Appreciating "The Ego" Robert Anthony

It had been way too long since I saw "The Ego" Robert Anthony wrestle. I got spoiled from working with him in Resistance Pro Wrestling many years ago.

Back then, I was new to the Chicago independent wrestling scene. I quickly learned Ego was among the best. In our few years together at RPro, I never saw anything less than an excellent match from Ego. I have often said he has no weakness. He's great on the mic and in the ring, either as  agood guy or a baddie.

I also learned he is a quality person. He helped my young cousin through a difficult time. Ego did this for other youngsters, too. Ego is a teacher by trade, but he impacts folks outside of the classroom, too.

My pal Tony had never seen Ego wrestle. When I saw he was appearing at AAW Pro in Berwyn and our schedules allowed it, I knew we had to go.

Ego was the first person we saw when entering and he greeted us warmly. Later we saw him in a tag team match. While I would have preferred a singles match to see more of Ego, he had several moments in the match that reminded me of classic Ego.

Ego was also running a Toys for Tots toy drive. He filled one big box before the nght had barely started.

Ego started his own wrestling company based out of the Joliet area. Some day I hope to make one of his shows.

I am grateful for my RPro experience because of people like Ego. It has been great watching him wrestle, but even better knowing him and calling him friend..

"The Ego" Robert Anthony Loves Johngy's Beat

"The Ego" Robert Anthony was one of the first wrestlers I noticed on the Chicago wrestling scene. Ego stood out from the others, because he had it all. He was excellent in the ring and on the mic.

I had the pleasure of working with Resistance Pro Wrestling during his time with the company. He was a great champ and was voted to the Mt. Rushmore of RPro by listeners of The "Or Else" Podcast. I continued to follow Ego after he left RPro, but I only saw him wrestle a few times. 

A few weeks ago, Ego posted on social media that he would be wrestling for All Elite Wrestling. Of course, I tuned in. He has made several appearances since then.

I don't know if this is a short run or a longer stint, but either way I am happy for Ego. He deserves the spotlight. He works incredibly hard at his craft and he remains one of my favorites.

Recently, Ego sent a shout out to Johngy's Beat, from his basement gym. I appreciate the kind words. It's typical Ego, on point, crisp and probably in one take. UIt brought me back to good times at RPro.

Friend Encounters: Jon Moxley and Robert Anthony

Friend Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

"The Ego" Robert Anthony was one of the first independent wrestlers I really noticed. To this day, he remains one of my favorites.

I had the pleasure of watching him up close during his time with Resistance Pro Wrestling. Ego is the total package. He is technically sound in the ring and he is excellent on the mic.

Last week, Ego had a match with longtime friend and current All Elite Wrestling champ Jon Moxley on AEW's Dark show. Later, Ego went on twitter to demand a match with Brian Cage, another challenger for Moxley's title. AEW officials granted that request and Ego will wrestle Cage tomorrow on Dark.

If you follow Ego on social media (and you should), you will see how much this whole experience has met to him. Ego has wrestled on the big stage before, but these are high profile matches with his buddies in the #2 wrestling company in the U.S.

I'm really happy for Ego. He has worked hard his whole career. I don't think I am breakling kayfabe to state he is a father of two and a teacher and he is seemingly great at both roles.

His old buddy Moxley is having a solid run as AEW's champ, after several years of success in the WWE. He was one of the first biggest names to leave the WWE for AEW. His connection with Ego goes way back 10+ years to their days in a Chicago fed.

I am proud to have witnessed many awesome Ego matches. I ranked him as the all-time face of RPro. I have enjoyed watching his matches in AEW and I am looking forward to seeing him wrestle Cage.

Friendly Encounters: Robert Anthony and Noah Sanchez

Friend Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities. With Wizard World returning to Chicago August 22-25, this is a special Wizard World edition.

Several years ago, my young cousin Noah Sanchez joined the Johngy's Beat crew for some interviews at Wizard World. One of the first stars he landed was then-Resistance Pro heavyweight champ "The Ego" Robert Anthony.

I admit I am biased. Ego is one of my favorite Chicago wrestlers and I love my cousin. Besides that though, the interview was just magic. These two had great chemistry. The interview can be found at On the Beat With The Ego Robert Anthony at Wizard World. The pair recreated the fun in several other interviews which can be found on the Johngy's Beat YouTube channel.

Ego is without a doubt, one of the most talented wrestlers. I see no weaknesses in the ring or on the mic. The only criticism I have ever heard is that he can sometimes be aloof or in his own world. In the world of pro wrestling, that might not even be a bad thing.

If I am to judge Ego by my dealings with him, I have absolutely nothing bad to say. He has always been great to me and my crew.

It's not every celebrity who would give his time to a teenager for an interview. Not only did Ego give his time, he was on his game during the interviews, connecting with Noah and giving the audience a highly entertaining interview.

I greatly appreciate the time and attention Ego gave Noah at the time. It might have stemmed from Ego's background in teaching or maybe Ego is just really a nice guy, under his wrestling persona. Either way, such an effort needs to be applauded.

Noah has grown a lot since these days. He's a fine young adult and will do wonderful things in life. I know he had fun doing these interviews and we all had fun watching them.

These were good times at RPro. These were times when we were all one big family. The Ego-Nah interviews will always make me smile.

The "Or Else" Podcast Episode 32: "The Ego" Robert Anthony

The newest episode of The "Or Else" podcast is live now and it is special for multiple reasons. Through a big assist from Dick Griffiths II, "The Ego" Robert Anthony is our guest. Ego did not make it to the Or Else studio, but we got the interview recorded on Skype and it is now available in video form.

Ego was one of my first favorite wrestlers on the independent scene and he remains one of the best I have ever seen. He is gold on the mic and in the ring. While he is technically not an RPro original (he was not there for the first show), he was the face of the company and the champ for a long stretch.

On a personal level, he was always cool with me. He was always good for an interesting interview, whether it was at at an RPro show or Wizard World Comic Con. Ego is a big fan of comics, as you could see in On the Beat with Robert Anthony at Wizard World 2014.

On an even more personal level, Ego talked to the teenage son of one of my friends, when he was having bullying issues. To keep it private, I won't mention too many details, but Ego took time to talk to this young man on a few occasions. It made a difference and we all appreciated Ego's effort. Several other members of the RPro family also volunteered to talk to this kid and many did reach out to him. I am grateful for everyone involved.

I told this story in a pre-show meeting back in the day. I felt Ego needed to be recognized. It was one example of what RPro meant to people. C Red's RPro Positive Outreach Program reached and helped hundreds of kids, but there were also lots of individual stories like mine with Ego, involving RPro talent helping others.

The picture below is from one of my favorite RPro interviews. Tommy (Eric St. Vaughn) had just won the tag titles (with Brady Pierce as Body Magic). RPro co-owner Gabe Baron joined the interview early in it, followed by Marshe Rockett and Ego. It was a bit out of character for Ego, in that he often was a bit of a loner. This interview represents Ego at his best.

This interview also represents one of the last real high points in the history of RPro. Things were going great. Everyone was happy. The vibe was electric.

Things would change drastically soon. Billy Corgan left the company and many followed. I didn't think Ego left because of Billy (like so many others did), but you can find out his reasons on the Or Else Podcast interview Tommy and I did with him.

Congrats to Ego!

Over the years, I have seen hundreds of wrestlers on the independent scene. Robert "The Ego" Anthony stood out from the first time I saw him and he continues to be one of my favorites.

I have had the pleasure of watching him up close, during his time in Resistance Pro Wrestling. I still think he was the best champ in their history and he certainly deserves a spot on their Mt. Rushmore (as I have previously discussed).

Ego has it all. He is a pro inside and outside of the ring. I have always said he should be in the WWE.

Actually, he did spend time in the WWE developmental system. I think it has been more Ego

s decision not to be there now, but that's just my guess.

A couple weeks ago, while WWE Raw was live in Chicago, I was pleasantly surprised when I saw Ego enter the ring. It was more an entertainment segment than actual match, but I was happy for Ego, especially since it is his hometown and also since his young son got to see him on television.

Ego has some detractors for various reasons, but I can't say a bad thing about him. He always treated me well. He even went above and beyond to talk to a friend's young son during a rough time for  the kid. I will always appreciate him for that.

I don't know if this will be Ego's last time in the big spotlight. I do hope to see him more on the indty scene in Chicago. I know if Ego is on the card, I will be treated to one great match.

Thank you, Ego, for years of entertainment and for helping a teen in need. Congrats on another oment on the big stage!

The "Or Else" Podcast-Episode 9: Snaked By Jake

Through fan interaction with The "Or Else" podcast, someone asked us about a Mt. Rushmore of Resistance Pro Wrestling.  Host Tommy Else and I thought it was an interesting topic, especially since RPro had ended, thereby creating a definite period of time.

We tweaked the question a bit to allow only talent on the active roster.  We figured it would be more interesting to eliminate other RPro people like Billy Corgan, Jacques and Gabe Baron, managers, timekeepers and the rest of the folks who helped build RPro, but never competed.

We also eliminated tag teams, although we did create a Mt. Rushmore of tag teams.  That would have to be Soul Touchaz, Lockup, Body Magic and .  I think there r

To be fair, we also created a Mt. Rushmore for managers.  Warden Myers, C Red, Colonel Corgan and Justin King were our choices and again, I don't think there can be much of an argument against these four.

The wrestler Mt. Rushmore, however, isn't nearly as clean cut.  A lot of talented wrestlers have stepped into an RPro ring.  When Billy left, there was a big turnover of talent, with a lot of new wrestlers appearing.  This creates interesting possibilities for choices.

There are no wrong answers.  Everyone has their own opinions and reasons.  Some voters went with the builders of RPro.  Others went for title success.  Some went for longevity.

As of this writing, the top four vote-getters (with the percentage of ballots naming them) are "The Ego" Robert Anthony (80%), Crazy Mary Dobson and Eric St. Vaughn/Tommy Else (^60%) and Sugar Dunkerton (46%).  Those happen to be my four choices.  My humble co-host Tommy agrees with three of those choices, but replaces himself with Cobra (who was probably my next in line).

The voting is still open.  There certainly can be change depending on the future votes.  I think Ego is safe, but you never know.

As fun as the Mt. Rushmore discussion is, there is much more on the newest episode of The "Or Else" podcast.  In Episode 9: Snaked By Jake, Tommy talks about the evening Jake "The Snake" Roberts appeared on an RPro show.  He also talks about his first match, which was set up by Mancow Muller.  We are guestless on this episode, but we packed in a lot of great stuff.

Ode to Ego

I have been covering Chicago independent wrestling for several years.  It didn't take long for "The Ego" Robert Anthony to make a big impression on me.

I first saw Ego wrestle as Egotistical Fantastico in PCW.  He left the area for the WWE for a while, but returned to the Chicago scene by 2009.  I got to see him up close and got to know him when we were both with Resistance Pto.

Ego worked very hard and became the champ there.  I watched his climb to the top and appreciated all he did to get there.

I also saw Ego do a lot outside the ring, too.  On a personal note, he helped a troubled teen I know.  He went above and beyond.

Unfortunately, Ego left RPro as did several others in late 2014.  I miss Ego.  He was arguably RPro's best champ.  He was gold on the mic and in the ring.  I never had a bad interview with him either.

Like in any company, people move on and you lose touch.  That's life.  I still see Ego occasionally at various comic cons.  He doesn't wrestle anywhere as much these days and I miss seeing him in action.  He was special in the ring.  He has the "it" factor.

I will always be grateful for his giving time to my young friend.  I will always remember his great matches, especially at RPro.  I will fondly recall his goofiness, too.

Ego is an original.  He easily is more entertaining than most of the wrestlers in the big companies.

I doubt he will ever read this, but I hope he does.  He should know already that I respect what he's done and who he is.  Anyone who knows him would say the same.  This is for all others who might not know.

Thank you Ego.  I hope I have not seen the last of you in or out of the ring.

On the Beat with "The Ego" Robert Anthony of Resistance Pro at Wizard World

My coverage of Wizard World Chicago 2014 began today with an unexpected interview.  I ran into "The Ego" Robert Anthony of Resistance Pro wrestling, who was accompanied by Diz.
Ego is right in the middle of the tag team title situation at RPro.  He was tag team champion with Jocephus Brody, but his wedding and honeymoon kept him away from RPro last month.  Jocephus successfully defended the titles with Eve.  Who exactly are tag team champs?  We will find out on Sunday at "The Real Thing."
Diz contributed a bit during this interview, but I could not understand him.  Ego's "translations" seemed a bit suspect to me.  Ego claimed Diz was badmouthing JohngysBeat.com.
In any case, Ego was just one of several friends and celebrities I encountered on Day One at Wizard World.  The rest of the weekend promises to be even better.  You never know who you might see.  I even saw another guy in a Johngy shirt.  Go figure!
Wizard World runs through Sunday.  My advice is always to go before Sunday.  That way, on Sunday, you can go to "The Real Thing" and find out what is happening with the tag team scene at RPro.

Friendly Encounters: Noah Sanchez and "The Ego" Robert Anthony

This is a weekly series about friends meeting celebrities.

I really love the picture below.  It just blows my mind looking at it and thinking about all that it represents.  It is past, present and future.
Noah is my first cousin's grandson.  We have all reconnected a bit over the last few years.  Noah is growing up to be a fine young man.  He's smart, funny and just a great kid.  At least I think I can still call him a kid (but not for long).
Robert Anthony (aka "The Ego") is one of my favorite wrestlers and truly a nice guy (at least outside of the ring).  I have seen Ego work very hard at his craft and rise through the ranks to become one of the elite wrestlers on the RPro roster.  He is that good.
Noah and Ego have developed a bit of a friendship.  Noah has interviewed him twice and has talked to him a few other times.  It is heartwarming to see and I am proud that I had a hand in putting them together.
So there it is.  The past, the present and I am sure they will connect in the future and I will be there watching, especially since it will probably be at a Resistance event.

On the Beat with Resistance Pro Wrestling at "The Battle Rages On"

Last month's Resistance Pro event was "The Battle Rages On' at St. Francis de Sales high school.  It was a new venue for R Po, but not for me.  I grew up in the shadows of SFDS and my sisters went there.  For some reason, I chose Mt, Carmel, but I digress.

R Pro blew the roof off of SFDS with another great night of action.  I had my chair stolen twice (opnce by Mickie Knuckles and once by Jocephus Brody).  My young cousins loved the action and interaction all night long.

Young Noah even got into the action a bit, by conducting a few locker room interviews.  Noah did some interviews for JohngysBeat back at Wizard World in August of 2013, but these were his first at R Pro.

Noah interviewed the ever-interesting team of Team I.O.U., Nick Iggy and Kerry Awful).  That interview was interrupted by "The Ego" Robert Anthony (whom Noah had interviewed at WW).  Chris Castro also entered the scene, but did not actually get interviewed.  Instead, he sort of popped in and out of the conversation.  If this all sounds confusing, it's just part of the standard fun at R Pro.

Prior to these locker room interviews, I had the pleasure of getting the returning John Skyler for our first interview.  I also got Sugar Dunkerton for teh first time without his Warden Myers on hand.

Lastly, once again, Jesse Corgan avoided me.  This time he even was rude to my cousin.  Does Jesse have a heart?

The next R Pro show is "Don't Tread" on Friday.  R Pro is going back to th barn in Willowbrook.  I look forward to another great night of wrestling action and fun.

 

Friendly Encounters: Robert Anthony Meets Jim Cornelison

This is a weekly feature about my friends who have met celebrities.

I am going with some hockey-wrestling symmetry here.  Please bear with me.
Hockey season is back and that means Jim Cornelison is back.  Nobody belts out the National Anthem like Cornelison.  When the Hawks won the Stanley Cup championship, Cornelison got a ring.
It is always wrestling season.  Few people belt their opponents like Resistance Pro Wrestling's "The Ego" Robert Anthony.  When he won the R Pro championship, Ego got a title belt.
Both men are great at what they do.  Both are popular at their regular events and as special guests at other events.
Ego is a big Blackhawks fan and Cornelison is a wrestling fan.  Their worlds crossed at a wrestling event last November.  I happened to be at the same event and met both men.
I love the photo below.  I am pretty sure neither men knew I was taking their picture, but I saw a JohngysBeat.com opportunity and I took it.  Two champs?  How could I pass on this?
As champ at R Pro, Ego has met lots of celebrities (or lots of celebs have met him).  He is a great champ and I am always excited about seeing his matches.  His next match at R Pro will be October 25 in Willowbrook, IL.  R Pro's Welcome to My Nightmare promises to be a highly entertaining evening.

On the Beat with "The Ego" Robert Anthony at Resistance Pro's "Stick It To Ya"

"The Ego" Robert Anthony has come a long way since his early days in Resistance Pro wrestling (much like JohngysBeat.com has).  Despite the comment, I am in no way comparing Ego to JohngysBeat.com.  Ego is the champ!
I remember seeing Ego way back at the early shows.  He showed a lot of talent and charisma.  Since then he has worked very hard at his craft and it paid off in the form of the R Pro Heavyweight title.  Ego is coming up on one year as the champ.
Being champ is not easy, as everyone wants what he has.  Recently, things might have gotten tougher and more complicated.  At R Pro's Stick It To Ya, Team Ego lost to Team Jocephus, with Jocephus, Chris Hall and Los Angel remaining as victors.
The three men now get a shot at the title of their choosing.  Will all three request shots at Ego's title?  Will it result in a 4 way match?  Nobody knows yet, but whatever happens, I can guarantee will be interesting and Ego will be reasdy.
After the match, JohngysBeat.com's Contributor Extraordinaire Matt Parker caught up with Ego and got his thoughts on the match.  The always interesting Ego also discussed his idea for fun at the upcoming Wizard World convention.

Friendly Encounters : "The Ego" Robert Anthony Meets Billy Corgan

This is a regular series about friends who have met celebrities.

I met "The Ego" Robert Anthony at a Resistance Pro event about 18 months ago.  I watched Ego become one of the most popular wrestlers at R Pro and eventually he became the champ (a title he still holds).
Ego has been known to call the R Pro venue "the house that Ego built" and I can't really disagree.  He has consistently put on excellent matches.  His match with John Morrison was worthy of "Match of the Year" honors.  His wrestling skills in the ring seem to be ever-improving and his fanbase is ever-expanding.  Ego is gold!
Earlier this year, Ego posed with Billy Corgan, R Pro's Creative Director, at a Bulls game.  Ego is a big Chicago sprts fan and can be seen wearing various Chicago jerseys.  He is an ideal candidate for a Celebrity Jersey Card and his day will come.

Johngy, The Ego and Big Money at Resistance Pro Wrestling

On Friday January 18 (yes, just a few days away!!), "The Ego" Robert Anthony will defend his Resistance Pro Heavyweight title against Matt Hardy at "Stay Hungry" at 115 Bourbon Street in Merrionette Park, IL.  This promises to be another great night of R Pro action.
Ego won the belt in a three way match a couple months back.  He has put on some great matches in his tenure with R Pro and the fans have really responded to him.  When he proclaims the arena as "the house that Ego built," the fans wildly cheer.  He has the look, the skills and the charisma to go a long way in wrestling.
Ego is great in and out of the ring.  JohngysBeat.com interviewed him after a match in March and at Wizard World and he was very entertaining both times, along with every other time we have talked to him off the record.
It will be interesting to see who he faces and where Ego goes in 2013.  While the rest of the year is uncertain, I know where he will be this Friday...the same place I will be...the same place you should be.
Ego is the real deal and so is R Pro.  R Pro continues to provide great wrestling entertainment and with Ego at the top, R Pro will keep getting more entertainment.  Don't just take my word though.  Come out and see for yourself.

On the Beat with Resistance Pro Wrestling at Wizard World 2012

When Matt and I arrived at Wizard World 2012 for our pre-event meeting of official video bloggers, we put in our claim for the Resistance Pro Wrestling booth.  Who would be better at talking to the R Pro family than Matt and me, sort of the odd cousins of the family.  Because of our previous work with R Pro, the fine folks at Wizard World handed the R Pro duties to us.
We started off by talking to Jacques Baron, who along with brother Gabe, is the man behind Resistance.  Jacques is a cool guy who has welcomed us with open arms.  We have seen R Pro grow in so many great ways in less than a year.  Jacques is certainly responsible for a lot of that success.  Check out ResistancePro.com to learn more about this exciting wrestling organization.

A couple days ago, when we featured Sassy Stephie, we mentioned a cameo appearance by Robert Anthony.  This was Anthony's second pop-in during one of our interviews.  We have no problem with that spontaniety, but we just wanted to get him in his own interview.  After all of the matches at "A Small Deadly Space", we finally got "The Ego" one-on-one.
A veteran of 11 years, Anthony was ranked #317 on PWI's Top 500 singles wrestlers in 2011.  He has won several titles in various organizations over the years and he seems primed for a shot at the Resistance Pro title in the near future.
Anthony talks about how he got the name "Mr. Ego", wrestling for R Pro and who he would like to wrestle.  He also talks about meeting the Ultimate Warrior, one of his childhood favorites.
Anthony has the charisma, the ability and the drive to become a star in wrestling.  Despite the Ego moniker, he also has a deep respect for the sport.  Anthony is quickly developing a big and strong fan following at R Pro and you can count the staff of Johngy's Beat among his Egomaniacs!
