Dirk Manning at New York Comic Con 2021 (and 2022 and 2023)

New York Comic Con is one of the biggest comic cons in the country. I covered it last year and even still in the pandemic mess, it completely blew me away in size and excellence. I did not make it this year, but I will be back.
I have known Dirk Manning for many years. He was one of the first creators I interviewed and we became friends over the years, bonding over our interest in comics, horror, wrestling and ice cream.
Last year at NYCC, Dirk was celebrating and promoting "Butts in Seats: The Tony Schiavone Story,"
thr graphic bio novel he did with the famous wrestling announcer. I was ecstatic to buy a copy and have both men sign it. Dirk also gave me a mini-scoop that something else was already in the works. That something turned out to be a graphic bio novel with Arn Anderson.
Already a highly successful creator in the horror genre, Dirk is becoming a force in the wrestling world. I always thought wrestling would be a good fit for some artists, but I never applied that same logic to writes like Dirk. It's a perfect fit and nobody is a better person to handle this.
Dirk announced he will be at NYCC and I will catch up with him there. Maybe I'll even get another scoop. Nothing will surprise me with Dirk.
Go to DirkManning.com for more info on Dirk's latest projects. Check NewYorkComicCon.com for updates and scheduling on NYCC.

The Johngy "OR ELSE" Podcast - Ep. 47: Dirk Manning

I first met Dirk Manning about 15 years ago in Artist Alley at Motor City Comic Con. While walking down the aisles, scanning hundreds of creator booths, Dirk's interesting banner caught my eye.

Dirk's “logo” was a man wearing a top hat and scarf, which covered the lower half of his face. It was a unique looking banner that stood out in a sea of colorful and creative booth signs.

Approaching his booth, I introduced myself and asked to learn more about this mysterious man. Thus the seeds were sown for a friendship forged at a comic con.

Dirk is a writer and creator of comic series. His works include the supernatural noir Tales of Mr. Rhee and the genre-bending horror anthology Nightmare World. Not limited to fiction, Dirk also is the author of the book series Write or Wrong: A Writer’s Guide to Creating Comics, which started as an instructional column.

Over the years, through many interviews and chats, I learned Dirk is a wrestling fan. A couple years ago Dirk took his writing talent and combined it with his love of comics and wrestling in a collaboration with wrestling announcer Tony Schiavone. The result was Butts In Seats: The Tony Schiavone Story, a graphic bio released last year.

An Amazon No. 1 best-seller, Butts In Seats was a major success. It was the first original graphic novel to be advertised on cable television, thanks to Schiavone's role on All Elite Wrestling shows.

Many wrestlers also lent their support to promote Butts In Seats. Seeing the success and popularity of Butts In Seats, AEW agent and Hall of Fame wrestler Arn Anderson looked to have a similar book. The end result is Arn Anderson: My Life As An Enforcer, a book project in production. Currently in the Kickstarter phase of development, Arn's book is scheduled for release early in 2023.

My podcast partner Tommy Else and I interviewed Dirk about all of this. That podcast is at The Johngy "OR ELSE" Podcast - Ep: 47 Dirk Manning.

Dirk started with a quick recap of his career, before discussing the origins of his work with Schiavone and Anderson. Despite his love and respect for wrestling, Dirk was not going to jump into either project just because both men are wrestling legends. Dirk wanted to be certain of the focus of each book. Of course, the integrity and sincerity of all involved ensured the books would be telling the stories of the real men behind their colorful larger-than-life images.

Started in mid-November, the Arn Anderson Kickstarter program has already passed several stretch goals. There are still 11 days left as of this writing. Dirk explained the pledge levels, including one which rewards backers with several autographed bookplates.

As I said in the interview, Dirk is the perfect person to write these wrestling bio graphic novels. His respect and knowledge of wrestling give him the perfect perspective. With his writing background, he has the ability to pull out the heart of the life stories of the wrestling personalities.

With the sales success of Butts In Seats and the Arn Anderson book Kickstarter program surpassing all goals, I would guess more wrestlers will be calling Dirk. While he is tight-lipped about future projects, Dirk's future is bright. I'm confident he isn't done with wrestling, but also not done with mysteries. There's also the potential ice cream mystery, another project that has rolled around his head and one that includes another of his loves. Dirk is a noted ice cream aficionado and has turned me onto Jeni's, his favorite ice cream place which happens to have several locations near me in Chicago.

Wrestling, horror, ice cream and more, Dirk's versatility is paying dividends and book lovers of all those genres, including me, are loving his work. I bought and love Butts In Seats and I look forward to Arn Anderson: My Life As An Enforcer.

Friend Encounters: Orange Cassidy and Dirk Manning

Friend Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

Today is another example of a friend who is a celebrity meting another celebrity. The fiend is Dirk Manning, a talented creators. The celebrity is Orange Cssidy, a popular wrestler with All Elite Wrestling. I argue Dirk Manning is a celebrity, too, although he would eschew that notion. If he isn't a celeb, he is well on his way.
I have known Dirk for about 10 years. I have interviewed him many times about his career, wrestling and ice cream. I was well aware he knew a lot about wrestling, but I was pleasantly surprised when he announced he would be involved with a graphic novel bio on wrestling broadcaster Tony Schiavone.
With Dirk behind it, I knew the product would be great, but I was blown away at how cool Butts in Seats: The Tony Schiavone Story is. Dirk is very excited and proud and rightly so. The book is 148 pages of pure, colorful entertainment. It covers Tony's life in and out of the world of pro wrestling.
Through his work on the book, Dirk has become even more immersed in wrestling, especially AEW. Many wrestlers have given their support or approval of Dirk's work. Such was the case at New York Comic Con when Dirk connected with OC. As I have written before, OC is a unique wrestler. He remains in character virtually all the time. Even for paid photo ops, OC stays in character, barely acknowledging his fans. True fans get it though. It's old school at it finest.
The picture below is about as out of character as OC gets. He at least connected with Dirk. He still looks somewhat aloof, but that's just him.
I couldn't be happier for Dirk. He deserves all the success he is having. I know there will be more fun coming his way and I am betting there will be more graphic novels, too!
NYCC returns October 6-9. I will be "On the Beat" and I hope to see my friend Dirk there again. I am sure there will be a big wrestling presence, as well as many other celebrities and creators.
Go to AllEliteWrestling.com for more info on OC and his grappling mates. Check DirkManning.com for everything about Dirk. Go to NewYorkComicCon.com for scheduling and updates on NYCC.

On the Beat With Dirk Manning at C2E2 2021

My post-event coverage continues with old favorite Dirk Manning, who made major news. I interviewed Dirk Sunday and at the end of the video, you will see the major announcement. That interview can be found at On the Beat With Dirk Manning at C2E2 2021.
Still riding the wave of success from Butts in Seats: The Tony Schiavone Story, his graphic bio collaboration with the famous wrestling announcer, Dirk broke the news he would be working with the legendary Arn Anderson for is next project. For wrestling and comics fans, that is huge news.
Dirk's background and first love is horror, as witness by his many other books, but wrestling isn't far behind and might be catching up. I have had made conversations with Dirk on wrestling and I know he is knowledgeable and respectful of the business. He is the perfect person to do these books and I am happy for his success. It is well-earned and completely deserved.
I am sure I will be talking to Dirk in early 2022. We'll catch up on horror, ice cream, wrestling and more. He always has projects in the works and is always willing to share the news with me.
So throw up the four finger salute and go to DirkManning.com for more info on Dirk and his books. Also, check C2E2.com for news and updates on C2E2 2022.

Looking Forward to Dirk Manning at NYCC

I am so looking forward to being "On the Beat" at the upcoming New York Comic Con, which runs October 7-10. It is a return to comnic cons and I will be seeing some of my usual con friends, like creator Dirk Manning.
Just because I haven't been able to see my creator friends at comic cons this year doesn't mean I have lost touch with them. Today, I am sharing some news from Dirk Manning.
Dirk is the writer/creator of comic series such as Tales of Mr. Rhee and Nightmare World. I have been a big fan of Dirk's work for several years. I have interviewed him several times, including On the Beat at Wizard World.
Dirk announced via Facebook Live, he is doing a second edition of his popular Write or Wrong (A Writer's Guide to Creating Comics) book. It will be about 25-30% new content. The book release will also coincide with the publication of Write or Wrong #2. Write or Wrong is a collection of Dirk's tips and advice to aspiring young comic book writers. The news of a 2nd edition and a book #2 was greeted with thunderous applause from the hundreds of watchers.
The two Write or Wrong books are not the only projects Dirk has coming soon. He's been extremely busy with his many other creative endeavors.
Dirk has so much stuff going on, you should go to DirkManning.com to get all of the info and learn all about him. Also, follow Dirk Manning on Facebook for more frequent updates, including his recent Facebook Live announcement detailing all of his projects forthcoming. Also, go to NewYorkCComicCon.com for news and schedules.

On the Beat With Dirk Manning

I have previously interviewed and written about comic-creator Dirk Manning many times. You can find past coverage by going to Dirk Manning on Johngy's Beat.
I first met Dirk many years ago at a comic con and have seen him many times since. He is always good for an update on his latest projects, as well as talking about wrestling, ice cream and other fun. Dirk has an extensive bibliography and I am a devoted reader of his works, but I have never been as excited as I am about his latest project, Butts In Seats: The Tony Schiavone Story.
Wednesday evening, I had the pleasure of doing an interview with Dirk about Butts In Seats, as well as his other projects. We even squeezed in a little ice cream talk. I have been excited about this book from the first time I read about it in one of Dirk's social media posts. An admitted "unabashed wrestling fan," Dirk is the perfect person to write this story with Tony. Dirk understands and appreciates the wrestling business. He is also an extremely talented writer. Add Tony's collaboration and this book promises to be a winner.
Tony has had an interesting career. Falling in love with wrestling, becoming an announcer, leaving wrestling, broadcasting baseball and returning to wrestling are just part of Tony's journey. Although wrestling is a big part of this book, it's not the whole story. Butts In Seats can be enjoyed be anyone, wrestling fan or not. I have ordered the book and I encourage everyone to check out the Kickstarter campaign to learn all about it, which will lead you to buying the book. Once I get it, I will be reviewing it here, although I don't think Dirk or Tony have any worries. I am confident this book is going to be awesome.
I hope you enjoy the interview as much as I enjoyed talking to Dirk. I appreciate Dirk for all of the entertainment he has provided me in written form and I appreciate his friendship even more. I thank Dirk for taking time from his current insanely busy schedule to give me this fun interview.
Go to the Butts In Seats: The Tony Schiavone Story Kickstarter page for more info. Also, check out Dirk's other work at DirkManning.com and look for him on social media. Also, go to AllEliteWrestling.com for more on Tony and the whole organization.

Dirk Manning at C2E2 2017

C2E2 is coming back to Chicago March 22-24 and I cannot wait. As I type this looking forward to the event, I am sharing some of my favorite moments over the years at C2E2.
Dirk Manning is one of my all-time favorites on the comic con scene. I am also proud to call him a friend.
Dirk is the writer/creator of the "Tales of Mr. Rhee" comic series. Mr. Rhee has been described as tortured and conflicted. He also seems to see clearly in a world of trouble. He works to stop the "monsters and nasties" of the world, while navigating through life.
Among his other works is "Write Or Wrong," his inspirational guidance column. Aimed at comic book writers, it contains advice, tips, networking and more.
I also have to mention his interest in wrestling. Within my several interviews with Dirk, I usually squeeze in a little wrestling talk. Dirk is a knowledgeable fan with good insight and opinions.
Dirk has been announced as a creator guest for this year's C2E2. I'll definitely be spending time at his booth and encourage everyone to check out his work. You might also bring an ice cream cone for him.
Check out DirkManning.com for all of the info on Dirk. Also, follow Dirk on Facebook and Dirk on twitter. Go to C2E2.com for more info on this year's event.

Friendly Encounters: Barry Bostwick and Dirk Manning

Friendly Encounters is a weekly series featuring my friends who have met celebrities.

I have met actor Barry Bostwick a few times. Our interview can be found at On the Beat With Barry Bostwick. That interview was one of the mist fun ones I have had. Bostwick was awesome and he continued to be great every other time I met him.
I met writer Dirk Manning many years ago. My interviews with him can be found at On the Beat With Dirk Manning.
At Wizard World Columbus 2017, these two met up and that photo landed here. I love this pic, because Dirk is a pop culture fan and doesn't hide it. I love that Bostwick took the pic with Dirk, but he didn't do Dirk's trademark pose. Hmm. Maybe as an actor, Bostwick did not want to steal Bostwick's gimmick?
In either case, they are clearly having fun. This is the stuff I love seeing at Wizard World. Two of my favorites appeared together. Two notable creators from totally different fields joined together for a picture. I love seeing the various crossovers at Wizard World.
There are still a few Wizard World events left in the year. Check WizardWorld.com for the schedule and other information. Also go to DirkManning.com to learn more about this talented guy.

Friendly Encounters: AJ Styles and Dirk Manning

Friendly Encounters is a weekly series featuring my friends who have met celebrities.

Today's Friendly Encounters features two of my favorites. The Man of Mr. Rhee meets the Phenomenal One.
Dirk Manning is the Man of Mr. Rhee and so much more. Mr. Rhee and is just one of Manning's creations. Originally Tales of Mr. Rhee, the book spawned sequels, too. These graphic novels are beautifully illustrated and fantastically written. They are edgy, fascinating and mysterious, of course.
Continuing through Manning's library of books, you'll find Write or Wrong: A Writer's Guide to Creating Comics, Nightmare World and other interesting books. His bibliography is extensive.
AJ Styles brings an impressive resume, too. Long thought of as the face of Impact Wrestling, Styles finally joined the WWE and has continued his penchant for capturing titles. Definitely one of the best and most entertaining wrestlers of his era, Styles is popular worldwide.
Through my many interviews and casual talks with Manning, I learned he is a bit of a wrestling fan. It was great to see him get a picture with Styles. My only criticism is that Styles should have used his title belt to mimic Manning's trademark face covering technique. Then again, when you are meeting stars, you really don't want their faces covered.
This is the kind of stuff you will see at Wizard World. Check WizardWorld.com for info and their show schedule. Also, be sure to check DirkManning.com to learn more about my talented friend!

Friendly Encounters: Dirk Manning and K Lynn Smith

Friendly Encounters is a weekly series featuring my friends who have met celebrities.

I love the picture below.  My writer-creator friend Dirk Manning has fun with author K Lynn Smith, while still maintaining his usual partially hidden face pose.
They are two incredibly talented people.  More importantly, they are two very nice, friendly and fun people.
I have known Dirk for several years, having met and interviewed him at a comic con, of course.  He is probably best known as the writer and creator of Tales of Mr. Rhee, a comic series, but he has done other work, too, including Right or Wrong: A Writer's Guide to Creating Comics.  He has also done short films and written stories for other comics.  When he has spare time, he is known to watch and comment of pro wrestling.  I've even gotten him to make predictions and he is pretty accurate, but always entertaining.
I just met K Lynn last year.  She is an artist, cartoonist, designer and more.  She has worked on several projects, including Plume, a western webcomic.
It's always interesting seeing two creators interacting.  I forget that they are people, too.  Life on the road can be lonely and they are all competing for the same consumer dollars at the conventions.  Still, they are mostly very friendly with each other.  It's like a brotherhood.
You can check out Dirk at DirkManning.com and follow Dirk on Facebook.  Likewise, you can check out K Lynn at PlumeComic.com and follow K Lynn on twitter.

Dirk Manning at Motor City Comic Con 2016

Dirk Manning is a writer-creator.  His many works include the comic series Tales of Mr. Rhee and Nightmare World, the ongoing Write or Wrong: A Writer's Guide to Creating Comics, stories for other comics such as Love Stories to Die For and The Legend of Oz: The Wicked West and much more.  He also has written short films for Blackbox TV, the horror film series on YouTube.  He's one busy guy.
Somehow he manages to squeeze in many comic cons every year.  That's where I first met Dirk.
Aside from his talent, Dirk is a great guest at comic cons.  He is very personable and will eagerly discuss virtually any topic.
Don't wait until you have a chance, make time and go watch The Hunger on Blackbox TV on YouTube.  It is about 8 minutes of delightful terror.  It's the best 8 minutes of entertainment I have had in a while.
Dirk's other works are just as entertaining.  The guy just needs to be a little busier!
He doesn't always wear a top hat and scarf, but he usually can only be seen from the eyes up.  You can learn more about Dirk, including his appearance schedule at DirkManning.com and by following Dirk Manning on Facebook and twitter.

On the Beat With Dirk Manning at C2E2 2015

When covering a comic con, I always see if any of my favorites are there.  I don't go to these people because they are easy to get.  I go to these people because I truly like their work and find them interesting.  There are hundreds of creators in Artist Alley, but I will always see out my favorites first.
Dirk Manning is one of my favorites.  Aside from being incredibly talented and personable, he also likes wrestling.  This can take our interviews into many directions.
Last year, I interviewed Manning at C2E2 2014 and he made three WWE predictions.  That interview can be found at On the Beat with Dirk Manning at C2E2 2014.
This year, we started the interview with a bit of wrestling.  Manning predicted (or maybe hoped) for a specific opponent for Sting.  We'll see if that prediction comes true.
Onto more important stuff, Manning was promoting his "Tales of Mr. Rhee" series.  It is filled with fantastic illustrations and riveting stories.  It's the kind of book you hate to see come to an end.  Thankfully, it is a series and hopefully, there will be many more to come.Manning also promoted "Then It Was Dark," described on its Kickstarter page as "a collection of paranormal experiences, true ghost stories, friend-of-friend tales and brushes with the unknown."  Manning had some interesting things to say about the book and his experiences.
Of course, he also was promoting "Write or Wrong."  This is a collection of his "Write or Wrong" columns, where he gives advice to comic writers and creators in general.
Manning has a lot on his plate and some cool stuff coming up.  I will continue to follow his career and update it right here.  You can also go to DirkManning.com for more info and updates.

Friendly Encounters: Dirk Manning and CM Punk

Friendly Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

I met author Dirk Manning at a convention years ago.  I interviewed him then and have tried to interview him whenever I see him.  He's an interesting guy and a talented writer.
He is also a wrestling fan, which gives us a bit more common ground.  During our last interview, I asked Manning to make three predictions.  So far, two of his predictions are holding up and the third will be determined soon.  You can hear his predictions, along with some info on his projects at On the Beat with Dirk Manning at Wizard World 2014.
Dirk predicted CM Punk would not return to wrestling (or not for a very long time at least).  While we might not see him in a ring, Dirk did see Punk at a comic con a few years ago.  This is a rare photo indeed.  Fans of Dirk will spot it right away.  For those who aren't that familiar with Dirk, if you check out the Dirk Manning FB page and look at his profile picture, you will understand.
Manning is the mad genius behind "Tales of Mr. Rhee."  You can learn all about this great project at the Tales of Mr. Rhee Kickstarter page.  You can get some cool stuff with various donations, too.  I encourage all to check out Manning and help the cause.

On the Beat with Dirk Manning at the 2014 C2E2

Dirk Manning does a pretty good job of hiding his face.  He can hide all he wants, but JohngysBeat.com always finds him at comic cons.  He's a definite favorite of the Beat.  At the 2014 C2E2, we once again caught up with Manning and got a scoop on his latest projects.
You can watch the interview below and then head over to DirkManning.com to learn more about Manning and his latest projects.  His work with Big Dog Ink and his book The Tales of Mr. Rhee are his two big projects right now.  Manning considers himself a "short-story" guy, but as evidenced by the above two I mentioned, his talent isn't limited to just that.
A while back, we also learned that Manning likes pro wrestling.  After we talked a bit about his latest work, we had to squeeze in a few wrestling questions.  Manning handled them all well, giving interesting and thoughtful answers.  The man knows his stuff.
We keep going back to Manning, because we like him and his work.  If you can't make it to the various comic cons or other appearances of his, hopefully we are opening some eyes to his talent.  Manning's continual consideration to talk to us and give us the latest scoop, coupled with his willingness to talk about other interests make him an interesting interview subject.

Dirk Manning, Mr. Rhee and Johngy

I originally met Dirk Manning at Dan Con.  Manning is a talented author and writer.  I have had the pleasure of interviewing him a few times (check the JohngysBeat.com YouTube channel) and he is always interesting.
I strongly believe in promoting good people and their projects.
Manning is one of those good people and he has a cool project, a hardcover graphic novel titled Tales of Mr. Rhee.  Mr. Rhee is the cryptic and tortured main character and his story is told through 13 short stories.
Manning has put his project on the Kickstarter page in hope of raising $13,000.  At roughly $3,500, he is a bit over 25% of his way there.  The Kickstarter campaign ends on November 4.
You can donate whatever money amount you would like, but there are various rewards for certain levels of donation.  There are a lot of cool things available and it all goes for a great cause.
Manning has always been good to JohngysBeat.com and I would love to see this Kickstarter campaign be highly successful for him.  I hope you will at least go there and check out Tales of Mr. Rhee and the project.
I encourage everyone to go to Tales of Mr. Rhee Hardcover Graphic Novel on Kickstarter to learn more about the project.  Dirk is great and very talented.  Help with the project if you can!

On the Beat with Dirk Manning at Wizard World 2013

I have already interviewed author Dirk Manning at two previous conventions, but somehow I had not learned of his interest in wrestling until just recently.  You know what that means.  A third interview was needed for a little wrestling talk and that occurred at Wizard World 2013.
We talked to Manning about his most recent work.  Manning was at Wizard World with Big Dog Ink to promote Critter and Legend of Oz: The Wicked West.  He discusses both in the interview below.
An interesting side note is that we approached Manning for this interview and he was his usual agreeable self, but he asked us to come back, just so he could introduce Jen Broomall, who created the exclusive cover for Critter Annual.  That was cool of him to share the spotlight and to give us something new.
After discussing his literary works, we got down to some serious stuff...pro wrestling.  Manning gave us some insight into who he likes and who he might like to face in the ring.  (I am still working on making that dream match happen).  He also correctly predicted a WWE Summer Slam match outcome and the aftermath.  Maybe Manning ought to look into another career as a wrestling writer.
You can learn all about him by heading over to the Dirk Manning Facebook page and by following Dirk Manning on twitter.  I am thinking (and probably warning Manning) that he will be in my regular convention interview rotation going forward.

On the Beat with Dirk Manning at Motor City Comic Con 2013

My first interview with author-writer Dirk Manning was a few months ago and can be found at On the Beat with Dirk Manning at Dan Con.  I was really impressed and interested in his works.  When I saw he would be at the Motor City Comic Con this year, I immediately targeted him for an update interview.
We got the update interview with Manning, but I found out something later which makes me want to interview him again.  Manning is a wrestling fan!
That's right!  The man perhaps best known as the creative force behind Nightmare World, a horror comic series, is a fan of the men in the squared circle.
Now, aside from all of his great writing projects, I can talk to him about Roddy Piper and the rest of the wrestling world.  I can ask him if he ever read any of Mick Foley's fiction.  I can't wait to speak to him again.
Getting back to the interview, we discussed his favorite authors, his views on working the conventions, who he wants to see at conventions and more (except no wrestling, yet).
I plan on picking up all three volumes of Nightmare World, the collection of stories from the online horror comic series.  I have read excerpts and found them very interesting.
If you see Manning at a convention go up to him.  He is very fan-friendly.  Until then, check out DirkManning.com and follow Dirk Manning on twitter.

On the Beat with Dirk Manning at Dan Con 2013

I have covered many comic cons and should have met author-creator Dirk Manning already.  Somehow, I have missed him until last week.  I discovered I was really missing out.
Manning is perhaps best known as the writer/creator of the horror comic series Nightmare World.  Although known for horror, Manning is not limited to that one genre.  He also writes the “how-to” column Write or Wrong for Newsarama.com, which has now in book form as Write or Wrong: “A Writer’s Guide to Creating Comics.”
At Dan Con, Manning was featuring his own works as well as ShadowlineOnline.com.  He informed me that Shadowline is also not just about horror.  They have something for everyone.
Manning is a very personable guy and I hope to meet him again and talk more about his various projects.  I know I only scratched the surface on him.  Keep checking back here and hopefully you will see him again.  Until then, enjoy our "introduction" interview.
For more information on Dirk Manning, check out DirkManning.com and the Dirk Manning Facebook page and follow Dirk Manning on twitter.  You can also go to Newsarama.com for even more fun!  Also, check out Dan Con Comic Con to get updates on their next show.
