convention.  Coincidentally (?), I also met Jake Aurelian there.  Jake is an award-winning author and performer.  Ripper is a clown, as his name would indicate.
Where one starts and the other ends is a matter of opinion.  Either way, he (they?) are highly entertaining and interesting.
Jake's take on Ripper is that as a clown, he is creepy.  It's an interesting and unique twist on a clown.  I'd expect nothing less from Jake.
As a writer, he has published The Life & Mimes (& Zombie Apocalypse) of Ripper the Clown: The Autobiography of an Unconventional Zombie.  I have not yet read this, but it is on my list.  I have read and enjoyed Dead Wrestlers, Broken Necks & the Women Who Screwed Me Over: A Main Event of Fiction & Photography.  Jake and Ripper make a great combination.
For those not familiar with pro wrestling, I must point out that the legendary Jake "The Snake" Roberts was born Aurelian Smith.  There must be a connection there.
Today, I should be at the Dark History and Horror Con, seeing some familar celebrity guests and meeting new ones.  No other will be quite like Jake (or Ripper) though.  Unfortunately, my schedule would not permit me to make this event, but I support Dark Hisory Con, Ripper and Jake and I look forward to seeing everyone again!

Revisiting "Pieces of Talent"

I just watched Pieces of Talent again and I loved it again.  I think it is destined to be a cult classic.
I first encountered Kristi Ray (the female lead) at Days of the Dead.  The trailer caught my attention and Kristi's enthusiasm also helped.
Pieces of Talent is the story of Charlotte, an aspiring actress stuck in a job she hates, while she cares for her mother and hopes for her break.  She meets David, who happens to be a film maker.  Once Charlotte and David meet, the real story starts to be told and it is quite a story.  Charlotte agrees to be in his film project and the story takes some interesting and frightening turns.  None of the twists seem forced or unnecessary.
None of that sounds extraordinary, but it is the way the story is told, the movie is shot and the scenes are acted that makes this movie so special.  I'm not much of a film reviewer, but I know what I like.
Pieces of Talent is not like most horor films.  It has what so many horror films lack.  There is a real suspense, meaning and depth.
I don't want to give away too much of the story.  Actually, you can hear Kristi talk about everything at On the Beat with Kristi Ray.  She is totally correct when she describes Pieces of Talent as a character-driven, psychological thriller.  That's exactly why I love this movie.
There is also a sequel in the works, although it will not be done for a few years.  Until then, you can keep up with all of the info at the Pieces of Talent Facebook page.

Paul Erickson at C2E2 2016

Yesterday, I featured James Finn Garner, friend and boothmate of Paul Erickson, today's featured celebrity.  Singularly and together, these two are gold.
You can usually find Erickson dressed in some form of Hobbit gear at comic cons.  In that world of colorful characters, Erickson always manages to stand out.  It could be his outgoing personality.  He is always in front of the table, gently steering people towards any of his books.
He has written The Wobbit: A Parody, Jar Jar Wars and others.  The books are a lively romp through the various worlds they parody.  You don't have to be a fan of either "franchise" to enjoy Erickson's take.  In fact, I enjoyed Erickson's parodies more than I enjoyed the originals.  Don't tell him that though.  His massive ego will be out of control.
Actually, Erickson is pretty humble.  He lets his humor do the selling.  Occasionally he does a panel, which are as fun as they are productive in pushing his books (or at least his brand).
Obviously, I am friends with Erickson, but I don;t have to write this.  I truly enjoy his parodies and look forward to more.
You can check out his Jar Jar Wars and his other books at TheWobbitAParody.com.  You'll also find updates and other fun stuff.
Why are we eating fruit in the picture?  Nobody wants to see a hobbit eating a meatball sub.

James Finn Garner at C2E2 2016

I knew James Finn Garner was a legit best selling author, but I did not realize just how successful he has been.  At Wizard World Chicago 2016, I learned of his tours on the talk show circuit.  Aside from his satirical fiction, I'd love to see him write a book about celebrity encounters.
JFG has written the Politically Correct Trilogy, that being two "Bed Time Stories" books and one "Holiday Stories" book.  I have only read excerpts thus far, but I find them hilarious and I plan on pcking up the books at the next con (yes, start my tab, JFG).
What originally caught my eye was his Rex Koko series.  Clown Noir seemed like such a unique concept.  He describes it as "the award-winning series, where "Freaks" meets "The Maltese Falcon."  That's pretty funny and pretty accurate.  These books I own and I absolutely love and recommend.
JFG can usually be found in full Rex Koko garb at comic cons.  He usually shares booth space with friend and Parodist Paul Erickson (tomorrow's feature here).  Stop by his booth anytime for some good laughs.  Also check out JamesFinnGarner.com for all info and updates.

Heroes and Legends of Pro Wrestling VII

I had a blast at Heroes and Legends of Pro Wrestling VI, but unfortunately will not be able to attend Heroes and Legends VII on Saturday, October 22.  Still, I can support it, because it is a great show run by a good guy.
Jayson Maples runs Heroes and Legends out of Fort Wayne, Indiana.  He works very hard at putting together a great night of wrestling and wrestler appearances.  In contrast to the rough world of pro wrestling, if you are friends with Jayson on Facebook, you will see the cutest pictures of his little guy Noah.
Back to the wrestling, VII is going to be incredible.  Slated to appear are Ryback, Vicki Guerrero, Lex Luger, Nikita Koloff, The Godfather, Dutch Mantell, Raven, Swoggle, Gary Michael Cappetta and more.  That lineup alone is worth admission.  For me, Nikita by himself would have been enough to go, if I wasn't out of town.
On the wrestling card are Damien Sandow, Carlito, Ricardo Rodriguez, Tracy Smothers, Steve Lombardi and more.  A few of my friends from Resistance Pro,. including Sugar Dunkerton, Scotty Young and Jake Omen, will also be in the ring.
The Allen County War Memorial Coliseum is a great place to watch, since all seats offer excellent views.  There are plenty of good dining and hotel options nearby, too.
While I will not be at Heroes and Legends VII, I will be there in spirit.  I will also look forward to an announcement about VIII, because I'm hoping my schedule permits me to make that event.  For more info, check out HeroesandLegendsWrestling.com.

Friendly Encounters: Joe Minoso and Bridget McDonnell

Friendly Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

Bridget McDonnel was a member of the 2014 Legends Football League champion Chicago Bliss.  More importantly, she has served her country.
BMac was the "Voice of the Rookies" during that championship season.  She was always good for an interview and a laugh.  She workd very hard to earn her spot on the team and some playing time.
BMac will always be special to me.  During my quest to complete the 2014 Chicago Marathon, I dedicated various daily runs to people as a way of thanking them and holding myself accountable to them.  After completing the Marathon, many people congratulated me, but BMac's note went above and beyond.  She thanked me for my dedications and congratulated me on my accomplishment.  I appreciated everyone for reaching out, but BMac was one of a handful who I will always remember for giing a bit extra.
Bridget met Joe Minoso of Chicago Fire at Joe's on Weed Street.  The television star meets the football star.  As I always point out, more importantly, BMac has served our country and deserves applause for that.
Thank you Bridget for all you do.  I hope to see you somewhere down the line.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #295 Debbie Gibson & Jimy Sohns

This is a regular series which attempts to combine my lifelong passion for trading cards with my semi-professional interest in celebrities.  We continue riding the Cubs wave.

The 80's pop sensation Debbie Gibson hails from Brooklyn, New York.  Having recently met her, she is just as cute now as then.  I could even forgive her if she had a New York allegiance.  Fortunately, at least as far as this Celebrity Jersey Card goes, she was a Cubs fan.  This might make even a diehard Sox fan think of splitting his loyalty!
Chicago-area musician Jimy Sohns rose to fame with The Shadows of Knight.  It is always cool (or at least easier on the ears) to see musicians, especially local ones, sing during the 7th inning stretch.  It's also cool to have locals on their team's Celebrity Jersey Card!

Melanie Cruise, Toots and Me!

Melanie Cruise is the first female independent wrestler I ever followed.  Mel is a monster in the ring and a sweetheart outside of the squared circle.  She wrestles all over the world and has a huge following.  She would do great things in the big companieshere, if given the chance.
Steph Stolz (aka Toots, Toots Boots, Toots Boots Wyatt and more) is also a real sweetheart.  Her whole family is awesome.  I think she is the last member of the family I officially met.  She's a wrestling fan (of course) and a lot of fun.
I had a blast hanging with Mel and Toots at C2E2 earlier this year.  It had been too long since I had seen either of these fine ladies.  It better not be that long until I see them again!

Sara Richard (and a Johngy) at C2E2 2016

On Monday, I mentioned that artist Sara Richard did her take on the "Johngy" character.  Here it is.
Sara is an incredibly talented artist.  At the risk of sounding like a high schooler, she is just super cool, too.  I love following her adventures at Sara Richard on twitter.  I also love seeing her new artwork or finding gems in her previous body of work.
One piece I really love is her version of Johngy!  "Johngy" is hanging out with Groot, Guardian of the Galaxy.  The wonderfully gifted Sara drew me.  This is just awesome.
I really appreciate Sara doing this for me.  I also appreciate her time over the years and her friendship.
Catch her on the comic con scene if you can.  Either way, head to SaraRichard.com for all of the relevant info on Sara!

Back on the Beat With the Rockford IceHogs

We are very excited to be back on the beat with the Rockford IceHogs for the 2016-17 season.  This will be our fourth year of covering the top affiliate of the Chicago Blackhawks.  As I always say, the IceHogs of today are the Blackhawks of tomorrow.  Aside from great hockey, it is cool to see the players who will eventually become Blackhawks.
Last seaqson, the IceHogs finished 40-22-10-4 good for 3rd place in the Central Division of the Western Conference of the American Hockey League.  Unfortunately, the Grand Rapids Griffins eliminated the IceHogs from the playoffs in the first round.
The IceHogs are an easy 90 minute drive from my home and it is always worth the drive.  In addition to the hockey game, we usually find excellent food in Rockford.  Old Chicago Pizza, Stone Eagle, Dos Reales and Mary's Market are just a few of our favorite dining spots.  Of course, there are also many good food options at the BMO Harris Bank Center.  They have an excellent pulled chicken sandwich among other tasty treats.
I usually can be found in the pressbox.  After the game, I am part of the media session with the players and Coach Ted Dent.  I used to get more solo interviews, which can be found at On the Beat With the Rockford IceHogs.  Last season, the IceHogs started recording the sessions for IceHogsTV on their site IceHogs.com.  You can usually see me (or a member of the Johngy's Beat crew) chime in with a question after the regular beat reporters ask theirs.
Johngy's Beat will have interviews, stories and pictures of the IceHogs throughout the season.  If you come out to a game, look for me or let me know you're coming.  It's always good to see friends out there.
The IceHogs open their season on October 14 in Cleveland.  Until then, head over to IceHogs.com for more news, including ticket and scheduing information.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #294 Craig Sager & Craig Stadler

This is a weekly series which attempts to combine my lifelong interest in sports trading cards with my semi-professional interest in celebrities.  I continue celebrating the Chicago Cubs.

Broadcaster Craig Sager was born near Chicago and graduated from Northwestern.  His lengthy career speaks of his talent, but his courageous battle with leukemia speaks of the man.  He has continued to work and to prove that the disease will not beat him, even if it eventually takes his life.  This Celebrity Jersey Card honors Sager at his best and happiest!
California native and Colorado resident Craig Stadler has had a great golf career.  He won the Masters Tournament, along with many other tournaments and awards.  "The Walrus" earns extra points for wearing a Cubs hat for his Celebrity Jersey Card!

Cards That Never Were: Wayne Granger Topps 1975

Cards That Never Were is a recurring series in which I attempt to virtually create cards for players who were missed in specific Topps sets.  It is a concept I have borrowed from too many to list, but I appreciate all of them.
Wayne Granger had a nine year MLB career (1968-1976) during which he pitched for seven teams, including the Chicago White Sox (and their cool powder blue and red uniforms).  He went 35-35 with 108 saves during his career.  He went 0-0 in his five games with the White Sox in 1974.
Granger received cards in Topps sets from 1969 through 1974 and then one more in 1976.  He was missing from the 1975 set and he could have gotten a career capper in 1977 (for the Montreal Expos fans).
I might get around to working on a 1977 Granger card with him with the Expos, but for now, I will correct the bigger mistake and give him a 1975 White Sox card (with those cool powder blue and red uniforms).
I found a good picture and it worked very easily into the 1975 design.  This is one of the most realistic ones I have created.  I guess his 72/3 innings did not merit a 1975 car, but how could I pass on making it considering those cool red pinstripe uniforms?!

Friendly Encounters: Samantha Newark and Sara Richard

Friendly Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

Singer-songwriter Samantha Newark might be best known for her voice-over work as the speaking voice of Jem and Jerrica in Jem, the animated cartoon series.  That role started in 1985 and lasted for 65 episodes.  Thirty years later, it is still popular.  Although a singer, Newark did not do the singing for Jem, because that was decided before she auditioned.
Sara Richard is one of may favorite artists.  Her resume is lengthy (including doing her tae on the "Johngy" character).  Sara met Nwark at San Diego Comic Con.  There was more to this meeting than just two celebs.  The connection is that Sara has done cover artwork for Jem and is a big fan of Newark.
On her website and all over social media, Sara expressed her excitement at meeting Newark.  I always enjoy seeing star's reactions to meeting their favorites.  Clearly, this was one of Sara's favorites.
For those unfamiliar with Sara and her art, check out SaraRichard.com.  She is so talented.  She is also just a cool person.  She has a real enthusiasm for her work and for life in general.  It's always fun following her online, too.  You can follow her at Sara Richard on twitter.

On the Beat With Coach Kate Drohan of the Northwestern Wildcats

I am very happy to announce that Johngy's Beat will be covering the Northwestern Women's softball team starting with the 2017 season.  As an introduction for all involved, we talked to Coach Kate Drohan prior to yesterday's Fall Classic games.
As NIU Director of Digital and Social Communications Doug Meffley introduced us to Coach Drohan, I was immediately impressed.  A firm handshake, a welcoming smile and a warm greeting are always a good start.  I always realize that the coach is there to work and even a short interview can be an unwanted interruption, but Coach Drohan was ready and willing to talk to us.
Coach Drohan had a stellar playing career at Providence, being named three times to the All-Big East team.  She started her coaching career as an assistant at Boston College for 2 seasons.  She joined Northwestern's coaching staff in 1998, under the legendary Coach Sharon Drysdale.  In 2002, Drohan was named head coach.
Under Coach Drohan, the Wildcats have gone 507-297-1, but as she states in the interview below, Coach Drohan is about more than just statistics.  I felt her passion for the sport and the young ladies in the brief time we talked.  I later saw it on the field during the games of the Fall Classic.
You can learn more about Coach Drohan (including all of the statistics, records, awards etc) on her Northwestern Softball Coaching Staff Page.  Also, head to Northwestern Softball's main page to get all the info on the team, including the roster, schedule, standings and more.
I seriously could have talked to Coach Drohan for an hour.  There is so much more I want to ask her and to discuss.  I am so excited as this journey begins.  I am sure during the course of the 2017 season, I will have plenty of chances to talk to Coach Drohan and ask enough questions to fill a notebook (or at least my website and the others where this coverage will appear).  For now, I just wanted to get the ball rolling and start with an introduction of sorts for the softball team, me, and the readers.  I look forward to more softball fun, when the weather gets warm again.  I hope you all enjoy this trip, too.
Thank you to the Northwestern University Athletic Department, Doug Meffley and Coach Kate Drohan for their time and consideration.  Go 'Cats!

Jason Mewes At Wizard World Columbus 2016

Jason Mewes might be best known from his role as Jay, the vocal half of the duo Jay and Silent Bob, in longtime friend Kevin Smith's films.  Of course, during his twenty-plus year career, he has done a lot more work, too.
Mewes has been vocal about the personal problems he has had.  By all accounts, things are looking good for him these days.
He was in great spirits at both Wizard World Columbus and Chicago.  He had a lot of fans excited about seeing him and he did not disappoint.  He glady signed, talked and posed.  He even did some wacky poses and had extra silliness with some people.  He was a great guest and he seemed to enjoy it, too.

Rewinding To Tracey Gold

Tracey Gold starred as Carol Seaver for years on tv's Growing Pains.  While I would love to have been a tv star, it had to be tough growing up on tv, like Tracey did.
In high school, she suffered from dyslexia.  During the show's run, she battled anorexia.  After the show, she had a DUI charge.  Each is challenging enough without every detail being reported by the press.  Tracey and her family stood tall and survived.
I met Tracey (and her husband Roby Marshall) at several years ago.  Tracey seems to be doing great now.  We talked about her struggles and her perseverance.  She looked great and sounded very relaxed and happy.  As a side not, her husband doubled as the photog for the picture below.
In about a month, at Rewind Con I will be meeting Tracey again.  Rewind Con will have over 75 stars of the 80's, 90's and beyond.  The celebrity list is crazy good.  You can read all of the details in my story on the Patch at Rewind Con Is Coming.  I am looking forward to seeing Tracey and so many other of my favorites.  I know I will be on overload.

Undead Johnny at Days of the Dead Chicago 2015

I first met Undead Johnny several years ago when I was writing a story on The World of the Weird Monster Show, a cable show featuring "classic--and not so classic--horror and other genre films, trailers, mashups, old commercials, music videos and more combined with sketch comedy."  In short, it is a horrorific good time.
I interviewed him again when I saw him at Days of the Dead a few years ago.  That interview can be found at On the Beat with Undead Johnny at Days of the Dead 2015.
Actually Undead Johnny is Chad Byers.  He produces and is the head-writer for TWOWMS, as well as appearing on the show as Undead Johnny.
If you're in the Chicago area, check out the show on cable.  If you are not from here, check out WOWMonsterShow.com and follow the World of Weird Monster Show Facebook page for updates and more info.

Paul Orndorff at SuperFriends Fan Fest 2016

Long before the internet gave us answers, I always wondered when wrestlers were billed as being former pro football players.  I was a pretty hardcore football fan and I had never heard of most of these guys playing in the NFL.  Yet, there were some, like Wahoo McDaniel, who did legitimately play and therefore leant credibility to the rest.
Paul Orndorff was one of the first such wrestlers billed as a former NFL player..  The WWE made vague statements that he played pro football, but never gave the details.
With the invention of the internet and websites which have every possible bit of minutea, it is now possible to verify (or disprove) these statements.  So what is the case with Mr. Wonderful?
The fact is he was a pretty good running back with the University of Tampa.  He was drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the 12th round of the 1973 draft.  (He could have gotten handoffs from Archie Manning.)
He did not make the team, due to injuries.  Unfortunately, no other real details are available.  Players from the 12th round were not front page news.  Seventeen of the 26 players drafted in the 12th round did not make the NFL.  Life stories and updates are usually not available for these men, as they pretty much just went into a regular job.
Orndorff was different.  First he had a brief stint in the WFL with the Jacksonville Sharks.  He did appear to actually play for them, too.
Of course, Orndorff would go on to have a very successful wrestling career.  While he never won the big title in the WWE, he was one of the top guys for a while in the 1980's.  We must remember that titles were not passed around so quickly back then.
Orndorff had been on my "want list" for a long time.  I finally met him at David Herro's SuperFriends Fan Fest.  Mr. Wonderful was actually quite wonderful.  He apologized for remaining seated, citing knee issues.  We talked a bit about his wrestling career and I did mention his football career.  He responded by talking about his time at Tampa (which is pdefinitely where he had the most succcess).
The SuperFriends Fan Fest was a great event.  Like all of Herro's events, it was well-run and a fun time.  Additionally, it allowed me to take one off of my want list and to dig a little deeper into the whole NFL: issue.

Scouting With John Van Boxmeer

I admit it.  One of the coolest parts of covering the Rockford IceHogs is sitting in the Press Box with the writers and scouts.  Often times, the scouts are ex-NHL players.  Sometimes I run across an ex-Blackhawk, a hockey legend or one of my old favorites.  Such was the case at the last regular season game for the IceHogs, when John Van Boxmeer sat next to me.
Van Boxmeer was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens and he played parts of four seasons with that team.  In the middle of the 1976-77 season, he was traded to the Colorado Rockies, where he played for 2.5 seasons.  He was traded to the Buffalo Sabres, where he played four seasons, before finishing his NHL career with one season with the Quebec Nordiques.
He was a big, rugged defenseman, but he wasn't a goon.  On the talent-rich Canadiens, Van Boxmeer struggled to get playing time and he asked Scotty Bowman for a trade.  Years later, Bowman (who had moved onto the Buffalo Sabres) acquired Van Boxmeer from the Rockies.
In the Press Box, professionalism dictates that we are all there to do our jobs.  It is always a bit sticky asking for a photo with these ex-players.  I would never ask for autographs, but I do try to start a conversation.  If it goes well, I ask for the picture.  I have never been denied, although I don't ask that often.
For his part, Van Boxmeer was extremely nice.  He now scouts for the Sabres.  We talked a bit of hockey, IceHogs and Blackhawks.
I immediately texted it to a couple hockey friends.  My inner hockey child was in full mode.  I still remember getting his card in a pack of hockey cards back in the day.  Good memories then and a new good memory thanks to the IceHogs.

Friendly Encounters: Carlos Rodon and Glen Rylko

Friendly Encounters is a weekly series featuring my friends who have met celebrities.

Darn Glen Rylko!  He scooped me again by meeting White Sox pitcher Carlos Rodon.  It's not the first time he has gotten a great score.  In fact, he had a few in addition to Rodon on this day.
Glen and I have crossed paths many times at wrestling events and other celebrity conventions.  We have many of the same targets.
Glen does crush me in cool memorabilia.  He's got wrestling and baseball programs going back many years.  I always enjoy seeing him post these collectibles on Facebook.
I also enjoy seeing Glen and his wife at various charity events and runs.  One such event was where he met Rodon and a few other White Sox players.  It seems Glen is out all over the place meeting celebs.
I miss seeing him regularly at wrestling events.  Things change and he is busy enough.  At least I am happy to reconnect with him at celebrity conventions (as long as he isn't outscoring me with his celebrity pictures).  Just kidding Glen.  It's always good seeing you and your wife!

Cards That Never Were: Bill Bennett Topps 1979-80 & 1980-81

This is a recurring series in which I create cards for players who were missed in the sports card set from that year.  It is a concept I have borrowed from far too many others to name, but I appreciate them all.
Bill Bennett comes from a hockey family.  His father Harvey played in the NHL, as did his brothers Harvey Jr. and Curt.  Another brother John played in the WHA.
Bill debuted with the Boston Bruins during the 1978-79 season.  He played the next season with the Hartford Whalers.  His NHL career was over, but he played two more seasons in the minor leagues.
Bill received no hockey cards for his efforts during those two seasons in the NHL.  Back then, less than half of the players received cards.  With 31 games and 4 goals total, it is understandable that Bill did not merit a hockey card for those years.  That doesn't stop me from creating virtual cards for him.
The first card fits well with that set.  The second card's all white background doesn't work too well, but that was the only picture I could find and it does the trick.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #293: Wayne Newton & Rob Reiner

Celebrity Jersey Cards are virtual cards I have created.  They combine my love of sports trading cards with my semi-professional interest in celebrities.  I am celebrating the Cubs winning the National League Central.

Carson Wayne Newton was born in Norfolk, Virginia.  Wayne Newton became a star in Las Vegas Nevada.  He brought some of that Las Vegas flair with him to Wrigley Field to throw out the first pitch and earn a Celebrity Jersey Card.  This has to be one of the most colorful, oddest Celebrity Jersey Cards I have created.  It seems fitting for Newton.
Actor, writer, director, producer Rob Reiner was born in New York.  His acting career has taken a backseat to his brilliant career behind the camera.  Coincidentally, we is a Celebrity Jersey Card teammate of Wayne Newton.  Reiner is more of a baseball fan though, but I don't think his loyalty is usually with the Cubs.  At least for this day it was.
