On the Beat With Gina Versace-Fiore

I have always been curious and open-minded about spirits. I have wanted to talk to someone with knowledge and experience for a long time, not to get a reading (at least yet), but to learn.

When I saw a social media post by Jenniffer Weigel that included Inked Medium Gina Versace-Fiore, I knew I found the perfect person. I contacted Gina asking for an interview. I was honest, explaining I was neutral on the subject, but genuinely wanted to learn more. Gina graciously accepted my request and quickly set a time.

I anxiously waited the several days for the interview. I found an interview she did with Pat Longo. It was a fantastic interview, giving lots of info. It also helped shape the questions I had for Gina.

This morning, Gina promptly popped on Zoom and away we went. She was incredibly outgoing and patient. I realize some of my questions were a bit elementary, but I figured if I wondered, others probably did, too. Either way, Gina answered everything. She explained her skills, contacting the spirit world, how it works and more.

Some of the highlights for me included Gina discussing the circle of spirits (family, friends etc.). In other words, could she contact anyone, even if I didn't know the person. She also explained receiving bad news, the spirits interacting and what type of messages are delivered by the spirits. I also greatly respected her answering how she dealt with a non-believer.

Aside from my gained knowledge, my biggest takeaway was her passion for what she does and for helping people. Neither before nor after the interview did she try to sell me on anything, including a reading. She did not try to push her services on me or in the interview, except at the end when I asked her to give her info for those watching. She was happy to enlighten me on all the topics we covered and I am grateful for her willingness to share her story.

Near the end, I had a little extra off-topic fun when we talked hockey, specifically her love of the New York Islanders, as I saw her framed Mike Bossy jersey in the background. From my research, I already knew she loved the team, but the jersey reminded me to ask. She didn't hesitate to mention the team won four Stanley Cups. Although a lifelong fan of the Blackhawks, I had to love the Islanders back then.

My goal in the interview was to educate myself and Gina delivered big time. I hope viewers enjoy the interview and get some of their questions answered.

I really appreciate Gina giving me her time and consideration. She has a lot of demands on her time, but she gave me a thoughtful, thought-provoking conversation. I encourage everyone to listen to Gina's interview with Pat Longo and to look for the Inked Medium on social media (Instagram, twitter and Facebook).

On the Beat With the Savannah Bananas

The Savannah Bananas have entertained baseball fans since debuting in 2016. After starting play in the Coastal Plain League (a summer collegiate league), the Bananas made a big change after last season, announcing they would only be playing “Banana Ball” starting with the 2023 season.

What exactly is “Banana Ball?” Some of the unique rules include:

  • Batters aren't allowed to leave the batters box
  • There is no bunting.
  • There are no mound visits.
  • There is a two-hour time limit on each game.
  • Foul balls caught by fans are outs.
  • Batters are allowed to “steal” first base on a wild pitch or passed ball

There are other more complicated, but just as fun, rules, such as “sprints,” formerly just walks. After a fourth ball, the defense must throw the ball to every fielder, except the pitcher, before they can attempt to make a play on the batter who advances at his own risk. There are several other innovations and I'm guessing more will come to fruition in the future.

Players are also allowed, even encouraged, to create their own bits, like behind the back catches, flips and other such actions. It's all about entertaining the fans. Attendance shows the fans are highly entertained. Sellouts are regular events wherever the Bananas play.

Make no mistake though. This is real baseball. The Bananas want to win every game. They just want to make it extra fun for everyone. The Bananas are similar to basketball's Harlem Globetrotters, without the repeated routines, but with ore focus on the actual sport.

The Bananas open their season this Friday, Feb. 17 against the Party Animals. Sort of like the Trotters play the Generals, the Bananas regularly play the Party Animals. The big difference is the Party Animals are not supporting characters in the show. They play to win. The teams also play other teams during the season, too, as they travel across the country exposing all to Banana Ball.

Today, I interviewed shortstop Ryan Cox, also known as the “trickstop” of the Bananas for his style of play. Cox played ball at a high level before joining the Bananas in 2022. Ryan explained a lot of the rules and hijinx involved.

Next I talked to rookie outfielder Vinny DeRubeis. A lifelong ballplayer like Ryan, Vinny's career was derailed with a serious eye injury that left him with vision in only his right eye. Vinny discussed his comeback, as well as his thoughts on the Bananas from a rookie's perspective.

It was fascinating learning about the Bananas. Both players gave interesting insight, yet I also feel I have just scratched the surface of fun with the Bananas.

I took away two big points from these interviews. Although Banana Ball is different (and maybe even wacky at times), the Bananas and the Party Animals play real baseball.

The other takeaway is the positivity. From my first contact with the tam through talking with Ryan and Vinny, the positive feeling is palpable and contagious.

The Bananas play in Milwaukee late in the season and I plan on being there to witness Banana Ball firsthand. Until then, I will follow the team and provide recurring coverage here on The Every Day Fan.

Check out the interviews at On the Beat With Ryan Cox and On the Beat With Vinny DeRubeis. Also, go to TheSavannahBananas.com. Also check my recurring coverage of the Bananas and other sports here, GlobalTravelerUSA.com and TheEveryDayFan.com.

On the Beat With John Cosper

As the year comes to an end, I wanted to get a year end review of Ohio Valley Wrestling from our author friend John Cosper. Yesterday, I talked to John about OVW and also got a preview of his current wrestling and fiction book projects. That interview is at On the Beat With John Cosper.

In 2022, John became our go-to person for OVW news. A wrestling historian, as well as biographer, John attended many OVW shows, watching the action and talking to the talent. John has a keen eye and never steers me wrong.

Over the years, he told me to look for such upcoming stars as Billie Starkz, Charlie Kruel, Masha Slamovich, Skye Blue and many others. One by one, as I eventually saw them in person, I saw John's assessments to be right on. While Starkz is the wrestler most ready for the big time, the others aren't far behind on that same path. I quickly asked John to be my OVW correspondent for The Every Day Fan.

In this interview, John came through again. He names several wrestlers who had great years at OVW, along with a few most improved and ones to watch in 2023.

OVW might be the most exciting wrestling promotion in the country right now. Led by former WWE superstar Al Snow, it has quickly become home to fantastic wrestling action and rising stars. John much praise to Snow, along with trainers Doug Basham and the Amazing Maria.

Not surprisingly, when I talked to Snow earlier this month at Great Lakes Championship Wrestling's Blizzard Brawl, he was ever-humble, giving credit to his trainers and the wrestlers. Despite his humility, we all know Snow has a great mind for wrestling and he is proving it with the success of OVW.

John finished by giving a preview of his current book projects, starting with another OVW connection. John interviewed and featured OVW announcer Dean Hill in “Bluegrass Brawlers,” his book from a few years back. A part of OVW from the beginning, also a retired policeman, a musician, a motorcycle enthusiast and more, Hill is a part of Louisville history and not just around the ring. John previously talked about this book and it's another I look forward to reading.

He also has a book in progress with Gregory Iron. John offered to delay the book due to the unfortunate passing of Iron's father, but Iron is eager to get back into it.

John also discussed a book project featuring June Byers. A three-time women's world champ in the 40s-60s, Byers has quite a story. Two huge stories involve matches with Mildred Burke and The Fabulous Moolah, but there is a lot more to her story and John plans on telling it. John even admits to originally having a bit of a chip on his shoulder about Byers because of the Burke incident, but states he sees things in a bit of a different light now.

In addition to wrestling books, John is compiling quite a fiction library. He revealed the premise of the third book and a hint about the fourth in the Dead Park book series.

I appreciate John's contributions over the last year and I look forward to continuing this connection next year. John's knowledge of wrestling history, his insight into OVW and his continuing stream of excellent wrestling books makes him a great contributor to our wrestling coverage.

For more info on John and his books, go to EatSleepWrestle.com and DeadParkBooks.com. Check TheEveryDayFan.com for more sports coverage.

Ally Shipman Shout Out

Ally Shipman is a senior catcher on the University of Alabama softball team. Ally is hitting .422 with four home runs and 23 RBIs in 17 games played this season.

I appreciate Ally sending this shout out. I encourage all to follow Ally and the Crimson Tide at RollTide.com. Of course, I have to end this with a big Roll Tide!

On the Beat With Johnny Davis

The 2022 Legends of Basketball Showcase comes to Chicago's United Center on Saturday, December 17, 2022. The inaugural event will feature a college basketball quadruple header.

The four games are:

Session 1:
12:00pm CT: Northern Iowa vs Towson
2:30pm CT: Tulane vs George Mason

Session 2:
7:00pm CT: Dayton vs Wyoming
9:30pm CT: NC State vs Vanderbilt

In October, Intersport, the National Basketball Retired Players Association (NBRPA), the McLendon Foundation and iNDEMAND jointly presented the inaugural charity game between Gonzaga and Tennessee at the Comerica Center in Frisco, Texas. Aside from great basketball, the event was historic on a larger level.

It was the first pay-per-view national television showing of college basketball. It served as a trial and introduction for raising funds. Based on the success of the event, the partners agreed to extend and discuss expanding the program through 2023.

Tomorrow, I will be “On the Beat” enjoying the roundball action and reporting for The Every Day Fan. This morning, I interviewed NBRPA Chairman Johnny Davis about tomorrow's event and a lot more. That interview is at On the Beat With Johnny Davis.

Also a former player, coach and executive, Davis discussed the experience of winning an NBA championship with the Portland Trailblazers in his rookie season. He also gave his thoughts on the current state fo the NBA, as well as comparing greats of different eras.

We finished the interview focusing on the Legends of Basketball Showcase. Davis admitted he will be rooting for his alma mater Dayton in its game, but he is simply excited for four great games, as am I. Davis talked about the selection of Chicago as the first host and the possibility of future events. Of course, I stated I hoped Chicago would be a permanent home.

This is going to be nirvana for basketball junkies. Four games on one day in one location makes for a fantastic day. Without a real rooting interest, I can just sit back and enjoy the elite play I see on the court. It's going to be a blast watching eight plus hours of ball in the house Jordan built.

The United Center offers plenty of tasty food options. There are also plenty of great restaurants around the stadium for pre- or post-event dining, but I plan on filling up at the UC.

This is going to be an amazing day and the real start of something big. On a wintery Chicago Saturday, there is no place else I'd rather be.

Miranda Gordy Shout Out

I met wrestler Miranda Gordy at the Squared Circle Expo earlier this year. A second-generation wrestler (the daughter of Freebird Terry "Bam Bam" Gordy), Miranda made her debut in 2019.

Miranda was awesome in person at SCX. My buddy Tony Feddeler and I talked to her about her legendary dad and her developing career.

Recently, Miranda was kind enough to send a shout out video to me. I greatly appreciate this and I encourage everyone to follow Miranda on social media (links are shown in the video).

On the Beat With Mike Boryla

Mike Boryla was a star multi-sport athlete in high school and went on to a stellar career at quarterback for Stanford University. A first-team All-Pacific-8 selection in his senior year, Boryla was selected by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 1974 NFL Draft, but soon traded to the Philadelphia Eagles.

After his second season, Boryla was named to the 1976 NFL Pro Bowl. Boryla entered the game in the fourth quarter, threw two touchdown passes and led the NFC to a 23-20 comeback win.

After three seasons with the Eagles and two with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Boryla walked away from football and into a career as a lawyer. Although he left money on the table, he never looked back and has no regrets.

In the years since eaving football, Boryla has done a lot of writing. His first book was “Mark of the Beast.” He also wrote “The Disappearing Quarterback,” his one man play that he is turning into a book.

In our recent interview, Boryla discussed the origins of his writing career. Boryla talked about his faith guiding his life and an interesting person who inspired his decision, too.

The son of a former NBA player and coach, Boryla explained his father's effect on his life and decisions. He talked about getting to a peaceful place with his choices concerning his father.

Currently working on releasing “The Case of the Disappearing Quarterback” early next year, Boryla intends it to be unlike the average autobiography. Although he tells his life story, he promises the reader won't know what's coming next. He wants it to be a positive book and an educational one for younger readers, although from what I have seen and heard, I think people of all ages will learn lessons of life from it.

Through communication before and after the interview, I found Boryla to be a fascinating person. Seemingly on top of the world as a college star, high NFL draft pick and Pro Bowl QB, Boryla had a lot more on his mind and more important things to do and accomplish.

As the interview ended, Boryla promised to give an update interview after the release of “The Case of the Disappearing Quarterback.” I already have more questions to ask and I am certain I will add even more after reading his book.

I thank Boryla for his time and for fun football memories. I look forward to our next interview and encourage everyone to check back here for that. The interview is at On the Beat With Mike Boryla.

On the Beat With Peter Golenbock

Back in 1979, I saw “The Bronx Zoo” in the window of my local book store. It promised “An Astonishing Inside Story of the 1978 World Champion New York Yankees.” I had to buy the book.

In those days, I gleaned every bit of info I could get from baseball cards and magazines. “The Bronx Zoo” contained 256 pages about the best and most interesting team in baseball. More of a baseball fan than a pure Yankees fan, I still devoured that book multiple times.

“The Bronx Zoo” was the first such sports book I ever read. It would be followed by hundreds of others, many from Golenbock.

I started collecting Golenbock's older books, while awaiting his next book. Soon, my book shelf was filled with “Guidry,” “Number 1,” “Bats,” “Balls” and more from Golenbock. He became my go-to sports author and not just for baseball. “Thunder and Lightning: A No B.S. Hockey Memoir” is a fantastic book about NHL Hall of Famer Phil Esposito.

The great thing about Golenbock's books is they told the real stories. They weren't superficial cookie-cutter books about athletes. They revealed the true gritty stories, good and bad. The fact these books still hold up today is testament to how good they are.

Earlier this year, Golenbock released “Whispers of the Gods: Tales From Baseball's Golden Age, Told By the Men Who Played It.” Golenbock pulled tales from the hundreds of interviews he has done through the years. Among the players appearing in the book are Ted Williams, Roy Campanella, Jim Bouton, Roger Maris, Ron Santo and more than a dozen others.

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of interviewing Golenbock about his career and his latest book. Golenbock discussed starting his writing career (after realizing he would not be the next starting center fielder for his beloved Yankees), the internet's affect on books, writing about a subject he loves and his books, including “Whispers of the Gods,” of course. That interview is at On the Beat With Peter Golenbock.

After conducting hundreds of interviews for his dozens of books, Golenbock has countless hours of interesting baseball bits. In “Whispers of the Gods,” Golenbock shares interesting bits that did not appear in his other books.

I finished by asking Golenbock about his current and future projects. I was happy to hear there will be another “Whispers of the Gods” book. With all of his material, this could become a big series of books. Golenbock also talked about two other book projects, one of which is a serious nonsports book.

I really enjoyed this interview. Over his decades of writing, Golenbock has given me and thousands of other baseball fans so much information and entertainment. As I mentioned in the interview, I have never been a Yankees fan (at times even being a hater), but Golenbock's books are about baseball and that supersedes all team allegiances.

The Johngy "OR ELSE" Podcast - Ep. 48: Roxi Heart

The latest episode of The Johngy "OR ELSE" Podcast - Ep. 48: Roxi Heart features a very strong woman discussing her battles with eating disorders. Tommy Else and I interviewed Roxi, but we were really talking to Elizabeth, the real woman inside Roxi.

Elizabeth has fought various eating disorders for a long time, but you would never know it. I have known her for several years and had no idea.

I met Elizabeth through her husband Scott, although I knew them as Joey Roth and Roxi Heart, two polarizing figures on the Chicago area wrestling scene. Despite being with them many times, I never knew Roxi had any such issues.

To me, Roxi had it all together. She was a beautiful, intelligent, funny woman, confident enough to be a force as a manager and part of The World Famous Fabulous Idols.

When Roxi posted on social media about her eating disorders, she stated she did so to help others. With that in mind, I asked her if she would like to be on the podcast to discuss her story and shed some light on the topic. She bravely accepted.

It can't be easy putting yourself out there. You can see how raw and emotional it is in the video. Elizabeth is stronger than she'll ever know.

On a larger scale, this isn't just about eating disorders. The lesson here is to seek help if you think you needs it or to gently suggest help to a friend who you think needs it. Just like you go to a doctor for a broken bone, here is no shame in seeking help for eating issues, depression or any other battle you might have. Help is help. The main goal is total health of mind and body.

I really appreciate Elizabeth sharing her story. I hope it encourages others to seek help and share their stories. Hopefully, it is one more step in removing the stigma of seeking help for anything.

On the Beat With David Vox Mullen and Michele Traina

Michele Traina is bringing her Divorce Diaries to Westside Improv on New Year's Eve. This hilarious show is a great way to ring in the new year with loads of laughs.
Divorce Diaries is a light-hearted look at life after a divorce through the eyes of Michele. The Italian New Jersey native took her divorce and subsequent dating life and turned it into Divorce Diaries, her one-woman show. It's “healing through humor,” a clever slogan for the production, but more importantly, the way she lives her life.
Divorce Diaries is pure entertainment. This is Michele exposing her life and her reactions. Michele's act is refreshingly honest. Her goal isn't to hate on anyone, but rather to explore her emotions, healing herself and others in the process. She also isn't shy about poking at herself a bit, too.
A few weeks ago, I attended a Chicago performance of Divorce Diaries. Already a television show in development, that night was filmed for an Amazon Prime special. Comedian and show writer Alydar Skyy introduced the night. Comedian and show producer David Vox Mullen was the emcee and opener. All were extremely funny. Also on hand was another show writer, Emily Ramirez, who I recently interviewed. I also interviewed Michele about her career and Divorce Diaries.
Yesterday, I was back "On the Beat" with Divorce Diaries, as I interviewed Michele and David, about all of this and the upcoming show at Westside Improv on December 31. That interview is at On the Beat With David Vox Mullen & Michele Traina.
I wanted to interview the pair together to get opinions and answers from both sides and both sexes. I also wanted to highlight their interplay. As you can tell, this is a winning combination.
Both talked about adding a man to the Divorce Diaries team. Although focused on a woman, Divorce Diaries is entertainment for all. That was the goal of Michele (a goal she is achieving) and she added David for his abilities regardless of gender.
I have often compared Divorce Diaries to sitting in my Italian grandmother's kitchen and listening to my cousin's tell tales of their lives, much of which revolved around dating. After one of my articles ran, Michele mentioned that comparison. That was significant to me.
For Michele, it meant her humor was on target. For me, it meant I was getting it. All that is needed is a plate of cannoli, as we joke in the interview.
You can judge for yourself on New Year's Eve as Michele and the Divorce Diaries gang come to Westside Improv. Divorce Diaries is energetic, relevant, timely, but most of all, very, very funny!
For more info, go to DivorceDiariesShow.com. Check back here for my recurring coverage of Divorce Diaries developments and other entertainment bits.

On the Beat With Emily Ramirez

Recently, I attended and thoroughly enjoyed Michele Traina's Divorce Diaries. While there, I met Emily Ramirez, a write for the show. I featured an interview with Michele a little while back. Today, I present an interview with Emily at On the Beat With Emily Ramirez.

Doing research prior to the interview, I knew how busy and talented Emily was, but I learned so much more talking to her. I learned her focus and determination started at an early age with her intent to be a ballerina, a goal she accomplished, spending a decade as a professional ballerina.

Eventually, Emily ventured into stand up comedy, sketch writing and more. She currently runs her own comedy business, with plans to open a comedy club in Park Forest.

It was through their individual comedy endeavors that Emily and Michele crossed paths. It was quite fortuitous, but somehow seemed inevitable.

Emily and Michele hit it off right away. They shared many of the same traits, but enough differences to make a winning combination. Michele got Emily on board with Divorce Diaries, which brings us pretty much up to date.

Emily discussed her career path, performing stand up versus writing for others, her personality traits, meeting Michele and more. Of course, she talked about her role in Divorce Diaries, too.

Early in the interview, Emily describes Michele's personality. Near the end of the interview, I mention how Emily's description of Michele sounded a lot like what I was learning about Emily.

Both women and so positive and full of real energy. Both make it clear Divorce Diaries is a positive, humorous look at things. Obviously, and rightly so, they are proud to be accomplishing this for women in comedy, but not at the expense of men or even other women. As Emily states, “There's room at the table for all.”

Divorce Diaries returns to the Chicago area on December 31, with a production at Westside Improv in Wheaton. What a great way to end the year and ring in 2023.

Prior to that though, Emily brings Improv NSFW to Forest Park on Tuesday, December 13. Being held at the Exit Strategy Brewing Company, this promises to be a great night of comedy. It is just a taste of what Emily plans to for the future in Forest Par

My exposure to the Divorce Diaries team had been such a blast of an experience. I've met great people, learned so much and have had many laughs along the way. I encourage all to check out Improv NSFW and Divorce Diaries. I want everyone to see the fun I'm having around these folks.

For more info on Emily, check BABSComedy.com. Check back here for my future coverage of Michele, Emily and the whole gang.

The Johngy "OR ELSE" Podcast - Ep. 47: Dirk Manning

I first met Dirk Manning about 15 years ago in Artist Alley at Motor City Comic Con. While walking down the aisles, scanning hundreds of creator booths, Dirk's interesting banner caught my eye.

Dirk's “logo” was a man wearing a top hat and scarf, which covered the lower half of his face. It was a unique looking banner that stood out in a sea of colorful and creative booth signs.

Approaching his booth, I introduced myself and asked to learn more about this mysterious man. Thus the seeds were sown for a friendship forged at a comic con.

Dirk is a writer and creator of comic series. His works include the supernatural noir Tales of Mr. Rhee and the genre-bending horror anthology Nightmare World. Not limited to fiction, Dirk also is the author of the book series Write or Wrong: A Writer’s Guide to Creating Comics, which started as an instructional column.

Over the years, through many interviews and chats, I learned Dirk is a wrestling fan. A couple years ago Dirk took his writing talent and combined it with his love of comics and wrestling in a collaboration with wrestling announcer Tony Schiavone. The result was Butts In Seats: The Tony Schiavone Story, a graphic bio released last year.

An Amazon No. 1 best-seller, Butts In Seats was a major success. It was the first original graphic novel to be advertised on cable television, thanks to Schiavone's role on All Elite Wrestling shows.

Many wrestlers also lent their support to promote Butts In Seats. Seeing the success and popularity of Butts In Seats, AEW agent and Hall of Fame wrestler Arn Anderson looked to have a similar book. The end result is Arn Anderson: My Life As An Enforcer, a book project in production. Currently in the Kickstarter phase of development, Arn's book is scheduled for release early in 2023.

My podcast partner Tommy Else and I interviewed Dirk about all of this. That podcast is at The Johngy "OR ELSE" Podcast - Ep: 47 Dirk Manning.

Dirk started with a quick recap of his career, before discussing the origins of his work with Schiavone and Anderson. Despite his love and respect for wrestling, Dirk was not going to jump into either project just because both men are wrestling legends. Dirk wanted to be certain of the focus of each book. Of course, the integrity and sincerity of all involved ensured the books would be telling the stories of the real men behind their colorful larger-than-life images.

Started in mid-November, the Arn Anderson Kickstarter program has already passed several stretch goals. There are still 11 days left as of this writing. Dirk explained the pledge levels, including one which rewards backers with several autographed bookplates.

As I said in the interview, Dirk is the perfect person to write these wrestling bio graphic novels. His respect and knowledge of wrestling give him the perfect perspective. With his writing background, he has the ability to pull out the heart of the life stories of the wrestling personalities.

With the sales success of Butts In Seats and the Arn Anderson book Kickstarter program surpassing all goals, I would guess more wrestlers will be calling Dirk. While he is tight-lipped about future projects, Dirk's future is bright. I'm confident he isn't done with wrestling, but also not done with mysteries. There's also the potential ice cream mystery, another project that has rolled around his head and one that includes another of his loves. Dirk is a noted ice cream aficionado and has turned me onto Jeni's, his favorite ice cream place which happens to have several locations near me in Chicago.

Wrestling, horror, ice cream and more, Dirk's versatility is paying dividends and book lovers of all those genres, including me, are loving his work. I bought and love Butts In Seats and I look forward to Arn Anderson: My Life As An Enforcer.

For more info on Dirk and his projects, go to DirkManning.com and ArnComic.com. Check back here for updates, too.

On the Beat With Jordan Lynch

Recently, Chicago's Mt. Carmel High School won another state football title. This morning, I interviewed MC Head Coach Jordan Lynch, which is at On the Beat With Jordan Lynch.

A star with the Caravan, Lynch went on to play at Northern Illinois University. After being redshirted, then seeing limited playing time for two more seasons, Lynch became NIUs starting quarterback in 2012.

In his first year as a starter, Lynch threw for 3,138 yards. He completed 60.2% of his pass attempts, with touchdowns and only six interceptions. He also rushed for 1,815 yards with 19 TDs.

Lynch followed that success with an even more outstanding 2013 season. He completed 62.6% of his passes for 2,892 yards with 24 TDs and eight interceptions. He also rushed for 1,920 yards with 23 touchdowns. He was named a first-team All-American and finished third in the Heisman Trophy voting.

Lynch went on to play pro ball in Canada, winning the 2015 Grey Cup with the Edmonton Eskimos. He retired in early 2017 and was named running backs coach at NIU.

After one season at NIU, he returned to MCHS as head football coach. He guided the Caravan to a state title in 2019 and again this season.

When I contacted Coach Lynch about an interview, I mentioned I was an MC grad (class of '83). He immediately responded positively, texting “anything for an MC brother.” This speaks volumes for the kind of person Lynch is and the bonds built at MC.

Coach Lynch discussed the challenges of transitioning from player to coach. Being just a few years older than his players at NIU made for an interesting situation, one that Lynch relished.

MC is a high school football powerhouse. As a former player there, Lynch knew the legacy. He talked about taking over such a storied program. Ever-humble, he gave praise to his coaching staff, players, families and others. When I asked Coach Lynch about differentiating and remembering specifics about the titles he's won, he responded with the same humbleness.

Recruiting for such a successful program certainly has advantages, but there are also potential drawbacks if players are intimidated. Coach gave his insight into his recruiting mindset.

Lastly, he talked about his current schedule. Coach Lynch and the staff are busy assisting players with college commitments. His season duties didn't end with the championship. He continues being a leader to departing seniors.

I graduated many years ago, but I still follow the Caravan and attend games when I can. I proudly sported my MC sweatshirt for the interview. I am sure I am biased, but there are unqiue lifelong bonds from being part of the MC community and I am sure Coach Lynch would agree. Although he is in an extremely busy time, he cleared time from his schedule for an MC brother and I greatly appreciate it.

We made plans for me to attend some practices next season to get an insider look at the team. Look for that coverage next fall.

On the Beat With Michele Traina of Divorce Diaries

I recently saw a social media post from my entertainer friend David Vox Mullen promoting Divorce Diaries, featuring Michele Traina. Since Divorce Diaries returns to Chicago next Saturday and because I trust David's opinion, I was prompted to learn more about Michele and Divorce Diaries.

Michele is a comic, writer, actor, educator and more. She has worn and continues to wear many hats, and she wears them well. Already an experienced performer, Michele took her divorce and subsequent dating life and turned it into Divorce Diaries, her one woman show. It's “healing through humor,” a clever slogan for the production, but more importantly, the way she lives her life.

Divorce Diaries is pure entertainment. This is Michele exposing her life and her reactions. Michele's act is refreshingly honest, but light-hearted. Her goal isn't negativity, but rather to explore her emotions, healing herself and others in the process. She also isn't shy about poking at herself a bit, too.

Things I must make clear. I am single, not divorced and I am a man (obviously). Am I Michele's target audience? Yes I am and so is everyone else. Michele and Divorce Diaries is for all, whether you look at her act to heal through humor or simply just for surface level laughs.

I interviewed Michele to discuss all of this. Michele graciously gave me more in time and content than I requested. She also gave me lots of laughs, but I expected that.

She also told me about the Divorce Diaries television series with my pal David as a producer. Michele describes the show as “The Office meets American mom on amphetamines,” which is enough to capture my attention.

On Saturday, November 26 at 8 p.m., Michele brings Divorce Diaries to Lincoln Lodge at 2040 North Milwaukee on the near north side of Chicago. In addition to Michele, some special guests from the writing team for her tv series will join her for an improv part.

Watch our interview at On the Beat With Michele Traina. Go to DivorceDiariesShow.com for more info on Michele and her projects.

On the Beat With Jason Midas of 2econd Wrestling

At 2econd Wrestling's last show, Deep Cut, Jackson Larking beat Ezio Orlandi in a hard-fought match. As good as the match was, things got really interesting post-match.

Larkin got his hand raised in victory. His manager Jason Midas congratulated him. Larkin left the ring, but Midas stayed behind, approaching Orlandi. He handed Orlandi a card. In an subsequent interview for The Every Day Fan, Orlandi admitted it was a business card and Midas was pitching his managerial services.

Unfortunately, in that interview, Orlandi only admitted they were in talks. He did not reveal any more details. I figured Midas wouldn't divulge much more, but I had to take a shot in my interview with him today. That interview is on the Johngy's Beat YouTube channel at On the Beat With Jason Midas.

We started with a little talk of his background. Midas talked about his interest in wrestling, his favorites and his derailed in-ring career due to injury. The versatile, multi-talented Midas did not sit on the sidelines though. He developed into one of the hottest managers on the Chic area wrestling scene.

He discussed his managerial idol, what he does to be special, working the crowd and more. He explained his sometimes nefarious acts in a way that made me see his side of things.

Then I made my move and tried to pry information about his plans for the upcoming 2econd Wrestling show. Much like Orlandi, Midas was tight-lipped. He seemed to enjoy toying with me about the possibilities. Maybe he was also sending a message to Orlandi.

Despite what appears to be Midas recruiting Orlandi, I must also ask whether this is part of a bigger plan of his. Perhaps this is part of his mind games. Maybe Orlandi gave his guy Larking too much of a challenge. Maybe Midas wants Orlandi to think he is recruiting him.

After interviews with the two men involved, I am really left with more questions and scenarios. Fortunately, I will be at the show to see what develops.

2econd Wrestling's next show is Dynasty on December 11 in Northbrook, Illinois. It's their anniversary show and the card is stacked. Already announced are Missa Kate versus Killa Kate and Dak Draper versus MLW champ Hammerstone. There's also an 11 Stars Battle Royal, to crown the first ever Maxwell Street Heritage Champion. Notice it features 11 stars. As we know with 2econd Wrestling, there could very well be woman in that match. Also announced is the return of Colt Cabana.

I will be “On the Beat” watching the action and reporting back here. Hopefully, I will get some clarity on the Midas-Orlandi situation.

On the Beat With Mike Curkov

Mike Kurkov, news anchor for CBS 58 in Milwaukee made his professional wrestling debut at Great Lakes Championship Wrestling's Blizzard Brawl. I thought it would be a one-off, cameo appearance for Mike, but I was wrong on both accounts.

At Blizzard Brawl, Mike teamed with The Gunn Club to do battle against The Express and Kevin Thorn. Mike was no auxiliary player in this match. He was a legit competitor, who accounted very well for himself, but his story was not over.

On Saturday, December 3, Mike will again enter the ring opposite Thorn. This time, he won't have The Gunn Club on his side. Making matters more ominous, he will be facing Mordecai (a religious, zealot-like alter ego of Thorn).

Early this morning, I interviewed Mike about all of this. Much like Mike seeks interesting stories (as he explains in the interview), I sought out Mike because he is a fascinating story.

A veteran in the news media field, Mike talked about his career and what led him to the wrestling ring. His quest for an interesting story turned into his own interesting story, one which might win an Emmy for him.

Last year, when previewing the Blizzard Brawl card, I noted Mike's inclusion. I figured The Gunn Club would do the bulk of the battle, with Mike getting a hot tag and showing off a few moves, before tagging out again. I figured he might get the pin, but only after his teammates beat down the opposition. I was wrong and happily admitted it to him, the exact reaction he wanted to get, as he tells it in our interview.

Mike talked about his dedication and effort in training and it showed. He wasn't a sideshow for publicity. He took it very seriously and the results showed it.

His debut was in a six-man tag match and his subsequent matches have been various tag team efforts, too. At Blizzard Brawl, he will be going to the ring alone though, ready to face one of the more imposing wrestlers in Mordecai.

Mike discusses his mindset heading into the match, which is billed as a “Retirement” match. He is even more serious about this match.

I am torn when predicting the outcome. I can't see Mike's wrestling career ending, but I also don't think Thorn is ready to hang up his boots. Maybe this will just be the retirement of Mordecai.

Adding to the intrigue is Mike's possible Emmy win. He explains how it all tied together. I think the one more loose end is the Emmy win, which will be announced from Chicago sometime that night. That win would bring everything full circle and be a storybook moment for Mike.

No matter which outcome, it is one I don't want to miss. I will be “On the Beat” ringside for Mike's match and recapping all here the next day.

The entire card is:

Main Event

EC3, Psycho Boy Fodder, Jacob Fatu, Shera & “Certified” Luke Kurtis vs. “The Fanny Pack Kid” Kal Herro, Al Snow, Dustin Jackson, D-Lo Brown & Doug Basham

GLCW Heavyweight Title Match

Backwoods Brown with Josh Ashcraft vs. “The Last Real Man” Silas Young

Fatal 4 Way #1 Contender Match

“Mayan Mauler” Drew Hernandez vz. “Punk Rock Prince” Jordan Kross vs. “80s Baby” TW3 vs. Cash Flo

Tag Team Match

ODB & Tiffany Nieves vs. Chelsea Green and Leila Grey

Eric Redbeard vs. Moose

Juggalo Heavyweight Championship

Vampiro vs. “Shotgun” Tony Gunn

Mordecai vs. “Iron” Mike Curkov

There will also be plenty of other wrestling legends appearing, including Dustin Runnels, Billy Gunn, The Nasty Boys, Jimmy Hart, Gangrel and more. Of course, expect to see many other wrestlers and longtime wrestling fans in the crowd. This is THE big GLCW show of the year. It's one I never miss.

Blizzard Brawl 2022 is on Saturday, December 3 at 7 p.m. (doors open at 4:30 p.m.). It's at the Waukesha County Expo Center in Waukesha, Wisconsin.

I really appreciate Mike taking time from his busy news schedule to discuss his career and Blizzard Brawl. On a side note, our paths crossed years ago, when Mike, Then with the Schaumburg Flyers minor league baseball team) granted me press credentials to cover the team.

Melissa Archer Shout Out to Johngy's Beat

I have followed actress Melissa Archer's career for more than 20 years. I even had the pleasure of interviewing her at a convention a few years ago. That interview is at On the Beat With Melissa Archer.
Melissa has remained active in all sorts of projects. Now in her early 40s, Melissa is as bueatiful as ever. More importantly, she is a real sweetheart.
Over the years, she has sent a few shout outs (see column on the left). Most recently, she sent another.
To return the favor and because it is a lot of fun, check out Melissa on Instagram. She posts great pictures, interesting messages, updates on her career and more.
Thank you again to Melissa. Hopefully, I will see Melissa again sometime to thank her in person.

On the Beat With Steve Ahrendt of the Chicago Knocklouts

I have interviewed Steve Ahrendt a few times in the past, but those interviews were about wrestling. Today, I feature an interview with Steve all about Chicago Knockouts Roller Derby.
Earlier this week, my podcast partner Tommy Else and I interviewed Crimson Vixen, the founder and still active skater for the Chicago Knockouts Roller Derby league. Yesterday, I talked to announcer Steve Ahrendt to get another view on the CKO. That interview is at On the Beat With Steve Ahrendt.
Ahrendt has been the subject of several of my other interviews, but those were about his various roles on the Chicago-area wrestling scene. Perhaps best known as a longtime, well-respected broadcaster, Ahrendt has been a GM, manager and more.
Chicago Knockouts roller derby has been described as legitimate sport with a little wrestling theatrics. With that in mind, Ahrendt would be the perfect choice to broadcast bouts.
The interview started with Ahrendt discussing how he got involved and hooked on CKO. Worlds merged as CKO skater Cactus Rack and Ahrendt met at a wrestling event.
While there are similarities between wrestling and derby, obviously the action is vastly different. Ahrendt explained the differences in preparing to broadcast and the actual act of announcing during the bouts. Ever humble, he also admitted, after just a few bouts behind the mic, he is still learning. Having heard him call the action, I was very impressed with how he relayed the action, while revving up the crowd.
Knowing everyone involved in roller derby has interesting names, I asked why he still uses his given name. I admitted, I was struggling trying to think of a good moniker to play off his name. I also revealed my name of “Beltin' John” given to me years ago from another derby league.
This Saturday, the CKO season comes down to one highly-anticipated bout for the title. The Comic Book Crushers take on the Horrific Haunters for the Golden Skate trophy and bragging rights. Ahrendt took the middle ground by not picking a winner, but he promised it would be a tremendous night of action.
Finally, we had a little fun bantering about Crimson Vixen, Marley Quinn or other skaters possibly getting Ahrendt involved in some of the physicality. Perhaps relying on his wrestling background, Ahrendt proclaimed himself ready for anything that came his way.
I will be “On the Beat” for the championship bout and report back here. Check back on TheEveryDayFan.com for my recap and other great sports coverage. Also, follow the Chicago Knockouts and Steve Ahrendt on social media to get all updates.

The Johngy "OR ELSE" Podcast - Ep. 44: Crimson Vixen

Crimson Vixen of the Chicago Knockouts Roller Derby league was the latest guest on The Johngy "OR ELSE" Podcast. My podcast partner Tommy Else and I got to talk derby with her as the CKO prepares for its season-ending championship bout Saturday, November 19. Not only a skater, Crimson Vixen is the league founder.

CKO is a Chicago area-based roller derby league. This version of roller derby combines the theatrics of old school televised roller derby, while having a legit set of rules and real competition. It really is the best of both worlds and it was set in motion by Crimson Vixen.

Falling in love with roller derby in the early 2000s and skating on other teams, she set out to create a league in her vision. Thus, CKO was born. This was not simple labor of love, nor hobby, though. Armed with her passion and bolstered with a keen business sense, Crimson Vixen built CKO into a thriving roller derby league.

Like many other businesses, the pandemic forced CKO on hiatus, but earlier this year the league came back strong. Now based in Homewood, about 30 minutes south of Chicago, CKO is packing the Homewood-Flossmor Auditorium with rabid derby fans.

Crimson Vixen discussed her start and the formation of the league. She explained developing the league, the differences between CKO and other leagues, her name and derby names in general and more. She talked about story-telling, building anticipation and excitement and drawing in the audience, within the confines of true competition.

Looking beyond this season, Crimson Vixen gave us a little info on events in 2023. She also invited us to derby lessons. Might Tommy and I don the skates and learn a little first hand? Stay tuned to see what develops.

We finished with talk of the championship bout this Saturday, November 19. The culmination of the great season will see the Comic Book Crushers facing the Horrific Hunters. This promises to be a smash-mouth, exciting finish to the season with one team hoisting the trophy at night's end.

We will be “On the Beat” to see the action unfold. I will also have more coverage later this week when I interview CKO broadcaster Steve Ahrendt to get his insight.

You can watch the podcast at The Johngy "OR ELSE" Podcast - Ep. 44: Crimson Vixen. You can also listen to it on Spotify.

On the Beat With Ezio Orlandi

Earlier this year, I was impressed with Ezio Orlandi' debut at 2econd Wrestling. After seeing him again recently at 2econd Wrestling's Deep Cut, I was able to procure an interview with him, which can be found at On the Beat With Ezio Orlandi.
Also known as “Beyond Alpha,” Orlandi is a relative newcomer to wrestling, having made his ring debut late last year. Orlandi discussed his start and training under the likes of “The Ego” Robert Anthony, Bryce Benjamin and Kylie Rae, some big names on the Chicago wrestling scene.
Orlandi described his moveset and his finisher. I loved his insight into the evolution of his finishing move. This showed a real maturity beyond his short time in the ring. It also goes back to the great trainer she had and still has. Because of getting more opportunities, Orlandi finds it harder to get more time for training, yet he still manager to keep up.
A local guy, Orlandi often wrestles in front of family and friends. He loves and feeds off the support.
Then we got into a discussion on 2econd Wrestling. At Deep Cut, Orlandi lost a hard fought match against Jackson Larkin. After the match, Larkin left the ring, but his manager Jason Midas approached Orlandi, giving him what appeared to be his business card. Orlandi admitted to me he is in discussions with Midas, but he would not reveal the details. He did confirm he will be wrestling at  Dynasty, 2econd Wrestling's next event, on December 11 in Northbrook, IL. I'm sure Midas will also be there, but will he be in Orlandi's corner.
I don't have that answer yet. I tried getting it from Orlandi on and off camera, but he was pretty tight-lipped or perhaps all isn't decided yet. I will keep trying to get to the bottom of that situation, but I might have to wait for Dynasty to get the final answer.
Dynasty is 2econd Wrestling's anniversary show. Also announced are Arik Cannon, Killa Kate and Sean Login. Of course, the champ Billie Starkz will also be there defending her title, although her opponent hasn't been announced yet.
I appreciate Orlandi's time and consideration. He seems to have a real appreciation for wrestling and his role in it. I look forward to watching his progress at 2econd Wrestling and elsewhere.
