Celebrity Jersey Cards #633: Sarah Nurse & Elaine Chuli

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a weekly feature in which I create virtual trading cards for celebrities wearing sports jerseys. With the MLB season upon us, I continue marching through all teams alphabetically.

Hamilton, Ontario, Canada native Sarah Nurse, comes from an athletic family. Her cousins are pro hockey player Darnell Nurse  and WNBA star Kia Nurse. Her uncles are her former NFL QB Donovan McNabb and Richard Nurse of the Canadian Football League (CFL). A member of Team Canada, Nurse set two new Olympic records for most points (18) and most assists (13) in a single women's tournament n Beijing. Nurse showed her baseball skills tossing a first pitch for her home town Blue Jays to earn her Celebrity Jersey Card.

Fellow Canadian Elaine Chuli starred at the University of Connecticut. A star goaltender, Chuli played internationally and is currently playing for the Toronto Six of the Premier Hockey Federation. Chuli threw out a first pitch for the Blue Jays to get her Celebrity Jersey Card.

Cards That Never Were: Mike Reinbach Topps 1975

Cards That Never Were is a recurring series in which I create virtual trading cards for players missed in various sets over the years. It is a concept I have borrowed from far too many to list, but I appreciate all of their efforts.
Today is an exception to my rule of creating cards. Today's CTNW comes from the creative mind of Gio of When Topps Had (Base)Balls. Gio's site is filled with hundreds of his beautiful creations.
When I saw a picture of former Baltimore Orioles outfielder Mike Reinbach, I set out to make a 1975 card for his '74 season (his only season). I then quickly saw Gio's card and figured there was no point in me trying to create one when Gio's was perfect as is.
The Orioles selected Reinbach in the first round (17th overall) of the 1970 MLB Draft. Reinbach made it to the MLB roster for 12 games in 1974. He went 5-20 with two runs scored and two RBI. While that was it for his MLB career, he went to Japan for five seasons, hitting a solid .296.
Gio made the '75 card, which serves as Reinbach's rookie and career capper all in one. It's a great looking card and Gio has many more awesome cards on his site.

Finally Met Kylie Rae (and Gemini)

It took a long time and several twists in the journey, but I finally met wrestler Kylie Rae. As an added bonus, I also met Gemini, her little furry friend.
Kylie is a talented young wrestler who I have seen in action several times. She is easily one of the best on the indie scene and really deserves to be in a big company. Despite seeing her wrestle several times, I always missed actually meeting her. Even when she appeared at Resistance Pro when I was there, I missed her shows due to my throat surgery.
When I saw she was appearing at a Freelance Academy show, I immediately notified my buddy Tony and we made plans to go. Like me, Tony also never met Kylie and really wanted to finally do so.
We arrived early, as always. We even saw he walk Gemini before the show, but we didn't want to bother her on her time.
When the doors opened, we learned Kylie would be coming out at intermission, not during the pre-show meet and greet. We were crunched on time and couldn't stay until intermission though.
Fortunately, with help from several people, including Isaias Velazquez of Freelance and Sean Lennon of the Pro Wrestling Enforcer Podcast, we got our message through to Kylie, who then came out to meet us.
Kylie could not have been any sweeter. She even asked us for hugs. We talked for a few minutes, before letting her get back to work. Before we parted, she asked if we wanted pictures and of course, we did. Then she asked if we wanted to take pictures with Gemini, too. Again, of course, we did! We hugged again and left.
What a pleasant experience. Already fans of Kylie, now we are even bigger supporters. Kylie is the type of wrestler we would go to a show specifically to see. It was awesome to see she was so nice outside of the ring. Thank you Kylie and thank you to Freelance Academy!

On the Beat With Sam Fischer

As the college softball season nears its playoffs, the Athletes Unlimited (AU) softball players are gearing up for AUX starting in early June. Heading into the AUX season, I had the privilege of interviewing Sam Fischer, who is always ready for softball playing and discussion. Find it at On the Beat With Sam Fischer.
A star at Loyola Marymount, among her many accomplishments, Fischer was a four-year letter winner, who became the first All-America selection in program history. At the end of her career there, she was the Lions’ all-time leader in HRs (65), RBIs (172), total bases (495), batting average (.387), slugging percentage (.786), on-base percentage (.494), runs scored (194), doubles (52) and walks (127). Fittingly, she was inducted into Loyola Marymount Sports Hall of Fame in 2019 and had her No. 52 jersey retired. Since college, Sam played for Team USA, in the NPF (National Pro Fastpitch) and the Japanese Professional League.
In 2020, Sam joined more than 50 other elite women softball players for the inaugural season of AU softball, a new, unique league. Based on team and individual points, with weekly redrafts, culminating in an individual champion, AU put a new spin on softball. Although AU incorporates fantasty league-type elements, it retains the basics of the sport I love.
Last season, Sam finished in seventh place among the 56+ players. Aside from being one of the best, Sam is one of the most fun players.
When I reached out to Sam for an interview, she was very gracious in granting me time, despite her normally busy schedule. When something came up, she even asked for the interview to be done earlier in the day, to have more time to chat. How awesome is that?!  I mentioned I would be asking about her travels and she was completely into that, too.
Of course, the interview starts with softball talk. Sam discussed when she knew she was good at softball, playing in AU, her role on the AU Executive Committee, helping to make the sport bigger for future players and more. Then talk turned to travel. Through Team USA and her pro career, Sam has traveled to Japan, The Netherlands and more. She gives fun info on preparing and packing, as well as revealing her favorite places.
AUX starts Friday, June 9 in Rosemont, Illinois. Sam will be there, playing third for either the Gold, Orange, Purple or Blue. No matter the color, Sam will bring her usual elite play and fun personality to the field. I will be “On the Beat” all season, providing recaps for The Every Day Fan.
Thank you to Sam for her time and consideration. Also, on behalf of softball fans everywhere, but especially in the Chicago area, thanks to Sam and all the AU players for brightening our summer. Check AUProSports.com for more info on Sam and the league.

The Johngy "OR ELSE" Podcast - Ep. 62: Professor Kliq

On The Johngy "OR ELSE" Podcast - Ep. 62: Professor Kliq, Tommy and I welcome a very special guest. Professor Kiq is a very familiar guest or more precisely, he is familial. Professor Kliq is the alter ego of Mike Else, Tommy's younger, musician brother.
Mike lives in Portland, Oregon with his wife and child. As Professor Kliq, he is returning to Chicago for a special performance on May 5.
Tommy and I wanted Mike on our podcast for a long time and this was the perfect opportunity.
Mike is a great guy and super talented. I have met him several times and interviewed him, too. It was always fun with him.
As much as I like Mike, there is nothing like the brotherly bond. I know how much Tommy loves and respects his brother.
Lending his thoughts, Tommy said, "I have had the unique privilege of seeing my Brother “Professor Kliq”… Grow from a young teenager dabbling in the art of electronic music, to see the commodity he has become. He has released several albums, he has scored documentaries, video games. Television shows and more! I am extremely proud of him, and am honored to have the unique perspective of seeing it unfold from the front row."
Honestly, it would be worth it to me just to see Tommy's face at the show. It will be a special night for the Else brothers and I can't wait to witness it.

Appreciating Missa Kate

Although she debuted in 2018, I somehow hadn't seen Miss Kate wrestle until last year. Of course, the pandemic caused some of that, but it doesn't account for the rest of the time.
Trained by Bryce Benjamin and Steve Boz, "Chicago's Sweetheart" has progressed quickly. After years of not seeing her, last years I caught her wrestle for Women's Wrestling Army, 2econd Wrestling and Freelance and each time I was more impressed. I have only seen her wrestle as a heel, a role she fits well/ She is a classic, from her verbal sparring to old school tactics.
She recently signed with the NWA, but will continue to wrestle elsewhere in between NWA appearances. Still in her 20s, Missa Kate should continue to improve. It wouldn't surprise me to see her sign with AEW someday.
Through The Johngy "OR ELSE" podcast, I had the pleasure of interviewing her with Tommy Else. That interview is at The Johngy "OR ELSE" Podcast - Ep. 39: "Missa Kate." I learned a lot about her, including her goals in and out of wrestling. Now I am an even bigger fan of hers.
I don't want to ruin her image, but if you ever meet her after the shows, you will also see she is one of the nicest people you will ever meet. I look forward to seeing her wrestle more in 2023.
The next time I should see Missa Kate will be at 2econd Wrestling on April 27. She is in a fourway championship match with Arik Cannon and Effy against champ Billie Starkz. For more info on that event, check 2econd Wrestling on Facebook

Friend Encounters: Michael Crouse and Jim Strong

Friend Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends meeting celebrities.

Occasional Johngy's Beat Contributor Jim Strong has become a big fan of the Chicago Dogs. Based in Rosemont, right by the old Chicago Bandits Ballpark, the Dogs play in beautiful Impact Field.

The Dogs are very fan-friendly. Every Sunday, fans are invited to take the field to play catch or mingle with players before the game. Jim and I have talked to many players and coaches over the years.

The picture below is bittersweet for Jim though. Outfielder Michael Crouse is one of his favorites. Unfortunately, Crouse was traded to the Milwaukee Milkmen during last season. I guess Jim will have to go to a Sunday game when the Milkmen are in town to hopefully get a pic with Crouse in his new uniform.

The Dogs open their season May 12. Go to TheChicagoDogs.com for more info and scheduling.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #632: Alissa Dalton & Simone Biles

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a weekly feature in which I create virtual trading cards for celebrities wearing sports jerseys. With the MLB season upon us, I continue marching through all teams alphabetically.

A native of Texas, Alissa Dalton starred on the softball field at the University of Louisiana. Dalton plays for Team USA, as well as in the Women's Professional Softball League. A true fan of the Houston Astros, Dalton wore her Astros jersey on her own time and earned a Celebrity Jersey Card for it.

Born in Texas, Simone Biles won seven Olympic medals to tie Shannon Miller for the most Olympic medals won by an American gymnast and is ninth-most overall. Her gymnastic abilities were on display when she tossed a first pitch for the Astros to earn her Celebrity Jersey Card. Biles has done this move for several teams, but each is just as impressive.

Cards That Never Were: Tommy Cruz Topps 1974 & '78

Cards That Never Were is a recurring series in which I create virtual cards for players missed in various sets over the years. It is a concept I have borrowed from far too many to list, but I appreciate all of their efforts.

I usually feature cards I have created, but sometimes I lean on others. Such is the case today.

Lynn is a prolific custom card creator I know from the Custom Baseball Cards group on Facebook. The group has thousands of custom created cards, many done by Lynn and they aren't just baseball. There are all other sports and even non-sports included.

Tommy Cruz was signed as a free agent by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1969. His brother Jose was already a member of the organization and his other brother Hector would be signed the next year. Tommy made it to the Majors in 1973, appearing in three games for the Cardinals. He scored one run with no at bats. He was traded to the Texas Rangers after the 1973 season and then purchased by the Chicago White Sox prior to the '77 season. H appeared in four games for the Sox, going 0-2 with one run scored. He was traded to the New York Yankees after the season and never made it back to the Majors. For his career, he played in seven games, with no hits in two at bats and two runs scored. For his efforts, Topps did not give Tommy any cards, which is understandable, but I would have loved a Cruz brothers card in 1974.

I intended to create cards for Tommy, but found Lynn already did them. Since I couldn't do any better, I will simply present Lynn's versions.

Alydar Skyy

A few months back, when I went to see Al Snow and David Vox Mullen on their comedy tour, a pleasant surprise was Alydar Skyy, another comedian with them. It was my first time seeing Alydar and I was really impressed.
As worlds collided, I later saw Alydar perform at Divorce Diaries, Michele Traina's one woman show. Alydar is a writer to the Divorce Diaries television show in production. David is a producer on the series, too.
Although Alydar's sets were short, because the others were the main acts, she was very funny and made the most of her time. I also had the pleasure of chatting with her at both shows.
The fun is far from over though. I will see Alydar April 29, when Al and David return to Chicago at Zanies.
It's been a few months since I saw the trio. I look forward to seeing how the set has evolved, since Al and David have done many shows together since then. Of course, I am also very happy to see Alydar again.
Follow Alydar on Instagram @Alydarrox. Also, go to Chicago.Zanies.com for more info on the Al Snow and David Vox Mullen Show with Alydar.

Happy Birthday, Jean!

Today I celebrate the birthday of my sister Jean. I am sure she will be celebrating in Florida, but I send her wishes from chilly Chicago.
I can't believe my sister is a grandmother. It seems just yesterday we were fighting over something silly as kids. Of course at the time, I had no idea how the future would play out and how awesome she was and is.
At least as an adult, I appreciate al that she is. She's a great mom, grandmother, sister and friend. I am so lucky to have her in my life. As I have previously written, my sisters are my rocks. I love them dearly.
I love the picture below of Jean and her oldest granddaughter Delaney. Though they may be a bit too young now, I wonder if Delaney and her younger brother Teddy will battle like Jean and I did. My advice to both youngsters is to realize how special your sibling is right away.
Both my sisters will be back in the area soon and I look forward to a sibling lunch. For now though, I hope Jean has a fantastic birthday. I love you!

Caitlin Jo Burke Needs Help

I first met Caitlin Jo Burke in 2015 when I was covering the Chicago Bliss women's pro football team. A lifetime athlete in several sports, CJB was as tough as could be on the field and as sweet and fun as could be off the field.
I haven't seen Caitlin since that season, but I have followed her online. Unfortunately, her update last October was a bad one.
Caitlin went in for a hip surgery. Her health issues started shortly after the operation.
After dozens of tests, she was diagnosed with MOGAD. Myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody disease is a neurological, immune-mediated demyelinating disorder of the central nervous system causing inflammation and potential damage to the optic nerve, spinal cord, brain and brainstem. Obviously, it is a very serious condition. While still learning, treating and battling that, CJB was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Caitlin is 32 and as an athlete, was seemingly in great shape. Now, Caitlin fights to regain her life. She is a fighter though and optimistic. She will do everything possible to get through and get better.
Caitlin could use help though. Caitlin has a GoFundMe page. If you're a friend, former teammate or fan, reach out to her. Send her your thoughts, vibes, prayers and good wishes.
I have invited Caitlin to share her story and progress here any time. Of course, she isn't ready to do that yet, but I hope she eventually will because her story can help others, too.
I will provide updates here as things develop. Until then, I wish the best for Caitlin. Stay strong, CJB. You got this!

The Johngy "OR ELSE" Podcast - Ep. 60: Beat-Her Juice

On the latest episode of The Johngy "OR ELSE" Podcast, Tommy Else and I interviewed Beat-Her juice, of the Chicago Knockouts Roller Derby League. That interview can be found at The Johngy "OR ELSE" Podcast - Ep: 61 Beat-Her Juice.
Juice changed her name and gimmick for this season. Previously, Pamdemic, she felt she needed to change it this season and Beat--Her Juice has proven to be super popular with the fans. Of course, that si because she puts her spirit (no pun intended) into the character. Juice is one of the most interactive skaters. She is awesome on the track and very animated.
Juice talks about all of this in our interview. She also discussed how her science background comes into play on the track.
This was another great look into the women behind Chicago Knockouts Roller Derby. CKO is such a fun event. I think it will be even better when league founder Crimson Vixen, who we previously interviewed, finds a bigger home and implements the full track.
Follow the Chicago Knockouts on Facebook for more info and updates. Check out the rest of our episodes on The Johngy "OR ELSE" Podcast YouTube channel.

Friend Encounters: Shane Douglas, Francine, Sandman and Tony Feddeler

Friend Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

Last weekend, Tony Feddeler and I attended the Squared Circle Expo, a fantastic wrestling event in Indianapolis, Indiana. SCX III lived up to the type and level of success of the previous two events.
One of the great photo ops was with three ECW originals. Shane Douglas, Francine and Sandman were three of the main players who put ECW on the map. This was a rare opportunity to get a picture with all three.
As Tony joined the trio, I couldn't help but imagine this as a stable. Any of the three could be the champ and any two could make a formidable tag team. Francine would be the manager/valet occasionally aiding her team.
These three wrestling legends were joined by about 60 other stars of the past and present. This is such a fantastic event. Further proof is Tony was really bogged down with a bad cold heading into the event, but he toughed it out because we love SCX so much. Nowhere else can you find this many wrestlers in one space, plus all the other fun.
SCX I$ has already been announced for 3/29-30/24. For more info, check out SquaredCircleX.com and follow them on social media for more frequent updates.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #631: Gary Payton & Jerry Rice

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a weekly feature in which I create virtual trading cards for celebrities wearing sports jerseys. With the MLB season upon us, I continue marching through all teams alphabetically.

Born in Oakland, California, Gary Payton grew up to be an Basketball Hall of Famer. He spent 13 of his 17 seasons with the Seattle SuperSonics. "The Glove" was a defensive wizard, but also averaged 16.3 points per game in his career. Payton returned to his native Oakland to toss a ceremonial pitch and earn his Celebrity Jersey Card.

Born in Mississippi, Football Hall of Famer Jerry Rice previously got a Celebrity Jersey Card with the San Francisco Giants. Rice played 16 seasons with the SF 49ers, followed by four with the Oakland Raiders and part of a season with the Seattle Seahawks. To honor his time with the Raiders, Rice tossed a ceremonial pitch for the Oakland A's to earn his Celebrity Jersey Card. He wore his familiar #80, which hasn't been worn by any other member of the A's.

Rabbi Jeremy Fine and 2econd Wrestling

2econd Wrestling returns to the Chicago area Thursday, April 27. Altarcation also marks the return to Durty Nellies in Palatine.
Rabbi Jeremy Fine is the man behind 2econd. In about 18 months, Rabbi Fine has built 2econd Wrestling into a solid new wrestling company. He has done it without proclamations of greatness or grand plans. He does it with interesting wrestlers, solid matchups and outstanding matches. After seeing many 2econd Wrestling matches in person, I cannot recall any bad wrestling match. I do recall many excellent matches though.
2econd Wrestling started interestingly enough with a tournament to crown a champ and that tourney included women. Billie Starkz was one of those women and she has been the champ since winning it at an early show. Once again, Rabbi Fine isn't bragging about having a woman champ. He is letting her wrestling do the talking.
I have not been this excited about a new wrestling company in a long time. While the wrestlers get applause at the shows, and deservedly so, credit must also go to Rabbi Fine for organizing the shows and keeping the company moving forward. I know those challenges and I know how hard Rabbi Fine is working. It is still early in their existence, but the signs are great for a bright future.
Follow 2econd Wrestling on Facebook and other social media platforms to get updates and news. Check back here for my recurring coverage of 2econd Wrestling.

Resistance Pro Memories: Lucy Mendez

Lucy Mendez was one of my favorites at Resistance Pro Wrestling. While she made several appearances there, she wasn't a regular really. I did have a chance to interview her a few times, including On the Beat With Lucy Mendez
Lucy was always good for a big smile, especially when talking about her beloved St. Louis Cardinals. She was a real fan, too. She knew her baseball!
As far as I can tell, she is retired from wrestling. I know she is happily married to Ace Steel, a former wrestler, who has also worked as an agent and trainer.
As I have written, RPro did not end well, but I had a lot of great times and still have fun memories. I got to meet and know some really col people, like Lucy.

Jayson Maples and Heroes and Legends Wrestling Fan Fest

Jayson Maples debuted Heroes and Legends Wrestling Fan Fest several years ago. Fast forward to May 13, Jayson presents Heroes and Legends XIX in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.
I have attended a couple Heroes and Legends events and they are a blast. I would have gone more often, but distance and schedules prevented me, much to my disappointment. It's not form indifference though. I plan on returning when I can.
Jayson is a great guy. A man of deep faith and spirit, Jayson is not shy about declaring his thoughts on social media. He isn't shy about showing his tremendous weight loss in the last few years. I am proud and happy for Jayson for both of these and for his convention, of course.
Among those appearing this year are Dr. Tom Prichard, Wolfie D and Jamie Dundee, Brian Pillman Jr.., Heath, Kevin Sullivan, Henry Godwin and so many more.  There will be plenty of independent wrestlers, too, along with a full night of wrestling.
Go to HeroesandLegendsProWrestling.com for more info. Also follow Heroes and Legends on social media and check here for updates.

On the Beat With Jody Davis

Yesterday, I had the thrill of interviewing Jody Davis, former catcher for the Chicago Cubs and a key part of their magical 1984 season. Now residing in Georgia, Jody was kind enough to share his thoughts on his career, bringing me back to my younger days of watching him at Wrigley Field.
Jody was originally drafted by the New York Mets in 1976. While still in the minor leagues, Jody was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals after the 1979 season. Almost exactly one year later, the Cubs drafted him from St. Louis in the 1980 Rule 5 Draft.
In 1981, the Cubs made Jody the starting catcher, a position he would hold until being traded to the Braves late in the 1988 season. During his time with the Cubs, Jody was named to two All-Star teams and won a Gold Glove. A key part of the 1984 National League East champion Cubs, Jody earned a special place in the hearts of Cubs fans.
Jody gave the Cubs their best and most consistent catcher since Randy Hundley. He was easily the best Cubs catcher of my lifetime and second only to Hall of Famer Gabby Hartnett in the storied history of the franchise.
Late in the 1988 season, the Cubs were moving into a new era and traded Jody to the Braves. Although the Braves were his home state team, Jody and his legion of fans hated to see him leave Chicago.
Jody retired after the 1990 season, ending his career with 877 hits, 127 home runs, 490 RBI's and 364 runs scored. He cherishes his time with the Cubs and is enjoying life hunting and fishing.
Recently, Jody jumped on social media with a Facebook page and twitter account. Once I saw his pages, I reached out asking for an interview.
The interview started with Jody discussing baseball cards, including a funny note on his first and an interesting bit of trivia on his favorite card. Jody talked about his time with the Cubs, the fun of the 1984 season, Harry Caray singing about him and leaving the team. He also talked about what the Cubs Hall of Fame would mean to him, joining the world of social media, connections with former teammates and more.
Clearly the Cubs Hall of Fame would mean a lot to Jody, but it would also be a huge deal for Jody's fans. Jody's 121 HR's are second only to Hartnett among Cubs catchers. Jody and Hartnett were also the only Cubs catchers at the time to surpass 20 homers in a season more than once. In 1984, Jody finished in the top ten in MVP voting. In the postseason, Jody hit .389 with a 1.202 OPS. His 4.2 WAR in 1986 is ninth all-time among Cubs catchers.
I hope Jody knows how exciting this was for me. I am a writer and interviewer, but I will always be a fan. I greatly appreciate Jody's time with the Cubs, especially the 1984 season.
As I told Jody in the interview, one of my prized possessions is a game-used bat of his. While at DePaul, I took the el train after classes to attend games. (Tickets were a lot cheaper and easier to get back then.) I befriended the bat boy and asked for Jody's cracked bat, which he gave me. (The sports memorabilia craze hadn't hit yet.) It was a beautiful black bat used by Jody in a game. How cool was this!?
Fast forward about 40 years and here I was interviewing one of my favorites. It was an amazing and surreal experience for which I am very grateful.
I thank Jody for his time and consideration and for fantastic memories from his career. I also thank Patty for facilitating the interview.
To get all the info and updates from Jody, follow @JodyDavisMLB on twitter and Jody Davis on Facebook. Check TheEveryDayFan.com for more sports coverage.

Absurdities: Memes

Absurdities is a recurring series in which I feature dumb things I see.

Today's absurdity is a generic meme. I've seen it as just text, with pictures and in various forms. Any way it appears, it is still absurd.
The sentiment is positive and good. Keep getting up. Don't let life's punches keep you down.
The problem is simple math. If you get knocked down seven times, you only have to get up seven times. What's with the extra time getting up?
I think it was someone trying to be clever, maybe too clever and the result is absurd. Fall down seven times. Stand up seven times!

Friend Encounters: Taya Hanson and Henry G

Friend Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

I never met Henry Gee in person, but we became friends through his former website Global Women's Sports Radio. Henry was a hustler in the best ways. He tried various opportunities, one of which was GWSR.
He actually recruited me to write for GWSR. Eventually I joined and later even became the editor for the site. It was a role I really enjoyed. I got to write about women's sports. I got to give women's sports much-needed exposure. I also got to hone my editor skills.
Unfortunately, Henry ultimately decided to move on to other things. With GWSR gone, we have drifted apart. I do miss our chats about women's sports and life in general. Who knows? Our paths can cross again at some point. Journalism, especially sports media is a funny field.
If Henry reads this, thank you, buddy. It was a good run while it lasted.
You can check my GWSR interviews on the Johngy's Beat YouTube channel. You can also follow Henry on the GWSR Facebook page.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #630 Lauren Chamberlain & Candace Parker

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a weekly feature in which I create virtual trading cards for celebrities wearing sports jerseys. With the MLB season upon us, I start marching through all team alphabetically.

Born in California, Lauren Chamberlain was a star infielder at the University of Oklahoma. She went on to play professionally for the USSSA Pride. Now she is Commissioner of Women's Professional Softball (WPF), a four team league that debuted last season. Lauren earned her Celebrity Jersey Card while sporting Reggie Jackson's No. 44 jersey.

A native of St. Louis, Missouri, Candace Parker grew up in the Chicago area, before starring on the hardwood at the University of Tennessee. Candace went on to play 13 seasons with the WNBA Los Angeles Sparks, before joining her home area Chicago Sky for two seasons, including one championship season. Sadly for Chicago fans, Candace moved onto the Las Vegas Aces for this season. For her Celebrity Jersey Card, Candace repped a Los Angeles Angels jersey.

Happy Birthday, Nancy!

Today is the birthday of my eldest sister. We lovingly call her the matriarch of the family, much to her dismay.

As you will see in 12 more days, I am lucky to have two greatest sisters. I freely admit I would be lost without them.

Nancy is much more than just a sister. She's a mentor, psychologist, confidant and more. She also has been known to make a great batch of chocolate chip cookies.

I love the picture below. Nancy and her friends went to the Singing Pandas Asian Restaurant & Bar and met Asian Elvis. I especially love how Nancy is right next to AE. That's a great move, because if the picture gets reposted or even goes viral, she will always be there, whereas others could be cut out. It is a veteran celebrity hound move! It was also a great way to get featured here, on the 316th best source for pop culture nuggets.

I know Nanc will be celebrating out west, although probably not with AE again. Still, I hope she has a fantastic day and I toast her from here. Happy birthday, Nancy, I love you!

On the Beat With Staci Layne Wilson

I am always looking for interesting people to interview and I found a fascinating person in Staci Layne Wilson. An author, filmmaker and more, Staci discussed her entertainment parents, her start, finding her own path and more, including her latest projects.

The interview is on the Johngy's Beat YouTube channel at On the Beat With Staci Layne Wilson. I wrote about the interview on the Chicago Patch.  I'd like to use this space to tell my thoughts on the interview and Staci.

When I first saw Staci on social media, I was intrigued by her story. I did some research and really became fascinated by her books and movies. I contacted her about the interview and she graciously accepted my request. It came together very easily and quickly.

Staci is the daughter of Don Wilson, a founding member of the Ventures, and Buni Bacon, a model and actress. I didn't know about her mom, but I was a fan of the Ventures and of her documentary on the Hall of Fame band. I had no idea Staci had so many interesting books and films.

She has done so much in her professional career and her personal life, I couldn't possibly cover it all. I hoped to skim the surface a bit and give everyone a look at her. The interview flew by and I hated to see it end. She had such a good vibe about her. I learned a lot in the interview and my appreciation grew even more.

For more info on Staci, go to StaciLayneWilson.com and Rock-n-Roll-Nightmares.com. Find her books on Amazon and Audible.

Dinah Manoff and Golden-Con 2023 Recap

Picture it...
Chicago... 2023.
Three Men come together with a dream to assemble a celebration of one of the greatest television shows of all time.
People came from all over the world to commune with one another with a common love for all that made this show great.
There was cosplay, trivia, special guests, merchandise and more!
Those three men were Zack Hudson and Brendan and Brad Balof.
And the event was called... Golden-Con 2023: "Thank You For Being A Fan."
After attending this celebration of “The Golden Girls,” I couldn't help but slip into a little Sophia Petrillo while introducing my recap. Despite my friends being bigger fans, I totally got swept up in the nostalgia.
Following its successful debut last year, Golden-Con returned to Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk. The organizers did a great job of offering exhibits and events for every level of fan. I was mostly interested in meeting actors from the show or its spinoff “Empty Nest,” while my friends enjoyed seeing inside jokes, wardrobes and recreated sets.
I was very excited about meeting all of the celebrities. I will feature each here in the future, but today Dinah Manoff takes center stage.
I first saw Manoff in television's "Soap," a vastly underrated show. Also on her impressive resume is "Grease," and of course "The Golden Girls" and "Empty Nest." She was promoting The Real True Hollywood Story of Jackie Gold, her book.
Dinah was as sweet as could be, as were the other actors. As I talked with her, I kept thinking how surreal it was to be standing next to "Elaine" (or Marti or Carol lol). What a pleasure it was chatting with her.
One of the other highlights was Dr. Melinda McClanahan's presentation about her sister Rue, who played Blanche. It was informative, heart-warming, and entertaining. That was just one of the many special events during the convention.
For all the fascinating things at Golden-Con, my biggest takeaway might have been from the crowd. There was a palpable sense of happiness and warmth. Everyone was in such a great mood. In a room filled with strangers, everyone felt like family.
I resisted the urge to break into the iconic theme song, although I did hum it a little at times. Seriously though, I don't think anyone would have complained, because everyone was simply having a wonderful time. Some of us even had a slice or two of cheesecake.

Thank you to Zack, Brad and Brendan for their hospitality. I look forward to future Golden-Con events. For more info, go to ThankYouForBeingAFan.com and follow Golden-Con on social media.

The Johngy "OR ELSE" Podcast - Ep. 59: Lauren Traut

On the latest episode of The Johngy "OR ELSE" Podcast, Tommy Else and I interviewed Lauren Traut, managing editor at Patch. This interview was about a decade in the making.
I first met Lauren at a south suburban summer fest. She was promoting the Patch news sites. As a longtime veteran of such fests during my many years at Lerner Newspapers, I immediately had respect for Lauren.
I had recently started contributing to the Patch and Lauren was kind enough to give me a tshirt. I started following Lauren's work with the Patch.
I quickly learned how passionate she was for journalism and her communities. Her dedication was impressive. She was a credit to the world of journalism.
I approached Tommy about asking Lauren to join us for an episode, I mentioned her deep love of real journalism. In an age where fast news and superficial stories are the rage, Lauren is old school in all the best ways. She entrenches herself into every community she covers. She earns respect from her readers and the folks she covers, even when they have different opinions. Tommy quickly agreed. We wanted to share Lauren's story with our audience.
Although I briefly chatted with Lauren at that summer fest years ago and occasionally exchanged comments on social media, I never had the opportunity to really talk to her about what drives her. We talked about her start, her career, the current state of media and much more. We also asked Lauren about horses and the Illini, two of her other passions.
Lauren is what every journalist should strive to be. Actually, she is what I wanted to be so many years ago, before my career got sidetracked elsewhere. Tommy and I thank Lauren for her time and consideration. We also thank her for doing what she does so well.
You can watch the episode on our YouTube channel at The Johngy "OR ELSE" Podcast - Ep. 59: Lauren Traut. Also, check out Lauren on the Patch

Kevin Sullivan at Squared Circle Expo 2021

Squared Circle Expo III happens in a couple days (April 7-8) in Indianapolis, IN. When the Squared Circle Expo debuted in 2021, Kevin Sullivan was among the wrestlers I most wanted to see.
Debuting in 1970, Sullivan carved out an excellent and underrated career in professional Wrestling. While he had some nice runs in the big companies like WWE and WCW, he did not win a major singles title at those places, although he did win a few tag team titles. Elsewhere, he capture plenty of gold.
As great as some of the characters he portrayed, I think Sullivan's greatest strength is his mind. He had a ton of great ideas over the years. His run in Florida was red-hot, creating quite a stir.
I met Sullivan many years ago and a few times since, but I never pass on a chance to see "the Taskmaster." Despite his sometimes Satanic character, Sullivan is actually an extremely well-spoken and friendly guy.
Sullivan will be at SCX III along with plenty of other wrestling legends will be. At last count, there were more than 50 announced wrestling superstars.
For more info, go to SquaredCircleX.com. Also follow here for my recurring coverage.

Friend Encounters: Megan Wiggins and Tony Feddeler

Friend Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends meeting celebrities.

When Tony Feddeler and I attended Athletes Unlimited softball games last season, Megan Wiggins was one of our top targets to meet again. A former player for the now defunct National Pro Fastpitch Chicago Bandits, Wiggins remains a favorite here many years after she was traded to the USSSA Pride. While her playing for AU in Rosemont isn't exactly a homecoming, it is still awesome seeing her play here every game of the season.

I don't know if Wiggins will return for another season with AU, but we hope so. Tony and I are now season-ticket holders and we really want to "get Wiggy with it" again.

Go to AUProSports.com for more info on all of the AU sports leagues. In addition to softball, they have volleyball, lacrosse and basketball. AU SB 2023 returns to Rosemont, Illinois in August.

Celebrity Jersey Card #629 Becky Lynch & Alexa Bliss

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a weekly feature in which I create virtual trading cards for celebrities wearing sports jerseys. With the MLB season upon us, I start marching through all team alphabetically.

Rebecca Quin was born in Limerick, Ireland, where she made her wrestling debut. A severe head injury in 2006 derailed her career for several years, but she returned in 2012, signing with the WWE as Becky Lynch. Since then, she is one of the most popular and successful wrestlers in the company. She is also the wife of fellow WWE wrestler Seth Rollins and the two have a young child. Lynch completed the Celebrity Jersey Cards Grand Slam while repping the New Jersey Devils. Lynch is wearing a #11 jersey, most notably worn by HOFer Brendan Shanahan, although I believe her jersey is an Irish Lass one. I'd take her over Shanahan any day.
Born in Columbus, OH, Alexis Kaufman rose to fame in the WWE as Alexa Bliss. Like Lynch, Bliss is a multi-time WWE champ. She is also a big fan of Disney and cosplay, a hobby which landed her on a few special edition Celebrity Jersey Cards. Although previously appearing on a CJC repping her hometown Columbus Blue Jackets, Bliss earned this one by donning a Las Vegas Golden Knights weater while appearing with Chance, their Gila monster mascot.

Pinfalls: WWE WrestleMania 39

With WWE WrestleMania dominating this weekend, my podcast partner Tommy Else and I are back with Pinfalls. Tommy and I analyze the 13 matches and make our predictions.

WrestleMania 39 takes place today and tomorrow at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. As always, it will air on the Peacock Network beginning with pre-show coverage today at 5 p.m. CST.

The matches are:

WWE United States Championship

Austin Theory (c) vs. John Cena

Seth “Freaking” Rollins vs. Logan Paul

Six-Woman Tag Match

Becky Lynch, Trish Stratus & Becky Lynch vs. Damage CTRL (Bayley, Dakota Kai & Iyo Sky)

Brock Lesnar vs. Omos (with MVP)

WWE Raw Women's Championship

Bianca Belair (c) vs. Asuka

WWE SmackDown Women's Championship

Charlotte Flair (c) vs. Rhea Ripley

WWE Intercontinental Championship-Triple Threat

Gunther (c) vs. Sheamus vs. Drew McIntyre

Hell in a Cell

Edge vs. “The Demon” Finn Balor

Women's WrestleMania Showcase Fatal Fourway Tag Team

Liv Morgan & Raquel Rodriguez vs. Natalya & Shotzi vs. Ronda Rousey & Shayna Baszler vs. Chelsea Green & Sonya Deville

Men's WrestleMania Showcase Fatal Fourway Tag Team

Braun Strowman & Ricochet vs. The Street Profits (Angelo Dawkins & Montez Ford) vs. Alpha Academy (Chad Gable & Otis) vs. The Viking Raiders (Erik and Ivar with Valhalla)

Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship

The Uso's (c) vs. Sami Zayn & Kevin Owens

Rey Mysterio vs. Dominik Mysterio

Undisputed WWE Universal Championship

Roman Reigns (c) vs. Cody Rhodes

Although we look forward to WrestleMania and think there are some great matches, Tommy and I would still like to see it returned to a one day event. All wrestlers should be at their best, but some of these matches are more worthy of main-eventing a Raw episode.

As usual, I won't give awaay spoilers, but Tommy and I disagree on a few match outcomes. For the year, I have a slight edge on Tommy, as I am 8-2, while he is 7-3.

Watch our predictions on at Pinfalls: WWE WrestleMania on YouTube and make your own. Then sit back and enjoy two long days of wrestling action and see how we all do. Check TheEveryDayFan.com for the WrestleMania recap and other wrestling coverage.
