On the Beat With Erika Piancastelli

Earlier this week, I interviewed softball player Erika Piancastelli of Athletes Unlimited Softball, the Italian National Team (and the Olympics) and the Japanese League. Urka discussed all of this and a lot more at On the Beat With Erika Piancastelli on the Johngy's Beat YouTube channel.
Born in Moderna, Italy, Erika played softball from an early age. With a father who played baseball and a mother who played softball in the Olympics, it seemed natural for Erika to play ball, but she didn't get realy serious about it until she played at McNeese State University.
It was at McNeese when Erika started thinking she could make a career out of the sport she loved. While at McNeese, in 235 games over four seasons, Erika hit .401 with 75 homers, 212 RBI's and 228 runs scored, the last three being career records for McNeese. She also ranks first in walks, doubles and total bases. Among her many awards and accolades, she was named Southland Conference Hitter and Player of the Year four times.
Erika has played three seasons with AU Pro Softball and will be returning for the 2023 season in August. In 2020, she finished in 4th, followed by 23rd in 2021 and 15th in 2022. Unfortunately, Erika will not play in AUX, the short season beginning in June, because she will be playing in Japan.
She will be leaving soon for the Japanese League season. She talked about the the style of play in Japan and adjusting to the different styles among the various leagues where she has played.
She talked about playing different positions, including which she preferred. Last season at AU, Erika played a lot of right field and she played it well. I asked her about a particular throw she made to nail a runner at third. My buddy Tony and I agree it might be the best throw we have seen on any level of ball. It was a perfect laser beam of a throw. We knew she was a star catcher, but we quickly realized she was just as good in the outfield or probably anywhere else.
Erika updated me on the latest news about RISR. Made for fastpitch players, RISR offers training content, advice and more from its instructors. Erika, Amanda Chidester, Haylie McCleney and Janie Reed certainly have the resumes to be great teachers, but it is their hands-on, relatable approach that makes RISR so special.
Lastly, we talked about Erika's new website. Of course, softball fans can always buy AU apparel to support Erika and other players, but diehard player fans always like to rep gear unique to their favorite players. As I promised Erika, I will be sporting her shirts this summer at AU. I love the logo designed by her sister. Before I let her go, I also got the origins of “Urka.”We wrapped up with a mutual expression of anticipation for the AU season. I am not sure who looks forward to it more, Erika and her teammates or the fans. I know I can't wait.
I thank Erika for her time and consideration with this interview and always. Erika is really an elite player and person. I encourage all to check her site at UrkaAthletics.com.

Princess Etch at C2E2 2020

With C2E2 starts today and runs all weekend, I am recalling some of the interesting folks I met at previous C2E2 events. Princess Etch is one of the most unique artists.
Princess Etch (aka Jane Labowitch) creates her art using Etch-A-Sketch. When I first saw she would be at C2E2 several years ago, I immediately requested an interview. Since then, I have gotten a couple updates over the years. The last time we spoke was in 2020, when Johngy's Beat Contributor Joey Roth handled the interview duties masterfully. Watch our interview at On the Beat With Princess Etch.
She talked about starting her specialized art, the challenges, time and cost of using Etch A Sketch and much more, including giving a few helpful hints to others who might want to try it.
Because Jane moved away since then, I don't expect to see her at C2E2 2023. She's still active and producing her cool art though.
Plenty of other fantastically talented creative folks will be there, along with all sorts of celebrities. It promises to be another great event and I will be "On the Beat" as usual/
Check out her work at PrincessEtch.com. Also, check C2E2.com for info and updates and back here for my recurring coverage.

On the Beat With Kayden Phoenix

Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo starts Friday and runs through Sunday. It will be loaded with celebrities and creators of all sorts. Yesterday, I had the pleasure of interviewing Kayden Phoenix, one of the creators I most want to meet. That interview is on the Johngy's Beat YouTube channel at On the Beat With Kayden Phoenix.

Kayden discussed her start in the entertainment business. Seeing a need, Kayden created the first Latina SuperHeroes team, sending her career into another direction. It takes a strong and talented person to see a void and fill it. Talking to Kayden, it quickly becomes apparent how creative and stong-willed she is.

The Latina SuperHeroes team consists fo five characters, each having distint origins and abilities. Kayden discusses each with such passion. You can tell this isn't just a business endeavor. This is something with deep meaning for Kayden.

Kayden talks about all of this and more. She discusses her current and future projects, creating characters not seen in the comic books, carrying the banner for empowerment and of course, her upcoming appearance at C2E2.

My biggest takeaway was her passion, commitment and drive. I was so impressed with her spirit. Obviously, she is a talented person, but it is awesome to see her put her talents into such a unique direction. It might have been easier to take a more common route. I am sure Kayden would have success with whatever she created. Kayden took the unpaved road and created SuperHeroes for young Latinas.

Although they are Latina SuperHeroes, their appeal goes beyond just young Latinas. The stories are well-written and beautifully drawn. Kayden tackles serious issues with humor and heart. There are life lessons and good versus evil stories. All are entertaining no matter the age, gender or nationality of the reader.

Kayden will be at C2E2, meeting fans and promoting her projects. For more info on C2E2, go to C2E2.com. If you can't make it there or juts to learn more about Kayden, go to LatinaSuperHeroes.com.

The Johngy "OR ELSE" Podcast - Ep. 58: "Cindy Fee"

This weekend, my podcast partner Tommy Else and I will be immersed in the world of “The Golden Girls.” After months of anticipation, Golden-Con will be here!

Presented by Golden Fandom, LLC, Golden-Con 2023: Thank You For Being A Fan returns March 31-April 2 at the Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk. Hardcore fans and friends Zack Hudson and brothers Brad and Brendan Balof debuted Golden-Con in 2022 as a weekend celebration of "The Golden Girls," the beloved television sitcom that is still popular more than 30 years after its original run. Golden-Con is a three-day weekend with special guests, live performances, cosplay, merchandise and, of course, lots of cheesecake!

This year, Golden-Con will have writers, producers, and directors from every season of the show, including spinoff, "The Golden Palace." Some of the special guests include David Leisure,, who played neighbor Charley, Dinah Manoff and Kristy McNichol from the “Empty Nest” spinoff, director and producer Terry Hughes and Cindy Fee, who sang the theme song.

Chicago-area resident Cindy's version of "Thank You For Being a Friend” has become so iconic, people forget Andrew Gold, the writer and original singer. Gold's version reached No. 25 on the Billboard Top 100 chart of 1978.

Tommy and I had the pleasure of interviewing Cindy about her impressive career. Fee discussed her start, being a session musician, jingles, her versatility, being on the road and much more. That interview is on our YouTube channel at The Johngy "OR ELSE" Podcast - Ep. 58: "Cindy Fee."

Embracing her connection to the legendary sitcom, she is excited about returning to Golden-Con. Cindy will be meeting fans, discussing the show and her career and of course, performing “Thank You For Being a Friend,” along with some of her original tunes.

Cindy was such a positive and fun person. We were already excited about Golden-Con and talking to Cindy made us even more excited.

There will also be live performances of "The Lost Episodes," a parody show from Hell in a Handbag productions, a Mother of a Solid Gold Dancer Disco Dance Party, a "Biggest Gift" Vendors Market, the "Chicago: You’ve Got Style" costume parade and much more.

Golden-Con runs March 31-April 2 at the beautiful Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk at 301 E. North Water Street. The hours are Friday (1 p.m.-9 p.m.) and Saturday and Sunday (10 a.m.-7 p.m.). Tommy and I will be there covering all aspects, meeting new folks and seeing other friends.

Thank you to Cindy for her time and consideration. For more info, go to ThankYouForBeingAFan.com.

Thank you for being a reader and thank you for being a friend.

Mike Pankow at C2E2 2020

I have known Mike Pankow for many years. Our paths crossed at comic cons and wrestling events.
Right before the pandemic, our paths merged at C2E2, when I assisted Mike with a few interviews he conducted with wrestlers. I was glad to help him and it was interesting to work video while someone else did the interview for another site.
Mike's site is Windy City Slam. He focuses on the Chicago wrestling scene, but also covers all wrestling. Ever versatile, Mike sometimes serves as a photog for various wrestling companies. In short, he is a fixture around wrestling rings in Chicago.
Mike does great work and works hard at it. He's a great guy, too. I applaud his success and always like seeing him at events.
Check WindyCitySlam.com to see all of his work and to keep updated on wrestling news. Also, check C2E2.com for all the info.

Friend Encounters: Billy Ray Cyrus and Larry Freda

Friend Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

Larry Freda has become a more frequent part of Friend Encounters as I realize just how many celebrities he has met. I haven't had the pleasure of meeting Larry in person yet, but I feel I know him already through all of his social posts.

Thanks to his Achy Breaky Heart, Billy Ray Cyrus became a big star many years ago. Little did anyone know as big as that song made him, his daughter Miley would later reach superstardom, too.

Billy actually had eight Top Ten singles on the Billboard Country Songs chart. His album Some Gave All spent 17 weeks in the number one position on the Billboard 200. That is the longest streak for a debut artist at number one.

Billy has remained active in music and also acting. Daughter Miley, kind of did that in reverse. She gained stardom as the title character on Disney TV's Hannah Montana, which led to her singing success.

I don't know if Larry has any musical talent, but I know he has met many talented musicians and other celebrities. While he is most often seen with athletes (usually New York legends), he also crosses over into other fields, too. The man is a legend himself and one who I hope to meet someday.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #628 Rachael Ellering & Britt Baker

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a weekly series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebrities wearing sports jerseys. With WrestleMania coming April 2-3, I feature some wrestlers.

Rachael Ellering is the daughter of Paul, who was the manager of the legendary Road Warriors tag team. Ellering is among the very best independent wrestlers. Why she is not signed to one of the big companies is a mystery to me. Ellering is a noted sports fan, often wearing jerseys, including WNBA jerseys. Today, I feature her repping the Phoenix Suns to earn her Celebrity Jersey Card. The #3 was most notably worn by Chris Paul.
Dr. Britt Baker is not a gimmick, but rather her other life title. Bakers is a legit dentist, when she isn't knocking out teeth in the ring. She is a native of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania and I would take her over that groundhog any day. Baker has won the All Elite Wrestling Women's championship multiple times and is one of the best in the world. Baker earned her Celebrity Jersey Card while repping her home state Pittsburgh Penguins. The #87 was worn by HOFer Sydney Crosby, but I'd take Baker over him, too.

Alex Campbell at C2E2 2017

Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo is coming March 31-April 2. As always, I will be "On the Beat" meeting celebs and creators of all sorts.
One of the things I really love is seeing an artist for the first time, even if they have previously been in Artist Alley. There are so many creators in Artist Alley, it is easy to miss a few.
In any case, I was happy to meet Alex Campbell at C2E2 2017. Alex creates digital illustration, comics, prints, and original art. Based "somewhere in Iowa," Alex graduated from Iowa State University before embarking on his career.
Like a lot of artists, Alex did some drawing right at his booth at C2E2. I could watch that stuff for hours. I find it fascinating to see the process and the final awesome product. Alex illusrated sketch covers while there.
Check his work at Alex Campbell Illustration on Facebook. Also, go to C2E2.com for updates and schedules.

Peyton Pepkowski and Loyola Ramblers

Women's college softball is starting. Once again, I will be covering the Loyola Ramblers.
Pitcher Peyton Pepkowski finished her first season with a solid record of 12-13 and a 2.85 ERA, with 15 complete games and 166 strikeouts and 48 walks. That's even better looking when you see she pitched for a team that finished 17-30. With better run support, Pepkowski could have easily won 18-20 games.
Last season, I had the pleasure of interviewing Pepkowski about her first season. I also spoke with Loyola Head Coach Alicia Abbott. Those interviews can be found at On the Beat With Loyola Softball.
I can't wait until the Ramblers home opener Saturday, March 25. It will be great to be back watching softball.
Go to LoyolaRamblers.com for more info. Also, check here and EveryDayFan.com for my recurring coverage.

On the Beat With Jim Millspaugh of Wrestle Horror

The Squared Circle Expo returns April 7-8 to Indianapolis, Indiana. It will be include a wrestler guest lineup of more than 50 legends and stars, two nights of wrestling, Q&A's, panels, vendors and more. One of the vendors is Jim Millspaugh of Wrestle Horror.

I have seen Jim at both of the previous SCX events, but haven't had the chance to really chat with him and learn about his career. That changed yesterday, as I had the pleasure of talking to Jim during our Zoom interview, which can be found at On the Beat With Jim Millspaugh on YouTube.

Jim has an interesting story, getting involved in the world of pro wrestling at a relatively late age. He admits he was too old to actually wrestle, but age isn't an issue for him as a ring announcer, commentator, podcaster and more. Jim and I bonded over entering pro wrestling from different angles, yet still being a part of the squared circle.

In our interview, Jim covered his path to wrestling and all of his projects. He co-hosts Wrestle Horror with Donnie Hoover. He discussed the crossover of horror and wrestling, including their interviews with wrestlers. Jim also revealed what attendees can expect at his booth at SCX and what wrestlers he really wanted to meet.

Fans have a lot of wrestlers to meet at SCX. That list includes Hall of Famer and Olympic Gold Medal winner Kurt Angle, All Elite Wrestling's MJF, WWE legend Tatanka, podcasters and current stars Matt Cardona and Brian Myers, AEW's Jamie Hayter, WWE Hall of Famer “Big Sexy” Kevin Nash, Heath, Rhyno, current SCX champ Jake Omen, WWE Hall of Famer Lisa Marie Varon, WWE legends Tugboat/Typhoon and Brutus “The Barber” Beefcake, multi-time WWE and TNA/Impact Women's champ Mickie James, multi-time NWA champ Nick Aldis and ECW stars Al Snow, Sandman, Shane Douglas, “The Queen of Extreme” Francine and the bWo's Blue Meanie and Nova, WWF Hall of Famer Tito Santana, Christian, Kevin Sullivan, Evil Uno, AEW's Toni Storm, NJPW's Juice Robinson, WWE HOFer Sgt. Slaughter, AEW's Willow Nightingale, Red Velvet, Dvon Dudley, SoCal Val, Impact's Ace Austin, Impact's Crazzy Steve, PG-13 (J.C. Ice and Wolfie D), Shark Boy, Athena, Danhausen, Deonna Purrazzo, Steve Maclin, the Hex, Fred Rosser, Ethan Page, Madman Fulton and Funaki.

That's 50 great wrestlers of the past and present from several copanies. I think that list is final, but you never know with the promoters of SCX. There still could be a surprise or two.

New this year is Friday night wrestling, which joins the usual Saturday night fights to make two great evenings of action.

Some of the wrestling matches are:

  • Nick Aldis vs. Carson Drake
  • The Headbangers vs. Nick Culer and Sgt. Ledbetter
  • The Inaugural SCX Women's Championship “Hateful 8 Scramble”
  • Lord Crewe vs. Ace Austin
  • Brian Pillman Jr. & Kal Herro vs. Savion & Prima Donny
  • Crazzy Steve & Carlito vs. Matt Taylor & Hooks
  • Rhyno & Heath vs. Soul Shooters vs. Jack Vaughn & Tim Lutz
  • Jake Omen vs. Matt Cardona

All of this happens at Wyndham Indianapolis West. It's a fantastic two days and you never have to leave the property. With an extensive menu, on site restaurant Nicolino's is an excellent option for all meals.

After about a year of anticipation, SCX III will be here in 17 days. I will be joined “On the Beat” by Tony Feddeler, as we cover all ends of the fantastic event. Check back here for my coverage.

For more info on SCX go to SquaredCircleX.com. Also, check WrestleHorror.com for more info on Jim and his projects.

The Johngy "OR ELSE"Podcast - Ep. 57: Sassy Stephie

Sassy Stephie is returning to the wrestling ring after five years away. The interview my podcast partner Tommy Else and I did with Stephie is at The Johngy "OR ELSE" Podcast - Ep. 57: "Sassy Stephie" on YouTube.

From Akron, Ohio, Stephie entered the world of professional wrestling filling in as a ring announcer in 2005. Her experience as a deejay paid off as she soon became the regular announcer.Soon, she started training and made her wrestling debut for Ohio Championship Wrestling in 2007.

During her career, Stephie also wrestled for Shimmer, Women Superstars Uncensored, Chikara, Ring of Honor, Shine and other independent companies. She won several titles and awards along the way, including being ranked No. 36 on the Pro Wrestling Illustrated Female 50 in 2013.

Tommy and I first saw Stephie when she made her debut for Resistance Pro Wrestling in late 2011. We quickly became fans of hers in and out of the ring. Tommy shared a lockerroom with Stephie, while I had the pleasure of interviewing her several times.

Stephie wrestled several matched for RPro, while continuing to wrestle for many other companies. He last match was in 2018. That's going to change very soon.

At Wrestle Jam Weekend on April 1-2, Stephie will step back into the ring for the first time in five years as she takes on Vanessa Kraven. The event will be held at Le Chateau Royal in Laval, Quebec. There will be wrestling, live music, a costume contest, trivia and more.

Stephie talked about all of this, including why she originally retired and why she is returning. She discussed who she wanted to face (spoiler alert...It's Kraven). She also talked about future matches and really enjoying this future run. Lastly, I had to get Stephie's thoughts on her beloved Cleveland Browns. A Canadian resident for several years, Stephie hasn't abandoned her Browns. She has gained a bit of the Canadian accent, as Tommy pointed out.

Stephie looked ready to rumble. She was in great spirits and seems to be at a fantastic place as she now can pick her spots and soak it in, also sharing it with her husband and two young children. Of course, two podcasters from the Chicago area will also be enjoying this run of the Sassy One!

Chrissie Zullo at C2E2 2019

C2E2 2023 returns March 31-April 3. Once again, I will be "On the Beat" meeting celebrities and creators of all sorts.
One of the first artists I ever met was Chrissie Zullo. Born in Canada, Chrissie moved around a bit in her childhood. An editor discovered Chrissie at the DC Talent Search at San Diego Comic Con 2008. She describes her style as "flowy, dreamy, and whimsical."
Chrissie has illustrated variant covers, posters and more. Her art has also been used to create DC vinyl figures.
Like a lot of creators in Artist Alley at C2E2, Chrissie does some illustrating at her booth. I could watch her draw all day, but I wouldn't want to clog her booth traffic. Still, I always manage to watch for several minutes. Watching a talented artist like Chrissie is simply magical to me.
For more info on Chrissie, follow her on social media and also go to Chrissie's Deviant Art page. Also, go to C2E2.com for info and schedules.

Friend Encounters: Ketchup and Kacy Standohar

Friend Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends meeting celebrities.

I met Kacy Standohar several years ago when she was the in-game host for the National Pro Fastpitch Chicago Bandits. Since then, I have seen Kacy at many other sports events, both pro and college. It's always great running into her or working the same event.

An Ohio native, Kacy is now an adopted Chicagoan (although I thinks she still has some Ohio sports fandom in her, but that's understandable). She is totally Chicago though, supprting and covering all local teams.

I don't see any one having more fun or working harder than Kacy. She makes it fun for viewers and co-workers.

Last year, while working at the Chicago Dogs games, Kacy took a selfie with Ketchup, the underrated secondary mascot to Squeeze (because Chicago dogs don't have ketchup). Look at those smiles. I think Kacy's is even bigger than Ketchup's!

Kacy also works on CHGO, a great Chicago sports site. How this woman has the energy is beyond me, but her enthusiasm is contagious.

The Chicago Dogs open their season May 12. I don't know if Kacy will be there, but I hope to see her sometime this season.

Check my first interview with Kacy at On the Beat With Kacy Standohar. Go to AllCHGO.com to see Kacy's great work and lots of interesting sports coverage.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #627 Pat Patterson & Norman Smiley

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a weekly series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebrities wearing jerseys. With WrestleMania coming April 2-3, I feature some wrestlers.

Born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, Pat Patterson enjoyed a length career in the ring and in the office of the WWE. He was the first Intercontinental Champion after "winning" it in a fictitious tournament. He is also credited with creating the Royal Rumble. Paterson was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 1996 and died in 2020. Patterson wore the sweater of his home town Montreal Canadiens to earn his Celebrity Jersey Card.

Norman Smiley was born in England, but began his wrestling career in the United States. His greatest fame during his run in World Championship Wrestling. He gained popularity as an unwilling hardcore champ who often wore plenty of protective padding in his matches. Such was the case when Smiley dressed as a Toronto Maple Leafs goalie during a match against Brian Knobbs to earn his Celebrity Jersey Card.

Frank the Clown at C2E2 2020

Frank the Clown has accomplished a lot in wrestling and he has earned it. He gets his share of jeers, but I give him his due credit.
Being the significant other of Noelle Foley (Mick's daughter) is enough to get the negative folks on his back. Getting into pro wrestling is more fodder.
One needs to look deeper at Frank. On the Chicago scene, Frank has been aligned with "The Ego" Robert Anthony, a legend her for two decades. If he's cool with Ego, that's enough for me. Ego is no nonsense. If Frank is accepted by Ego, he has to be okay.
Furthermore, I have seen Frank take a lot of big bumps in the ring. He isn't just flash around the ring. H gets involved and is paying his dues.
Frank also promotes well. He was one of a very few indy wrestlers I have seen at comic cons. When I saw him at C2E2 2020, we had a good time catching up about our brief time working together at Resistance Pro Wrestling in Chicago. He even gave me one of his wigs for a clowning around picture.
I think Frank has won over lots of fans over the years. The few remaining naysayers just need to put aside their gripe and enjoy his antics.
Go to C2E2.com for more info and updates. Also, check out Frank the Clown on social media for a lot of fun in and out of the wrestling ring.

Kate Leth at C2E2 2017

C2E2 2023 is approaching quickly. Running March 31-April 2, it is one of my regular comic con stops. I'll be back "On the Beat" at C2E2 2023 meeting all sorts of celebrities and creators, like Kate Leth.
A native of Canada, Leth is a cartoonist, writer, designer and illustrator. She began publishing online comics in 2011 and has gone on to build an impressive resume. In 2016, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue animation and quickly was hired by Hasbro. Currently, she is working on Mall Goth, her debut graphic novel. Immensely creative and talented, Leth is also an embroiderer, poet, makeup artist, photographer, video game fanatic and a lot more.
I met Leth several years back at C2E2 and was intrigued by the artwork I saw at her booth. While a lot of her work is aimed at teens and younger folks, I still enjoyed the beauty of it.
One of her coolest works is a 10-volume comic series featuring Edward Scissorhands, part whimsy, par mystery, it si a fun series. It's very well-written with beautiful illustrations.
Go to KateLeth.com for more info on this talented creator. Also, check CE2.com for all the info on this year's event.

On the Beat With Jenna Bike

Earlier today, I interviewed Jenna Bike, forward with the National Women's Soccer League Chicago Red Stars. It was my first interview with a member of the Red Stars, but hopefully not my last. That interview is on YouTube at On the Beat With Jenna Bike.

Hailing from Trumbull, Connecticut, Jenna was a two-time Connecticut Gatorade Player of the Year honoree, before starring collegiately at Boston College. She was also enrolled in BC's four-year nursing program.

In her first season at BC, she started all 18 games, earning BC's Freshman Scholar-Athlete of the Year award. In her second season, she played and started in 19 of the team's 20 games. She also received the Athletics Director's Award for Academic Achievement and made the ACC Honor Roll both seasons.

As a junior, she played 20 games (starting 19), finishing third on the team in shots and shots on goal and second in assists. She was named to the All-New England First Team and the Division 1 All-Atlantic Region Second Team.

An injury caused her to miss her senior year, but she returned as a grad player and Team Captain in 2020-21. Starting all 14 games, she finished second on the team in scoring. In 2021, she also began her doctorate and worked as a nurse.

Jenna played nine games with New Jersey/New York Gotham FC last season. Coincidentally, she made her NWSL debut against the Red Stars. In January, the Red Stars signed Jenna to a two-year contract.

In our interview, Jenna discussed her start in soccer, putting on her first pro jersey, joining the Red Stars, SeatGeek Stadium and more. She also talked a bit about experiencing Chicago.

Last season, the Red Stars finished in sixth place with a record of 9-7-6, good for 33 points. The team finished in second place in the Challenge Cup.

The Red Stars open their season Saturday, March 25 in San Diego against the San Diego Wave FC, who finished last season with 36 points and a 10-6-6 record.

For more information on Jenna and the Red Stars, go to ChicagoRedStars.com. Also follow here for my recurring coverage.

On the Beat With Ed Hearn

In late August 1986, as a rookie catcher, Ed Hearn was called upon to fill in for an injured Gary Carter. Over 11 games, Ed batted .275 and played errorless ball as the Mets went 8-3. Ed was a big help as the Mets went on to win the World Series. Now, Ed needs some help.

Shortly after retiring in 1991, Ed was diagnosed with Focal Segmental Glomerulusclerosis, requiring dialysis and a kidney transplant. Ed received a kidney in 1992. It would be the first of three kidney transplants Ed would have. Now, Ed needs a new kidney.

I originally became a fan of Ed's in my youth, when I was a bespectacled catcher. I was happy to see Ed reach the MLB with the Mets after several years in the Philadelphia Phillies organization. Then I was ecstatic when Ed played so well while Carter was injured.

There's more to Ed's baseball career than just those 11 games though, but those stories will wait for another time. Today, is more about Ed's current plight.

I interviewed Ed this morning. He did indulge me in a little baseball talk, but soon we segued into the serious topic of his present situation. Ed is in end stage kidney failure and desperately needs to find a kidney donor. The interview is at On the Beat With Ed Hearn on YouTube.

The good news is the kidney transplant world has changed greatly over the years. There are direct and non-directed kidney donations. Perhaps more important even is the paired kidney exchange. These options are better explained by the Kidney Registry, but all could literally be life-savers. Ed also discusses this in our interview.

Like other medical procedures, the actual operation is also much less invasive than it once was. Additionally, for a living donor, the remaining kidney functions as two with no real effects for the donor.

Ed has overcome a lot in his life and he always rebounds positively. He uses his experiences in his role as a motivational speaker. For a person to go through all of this and remain positive speaks a lot of his attitude and faith. Ed has a lot more to contribute to society, but he needs a little help now.

As for more baseball stories, Ed promised another interview in the future after a transplant. I'm holding Ed to that, because I know he has great stories and I believe he will come through this latest battle like the champ he is.

For more info, go to Kidney4Ed.net. I'll also update Ed's story here and on TheEveryDayFan.com.

On my writer's side note, Ed was not having a particularly good morning today, but he insisted on fulfilling his promise of the interview, because that is who he is.

On the Beat With Gina Versace-Fiore

I have always been curious and open-minded about spirits. I have wanted to talk to someone with knowledge and experience for a long time, not to get a reading (at least yet), but to learn.

When I saw a social media post by Jenniffer Weigel that included Inked Medium Gina Versace-Fiore, I knew I found the perfect person. I contacted Gina asking for an interview. I was honest, explaining I was neutral on the subject, but genuinely wanted to learn more. Gina graciously accepted my request and quickly set a time.

I anxiously waited the several days for the interview. I found an interview she did with Pat Longo. It was a fantastic interview, giving lots of info. It also helped shape the questions I had for Gina.

This morning, Gina promptly popped on Zoom and away we went. She was incredibly outgoing and patient. I realize some of my questions were a bit elementary, but I figured if I wondered, others probably did, too. Either way, Gina answered everything. She explained her skills, contacting the spirit world, how it works and more.

Some of the highlights for me included Gina discussing the circle of spirits (family, friends etc.). In other words, could she contact anyone, even if I didn't know the person. She also explained receiving bad news, the spirits interacting and what type of messages are delivered by the spirits. I also greatly respected her answering how she dealt with a non-believer.

Aside from my gained knowledge, my biggest takeaway was her passion for what she does and for helping people. Neither before nor after the interview did she try to sell me on anything, including a reading. She did not try to push her services on me or in the interview, except at the end when I asked her to give her info for those watching. She was happy to enlighten me on all the topics we covered and I am grateful for her willingness to share her story.

Near the end, I had a little extra off-topic fun when we talked hockey, specifically her love of the New York Islanders, as I saw her framed Mike Bossy jersey in the background. From my research, I already knew she loved the team, but the jersey reminded me to ask. She didn't hesitate to mention the team won four Stanley Cups. Although a lifelong fan of the Blackhawks, I had to love the Islanders back then.

My goal in the interview was to educate myself and Gina delivered big time. I hope viewers enjoy the interview and get some of their questions answered.

I really appreciate Gina giving me her time and consideration. She has a lot of demands on her time, but she gave me a thoughtful, thought-provoking conversation. I encourage everyone to listen to Gina's interview with Pat Longo and to look for the Inked Medium on social media (Instagram, twitter and Facebook).

Friend Encounters: Mikaela Dokes and Sarah Cernugel

Friend Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

I first came across Mikaela Dokes a couple years ago. The youngster was a basketball junkie and a fantastic player for her age. I interviewed Mikaela and her father Walter at On the Beat With Mikaela Dokes.
I loved seeing Walter post pictures of Mikaela with many college players, including Notre Dame's Sarah Cernugel. She looks so happy and the players love seeing young fans. I'm sue they appreciate old fans like me, too, but I am nowhere near as cute as little Mikaela.
Cernugel has had an interesting career with the Fighting Irish. As a sophomore, she was one of two walk-ons in the 2021-22 season. While her playing time was a bit limited, she still saw action in 10 games, scoring in two of them. This season, she has appeared in nine games (as of this wrting), scoring two points. It might not seem like much, but Cernugel is a vital part of the team. A great practice player, she pushes the others to greater levels. Still, hopefully, she will see more time in her senior year next season.
As for Mikaela, she has a bright future on the court. I will be following her progress all the way, as I have the last couple years. Young athletes like Mikaela are the future of women's sports.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #626 The Miz & La Parka

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a weekly series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebrities wearing jerseys. With WrestleMania coming April 2-3, I feature some wrestlers.

Born in Parma, OH, Mike Mizanin rose to fame on The Real World, before segueing to wrestling. Since debuting in the WWE in 2004, "The Miz" has won numerous singles and tag team titles. Too often criticized, perhaps longevity is turning the tide for Fans. Mizanin is a hard-worker and a talented showman. He donned a Cavaliers jersey for his Celebrity Jersey Card. The #40 has been worn by sveral players for short stints, with James Edwards being the best perhaps.
A native of Mexico, Jesus Alfonso Huerta Escoboza was a professional wrestler, who died from injuries sustained in the ring. Better known as LaParka, he won several titles in  Mexico, although he wrestled in the United States often. LaParka put the Phoenix Gorilla in a backbreaker at a Phoenix Suns game to earn his Celebrity Jersey Card. The #17 he wore was most notably worn my P.J. Tucker for several years.

Cards That Never Were: Cesare Maniago Topps 1961-62, '65-66, '66-67 and '78-79

Cards That Never Were is a recurring series in which I create virtual cards for players missed in various sets over the years. It is a concept I have borrowed from far too many to list, but I appreciate all of them. You can find more of my creations and a lot of other great creations (and not just baseball cards) in the Custom Baseball Cards group on Facebook.
Goaltender Cesare Maniago made his NHL debut with the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1960-61 season. He made it back to the NHL with the Montreal Canadiens in the '62-63 season. His next trip to the NHL was in '66-67 with the New York Rangers. This time he was there to stay. Two seasons with the Rangers were followed by nine seasons with the Minnesota North Stars. He finished his career with two seasons with the Vancouver Canucks, retiring after the '77-78 season. All told, Maniago played in 568 games with a 3.27 goals against average.
For his efforts, Maniago, Parkhurst gave him a card in the '63-64 set. Topps/OPC gave him a card in their sets from '68-69 through '77-78. That left '61-62, '65-66, '66-67 and '78-79. The first two aren't great, but there isn't much available to use.

On the Beat With "The Amazing Amazon" Natasha Crane

I am a big fan of women's wrestling. Although “The Amazing Amazon” Natasha Crane has been on my radar for a long time, I have not seen her wrestle in person yet. After hearing many great reviews and watching plenty of videos of her, Crane is someone I definitely want and need to see in person.

Yesterday, I did the next best thing by interviewing her. Having no previous interaction with her other then to set up the interview, I had no idea what to expect. I had a great time talking to her and it was one of the rare times an interview went way off topic in a fun way. That interview is at On the Beat With Natasha Crane.

Crane started by discussing her start in wrestling. Naming Luna Vachon and Sherri Martel as her favorites certainly endeared her to me. It was so refreshing to hear a modern wrestler pay homage to two old school wrestlers who too often are forgotten.

Although she lost the Southland Championship Wrestling Women's title in December, Crane enjoyed her lengthy run as champ. A broken hand has kept her out of the ring since the loss, but she is about ready to return. Although she is not on the card for SCW's Mayhem on March 18, Crane will be in the building, which means you never know what might happen.

Crane indulged me as I played armchair booker wanting to see Cran battle POWW's Mistress Misery. The two companies battled each other for a good part of last year and seem to be peacefully interacting now, which means that match could happen.

It was about here when I asked Crane about her interests away from the ring and the interview took an unexpected detour. Crane is a big roller coaster enthusiast, having ridden on many over the years. She talked about her upcoming overseas roller coaster trip. This is no casual hobby for Crane. This is a passion.

I really enjoyed this interview with Crane. Hearing her respect for two legends was a great start and learning about roller coasters was a fun end. Crane is a formidable force in the ring, who loves wrestling for SCW, but as she stated in a post-interview message exchange, she is not one dimensional.

Crane started our interview by joking that she wondered when I might interview her. While I usually wait until I have seen the wrestler in action, this is one time I am glad I didn't wait. The Amazing Amazon is someone I need to see in the ring and Crane is someone I am glad I got to know away from the squared circle.

Check out Crane on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube. Also, follow Southland Championship Wrestling to get their updates.

On the Beat With Kenny Casanova

Kenny Casanova has done a lot in and out of the wrestling ring. In our interview earlier today, Kenny discusses all of it, including “Ken Patera: Weight of the World,” his newest book project. That interview is at On the Beat With Kenny Casanova.

Already a wrestling fan, Kenny got his start in the business helping at a show run by Captain Lou Albano. A few years later, he attended a professional wrestling school to really get his career started.

During his career, he wrestled, managed and did color commentary. He has worked with legends such as Demolition, King Kong Bundy, Damien Sandow and countless others.

Eventually, his mic skills led him to deejay work. Although he was very successful at that, his love of wrestling tugged at him. Enter Kamala (James Harris), who was having health issues at the time. Kenny approached him about writing his autobiography and another career path was born. Kamala was followed by Brutus Beefcake, Danny Davis, Sabu, Big Van Vader, Bugsy McGraw, Tito Santana and now Patera.

As impressive as a list that is, there are more books coming. Kenny is lending his talents to ODB and Earl Hebner for their life stories.

I am very interested in Patera's story. Mostly out of the spotlight in recent years, he was pretty big in my youth. He was an Olympian turned pro wrestler. He had an infamous legal issue, which later got turned into a bit of a storyline in the WWF. This is all in the book, but Kenny gave me a brief glimpse into that story.

I ended by asking when Kenny would pen his own story. I wasn't joking. People like Kenny are the backbone of the industry. It is folks like him who keep wrestling alive. He doesn't get the headlines or accolades, but his story is fascinating. I have only glossed over his lengthy career. Actually, a lot of his story can be found on his website. Although factual, it is spiked with lots of humor.

“Ken Patera: Weight of the World” is available for pre-order with an expected release in April. As Kenny states in the interview, pre-ordering the book might bring an additional surprise, too.

Thanks to Kenny for his time and consideration. Go to KennyCasanova.com for more info on Kenny and his books. Check TheEveryDayFan.com for updates on the book and the rest of our wrestling coverage.

Thank You Coach Allison Guth and the Loyola Ramblers

The Loyola Women's Basketball team finished an underwhelming 6-24, ending with a 16 game losing streak. Despite the ugly record, I had a lot of fun covering the Ramblers this season.

The Ramblers often played with less players than opponents. That left the starters exhausted by the end of the game, missing shots and sluggish on defense, when they ordinarily would have been much better. They also had a new coach and played in a new conference.

I am not making excuses for the record. Good teams rise above. Loyola Coach Allison Guth would be the first to say that.

I like Coach Guth. I find her to be positive and refreshingly open and honest. Her players speak glowingly of her, both on and off the record.

Was this season part of a learning curve? Will a new crop of first year players adapt to Coach Guth's system quicker? Will the four or five returning seniors use their experience and lead the team to a better season?

Only time will tell, but I actually believe next season will be much improved. I'm not blindly positive. I just saw a lot of heart and talent. Coach Guth's hands were tied, but you can't win playing your starters 35 or more minutes each. With healthier players and one year of Coach Guth's system, the Ramblers will have a better season. I could honestly see them doubling their wins.

Check back here for my recurring coverage. Also go to LoyolaRamblers.com for more info on the team.

The Legendary Mad Man Pondo

Mad Man Pondo has done it all in pro wrestling and beyond. If you want proof, check out his book Memoirs of a Mad Man, co-written by my pal John Cosper.
I am not promoting his book because John and Pondo are my friends. Also, it is not just a book for wrestling fans. It is a book of almost unbelievable stories which actually happened.
Pondo has a well-earned reputation as one of the best or most hardcore wrestlers. He was one of the few wrestlers who intimidated me when I approached for an interview. He was also one of the nicest I ever interviewed. The duality of Pondo is well-known to his friends and fans. He can battle with the best, but he is a great guy.
He also continues to give back. I saw him help many young wrestlers at RPro. He was very giving of his time and knowledge.
Similarly, he started Girl Fight Wrestling a few years back to help young women wrestlers get experience and exposure. After the pandemic caused the world to stop, I am happy to see GFW is putting on a show March 7 in Jeffersonville, Indiana. I keep hoping Pondo brings GFW to Chicago. I'd be in the front row!
For more info on Pondo, look for him on social media. Also, check out EatSleepWrestle.com for John Cosper's books.

Friend Encounters: Sis Bates and Tony Feddeler

Friend Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends meeting celebrities.

Tony Feddeler and I enjoyed a lot of Athletes Unlimited softball games last season. A longtime fan of the now defunct National Pro Fastpitch Chicago Bandits, Tony was the perfect game mate for me. We both loe softball and miss the Bandits.

AU is a different type league though. It's based on a fantasy points type scoring system. Team change every week and there is only one individual champion at the end of the season. That sounds odd and at times it is a bit strange following and cheering for players and nota team. Still, it comes down to simple softball and that is what we love.

After one of the games, Tony met Sis Bates, one of his favorite players. A former star at the University of Washington, Bates is also on the US National team. She is an elite shortstop on defense and offense. She's extremely fan friendly and thus a fan favorite.

We hope Bates will ba back for AU SB 2023. We know we will return, as we are now season ticket holders.

Go to AUProSports.com for more info on all of AU sports leagues. AU Softball returns to Rosemont, IL in August.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #625 Chuck Burgi & James Hetfield

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a weekly series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebrities wearing jerseys.

Chuck Burgi has played drums with so many great musicians, including Billy Joel currently. I had the pleasure of interviewing Chuck, which can be found at On the Beat With Chuck Burgi. Chuck earned his Celebrity Jersey Card wearing a sweater of the New York Rangers who called Madison Square Garden home for many years, just like Billy calls it home for his record-breaking residency there.
Born in California, James Hetfield has appeared on Celebriy Jersey Cards repping the San Francisco Giants. Today, he switched sports by wearing a San Jose Sharks jersey for another Celebrity Jersey Card. The co-founder of Metallica has to have a California Golden Seals jersey somewhere. Hopefully, one day I'll see Hetfield or another celeb wearing that glorious sweater, although I do love the Sjarks sweater, too.

Cards That Never Were: Eddie Johnston Topps 1978-79

Cards That Never Were is a recurring series in which I create virtual trading cards for players missed in various sets over the years. It is a concept I have borrowed from far too many to list, but I appreciate all of their efforts. More of my creations and thousands from others can be found in the Custom Baseball Cards Facebook group, which isn't limited to just baseball, despite the title.

Goalie Eddie Johnston made his NHL debut with the Boston Bruins in the 1962-63 season. He stayed with the Bruins through the 1972-73 season. After being traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs in the offseason, he spent the 1973-74 season with the team, before joining the St. Louis Blues. He 3.5 seasons with the Blues, before being traded to the Chicago Blackhawks. He finished the season with the Hawks and then retired. He went on to coach the Blackhawks and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

For his career, Johnston played 592 games over 16 seasons. He had a 3.25 goals against average and a .851 save percentage.

Johnston got cards in sets from 1963-64 through 1977-78. That only left a 1978-79 card, which was extra important to me, because it would have been his "career capper" card with the Hawks. Unfortunately, he only played four games with the Hawks and pictures were impossible to find. After years of searching, Jeff from the aforementioned Facebook group solved my quest by creating a cad for Johnston.

Meeting Katie Somers of Simply Sounds

Musicians Rod Guico and Katie Somers make up Simply Sound. They are a versatile act, capable of entertaining live crowds at festivals, shows, restaurants, weddings and more.
Simply Sound performs a variety of songs, including hits from today and the past few decades. They play everything from soulful ballads to upbeat dance tunes. I love their harmonies, but their unique mash-ups are fun, too. They have a lot of fun on stage and make it enjoyable for the audience.
I had the pleasure of hearing and meeting them in 2021, when they performed at Moretti's near me. Prior to their performance, I met Katie. As I usually do, I got there so early, Rod wasn't even there yet. Poor Katie, she had to deal with me solo for a few minutes before Rod appeared. I chatted to both briefly and took pictures, before letting them get prepared for their performance.
It was my first time seeing them and I really enjoyed them. I haven't seen them since, but I follow them and hope to see them soon.
Go to SimplySoundLive.com for more info. Also, follow Simply Sound on Facebook for more frequent updates.

Adolfo Dorta and Squared Circle Expo

I met Adolfo about 12 years ago at a convention where he was one of the promoters. He was great to me for many years. He left the convention on his terms, but with unpleasant details. That's his story to tell though.
The better story is where he is now. He is one of the organizers of Squared Circle Expo, a fantastic wrestling convention which will have its third event April 7-8 in Indianapolis. I have written about SCX many times and I will continue to write about it because it is really a fun weekend.
Just walking into the Wyndham Indianapolis West and seeing Adolfo, his wife Carrie, Ed and Heather is like seeing family. That's one of the very cool parts of the convention. There's a strong family feel to the event and that comes from that foursome.
At last year's SCX, I saw an Adolfo who seemed to be more relaxed and having more fun than ever. Representing opposing wrestlers in the main event, Adolfo stunned the crowd (including me) by spearing Ed. It was  a textbook spear, worthy of the big stage, despite Ed being considerably bigger than Adolfo. I am sure Adolfo will hold that memory with pride.
SCX has too many wrestlers, vendors and events to list here. It's loaded with legends, Hall of Famers and current stars. I will be "On the Beat" all weekend.
Go to SquaredCircleX.com for more info. Then, buy your tickets and join the fun.

The Johngy "OR ELSE" Podcast Ep. 55: "Zack Hudson & Brad Balof - Golden-Con"

Picture it...

Chicago... 2023.

3 Men come together with a dream to assemble a celebration of one of the greatest television shows of all time.

People came from all over the world to commune with one another with a common love for all that made this show great.

There was cosplay, trivia, special guests, merchandise and more!

Host hotel Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk at 301 E. North Water Street, is a magnificent venue, featuring great views of the Chicago River, Lake Michigan and the Chicago skyline. Hotel restaurants include Shula's Steak House and Chicago Burger Company.

My podcast partner Tommy Else and I will be “On the Beat” all weekend, exploring every aspect of this fun convention. As a con junkie, I am anxious to experience a specific show convention. As a huge fan of show, Tommy is excited about being ensconced in “The Golden Girls” universe. Will Tommy cosplay as any character? You'll have to follow our coverage to get that answer, along with our updates and recap of this great convention. That Episode is at The Johngy "OR ELSE" Podcast - Ep. 55: "Zack Hudson & Brad Balof."

Thank you to Zack and Brad for their time and consideration. Also, thank you to Tommy, who contributed to the writing of this piece.

On the Beat With Truth Martini

Truth Martini was one of my first wrestling interviews. Despite being one of the most successful and popular managers in the midwest, Truth gave this rookie several minutes of his time on show night. Flash forward more than a decade, with Truth celebrating 25 years in the business, I Zoom revisited Truth live from his House of Truth wrestling school. That interview is at On the Beat With Truth Martini.

Making his wrestling debut in 1998 while being trained by Al Snow, Truth really gained fame during his lengthy run in Ring of Honor. When his in-ring career was derailed by a neck injury, Truth made an unplanned, but smooth transition to managing. Later he added trainer, another unexpected role, to his resume.

Eventually, he opened The House of Truth Wrestling School in Center Line, Michigan, just north of Detroit and his birthplace Hamtramck. At the House of Truth, students can learn any and every aspect of the wrestling business. Some alumni include Alex Shelley, Danhausen, Jimmy Jacobs and Zach Gowan.

In our interview, Truth discussed all of this, speaking in such a humble and positive manner. At one point, citing his love of wrestling, Truth states he would do this for free. That isn't just cliché interview quote, Truth means it. One example is the lifetime membership to the House of Truth. Once a student pays his fee, he is welcome back any time and many alums, including Shelley, return on a regular basis for more education.

With no planning or training, Truth was thrust into a manager's role, a role he embraced. He excelled in that tole to the point of the legendary Jim Cornette not only praising his work, but guiding him a bit. Similarly, while still active, Truth was invited to teach a class and another new direction came for him.

Were these instances happenstance? Luck? Maybe a little of both, but mostly they were others recognizing something special in Truth. You can't speak to Truth without feeling his aura.

The thing that impressed me the most about Truth is his positive nature. He didn't let his neck injury keep him down. He praises his students. He is willing, even eager, to discuss wrestling any time.

Truth is one of a kind. There are a lot of wrestling trainers and schools, but there's only one Truth.

For more info on Truth and The House of Truth Wrestling School, go to HotWrestlingSchool.com. Also, check my recurring wrestling coverage her and on TheEveryDayFan.com.
