On the Beat With WIU Head Softball Coach Alisa Goler

Western Illinois University Head Softball Coach Alisa Goler is finishing her first season leading the Leathernecks. I went “On the Beat” to get an update interview with Goler.

WIU is currently 16-29 overall and 6-14 in Summit League Conference play. While that places the Leathernecks in last place in the conference, they aren't that far behind second place North Dakota State at 8-7. First place South Dakota State at 17-1 has dominated the conference and not much separates the rest of the teams.

Unfortunately for WIU, only six of the seven teams make the Summit League Championship tournament. With only five games remaining,WIU has a chance at moving up and making the tournament.

This weekend, WIU has four games at South Dakota. The Leathernecks finish the regular season Saturday, May 8 at DePaul. Meanwhile, sixth place North Dakota has four games at North Dakota State and four games hosting Kansas City.

Despite the current standings, the Leathernecks have played better than their record indicates. Twelve of their losses have been by two or fewer runs, a fact that brings conflicted feelings to Coach Goler. While it's definitely a positive to be competitive, it's also frustrating to be so close so often. Still, it shows positive signs.

Coach Goler talked about all of this. She was open and honest in her evaluation of herself and the team. She discussed her frustration and her satisfaction. She gave real insight into her mind as a coach and person. It was refreshingly not just coach speak, but I am not surprised, because Coach Goler has always been that way.

I originally got to know Goler during her four years with the National Pro Fastpitch Chicago Bandits. During her seven total seasons in the NPF, Goler always struck me as a real pro. She was a player with a coach's mind.

Goler did get into coaching, starting as hitting coach at Roosevelt University in 2014. After a fww other successful assistant coaching stints elsewhere, Goler was hired as the fourth Head Coach in program history.

In the interview, Goler talked about the differences in approach, evaluation and expectations between an assistant coach and Head Coach. Again, Goler was open about the challenges and rewards. In summary, she happily stated she is right where she wants to be.

We finished by discussing recruiting. Coach Goler talked about pursuing the best player possible versus fitting team needs. She stressed looking for good people in addition to good players. Since WIU is not a major softball powerhouse, there are challenges in recruiting, but there are also plenty of benefits. Coach Goler talked about all sides of the recruiting situation.

Getting a little ahead of ourselves, I asked Coach Goler about Fall Ball. With no non-essential fans allowed at games so far, I am already looking forward to the possibility of attending future games. While the schedule isn't set yet, WIU will play Fall Ball (and hopefully, I will be able to finally see Goler lead the Leathernecks in person).

Fans might be able to return for Fall Ball, but Leatherneck Nation will have their eyes on the team this weekend as they hope to take care of North Dakota. WIU needs to take care of business on their end, then watch the scoreboard for the other Summit League games which will affect the tournament.

We wish the Leathernecks good luck as the season ends. Hopefully, they will make the tournament and extend the season a bit.

Thank you as always to Coach Goler for her time and consideration. Thanks also to Assistant-Athletics Communications Keion Robinson for facilitating our interview.

Our interview is at On the Beat With Coach Alisa Goler of Western Illinois University Softball. Also check GoLeathernecks.com for more info on WIU Softball.

On the Beat With the New York Liberty 04/28/2021

Yesterday, I was "On the Beat" as the New York Liberty held a press session yesterday featuring assistant coach Jacki Gemelos, Jocelyn Willoughby, Neah Odom and Kylee Shook. With all due respect to the players, most of the attention was on the recently retired player-turned coach Gemelos.

After a stellar career at USC, Gemelos was selected by the Minnesota Lynx in the third round with the 31st overall pick in the 2012 WNBA Draft. After not making the Lynx roster, she would not debut in the WNBA until the 2015 season with the Chicago Sky. While she played overseas, she did not resurface in the WNBA until last season, which she split with the Connecticut Sun and the Washington Mystics. Along the way, Gemelos endured 10 knee operations.

Gemelos retired in the offseason with no immediate plans. Plans quickly materialized when Liberty coach Walt Hopkins called Gemelos with a coaching position offer. Although she ddin't originally plan it this way, Gemelos feels she is right where she belongs. "I definitely thought there would be coaching in my future. I just think I'm meant to be here."

Gemelos also joked about the first time she was called “coach” or technically, actually wasn't called “coach.” If that is just one part of the transition Gemelos is making.

Lastly, Gemelos joked and put out a question of the best Greek restaurants in the New York area. As I learned in talking to her last year, Gemelos is a big fan of the chocolate cake from Portillo's. I did not get the chance to ask her if she had the chance to enjoy any in the offseason.

Second year players Willoughby, Odom and Shook talked about their biggest lesson from last season and biggest challenge heading into this season. A rookie's season is challenging enough, but last season's WNBA rookies had the added issue of playing in the Bubble. This year they have the added pressure of competing for roster spots, where last year, the rosters were pretty set as they entered the Bubble.

Willoughby also talked about her book club. In February, Willoughby partnered with Cafe Con Libros, a Crown Heights bookstore, to start Read What You Saw, to explore injustices facing people of color through the eyes of women of color. It focuses on race, identity, healthcare, education, class and more. For now, it is a virtual online meeting, but it has become so popular in the short time, there are thoughts of expanding it already.

The Liberty finished a woeful 2-20 last season, worst in the WNBA. Star rookie Sabrina Ionescu hurt her ankle in the third game and missed the rest of the season. Ionescu is back and at full strength now

It's cliché to say, but the Liberty are better than last season's record indicates. The addition of new coach Gemelos and the growth of second year players Willoughby, Odom and Shook will be a big part of determining just how much better the Liberty are. We will start seeing the answer to that question on May 14, when the Liberty open the season by hosting the Indiana Fever.

The press session can be found at On the Beat With the New York Liberty 04/28/2021. Go to WNBA.com for more info on the Liberty and the WNBA. Check back here, GlobalWomensSportsRadio.com and GlobalTravelerUSA.com for my recurring coverage.

On the Beat With the Phoenix Mercury 04/25/2021

The first day of the Phoenix Mercury training camp was the tale of opposites. The legendary veteran is signed for two years and ready to have another great season, while the rookie Tiana Mangakahia is ready to start carving her own niche in the league.

Taurasi is entering her 18th WNBA season, all with the Phoenix Mercury. Having signed a two year contract in the offseason, Taurasi will most likely end her career with the Mercury, although she's not ready to say this will be her last contract.

Coach Sandy Brondello discussed having the legend and the rookie in camp. She is already familiar with Mangakahia from their time with Team Australia. Brondello thinks the combination of experience and youth between the two will produce winning results.

In the press session, the nine-time All-Star talked about creating challenges for herself every offseason. Taurasi said she works every day in the gym. She performs various drills to work on every aspect of conditioning and her game in particular.

As the team vet, everyone looks to Taurasi. That is especially the case with newcomer  Mangakahia.

The rookie talked about watching Taurasi and learning from her. Mangakahia stated, “I just feel very blessed for this opportunity, especially learning from Skylar (Diggins-Smith) and Diana.

Taurasi returned the compliment. “What an incredible story. “What an incredible fighter she is. To be able to get through and to be back on the court doing something that she loves is amazing.”

The fight Taurasi is referencing is Mangakahia's battle with breast cancer. In 2019, she fought stage 2, grade 3 breast cancer, including eight rounds of chemotherapy and a bilateral mastectomy. She underwent 18 months of post-surgery hormonal treatment. The good news is she is off medication, feeling great and ready to follow Taurasi's lead, while creating her own legacy.

Check this interview session at On the Beat With the Phoenix Mercury 04/25/2021. Also, go to WNBA.com for more info on the league and the Mercury.

On the Beat With the Connecticut Sun 04/25/2021

The Connecticut Sun opened training camp with a thin roster. Third year guard Natisha Hiedeman is the "veteran" of camp, a position she relishes and one Coach Curt Miller feels will pay dividends.

With the other team veterans playing in Europe and elsewhere, Coach Miller described the first practice as a "a bit sloppy," but he love the energy and enthusiasm. He stated the usual two hour practice actually went close to three hours because of the extra teaching necessary, but was quick to also stated that isn't a bad thing. The youngsters will get plenty of experience. They will get more time and attention than usual, which is good for the team and for them individually in the long run.

For her part, Hiedeman is embracing her role as "veteran" for now. Just as she usually  approaches veterans for advice and knowledge, she welcomes the younger players coming to her for the same reasons and she is ready to impart her insight. It's a new role for Hiedeman, which harkens back to her junior and senior seasons at Marquette.

During the last offseason, Hiedeman worked on gaining strength, realizing she needed to get stronger to compete with the WNBA veterans. This last offseason, Hiedeman continued to work on strength training, while also gaining more experience playing in Turkey.

A musician in her spare time, Hiedeman said she hasn't produced any new music since last season, but there will be more in the future. She also joked that we will be the first to know.

Lastly, Hiedeman discussed her personality. As someone who doesn't take life too seriously, she carries the same mindset into the arena, whether she is playing or on the bench. Her enthusiasm was a big boost for the Sun last year and she plans on continuing keeping her team loose, while still being a focused competitor.

Rookie DiJonai Carrington came to the Sun via the 2021 WNBA Draft. A standout at Stanford and Baylor, Carrington was the 20th overall selection in the draft. ESPN analyst and WNBA legend Rebecca Lobo felt she is the perfect fit for the Sun, because "she's a tough, physical player who can contribute right away."

With most of the team veterans away, more eyes will be on Carrington than usual, but she's fine with that. She just wants to soak up all the knowledge from the coaches and gain experience from the extra time she might get right now. Like Hiedeman, she is making the most of this time in camp.

Soon, the Sun will have their full roster. Until then, Coach Miller will focus on the youth in camp. Because they are playing elsewhere, the veterans will come into camp ready to go. Once the vets arrive, it will be business as usual.

Go to WNBA.com for more info on the WNBA and the Sun. Check the interview at On the Beat With the Connecticut Sun 04/25/2021.

Friend Encounters: Dan Hampton, Steve McMichael and Kevin Pollack

Friend Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

I first stumbled across Kevin Pollack on Facebook. Kevin is one of the creative folks behind Zooming the Movies, a project in which actors perform live script readings from various movies or television shows. I wrote more about it at Zooming the Movies for Global Traveler.
The first performance I saw was a reenactment of a Seinfeld episode. Since then, I have gone back and watched many of the older Zooming performances, as well as enjoying the new ones they have done. It's a lot of fun and hopefully once the restrictions loosen, Kevin and the gang will have live Zooming performances at venues in the area.
Kevin isn't limited to just Zooming the Movies. He is a multi-talented performer, including musical appearances. Such was the case a few years ago, when he appeared with some former Chicago Bears.
One of those Bears was Steve McMichael. Mongo was a star defensive player for a long time with the Bears, including their 1985 Super Bowl season. He went on to have a bit of a wrestling career, as well.
Unfortunately, McMichael recently announced he has ALS.
McMichale is only 63 and had a young daughter. It's tragic to see a once great athlete, or anyone really, struck down with this horrific condition. While McMichael has been active around the area, I hadn;t seen him lately. To see the change is truly saddening. It makes one think aboit one's own mortality. Any of us can suffer the same fate or worse.
There is a Team Mongo GoFundMe page to raise funds for McMichael's growing bills. Check it out to learn more about McMichael's battle and to donate if you are so inclined.
Also, check out Kevin's Zooming with the Movies on Facebook. You are sure to be entertained.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #533 Robert DeNiro & Scott Eastwood

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a weekly series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebrities wearing sports jerseys. Today, I continue working my way alphabetically through all MLB teams.

Robert DeNiro is a legendary actor, producer and director. DeNiro starred as a baseball catcher suffering from cancer in Bang the Drum Slowly, but he played for the fictional New York Mammoths. I might make fictional Celebrity Jersey Cards for fictional teams someday, but DeNiro finally earned a legit Celebrity Jersey Card when he appeared in The Fan.

Son of the legendary Clint Eastwood, Scott has created a solid career of his own. He also got a Celebrity Jersey Card before his father, when he appeared in Trouble With the Curve, a movie starring his father as a scout for the Braves. The younger Eastwood appeared as a player and earned his Celebrity Jersey Card.

Cards That Never Were: Rudy Meoli Topps 1972, '79 and Extras

Cards That Never Were is a recurring series in which I create virtual trading cards for players missed in various sets. It is a concept I have borrowed from far too many to list, but I appreciate all of their efforts. More of my creations and many great creations of others can be found in the Custom Baseball Cards Facebook group (and not just baseball cards).
Rudy Meoli was selected by the California Angels in the 4th round of the 1969 MLB draft. He made his MLB debut in 1971, appearing in seven games. He spent 1972 in the minors, but returned in 1973. He stayed with the Angels through 1975. In late '75, he was traded to the San Diego Padres, then traded to the Cincinnati Reds in early '76, playing both seasons in the minors. The Chicago Cubs purchased him in 1977 and he returned to the Majors with them in 1978. Meoli signed as a free egnt with the Philadelphia Phillies for the 1979 season, but was purchased by the Minnesota Twins in midseason. He only played in the minors for the Twins and was released after the season. He tried out with the San Francisco Giants in Spring Training of 1979, but did not make the team.
All told, in parts of 6 seasons, he played 310 games, hitting .212 with 133 hits, 2 HRs, 40 RBIs and 60 R. Mostly a shortstop, Meoli played a little at 2B and 3B with one game at 1B.
For his efforts, Meoli had cards in 1974-'76 and '78. Theoretically, that left 1972 and '79. I created a rookie 1972 card and the 1979 card. I am also featuring other Meoli cards that Lynn (from the previously mentioned FB group) created.

On the Beat With Mikaela Dokes and Walter Dokes

Mikaela Dokes is a young basketball sensation. At the tender age of six, Mikaela is advanced well beyond her years and she is only getting better.

Recently, I came across a video of Mikaela doing a basketball dribbling drill. I was amazed at the ability of the young girl and I checked out her other videos. One after another, I saw young Mikaela dribbling, shooting and doing all sorts of other basketball drills. In every video, I saw intensity in her eyes, but perhaps more important, I saw a smile on her face.

Wanting to know more and to share her story, I reached out to her father Walter about interviewing Mikaela and him. He was extremely gracious and yesterday, I had the pleasure of talking to Mikaela and Walter.

I could have interviewed Walter by himself, but we wanted people to see Mikaela and to get to know her. Also, if she keeps on her path (and I am totally confident she will), there will be many more interviews in her future.

Interviewing a six year old can be challenging. Youngsters are nervous and unfamiliar with the process, but Mikaela was a champ. She answered all the questions and even politely corrected me (and rightly so), when I mistakenly referred to her as a five year old.

Mikeala plays in several leagues and has attended many basketball camps. In one league, she plays with third graders. Although those girls are older and bigger, Mikaela keeps up with them (or they keep up with her, as I said in the interview). What she lacks in size (compared to the older girls) she makes up for in ability and determination.

Going into the interview, one main question I wanted to ask her father was about balancing basketball with all else in a six year old's life. Walter simply stated it all starts with God. The family obviously has a deep faith and is guided by that faith. Walter pushes his daughter hard in practices, but he always makes sure she is having fun with it. Mikaela wouldn't want it any other way. She is often the one asking about more practice.

I don't know where such a deep dedication originates in a six year old, but it's there in Mikaela. She already has a goal to play basketball at Notre Dame, like Sam Brunelle, one of her favorites, and in about 12 years, we will see Mikaela wearing a Fighting Irish jersey, too.

I always enjoy watching a young player's career develop. Usually that means watching them from high school or college. In Mikaela's case, I'm starting much earlier and I'll get to enjoy more of her progression.

As I told Walter, this was hopefully just our first interview. I plan on following Mikaela's journey all the way to the WNBA. By then, all the major sports media outlets will have discovered Mikaela and joined in covering her. I just hope she remembers me when she becomes that big star.

I encourage everyone to follow Mikaela Dokes Athlete on Facebook. Walter posts videos of her training and playing. She already has nearly 5,000 followers and that number, like her talent, will just keep growing.

I asked Walter to send updates to me so I can continue to share her story with our readers. The fun is just beginning with Mikaela.

On the Beat With Charli Collier of the Dallas Wings

The WNBA held its 2021 draft last week. With the first pick, the Dallas Wings selected Charli Collier from the University of Texas. I wrote more about the draft at 2021 WNBA Draft Recap for Global Women's Sports Radio.

Collier appeared in a media session right after being drafted and then was nice enough to do another media session early the next morning. Collier seemed to be having a great time throughout the whole experience. She had fun moments with her mom and then was just as fun with the press.

Of course, she answered the usual questions about being the first pick, adjusting to the pro league and stuff like that. Being from Houston and starring at the University of Texas, Collier was ecstatic to be drafted by her home state Wings.

I asked her about the team jelling with so many new faces. The Wings had three picks in the first round. She was honest, stating there would be an adjustment, but in college there were new players every year, too. She talked about the pressures of being the top pick and of competing with the other first rounders, even those on her own team.

The Wings finished last season 8-14 in last place in the Western Conference. They head into the 2021 season with a new coach and several new players. It's too early to predict success, but it's a safe bet to say they will be improved. At the very least, the team made moves to improve. The Western Conference is going to be very interesting.

Go to WNBA.com for more info on the Wings, Collier and the whole league. Also, check here, GlobalTravelerUSA.com, Patch.com and GlobalWomensSportsRadio.com for my recurring coverage.

On the Beat With Shawna Reed (Appearing Soon at Squared Circle Expo)

Since making her professional wrestling debut in 2016, Shawna Reed has been very busy and very successful. As she closes in on 500 matches, Shawna recently added All Elite Wrestling to her impressive resume.

Shawna has trained under Cody Hawk, Super Zeta and Dustin Runnels, while soaking in knowledge from many others from training seminars, wrestling matches and more. In addition to wrestling, Shawna booked and wrote her own show in 2019. She is very much a student of the game.

At a young age in a relatively short span, Shawna has won a few titles already. Currently, she is the reigning Women's champ for PBW (of Ohio), Blue Water Championship Wrestling (of Michigan) and Battle on the Border (of Ohio). She has also held titles in Women's Wrestling Alliance (Indiana), Fight Society Alpha Female (Pennsylvania) and XBW.

I have followed Shawna's career for several years now and have seen her develop and progress. I'm not alone, because the folks at AEW came calling recently. In her first AEW match, Shawna faced Dr. Britt Baker. Her next match was against Thunder Rosa. Shawna delivered quality matches against both opponents.

Debuting against Baker speaks a lot about what AEW thinks of Shawna. She isn't just filler for a match. Putting Shawna in the ring with one of AEW's top women is a statement. Following that by pitting her against Thunder Rosa furthers that point.

Right now, Shawna has wrestled twice at AEW and there is no promise of more, but there is no doubt in my mind she will be back. Wrestling can be a funny business. Her return might not happen right away, but after she did so well in those two matches, people took notice and I am sure that includes the folks at AEW. When the time is right, “the daughter of a thousand maniacs” will be back. In the meantime, Shawna will keep honing her craft and adding to her total of matches and titles.

One of those upcoming matches will be against an opponent to be named at the Squared Circle Expo May 15 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Although the SCE will be May 14 and 15, Shawna will only be appearing on Saturday. The good news is she will be meeting and greeting fans during the day and then she will be kicking butt in the ring Saturday night.

Last night I had the pleasure of interviewing Shawna. We talked about all of this and more. Although I had previously met Shawna at various shows, this was the first time I got to talk to her in more depth about her career.

I encountered a young wrestler who loves the business and takes it seriously, while still having fun doing so. I was already impressed with her in-ring work, but now I have a whole new appreciation for her mind set. That's a winning combination that should take her far in this business.

I really think we will see Shawna on AEW again sooner than later. Either way, I look forward to seeing her at the Squared Circle Expo.

Among the many others, Shawna is looking forward to reconnecting with Dustin Runnels, another of the many wrestling guests in the jam-packed lineup. With AEW wrestlers Britt Baker, Tay Conti and Nyla Rose also appearing, could either be an opponent for Shawna Saturday?

The Squared Circle Expo will be a unique fan experience. Promoted as a "convention dedicated to the culture of professional wrestling and sports entertainment," the Squared Circle Expo takes the best elements of conventions and adds a few new ones.

The two day event will include wrestling superstars, meet and greets, photo ops, special events, seminars, memorabilia vendors, Q&A panels and more. There will even be a live wrestling show on Saturday night. Along with Shawna, also appearing are Madusa, Vickie Guerrero, Melina, Renee Michelle, Francine, Tay Conti, Dr. Britt Baker, Booker T, the Gunn Club (Billy, Austin and Colten Gunn), Chris Masters, JTG, Kane, the Headbangers, Dustin Rhodes, Jake Roberts, Darby Allin, Sammy Guevara, Charles Wright, Dan Severn, Duke Droese. The Boogeyman, the Highlanders Al Snow, Kevin Thorn, Cody Hawk and more. The SCE promoters promise they aren't done with guest announcements either.

I really appreciate Shawna for her time and consideration in our interview. After debuting for AEW, I know she has been busier than ever. Shawna has a bright future. I look forward to seeing her at the Squared Circle Expo and on future AEW broadcasts. I encourage everyone to come out to the Squared Circle Expo for a chance to meet her and watch her wrestle.\

Go to SquaredCircleX.com for more info on the upcoming convention. Look for Shawna on social media and at SCE!

Grammar Police Watch: Sarcasm Meme

This is a recurring series in which I expose spelling and grammar errors I encounter. They are inexcusable to me. This series is dedicated to Roscoe Lindsey, my English teacher in high school and one of the best teachers I ever had. RIP Roscoe.
I wouldn't refer to Roscoe as "the grammar police," but he definitely promoted using the Queen's English. In this era of social media, spelling and grammar are often sacrificed for speed and space limitations. Roscoe was not happy about this situation.
The meme below made the rounds on social media. It attempts to use the Periodic Table of Elements to point out one's sense of sarcasm.
I could use sarcasm (or should I write “scaarsm”) to point the laziness, carelessness or plain stupidity contained in the meme. Instead, I will implore anyone making a meme or passing it around, double check the spelling. Misspelling sarcasm in a sarcastic meme deserves all the sarcasm it gets in in return.

Happy Birthday, Jean!

Today is my sister Jean's birthday. I am sure she is celebrating in a safe, mild manner in Florida, but I celebrate virtually with her from here.
Like my other sister Nancy who had a birthday a couple weeks ago, Jean is my rock. I could never thank either enough for the love, support and great times I have had with each.
I've invaded Jean's hom in a few states now, but she always keeps allowing me to return and we always have a great time (at least I do).
She's kind, caring and funny, capable of taking a good ribbing and delivering one right back. We've had so much fun over the years at events or just hanging around the house.
Jean and Scott have raised two great kids and now they are grandparents to a beautiful little girl (plus a baby boy on the way) and four fun pups. I love seeing pictures of Jean with Delaney. She has to be the coolest grandmother, because she is the coolest sister.
It's been a tough year or so. We've only seen each other a couple times. I miss Jean and everyone, but soon we shall all get together and have fun again.
I am raising my Coke can in a big toast to Jean. Have a fantastic birthday. I love you.

Friend Encounters: Jenna Elfman and Tony Feddeler

Friend Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

I'm back with one of my convention-wrestling-softball buddies, who is back with one of the sweetest convention celebrity guests I have met. Jenna Elfman and Tony Feddeler are two great folks (even if this picture is reversed due to the selfie effect).
Elfman was a dancer in some music videos and went on to an excellent acting career. Dharma and Greg was probably her first big exposure, but she has also done many movies and other episodic television. She has aldo done voiceover work.
Elfman has other famous folks in her family. Her uncle is the lead singer for The Lettermen. Her husband Bodhi is an actor and the nephew of composer Danny Elfman (who created the theme for The Simpsons, among his other great work).
When I met her at the Motor City Comic Con, Elfman was extremely nice. We chatted for longer than usual at such an event.
Tony met her at Walker Stalker, a convention featuring horror, sci-fi and fantasy. Fortunately for me, I met Elfman before Tony did, otherise I would be pretty envious of this picture. Either way though, I am happy Tony got to meet her.
Of course, the pandemic has postponed or canceled all such conventions this year. Neither Tony nor I have been to any events since February. It looks like it's not going to get much better through the rest of the year. This will be the worst year for celebrity encounters for Tony, me and most everyone else.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #532 Becky Lynch & Gail Kim

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a weekly series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebrities wearing sports jerseys. Today, I continue working my way alphabetically through all MLB teams.

Becky Lynch is a multi-time champ in the WWE, although currently she is on leave after having a baby and wanting to take some family time. "The Man" was born in Ireland, but has become a fan of Chicago teams, partly due to her significant other Seth Rollins. That didn't stop Lynch from appearing at a Toronto Blue Jays game with her WWE title belt. I always give wrestlers extra points for the title belt and also for wearing the team cap. I am not sure Lynch's cap is a Blue Jays, but I'm giving her the benfit of the doubt, because she is "the Man."

Native Canadian Gail Kim grew up to have a Hall of Fame wrestling career. Kim had a lot of success in the WWE, but earned her HOF status in TNA. Kim probably will eventually make it into the WWE, too, but she has had some issues with that company over the years. Kim earned her Celebrity Jersey Card by throwing out a first pitch for her hometown team. Se gets extra points for wearing the Jays cap and for the high leg kick.

AU Volleyball: Jordan Larson

The inaugural season of Athletes Unlimited volleyball ended with Jordan Larson being crowned the first champion. You can get more info on the season from older posts here and on GlobalWomensSportsRadio.com.

One of the fun parts for me was learning about players like Larson. Prior to the AU Volleyball season, my knowledge of volleyball and the playrs was pretty limited. Because of the broadcasts and the post-match press sessions, I got to know a lot more about all things volleyball.

Born in Nebraska, Larson is a member of the United States women's national volleyball team and Turkey club Eczacıbaşı VitrA. She was a silver medalist of the 2012 Olympic Games, a bronze medalist of the 2016 Olympic Games and a gold medalist of the 2014 World Championship. She was a two-time AVCA First Team All-American while playing college volleyball at Nebraska. At Nebraska, she became the first player ever to be named the Big 12 Player of the Year and the league's defensive player of the year in the same year.

In the AU Volleyball season, Larson was a captain for four of the five weeks, meaning she was in the top four in points for four weeks. For the season, she finished with 4,569 points, 879 points ahead of second. To put that in perspective, 865 points seperated second place from tenth place. That means Larson was dominant

Larson was a delight in press sessions. She analyzed the games, her play and the season in general. She also talked about the sport and other off-topic bits about her life. She was humble, while still being grateful in victory. In other words, she was everything you would want in a player and a champ!

I don't know if Larson will return for a second season. She'll only be 35. She certainly has game left in her, if she wants to play. My guess is she will return to defend her title.

AU announced there will be a second season, although time and place details were not announced. Next up though for AU is the lacrosse league and I will be "On the Beat" for that. Check AUProSports.com for more info on all AU leagues and check her for my recurring coverage.

Recalling Pominatrix and the Windy City Rollers

As things start happening again, the Windy City Rollers jumped (or rolled) back onto my radar. The league is looking for a new home for their practices. I wrote more in depth about WCR's search for a new home at Catching Up With the Windy City Rollers for Global Women's Sports Radio.
The Windy City Rollers were co-founded by Elizabeth Gomez (aka Juanna Rumbel) and Kelly Quinn Mallozzi (does she have a fun roller name?) in 2004.
The Rollers are the first flat-track Roller Derby league established in Chicago.  The all-female and non-binary folks league have four league teams that play within the league, as well as two travel leagues, an A and B team, that compete with other leagues around the world. WCR also hosts various clinics, including skating clinics. More than 1,000 skaters have represented WCR over the years.
As I have written previously, this roller derby isn't the televised roller derby I grew up watching. While it still retains fun names and some theatrics, it is a legit sport, complete with statistics and scoring. It is a bit confusing at first, but entertaining nonetheless. Eventually, I caught on to the scoring system and it became more fun. I still don't understand why they are called skaters and not rollers.
Pominatrix was one of the skaters at WCR. She has an impressive resume, including 2009 with the Haymarket Rioters, 2010 with Second Wind and 2010-2012 with Hell's Belles. She was also a staff member after that.
Pominatrix was just one of example of the friendly folks at WCR. They are always happy to mingle with fans (even us annoying older reporter fans). It really is an all inclusive atmosphere. In that way, it is much like comic cons. Everyone fits in.
Go to WindyCityRollers.com for more info. Also, check the Windy City Rollers Facebook page for more frequent updates.

Bad Boy Laimbeer Isn't So Bad

The health pandemic destroyed lots of events over the last year, but it also caused new opportunities in a strange way. I was able to cover the WNBA all season through Zoom sessions. One of the real cool parts was interacting with Las Vegas Aces Head Coach Bill Laimbeer.
Laimbeer is probably better known as one of the Detroit Pistons "Bad Boys" of the 80s-90s. The Pistons and the Chicago Bulls had a heated rivalry for years and Laimbeer was right in the middle of it always. Chants of "Laimbeer Sucks" and worse rang out in the Chicago Stadium whenever the Pistons were in town.
Fast forward to last year, I was a bit apprehensive going into my first media session with Laimbeer. It's no secret he can be gruff. I didn't know what to expect.
In that first session, I found Laimbeer to be straight forward and totally likable. We even had a few laughs. Every session after that was similar. I'm not going to claim I was Laimbeer's favorite, because after the fact. he probably didn't give me another thought. Still, during the sessions, I always got a chuckle or two out of him. I occasionally detoured into questions about his appearances on tv's Land of the Lost, the old rivalries and other non-WNBA topics. I think he appreciated the variety.
In the offseason, Liz Cambage returned to the Aces (as reported here last week). Already one of the best teams in the league, the Aces are poised to make a real run a the title this season.
The official schedule has not yet been released. I don't know if Zoom sessions will return, but I am hoping I have not seen the last of Laimbeer.
Go to WNBA.com for more info on Laimbeer, the Aces and the rest of the WNBA. Also, check here, Patch.com, GlobalTravelerUSA.com and GlobalWomensSportsRadio.com for my recurring coverage.

Chicagoland Championship Wrestling Returns June 12

John Bullard is the owner-promoter of Chicagoland Championship Wrestling, which debuted last year. My first interview with John at On the Beat With John Bullard gives a little more background info on him and CCW. You can also search Johngy's Beat for other CCW coverage.

After the successful debut, the next event was planned for April 17. Unfortunately, due to the ongoing pandemic, John made the tough, but wise, decision to move the next CCW event to June 12.

While it is disappointing, it is understandable and the best thing to do. John has put a lot of effort into doing CCW right. He could have held a smaller version of the event without postponing it, but it wouldn't be the same. Moving it a couple months won't hurt anyone and it will only give John more time to make it bigger and better (if that is possible).

I know I'll be in Michigan City on June 12. I'll be joining my fellow Chicago Connection mates there, although I'll be covering the event and they will be collecting championships, or so says Connection leader PL Myers.

To learn more about John and CCW, go to ChicagolandChampionshipWrestling.com. Also, check the Chicagoland Championship Wrestling page on Facebook to get more frequent updates and news. Check back here for my recurring coverage of CCW.

Grammar Police Watch: Unknown Parking Garage

This is a recurring series in which I expose spelling and grammar errors I encounter. They are inexcusable to me. This series is dedicated to Roscoe Lindsey, my English teacher in high school and one of the best teachers I ever had. RIP Roscoe.

I saw this picture posted on Facebook and knew it was perfect for this series. It always amazes me when printed/permanent signs have spelling erros.

Of course, maybe the garage managers were existentialists. Maybe they had a little Rene Descartes vibe going. Instead of "I think, therefore I am," maybe their motto is "I pay for parking, therefore I am."

Friend Encounters: Chelsey Haardt and Amanda

Friend Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

I first came across Amanda during her time in the Legends Football League. She played for the Los Angeles Temptation and the Atlanta Steam (unfortunately not my Chicago Bliss).
Amanda has been involved in sports virtually her whole life. She has been a part of the Canadian Olympic Development program. She has been a strength and fitness competitor and coach. She has done television and radio work. If I listed all of her awards and achievements, it would take me all day. What's more important though is who Amanda is.
Although I have never met her, I am happy to call her a long-distance friend. She was even kin enough to do a Johngy's Beat promo for me a few years back (now found in the left column).
Amanda is a fierce competitor. She has an amazing drive and focus, while still appearing to have so much fun along the way. Amanda is very engaging on social media. She shares tips, advice and her life experiences. Amanda's pages are a regular stop on my social media circuit.
She is also one of the most positive people you will ever see. Did I mention she is also funny and highly entertaining?
When Amanda posted a Throwback picture with former teammate Chelsey Haardt, I jumped at the chance to do a Friend Encounters featuring Amanda. Like Amanda, Chelsey is an accomplished athlete, who has also been a pro football player in the LFL, as well as a coach and fitness expert on her own and for various companies. It would be hard to find another picture with two more finely tuned women athletes.
Some day I hope to meet Amanda. She's on my people bucket list. Until then, I'll keep following her exploits online.
I encourage everyone to follow Amanda at @AmandaBolic on twitter and Amanda Ruller on Instagram. Also, if you're in the Calgary area, look for Amanda at sporting events and on television. She's everywhere!

Celebrity Jersey Cards #531 Clyde Drexler & Hakeem Olajuwan

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a weekly series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebrities wearing sports jerseys. Today, I continue working my way alphabetically through all MLB teams.

After an outstanding career at the University of Houston, Clyde Drexler was selected by the Portland Trail Blazers with the 14th pick in the 1983 NBA draft. "The Glyde" spent 11.5 seasons with the Trail Blazers, before playing 3.5 years with the Houston Rockets to end his Hall of Fame career. He won one NBA championship (when Michael Jordan was temporarily retired, I must add). Drexler earned his Celebrity Jersey Card tossing the first pitch for the Houston Astros. I wonder if he glided it.

Born in Nigeria, Hakeem Olajuwon was a teammate of Drexler's at the University of Houston. Olajuwon was selected by the Rockets with the first pick in the 1983 NBA draft, He played  He played 17 seasons with the Rockets, before finishing his career with the Toronto Raptors for one season. He won two championships (both when Michael Jordan was temporarily retired, I must add) and was inducted into the Hall of Fame. Olajuwon tossed a first pitch for the Astors to get his Celebrity Jersey Card, unless it was all a "dream."

Celebrity Jersey Cards #530 Special WrestleMania Edition: Hulk Hogan & The Miz

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a weekly series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebrities wearing sports jerseys. Today, celebrating the start of the WWE's WrestleMania, I feature wrestlers repping teams.

Hulk Hogan put the (then) WWF and wrestling in the mainstream with the debut of WrestleMania. Hogan is arguably the most recognized wrestler ever. Hogan's Celebrity Jersey Card completes the four sport Grand Slam for him. It also bends the time continuum , as the Toronto Raptors did not exist at the time of this card's original issue.  time of this card's original issue.

Born in Parma, Ohio, Mike Mizanan has carved quite a career. Starting as a reality television star and transforming himself into a solid wrestler, The Miz has earned everything he has achieved. While he has his share of critics, I think when his career is over, people will look back on it and realized all he accomplished. Miz stayed true to his Ohio roots and donned the Cleveland Cavaliers jersey for an appearance at a game. I don't know the connection to the #40, since nobody really distinguished themselves wearing that number for the Cavs.

On the Beat With Dirk Manning

I have previously interviewed and written about comic-creator Dirk Manning many times. You can find past coverage by going to Dirk Manning on Johngy's Beat.
I first met Dirk many years ago at a comic con and have seen him many times since. He is always good for an update on his latest projects, as well as talking about wrestling, ice cream and other fun. Dirk has an extensive bibliography and I am a devoted reader of his works, but I have never been as excited as I am about his latest project, Butts In Seats: The Tony Schiavone Story.
Wednesday evening, I had the pleasure of doing an interview with Dirk about Butts In Seats, as well as his other projects. We even squeezed in a little ice cream talk. I have been excited about this book from the first time I read about it in one of Dirk's social media posts. An admitted "unabashed wrestling fan," Dirk is the perfect person to write this story with Tony. Dirk understands and appreciates the wrestling business. He is also an extremely talented writer. Add Tony's collaboration and this book promises to be a winner.
Tony has had an interesting career. Falling in love with wrestling, becoming an announcer, leaving wrestling, broadcasting baseball and returning to wrestling are just part of Tony's journey. Although wrestling is a big part of this book, it's not the whole story. Butts In Seats can be enjoyed be anyone, wrestling fan or not. I have ordered the book and I encourage everyone to check out the Kickstarter campaign to learn all about it, which will lead you to buying the book. Once I get it, I will be reviewing it here, although I don't think Dirk or Tony have any worries. I am confident this book is going to be awesome.
I hope you enjoy the interview as much as I enjoyed talking to Dirk. I appreciate Dirk for all of the entertainment he has provided me in written form and I appreciate his friendship even more. I thank Dirk for taking time from his current insanely busy schedule to give me this fun interview.
Go to the Butts In Seats: The Tony Schiavone Story Kickstarter page for more info. Also, check out Dirk's other work at DirkManning.com and look for him on social media. Also, go to AllEliteWrestling.com for more on Tony and the whole organization.

Happy Birthday, Nancy!

Today is my eldest sister Nancy's birthday. While she is still out west, I am celebrating her day and sending my love.

We have semi-jokingly started referring to Nancy as the matriarch of our family. While it is a playful jab at her age (although we are all getting older), it is done with love. Don't worry, Nancy gives it back just as good, too.

Both my sisters are my rocks. Not only have they been there for me always, but we have had so many laughs and good times.

The picture below is of Nancy with Sully, when he was just a little pup. Now he's causing all sorts of mischief and Nanc loves him dearly. She's a great dog mom, regular mom, sister and person.

I hope Nancy has a great birthday. Once things settle, the siblings will have a big celebration of all the days we missed during this pandemic. For today though, I send birthday greetings and love out west. Happy birthday, Nancy. I love you.

Coach Gary Kloppenburg and the WNBA Seattle Storm

Gary Kloppenburg played basketball at the University of California, San Diego and semi-professionally here and overseas. Kloppenburg began his coaching career as an assistant men's basketball coach at Feather River College ifor the 1983-84 season.
Kloppenburg served as an assistant coach with the WNBA Seattle Storm 2000-02 and Phoenix Mercury in 2003. He was an assistant coach of the Charlotte Bobcats of the National Basketball Association from 2004-07 and an assistant coach of the Indiana Fever 2008-11 and Los Angeles Sparks in 2014.
In 2017, Kloppenburg became an assistant for the Storm. He was named interim head coach in August 2017.  Kloppenburg stayed as an assistant under new head coach Dan Hughes. In the 2019 season, Kloppenburg served as interim head coach again when Hughes was recovering from cancer surgery. In June 2020, Kloppenburg became head coach again after Hughes was determined to be at higher risk of illness from COVID-19.
Last season, Kloppenburg led the Storm to an 18-4 record, good for second place in the Western Conference, although they shared the same record as the first place Las Vegas Aces. The Storm went on to beat the Aces for the WNBA championship.
Kloppenburg was great in the press sessions. While I want to compliment Kloppenburg for those sessions, I have to say all of the WNBA coaches and players were really cool with the press.
The Storm is loaded with great players like Sue Bird, Breanna Stewart, Mercedes Russell and more. The 2021 WNBA season promises to be very interesting though, as there was significant moving of players on other teams via free agency and trades.
The WNBA is set to start the season midsummer, but no specific details were announced. I am guessing teams will play in their home arenas with limited fans to start. I don't know eher that leaves press sessions. I am hoping for another year of covering the teams via Zoom, but I'll find out when the announcements are made.
Either way, I'll be providing coverage here, GlobalTravelerUSA.com and GlobalWomensSportsRadio.com. Also check out WNBA.com for more news and info.

Madusa Appearing at the Squared Circle Expo

Madusa Miceli is coming to the Squared Circle Expo May 14-15 in Indianapolis, Indiana. This is quite a coup for a lineup that already includes many legendary wrestling legends.
Debrah Ann Miceli was born in Milan, Italy, but rose to fame as in wrestling rings all over the world. Known mostly as Madusa Miceli, she wrestled as Alundra Blayze in the WWF.
Trained by Eddie Sharkey in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Madusa joined the American Wrestling Association in 1986. Her first feud was with Sherri Martel. Madusa would go on to beat Candi Devine in a tournament final for the vacant AWA Women's title in December 1987. She held that belt for almost a year before losing it to Wendi Richter.
During this time, Madusa also managed "Mr. Magnificent" Kevin Kelly and the AWA World Heavyweight Champion Curt Hennig Madusa and Hennig eventually joined the Diamond Exchange, a stable led by Diamond Dallas Page. In 1988, she was the first woman to be awarded Pro Wrestling Illustrated's Rookie of the Year. The next year, she signed with All Japan Women's Pro-Wrestling, first foreign wrestler to do so.
In 1991, Madusa joined World Championship Wrestling as part of Paul E. Dangerously's Dangerous Alliance. After mostly serving as a valet to Rick Rude, Madusa was kicked out of the Dangerous Alliance. Madusa got revenge by beating Dangerously by count-out at the Clash of Champions XXII.
When Madusa signed with the WWF, Vince McMahon did not want to pay her for her trademarked name, no did he like acknowledging the pasts of wrestlers. Madusa was renamed Alundra Blayze.
In December 1993, she beat Heidi Lee Morgan for the vacant Women's title. She lost the title to Bull Nakano in November 1994, but won it back in April 1995 for her second reign. She lost the title to Bertha Faye in August 1995, but won it again in October 1995 for her third reign.
At the end of 1995, Madusa rejoined WCW and discarded the WWE title belt. Madusa never won the WCW Women's title, but did hold the WCW Cruiserweight title after beating Evan Karagias to become the first woman to hold that title. Madusa was also part of Randy Savage's Team Madness. Madusa also served as an instructor at WCW's Power Plant.
In 2015, she was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame under the Alundra Blayze moniker. She returned with the WWE Women's title and proclaimed it was back where it belonged and she was champ. She later returned and beat Candice Michelle for the 24/7 title, a belt she eventually sold to Ted DiBiase. In 2017, the WWE Network released a documentary entitled "TrailBlayzer" detailing Miceli's careers in both wrestling and monster truck driving.
Madusa is just the latest guest announced for what is shaping up to be a fantastic lineup of wrestling legends.
The Squared Circle Expo promises to deliver a unique fan experience. Promoted as a " convention dedicated to the culture of professional wrestling and sports entertainment," the Squared Circle Expo takes the best elements of conventions and adds a few new ones to deliver a unique fan experience.
The two day event will include wrestling superstars, meet and greets, photo ops, special events, seminars, memorabilia vendors, Q&A panels and more. There will even be a live wrestling show on Saturday night. Along with Madusa, also appearing are Vickie Guerrero, Melina, Renee Michelle, Francine, Tay Conti, Dr. Britt Baker, Booker T, the Gunn Club (Billy, Austin and Colten Gunn), Chris Masters, JTG, Kane, the Headbangers, Dustin Rhodes, Jake Roberts, Darby Allin, Sammy Guevara, Charles Wright, Dan Severn, Duke Droese. The Boogeyman and the Highlanders. More legends will be announced as they are added.
I will be "On the Beat" all weekend. Until then, I'll be updating news here, on GlobalWomensSportsRadio.com and Patch.com. Also, check SquaredCircleX.coom for more info.

Friend Encounters: Dennis Rodman and Mike Pankow

Friend Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

Longtime journalist Mike Pankow is the man behind Windy City Slam, a great website focused on the wrestling scene from Chicago and around the world. I don't know how he covers so much stuff. He is a machine.
I have been privileged to help Mike a few times with interviews. Cameraman Johngy is always ready and happy to contribute to Windy City Slam any time.
While Mike is achieving legendary status as a wrestling journalist, he meets a lot of other legends. One of those was NBA Hall of Famer Dennis Rodman. "The Worm" won titles with the Chicago Bulls and the Detroit Pistons, but he also made several appearances in the wrestling ring. He debuted in WCW in the NWO along with Hollywood Hulk Hogan. Rodman was actually decent in wrestling, for an outsider. I'm sure his practice was limited, but he did okay in the ring and certainly brought attention to the company.
The two legends met at the Baseball Card Exchange in Schererville, IN a few years ago. Unfortunately, Mike did not get an interview with him. Unfortunately #2, I wasn't there to witness the meeting or to meet Rodman.
Go to WindyCitySlam.com to check out Mike's great site. If you're a wrestling fan, there is a lot of awesome material there.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #529 Billie Joe Armstrong & Mike Dirnt

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a weekly series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebrities wearing sports jerseys. Today, I continue working my way alphabetically through all MLB teams.

Oakland native Billie Joe Armstrong is the co-founder, lead vocalist, primary songwriter, and lead guitarist of Green Day, He met fellow co-founder Mike Dirnt while both were in elementary school. The duo started Sweet Children ion their teens and that morphed into Green Day. Armstrong stayed true to his roots by wearing an A's jersey when he was on the field in Oakland, earning his Celebrity Jersey Card..
Fellow Oaklander Mike Dirnt is co-founder, bassist, backing, occasional lead vocalist and former guitarist of Green Day. Dirnt and Armstrong also co-founded Oakland Coffee Works, a company selling organic coffee beans and the first company to use mass-produced compostable bags and pods. Green Day was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015, their first year of eligibility. Dirnt also showed his loyalty to the A's by donning the green and gold while on the field in Oakland, earning his Celebrity Jersey Card.

Cards That Never Were: Ron Allen Topps 1973

Cards That Never Were is a recurring series in which I create virtual trading cards for players missed in various sets. It is a concept I have borrowed from far too many to list, but I appreciate all of their efforts. More of my creations and many great creations of others can be found in the Custom Baseball Cards Facebook group (and not just baseball cards).
The younger brother of Dick and Hank Allen, Ron Allen started his pro career in the Philadelphia Phillies organization in 1964. After hitting 135 homers in the minors, Ron finally made it to the majors with the St. Louis Cardinals for seven games in 1972. In seven games with the Cards, Ron had 11 plate appearances, getting one hit (a home run, one RBI and two runs scored. Defensively, he appeared in five games at 1st base.
Topps did not give Ron a card for his brief stint with the Cardinals. While that is understandable, as long as I could find a picture and somewhat colorize it, I had to try to make that missing card. I made two. Neither is great, but they are the best I could do.
Additionally, I am showing a 1969 card that Lynn, from the aforementioned FB group, created. It's a beauty of a card, too.

Monica Abbott of Team USA

As everyone knows by now, the Olympics were postponed until this summer. While it is disappointing now, it will only be that much sweeter this summer.
One of the biggest names on Team USA is Monica Abbott. I had the pleasure of watching Monica up close during her time with the Chicago Bandits. Monica is an elite pitcher and an even better person.
While at the University of Tennessee, Monica was 189-34 with a .79 ERA and 2440 strikeouts in 1448 innings pitched. In National Pro Fastpitch action, Monica was 126-41 with a 1.01 ERA and 1626 strikeouts in 1108 innings pitched. On the international stage, Monica is 19-1 with a .59 ERA and 193 strikeouts in 108.2 innings pitched. That is domination on all levels.
Monica has been on Gold medal-winning teams in the ISF World Championships (3), the World Cup of Softball (5), the Pan American Games (2) and the Canada Cup (3). In 2008, Team USA took the Silver medal, which is a major achievement, although a bit of a disappointment for the players. That disappointment fuels the returning players and inspires the newcomers. Nobody wants Gold more than Monica though.
I had the pleasure of talking to Monica about her road to the Olympics. That interview can be found at On the Beat With Monica Abbott of Team USA.
A common sentiment from softball players is to give back. Monica believes strongly in that and she acts upon it through the Monica Abbott Scholarship. Monica's Scholarship Fund is awarded annually to two graduating High School Seniors involved in multiple High School sports to assist with their college tuition.
If you can't tell, I have a great deal of respect and fondness for Monica. It's easy to feel that way about one of the greatest of all time, but I am equally impressed with Monica off the field. That is why I am a #Moniac!
Go to MonicaAbbott.com for more info on Monica and be sure to check out the Monica Abbott Scholarship there. Also, go to TeamUSA.org for all of the news and updates on the 2021 Olympic team.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #528 Gene Autry & Jackie Autry

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a weekly series in which I create virtual trading cards of celebrities wearing sports jerseys. Celebrating MLB's Opening Day, I start marching alphabetically through all baseball teams.

Nobody better represents the Los Angeles Angels better than Gene Autry. A major star of movies and television, Autry was also a minority owner of the minor league Hollywood Stars. When MLB announced plans to have an expansion team in Los Angeles, Autry sought the radio broadcast rights, but was talked into buying the team. The team moved and/or changed names a few times, but always stayed close to the Los Angeles area. Eventually the Angels were sold to the Walt Disney Company. The Angels retired #26 (as in 26th man) to honor Autry. While he once turned down an offer to play minor league ball, Autry donned the full Angels uniform a few times for various events and also earned extra points for that on his Celebrity Jersey Card.
Jackie Autry is the widow of Gene Autry, as well as being the former owner of the Angels and an Honorary American League President. She started as a switchboard operator at a bank nd moved up to vice president eight years later. Beloved and embraced by the Angels organization, Jackie threw out the first pitch to earn her Celebrity Jersey Card. She was accompanied by former Anaheim Mayor Tom Daly, who missed his chance at a Celebrity Jersey Card by wearing a suit.
