On the Beat With Coach Amber Stocks of the Chicago Sky

I am very excited to be "On the Beat" with the Chicago Sky.  I have been a fan of the Sky since their debut prior to the 2006 WNBA season.  I have been reporting on the Sky on Patch.com, but Wednesday, I attended my first game as a member of the press.  You can read my full recap on the Patch at On the Beat With the Chicago Sky-6/28/17.
I arrived early at the Allstate Arena, expecting to see other media members and a smattering of super-fans.  I saw the media folks, but I also saw a large and quickly-growing crowd of youngsters.  Seriously, I couldn't believe how many kids were already there 90 minutes prior to tipoff.
That crowd just kept getting bigger, eventually topping 10,000.  I'd safely guess the average age was under 20.  They were already excited and loud (and well-behaved, I might add) well before game time.
I have to commend the youths and their adult leaders.  In an age of so many distractions, these kids focused on the game the entire time.  It was quite a spectacle to witness and it bodes well for the future of the Sky and the WNBA.  Today's young fan is tomorrow's ticket-buyer.
The Sky lost 82-75 in a very good game.  Despite falling behind early, the Sky roared back with an 11-0 run and actually led by 1 at halftime.  Unfortunately, the Sky could not keep pace with the Fever, who pulled away and held off the Sky for the win.  Still, a few missed free throws and a successful 3 pointer could have changed the outcome very easily.  I give all due credit to the Fever, but the Sky hung tough.
I took part in the post-game media session.  Coach Amber Stocks started it by praising her team's effort (and rightly so).  This wasn't just notebook-filler stuff.  Coach Stocks was absolutely correct and I am sure her team appreciated the support.
All wasn't just flowery talk though.  Coach Stocks did talk about the deficiencies of the game and the Sky in general.  She gave a valid assessment of the situation.
Coach Stocks also talked about the positive side.  The team scored 24 points in the 4th quarter.  The Sky had a 48-25 rebound advantage.  They had the 11 point run when they were down.  These things all speak of a team not as bad as their 3-11 record would indicate.
I was very impressed with Coach Stocks.  She remained upbeat while being fair.  She was composed and professional.  Answering the tough questions after an even tougher loss isn't easy, but Coach Stocks showed her class and set the example for her team.
I also have to thank her for a small sign of nicety, as she came over and introduced herself to me after the session.  She certainly did not need to do that.  I'm not exactly a major media outlet, but Coach Stocks took a few moments to do so and I appreciated her effort.
Below is Coach Stocks answering the questions in the media session.  Over the next couple days, I will also share the media sessions with Cappie Pondexter and Jessica Breland.  All season, I will continue to provide recurring coverage of the Sky here and on the Patch.
I want to thank the Chicago Sky for their hospitality.  I encourage everyone to go to Sky.WNBA.com to get more info, including their schedule.  Then, take a lesson from the throngs of kids at the game and see for yourself!

Bill Moseley at Days of the Dead Chicago 2016

One of Bill Moseley's first roles was in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2.  Since then, he has built quite an impressive resume.  He has returned many times to the horror genre, as in The Blob, House of 1000 Corpses and more, while not limiting himself to just that area.
Because of the depth of his resume, Moseley is a welcomed guest at any celebrity convention, but he is a natural for horror-related cons like Days of the Dead.  Surprisingly, somehow I had never gotten a picture with Moseley, despite seeing him many times at conventions.  Last year, I finally corrected this oversight at Days of the Dead in Chicago.
Moseley is an interesting guest at Days.  He has appeared there a few times and his lines are always consistently long.  Usually after so many appearances, the lines dwindle a bit, but not with Moseley.  The demand is still strong, which is why he is brought back to Days of the Dead.
Like all of the celebrity guests at Days, Moseley was very engaging.  He eagerly discussed any of his roles and talked horror in general.  He gave each of his fans that special moment.
Moseley is coming back to Days in Indianapolis from June 30-July 2.  Joining him will be George Romero, Dee Snider, wrestlers Sting, Lita, Charles Wright and Kevin Thorn and many more great celebrities.  Check out DaysoftheDead.net for all of the info.

Doug Bradley at Days of the Dead Louisville 2016

Doug Bradley might be the only person who wouldn't get angry at being called "Pinhead."  It's because the English actor is probably best known for his role as the Lead Cenobite "Pinhead" in the Hellraiser film series.
I had crossed paths with Bradley at many previous conventions, but at Days of the Dead Louisville, I finally had a chance to meet him.  He is quite the unique gentleman.
First, he took pictures with fans without charging them.  This might seem natural, but almost all celebrity guests charge for pictures or only give them free if you buy something else.
Bradley appears at these cons to meet his fans and (obviously) to sell merchandise.  We got our picture, but Liza also picked up his book, Behind the Mask of the Horror Actor.  I can't really imagine just grabbibg the free selfie and not paying something.
Despite being a frequent convention guest, Bradley always has a line of fans waiting to meet him.  When you play an iconic character that can be expected.  When you are a class act and fan-friendly, it only adds to the experience.
Thank you Mr. Bradley and thanks to Days for bringing in quality guests.

Shellie Robinson of the Akron Racers

Today, we take a slight detour in our coverage of the reigning back-to-back NPF champion Chicago Bandits to feature outfielder Shellie Robinson of the Akron Racers.  Shellie is one of the first "rival" players I ever met.
At South Carolina-Upstate, during her senior season, Shellie Robinson broke school records for home runs (18), runs (55) and RBI (48).  She was drafted 23rd overall by the Racers in 2015 NPF College Draft and she went on to have a fine rookie season.
In her rookie season, Shellie batted .265 (fifth best on the team).  In 27 games, she collected 18 hits, including 8 extra base hits and four home runs.  She also played errorless on defense.
Shellie is once again contributing to the Racers.  In 14 games, she is hitting .321 with 3 home runs, 9 rbi's and 6 runs scored.
Last season, I made the trek to Akron for a series between the Racers and the Bandits.  It was a great time at the ballpark there.  Over the offseason, I watched the progress via Facebook, as they made improvements in the field.  I am hoping to make another roadtrip this summer.
You can get more info on Shellie and the Racers at AkronRacers.org.  You can also watch all the games of the NPF at NPF-TV.com.

Friendly Encounters: The Killer Bees and John Crowther

Friendly Encounters is a weekly series featuring my friends who have met celebrities.

When we last featured John Crowther, he was with with Nicolai Volkoff.  John was promoting Nicolai Volkoff: The Comic Series.  John was kind enough to give us a little scoop on his next project, too.  That project would feature the Killer Bees (Jumpin' Jim Brunzell and B Brian Blair).  The Killer Bees project is now officially on Kickstarter at Killer Bees: Issue 1.
The Killer Bees: Issue 1 is the biography of The Killer Bees in comic book form, based on interviews with Blair and Brunzell.  Highly successful and extremely popular, The Killer Bees were among the top tag teams from the mid-1980's through the mid-1990's.  They remain popular to this day.
The Killer Bees: Issue 1 promises the same kind of in-depth and behind-the-scenes stories that were featured in the Nicolai Volkoff comic.  There will be stories about the AWA, WWF, UWF and more.  All of this will be accompanied by awesome artistry.
The Killer Bees: Issue 1 is your chance to relive some of the greatest moments in wrestling or to learn more about those times.  It is a championship combination of wrestling history in comic book form.  I love the concept and I look forward to more from John.
Once again, on the Kickstarter page for The Killer Bees, there are several levels of pledges, each coming with a set of rewards.  This is a chance to get a cool comic and to get some other fun stuff, like Killer Bees decals, autographs, trading cards, other similar comic releases and more.  The Kickstarter campaign ends on July 11.
I appreciate John sharing his comics and campaigns here.  They are great quality and I am sure wrestling fans or even plain comic fans will love these comics.

Good Bye, Good Luck and Thank You Angel Bunner

Angel Bunner had a great career at Auburn University.  She was 44-21, with a 2.24 ERA during her four seasons there.  She also had the third-best single-season ERA at 1.53 in 2011.
Bunner became the first Auburn softball player to be taken in the NPF draft, when she was drafted 17th overall by the Carolina Diamonds in 2012.  She also pitched for the NY/NJ Comets.  She joined the Bandits midway through the 2016 season.  She pitched well, but never better than pitching the first six innings of game 3 of the championship series versus the USSSA Pride.  Bunner got the win and earned her place in the history of the Bandits and the hearts of the fans.
Unfortunately, Angel signed with the Pride during the offseason and is pitching for them this season.  In 11 appearances this season, she has an ERA of 1.35.  It's always tough seeing your players go to other teams, but Angel will always be a favorite here for her contributions to the 2016 NPF championship.
I want to publicly thank Angel for her time and consideration during her short stay here.  She was always friendly and professional.  I thank her, too, for helping the Bandits win the title.  I wish her good luck with the Pride and I look forward to seeing her this season, even if she will be wearing the wrong uniform.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #328 Mike McCready & Bill Withers

This is a weekly series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebrities wearing sports jerseys.  Today, we continue working our way alphabetically through MLB teams.

Musician Mike McCready was born in Pensacola, FL, but moved to Seattle as a youth.  He is the lead guitarist and one of the founding members of Pearl Jam, who were recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  McCready stayed true to his Seattle connection by wearing the Mariners jersey, while playing the National Anthem at a game and earning a Celebrity Jersey card in the process.
Bill Withers was born in Slab Fork, WV, one of the greatest town names I have heard.  The musician has won three Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005.  He went old-school for his Celebrity Jersey Card, which actually bends the time continuum, as the Mariners did not exist at the time of this card's release.

Good Bye, Good Luck and Thank You Michelle Gascoigne

Michelle Gascoigne had an outstanding career at Oklahoma, going 49-7 record with a 1.65 ERA.  She threw a perfect game, along with setting records and receiving awards and achievements.  This lead to her being drafted by the Bandits seventh overall in the 2013 NPF draft.
Gascoigne went on to have a solid career with the Bandits.  She was a fierce compeitor on the mound and a lovable fan favorite off the mound.  She was a big part of the pitching staff that lead the team to two straight NPF titles.
While playing with the Bandits, she started her coaching career.  First she was a Graduate Manager at Oklahoma, then an assistant coach at Northwestern, a position she still holds.  She has a bright future in coaching.  I am hoping she stays in the Chicago area, but I think many schools will be calling her soon.  Either way, I'll continue following her career.
Gascoigne was one of the pitchers I sought out prior to my one at bat against the Bandits in a charity game.  Like the others, she said I pretty much had no chance and she was right.  It all was in fun though and I appreciated her talking to me about it and not just brushing me off, like the over-excited fan that I was.
Gascoigne was always a class act on and off the field, in interviews or just casual ballpark chats.  I appreciate her time and consideration.  I wish her great success at Northwestern and I am excited to be able to continue covering her there.  I thank her for all you have given the Bandits fans and me.  Good luck and Go Cats!

On The Beat with Ellen Roberts of the Chicago Bandits 2017

Covering the Chicago Bandits is one fun summer experience.  Today, that experience includes our interview with pitcher Ellen Roberts.
Ellen is another member of the Aussie Eight with the Bandits.  Prior to the Bandits though, Ellen starred at the University of Memphis.  She holds the school record for career saves, innings pitched, starts and appearances.  She also showed some offensive pop, hitting a homer in an American Athletic Conference quarterfinal game in 2014.
She signed with the Bandits last offseason.  As of this writing, she had 16 appearances, including 3 starts, with an 1-2 record with one save and a 3.73 ERA.  She also has 21 strike outs in 20.2 innings pitched.
We talked to Ellen about playing all over the world and about the 2020 Olympics.  We also talked about playing with her Aussie mates on the Bandits, first impressions of Chicago and some other fun stuff.  Of course, I had to ask about her hitting.  Like a true pro, she downplayed it, but gave a thoughtful answer.
Ellen comes to the Bandits with a great attitude and an impressive resume.  We certainly will need her pitching talent as the season wears on and Ellen is definitely up for that challenge.  We've only seen a small sampling and bigger things are ahead for her.
I thank Ellen for her time and consideration.  She's an elite athlete and a real pleasure to watch.
I thank the Bandits for their continued hospitality.  They are a fantastic organization on and off the field.  Go to ChicagoBandits.com for all of the info and go to a game for all of the fun!

On The Beat with Abby Ramirez of the Chicago Bandits 2017

We are back "On the Beat" for our fourth season with the reigning back-to-back National Pro Fastpitch champion Chicago Bandits.  Today, our coverage brings us to Abby Ramirez.
She originally caught my eye, because I had read about her prep career, including being named the Illinois Gatorade Softball Player of the Year in 2013.  I wasn't necessarily even following women's softball then, but i knew of Abby!
Because of the Bandits and the NPF, I actually started to watch women's collegiate softball a few seasons ago.  Abby was one of the first collegiate players I remember watching.  She collected a bunch of awards and honors, including All-Big Ten Defensive Team at 2nd base in 2014, while playing for the University of Michigan.
After going undrafted, she signed with the Bandits last offseason.  I am sure she was excited to join her hometown team, but I was also excited to see her play here, after watching her for years at Michigan.
In our interview, we talked to Abby about playing under the legendary Coach Carol Hutchins, joining her hometown team, her favorite things in Chicago and more.  Though only a few games into her NPF career, we asked about her first impressions and we loved her answer.
I think Abby will have a long and successful career in the NPF.  Bandit Nation already has embraced her, but that love will continue to grow.  It's always special to watch local players succeed with the Bandits.
I really appreciate Abby's time and consideration.  She is an excellent addition to the Bandits.  Welcome home Abby!
I also want to thank the Bandits for their continued hospitality.  The organization and the individuals make this such a joy.  I encourage everyone to join the fun.  Head to ChicagoBandits.com for more info and then head to a game (or two).

On The Beat with Taylah Tsitsikronis of the Chicago Bandits 2017

We are very happy to continue our coverage of the back-to-back reigning National Pro Fastpitch champion Chicago Bandits.  Today, our coverage brings us to newcomer Taylah Tsitsikronis.
Taylah was one of four Aussie Spirit players to join the NPF last season.  With the Pennsylvania Rebellion, Taylah played in 12 games, hitting .100 in 20 at bats, with one home run, one rbi and one run scored.
Taylah and 7 other Aussies joined the Bandits for the 2017 season.  She has already gotten into 8 games, hitting .200 with 2 rbi and 3 runs scored.
In between her stops in the NPF, she played in the World Cup of Softball and the Women’s World Softball Championship.  If that isn't enough, the 2020 Olympics are also on her radar.
Clearly Taylah is one talented and busy player.  I am really looking forward to watching Taylah for the rest of the 2017 season as she settled into her role with the Bandits.  I see big things ahead for Taylah.
In our interview below, we discussed all of this.  I also asked her about catching versus playing other positions and some other fun stuff.
Being with 7 of her Aussie mates must help, but playing in a foreign land has to be a challenge, especially playing in the NPF, where the best of the best of the United States play.  Taylah is certainly up for that challenge.
I really appreciate Taylah's time and consideration.  Doing interviews in a foreign land might be as challenging as playing here, but Taylah was awesome.  It was a real pleasure meeting her.
As always, I thank the Chicago Bandits for their continued hospitality.  I encourage everyone to check out a game and support these great athletes.  Go to ChicagoBandits.com for more info.

Friendly Encounters: Debbie Gibson and Josh Watko

This is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

Josh Watko is the creative force behind JW's Wrestling Memorabilia, the best of wrestling memorabilia and memories.  The site is filled with great wrestling stuff, but Josh is not a one trick pony.
Josh attends a lot of comic con or celebrity appearances in his area.  At one such show, he met singer Debbie Gibson.  Josh's comment on his picture was "Debbie Gibson and I...two '80s icons and we're still hot as Hell."  He is quite the kidder.
I have to agree with him about Debbie.  She still looks great.  Even when I saw her up close at a different event, I thought she looked great.
Sorry Josh, I like you and all, but I can't compare you and Debbie.  On the other hand, Josh runs a much better website that she does.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #327 Lucille Ball & Bob Hope

This is a weekly series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebrities wearing sports jerseys.  Today, we continue working our way alphabetically through MLB teams.

Actress and all-around entertaining legend Lucille Ball was born in Jamestown, NY.  She rose to major fame opposite husband Desi on television's I Love Lucy.  I don't know the story behind this picture, but it did involve Bob Hope, then part-owner of the Indians.  I am sure it was something wacky.  Ball gets major extra points for wearing the full uniform.
Like Ball, Bob Hope was an entertainment legend.  Hope was born in England.  Sometime after rising to fame, he became part-owner of the Cleveland Indians.  This allowed me to make the first Celebrity Jersey Card featuring a pipe and a super-large cigarette.

On The Beat with Texas Charge Asst. Coach Roman Foore 2017

The reigning back-to-back National Pro Fastpitch champion Chicago Bandits are off to a great start and we are very happy to be covering them for our fourth season.  Today, our coverage finds Texas Charge Assistant Coach Roman Foore, formerly of the Bandits.
It's always strange seeing familiar faces returning with different teams.  Such was the case when I saw Coach Roman sporting the blue and green of the Charge.
Coach Roman was a steady force and a big part of the success of the Bandits during his time here.  He was also great to me whenever I needed interviews or just for general chat.  He was a good sport, even when I talked about serious topics, like the mustache luck or the Minnesota Twins GM job.  Coach Roman rolled with it, no matter what the topic was.  I appreciate all of it.
The Bandits underwent a huge change in the offseason and Coach Roman found a new home with the Charge.  While I hated to see him go, perhaps it worked out right for him, as he is now coaching with his wife, as you will hear in the interview below.
In addition to discussing the latest addition to the Charge coaching staff, Coach Roman talked about returning to coach against the Bandits, winning titles, and more.  Of course, I also asked him about the GM job with the Texas Rangers.
Thank you to Coach Roman for his time and consideration this weekend and over the last few seasons.  Good luck in Texas, as well.  Thank you to the Chicago Bandits for their continued hospitality.  For more info on the Bandits, check out ChicagoBandits.com.

Good Bye, Good Luck and Thank You Amanda Kamekona

Amanda Kamekona's stay with the Chicago Bandits was relatively short, but it was meaningful.  Kamekona was signed by the Bandits in midseason and immediately made an impact.  She was a spark that the team needed as they made their playoff run.
Kamekona
In three seasons at Cal State Fullerton, Kamekona hit .317 in 499 at bats.  She had 20 home runs, 83 rbi's and 88 runs scored.  She went on to UCLA, where she earned first-team All-Pac-10, second-team All-Pacific Region and third-team All-American honors after leading the Bruins in home runs (14), runs batted in (46), runs scored (47), doubles (17) and slugging percentage (.663).
She started her NPF career with the Carolina Diamonds in 2012.  She also has played for the NY/NJ Comets and the USSSA Pride.
She always seemed to come through with a big hit for the Bandits last season.  AK47 also quickly became a fan favorite.  Her enthusiasm was well-received by Bandit Nation.
I had the pleasure of seeing her hit a big home run against the Racers in Akron and I got a quick word with her after the game.  That Akron roadtrip was one of the highlights of my 2016.
Unfortunately, AK47 will be playing for the Texas Charge in 2017.  While she did not have the longevity as some of the other departed Bandits, she was a big part of the last NPF title and we will miss her in Chicago.  It will be sad to see her with the Charge, but of course, we wish her well.  I appreciate what she brought to the Bandits.  I also am grateful for her time and consideration in talking to us always.  Good luck to AK47 and thanks to her for being a part of the rich history of the Bandits.

Kane Hodder at Days of the Dead Chicago 2016

Despite the picture below, Kane Hodder likes me.  Actually, he likes all of his fans.  That's why he chokes us.
Hodder would have to like the fans and what he does to be patient enough to "choke" hundreds of fans at every convention.  He never seems to get tired of it, although I couldn't blame him if he did.
Hodder is an actor and stuntman with a lengthy resume.  He is the first actor to portray Jason Vorhees from the Friday the 13th franchise multiple times.  He also did some voice work in our friend Bobby Easley's The Devil Dogs of Kilo Company.
On KaneHodderKills.com, you can learn more about Hodder, including info on "Unmasked: The True Life Story the World's Most Prolific Cinematic Killer."  I can promise that the book will entertain you.  I can also promise Hodder will be happy to sign it for you.  Asking to be choked is up to you though.  Sometimes, he gets a little too happy and really clamps that choke on me or maybe it is just me.

On The Beat With Taylore Fuller of the Chicago Bandits 2017

We are back "On the Beat" with the Chicago Bandits for our fourth season of coverage and we enjoy it more each year (and each game).  Today, our coverage shines the spotlight on newcomer, catcher Taylore Fuller.
Taylore was a star coming out of high school, as the nation's 6th ranked catcher and 38th ranked overall prospect out of high school.  She was an outstanding player on great teams at the University of Florida.  The Gators were four time Regional Champions and two time Women's College World Series winners during her time there.  She finished her career at Florida ranking in the Top Ten in home runs (36), grand slams (8) and HBP (49), while playing catcher, 3rd base and left field.
She was selected 34th overall in the 6th round of the 2016 NPF Draft by the ScrapYard Dawgs.  Ironically, she made her pro debut in Rosemont.  Overall, she started 40 games, hitting .202 with 5 home runs,11 rbi's and 15 runs scored, while throwing out 32% of baserunners.
Taylore was traded to the Bandits with Emily Crane in a trade which sent Taylor Edwards and Brittany Cervantes to the Dawgs.  While we were sad to see those players leave, we welcome Taylore and Emily to Bandit Nation!
In the interview below, I talked to Taylore about her impressive collegiate resume, the differences in playing professional softball and other fun topics.  We also got serious and talked about #TeamHeather, a sad, but inspiring story going back to her time at Florida and continuing today.
It was a pleasure meeting Taylore, like it has been a pleasure covering the Bandits over the last four seasons.  I really hope my enthusiasm spreads to you all.  For more info on this great team, check out ChicagoBandits.com.  For more interviews, check out our Johngy's Beat Chicago Bandits playlist on YouTube.  For more fun, go to a game!
I thank the Chicago Bandits for their continued hospitality over the last four seasons.  I also thank Taylore for her time and consideration.

On The Beat With Natalie Hernandez of the Chicago Bandits 2017

We are loving being back "On the Beat" with the back-to-back reigning National Pro Fastpitch champion Chicago Bandits.  Today, our coverage brings us to Natalie Hernandez, one of a handful of players we have interviewed in each of our four seasons.
Natalie was a star shortstop at the University of Illinois at Chicago.  She made the Bandits after an open tryout and has been producing ever since.  Sometimes, she is called a "utility" player, because of her versatility, but last season, she was seventh on the team in games started, games played and at bats, which basically means she was a regular starter, just at a few different positions.
Her versatility (and her attitude about it) shows the type of professional that Natalie is.  She is all about the team.  It has been a pleasure watching her develop over the last four seasons and even more of a pleasure to speak to her and know her a bit.  She's an elite athlete, a great role model and a fine young woman.
In our interview below, I asked Natalie about playing so many positions.  As expected, her answer showed her the athlete mindset which makes her special.
Since I have interviewed Natalie a few times before and since there is one very special fan of Natalie, I did something a little different with this interview.  I asked superfan and young softball player MacKenzie Parker (the subject of yesterday's Friendly Encounters piece) to submit a couple questions for Natalie.  Kenzie was more than up for the challenge, giving me two excellent questions.  Natalie was happy to answer the questions and to follow up with a little discussion on what fans like Kenzie mean to her.
I really enjoyed this interview and "working" with Kenzie.  This is a perfect example of the best parts of the NPF and the Bandits.  This is just one reason why I love doing what I do.  I hope one day to be able to interview Kenzie as a Bandit.
Natalie is a great example of the quality of athlete and person playing for the Bandits.  They truly are a great team on and off the field.  Go to ChicagoBandits.com for more info and go to a game for a lot more fun!
As always, I thank the Chicago Bandits for their hospitality and allowing me access.  I also thank Natalie for her time and consideration over the last four seasons!
Finally, thank you to Kenzie and her family for helping me with this!  Keep up the great work, Kenzie.  You're going to do fantastic things in life.

Friendly Encounters: Natalie Hernandez and Kenzie Parker

This is a weekly series about friends who have met celebrities.

Today is a very special edition of Friendly Encounters.  It warms my heart and is one of many examples of why I love covering the Chicago Bandits.
Natalie Hernandez is one of a handful of Bandits who have been with the team the four years I have covered them.  A star shortstop at UIC, she earned her spot on the team via an open tryout.  Over her four seasons, Natalie has shown her versatility and team attitude by playing several positions.  She is also one of the most popular players.
One young fan who agrees with me is MacKenzie Parker.  Kenzie is a 12 year old softball player from Michigan who just might be Natalie's biggest fan.  Her goal is to become a professional softball player (and my goal is to someday interview her as a pro).
Kenzie and her family are big supporters of the Bandits.  They have made the trek to see the Bandits play in Rosemont and Kenzie has enjoyed the "Bandit for a Day" experience and I know the Bandits enjoyed having her there.
Obviously, this is about the special relationship between Kenzie and Natalie and there is nobody better to discuss that than Kenzie herself.  I'll let Kenzie take it from here.

I started playing softball for the YMCA when I was 4, until I was old enough to play T-ball, I love playing softball my favorite positions are pitcher and 1st baseman, though I do play other positions if my team needs me. It is a lot of fun, but a lot of hard work. I practice with my team and on my own. I have played on my travel team now for 3 years. I was 11 when I hit my first home run out of the ballpark, which was really cool.
I think one if the things I am most proud of is working hard through the fall and winter to be asked to play on the team, When I tried out I did not make the team, but the hard work I put in got me a place in this travel team. One day I hope to play in college and eventually play in the NPF. I also would like to coach someday. I often help out when my younger sister's team practices, when I can.
My favorite player is Natalie Hernandez. I really look up to her. She worked out to be part of the Bandits as I did to make my team, always giving her best in the field, hitting and helping her teammates. You can really tell she loves the game and I admire that. She also takes time for girls like me. My parents drove me from Michigan to watch a game. I was Bandit for a day. Natalie made sure to say "hi" and that meant a lot. One day I hope to be like her, and maybe inspire someone like she inspires me to always work hard and love the game. Thank you Natalie for encouraging me to do my best in softball and in school.

I can add nothing more to this.  Kenzie stated it all very well.  Thank you to Kenzie and her family for contributing here.
I encourage everyone to check back tomorrow for my interview with Natalie, featuring some questions submitted by Kenzie. It was a lot of fun!

On The Beat With Chelsea Forkin of the Chicago Bandits 2017

We are back on the Beat with the back-to-back reigning National Pro Fastpitch champion Chicago Bandits and we could not be happier.  Currently, the Bandits sit in first place with a record of 6-1 as they head out for their first roadtrip of the season.  Today, our coverage brings us to newcomer Chelsea Forkin.
Australian born Chelsea comes to the Bandits with an impressive resume.  She won three Australian National Championship titles with the Western Australian Flames and one title with the Queensland Heat.  Prior to that, she was the first girl to ever play for the boys' U14 Australian National Baseball team.  She also represented Australia in softball at the junior and senior national levels.
She signed with the Texas Charge for the 2016 season and hit .242 with 3 home runs and 7 rbi's in her first NPF season.  She also had a perfect fielding percentage while handling 55 chances in her utility role.
This season, Chelsea and seven other Australian players comprised the Elite Eight who signed with the Bandits.  It is a unique situation and there is no better place for it than Chicago!
We talked to Chelsea about her path to softball, the differences between playing in Australia and the NPF, playing against and with her fellow Aussies and more.
I hope these interviews are raising awareness and generating interest in the Bandits.  The organization and the athletes individually deserve the support of Chicago.  For more info on the Bandits, go to ChicagoBandits.com and then go to a game!
Once again, I want to thank the Chicago Bandits for their continued hospitality in allowing me access.  I also want to thank Chelsea for her time and consideration.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #326 Benicio Del Toro & Carlos Santana

This is a weekly series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebrities wearing sports   We continue working our way alphabetically through the MLB teams.jerseys.

Born in Puerto Rico, Benicio Del Toro rose to fame in Hollywood.  Most notably, he won an Academy Award, BAFTA Award, Golden Globe Award, and Screen Actors Guild Award for his portrayal of Javier Rodríguez in the 2000 film Traffic.  It was his performance in The Fan that earned him his Celebrity Jersey Card though.
Legendary musician Carlos Santana was born in San Francisco, CA.  He stayed true to his heritage and his hometown when he wore the Gigantes jersey and earned a spot on a Celebrity Jersey Card.  Ordinarily, I'd subtract points for that sort of non-baseball hat, but it works for Santana.  I also resisted the urge to say that he is so smooth.

Sandahl Bergman at Days of the Dead Indianapolis 2016

Cuzz Gekas and I met Sandahl Bergman at Days of the Dead last year.  Once again, Days brought in a great guest who hadn't done many appearances.
We had the pleasure of talking at length to Sandahl.  Among her thoughts on co-stars, she talked glowingly about working with (one of our all-time favorites) Rowdy Roddy Piper in Hell Comes To Frogtown.  She described him as kind, funny and a bit crazy, exactly how we knew him.
She talked about meeting her fans and spending real time with them at these events.  She backed up her talk by actually spending quality time with every fan who approached her.  Of course, it made her line move slowly, but nobody complained, because everyone got a real interaction with her.
Sandahl was one of the real highlights of Days of the Dead Indy 2016.  I'm looking forward to more gems this year.  Check out DaysoftheDead.net for more info on this horror con.

On The Beat With Haylie Wagner Of The Chicago Bandits 2017

Being back "On the Beat" with the back-to-back reigning National Pro Fastpitch champion Chicago Bandits is one great feeling.  Today, the Johngy's Beat coverage brings us to newcomer Haylie Wagner.
Haylie had a great career at the University of Michigan.  She started her career by winning the conference’s Pitcher of the Year and Freshman of the Year Awards in 2012.  She finished with a 25-3 record, a 1.75 ERA and a six-to-one strikeout-to-walk ratio in her senior season.  In her career, she was a three-time All-Big Ten Conference player, while earning All-American honors twice.
Somehow, she was not drafted in the NPF.  That was a fact that slipped by me, as I assumed those stats merited a selection.  In the interview below, Haylie was polite about my mistake.
Haylie signed with the Pennsylvania Rebellion, posting a 3-4 record, with a 2.60 ERA and 3 saves in her rookie season.  Last season, she went 3-6, with an ERA of 5.47 and 4 saves in 26 games, 6 of which were starts.
Haylie joined the Bandits as a free agent early in the year.  Especially with her Big 10 background, she is a welcome addition to the pitching staff.
We interviewed Haylie prior to the Season Opener.  She then went out and picked up wins in the first two games.  Again (like with Emily Carosone), I have to question whether there is a connection.  Seriously, obviously, this is all Haylie's doing.  Either way, it is a fantastic start and a sign of great things to come.
We talked to Haylie about her path to Michigan and the differences between the Rebellion and the Bandits.  We also talked about her biggest surprise from college to the NPF and other fun stuff.
I am really excited about Haylie joining the Bandits.  I followed her at Michigan and I know the type of pitcher she can be.  It's going to be fun watching her pitch here!
I want to thank the Chicago Bandits for their continued hospitality.  I also want to thank Haylie for her time and consideration.  I hope everyone checks out the Bandits in action and also on the web at ChicagoBandits.com.  They are a great bunch of women athletes and Haylie will fit in well.

On The Beat With Brenna Moss Of The Chicago Bandits 2017

It's great to be back "On the Beat" with the back-to-back reigning National Pro Fastpitch champion Chicago Bandits.  Today, our coverage brings us to third year outfielder Brenna Moss.
Brenna had a great career at Fresno State.  She was a 3x All-Mountain West First Team selection, as well as being the 2014 MWC Defensive Player of the Year.  She left Fresno State as their all-time leader in stolen bases with 104.  She was selected by the Bandits in the 3rd round (13th overall) in the 2015 NPF College Draft.
In her rookie season, she hit .177 with 1 home run, 10 rbi's, 10 runs scored and 5 stolen bases.  She followed that by hitting .197 with 5 rbi's, 8 runs scored and 9 stolen bases.
We interviewed Brenna early in the day on the Season Opener.  We talked a bit of fun stuff, including her "bucket list" wish of playing with a tiger cub and what would be on her headphone playlist.  We also talked a bit more serious stuff including her speed, playing on the championship teams, her personal goals this season and more.
Brenna is another of the great young women on this team.  Not only is Brenna an elite athlete, she is a classy young womand and role model.  She's a perfect fit in Chicago on this team.
As always, I appreciate the hospitality of the Chicago Bandits.  I also thank Brenna for her time and consideration.  I encourage everyone to check out the Bandits at the ballpark and at ChicagoBandits.com.  The Bandits are truly something special.

On The Beat With Emily Carosone of the Chicago Bandits 2017

We are happy to be back "On the Beat" for the back-to-back reigning National Pro Fastpitch champion Chicago Bandits.  Today, our coverage takes us to infielder Emily Carosone.
Emily had an excellent career at Auburn University.  Upon leaving Auburn, she ranked first in the Auburn record books in single-season runs (88) and RBI (80) and second for single-season batting average (.438).  She also won the Most Valuable Player award at the 2015 SEC Tournament.
The Bandits selected Emily 22nd overall in the 4th round of the 2016 NPF Draft.  In her rookie season, she hit ,225 with 11 rbi's and 11 runs scored.  She also lead the league by being hit by a pitch 12 times.  She only made 2 errors for a .978 fielding percentage.  It was a solid rookie season and gave hints and hope for even better things to come.
Emily started the 2017 season with a game winning rbi.  Her hit in the bottom of the 7th was the winner as the Bandits topped the Akron Racers 3-2 in an exciting game.
Earlier on game day, we talked to Emily at the ballpark.  Is it coincidence that she was the "Player of the Game" after talking to us?  Obviously, it was all Emily, but I am still going to glom onto some credit because of the timing.
We talked to Emily about being hit so often.  Is it something she works on?  We also talked about watching versus playing softball, her potential coaching future and more fun stuff.
Emily is settling in at second base and I see a bright and long future for her in Chicago.  First year adjustments are always challenging, but Emily met the challenge and had a solid first season.
I thank the Chicago bandits for their hospitality.  I thank Emily for her time and consideration.  I encourage everyone to check out ChicagoBandits.com for more info, including schedules, news and all other Bandits-related news.

Friendly Encounters: Jim Cornette and Todd Fulkerson

This is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

I came across Todd Fulkerson many years ago while I was looking for some autographed pictures.  Todd runs Todd's Autograph Arena, a great site featuring tons of great autographs he has gotten.
Todd is pretty well known in the autograph circles and in wrestling circles, too.  His autograph pursuits are not limited to wrestlers, but he definitely has gotten most of the big names from the past and present.  He's got me beat!
Todd has even done some fun videos with Hulk Hogan, Tammy "Sunny" Sytch and others.  They are testament to the relationships he has with some of the celebrities.  They know and respect Todd for all of the work he has done over the years.
Recently, Todd attended WrestleMania 33.  One of the many wrestling personalities he met was Jim Cornette.  Todd got a picture with Cornette and his infamous tennis racquet.  That is one legendary picture.
ToddsAutographArena.com is really a great site and Todd is a good guy.  If he is going to an event, he will get a signed picture for you at a very reasonable price.  Believe me, this is not an easy task and Todd does it very professionally.  I highly recommend him.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #325 Jeff Bridges & Bob Newhart

This is a weekly series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebrities wearing sports   We continue working our way alphabetically through the MLB teams.jerseys.

Jeff Bridges comes from an acting family and actually made his screen debut on Sea Hunt, starring his father Lloyd and brother Beau.  For his Celebrity Jersey Card, I got to go back to vintage Topps.  Bridges is still active, which is much longer than he ever could have played pro ball.
Comedian and actor Bob Newhart was born just outside of Chicago, IL.  Newhart's Celebrity Jersey Card is a rarity.  Not only is the card from the early yars, the picture itself is from way back, too.  I wonder about the significance of the #61.  At the time of this card, only littleused Earl Robinson had worn #61.  In more recent years, Chan Ho Park and Josh Beckett wore it.

On The Beat With Sammy Marshall the Chicago Bandits 2017

The Chicago Bandits had a rough offseason, losing many players to retirements or trades.  Fortunately, Sammy Marshall is not one of those former Bandits.
Sammy is entering her third year with the Bandits.  After an excellent career at Western Illinois University, Sammy became the third player from WIU to ever be drafted to play professionally.  In her first season with the Bandits, she went hitless in a handful of plate appearances, but she showed signs of things to come.  She scored 11 runs and added six stolen bases.
In 2016, Sammy was given more playing time and she took advantage of it, blossoming into one of the leaders on the team.  She batted .254 with 29 runs, 8 rbi's and 15 stolen bases.
Sammy was also one of the most popular players, too.  Aside from her loyal group of family and friends, she always had a line of young fans cheering for her and wanting pictures and autographs.
If all of this wasn't enough, Sammy took a vocal role on the team on social media.  One of the most impressive things was when she politely chided some fans on Facebook for inadvertently slighting one fan.  Sammy's response was mature, thoughtful and concise, without being preachy or overbearing.
That showed me several things.  First, Sammy does follow the interactions on FB and not just those involving her.  Two, she cares enough about all the fans to speak up.  Three, she has enough confidence and conviction to actually speak up.  It was a very mature and compassionate thing to do.  I truly gained even more respect for her from that one post.
Since I have written so glowingly about Sammy, I must take one small, humorous jab.  The fans are waiting for an inside-the-park home run.  With her incredible speed, it really is only a matter of time.  It would be cool if it was her first home run.
In the interview below, I asked Sammy about hitting an inside-the-park homer.  We also talked about her speed, her family support system and other fun stuff.
Thank you to the Chicago bandits for allowing me access.  Thanks, too, to Sammy for her time and consideration and for her part in winning two consecutive NPF titles.  Sammy is a special person and player.  It's been a pleasure watching her develop and knowing her.
Stay tuned here all season for coverage of Sammy and the Bandits.  You can also go to ChicagoBandits.com for more info, including schedules, special offers and merchandise.

Good Bye, Good Luck and Thank You Sara Moulton

Sara Moulton had a great career at the University of Minnesota.  She racked up 112 wins and 5 no-hitters, along with a bunch of records, awards and achievements.
She was drafted by the Chicago Bandits, fifth overall in the 2014 National Pro Fastpitch draft.  She went on to pitch well over her three seasons with the Bandits.
Sara accomplished a lot on the field, but she accomplished more off the field.  She went through a tremendous transformation, losing many pounds through diet, exercise and determination.  It was great to see her get healthier and attain her goals.  She was an inspiration to all who saw her.
She also became part of Strike Zone Sports, a fastpitch training center in Eagan, Minnesota.  Obviously, this is a business for all, but it is also a passion for the instructors, including former Minnesota Gopher Michelle Harrison.  Like so many of the women softballers, the instructors really want to build the game and help the young players.
I had the pleasure of sitting at Sara's table at a Bandits banquet in 2015.  It was so much fun interacting with her and the other Bandits away from the field.
Sara is the Editor and a writer for FastpitchNews.com.  It's just another example of Sara sharing her knowledge and passing it on to others.
Sara recently announced her retirement from the NPF.  This is another tough loss for the NPF, the Bandits and the fans.  I interviewed Sara every year and it was fun watching her development as a player and person.
Sara will go on to do more great things, but she will always have a place in the hearts of Bandits' fans.  I will miss her spirit and enthusiasm.
Thank you to Sara for always having time to talk in or out of the media room.  Good luck with Strike Zone Sports and with all else.  You will always be a fun part of my NPF memories.

Good Bye, Good Luck and Thank You Taylor Edwards

Like her twin sister Tatum, Taylor Edwards was a major star at Nebraska, racking up a long list of awards and accomplishments.  Unlike Tatum, Taylor never saw action on the mound, but she saw plenty behind the plate.
With Tatum, Taylor started her National Pro Fastpitch career with the Pennsylvania Rebellion.  She was traded with Tatum to the Chicago bandits and immediately entrenched herself as the top catcher and a major slugger.
My first real interaction with Taylor occurred during my at bat against the Bandits in a charity game.  Taylor advised me to step up a bit in the box.  She also asked me where I'd like the pitch.  I appreciated her efforts, but I had no chance either way.  Still, her banter really made me feel good, like part of the team or at least part of the Bandits experience.
I had the pleasure of interviewing Taylor three times.  Two were my regular interviews in Rosemont, while the other was in Akron.  Prior to the game, Iselected Taylor as my "Pick of the Game" and she did not disappoint.  She absolutely crushed a home run and had a great game.  I interviewed her after and told her about my pick.  Talking to Taylor in Akron on such a beautiful night after her fantastic game will always be one of the reaal highlights for me.
Unfortunately, the Bandits traded Taylor to the Scrapyard Dawgs earlier this year.  I am sure she will continue to flourish there and at least we get to see her a few times in Chicago.  It will be hard seeing her in the opposing uniform, but I bet she gets a huge round of applause and deservedly so.
Taylor is a great player and a fine young women.  She was such a pleasure to watch and to know.  I really enjoyed seeing her play and talking to her around the park.  I hope to get a quick interview with her at some point this season.
Thank you to Taylor for her great effort over the last two seasons.  Thanks for always having time for an interview or even just a little chatter.  Taylor is a special player and a special person.  Good luck Taylor.  We'll be cheering for you always.
Taylor Edwards and me in Rosemont, IL-July 2016.
