The Johngy By Terence Muncy

I met horror and comic book artist Terence Muncy many years ago at a convention.  Since then, I always make sure to visit his booth every time he appears at a con I'm attending.
Although his artistic creations are awesome, the multi-talented Muncy is not limited to drawing.  He has directed films, opened a special effects company, designed tshirts and much more.  The guy seems to have his wicked hand in everything.
At the recent Wizard World convention in Rosemont, Muncy gave me his version of "Johngy."  I love it.  It is certainly the most unique version any artist has ever done of Johngy.
Whenever I approach an artist about creating a version of Johngy, I give very little direction.  I want the artist to make it personal.  I don't want a bunch of the same looking pieces from different artists.  There is no "bad" versions, because it's all in the eye if that artist.
Muncy's version surprised me, yet I shouldn't be surprised at all.  If you know him and his work, you will see it is a perfect representation of his work.  You won't be seeing the Johngy for sale at any convention, but you will be able to see it hanging on my wall with all of the other cool artist renderings of Johngy!
Thank you to Terence for his cool contribution to the Art of Johngy!

Hall of Famer Denis Savard

Denis Savard is a hockey Hall of Famer and a favorite of Chicago Blackhawks fans.  Yet, I still think he is overlooked and underrated.
Savard was the third overall pick in the 1980 NHL draft.  He started his NHL career with the Blackhawks for the 1980-81 season and played for ten seasons with the Hawks.  He was traded to Montreal for Chicagoan and future Hall of Famer Chris Chelios.
Most people feel that Chicago got the better of the deal.  The trade worked out good for Savard, as the Canadiens won the Stanley Cup for the 1992-93 season.  Still, it was bittersweet, as Savard loved the Blackhawks.
The trade was interesting though.  It isn't often that two future Hall of Famers get traded for each other.  While Savard was a fan favorite, Chelios was the local kid coming home.  It worked out well for all involved, but it still was a bit odd.
Savard would return to the Blackhawks midway through the 1994-95 season and play here through the 1996-97 season, before retiring.  Chelios played in Chicago through the 1998-99 season, before signing with the Detroit Red Wings.  He retired after the 2009-10 season, with three Stanley Cup championships on his lengthy resume.
Savard returned to the Hawks as a coach, but was eventually replaced by Joel Quenneville, in a move that angered some fans.  Coach Q has guided the Hawks to three Stanley Cup championships.
While never really mistreated, Savard did experience some bumps in his three stints with the Hawks.  Throughout everything, Savard has remained a class act.
I had the pleasure of meeting him a few years back.  He stayed over his scheduled time to meet all of the fans who were there.  He patiently answered questions and talked of his great memories in Chicago.
In the 1980's, Savard brought excitement to Chicago hockey.  Thank you Mr. Savard for your hustle and achievements.  Thank you even more for always carrying yourself with dignity and class!

Friendly Encounters: Dennis Haskins and Eugene Cresto

This is a weekly series about friends who have met celebrities.

The Max, the diner frequented by the gang on tv's Saved By The Bell, has become a real thing.  Earlier this year, the Max opened on the near north side of Chicago.
My bud Eugene Cresto beat me to it again.  Not only did he visit the Max, he met Dennis Haskins (aka Mr. Belding)) there.  How cool is that?
Okay, I am a bit old to have actually been a huge fan of the show, but I appreciated it for what it was.  It was big back in the day and the Max is an iconic place, similar to Arnold's (Happy Days).
I think I either need to spy on Eugene or to hire him for the Johngy's Beat crew.  He is everywhere, meeting everyone.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #288 Richard Christy & Tom Watson

This is a regular series which attempts to combine my lifelong passion for trading cards with my semi-professional interest in celebrities.  We continue working our way alphabetically through Major League Baseball.

Richard Christy grew up in Kansas.  The "Howard Stern Show" staffer is a fan of the Royals, beer, pumpkins and Halloween.  He combines all of those on his Celebrity Jersey Card!  I love this card almost as much as Christy loves beer!
Golfer Tom Watson is a native of Kansas City, MIssouri.  Currently he is 11th in all time PGA tour wins with 39,  He shows nice form on his Celebrity Jersey Card and gets extra points for wearing a Royals cap.  Is the #62 for Billy Buckner or does it have significance to Watson?

Michael Nesmith at the Motor City Comic Con 2016

The Monkees was one of the first television shopws I remember really watching.  I had no idea of the origins, backstory, behind-the-scenes stuff.  I just knew it was a fun show with good music (yes, I later learned some of the music wasn't really them).
They have endured enough criticism over the years for silly reasons.  Why not just enjoy their music, no matter how it all came together.  Does any of that make their music less enjoyable?
Even the individual Monkees at times have bristled at the Monkees, but I also think they all came to appreciate just what it was.
Michael Nesmith was probably the least embracing of the Monkees of the four.  He did occasionally join the others for various reunion converts, but he pretty much did his own thing most of the time.
Unfortunately, there will be no more full reunions, because of the premature passing of Davy Jones.  Nesmith might have been affected the most in a way though.  He seems more accepting of the Monkees now.  Maybe he sees how fragile life is and how quickly it all goes.
I never had the pleasure of meeting Davy Jones, but thanks to the Motor City Comic Con, I have met Peter Tork and Micky Dolenz.  I really thought it would end with just those two.
I was a bit surprised to see Nesmith listed as a celebrity guest this year.  That alone would make the trip worth it.
I am happy to report that Nesmith was a fantastic guest.  He was in a great mood and seemed relaxed and happy there.  Despite my press credentials, I di not go for an interview.  I was just happy to meet him and talk to him ever so briefly.  I love the picture.  We look like three old buddies just hanging out (perhaps on a Pleasant Valley Sunday?).
Thank you to Nesmith for giving this to his fans.  Thanks to the MCCC for bringing Nesmith to his fans!

Cuzz Buzz: Jill Marie Jones at Flashback Weekend 2016

Johngy's Beat Contributor Deluxe is back with his "Cuzz Buzz."  Today he is revisiting our encounter with Jill Marie Jones at Flashback Weekend 2016.

Jill Marie Jones is probably best known for playing the character Toni Childs on the popular UPN television series Girlfriends from 2000-2006. She’s also appeared in several films including The Perfect Holiday with Queen Latifah and Major Movie Star with Jessica Simpson. The former Dallas Cowboys cheerleader also had a recurring role in the Fox supernatural series Sleepy Hollow and is currently starring in the Starz horror comedy series, Ash vs Evil Dead developed by Sam Raimi.
Johngy and I had the opportunity to chat with the beautiful and talented actress at Flashback Weekend in 2016. Jones commented how much she enjoyed playing the role of Toni, a self-centered but good natured friend to her three co-stars, Tracie Ellis Ross, Golden Brooks and Persia White.  She was nominated for best supporting actress in a comedy series by both the BET awards and the NAACP Image awards. Jones said she still keeps in touch with her co-stars but a potential reunion show appears to be mired with legal issues.
It was a pleasure to meet Jill Marie as she was gracious and friendly and appeared to truly enjoy interacting with fans at the convention.

Thank You Chicago Bandits

I have completed my third season of covering the Chicago Bandits.  Each year seems to get more enjoyable.  I cannot say enough good things about everyone involved and the organization as a whole.
It all starts with owner Bill Sokolis.  Bill's deep love for the game, the players and the fans is palpable.  He has made me feel like a member of the Bandits family right from the start.
General Manager Aaron Moore wears more hats than I even can count.  From scouting the future Bandits to overseeing all on game day, Aaron is omnipresent.  I appreciate all he has done for me, including unprecedented access.
In my other life, I own/run Arch News Agency, a printed materials distribution company.  Last winter, I talked to Aaron about distributing the Bandits schedules.  We had a good run with that this season and the plan is to do even more next season.  I believe in the Bandits and am happy to help them in any way.
There are so many other great people, such as Johnny Sole, Jason Lowenthal, Dina Kwit, Irwin Shiffman, Sam Viebrock and the interns and other staffers, including Swiper, of course.  Plus, the many great fans of Bandit Nation, like Sheri Samson, Chris Bejcek, Mark Pandocchi, CA Stevens, Tony Feddeler, the Marshall Family and more.  I must also mention the supporters from afar, like the Blank family (who sent me the cool bobblehead).  Believe me, I appreciate each person and each kind word.
I am also thankful for the many great members of the Johngy's Beat crew this season.  Jack Keenan has been a great help from day one, but he missed time this year being in the hospital.  In his absence, Peter Atsaves, Christopher Atsaves, Cuzz Gekas and Charles Alexander filled in admirably.  I couldn't have done it without them.
I am already looking forward to next season.  I am planning ultiple road trips and even more ways to cover and promote the Bandits.  I'll periodically still run news on the Bandits here during the offseason, but you can also check out ChicagoBandits.com for all the news and updates.

Honoring First Responders at Wizard World

I have been going to Wizard World for many years.  Each year, I seem to enjoy it more.  This year, without a doubt, was my favorite Wizard World.
The four day event started with a moving ceremony honoring Rosemont First Responders.  Wizard World President John D. Maatta was joined onstage by Lou Ferrigno, Jason Mewes, Ralph Macchio, Cerina Vincent and Ray Santiago.  They presented First Responders with special Captain America shields.  I was honored to pose with these true heroes.
The rest of Wizard World was a blur of celebrities,. panels, games, artists, collectibles and friends.  Over the next few weeks, I will be featuring all of the great fun I had at Wizard World.  Spoiler alert: I'll be featuring John Cena, Carrie Fisher, Michael J. Fox and more.  You don't get much bigger than those three.  Actually, the rest of the star-studded lineup, including Milo Ventimiglia, Dana Delorenzo, William Sadler, Deborah Ann Woll and morre, could be a headliner at any show, too.  Wizard World is just that jam-packed full of stars.
All of this pop culture greatness is a ton of fun, but even more impressive was the ceremony honoring the First Responders.  It wasn't necessary, but it was wonderful.  These heroes deserve recognition and what better place to do it than a convention loaded with superheroes of every sort?!
This is just one reason why I love Wizard World.  Followed by the weekend of star-gazing, cos-playing, panel-going madness, this ceremony made one stop and realize a true hero.  Better yet, it honored them in front of thousands of people.  My hat is off to Wizard World.
Stay tuned here for more coverage of Wizard World.  Lots of great times are ahead.

On the Beat With Tampa Bay Rays Coach Rocco Baldelli

While on our annual baseball trip, I had the pleasure of interviewing Tampa Bay Rays Coach (and former player) Rocco Baldelli.  From the moment I was approved for Media Credentials at Tropicana Field, Rocco was my main target.  I couldn't be happier with the outcome.
As usual Chuck Gekas and I arrived very early on game day.  Because our excitement doesn't die down, we always arrive at earliest time allowed.
The entire staff of the Tampa Bay Rays could not have been any nicer.  Each team and stadium has different rules.  This was our first trip to Tampa, but we were made to feel at home.
We checked out the clubhouse, the press box and other usual off-limits areas.  This is one of my favorite parts of being a part of the media.
Of course the best part is walking onto the field.  I am not ashamed to say that the little kid in me still loves this.  It is especially cool this early because the stadium is empty.
We watched some batting practice and talked to some members of the local media.  We saw Rocco in the outfield and waited until he headed to the dugout.
Rocco invited us into the dugout to talk to him.  He could not have been any more gracious wuth his time.  I am always grateful for the time and consideration of anyone we interview.  It is always extra special when that person talks a bit more off camera.  Rocco talked to us both before and after our interview.
In the interview, we talked about his transition from playing to coaching.  While injuries derailed his playing career,  the setbacks did not stop Rocco.
We also talked about some of his favorite cities to visit.  He had some interesting picks.  It's always refreshing when the person doesn't just pick the usual big cities.
Lastly, I had to ask him about Joe Maddon and the Cubs.  Rocco is very familiar with Maddon, of course.
I really appreciate the hospitality of the entire Rays organization.  I especially am thankful to Rocco for giving us a great experience.  It's times like this that I truly love what I do and I soak in every minute of it.

Friendly Encounters: Jon Heder and Heather Owens

Friendly Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

Heather Owens added the caption about this being a typical Sunday afternoon.  Perhaps when you are part of the Days of the Dead team, meeting celebs like Jon Heder are part of a typical Sunday (or Friday or Saturday, too).
As part of the DotD team, Heather works hard to help make everything run smoothly.  That's why I get a kick out of seeing her enjoy herself meeting any celebrity.  If this is one of her perks, it is well deserved.
The entire Days team is close-knit and hard-working.  I have never had a bad DotD experience and the few glitches I have witnessed have been cleared up quickly by Heather or one of the others.  They act fast and get results.
Whether she is DotD Heather or "Hardcore" Heather from wrestling, H2O is the best.  I encourage everyone to check out DaysoftheDead.net and get in on the fun!

Celebrity Jersey Cards #287 Kyle Busch & Regan Smith

This is a regular series which attempts to combine my lifelong passion for trading cards with my semi-professional interest in celebrities.  We continue working our way alphabetically through Major League Baseball.

Race car driver Kurt Busch was born in Las Vegas, Nevada.  The Busch family is one of the more accomplished racing families.  It looks like #78 on his jersey, which I would guess was one of his car numbers, but our other Celebrity Jersey Card star is also wearing that number.
Regan Smith is also a race car driver, but he comes from Cato, NY.  He sports #78 on his Celebrity Jersey Card.  Does anyone know if there is any significance in the #78?  I give him extra points for having his name on the scoreboard behind him.

Henry Winkler Is Really Cool

We have all heard that Henry Winkler is one of the nicest guys and I saw just how nice he is at a Hollywood Celebrity Show.  He is in a class by himself.
Winkler, best known for his role as "Fonzie" on tv's Happy Days, had one of the longest lines at the show, but nobody complained.  Winkler did his best to keep the line moving and the fans happy.
First, he stood in front of his table.  This allowed more interaction and quicker picture-taking.  He didn't have to continually move back and forth.  He chose to stand up the entire time of his appearance.
In addition to this, he also occasionally walked the length of the line thanking people for waiting and for being fans.  It was sort of a preview of actually meeting him.
Lastly, he tinually brought handicapped people to the front of the line, rather than have them struggle while standing so long in a line.  Despite being pushed back a few people during your time in line, again nobody complained.
These may seem like simple things, but simple things make a huge difference.  I have never seen a celebrity do more for the line of fans.  I'm almost surprised he didn't supply beverages and snacks.
Besides all of that, he actually tried to make your moment with him special.  Granted he couldn't spend 10 minutes with each person, but he really tried to make your moment special by connecting with you.
Itt's one thing to hear stories of how nice Winkler is.  It was just that much better to see it in person and be involved.  All I can say is that Winller truly is the coolest.

Allison Mack at Motor City Comic Con 2016

Allison Mack made her movie debut in Police Academy 6: City Under Siege, but she is probably best known for her role on tv's Smallville.  Her portrayal of "Chloe" made comic book history.
Chloe, Clark Kent's best friend, was a character created for the show.  She had not appeared in any Superman comic or other creation.  Mack's work made the character so popular she eventually was written into the actual Superman comic.  That is called changinghistory and making an impact.
At Motor City Comic Con 2016, Cuzz and I met Mack and experienced just how likeable she was.  She was adorable.  Greeting us with a huge smile and questions about our interest in her an the show, she immediately won our hearts.
Just look at that picture.  Her smile was real.  She was having fun at the show and all of her fans were, too.
I enjoyed Smallville and was a fan of Mack's, but I probably wouldn't have sought her out to meet her.  I am so glad MCCC brought her to the show though, because meeting her was a fun experience.  Now I hope I can see her again sometime.

Aiden O'Shae in Total NonStop Action

Jay Bradley is a true professional wrestler.  He isn;t a guy who jumps pff pf garages or smashes people with barbed wire bats.  He is old school and he is fun to watch.
I've known of Jay for many years.  I've known him for about 4 years, first seeing him at Resistance Pro.  I am sure he would have held RPRO gold if not for his busy wrestling schedule overseas and with TNA wrestling.  He's also the kind of wrestler who doesn't need the gold.
The world of pro wrestling is filled with politics and shenanigans.  I don't claimn to know all of what happens backstage.  I don't know why someone like Jay has never had a bigger push in the WWE or TNA.  I think he has what it takes to be a regular on the card.
I will respectfully admit I do not care for the Aiden O'Shae character.  It's not that I don't like Jay's work.  I just like Jay as Jay.  Jay doesn't need a thug gimmick.  He's an arse-kicker, lone wolf.  That is his character.  That is him.  Changing him into a stereotypical Irish street tough gimmick detracts from the talent that is Jay.  Of course, this is just my opinion.  I don't run the wrestling companies.  I am simply a fan who has an insider's view.  I see Jay and I think he deserves more exposure.
I also want to say that Jay has always treated me with nothing but respect and friendship over the years.  He is a true pro.  If you want to see an excellent wrestling match, check out Jay (or Aiden) in action!

Cuzz Buzz: William Zabka at Days of the Dead Indianapolis 2016

Johngy's Beat Contributor Cuzz Gekas is back again with his "Cuzz Buzz."  This time, he is recapping our encounter with William Zabka at the Days of the Dead Indianapolis 2016.

The Karate Kid was released in theatres in 1984 and became an instant hit with movie goers across the country. The movie remains popular to this day and spawned several sequels and even an ill-fated remake in 2010. The story revolves around Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) a teenager who relocates with his mother from New Jersey to California. There he becomes the target of bullies, until wise old Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) teaches him self-defense and some valuable life lessons. William Zabka played the role of “Johnny”, the lead antagonist of Daniel’s tormentors from the Cobra Kai Karate dojo. Johngy and I had the opportunity to meet Zabka at the 2016 Indianapolis Days of the Dead convention. He was friendly and outgoing as he discussed his role in the movie and other recent endeavors.
Although, he was an accomplished wrestler in high school, Zabka had no martial arts experience prior to the film. Through training he became proficient in the art of Tang So Do which he continues to practice even today.   Zabka talked about the climatic final fight scene between him and Macchio, choreographed in great detail by Pat Johnson, a ninth degree black belt and stunt coordinator for the film (and also the referee in that scene). These days Zabka remains active as a writer, director and independent film maker. He was nominated for an Oscar in 2004 for Best Short Film; Live Action (“Most”) and has directed music videos for several bands including Rascal Flatts. He continues to act on occasion appearing in the movie Hot Tub Time Machine and reprising the role of Johnny in several episodes of the TV series How I Met Your Mother. Many actors scoff at a single role that brought them fame, but Zabka to his credit, seems to have embraced his contribution to a classic film from over 30 years ago.

Cards That Never Were: Claude Osteen 1975 Topps

Cards That Never Were is a recurring series in which I create virtual cards for players who were missed in the original sets.  It is a concept I have borrowed from far too many to thank, but I appreciate all of them.
For this card creation, I admit to fudging the rules just a bit.  Claude Osteen did have a card in the Topps 1975 set, but I don't think he had the right one.  I'll get back to this in a moment.
Osteen made his debut in 1957, but did not pitch in the majors in 1958.  He returned in 1959 and pitched through 1975.  Osteen received cards from Topps from 1959 through 1976 with 1961 skipped, despite him appearing in 20 games.  Oddly, 1961 is not my concern.
I am focusing on 1975 Topps here.  Osteen appeared with the St. Louis Cardinals, thanks to the magical airbrush.  He had been traded from the Houston Astros late in 1974 and Topps did not get a picture of him with his new team.  These type of cards bugged me the most.  Topps should have gotten a picture of him with the Cards.
Unfortunately, by the time the card came out, Osteen had been released by the Cardinals and signed by the White Sox.  I wouldn't expect Topps to be able to put out a card of him with the Sox, since he was signed in April.  Ordinarily I wouldn't even create a virtual card considering he did not pitch for the Sox in 1974, but I bent my rules and created one.  In the "old" days, when Topps put out cards in series, this might have been possible.

Friendly Encounters: David Robertson and Glen Rylko

Friendly Encounters is a weekly series featuring my friends who have met celebrities.

I met Glen Rylko at Resistance Pro, but I am pretty sure our paths crossed at other wrestling shows and comic cons prior to RPro.  Glen has met some interesting celebrities from all sorts of areas.
Earlier this year, Glen met White Sox reliever David Robertson.  Robertson is a star relif pitcher, who has not gotten enough chances to show his abilities with the Sox.  Hopefully, Robertson will be part of the team as it rebuilds into a winner.
Glen has quite a collection of old wrestling programs and White Sox stuff, too.  I'm always happy to feature Glen here and I always enjoy seeing him in person.  He's one of the good guys.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #286 Anthony Perkins & Bill Rodgers

This is a regular series which attempts to combine my lifelong passion for trading cards with my semi-professional interest in celebrities.  We continue working our way alphabetically through Major League Baseball.

Anthony Perkins played Jimmy Piersall in Fear Strikes Out, the Piersall bio pic.  Piersall has been outspoken in his displeasure over the selection and performance of Perkins.  He felt (and probably rightly so) that Perkins just looked completely unathletic.  At least Perkins earned a Celebrity Jersey Card for his performance.
Marathoner Bill Rodgers was born in Hartford.  A connection to the Boston Red Sox might seem likely based simply on that.  Rodgers had an even bigger tie to Boston.  He won 4 Boston Marathons during his illustrious running career.  He also won many other Marathins, but Boston is the grandaddy of them all.  Even I have to admit that medal is just a tad bit more prestigious than thie Celebrity Jersey Card.

Nick Hausman at C2E2 2016

Nick Hausman is doing great things in the world of professional wrestling.  More precisely, his star is rising on the media end, as he is a featured contributor to WrestlingZone.com.
Most fans of Nick's know that he was an active performer as a manager several years ago.  In fact, we did an interview with him during his stint with Pro Wrestling Blitz.  Nick was "Rinaldo Piven" back then.  By any name, he is quite entertaining.  That interview can be found at On the Beat with Rinaldo Piven.
I reconnected with Nick earlier this year at C2E2.  He was busy coveribg all of the wrestlers and fans at the event, but he took time to chat and actually interview me.  It was very much appreciated.
Nick is a talented guy and I see big things in his future.  I'm just happy to have seen him from his early days.

Felissa Rose at Days of the Dead Indy 2016

Can Felissa Rose be more fun or be a better celebrity guest at conventions?  I ask that, instead of declaring it, because if given that challenge, I am sure Felissa would try (even though she is awesome right now).
As a teenager, Felissa starred as "Angelea" in Sleepaway Camp.  She has worked steadily every since, but many fans will always love her most from that cult classic.
At cons, Felissa will always greet you with a huge smile and possibly a warm hug.  Okay, it took a couple cons for me to join the "hug club," but she gives them out pretty freely.  She's just so warm and engaging, while also being crazy and fun.
She is one of the rare guests who I will visit each day I'm there.  Then again, I think she has crossed over into my friends list (or at least she makes me feel like I am a friend).  Either way, I cannot ask for more from Felissa.
If you have not seen Sleepaway Camp, I encourage you to see it.  Then, I encourage you all to visit Felissa at a con.  Tell her Johngy sent you.  I cannot guarantee a hug, but you won't be disappointed no matter what.

Ted Raimi at Flashback Weekend 2016

Ted Raimi has a lengthy resume on television and the big screen.  He's one of those actors when you immediately recognize and can list a ton of his work off the top of your head, but everyone might have a different list.  After I posted the picture on Facebook, one friend even commented about Raimi writing original "Joxer the Mighty" song in Xena, which I completely forgot.
Recently, I had the pleasure of meeting Raimi at Flashback Weekend.  I love celebrity guests like him.  He is sort of under-the-radar, despite his impressive body of work.  He is also very personable and funny.  He complimented me on my glasses.  I returned the sentiment about his suit.
That's another unique thing.  Not many celebs dress up like that.  It was a nice touch from a class act.
For me, Raimi was one of the real highlights of a jam-packed Flashback Weekend.  It's just one more reason why Flashback Weekend is a yearly staple on my convention list!

Cuzz Buzz: Kevin Sorbo at Wizard World Columbus 2016

Johngy's Beat Contributor Cuzz Gekas recently was back on the beat and will be giving his accounts of several celebrity encounters.  Stay tuned here for Cuzz Buzz!

Kevin Sorbo was born and raised in Mound, Minnesota and was a star athlete at Minnesota State University Moorhead before gravitating to a career in acting. He got his breakthrough role staring as the title character in the popular television series Hercules: The Legendary Journeys which ran from 1995-1999. He followed that up playing Captain Dylan Hunt, the lead role in the science fiction drama series Andromeda from 2000 to 2005. While he continues to act in a variety of projects, Sorbo has also recently appeared in a number of faith based films including What If, Soul Surfer, Abel’s Field, Jesus and Mary and the 2014 hit God’s Not Dead.
Johngy and I had the opportunity to chat with Sorbo at the 2016 Wizard World convention in Columbus, Ohio. Sorbo stated that as a Christian, he likes the idea of making faith based films provided the script and production are of high quality. He believes the caliber of these types of films has improved over the years and there’s clearly an audience wanting to see them.
Sorbo’s prior success and physical presence allow him to continue to star in action and adventure films. However, he has proven his versatility by also being successful in an entirely different genre. Sorbo is currently working on another faith based film; Let There Be Light which is scheduled for release in Christmas, 2017.
For more info on Sorbo, check out KevinSorbo.com.  You can also look for him at various Wizard World conventions around the country.

The Chica On the Beat (and Me, Too)

It's hard to believe that I actually have a promo 8x10.  Actually, I have three, but I think this one is my favorte.
I have been covering Resistance Pro wrestling from their debut several years ago.  I have been joined in the interviews by many fine folks, but none on a regular basis, until recently.
At an RPro meeting last year, someone suggested having wrestler Paloma Starr join me as the "Chica on the Beat," as a way of giving her more exposure when she wasn't wrestling.  I loved the idea and we proposed it to her.  Fortunately, she accepted the additional role.
I had no idea how Paloma would actually do with the interviews, but I'm not exactly Barbara Walters doing a special.  I figured Paloma would be fine...and she was fine.  In fact, she is quite good.  She improves and seems more comfortable each show.
Paloma continues to be one of the most popular wrestlers at RPro.  Her Beat duties do not preclude her from stepping in the ring either.  She is quite capable of pulling double duty.
While I love this promo photo, I know Paloma has her own solo pictures available for sale.  I might be the only person who gets her to sign the "Beat" promo photo below.  Whether it will be a one of a kind or not, it will always mean a lot to me.  Thanks RPro and thanks Paloma.

Friendly Encounters: Haley Reinhart and Jim Gekas

Friendly Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

This is another Friendly Encounter which I really enjoyed.  First, I am responsible for the moment.  I got passes to the Meet-and-Greet prior to the Haley Reinhart show.
Second, I also met Haley for the first time.  Haley had been on my radar and my "want" list since I heard her version of Radiohead's Creep.  It blew me away and I looked for other stuff of hers.  i quickly soaked up everything I could find from her.
I learned she is a Chicago area native and was a contestant on American Idol.  How did she not win that season?  Since then, she has performed solo, with Postmodern Jukebox and with various others, like Casey Abrams, another Idol contestance from that season.
There was an opening act, followed by Haley's band performing without her.  Haley eventually joined her band and performed for about an hour.  It was a great night of music.
At the Meet-and-Greet, Haley was very sweet and friendly.  She is simply a doll and her voice is amazing.  She is definitely my favorite singers from the current music scene.
I am glad Jimmy also enjoyed the night.  It was fun to experience all of this with him.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #285 John Calipari & Archie Griffin

This is a regular series which attempts to combine my lifelong passion for trading cards with my semi-professional interest in celebrities.  We continue working our way alphabetically through Major League Baseball.

Basketball coaching legend John Calipari was born in Pennsylvania, but has coached all over the country.  Currently (or at least at the time of this picture), he is teh Head Coach at Kentucky, which isn't all that far from Cincinnati.  Calipari might not have made the Big Red Machine, but he did make his way onto a Celebrity Jersey Card.
Two time Heisman trophy winner Archie Griffin starred at Phio State.  He went on to play for the Cincinnati Bengals.  He was born in Cincinnati looks perfectly natural on his Celebrity Jersey Card, sporting his usual #45.

Aaron Alexovich at C2E2 2016

When meandering through Artist Alley at C2E2 (Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo) this year, Aaron Alexovich's Serenity Rose banner caught my eye.  Sometimes that's all it takes to discover a new cool creator.
Serenity Rose, also known as Sera, is the title character in the story of a young witch (one of only 57 existing witches world wide).  Her powers include flight, producing ectoplasmic beings, changing form and more.  The comic follows the young adult in her hometown of Crestfallen, a town filled of oddities and bizarre creatures,  It is a story of supernatural occurrences, yet it is also a story of any normal teenager.
As usual, my description is a simple overview.  The story has much mor depth and layers.
There are three volumes and I am sure more on the way.  Aaron does an excellent job of fleshing out the character, making her human and otherly all at once.
Aaron was born in Chicago, but wisely moved to warmer California.  His first big gig was drawing for Nickelodeon's Invade Zim.
You can get more info on Aaron and his projects at HeartShapedSkull.com.  You can also follow Aaron on twitter.

On the Beat With Kristen Brown of the Chicago Bandits 2016

Today our recurring coverage of the Chicago Bandits leads us to Kristen Brown.  This interview with the rookie infielder also wraps up our regular season interview series.
Kristen starred at the University of North Carolina.  She ranks first first in UNC and ACC history in career home runs (66).  She broke the old record in grand (slam) fashion.  Kristen earned First Team All-ACC honors three times and Second Team honors once.  The Bandits selected her with the 24th overall pick in the 2016 NPF draft.
Kristen has gotten off to an excellent start with the team, on offense and defense.  She is another of the fine rookies who look to grow and develop as the team rebuilds after the loss of Tammy Williams, Amber Patton and Monica Abbott.
We talked to Kristen about her path to the Bandits and her experience with Team USA.  Kristen also talked about seeing Chicago and other fun topics.  I apologize for the occasional airplane, but that is part of the experience at the Ballpark in Rosemont.
For more info on Kristen and the Bandits, head to ChicagoBandits.com.  Also, check back here for our usual Bandits coverage.  Despite this being the last interview for the playing season, our coverage will continue throughout the National Pro Fastpitch playoffs which begin in mid-August.

John Everson at Flashback Weekend

I first met and interviewed author John Everson at a small comic con a few years ago.  That interview can be found at On the Beat With John Everson.
I admit that I did not know much about John back then.  I did my research, though, and found out he was quite an accomplished author.
Currently, he has written eight novels and four short fiction collections, as well as three mini-collections.  His primary focus is horror, dark fantasy, science fiction, fantasy fiction and the supernatural.  He won the Bram Stoker Award for Covenant (2004), along with being nominated two other times.
In December 2015, his fourth short fiction collection, Sacrificing Virgins, debuted.  It contains reprints, rarities and other interesting stories.
You can catch John at various cons promoting his books.  You should also go to JohnEverson.com for more info and updates on this talented author.
This year's Flashback Weekend is quickly approaching (August 5-7).  Check out FlashbackWeekend.com for all of the info.

Mike Carey at Flashback Weekend

On IMDB.com, he is listed as M.J. Carey, but I know the actor as Mike.  I actually met Mike through Cuzz Gekas, but I was already familiar with his work.
Mike is a local guy, who had roles in movies such as Fancypants and Chi-Raq, along with television roles on Crisis and Chicago Fire, among others.  He is carving out a career of steady work.
I had an interesting moment with Mike at last year's Flashback Weekend.  He was at the table of a pretty big name actor, when I saw him.  I inadvertantly shunned the actor to greet Mike.  I'm sure the actor was a bit surprised.  In my defense, I was just seeing someone I knew.  Oh well.
Mike is a good, hard-working guy.  I hope to see him in more and bigger roles.  I also hope to see him again at Flashback Weekend, which is this weekend in Rosemont.
The headline name this year is Malcolm McDowell.  I'll be careful not to shun him if I see Mike first.  Actually, Malcolm might laugh at that because of the fun we had at another convention in Indianapolis a couple years ago (or he might kill me).
There are many other celebrities appearing at Flashback Weekend, including Kathleen Kinmont, Adrienne King, Amy Steele, Andrew Divoff, Robert Kurtzman and more.  It promises to be another great event.
For more info, check out FlashbackWeekend.com.  I hope to see you there!

On the Beat With Coach Roman Foore of the Chicago Bandits 2016

Today, on the Chicago Bandits beat, the Johngy's Beat spotlight shines on Coach Roman Foore.  In his third season with the Bandits, Coach Roman seems as happy and dedicated as ever.
Roman has a long resume of coaching and playing.  Aside from coaching the Bandits, he has also coached on the collegiate level.  His experience serves the Bandits well.
This time, we took our interview outside.  We talked to Roman about the current status of the mustache.  Along with Manager Mike Steuerwald, Coach Roman's mustache is in the hands of the Bandits players, so to speak, but I'll let him explain it.
I also asked him about coaching women.  To those unfamiliar with the Bandits, coaching "girls" somehow seems less important than coaching me.  Once people come out to the ballpark and see the level of play, that opinion alwatys changes, even from the most diehard male sports fans.  Still, I wanted to hear Coach Roman's take on it and I could not agree more.
I also asked him about the rumor of him pursuing the vacant General Manager position with the Minnesota Twins (his home area team).  (Okay, it is a rumor started by JohngysBeat.com, but Coach Roman obliged me nonetheless).  I do appreciate him just rolling with it (and I think we both might have been only half-kidding).
He also talked about the challenges and rewards of this season.  It is clear that he enjoys what he does.  We're just happy to have him here!
For more info on Coach Roman and the Bandits, check out ChicagoBandits.com.  Also, check back here for our recurring coverage!

Friendly Encounters: Andrew Bryniarski & Heather Owens

Friendly Encounters is a weekly series about friends who have met celebrities.

Today the Friendly Encounters spotlight shines on "Hardcore" Heather Owens and Andrew Bryniarski.  The former is my friend, the wrestler.  The latter is former body-builder, current actor.
H2O met Bryniarski at Monster-Mania in New Jersey about 11 years ago.  Look at the young Hardcore One.  She's not exactly old now, but she is so young in this picture.  I love these older shots.
Heather is one of the top women wrestlers at Resistance Pro.  She is also part of the Days of the Dead machine which puts on fantastic conventions.  Perhaps Heather can get Bryniarski to appear at a Days event?
I encourage everyone to check out Heather at any RPro show and to check out any Days event, too.  You might not see Heather there though.  She is usually a blur of activity.
Heather is one "classy broad."  Being that this pic is 11 years old, I just wonder if she was a classy broad yet and if she was hardcore yet.  Either way, she is one of the best now.
