Mascot Week: Swiper

This is Mascot Week.  All week. I shall be featuring some of my favorite mascots.

Obviously, I have had many pictures with Swiper. I have spent a lot of time with him and the in-game entertainment crew of the Chicago Bandits in the bullpen during games.
Swiper has been entertaining fans for 14 seasons. I don't know his species, but he is one of the better looking mascots.
The official duties of Swiper include, waving, giving high-fives, posing with fans and promoting the Bandits through various appearances at community events. Having been around Swiper for 5+ seasons, I have seen him do his duties to the fullest. While the Bandits themselves are the main attraction, Swiper has a loyal and rabid fan base. I never miss the chance at a picture with the big blue mascot.
As a little side note, I almost was part of the Swiper history. I was at the ball park very early doing interviews and the usual Swiper was running late. I gleefully volunteered to fill in until Swiper arrived. Unfortunately, due to liability concerns, my offer was politely declined. Fortunately, Swiper arrived in time anyway.
We are still a few months away from the start of National Pro Fastpitch, but i am looking out for any promotional event. Maybe I will see Swiper then, but if not, I look forward to hanging with the Swiper crew at the Bandits games.
You can go to ChicagoBandits.com for more info on the team. You can also follow the Chicago Bandits on Facebook for updates.

Mascot Week: Beeker

This is Mascot Week.  All week. I shall be featuring some of my favorite mascots.

Beeker first appeared on television's The Muppet Show during the second season.  Dr. Bunsen Honeydew had worked solo during the first season, but Beeker was added for the second as his "victim" when his experiments inevitably went wrong.  Beeker added a new layer of comedy to the sketches and the show.
At C2E2, some creative fan attended dressed as Beeker.  I applaud this fan and told him/her how much I appreciated the costume.
At these cons, you see a lot of cosplaying (whether officially or just for fun).  You see way too many Harley Quinn and Joker people.  Many other characters are fairly popular, too.  You hardly ever see a muppet-themed character.
I think there should be more of this.  Why be one of 25 Harley Quinn's, when you can be the only Beeker.  (Don't even get me started on the lack of respect for Aquaman.)  Beeker stood out.  Dozens of people got pictures with Beeker.  Meanwhile, all of the Harley Quinn and Joker people went virtually unnoticed.  Fans are desensitized to these characters due to overpopulation.
If you are attending the con and just want to have fun, dress however you want.  On the other hand, if you want to be noticed, if you want to be special, pick an original, but memorable character like Beeker.

Mascot Week: Mario

This is Mascot Week.  All week. I shall be featuring some of my favorite mascots, starting with a very special one.

If you want to see a bunch of mascots, Las Vegas is a great place. While technically, they aren't "official" mascots, they are close enough for the purpose of this site.
Mario is a fictional character, who first appeared in Donkey Kong in 1981. Originally he was unnamed or simply called "jumpman." Later, with a bit of flipflopping, Mario's full name was revealed to be Mario Mario.
Mario has appeared in over 200 video games and the Mario franchise is the best-selling video game franchise of all time. Despite the success, Mario almost didn't come to be.
Shigeru Miyamoto had originally attempted to create a video game featuring Popeye, Olive Oyl and Bluto, but he couldn't obtain the licensing rights.
Mario's apparel colors were created to have a contrast with the rest of the action in Donkey Kong. His large nose and mustache were added to make the small on-screen character appear more human.
In addition to all of the video games, Mario has also spawned a huge merchandise line. Mario might be the most recognizable human video game character. So even though this wasn't the "official" Mario character, I still took the opportunity to pose with him.

Mascot Week Friendly Encounters: Kit Kat and Nancy

Friendly Encounters is a weekly series featuring my friends who have met celebrities. This is a special Mascot Week edition of Friendly Encounters.

My fascination with mascots has been well-documented here. I think that I might have spread that love to my sister or maybe she just does it for me. Either way, I love it.
While on a trip out east, Nancy ran into a giant KitKat bar. I don't know if it is technically a mascot, but it will do for my purposes here and my intrigue remains the same.
Nestle actually introduced an official KitKat bear mascot, but there was a backlash when the public felt it resembled the Pedobear, a bear used to mock pedophiles. Obviously, Nestle was wise to recall the bear mascot. Giant candy bars are safe as mascots, though.
I was never a big fan of the actual KitKat candy bar. I am not much into candy anyway, but a KitKat would be really low on my list if I ranked candy bars.
I do love that KitKat and Nancy looked so happy in the picture. It's the perfect Mascot edition of Friend Encounters.

Mascot Week: Celebrity Jersey Cards #415 Denver Nuggets Rocky & Washington Nationals William Taft

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a regular series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebs wearing sports jerseys. With Mascot Week starting today, this is a special edition Mascot Celebrity Jersey Cards.

The Washington Nationals have the Presidents Race (currently known as known as the GEICO Presidents Race) at home game. Seven presidents have been represented and their jersey number corresponds to their presidential term number. In 2013, William Taft was introduced, but he was retired after the 2016 season. Taft won 46 races during his 4 seasons. "Taft" is the oldest figure ever to be featured on a Celebrity Jersey Card.
Hailing from the Rocky Mountains, Rocky made his debut at a Denver Nuggets game in 1990. Rocky is one of the most popular mascots in all of sports, but he has gotten into a few feuds, most notably against the Los Angeles Lakers and Charles Barkley. Ever the homer, Rocky supported the Broncos during a playoff run by donning a Peyton Manning jersey, thereby earning his Celebrity Jersey Card.

Monica Abbott Loves Johngy's Beat

I first became aware of Monica Abbott when she was a star softball pitcher at the University of Tennessee. Monica appeared in several world championships and the 2008 Olympics. She also joined the NPF (National Pro Fastpitch), eventually making her way to the Chicago Bandits, where I first met her.
Seeing Monica pitch up close in person was quite an experience. Dominating is an understatement. She put amazing movement on her pitches, which she threw with top velocity. She has been clocked at 70 mph, which translated to about 105 mph in basball terms.
Monica was revered by everyone. Unfortunately, I missed her no-hitter and perfect game during her time with the Bandits.
In 2016, Monica signed what is believed to be the richest contract given to a female athlete in team sports, when she joined the Scrapyard Dawgs. I did have the bittersweet pleasure of seeing her pitch a no-hitter against the Bandits that season. Despite my loyalty to the Bandits, I admit it was a thrill to watch in person.
The Dawgs left the NPF and are now a barn-storming team, meaning I don't get to see Monica. I should be able to see her when the Team USA comes to Rosemont in June. It will be great to reconnect with Monica.
Aside from her onfield success, Monica is a real sweetheart off the field. It really has been an hnor covering her and knowing her.
Recently, Monica was kind enough to send a shout out to Johngy's Beat. Getting a positive promo from one of the all-time greatest really made my day. I thank Monica for thr promo and for all she has done over the years.
Check out TeamUSA.org for more info on Monica and Team USA. Also, get ready for the return of softball to the Olympics in 2020. I am sure you'll see Monica working her magic there!

The Big East Women's Basketball Tournament

The Big East Women's Basketball Tournament is coming to Chicago's Wintrust Arena March 9-12 and I will be "On the Beat" as always. I wrote an early preview of the tourney for the Patch at The Big East Women's Basketball Tournament Comes to Chicago. I also wrote several stories on Big East women's basketball for Global Traveler.
I had my first up close look at collegiate women's basketball at last season's tournament. The championship game saw DePaul beat Marquette. As exciting as it was to see my alma mater DePaul win in their home city, that game was only a small part of the excitement of the tourney.
That weekend launched me on a mission to cover and watch more collegiate women's basketball this season. The first step in that goal was Marquette's Media Day last November. I got to meet and talk to the coaches and the players.
Right from Coach Carolyn Kieger's opening statements, you could see Marquette was on a mission this season. She talked of high expectations. She stressed that the seniors needed to lead like last year's seniors. The others needed to step up their game to fill supporting roles. There was a real calm determination to her speech, but there was also the fun element.
She talked about wanting the players to experience all of this. That really hit home with  me, because I always try to soak in my moments. I always try to appreciate the special moments I have, like standing on Marquette's court interviewing this great team.
As of this writing, Marquette is meeting all expectations. Sitting in first place, they were undefeated until dropping a game last week. Still, they remain the team to beat, despite DePaul being the defending champs.
Of course, you can't count out DePaul. They sit in 2nd place and seem to be improving. Coach Doug Bruno isn't ready to concede the league title just yet.
Of course, there are other teams who might have plans for that title, too. The Big East isn't a 2 team league. Butler, Providence, Villanova and the others are all capable of putting a run together.
I am really looking forward to the tourny. It's going to be a weekend of great basketball, elite athletes, drama and entertainment.
You can go to BigEast.com to get all of the latest news and the tourney info. I hope to see Wintrust packed with basketball fans!

Eat, Drink and Be Murray at Murray Bros. Caddyshack

After a day of watching collegiate softball at the Dome in Rosemont, Jim and I chose the nearby Murray Bros. Caddychack for our dining pleasure. I wrote about it for Global Traveler at Eat, Drink and Be Murray.
I had heard about Murray Bros. Caddyshack long before it actually opened late last year. It was highly anticipated by fans of the classic movie and Chicagoans in general, including me.
At last year's Wizard World, Kato Kaelin introduced me to Mike Avella, the GM of Murray Bros. Caddyshack. My interview with him can be found at On the Beat With Mike Avella.
It took me a little too long, but I finally did make it to Murray Bros. Caddyshack and I caught up with Mike. When I asked him about business, he stated, “Business is great only because of the great customers who come in and try us. We’ve been successful because we treat locals like they are locals, and everyone is a VIP.”
More importantly for this hungry reporter, I asked him about the shark tacos on the daily specials list. Mike said they were fantastic and in fact, would be placed on the main menu because of their popularity. That sold me and I always wanted to try shark.
The meal consisted of 3 big soft shell corn tacos filled with chunks of shark meat and jicama, accompanied by a large saucer of refried beans and another saucer of rice. All was delicious. The shark taco was bursting with flavor and textures. The refried beans were excellent, not the usual paste you get elsewhere.
Jimmy got the shrimp. It looked very good and he enjoyed it.
Murray Bros. Caddyshack was a good lunch choice. It isn't really a sports bar, but there are several big screen televisions. There is also a nice amount of Caddyshack memorabilia, without it being overrun by it.
Go to MBCShack.com for more info on Murray Bros. Caddyshack restaurants. If you're ever in the area (Rosemont or Fort Lauderdale), stop in to "Eat, Drink and Be Murray."

HeroTV 2019 Episode 2: Paul Erickson Nerd Parodist

The newest episode of HeroTV 2019 is airing on Comcast. You can also watch it at HeroTV 2019 Episode 2: Paul Erickson Nerd Parodist. PL Myers and I welcome my old friend Paul Erickson into the Comcast studios for a half hour of fun we call an interview.
I have known Paul for many years, having met him on the comic con circuit. I believe Contributor Extraordinaire Matt Parker actually first noticed Paul and asked for an interview. To be honest, noticing Paul at a comic con isn't hard. He is usually dressed as a hobbit. Fortunately for all involved, Paul was casually dressed for the HeroTV interview, but I digress.
At that first meeting, I learned that Paul was a Tolkien parodist, hence the hobbit garb. Paul was promoting The Wobbit A Parody (Of The Hobbit), his parody book obviously based on LOTR. Going the extra mile, Paul manned his booth (shared with fellow author James Finn Garner, the subject of a future HeroTV interview) dressed as a hobbit, engaging all who meandered down the aisle. He certainly engaged us.
That was the start of a friendship which has seen us both grow. No longer "just" a Tolkien parodist, Paul is now the "world's foremost nerd parodist" as he has expanded his parodying to include Star Wars.
I have had the pleasure of interviewing him several times since the first encounter. I am always happy to spread the word on his latest projects. He in turn has included me in a few of his famous panels at comic cons. They truly have been some of the most fun I have had at the cons.
Fast forward to present day and I suggested Paul (and James) to PL for our HeroTV show. Impressed by his body of work, PL immediately agreed. Paul brought his "A" game as he talked to us about how he started writing parodies, comic cons, his influences, dressing as a hobbit, future projects and more.
I am always extra proud when a HeroTV interview is someone I brought to the table. I was happy to give Paul some extra exposure and to add him to our growing list of fascinating interview subjects.
The best interviews always seem like a fun conversation. If you know Paul and have ever talked to him, all conversations are fun and this was no exception.
Watch the interview at the link above. Also, check out Paul's work at NerdParodist.com. If you get the chance, by all means, see him at a comic con, where he is in action at his best!
Thanks to my HeroTV co-host for inviting me to join the legendary show. Thanks to Paul for his time and consideration. Also thanks to Paul for a lot of entertainment, but I am still waiting for that meatball sandwich (inside joke).

Happy Birthday Sam

Today is my niece Sam's birthday. I am sure her husband Kyle and their pooches Timber and Tris are treating her extra special today and I send birthday greetings to her.
Sam is simply the best. She's caring, smart, courageous, adventurous, funny and more, all rolled into a young lady. I am so proud of her and admire her greatly. She is much more in control of her life than I was at her age.
Her wedding was probably the funnest wedding I have ever attended. From the awesome first dance right to the very end, it was just a blast.
Sam is also responsible for me coming out of Marathon retirement (for which I am eternally grateful although mildly annoyed at the residual pain LOL). Running the Marathon with her (or actually a couple hours behind her) was one of the coolest experiences I have ever had.
Happy birthday, Sam! I love you and I hope you have a great day and a fantastic year!

Friend Encounters: Luke Bryan and Brittany Cervantes

Friend Encounters is a weekly series in which I feature friends who have met celebrities.

Brittany Cervantes was a star softball player at the University of Kentucky. She is the only player in the school's history to hit at least 10 home runs in all four seasons and her name is all over the Kentucky record book. After graduation, she spent 5 seasons with the Chicago Bandits, before being traded to the Scrapyard Dawgs. The Dawgs dropped out of the NPF after the 2017 season. She was the NPF Offensive Playor of the Year in 2015 and the Cowles Cup MVP in 2016.
Luke Bryan is one of the most popular musicians. He started mostly as a song writer, before branching out on his own and achieving massive success.
Brittany was attending a Kentucky Wildcats football game, when she ran into Bryan on the sidelines. Bryan was wearing a Georgia hat (the opposition), but that didn't deter Brittany. I guess she forgives him for that transgression.
I miss Brittany in Chicago. She was one of the most popular Bandits and she was always good for a fun interview. She is currently an assistant at Kentucky, where you can follow her at UKAthletics.com. You can also follow Brittany at @Cervantes1127 on twitter.

She has a Master's Degree from Cal Fullerton University and also has a full-time job in the business world. Rohac wears an Anaheim Ducks jersey, along with pants, gloves and skates, for her Celebrity Jersey Card.
Born in Okmulgee, OK, Linda Le rose to stardom as a top cosplayer. She is also a model, artist, internet personality and more. She is also known as Vampy Bit Me or Vampy from her cosplaying. Le earned her Celebrity Jersey Card by repping the San Jose Sharks. The #23 hs been worn most recently by Barclay Goodrow .

Happy Birthday Louie!

Today is Louie's birthday. I'll be sure to call him and wish him a Happy Mike Smrek or Dan Neal or Dustin Byfuglien. Perhaps I need to go outside of Chicago to get a star befitting Louie. How about Mike Webster? It seems 52 isn't a great number in sports, but I am sure it will be for Louie.
The sports uniform number birthday game is something Louie and I have done from the beginning. Back then, I was Bill Buckner (22) and he was Mick Kelleher (20). That's a lot of years and we have done a lot over the years.
We worked literally side-by-side at Lerner for 17 years and now run our own distribution company, along with working for Global Traveler magazine. I couldn't ask for a better work partner or friend.
I have been on a lot of trips with Louie, but last year, we experienced a first. Louie finally joined the Boys of Summer trip with the rest of our buds. It was great to finally have Louie with us (although younger Jason missed this trip...one day, we will all go together).
We learned a lot about Louie on the trip, mostly from the picture below. Who knew Louie had another business? Was this the reason he agreed to join us? I'm sure this brought a big laugh to his wife Effie when We posted it all over Facebook.
Anyway, happy birthday Louie. Enjoy your day my friend!

ABC7's Alan Krashesky and Kathy Brock at Chicago Auto Show 2018

The Chicago Auto Show is here through February 18. Along with the cars and auto-related products, there are lots of local celebrities at the show. Leading up to the CAS, While I am enjoying this year's event, I am recalling some of my favorite moments from last year's show.
ABC7 Eyewitness News staffers made many appearances at last year's CAS. Alan Krashesky and Kathy Brock reunited for one such appearance.
A native of Philadelphia, PA, Krashesky has been with ABC7 since 1982. Currently, he co-anchors the 5pm newscast with Cheryl Burton. Krashesky has co-anchored newscasts that have been consistently ranked #1 in Chicago.
Born in Washington, Brock joined ABC7 in 1990 as a co-anchor of the morning newscast with Krashesky. Over the years, Brock also teamed with Chicago news legends Floyd Kalber and Ron Magers, before rejoining Krashesky in 2016. Brock retired from ABC7 in May, just a few months after the CAS.
It would have been really cool if the ABC7 setup was like a real news desk. The pictures with the newscasters would have looked like a legit broadcast. I guess that is asking a lot though.
Still, it was fun meeting and talking to the various pairs of ABC7 newscasters. These folks have brought the news into our homes for so may years. They are almost like family.
Krashesky and Brock were very popular at the CAS. Fortunately, I had great timing and was able to get to them very early in their appearance. They were very gracious with all fans though, staying ebyond their scheduled slot to meet everyone there.
Go to ChicagoAutoShow.com for more info. You can also follow the Chicago Auto Show on Facebook and the Chicago Auto Show on twitter for updates, scheduling and more info. You can also follow these two at @KrasheskyABC7 and @KathyBrockABC7 on twitter.

Checking In With the DePaul Women's Basketball Team

When I last saw the DePaul women's basketball team, they suffered a frustrating loss to Seton Hall. Having just seen Marquette easily beat this Seton Hall team, it didn't look good for DePaul.
In the post-game media session, DePaul coach Doug Bruno expressed frustration, but not resignation. He credited Seton Hall with a great effort and acknowledged Marquette as the team to beat in the Big East. Bruno went on to say that DePaul needed to find it within themselves to get back on track and in the Big East race.
Last Sunday, I saw DePaul dig very deep and show lots of heart, despite losing to Marquette at home. It was a very different Bruno in this post-game session. The frustration was replaced with excitement and pride. This is the team that won the Big East title last year. This is the team that could win it again this year.
My coverage also appears on the Patch at DePaul Women's Basketball Team Shows Heart in Loss. Today though, I want to talk about the heart I saw from DePaul.
While they lost to Marquette, they showed plenty of talent and guts. Every time Marquette seemed on the verge of putting away the game, DePaul came back, chipping away at the lead. DePaul actually tied the game with about 2 minutes left. In the end, Marquette was just a bit better and secured a 93-87 victory.
Marquette coach Carolyn Kieger preceded Bruno in the post-game media session. She was quick to praise DePaul's effort. She knew that despite the win, her team faced a big challenge. Fortunately for the Golden Eagles, last year's Big East Player of the Year Allazia Blockton returned from an injury which saw her miss several games. The first place Golden Eagles just got a bit better.
Marquette (11-0) is still undefeated in 1st place in the Big East. DePaul (7-4) sits in 3rd place, .5 games behind 2nd place Butler. DePaul is in for a tough challenge in their quest to repeat as Big East champs, but Sunday's game certainly was encouraging.
Speaking of the Big East championship tournament, it will once again be held at Wintrust Arena March 9-12. I went to last season's Big East tournament as something interesting to cover. Of course, I got interesting stuff for stories, but I really loved the action. I decided to do more coverage this season. These young women are elite athletes and the action is basketball at its best. I am really looking forward to this year's Big East tournament.
You can get more info on the Big East tournament at Big East Championship Central. I'll be there "On the Beat" and reporting as always.

Happy Birthday Jason Fleigel

Today is my longtime friend Jason Fleigel's birthday. I'm sure he is celebrating with his wife and 2 youngsters, but I will salute him from here.
I first met Jason back in 1995, when he started as a telemarketer for Lerner Newspapers. The telemarketing job didn't work out well, but he became far more valuable to Lerner. More importantly, he became one of my dearest friends.
Some people called him "the angry one" or "the little ball of hate" and I really couldn't disagree (especially since I called him that). He definitely added some life and energy into the company. Despite sometimes lacking tact, Jason always was willing to help anyone.
Our work relationship lasted about 5 years, but our friendship has passed 23 years (and I have the gray hair to prove it). We have had great roadtrips, been to many comic cons, shared many laughs, gotten through some hard times and all the other things that friends do. I was so proud to be one of his groomsmen at his wedding, too.
JayHawk is married with 2 kids and living in the western suburbs. I don't get to see him as often as I would like, but time and distance doesn't matter. He is still my little brother and I couldn't be happier that he has found such happiness with his family.
Happy birthday, Jason. Enjoy your day with your beautiful, loving family. You deserve it all, my friend.

Friend Encounters: Tiny Lister, Heather Owens and Ed Gonzales

Friend Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

Ed Gonzales and Heather Owens are two of my favorite people from the wrestling world and the convention world. Yes, they have to deal with me in both places.
I first met Heather when she was wrestling at Resistance Pro. Hardcore Heather always gave a great match and she was such a sweetheart outside of the ring. Of course, she was also quite capable of a quick verbal (or physical) jab in or out of the ring.
Soon after, I met her husband Ed at a Days of the Dead event. Ed and Heather were part of the inner core at DotD. The duo was heavily involved in the wrestling aspect of Days, usually handling the wrestling guests and moderating the wrestling panels. Hardworking and fun-loving, these two were always one of the highlights.
At the last DotD in Chicago, they got a picture with actor Tom "Tiny" Lister, who also has a strong connection to the wrestling world. Among his many roles, Lister stayed as Zeus opposite of Hulk Hogan in No Holds Barred. That led to a few stints in pro wrestling. Most of his wrestling played off of his movie with Hogan, but he has carved a legitimate acting career.
One bit of trivia concerning Lister is that he is blind in his right eye. This makes his time in the ring more impressive. In a performance that relies on timing and ring presence, having half a field of vision makes it extremely challenging to hit certain spots.
I should also note that he is a big guy. Standing a legit 6'5", he towers over most of us, including Ed and Heather. Ed and Heather aren't short, it just looks that way in the photo below.
Prior to the last Days event, Ed and Heather announced they were leaving the Days con, along with a few others, including co-founder Adolfo. My reporter sense tells me something else is in the works. To guess it would involve wrestling would not be a huge leap, but I do not have any concrete information on that, just a guess from Magic JohngyBall.
Days will live on, but I will miss seeing these two at fture events. They can't escape me forever though. If there is another event on the horizon, you know I'll be "On the Beat" there, catching up with my old friends and creating new memories.
Go to DaysoftheDead.com or the Days of the Dead Facebook page for more info on this great convention. The next event is May 3-5 in Charlotte, NC.

On the Beat With Adam Carolla at the 2019 Chicago Auto Show

Thursday was Media Preview Day at the 2019 Chicago Auto Show. It gives the media a chance to roam the show floor without the usual crowds. I always love this day, but this one got even better when I received an invitation to interview Adam Carolla, who was appearing courtesy of Castrol EDGE.
A noted car enthusiast, owner and racer, Carolla is one of the stars appearing in Castrol EDGE's Live on the Edge film series. The promotional campaign and video series features various celebrities seeking exhilarating activities. Carolla's video shows him in an Audi R8 V10 Quattro on a rain-soaked track. It's a cool video and after talking to Carolla and feeling his passion, it took on an even bigger meaning.
I have been a fan of Adam for years. Having enjoyed his work on Loveline, The Man Show, The Adam Carolla podcast, his appearances on Howard Stern and more, I was really excited about talking to Adam. I have done more than 1,000 interviews, but I actually found myself nervous about this one the night before.
I admit at times I can be a fanboy, but I make no apologies. I think that is one of my strengths in fact. I am not jaded. This is all fun for me and I want it to be fun for the interview subject and the viewer.
The media reps handling this were extremely professional in their communications. I arrived at 2:15 (always early) and they greeted me, telling me Adam was on his way. Adam showed up shortly after and we sat down for the interview.
I knew Adam was there to promote Castrol and I started the interview with that. Get done with business first.
Knowing Adam owns more than 20 race cars, I then asked him about the favorite car he owns and his dream car to own. We moved on to his favorite getaway spot and an ideal destination spot. I asked him about his World Record setting podcast.
I finished by asking him about throwing out the first pitch at a ball game. That might sound like an odd question, but Adam was a pretty good ball player in his youth. He is also friends with Jimmy Kimmel and the folks at the Howard Stern Show. Stern's producer Gary Dell'Abate famously threw a terrible first pitch, which has become comedic fodder for the show. I wanted to hear what Adam had to say about his approach to tossing the pitch. To his credit, Adam gave a very good answer.
I could have talked to Adam for much longer, but there were plenty of others waiting for their time, so I thanked Adam and ended the interview. Adam was very friendly and cool on and off camera. It was a great experience.
I really appreciate Adam for his time and consideration. I thank the Chicago Auto Show for the hospitality and facilitating the interview. I thank Castrol for bringing in Adam. Lastly, I thank the media reps at the Chicago Auto Show for all they did.
The Chicago Auto Show runs through Monday, February 18. There is plenty of fun still to be had and I will be back there several times. My coverage also appears on Global Traveler at Adam Carolla at the 2019 Chicago Auto Show and on the Patch at Adam Carolla and the 2019 Chicago Auto Show.

Bobby Hull at Chicago Auto Show 2018

The Chicago Auto Show is here. Starting today and running through February 18, the CAS will fill McCormick Place with vehicles, auto products and celebrities. Leading up to that great event, I am presenting some of my favorite moments from last year's CAS.
Chicaho Blackhawks Hall of Famer Bobby Hull is always a popular guest wherever he goes. The CAS 2018 was no exception, as fans started lining up several hours prior to his scheduled appearance time.
Hull was in his usual happy mood. He seems to really enjoy meeting fans. I think Hull is happy to be embraced again by the Blackhawks organization and the fanbase. It was a bit of a rocky road at times, but all seems to be good between Hull and the Hawks.
The Hawks famously lost Hull to the WHA's Winnipeg Jets. Then when the WHA merged with the NHL the Hawks missed the chance to welcome him back to the team. Finally, the Hawks did not bring Bobby's son Brett to Chicago when they had the opportunity. Despite the three strikes, Hull and the Hawks eventually did patch up the relationship and things have gone good since.
Legends like Hull need to be a part of the organization. I think the legends need it as much as the teams do. I certainly know the fans want it, as witnessed every time I see Hull at any of his appearances.
The celebrity lineup has not yet been announced for this year's CAS, buty you can go to ChicagoAutoShow.com for more info. You can also follow the Chicago Auto Show on Facebook and the Chicago Auto Show on twitter for updates, scheduling and more info.

ABC7's Roz Varon at the Chicago Auto Show 2018

The Chicago Auto Show runs February 9-18 at Chicago's McCormick Place and I will be "On the Beat" as usual. Since vehicles are not the only part of the auto show, I am featuring some of my favorite celebrities from last year's show.
ABC TV Chicago's Roz Varon was one of the people I most wanted to meet. I had previously worked with Roz on a few different projects in my past life at Lerner Newspapers, but we never actually met. I wrote about one of those projects at Roz Varon Salutes Literacy.
Roz was one of the many celebrity spokespeople for a ad series I ran promoting literacy. Roz graciously accepted my request and her ad was one of the most popular in the series.
Roz's battle with cancer is widely known and her courage and strength has served as an inspiration for all. I witnessed some of this as I approached her at the CAS. Several woman were talking to Roz about their similar battles. The love seen was powerful and almost overwhelming. Roz was very loving with them, giving them warm hugs before moving on.
My meeting with Roz was far less serious, but she gave me her time and consideration, just the same. I presented her with another copy of her ad from way back just to remind her. Of course, she remembered and thanked me for including her. We talked for a few minutes before the line of fans forced me to end our chat.
Thank you to Roz Varon for her time, for being so sweet and for serving as an example of grace, strength and perseverance in the awful battle against cancer. Thank you to the fine folks at the CAS for the hospitality.

All Choked Up With Mad Man Pondo and Khloe

Of the hundreds of wrestlers I have met over the years, Mad Man Pondo might be the most surprising to me. As I have previously written, his reputation preceded him to Resistance Pro Wrestling. He was blood, gore and all hardcore. Of course, I knew that was his wrestling persona, but researching him didn't change that image. I knew he appeared in movies, videos, video games and other forms of entertainment and obviously had a life outside of wrestling, but still he had a mad man mystique.
He certainly lived up to that image when I met him at RPro, but I also began seeing another side of Pondo. I saw a veteran of many years of wrestling, who knew the business in and out of the ring and who wanted to help in both areas. While I didn't expect some sort of savage, I also didn't expect him to be so hands-on caring about the talent and the product.
The helper I saw was very gracious, offering bits to anyone and giving a lot more if requested. Pondo never pushed his agenda or his way. Instead, he helped everyone with their role. I honestly can't recall seeing anyone give this much and so quietly.
Wrestling can be a very competitive business. Egos and politics are everywhere, but Pondo slices through it all without ruffling feathers. He's just Pondo and The Resistance is lucky to have him.
Pondo will certainly be on hand this Saturday, when The Resistance returns with Chapter V: New Jack City. You can go to LiveDieResist.org or follow LiveDieResist on Facebook for more info.
At the last show of The Resistance, Tommy Else and I interviewed Pondo and Khloe for The "Or Else" Podcast. Our interview is on YouTube at The "Or Else" Podcast: Mad Man Pondo and Khloe. Pondo talks about his career, hardcore matches, helping out and much more. Khloe also dicusses her start, teaming with Pondo and more.
Of course, Pondo also talked about Memoirs of a Mad Man, his recently released book. I picked up my copy that night and got it signed by Pondo, who included a little Mad Man sketch. I highly recommend Memoirs of a Mad Man, available on Amazon. You can also pick up a signed copy of his book Saturday at Chapter V: New Jack City.

On the Beat With Roosevelt University Softball Coach Aaron Moore

Last weekend, I had the pleasure of soaking in some softball action in the Dome at Roosevelt courtesy of Roosevelt University softball coach Aaron Moore. It gave me a chance to catch up with Aaron, who I knew from his time as the General Manger of the Chicago Bandits.
During his time with the Bandits, Aaron oversaw a team that won 3 National Pro Fastpitch titles. Aaron had a great eye for talent, whether drafting a player r signing a free agent. On a personal level, I always appreciated Aaron for his time and consideration while I covered the team.
When the ownership changed, Aaron left the Bandits and found a new home at Roosevelt University. Aaron brought his resume of success with him. He has more than 450 coaching wins at various levels. After guiding the Lakers to 2 double digit win seasons, Aaron enters his this season looking for more success.
Midday Friday, I sat down with Aaron and asked him about his time with the Bandits, recruiting at Roosevelt, winning versus teaching and a lot more. His passion for the sport is palpable and impressive. I love talking softball with him and could have gone another hour or more, but he did have some coaching to do.
After watching the interview, head over to RooseveltLakers.com to learn more about the team and the university. Also, check out their schedule and get out to a game. The Ballpark in Rosemont is a great place to watch softball. Come out and cheer the black and green. Go Lakers!
Thank you to Roosevelt University and Coach Moore for the hospitality, time and consideration. I look forward to catching up with the Lakers during the season.

Friend Encounters: Paul Sorvino and Troy Babbs

Friend Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

Troy Babbs is part of my convention family. I believe I first met him at Days of the Dead, but I know we crossed paths at other events, too. Last year at C2E2, Troy joined the Johngy's Beat crew and was a major help.
The partners of Days fo the Dead split up after the last show in 2018. Unfortunately, several of the Days volunteer crew decided to end their Days run, too. Troy was one of those departing. I am pretty sure ther things are in the works, but for now, I am sad I will not see friends like Troy at future Days events.
Troy is one of the most positive and nicest people I know. He volunteered to help me at C2E2, even though he had no real interest in the actual show. He helped just because he is such a giving person.
As a volunteer at Days, he has the opportunity to meet a lot of celebrities. Honestly, Troy gets more pictures with other friends and attendees at Days than he gets with the celebs. He just likes having a good time and making others around him have fun.
Paul Sorvino has had a legendary career. His lengthy resume includes Goodfellas, truly a classic film. He recently started doing some conventions and his prices are very reasonable, especially for an entertainer of his stature.
Of course, Troy got a picture with the famous actor (or maybe Sorvino got a picture with Troy). I always try to get a picture with Troy, although sometimes he has ben too much fo a blur to stop for a selfie. I must note that I did get a picture with Troy at he latest Days, but I did not meet Sorvino, because I had met him earlier last year at another comic con.
I'll miss Troy at Days, but I hope to see him at other events. Just because people leave a convention shouldn't mean they leave your life. It might take a little extra effort, but good friends are worth it.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #412 Danny Trejo & Ashley Alexiss

This is a regular series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebrities wearing sports jerseys. Today, we salute the Super Bowl teams.

Born in Los Angeles, CA, Danny Trejo overcame a troubled past to become a star. His first acting break came when he was on the Runaway Train set working as a youth drug counselor. He was offered a part and his career was started. "Machete" stayed true to his LA roots and donned a Rams jersey for his Celebrity Jersey Card. I'm guessing Trejo is old school and it is a Lawrence McCutcheon jersey.
Ashley Alexiss was born in Boston, MA and rose to fame as a plus sized model. Along with modeling, she also started a line of swimwear, which promises to be supportive, yet stylish. Alexiss is repping her hometown Patriots and the legendary Tom Brady for her Celebrity Jersey Card.

Sherhara Downing at Chicago Auto Show 2018

The Chicago Auto Show is coming February 9-18. While looking ahead to this year's show, I am recalling some of the fun from last year's CAS.
Sherhara Downing was moderating some events at CAS. Downing's twitter page lists her as a communicator, social self curator and gab guru. I love the "Gab guru" description. Through her work at Level Comm, she trains corporate professionals how to communicate, collaborate and connect.
I had to get a picture with Downing. As my friend Chuck would say, "We're all professionals here." Downing was very pleasant and we chatted briefly, before she got back to her hectic schedule.
Go to ChicagoAutoShow.com for more info. You can also follow the Chicago Auto Show on Facebook and the Chicago Auto Show on twitter for updates, scheduling and more info. You can get more info on her at Sherhara.com and follow her at @Sherhara on twitter.

Tristen Edwards of the Nebraska Huskers

Twin sisters Tatum and Taylor Edwards were softball stars at the University of Nebraska, before they joined the pro ranks with National Pro Fastpitch. Both eventually joined the Chicago Bandits, where they were a big part of championships in 2015 and 2016. They were two of my favorite players.
Taylor was traded to the Scrap Yard Dawgs after the 2016 season and still plays for them, although they are no longer part of the NPF. Tatum retired after the 2016 season and recently returned to Nebraska as an assistant coach of the softball team.
While covering the Northwestern Wildcats softball team, I met a third Edwards sister. Tristen is a star shortstop at Nebraska. When the 2019 season begins, Tristen will be a third year player.
The bonds of love and mutual respect between the sisters is evident, although naturally, Tristen wants to create her own legacy. She is well on her way to doing just that, establishing herself as a legit 5 tool player.
In 2016, she hit .281 with 4 homers and 25 rbi's. Last season, she improved to .356, with 12 homers and 43 rbi's. I can't wait to see what she does this season.
Tristen definitely has a future in pro softball if she chooses to continue. I'd love to see her on the Bandits someday. I have already set a goal of interviewing her in 2019, to complete my Edwards triple play of sorts.
For more info on Nebraska softball, head to Huskers Softball. Of course, I'll be following her career and will be reporting here, too!
