Squared Circle Expo Update

The Squared Circle Expo debuts in Indianapolis May 29-30. My coverage, including updates, continues at Squared Circle Expo Is Three Months Away on Patch.com.
The first wave of wrestler announcements consisted of legends Kane (Glen Jacobs), Rey Mysterio, Christian, Vickie Guerrero, Al Snow, Demolition, Billy Gunn, Darby Allen and the Highlanders. Since then, the list has expanded to include Ted DiBiase, Gangrel, Sammy Guevara, Kevin Thorn, Shark Boy and Brian Knobbs. That's 15 wrestling superstars and with three months still to go, there are sure to be more great wrestling heroes added.
I have met Billy Gunn several times. Billy is in fantastic shape and looks like he could still go in the ring. Billy was a multi-time tag champ. In 2019, he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame as part of D-Generation X.
Now he is spending most of his time training the youth at All Elite Wrestling. I am sure he is also guiding the career of his son Austin.
At the Squared Circle Expo, you will have a chance to talk to Billy about his legendary career and anything else. Could he even step in the SCE Ring? You can find out live as it all happens.
Check SquaredCircleX.com for all of the info on this great event. Also follow Squared Circle Expo on Facebook for more frequent updates.

Andrea Bell at C2E2 2017

C2E2 (Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo) returns today through March 2. I'll be there as usual, but for now, I am recalling some fun moments from previous years at C2E2.
Andrea Bell is an illustrator and comic artist based in Chicago. Andrea is known for creating strong relatable characters and and using calming colors. She is a full-time freelance artist. She has created comics, zines, and other goods including pins, patches, and buttons.
Andrea's art is very personal, reflecting her experiences, moods and feelings. Her book Still Waiting was created during a time of loss that deals with the healing process.

I have yet to interview Andrea, but it is a goal. I am intrigued by her work and mind.

Gene Okerlund and Nick Hausman at C2E2 2017

C2E2 (Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo) returns tomorrow through March 2. I'll be there as usual, but for now, I am recalling some fun moments from previous years at C2E2.
A few tears ago, I got to spend some time with wrestling announcer "Mean" Gene Okerlund at the Headlocked booth C2E2/. On the first day, I had Scott Steiner with me and Gene poked a bit at Scott for his colorful shirt. Gene kept up that humor all weekend, even though Scott wasn't with me the next two days. It didn't matter. Gene was having fun and I had a big laugh every time.
Chicagoan Nick Hausman joined the fun on and off, too. Nick has been involved in the entertainment and wrestling business for a long time.
Headlocked is a wrestling comic produced by the very talented Michael Kingston. With the original goal of creating a "cool wrestling comic," Michael created Headlocked. He has succeeded. It was embraced by the wrestling community, wrestling fans and comic lovers of all sorts. Through hard work (and lots of comic con appearances), Michael has made Headlocked a big success.
A couple years ago I interviewed Michael about Headlocked. That interview can be found at On the Beat With Michael Kingston.
Michael is still working hard producing and promoting Headlocked.  If Michael is aat a comic con, you can bet there will be several wrestlers joining him.
Unfortunately, Gene passed away last year. He was a legend and is sorely missed.
Go to C2E2.com for more info and follow C2E2 on Facebook for more frequent updates. Also, check out HeadlockedComic.com for some more entertainment.

Jack Swagger at C2E2 2017

Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo (C2E2) returns February 28-March 1. I'll be back "On the Beat" there, but for now, I am recalling some of the fun from previous years.
Jake Hager rose to fame as Jack Swagger in the WWE. During his time there, he won three different singles titles. After leaving the WWE, he dabbled in MMA and wrestling on the independent scene. Recently, he joined All Elite Wrestling, where he is part of "The Inner Circle" of Chris Jericho.
I met Hager at C2E2, thanks to my #SuperFriend David Herro of Great Lakes Championship Wrestling. David can often be found accompanying wrestlers at their appearances and getting Hager to C2E2 was a big deal. Hager hasn't done many appearances.
Hager is another wrestler who never found a great spot in the WWE, but I blame the creative team for not giving him the right role. When paired with Zeb Colter (Dutch Mantell), Hager actually was very over. His "We the People" gimmick echoed all over arenas. Hopefully, he will fair better in AEW.
Go to C2E2.com for more info. Also follow C2E2 on Facebook for more frequent updates.

Kurt Dinse at C2E2 2017

I am looking forward to being back "On the Beat" at the Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo returning to McCormick Place February 28 through March 1. For now though, I am recalling some of the fun times over the previous years there.
I have known Kurt Dinse for many years. He describes himself as an artist and illustrator and also "slightly impaired." I might argue the "slightly" part. He is very impaired, but in a great way.
Kurt's twisted takes on pop culture caught my eye years ago and I continually marvel at his creativity. He also does completely original art, which is excellent, but i truly love his versions of things like sports logos, Scooby and more.
In addition to his artistic creativity, Kurt is a fun guy. I always look forward to catching up with Kurt at conventions. Hopefully, I will see him at C2E2 again this year.
Go to C2E2.com for more info and follow C2E2 on Facebook for more frequent updates. Also go to PungentBasementArt.com for more info on Kurt.

Friend Encounters: Lisa Marie Varon and Scott Blair at C2E2 2012

This is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

C2E2 (Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo) takes over McCormick Place this Friday through Sunday. This is a special Friend Encounter that took place at a previous C2E2.
Scott Blair is a freelance illustrator based in Florida. He originally worked with paints, but switched to digital painting in 2005. He takes his original drawings, scans them into Photoshop and paints them digitally using a Wacom pad.
Several years back, Scott did illustrations of several women of wrestling. One of his wrestling models was our mutual friend Lisa Marie Varon. At C2E2 2012, Scott presented Lisa with his custom Wonder Woman sketch with Tara (Lisa). I actually interviewed Scott at C2E2 2012 and that can be found at On the Beat With Scott Blair.
Scott is extremely talented. He has created sketch covers, sketch cards and more. He even does commissions when he isn't too busy on other projects.
Lisa Marie had a great career in the ring, winning seven Woman's championships in the WWE and TNA. She is mostly retired now, but still makes appearances at comic cons. Lisa formerly owned The Squared Circle restaurant in Chicago. It was one of the most fun spots ever. I still miss it, but at least I get to see Lisa at conventions on occasion.
For more info on Scott and his creations, go to ScottBlairArt.com. Also, follow Lisa at @RealLisaMarie on twitter.
You can go to C2E2.com for more info, including the guest list and schedule.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #468 John Lewis & Willie O'Ree

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a regular series in which I create virtual; trading cards for celebrities wearing jerseys. In honor of Black History Month, I present two important figures in black history.

Born in Alabama, John Lewis is a politician and a civil rights leader. Lewis was one of the 13 original Freedom Riders, seven whites and six blacks who were determined to ride from Washington, D.C., to New Orleans in an integrated fashion. Lewis paid a price for his beliefs, but he never wavered and pressed on. He has been the U.S. Representative for Georgia's 5th congressional district since 1987. He wrote a graphic novel March, about the civil rights movement. The Washington Capitals invited Lewis to drop a ceremonial puck. Lewis earned his Celebrity Jersey Card when wearing the Caps jersey, although I do not know any connection to the #65.
Canadian Willie O'Ree is referred to as the "Jackie Robinson of hockey," because he broke the color barrier in the NHL when he plkayed for the Boston Bruins. Making his pro debut in 1956, O'Ree made it to the Bruins the next season, despite being blind in his right eye. In parts of two seasons with the Bruins, O'Ree played in 45 games, but his pro career continued through the '78-79 season, when he played 53 games for the San Diego Hawks of the Pacific Hockey League. In 2018, he was inducted as a builder into the Hockey Hall of Fame. The Phoenix Coyotes honored O'Ree, inviting him to drop the ceremonial puck. This moment earned O'Ree his Celebrity Jersey Card. Neither the Coyotes (nor the Winnipeg Jets, their predecessor, were around when O'Ree made history.

Eric Jimenez at C2E2 2017

C2E2 (Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo) returns February 28- March 2. I'll be "On the Beat" there, but for now I am recalling some fun moments from previous years.
Eric Jimenez is a comic book artist based in Chicago. His art covers genres from fantasy and design to sci-fi, horror and superhero action. In addition to his work for various publishers, he self-published his creator-owned project, TEMPORAL.

Chante Stonewall and the DePaul Blue Demons

Three games remain in the regular season for the DePaul Blue Demons women's basketball team. The Demons are currently 24-3 and ranked 13th in the nation, while being 14-1 in 1st place in the Big East Conference.
Sunday, the Demons beat Xavier 97-65 to clinch at least a share of the Big East regular-season title, the Blue Demons' sixth in the last seven years. Seniors Kelly Campbell and Chante Stonewall enjoyed their last regular season home game and left the game in the 4th when Coach Doug Bruno pulled each to give the fans a chance to salute the awesome senior duo. Stonewall finished with 15 points, while Campbell netted 9.
For the season, Stonewall is averaging 17.4 points per game, with 5.8 rebounds. She also has 54 assists and 62 blocked shots this season. Stonewall and Campbell lead the team in virtually every category. Stonewall is also 18th in career scoring with 1,518 points.
The Demons have away games with Georgetown, Villanova and Marquette before the season ends. The Demons will be the favorite to win their third straight Big East Conference tourney.
The Big East Tournament runs Mrch 6-9 at Wintrust Arena. This is a weekend of awesome basketball action. As a member of the press for the last two tournaments, I have seen so much great action and so many elite players. Last year, I celebrated a bit with the team on the court right after the victory. I was fortunate enough to get pictures with a few players. It has been a great experience and I look forward to this year's event. I now love it so much, I would go as a fan if I couldn't get press credentials.
The Demons and all the teams deserve to have Wintrust filled with screaming fans. The hometown Demons especially deserve a full house.
Go to BlueDemons.com for more info, including schedules as we head into the Big East Tournament. Also, check here for more coverage.

The Chicago Knockouts

Last Saturday, I took in a night of Chicago Knockouts Roller Derby. The Punk-Rock Punishers narrowly defeated the Horrific Hunters 14-13 in a hotly contested battle. My recap is at My Night With the Chicago Knockouts on Patch.com. The Chicago Knockouts is billed as "Hard hits. Big Personalities." and they deliver as billed and more.
I have seen other roller derby leagues over the years, but it has been a couple years since I last attended a bout. My schedule finally allowed me to catch the Chicago Knockouts in action and I was anxious to see what they had to offer.
When I knew I could make last Saturday night, I reached out to the Knockouts, via their Facebook page. Owner-skater The Crimson Vixen patiently and eagerly answered my questions.
The Fleetwood Rink in Summit provided an intimate setting, where fans sat (or stood) very near the track. Colored lights and lively music created a fun ambiance.
We talked to a few fans to learn about the Knockouts. The biggest difference form other derby I have seen is the scoring. This score would be a lot lower than in other leagues. The reason lies in points earned by the "jammer" as she circles the track. While the Knockouts bouts have much lower scores, the intensity is amazing. In fact, the lower scores create a tense situation all night, as each point is really crucial.
The night of action literally came down to the last second. The crowd was hot as the skaters fought to the very end.
After the bout, the skaters took a lap around the track, slapping hands with the fans. Afterwards, they mingled and took pictures for a short period, before departing for the after-party, which was open to all.
The Punishers will now face the Retro Rumblers on March 14 for the Season II title. It promises to be another exciting evening.
According to Crimson Vixen, Season III should start later this year, although plans are not finalized. Vixen and I do have some plans for interviews and other fun stuff along the way. I'll be updating things as announcements are made. Stay tuned.
Thank you to the Chicago Knockouts and especially the Crimson Vixen for the hospitality and for being very patient with my questions. We will definitely return for more action and we encourage all to check out the Chicago Knockouts.
Go to ChicagoKnockouts.com for more info. Also follow the Chicago Knockouts on Facebook for more frequent updates and other fun stuff.

Happy Birthday Sam

Today is my niece Sam's birthday. I am sure she is celebrating with hubby Kyle and pooches Tris, Tux and Tim, but I send birthday wishes across country via this site.
Sam is such a cool young adult. She's funny, smart, goofy, caring and all of the qualities that make a great person. I am so proud of the young woman she is.
I also envy her courage and lively spirit. Her and Kyle moved across the country twice. They currently live out west. They found an area they loved and they moved out with their precious pooches. They are living their lives and I think it's awesome.
I have had a lot of fun with Sam over the years. I am sure great times are ahead, too. A thousand miles or so won't put an end to the fun. I am sure at some point, I'll make a trip out there to visit.
Today, Sam will be celebrating with Kyle and the Triple T pups, but I send birthday greetings across the country. Happy birthday, Sam. I love you and hope it's a fantastic one!

The Chicago Auto Show 2020

The Chicago Auto Show ended yesterday and I had a blast. I wrote a bit more about the CAS at Chicago Auto Show 2020 online for Global Traveler.
As I have previously written, I am not a car guy. That never stops me from soaking in the atmosphere and having a great time at the Chicago Auto Show. This year was awesome as always.
The CAS always starts with Media Day, which is my favorite day. While there is a big media contingent, it is obviously a much smaller crowd than when the show open to the public. It's a chance to see cars up close, test them for comfort and get pictures without the usual hordes of people.
When the CAS opens to the public a couple days later, the crowds pour in. Despite the mass of humanity, it is still fun, because of the vibe. It's fun to see which vehicles attract the largest, most enthusiastic crowds. There are always a few lesser known vehicles that surprise me with their popularity.
Regular readers know that I have a particular interest in celebrities. This year, there were a few less stars at the show, but I did get the chance to meet race car driver Bryan Herta and reconnect with ABC Chicago newscaster Roz Varon. My celeb encounters might have been down, but they were quality celebs!
For more info on the CAS, check out ChicagoAutoShow.com. Thank you to the fine folks at the CAS for their hospitality.

Friendly Encounters: Angel Bunner and Don Martukovich

Friend Encounters is a weekly series featuring my friends who have met celebrities.
In the middle of a long Chicago winter, my thoughts turn to softball. When I think softball, Don Martukovich is one of the many names coming to mind.
Residing in Ohio, I first came across Don because of my connection to the National Pro Fastpitch Chicago Bandits. Don is somewhat of a Facebook legend because of his photography. While the majority of his pictures were of the NPF Akron Racers, he also posted plenty of pictures of other NPF and collegiate teams.
Unfortunately, the Racers folded a few years back, but Ohio got another team when the Cleveland Comets joined the NPF. The Comets play in several Ohio cities, making it tougher for Don to see as many games, but he still is a regular presence at their games.
Don is a great guy. He is always generous with his pictures, giving them to the players and allowing me to use some fr my various stories. He also has helped identify players for me.
O course, Don has many pictures with softball players over the years. I chose this picture with pitcher Angel Bunner because she has a connection to both of us.
Angel was a star pitcher at Auburn, one of Don's favorite teams, prior to joining the NPF. She eventually joined the Chicago Bandits midway through the 2016 season. She was the winning pitcher, pitching in the first six innings of game 3 of the championship series versus the USSSA Pride. She will always be loved in Bandit Nation because of that.
The 2020 NPF season will see a lot of changes in the schedule format. No matter the teams and schedules, Don will remain a passionate fan, as will I. I even hope to trek out to Ohio for some games.
Check out ChicagoBandits.com, ProFastpitch.com and ClevelandComets.us for more info on the NPF. If you come out to a game, look out for Don in Ohio and me in Rosemont.

Happy Birthday Louie

Today is the birthday of my bud and business partner Louie Atsaves. We celebrated at Global Traveler's party in December, but today I feature the birthday boy here.
I first met Louie in September of 1987, when I joined Lerner Newspapers. I actually was sitting at his desk (although I didn't know that and was told to sit there). We've come a long way since then.
We worked together for 17 years at Lerner. We were dismissed on the same day as part of the Evil Empire (the Sun Times) taking over Lerner. We have run two Marathons, attended a Chicago Bears' training camp, played hundreds of poker games and made a few trips to Las Vegas, among other joint activities. I also brought Louie into GT with me. I have seen Louie get married, raise three boys and have a beautiful family.
Through it all, he is still the same guy. He is the best friend I could ever hope to have. He has had my back from the first day. He's a standup guy with a deceptively wicked sense of humor.
I greatly appreciate Louie and his family. I have had so many memories with various combinations of his family over the years. It's always great fun and they always make me feel like part of the family.
As Louie celebrates 53 with his family, I toast Louie here. Happy birthday, buddy!

Celebrity Jersey Cards #467 Becky Lynch & Dustin Rhodes (Goldust)

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a regular series in which I create virtual; trading cards for celebrities wearing jerseys. Today, we turn our attention to wrestlers on the hardwood.

Born in Limerick, Ireland, Rebecca Quin is better known as Becky Lynch, a current and 4 time WWE champ. "The Man" has had quite a run in the WWE, since she debuted in 2014, although she had been wrestling elsewhere since 2002. Lynch has done some acting and also worked for a couple years as a flight attendant. Currently engaged to WWE superstar Seth Rollins, Lynch has joined him in his fandom of Chicago teams. Prior to her involvement with Rollins, Lynch appeared at a Los Angeles Clippers game looking great in their jersey. I'd rather see Lynch in a Bulls jersey, but the Clippers jersey is enough to get Lynch on a Celebrity Jersey Card.
A native of Texas, Dustin Runnels is a second generation wrestler. His father Dusty Rhodes was a real legend. Dustin has enjoyed a long and successful career, including a long stint as Goldust, one of the oddest and greatest gimmicks in wrestling. Dustin is currently in All Elite Wrestling, where his younger brother Cody is a co-owner/promoter. Dustin's Celebrity Jersey Card comes from a backstage skit on WWE tv. I had to make two versions.

Rachel Garcia of Team USA

Born n Palmdale, CA, Rachel Garcia is a right-handed hitting pitcher for UCLA. During her high school senior season she was 26–2, with a 0.20 earned run average and 418 strikeouts in 175 innings. She had 20 shutouts, including 10 no-hitters and six perfect games, and was named the 2015 Gatorade National Softball Player of the Year.
Because of a high school injury, Rachel was a redshirt for her first year at UCLA. She rebounded strongly, putting up great numbers and racking up many awards and honors. Rachel led the Bruins to the 2019 Women's College World Series championship, where she was named the Women's College World Series Most Outstanding Player. She was also named a two-time USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year and two-time First-team All-American in 2018 and 2019.
In three seasons at UCLA, Rachel has hit .336 with 30 homeruns, 140 rbi's, 80 runs scored and a .567 slugging percentage. A double threat, on the mound, she was also 81-14, with a 1.44 ERA, a .84 WHIP, with 813 strike outs and 143 walks. She had 54 complete games and 21 shutouts. After the season, Rachel was named to the Team USA softball Olympic roster.
Last summer, Rachel was with Team USA for a week of exhibition games and training in Rosemont. I had the pleasure of interviewing her (and also Monica Abbott and Cat Osterman). My interview with Rachel can be found at On the Beat With Rachel Garcia.
I am extremely excited about watching Team USA in the Olympics in July. I will be following Rachel and the team and reporting here, Global Traveler and Patch.com.
Go to Team USA softball for more info. Also, follow Rachel on twitter.

Cards That Never Were: Bob Berry 1974 & '75 Topps

Cards That Never Were is a recurring series in which I create virtual trading cards for players missed in various sets. It is a concept I have borrowed from far too many to list, but I appreciate all of them for paving the way.
The Philadelphia Eagles selected Bob Berry in the 11th round of the 1964 NFL Draft. He made his NFL debut with the Minnesota Vikings in 1965, although he played sparingly in his first three seasons. He joined the Atlanta Falcons in 1968 and had 5 seasons there as their primary quarterback. He went back to the Vikings for the 1973 season and finished his career as a backup there, retiring after the 1975 season.
Berry's first card was in the Topps 1970 set. Topps continued giving him a card in their 1971-'73 sets. He reappeared in the 1976 set, which was a bit of an odd choice, but served as a "career capper" for Berry.
As usual for the times, early pictures of Berry were not found. I had to settle for filling in the missing cards from 1974 and '75. I really like the '74 card, because the picture is interesting and different.

Happy Birthday Jason

Today is Jason Fleigel's birthday. JayHawk will be celebrating with his lovely family, but I am sending birthday greetings to him.
Just when does he stop being Young Master Jason? In my mind, that will probably never happen. I have known Jason since 1995. We've gone through a lot together, including his wedding. One of my proudest moments was being one of his groomsmen.
The picture below truly warms my heart. I have never seen Jason happier and I couldn't be happier for him. Of course, I see less of Jason these days, but that's understandable. Still, I do miss seeing my friend. At least I can see the family on Facebook.
Happy birthday, JayHawk! Enjoy your day and your family.

Catching Up With the DePaul Blue Demons

The DePaul Blue Demons defeated the Seton Hall Pirates on Sunday to improve their conference record to 12-1, good for 1st place in the Big East. They are 22-3 overall and ranked #13 nationally.
Last season, I was fortunate to cover the Big East Tournament at Wontrust Arena. The Blue Demons rallied to beat Marquette in the championship game to win the Big East title for the second straight year.
Senior guard Rebekah Dahlman was a key contributor to the success of the Demons last season. Dahlman's tenure at DePaul had a rough start as she suffered a season-ending injury in her first regular season game. Dahlman came back strong for the 2018-19 season.
In high school, Dahlman was a star player in Minnesota. She was a McDonald's All-American and the 2013 Minnesota Miss Basketball. She was a two-time Gatorade Player of the Year and the first player in Minnesota history to score over 5,000 career points. Highly recruited, she chose Vanderbilt.
A blood clot caused Dahlman to miss 22 games her first season at Vanderbilt. Injuries struck again in he Junior season, limiting her to 27 games. At first, it was thought to be a very serious condition, but eventually it was discovered that a rib was pinching a nerve causing the clot. Despite the injuries, Dahlman put up solid numbers in her time at Vanderbilt.
Last season, for DePaul, she started 15 of the 34 games she played. Dahlman averaged 6.5 points per game, with a high of 21. She had 77 assists with a game high of 7. She averaged 3.3 rebounds per game, but had a game high of 13. She also had 24 steals over the season.
On the personal side, Dahlman has strong basketball roots. Her grandfather John Kundla is in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame for his work as head coach of the NBA's Minneapolis Lakers and the University of Minnesota men's basketball team.
Like me, Dahlman was a marketing major, but that's really where the similarities end. Dahlman left DePaul a 2x champ. Since leavinbg DePaul, Dahlman has been an instructor at clinics and camps run by ND42, he brother Noah''s company. DePaul Coach Doug Bruno has stated he would lov eot have Dahlman on his staff.
Despite injuries hampering her promising college career, Dahlman kept coming back and producing. She was a great team player and a valuable part of DePaul's championships. Dahlman remains positive and grateful for her college career. She has a bright future. It was a pleasure covering her and knowing her a bit during my time covering the Demons last season.
The Blue Demons look to make another run at the Big East title. The Big East Tournament will be held at Wintrust March 6-9. I'll be covering the Demons and the tourney and I hope to see full houses of fans!
Go to DePaulBlueDemons.com for info on the women's basketball team and all sports. Also follow the ladies at DePaul Women's Hoops on Facebook for regular updates.

Friend Encounters: Heather Langenkamp and Tony Feddeler

Friend Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

As I have previously written, I first met Tony Feddeler at either a comic con, a Chicago Bandits game or a wrestling show. That narrows it right down. In any case, I have known Tony for several years and we have enjoyed all three types of events many times.
At one such comic con, Tony met Heather Langenkamp, perhaps best known for her role as Nancy in the A Nightmare On Elm Street movie franchise. In addition to A Nightmare On Elm Street, Heather also was in Rumble FishThe Outsiders and tv's Just the Ten of Us, among many other projects. Ordinarily, I would be envious of Tony meeting her, but I have met Heather several times. On second thought, I am envious, because I always love seeing Heather.
Heather has had her share of hardships unfortunately. Her teenage son died a couple years ago from brain cancer. She was also the stalking victim of a fan angry over the cancellation of Just the Ten of Us. That life event was the basis for Wes Craven's New Nightmare, in which she played a fictionalized version of herself. Despite all of that, Heather remains a very positive person.
Tony and I agree that Heather is just a real cutie. She is very fan-friendly and a very popular guest at any convention.
Tony is also very popular wherever he goes. Well, that's what he tells me at least. I have seen him surrounded by plenty of attendees several times. Oh sure, they might be family and friends, but they are numerous anyway.
Seriously Tony is a great guy and I always enjoy experiencing events with him. I look forward to many conventions, Bandits games and wrestling shows with Tony in 2020.

Bryan Herta and the Chicago Auto Show 2020

The Chicago Auto Show officially started yesterday and runs through February 17. Media Day last Thursday allowed me to get a sneak preview.
I think the best compliment I can give to the CAS is that I am not a "car guy," but I love going to the show. Even if you aren't an auto enthusiast, it's hard not to enjoy looking at these shiny new vehicles. From high end to low priced, vehicles fill two huge showrooms at McCormick Place. There are about 1,000 vehicles in total on display in the 1 million square feet of the two halls.
The largest auto show in North America, the Chicago Auto Show debuted in 1901. With its 112th show being held in 2020, the CAS has been held more times than any other such show in North America.
Of course, I am always sniffing out celebrities and I found a good one on Thursday. Indy car racer Bryan Herta was part of a presentation. Among his career highlights, Herta competed in five Indy 500 races, finishing 3rd, 4th, 9th, 13th and 20th. He runs Bryan Herta Autosports, which produced two Indy 500 victories in 2011 and 2016. He is also the father of driver Colton.
Herta was very fan-friendly, patiently posing for pics and answering questions from the media. I didn't even know he would be there, but the CAS usually has some racing stars. I don't get to meet many racing celebrities.
I will be at the CAS several more days and I look forward to more celebrities and other daily events. Go to ChicagoAutoShow.com for more info, including schedules. Check here and GlobalTravelerUSA.com for my recurring coverage.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #466 Richard Christy & Sam Quek

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a regular series in which I create virtual; trading cards for celebrities wearing jerseys. Today, we feature two celebs repping the Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs.

Kansas native Richard Christy is one of the biggest Chiefs fans. The longtime member of the Howard Stern Show has spoken of his Chiefs fandom many times on the air. He even cried when meeting Pat Mahomes last year, as Mahomes promised a Super Bowl win (and delivered it this year). Christy is wearing #92, probably a Tanoh Kpassagnon, jersey and naturally chugging some alcohol. This is the perfect Celebrity Jersey Card for Christy, although he will probably have an updated version wearing a Mahomes jersey, because he's his faaaaaavorite.
Samantha Ann Quek, MBE is a former British field hockey player. She won a Gold medal as part of the British team at the 2016 Summer Olympics. I don't know of any Kansas City connection, but Quek is showing off her Gold medal while wearing a Chiefs #25 jersey, presumably Jamaal Charles. Quek is currently a columnist.

Bionce Foxx at 2019 Chicago Auto Show

The Chicago Auto Show runs February 8-17 at McCormick Place on Chicago's lake shore. I will be "On the Beat" as always, but for now I am recalling some fun times over the years at the Chicago Auto Show.
Bionce Foxx is a television and radio personality, currently on V103 on I Heart Radio. Last year, she appeared at the Chicago Auto Show at the V103 booth, which was broadcasting live from the event.
The V103 folks and Bionce herself were very accommodating. I approached a staffer and asked to talk to Bionce during a break. He immediately waved Bionce over and she immediately came over. I didn't expect that quick of a response and I told them so.
Ever humble, Bionce fluffed off my compliment and talked about the lively vibe at the V103 booth and the Chicago Auto Show. I would have been happy with just a quick picture, because I saw how busy Bionce was, but she went above and beyond and talked to me for several minutes.
We talked about the difficulties of doing live remotes, but also how electric they can be. Having immediate fan reaction and interaction adds an interesting element to the show. Bionce was up for the challenge, easily engaging with all of the fans around the V103 booth.
Go to ChicagoAutoShow.com for all of the info. Also check Chicago Auto Show on Facebook to get more frequent updates. You can follow Bionce at @BionceFoxx on twitter.

Adam Carolla at the 2019 Chicago Auto Show

The Chicago Auto Show runs February 8-17 at McCormick Place on Chicago's lake shore. I will be "On the Beat" as always, but for now I am recalling some fun times over the years at the Chicago Auto Show.
Last year, one of my highlights was meeting and interviewing Adam Carolla. That interview can be found at On the Beat with Adam Carolla. As a longtime fan of Adam, this was a big thrill. As a reporter, this was a pretty big name to add to my resume.
We talked about his love of cars (especially interesting given we were at the Chicago Auto Show), his podcasting, his first pitch and much more. Adam was really open and funny throughout, but I think he really got into the discussion of his first pitch. He definitely did not do a "Baba Booey" and he explained his process.
Adam is an immensely successful podcaster. He has also worked as a radio host, an actor, a television host, an author and more. I loved his work with Jimmy Kimmel on Loveline.
Adam loves owning and working on cars, but he also loves racing them. He is proud of winning a couple big races.
I appreciate Adam's time and consideration in talking to me. I thank the fine folks of the Chicago Auto Show in facilitating this interview and giving me access all throughout the show.
Go to ChicagoAutoShow.com for all of the info. Also check Chicago Auto Show on Facebook to get more frequent updates. Also go to AdamCarolla.com for more info on him and his podcast.

Adam Burish at 2019 Chicago Auto Show

The Chicago Auto Show runs February 8-17 at McCormick Place on Chicago's lake shore. I will be "On the Beat" as always, but for now I am recalling some fun times over the years at the Chicago Auto Show.
Like Chris Chelios from yesterday's feature, Adam Burish played college hockey at the University of Wisconsin. He made his NHL debut with the Chicago Blackhawks. He played four seasons with the Hawks, winning a Stanley Cup in the 2009-'10 season. He also played for the Dallas Stars and the San Jose Sharks. He currently is an analyst for NBC Sports Chicago.
Nine years after winning the Cup, Burish appeared at the Chicago Auto Show and drew a huge line of fans, many of whom queued up several hours before his scheduled time to ensure they would meet him.
I talked to Burish about his Cup and the residual fandom it created. He will forever hold a place in the hearts of Chicago fans. He said there is no place like Chicago. He is grateful for the affection and he returns it. He also urged everyone to believe in the Hawks and stay on the bandwagon as they rebound from a down period.
Go to ChicagoAutoShow.com for all of the info. Also check Chicago Auto Show on Facebook to get more frequent updates.

Chris Chelios at the 2019 Chicago Auto Show

The Chicago Auto Show runs February 8-17 at McCormick Place on Chicago's lake shore. I will be "On the Beat" as always, but for now I am recalling some fun times over the years at the Chicago Auto Show.
Chris Chelios was born in Chicago and briefly attended my alma mater Mount Carmel High School. Chris moved out west, but returned to the midwest to attend the University of Wisconsin. He went on to play 26 seasons in the NHL with the Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings and Atlanta Thrashers. He also played in the 2002 Olympics.
When I saw Chris would be at the Chicago Auto Show last year, I made him my top target to meet. For as big of a presence he has had in Chicago over the years, I have only met him a couple times.
Chris looked well-tanned and in great shape. He's loving life. His daughter Caley is a radio color analyst for the Tampa Bay Lightning. His son Jake is a defenseman currently playing for the Kunlun Red Star of the Kontinental Hockey League. He made his NHL debut last seaqson, logging in seven games for the Red Wings.
As a longtime fan of Chris, I was really happy to chat with him a bit. Judging by the long line after me, I'd say he still has a ton of fans in Chicago.

Friend Encounters: Ted Nugent and Evil Zebra

Friend Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities. Today, we revisit the man who calls himself "Evil Zebra."

I have featured Evil Zebra many times. I am not sure how I originally connected with EZ, but I am sure it involved one of his celebrity encounters/ He has so many, I have told him he should write a book, a notion he eschews.
Although (so far) he refuses to write a book, EZ does post a lot of his celebrity pictures on his Facebook page. Today's "Blast from the Past" is of EZ with rocker Ted Nugent on the set of The Mike Douglas Show. EZ was a frequent visitor to the set and appeared on the show as well.
I plan to keep pushing EZ for more info and stories, with the eventual goal of the book. I realize that is a long shot, but EZ has so many untold stories and unseen pictures. It would be fascinating.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #465 Nathan Morris & Holly Tucker

This is a weekly series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebrities wearing sports jerseys. In honor of the Super Bowl, we feature celebs repping both teams.

Philadelphia native Nathan Morris started singing at an early age. Morris had dreams of playing pro football, but ultimately followed a musical path. He was one of the founding members of Boyz II Men. Morris earned a Celebrity Jersey Card just recently when Boyz II Men sang the National Anthem before a San Francisco 49ers playoff game. Morris wore the #87, most famously worn by Dwight Clark.
Holly Tucker was on The Voice Season Four. In 2018, Tucker was a part of Waco tourism program. Tucker sang about things to do while in Waco. Tcuker's Celebrity Jersey Card should have been the Dallas Cowboys or the Houston Texans, but because she sang the National Anthem for the Kansas City Chiefs, she is shown repping the Chiefs. At least the Chiefs were originally from Dalls, when they were the Texans. Tucker's #19 was most famously worn by Joe Montana.

John Kassir at Days of the Dead 2018

John Kassir is one of the coolest celebrities I have met at Days of the Dead. Probably best known for his role as The Crypt Keeper on Tales From the Crypt, John was a very popular guest. He was also very patient and accommodating.
As the man of the famous voice, hundreds of people asked him to do the voice. Several asked him to  leave voice messages in the voice. Not wanting to disappoint his fans, John tirelessly brought out the voice. He even was kind enough to do a promo video for the Beat, which can be found at John Kassir Loves Johngy's Beat.
I talked to John about his legendary role. While it has brought him great fame, it must be frustrating that despite a lengthy resume, the vast majority of fans will always ask about the Crypt Keeper. John handles it well though. He appreciates the fans for whatever they like. He's happy to have such a memorable character and also to have plenty of other roles. He simply seems like a happy man.
Days of the Dead runs several shows all over the country throughout the year. The next event is February 7-9 in Atlanta, GA. For more info, check out DaysoftheDead.com.
