Celebrity Jersey Cards #539 Danielle Fishel, Ben Savage & Fred Savage
Celebrity Jersey Cards is a weekly series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebrities wearing sports jerseys. Today, I continue working my way alphabetically through all MLB teams. I usually feature two celebs with some sort of connection (although I stretch that concept a bit), but today I feature three who are connected.
Born in Mesa, Arizona, Danielle Fishel started acting in commercials and doing voice-overs, before she rose to big fame as Topanga in Boy Meets World. Everyone loved Danielle as Topanga, although I was a bit old at the time. I'm happy to report she was one of the coolest celebs I ever met. At Wizard World a few years ago, I did a quick interview with her, followed by a selfie, of course. Every day after that, she called me over to take a new selfie. Fishel took the field at Dodger Stadium when the team honored her and her co-stars on Girl Meets World. Fishel's Celebrity Jersey Card is the first one to show a celeb in the catcher position with a mitt.
Ben Savage portrayed Cory Matthews, the love interest of Fishel's Topanga character on Boy Meets World and her husband on Girl Meets World. Ben is the younger brother of fellow actor Fred Savage of The Wonder Years. Ben is a Chicago native, but donned the Dodger Blue for the special night at Dodger Stadium with his co-stars. Since Fishel was a catcher on her Celebrity Jersey Card, Ben logically had to be the pitcher. They made a great pair, even if it was only on television.Saturday, May 29, 2021
On the Beat With the Seattle Storm 05/27/2021
The defending champion Seattle Storm are 4-1 in first place in the Western Conference. Their recent victory over the previously undefeated Connecticut Sun extended their winning streak to three games.
On Thursday, the Storm held a media session featuring Head Coach Dan Hughes and players Candice Dupree and Mercedes Russell. I especially like practice day media sessions because they tend to be be focused on less game-specific topics.
Coach Hughes started by discussing his recent absence to be with his family for his son's graduation. A coaching veteran of more than 20 years, Hughes expressed his changing values. Without regretting previous decisions, Hughes admitted his priorities have changed a bit. More accurately, his ability to balance family and coaching has improved. Both sides of his life are obviously important, but there is room for both.
That conversation morphed into a discussion on Assistant Coach Noelle Quinn, who tok the reigns in his absence. Hughes was quick to point out this wasn't a snub of assistant coach Gary Kloppenburg, who as interim coach last season led the team to the WNBA title. The situation was more of each coach handling specific elements of the job. Hughes praised all of his staff.
Candice Dupree was next, starting her session with talk of her moving up to fourth on the WNBA all-time points list. In her 16th season, Dupree is 83 points behind Cappie Pondexter. While it is an accomplishment that brings her pride, she doesn't really think about it right now.
The 7x All-Star also talked about her changing role. After signing with the Storm in the offseason, Dupree has seen her game minutes drop to below 20 for the first time. It is still early in the season and the team is still finding the right combinations, but obviously she would like to play more. I don't think it is a point of controversy at this point, but it is a situation worth watching.
Lastly, Russell took her turn on the hot seat. Russell spent most of her session answering questions about defense aqnd setting screens on offense. It was an interesting peak into the min of a player on both sides of the ball.
The Storm returns to the court tonight when they host the Minnesota Lynx. The Lynx, who already lost once to the Storm this season, and the Los Angeles Sparks are the only teams without a win. I don't see the Lynx breaking into the win column tonight.

On the Beat With Chelsea Gonzales
Yesterday, I had the pleasure of interviewing Chelsea Gonzales, South Mountain Community College Softball Assistant Coach. Still at a young age, Gonzales already has an impressive resume and will be adding to it in the 2021 Summer Olympics.
I first became aware of Gonzales a few years back during her stellar playing career at Arizona State University. In her four years with the Sun Devils, Gonzales played 220 games (starting 210). She hit .318, with 44 home runs, 183 RBIs and 136 runs scored. She had a .388 OBP and slugged .589.
Gonzales racked up plenty of awards, honors and accolades while playing for the Sun Devils, but one of her favorite memories was one hit. It was a big hit, though or I should say it was a “grand” hit, but I'll let you hear about that in our interview.
After ASU, Gonzales started playing professional softball with the National Pro Fastpitch Cleveland Comets. This is when I first met her, when the Comets came to Rosemont to play the Chicago Bandits.
Gonzales also plays for Team Mexico, who will be competing in the 2021 Summer Olympics. The Olympics were delayed from 2020 due to the pandemic, but on July 23, Gonzales will join her Team Mexico mates in going for the Gold as softball kicks off the events.
Coincidentally, her route to Team Mexico was originally delayed, but by her own choosing, a choice she now says she regrets. Fortunately for all, things worked out and Gonzales did join Team Mexico.
Her path to coaching at South Mountain CC was also interesting. An idea, a desire and a phone call led her to SMCC.
Gonzales talked about all of this and more during our interview. There was so much ground to cover and I wanted to hit all of it. She was a great college player, who is now transitioning to coaching, while also representing her country in the Olympics. Each of those topics could have been a separate interview.
I always find the dynamic between such a young coach and her players interesting. So close to her own college days, Gonzales can relate well to the players, but drawing a line can be a challenge. For Gonzales, it is a challenge she recognizes and is handling well.
I really enjoyed this interview. Gonzales is a very mature young athlete/coach, but she hasn't lost her fun nature and never will, another fact she stated in our talk.
Good things have come to Gonzales and will continue to do so, but she has worked very hard to earn everything. Her future is bright and I look forward to watching her career develop, wherever it takes her. For the immediate future though, it will take her to Tokyo, Japan.
I thank Gonzales for her time and consideration in talking to me. I wish her and Team Mexico luck in the upcoming Olympics. It would be awesome to see her add a Gold medal to her other awards.
Our interview can be found at On the Beat With Chelsea Gonzales. I hope I can revisit Gonzales later this year to discuss her experience there.

On the Beat With Lauren Jackson
About a week ago, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2021 was announced. Last night, I had the pleasure of interviewing Lauren Jackson, one of the 16 honorees.
A native of Australia, Jackson's awards and her list of accomplishments could fill an entire room in the HOF. Selected by the WNBA's Seattle Storm with the first overall pick in the 2001 draft, Jackson played 12 years with the Storm, winning two championships along the way. Her other WNBA achievements include:
- WNBA MVP 3x
- WNBA scoring champion 3x
- WNBA Finals MVP
- All-WNBA First Team 7x
- WNBA Defensive Player of the Year
- WNBA's All-Decade Team (2006)
- Her No. 15 retired by the Storm
Jackson's basketball journey started well before her WNBA career though. She started playing when she was four and made the Australian Under-20 team when she was only 14. She would go on to play for Team Australia in four Olympic Games, winning three silver medals and one bronze.
She was a star in the Women's National Basketball League in Australia, winning four MVP awards and four Grand Final MVP awards, while being a key part of the team winning five WNBL titles. Jackson also played in The Women's Chinese Basketball Association, the Women's Korean Basketball League, the Russian SuperLeague and in several other countries around the world.
I started by asking Jackson what the induction meant to her. As I said to her, it is a question she has answered many times and will answer many more times, but one I wanted to hear her answer directly. While her answer wasn't a surprise, it was important to hear her emotion.
The interview moved on to her earliest days playing. As a youngster paying against older players, she admitted to feeling intimidated, but learning to adjust.
I always like asking if the person was able to soak in any of the experiences as they were happening. Obviously, Jackson enjoyed playing, but she talked about being able to feel it in the moment.
A 6'5” power forward and center, Jackson was actually ahead of her time while playing in the WNBA. She talked about the game changing, with actual positions being less important and more emphasis on shooting. The game now might be even more suited for Jackson. Despite having a Hall of Fame career as was, imagine what she could do now.
Talk moved on to her book, My Story: A Life in Basketball and Beyond. Having previously read and enjoyed the book, I was surprised about some of the obstacles Jackson had to overcome. She talked about the cathartic process of writing the book. She ended by saying she enjoyed writing it, but won't do another.
As someone who has seen so much of the world, I asked her for her favorite places. Se did not hesitate in mentioning South Korea, stating it was one of the best experiences of her life.
Lastly, bringing it back to her homeland, I asked Jackson to name a few “must see” places in Australia. I think she is almost as passionate about Australia as she is about basketball. I enjoyed hearing her thoughts on the beautiful area.
I really appreciate Jackson for spending time talking about her career. One week removed from the big announcement, Jackson has been inundated with interview requests. I thank her for her time and consideration, as well as the fine folks at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame for facilitating the interview. The interview can be found at On the Beat With Lauren Jackson.

On the Beat With Coach Rabun Wright
I was “On the Beat” with Coach Rabun Wright, Assistant Women's Basketball Coach at Jacksonville State University.
Our conversation started with her unique name. Coach Rabun explained how she shares her name with Rabun County in Georgia. It's an interesting name for an interesting person.
Coach Rabun graduated from Rabun County High in Clayton, Georgia. She led her team to the school's first-ever region championship. Along the way, she picked up a bunch of awards and accolades, including being named an All-Region player.
She then moved on to North Alabama, where she graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Mass Communications with a concentration in Broadcast Journalism. She later earned her master's degree in Business Administration (Sports Management) from Shorter University.
While playing for UNA, Rabun helped re-establish the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She also led a bible study group of UNA women athletes.
Rabun got her start in collegiate coaching at Shorter University. She also was on the coaching staff at Florida SouthWestern State College prior to joining JSU.
In our interview, Coach Rabun talked about how she started in coaching. While it wasn't part of her original plan, she feels it was God's plan and she is doing exactly what she should be doing. She talked about the possibility of coaching in the WNBA or NBA, either position she would welcome.
We also talked about her work with ministry programs, her faith and the social justice movement. I am putting all together here, because they are all related. All of her work and her statements lead back to her faith. As a woman, especially a woman not of color, Coach Rabun feels it is important, her duty actually, to speak out, to use her platform and to be an example.
Coach Rabun obviously has a deep faith and she is very open and vocal about it, always in a positive way. Her Twitter lead statement is “Just be a good person. It's really that simple.” That's also a simple statement, but one that says a lot.
Coach Rabun's faith runs deep and so does her love of basketball and coaching. Her latest tweet says it all. “I love being a basketball coach. That's it. That's the tweet.” That's typical Rabun. Straight to the point.
I appreciate Coach Rabun for her time and consideration for our interview. I encourage everyone to follow her career path, which will hopefully one day lead her to the WNBA. If not, as Coach Rabun would say, it will lead wherever it is meant to go. No matter where it goes, we will be following. Our interview can be found at On the Beat With Rabun Wright.

On the Beat With the Atlanta Dream 05/21/2021
On Friday morning, the Atlanta Dream held a press session featuring Elizabeth Williams and Monique Billings. This was my first time in a Dream media session and it brings my total WNBA teams to nine of the 12). .It was an unusually short session, because the team was preparing for their game against the Indiana Fever that night. The media session can be found at On the Beat With the Atlanta Dream 05/21/2021.
Both players discussed playing with and against Jessica Breland, who played for the Dream in 2018 and 2019. The well-traveled Breland started her WNBA career with the New York Liberty in 2011, but she was actually drafted by the Minnesota Lynx with the 13th overall pick in the 2011 WNBA Draft. Midway through the 2011 season, she joined the Connecticut Sun. She was out of the WNBA in 2012, but returned with the Indiana Fever in 2013. After just one season with the Fever, she signed with the Chicago Sky. She played four seasons with the Sky, before joining the Dream for two seasons. In 2020, she played for the Phoenix Mercury. This is her first season back with the Fever. Along the way, Breland made a lot of friends and is a very popular player.
Williams and Billings also talked about their roles on the team and the team's game plan in general. Billings gave a review of her team's performance in the previous game. Both players indicated the Dream has the potential, citing the excellent defensive showing. The team needs to play consistent throughout the game, not just a half.
The Dream went into Friday night's game 0-2, but Indiana was also looking for their first win against three losses. In the end, the Dream edged the Fever 83-79 in a game that went down to the wire.
Go to WNBA.com for more info on the Dream and the league. Also, check my recurring coverage here, on GlobalTravleerUSA.com, Patch.com and GlobalWomensSportsRadio.com.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #538 Joe Bonamassa & Jesse McGuire
Celebrity Jersey Cards is a weekly series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebrities wearing sports jerseys. Today, I continue working my way alphabetically through all MLB teams.
Born in New York, musician Joe Bonamassa started his musical journey as a pre-teen opening for the legendary B.B. King. Bonamassa has carved out a great career as a blues guitarist, although unlike many blues rock guitarists, his influences are British and Irish blues acts rather than American artists. Eleven of his solo albums have reached the No. 1 position on the Billboard Blues chart. Bonamassa played the National Anthem for the Diamondbacks and landed on a Celebrity Jersey Card.
Jesse McGuire is an American trumpeter from Phoenix, Arizona. He is well-known for his performances of the National Anthem, including in front of three Presidents. McGuire was lead trumpeter for the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra of New York City. McGuire earned his Celebrity Jersey Card for one of his performances at a D-Backs game.Saturday, May 22, 2021

AU Volleyball: Aury Cruz
The inaugural Athletes Unlimited Volleyball season ended in March with Jordan Larson being crowned the first champion. I came to really enjoy the league and the players much more than I expected. Learning about the players and getting to know them through the press sessions was one of the fun parts.
One of the top players for the first season was Aury Cruz. Born in Puerto Rico, Área Esther "Aury" Cruz Dalmau competed for the Puerto Rico national team at the 2008 Olympic Qualification Tournament in Japan, where she was named Best Server at the event. She attended the University of Florida, where she was inducted into their Athletic Hall of Fame as a "Gator Great" in 2014.
During one of the press sessions, I asked Cruz about that honor. She talked about it being a great feeling. She never imagined she would be among the greatest athletes from that school. It's always great to hear a player appreciate those such honors that way.
Players like Cruz accumulate many awards and honors during their careers. I always wonder if they start to become immune to the specialness of such things. It's not that the players don't care, but after so many awards, does it become routine to them? Cruz was genuinely proud and happy with her place in that HOF.
During the AU season, Cruz finished in fourth place with 3,582 points. That's only 108 points behind second place. While it is 987 points behind first, champion Larson dominated the league. I am judging Cruz on the rest of the league.
Finishing in fourth, Cruz was a regular presence in the post-match media sessions. She was always a good interview.
There will be a second season of AU Volleyball, although dates and location have not been announced. Go to AUProSports.com for more info and updates. I'll also provide recurring coverage here, as always.

Squared Circle Expo 2021 Recap
The Squared Circle Expo debuted this weekend in Indianapolis, Indiana. I have been to hundreds of conventions and events and this was the best debut event I have ever attended.
It all started more than a year ago, when the debut of the SCE was originally announced. Unfortunately the pandemic caused it to be postponed twice, but the wait was well worth it, because the SCE would become bigger and better.
A positive sign for the event was seen throughout the rescheduling process. The folks behind the SCE kept an open line of communication on social media. When they knew something, all of their followers knew it quickly. In a time of great confusion, the promoters were direct, honest and forthcoming with every development.
When things cleared enough for them to set a new date, they did and the wrestler guest lineup soon started getting announced. What a lineup it was. Ultimately, more than 30 wrestling stars past and present were announced.
Then came announcements for panels, a cosplay contest, a night of wrestling and more. Every couple of days, it seemed another big announcement was made. While all of this was happening, the promoters were also dealing with the ever-changing health protocols.
Finally, May 14 arrived and the Squared Circle debuted. Again, right from the start, there were plenty of positive signs. The Will Call line ran smoothly and moved quickly. As we waited, wrestlers walked by to take their places at their tables. There was an undeniable buzz in the air.
I can't possibly recap every bit of the convention. I was literally busy from 5 p.m. Friday through midnight Saturday, except for a few hours of sleep. Even my list of selected highlights I pretty long.
- Madusa (Alundra Blayze) liked my press lanyard and asked to sign it (as if I'd refuse?)
- Dustin Rhodes greeted me by name when I approached his table
- I interviewed “The Fanny Pack Kid” Kal Herro for the first time.
- I experienced an “Excuuuuuuuse me” from Vickie Guerrero up close.
- “The History of Women's Wrestling” panel was immensely interesting.
- Andrew Anderson and Kevin Sullivan loved my friend's shirt and asked for a picture with him.
- I reconnected with so any friends like David, Will, Tony, John, Barry, Roy, Charles, Mitchell and more.
- Dr. Britt Baker, D.M.D. asked for pictures with some of the toddlers.
- I caught up with SCE folks Adolfo, Carrie, Ed, Heather, Adam and Troy.
- Shawna Reed asked about my podcast and I misunderstood, but we laughed about it.
- The Boogeyman did great poses with fans.
- Charles Wright (Papa Shango/The Godfather) called me Jay Leno.
- Booker T talked to me about throwing a ceremonial pitch for the Houston Astros.
There were so many other great moments, too. Literally every wrestling guest was great, spending as much time as possible with each fan to make that encounter special.
With so many wrestlers I wanted to meet, usually I would be in a frenzy trying to coordinate things, but the SCE promoters promised all wrestler guests would be at their tables for the entire convention, except for breaks for panels. This relieved all stress, knowing I could take my time and meet every one without worrying about missing any. I met all of them easily and some twice because I had extra time. That has never happened for me at any previous convention.
I woke up Sunday morning bummed that the convention was done, but once again the folks at SCE made an announcement to get me excited. The Squared Circle Expo II will return to the same location April 15-16, 2022. I can't wait!
For more info on the SCE, go to SquaredCircleX.com. Also follow SCE on social media. Lastly, check here, Patch.com, WrestlingFigs.com and GlobalWomensSportsRadio.com for my recurring coverage of the SCE.

On the Beat With Kal Herro at the Squared Circle Expo
I have known Kal Herro since he was a toddler at Great Lakes Championship Wrestling wrestling events his father David promoted in Wisconsin. I have watched him grow up from afar over these many years. Now, I am watching Kal live his dream as a wrestler.
Even as a youngster, you could tell Kal was destined for this. He was surrounded by wrestlers and wrestling. More importantly, he had charisma and personality right from the start. Over the years, he dabbled in and around the ring, taking part in segments on various shows.
Kal was a natural. The progression was also natural, never forced. From bit appearances on shows to actually wrestling in matches, the journey was a wonderful slow build to witness.
Recently Kal relocated from Wisconsin to Louisville to join Ohio Valley Wrestling. He is being trained by long-time friend Al Snow and Doug Basham. This is formal training, although Kal has essentially been training all his life.
Kal is known as "The Fanny Pack Kid." It's a natural and fun fit for Kal. I hesitate to call it a gimmick, because it's just Kal being Kal.
When I saw Kal was appearing at the Squared Circle Expo, I reached out to him about an interview. Ever the gracious young man, Kal quickly granted my request. At the event, I waited for a quiet time and approached Kal. This was an interview 10+ years in the making.
There was so much ground to cover, I could have talked to Kal for much longer, but I didn't want to take him away from the fans that long and I really only wanted an introductory type interview. I am hoping to get many more interviews with Kal down the line.
We talked about his transition to actual wrestling training, having his friend Al as his trainer, enjoying the moments and more. You can feel his passion and his excitement. You can also clearly see his personality. Wrestlers often talk about the "it" factor. This guy has it.
Later in the day, I talked to proud Pop David. I congratulated him on raising a great young man. I have watched these two interact for years. I see their social media posts. They have a relationship which is heartwarming.
I thank Kal for his time and consideration for the interview. I appreciate my friendship with Kal and David. They truly are #SuperFriends.
Our interview can be found at On the Beat With Kal Herro on YouTube. Enjoy the interview and then go follow "TheKalHerro" on social media. This "kid" is going places and I will enjoy watching his journey.

Happy Birthday, Laura!
Today is my eldest niece Laura's birthday. I won't be there in person to wish her a happy birthday, but I am doing so here.
Where does the time go? I remember riding the train downtown with her mom when she was pregnant with Laura. Fast forward so quickly and she is a beautiful, bright, smart adult. Did I mention with just the right amount of sass?
I am so proud of her. She's got more courage at her age than I ever did back then.
She claims to dislike my clown character, but I think she secretly likes it (or maybe more accurately likes to hate it). She has revealed a few characters of her own on occasion, although no clowns...yet.
From a purely selfish standpoint, one of my greatest memories was seeing Laura and her friend Karen around Mile 20 during the 2018 Marathon. I have serious doubts I would have finished if they weren't there. They get added points for making me crack up by wearing Johngy shirts.
The picture below is pure Laura. Why is she hugging a cactus? I don't know, nor will I argue with her. If she's doing it, there's a good reason (unless she just felt like doing it, in which case that's reason enough). Knowing her mom and Laura, Nanc probably told her to be careful around the cactus and Laura had to push it. LOL
Wherever you are celebrating today, I wish you a fantastic birthday, Laura! I love you!

Celebrity Jersey Cards #537 Rachel Folden & Courtney Gano
Celebrity Jersey Cards is a weekly series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebrities wearing sports jerseys. Today, I continue working my way alphabetically through all MLB teams.
When Rachel Folden was playing Little League in her native California, she probably never imagined she would one day be lead hitting lab tech and fourth coach for the Chicago Cubs’ Arizona Rookie League team in Mesa. Women have come a long way in pro sports, although there is still room for more progress. Folden played in the NPF (National Pro Fastpitch), with the Carolina Diamonds in 2012, and the Chicago Bandits from 2008-2012. Naturally, Folden's Celebrity Jersey Card has her in a Cubs jersey. She gets extra points for the cap and bat.
After starring for the University of Washington, Courtney Gano signed with the Chicago Bandits in 2018.The versatile Gano also plays for Team USA. Gano threw a first pitch for the Cubs to earn her Celebrity Jersey Card. The Bandits did not play in 2020 or 2021, but I hope to see Coco back in Rosemont for the 2022 season.Friday, May 14, 2021
On the Beat With the Dallas Wings 05/11/2021
The Dallas Wings held a press session from Training Camp featuring. Kayla Thornton started the session and was followed by Moriah Jefferson. That interview session can be found at On the Beat With the Dallas Wings 05/11/2021.
Thornton talked about being the team veteran and working on her defense in camp. At 28, forward Thornton is in the unique position as the team's oldest player. Undrafted out of the University of Texas at El Paso, Thornton signed with the Washington Mystics for the 2015 season. After spending the 2016 season away from the WNBA, she returned with the Wings in 2017 and has been there since. Now entering her fifth season with the Wings, Thornton finds herself as the team vet (in age and tenure), a role she relishes, but doesn't really consider much. It's still just business as usual.
Jefferson discussed the team jelling with all of the new players, including Charli Collier, the top pick in the recent draft, her training camp and the importance of a woman as a coach. Point guard Jefferson was a star at UConn before being selected with the second overall pick by the San Antonio Stars in the 2016 WNBA Draft. Prior to the 2019 season, Jefferson was traded to the Wings. Jefferson only trails Thornton and Isabelle Harrison as the team's oldest player.
Last season, the Wings were 8-14, in last place in the Western Conference. Because the WNBA lumps all teams together for the playoff standings, the Wings actually finished one game behind the Washington Mystics for the eighth and final playoff spot.
In addition to Collier, the Wings had three other first round draft picks. Chelsea Dungee, Dana Evans and Awak Kuier join Collier as the 2021 rookies. The youthful Wings have 14 players still on their roster. These players average 1.6 years of WNBA experience.
Vickie Johnson is the new coach. Johnson entered the WNBA as a player with the New York Liberty in 1997, after a stellar career at Louisiana Tech. Selected in the second round (12th overall), Johnson played nine seasons with the Liberty and four more with the San Antonio Stars before retiring. She began her coaching career as an assistant with the Stars in 2011. She was named coach of the Wings during the last offseason.
Jefferson talked about the importance of a woman and a former player becoming a coach. Recently, I also talked with former player Val Whiting about the same topic. With no disrespect to male coaches like Bill Laimbeer, Dan Hughes and any other, I think it is important for the league to promote former players into coaching and team management.
Go to WNBA.com for more info and news on the Wings and the WNBA. Also, check here, GlobalTravelerUSA.com, GlobalWomensSportsRadio.com and Patch.com for my recurring coverage.

On the Beat With Val Whiting
Earlier this week, I had the pleasure of interviewing former collegiate and pro basketball player Val Whiting for Global Women's Sports Radio. Our interview is at On the Beat With Val Whiting.
Yesterday, I had the pleasure of interviewing former collegiate and pro basketball player Val Whiting. A multi-time champ at several levels of ball, Val continues to have an impact on the game she loves.
A four time high school champ, Val went to Stanford, where she added two more titles to her growing resume. Val was a vital part of three Final Four teams and four Pac-12 Championships. In addition to her team's success, her honors include two-time National Player of the Year Finalist, two-time All-American, two-time Pac-12 Player of the Year and ESPY Award Nominee.
After graduating from Stanford with a degree in Biology, she was accepted into many medical schools, but opted to delay med school for a pro playing career. Val played in the American Basketball League, the WNBA and overseas.
Along the way, Val became a Certified Life Skills Instructor and a Certified Performance Edge Coach. She is also on the National Advisory Board for the Positive Coaching Alliance.
The “Hype Woman” has mentored thousands of athletes. She is deeply committed to youth development. She was recognized as one of her state's “Top 35 Women in Business.” Val also serves on the National Advisory Board for the Positive Coaching Alliance.
On IamCoachVal.com, Val offers many services and products, designed to coach, teach and mentor. As a speaker, Val relies on a wealth of experience and success to connect with the audience.
Coach Val discussed all of this during our interview, starting with her time at Stanford. She talked about winning titles and then not winning one. The subject turned to her pro playing career, including her thoughts on playing overseas and pro ball then and now. She gave great insight into the current state of the WNBA, including the social justice movement, the future growth and more.
Near the end of the interview, I mentioned Val should write a book. She has a fascinating story to tell, from being the object of bullying, racism and other forms of ugly behavior to becoming a success story on and off the court to guiding today's youth to successful paths. I was pleasantly surprised when Val stated she is in fact doing just that. Val's book should be released late summer or fall this year and I can't wait to read it.
I asked Val to come back for an update interview upon the release of her book. When that happens, we will bring it right here.
We really appreciate Val's time and consideration in giving us a glimpse into her life. We encourage everyone to check out IamcoachVal.com.

On the Beat With the Las Vegas Aces 05/09/2021
The Las Vegas Aces held a coaches press session yesterday. Head Coach Bill Laimbeer and recently-hired assistant coach Sugar Rodgers faced the media.
Coach Laimbeer discussed the team's performance so far. While he did not like the “sloppy” effort in their latest preseason game, which included 27 turnovers, he also quickly stated he doesn't care about wins and losses in the preseason.
The talk turned to his recent hiring of Rodgers as an assistant. Coach Laimbeer obviously has a lot of respect for Rodgers. They have a long history together, going back to their years with the New York Liberty. Laimbeer described Rodgers as more of a players' coach than he is, jokingly saying he will tell her to fix the problems he made.
Coach Laimbeer also gave a glimpse into his younger days. Fittingly on Mother's Day, he talked about the role his mom played in his athletic career.
Rodgers also spent much of her time discussing her path to coaching and her coaching style. Again, it is obvious she has a lot of respect for Coach Laimbeer.
Talk then turned to “They Better Call Me Sugar,” her autobiography. Rodgers felt it was the right time to do it. She tells her story of overcoming the odds.
This is a great hire by Coach Laimbeer. This is one of those little moves, of the court, that will pay big dividends. Rodgers will bring a youthful outlook, having just retired from active play.
Ta'Shauna “Sugar” Rodgers was a star at Georgetown, before being selected by the Minnesota Lynx in the second round (14th overall) of the 2013 WNBA Draft. After one season with the Lynx, she was traded to the Liberty, with whom she played through the 2018 season.
After the 2018 season, Rodgers was traded to the Aces in a four team swap. She played two seasons with the Aces before retiring after last season.
The Aces open their season on the road in Seattle, facing last season's champion Storm. Many experts predict that will be a preview of a repeat of last season, when the two teams met in the Finals, won by the Storm.

On the Beat With the Seattle Storm 05/09/2021
The Seattle Storm held media sessions on Sunday from Training Camp. Coach Dan Hughes and players Breanna Stewart, Sue Bird and Jewell Loyd fielded questions.
The reigning champs had one major change in the offseason. Coach Hughes returned from a one year absence from the sidelines due to health concerns in the COVID pandemic. Assistant Gary Kloppenburg took the helm and guided the Storm to the title, but now returns to his assistance coach role.
Coach Hughes discussed how his time away from the bench might have affected his perspective. Of course, despite not coaching the team on a daily basis, Coach Hughes was still involved in the team. The change in coaching didn't affect the team last season, nor is it expected to disrupt the tam this season with Coach Hughes back. It's still the same system.
Coach Hughes, Stewart, Bird and Loyd all gave their thoughts on the state of the league and the ongoing social justice movements. All agreed both are doing great, heading in the right direction, but still having a way to go.
A good portion of Stewart's session focused on her recent engagement to Phoenix Mercury player Marta Xargay. Stewie took us through the process leading to the big moment. She also talked about playing against her betrothed in games.
Bird also talked about pre-game feelings. After playing so long and achieving a high level of success, Bird still gets excited, but the butterflies have mostly been replaced by a calmness. She assured us she is still just as fired up though.
Lastly Loyd talked about being included in the new mural by artists Mari Shibuya an Zahyr Lauren. Located a block away from the Storm's home at Climate Pledge Arena, the mural measures 50 feet by 20 feet and features Loyd, Stewart and Bird.
Loyd also talked about her stint as an assistant coach on Doug Bruno's staff at DePaul this last season. Loyd has a long relationship with Bruno and was happy to coach the Blue Demons. She was quick to state she has no intention of going into coaching, but she wanted t help the young athletes and give back a bit.
Lastly, I got Loyd to talk a bit about Chicago food. A native of Lincolnwood, a suburb just north of Chicago and one block from where I live, Loyd mentioned Lou Malnati's Portillo's, East of Edens and Dear Franks. Aside from being a star player, I can tell from my experience, Loyd has excellent taste in dining options.
The Storm open their regular season Saturday, when they host the Las Vegas Aces. The Storm and Aces met in the WNBA Finals last season, after having identical 18-4 records in the season. The Aces, Storm and Chicago Sky are considered favorites to win it all this year.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #536 Bernie Federko & Paul Kariya
Celebrity Jersey Cards is a weekly series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebrities wearing sports jerseys. Today, I continue working my way alphabetically through all MLB teams.
Bernie Federko was selected seventh overall by the Stt. Louis Blues in the 1976 NHL draft. He went on to play 13 seasons for the Blues and one final season with the Detroit Red Wings. The Blues retired his #24 and he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2002. When the Cardinals honored the St. Louis legend, he threw a strike and won a spot on a Celebrity Jersey Card.

On the Beat With the Chicago Sky 05/06/2021
The Chicago Sky held an abbreviated media session today from training camp. It was Rookie Day, as Coach James Wade was joined by newcomers Sierra Campisano and Kobi Thornton.
Campisano and Thornton discussed the challenges of transitioning to the WNBA. All rookies face a tough situation, but the Sky have a tougher than usual camp, as they are loaded with talent.
Coach Wade addressed the issue of added depth for parts of the season when regular rostered players are not available. He also talked about the point guard battle, the team's first exhibition game on Sunday, working on team defense and Candace Parker.
Coach Wade laughed and stated I caught him off guard with a question about pressure coming from some predictions of winning the title. He gave a great answer, addressing the specific question, but also relating it to life.
He ended the session as he usually does, by reminding all to maintain social distance and to continue masking up. Coach Wade continues to impress me with his demeanor and attitude. I predicted a Sky title this season and I grow more confident in that every day.
As for forward Campisano, in her final season at Cal Poly, she averaged 15.8 points and 8.7 rebounds per game, while shooting 44.1% from the field and 29.7% from beyond the arc. She also earned All-Conference First Team honors. Coming out of high school, she ranked as the number 14 overall recruit in the country. She started at the University of Oregon, before transferring to Cal Poly after two seasons. Last month, Campisano signed a training camp contract with the Sky.
Fellow forward Thornton starred at Clemson, where she shot 47.3% from the field and 22.2% from three point land during her four seasons there. She also averaged 12.0 points and 6.4 rebounds for her career. She is one of only 15 players in program history to rach 1,000 points and 500 rebounds. Thornton was selected by the Atlanta Dream in the third round of the 2020 WNBA Draft, but did not make the team.
Campisano and Thornton face an uphill battle to make the Sky roster. Minimally, they will serve as valuable players in camp, while also giving the coaching staff a chance to evaluate them for future signing in case of injuries or while other players are absent. There's still a chance they make the roster or impress another team enough to acquire them.
This Sunday, the Sky have their first exhibition game against the Fever in Indiana. The Sky open their season on Saturday, May 15 when the travel to Atlanta to face the Dream.

On the Beat With the Phoenix Mercury 05/06/2021
The Phoenix Mercury held a press session from training camp. Players, Diana Taurasi, Brittney Griner, Skylar Diggins-Smith and Kia Nurse discussed a variety of topics from very serious issues to lighter, but still important subjects.
Taurasi led off by discussing her offseason routine. For Taurasi, playing is a year-round job. During the season her job is on the court, but in the offseason, she works out daily to stay in top shape. She's always looking for new physical challenges to keep getting better.
She talked about being considered a G.O.A.T. Ever humble, she called it an honor, but was quick to point out it's a team effort and there are many great players.
Lastly, she discussed, or I should say dismissed, social media. While she acknowledges it has positives and it serves a purpose, she calmly stated it doesn't impact her at all.
Griner continued the talk about social media, basically echoing Taurasi. Griner has battled bullies most of her life and has risen above it all. Social media bullies or unfair criticisms won't affect her much. She did admit she is human like everyone else and sometimes things do get to her, but mostly she is unaffected. Griner also compared playing in Russia to the WNBA.
Skylar Diggins-Smith was next, talking about the upcoming season. She also gave her thoughts on the WNBA branding, along with the messages and public stance of the league and the players. This was one of the most serious parts of the session. She was direct and eloquent as she discussed the league's actions and impact.
Mercury newcomer Nurse finished the session on a lighter note as she discussed her personal branding. She has exciting things coming up and she was happy to discuss upcoming releases, as well as promising she sill continue to bring the heat.
Nurs finished by delving into the topic of expansion, specifically into Toronto, Canada. A native of Ontario, Nurse felt Toronto would be a great place for a team and the WNBA will eventually expand. She gave her thoughts on being involved in ownership, chuckling that the league wouldn't let that happen if she was still playing.
Today's session was very interesting The four athletes come from different places with unique perspectives. They are in different parts of their careers, but all united for the team and in the efforts of the league. It was a fun session, yet also highlighted by serious, frank discussions of the growth of the league on and of the court.
The media session is at On the Beat With the Phoenix Mercury 05/06/2021. Go to WNBA.com for more info on the Mercury and the WNBA. Check back here for my coverage, as well as GlobalTravelerUSA.com, GlobalWomensSportsRadio.com and Patch.com.

On the Beat With the Las Vegas Aces 05/03/2021
The Las Vegas Aces held several press sessions from their training camp on Monday. Head Coach Bill Laimbeer, A'ja Wilson, Liz Cambage and Kelsey Plum took turns fielding questions.
The main theme throughout all the sessions was the seemingly new level of competition in the WNBA. With several free agents changing teams, a few significant trades and a new class of draftees, more teams than ever are poised to make a run at the WNBA title.
Coach Laimbeer mentioned he felt at least six teams were true title contenders. (I presume it would be six among Seattle, Las Vegas, Chicago, Connecticut, Los Angeles, Minnesota and Phoenix.) He continued the league has ebbs and flows. It's the nature of the league and the nature of sports.
The players agreed with Laimbeer that there is a high level of competition, but it really is just business as usual. They can only do their best with the schedule as is. Everything else will take care of itself.
I asked Wilson about her statue, which was erected earlier this year at South Carolina, where she starred on the courts. Wilson discussed the significance to her personally, as well as to women and women athletes. It's something that gives her great pride, but she is humble when discussing it, stating she isn't the first nor will she be the last woman to get a statue, but it still means alot.
Cambage and Plum talked about returning to the team. Plum suffered an injured Achilles tendon and missed the 2020 season. Cambage sat out the 2020 season due to health concerns. Both players are excited to return and are in playing shape already.
An added highlight for me was Cambage's interactions with Las Vegas Director of Media Relations John "Giggy" Maxwell as they tried adjusting the backdrop and the lighting. Cambage also had fun interactions with the press about her musical choices. Aside from being a star on the court, she is a very popular disc jockey and certainly knows her music.
The athletes also rated the Las Vegas black jerseys as their favorites among the new jerseys. They liked the better fit and styles. They also stated their opinions tend to change as they change uniforms, but overall black takes a slight advantage.
The interview session is at On the Beat With the LasVegas Aces 05/03.2021

On the Beat With the New York Liberty 05/01/2021
The New York Liberty held a post-practice media session featuring Sabrina Ionescu and Janelle Bailey. Practice ran a little long and the players were a bit pressed for time, but there was still some interesting subjects discussed.
Second year guard Ionescu started by talking about the importance of family. Her family is a great source of support and she relies on them and appreciates them greatly. She then went on to talk about her mindset through and after the injury. Unplanned and unwanted time away from the court gave her a renewed and greater appreciation for all she has and where she is. She also talked about the difference in camp this year versus camp in the Bubble last year.
Ionescu is coming back from an ankle injury suffered in the third game last season. The injury took her out of the entire season.
As the NCAA all-time leader in career triple-doubles, the Pac-12 Conference all-time leader in assists, and the only NCAA Division I basketball player to record 2,000 points, 1,000 assists, and 1,000 rebounds in a career, Ionescu had built quite a legacy at Oregon. Her play led the Liberty to select her with the first overall pick in the 2020 WNBA Draft. Big things were expect, but the injury derailed those plans. Heading into this season, Ionescu says she is fully recovered and ready to producing for the Liberty.
Rookie center Janelle Bailey went undrafted after a stellar career at North Carolina. Bailey was the 5th player in school history to total 1,700 career points and 1,000 rebounds. She also was among the 10 semifinalists for the Lisa Leslie Award as the nation’s top center each of her final 3 seasons. Although she surprisingly was not drafted, she quickly signed with the Liberty.
Born in Brooklyn, Bailey expressed her happiness with joining her native town team. She also noted despite being raised in North Carolina, she has a special place and many family and friends in the New York area. Bailey talked about the experience going from undrafted to signing with the team. She also talked about her biggest challenges and adjustments she'll need to make in camp to make the team.
May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a fact not lost on Bailey. She talked about the importance of mental health awareness for her and her team, what all are doing to promote awareness and what everyone else, especially those affected, should do. It is just one more important cause the WNBA is addressing.
The Liberty opens the 2021 WNBA season against the Indiana Fever at the Barclays Center. The team finished a woeful 2-20 last season, good for last place overall. I am not going on a limb in saying they will be vastly improved this season.
The interview session can be found at On the Beat With the New York Liberty 05/01/2021. Also, check WNBA.com for info on the Liberty and the league. Check here, GlobalTravelerUSA.com, Patch.com and GlobalWomensSportsRadio.com for my recurring coverage.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #534 James Beckum & James Portier
Celebrity Jersey Cards is a weekly series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebrities wearing sports jerseys. Today, I continue working my way alphabetically through all MLB teams.
Born in Baltimore, James Beckum adopted Milwaukee as his home. He started his Negor League career in 1950, but military service interrupted it. Returning, he played for the East St. Louis Giants. More importantly, he organized a youth baseball league in Milwaukee. The Beckum-Stapleton Little League is the longest-running inner-city baseball program in the country. Beckum was among several Negro League players honored by the Milwaukee Brewers. Beckum looked great tossing a first pitch and earning his Celebrity Jersey Card.
Catcher-outfielder James Portier played in the Negro Leagues with the Indianapolis Clowns, Key West Eagles, Victoria Eagles and New York Black Yankees. Some sources indicate he did play in the MLB with the Brooklyn Dodgers, but I found no confirmation of that. Like Beckum, Portier was on hand when the Brewers honored the Negro Leaguers. The elderly Portier showed great form tossing the first pitch and earning his Celebrity Jersey Card.Saturday, May 1, 2021
The Squared Circle Expo Is Fast Approaching!
The Squared Circle is three weeks away. After a necessary postponement due to the pandemic, the Squared Circle Expo will debut in Indianapolis May 14-15. I have been to hundreds of conventions and I have no doubts this one is going to be special.
The convention organizers have been diligent in keeping everyone updated as the process went along. From announcing the delay to progress through the wait to the procedures at the convention. They have gone way above and beyond to make it safe and enjoyable.
Also above and beyond is the announced superstar guest list. This is a Hall of Fame lineup. The entire guest roster announced so far is Madusa, The Boogeyman, Jake Roberts, Booker T, Kane, Vickie Guerrero, The Godfather/Papa Shango, Dr. Britt Baker, Darby Allin, Tay Conti, Dustin Rhodes, Sammy Guevara, Renee Michelle, Dan Severn, The Highlanders, Duke Droses, Shar Boy, The Gunn Club (Billy, Austin and Colten), Francine, The Headbangers, JTG, Chris Masters, Francine and Melina Perez.
I have met about half of these legends. I look forward to meeting the ones I have not met yet, but also seeing the others again. Charles Wright (The Godfather/Papa Shango) is always fun, like when he calls me "Jay Leno" or chokes me.
Melina Perez is one I really want to see again. Melina is one of the most underrated women of the WWE. She doesn't get the credit she deserves from her time in the WWE. She was a solid manager and a multi-time champ, plus she had one of the greatest ring entrances ever.
The Squared Circle Expo promises to deliver a unique fan experience. Promoted as a " convention dedicated to the culture of professional wrestling and sports entertainment," the Squared Circle Expo takes the best elements of conventions and adds a few new ones to deliver a unique fan experience. The two day event will include wrestling superstars, meet and greets, photo ops, special events, seminars, memorabilia vendors, Q&A panels and more. There will even be a live wrestling show on Saturday night.
I'll be "On the Beat" all weekend and have reports on social media, as well as recaps here and on GlobalWomensSportsRadio.com. Until then, go to SquaredCircleX.com for all the current info and updates.
