Thank You Wizard World

Yesterday and Tuesday, I featured the interviews with Thomas Ian Nicholas and Zombie Bit Me from Wizard World.  My full recap can be found on the Patch at On the Beat at Wizard World Chicago 2017.  Today, I will complete my current coverage with a huge thanks to the Wizard World staff.
For me, it started many years ago with Jerry Milani, the Public Relations Manager.  The Pride of Fordham University has become more than just my Wizard World contact.  I consider Jerry to be a friend, as well.
Every interview I have gotten over the years at Wizard World are because of Jerry.  (All of those interviews can be found on the Johngy's Beat Wizard World playlist on YouTube.)  I owe him immensely just for my interview with actress Lauren Holly (one of my all-time celeb crushes).
Jerry is my main contact, but there are so many others within the organization who make Wizard World a success.  I can honestly say, I think the staff was more helpful, knowledgeable and organized than ever.
Just when I thought I had seen it all at Wizard World, they brought in Kato Kaelin to be the Celebrity Host.  Kato wasn't just a Celebrity figurehead.  He was working the entire time.  He mingled and engaged with the crowd.  He took hundreds (thousands?) of pictures with fans.  He joked and kept a running banter throughout the weekend.  He simply was amazing and one of the real highlights for a lot of the fans.
As I wrote in the Patch recap, I do not work for Wizard World.  Nobody there has ever told me what to write (or not to write).  I often praise Wizard World, because it is deserving of praise.  I enjoy my time there and I want everyone to experience the pop culture greatness that is Wizard World.
I thank all of the celebrities for their time and consideration last weekend.  I thank my readers (here, on WrestlingFigs.com, the Patch.com, GlobalTravelerUSA.com and elsewhere) for your support.  I thank Jerry for his time, patience and friendship.  I thank Wizard World for letting me do what I love doing.

On the Beat With Zombie Bit Me at Wizard World Chicago 2017

Cosplaying is a huge part of Wizard World.  Many attendees arrive in full costumes and spend a good portion of their time posing for pictures with other attendees.  Zombie Bit Me is a cosplayer who has taken it to another level.
Zombie Bit Me, who describes herself as "deliciously undead," is brought in by many comic cons and other fan events.  She is an attraction all by herself and by the looks of the line to meet her at Wizard World Chicago, she is a very popular attraction.
Being my job as a reporter, I researched her a bit and discovered there is much more to Zombie Bit Me than just being a beautiful cosplayer.  She is in the process of producing her own comic book.  We talked about that comic book in the interview below.
In an event filled with colorful characters and celebrities of all types, I love finding the hidden gems like Zombie Bit Me.  She made it fun for all who came near her and it seemed like she was having a good time, too.  That makes for a perfect fan experience.
She has certainly gained a fan in me.  I will be looking forward to the release of her comic book and hopefully to seeing her at future events.
You can learn more about her, including seeing a lot of her other cosplay ensembles at ZombieBit.me.  You can also follow Zombie Bit Me on Facebook, Zombie Bit Me on twitter and Zombie Bit Me on Instagram.  Hopefully, you will also see her here in the future.
Thank you to Wizard World for the continued hospitality.  Of course, a big thanks to Zombie Bit Me for taking a break from her many fans to talk to us for a moment.  It was my pleasure!

On the Beat With Thomas Ian Nicholas at Wizard World Chicago 2017

We last saw and interviewed Thomas Ian Nicholas a few months back.  While at Wizard World Chicago this last weekend, we had the chance to get an update from him.
As Henry Rowengartner in Rookie of the Year, he was the kid pitcher who led the Chicago Cubs to the World Series.  That earned him a place in the hearts of long-suffering fans fo the team and also a yearly invite to throw out the first pitch at a game.  Since then, he has carved out quite a resume of acting roles, including Kevin Myers in the American Pie franchise.
He has also made his mark on the music scene.  The Thomas Nicholas Band has been performing for years and recently did a show in Chicago.
At Wizard World Chicago, he was meeting fans and promoting Handbook For Mortals, by Lani Sarem.  He will be producing and acting in the upcoming film.
He also produced and stars in The Lost Tree, to be released October 13.  Also, in January 2018, Living Among Us will be released.  As Thomas states, unfortunately, that is also John Heard's last movie.
For more info on Thomas or his projects, you can go to the Handbook For Mortals Facebook page, the Lost Tree Facebook page, the Living Among Us Facebook page and ThomasIanNicholas.com.  You can also check back here for future update on Thomas and his projects.
I want to thank the fine folks at Wizard World for their hospitality always.  I also want to extend my sincere gratitude to Thomas for his time and consideration.  Like all celebs there, Thomas is very busy at Wizard World.  Giving us a few minutes of his time is very appreciated.  Thomas is funny, interesting and just a good guy.  I'm a reporter, but I'm also a fan!

Friendly Encounters: Kato Kaelin and Gabe Baron

Friendly Encounters is a weekly series about friends who have met celebrities.

Wizard World is always a great comic con for meeting celebrities.  It's also a great place for spending fun time with friends.  Today's Friendly Encounters is a little of both.
I actually met Gabe Baron several years ago at Wizard World, when he was promoting the debut of Resistance Pro Wrestling, a new independent wrestling company he started with his brother Jacques.  Over the years, I have had many laughs with Gabe, as we discussed 1970's television sitcoms, sushi, wrestling and any other similar serious nonsense.  I'm proud to know Gabe and even prouder to be his friend.  He's just a really good person.
This year, Gabe was once again at Wizard World with Jacques.  They were running their booth full of all sorts of pop culture items (movie posters, figures, etc.)  Of course, I spent some quality time hanging around that booth.
This year, Kato Kaelin was the Celebrity "Host" of Wizard World and it wasn't just an honorary position.  Kaelin worked it all weekend and the crowd loved him.
While talking to Gabe, he mentioned he had not seen Kaelin.  That was all I needed to hear.  I dragged him out to the lobby, but Kaelin was on break.  Gabe went back to his booth and I went about my business, too.  A little while later, I saw Kaelin back in action so I beelined back to grab Gabe.
Once we got out in the lobby, the fun really began.  Kaelin, who was familiar with me from earlier interactions, posed for the pic with Gabe, but then chided me repeatedly for not using the flash for Gabe's picture.  Finally, he took my phone and set up the flash himself!  I took the pic and everyone was happy, especially Kaelin (although I have to say, in my defense, the pictures with or without the flash weren't much different).  Either way, the encounter was extra fun.
My coverage of Wizard World will continue here tomorrow.  The next Wizard World will be in Madison, WI.  Check WizardWorld.com for all of the details and for a full listing of all of their events.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #337 Joe Namath & Cheryl Tiegs

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a weekly series in which I create virtual trading cards for jersey-clad celebrities.  Today, we continue working our way alphabetically through Major League Baseball.

A native of Beaver Falls, PA, Broadway Joe Namath made his name in New York leading the Jets to a Super Bowl and guaranteeing the win.  He is one of the most memorable athletes on and off the field.  Namath's Celebrity Jerey Card bends the time continuum because the Rays were not in existence when this card would have been released.  Namath gets extra points for the inclusion of Florida Marlins coach Joe Espada and an umpire.
Minnesota born Cheryl Tiegs is one of the most iconic figures of the 20th century.  Her posters and Sports Illustrated appearances rocketed her to fame.  Like Namath, her Celebrity Jersey Card breaks the time continuum, but nobody is complaining.  Still, I would suggest she ditch the belt (or whatever that thing is around her waist).

James Finn Garner at Wizard World Chicago 2015

Sometimes it is just random luck which leads to friendships and good memories.  Such has been my experience with Chicago-based author James Finn Garner.
At C2E2 several years ago, we interviewed JFG because his Rex Koko book intrigued me.  I had never seen any clown noir prior.  I have since learned there is more clown noir out there, but I will maintain that JFG puts out the best.
Since then, I have met him many times at various conventions.  He is usually with fellow Chicagoan Paul Erickson (the World's Foremost Nerd Parodist).  Together they are pure gold.
JFG is usually dressed in full Rex Koko garb (and he has a large bowl of circus peanuts to complete the effect).  I have often told him that in a convention full of colorful characters, he always stands out.  I always look forward to reconnecting with JFG (and Paul, for that matter).
You can follow James Finn Garner on twitter to get all of his musings.  You can also check out Bardball.com, to get more updates on Rex Koko and his other projects.  If you're in the Chicago area this weekend, check out JFG and lots of other great creative folks at Wizard World.
There is a lot more to this man than a ragged raincoat!  I'm not just promoting a pal either.  I have the entire Rex Koko series and I look forward to more Rex Koko adventures.

Carrie Fisher and Friends at Wizard World Chicago 2016

My longtime dear friend Jason Fleigel and Ashley Prester are two of the biggest Star Wars fans I know.  They have huge collections from the iconic movie and have met several of the actors.
One principle part they had not met was Carrier Fisher (aka Princess Leia.  That changed at Wizard World Chicago 2016.
I am not a huge Star Wars fan, but I did like the original (which I guess is now listed as the 4th?).  I do respect the enormity of meeting Fisher though, but I wouldn't have done it for myself.
Knowing how big of fans these two are, I got us to meet the legendary actress.  I have to say, they were pretty giddy as we awaited Fisher's arrival.  I say this not to mock them, but becauase I was happy that I helped make this happen for them.  I can appreciate the giddiness, as I have felt it many times in anticipation of meeting some of my favorites (Roddy Piper, Lauren Holly etc.).
As expected, Fisher had a huge line, but she did her best to make it special for everyone.  She made sure to reach out to all of us in the photo.  (Yes, that is her hand on my face, not Jason's, as one of my friends poked).
This year, through my press passes and other deals I have worked, I have gotten some of my friends to meet their favorites.  I've met so many of mine and it feels good to help others meet some of their favorites.  It's cool to see the gleam in their eye (which I know is in mine at times).  It's just one more fun thing at these conventions.

Gene Simmons at Wizard World St. Louis 2017

A couple weeks ago, I was part of the media attending Wizard World in St. Louis.  The celebrity headliner was Gene Simmons.  We were involved in several different events involving Simmons and each was a great experience.  My recap of the weekend is on Patch.com at On the Beat at Wizard World St. Louis 2017 and also on Global Traveler at Weekend in St. Louis.
Our first interaction with Simmons occurred at his panel.  He started it off by walking off the stage to take his place right in front of the audience.  He stated that he wanted to be among the people.  It was a classy move, which was greeted with thunderous applause.  The session was interesting as Simmons discussed his career and current projects and the he took questions.
That was immediately followed by the photo session.  With several hundred people in line to get a picture with Simmons, you know the moment will be quick, but Simmons still made it special.  He greeted us and thanked us.  He also made small talk about the weather.  For an instance like this, it was about as good as it gets.  Once again, Simmons was great.
Later in the day, we went to the Pageant to see Simmons and his band perform.  The Pageant is a cool, intimate venue, seating about 2,000.  The low ticket price had me thinking Simmons might perform a few songs.  I was way wrong.
Simmons rocked the stage for about two hours, mixing in Kiss stuff with his solo music.  He ended with a few songs as a tribute to Chuck Berry.  Simmons also talked a bit from the stage, just enough to keep it fun, but not too much to detract from the show.
Simmons is 67 years old and he still has that charisma and stage presence.  The man is a music legend and he still grabs the audience.  It was an amazing weekend with Simmons and I didn't hear one bad story from any of the attendees.
I give a lot of credit to Simmons.  While one might think this is standard behavior, some celebrities at comic cons are not as personable as Simmons.  When a star (especially of his stature) goes above and beyond, I must applaud it and make it known.
Thank you to Simmons for a fantastic experience.  Kiss was my first favorite rock band.  I have now met three of the original four Kiss members (I'm missing Paul Stanley).  Seeing him brought me right back to that teenager listening to Rock and Roll Over.  Interacting with him was well beyond the imagination of my younger self and I still can't believe it happened.
Thank you also to the staff at Wizard World for their hospitality.  It is a pleasure working with this fine organization.  Check out WizardWorld.com for future conventions.

On the Beat With Wesley Eure and Kathy Coleman of "Land of the Lost"

Saturday morning television was a lot different when I was a kid.  It was a lot less high tech, but it was a lot more fun.  A huge part of my Saturday television experience was "Land of the Lost, " which ran for 3 seasons starting in 1974.
The Marshall family was on a camping trip and fell through a portal into an alternate universe.  This "land of the lost" was filled with dinosaurs, a civilization of people called "Pakuni" and lizard creatures called "Sleestak."  Wesley Eure and Kathy Coleman portrayed the Marshall children.
The show was simple, even though the concept was a bit intricate.  Were they lost in their world or were they living parallel lives?  How did the portal and crystals work?  None of that really mattered though, because the heart of the show was the Marshall family and the interaction with each other and their new surroundings.
When I saw Wesley and Kathy would be appearing at the Wheaton All-Night Flea Market, I contacted both about doing an interview.  Both responded positively and quickly.  I had so many questions I would have loved to ask them, but I knew they would be very busy at the event.  Instead, I opted for just a fun, light interview.
Wesley and Kathy jumped into the fun immediately by belting out the theme song (originally sung by Wesley).  I'm sure I did not add to the harmony by jumping in, but when would I have another chance to sing with these two?  I had to join the fun.
We sailed through a short interview.  They talked about the fun they had and are having and their closeness.  Obviously, they are good friends (unrelated siblings, you might say).  We ended, appropriately, with the closing theme.
I cannot tell you how cool this was for me.  This is one of those moments I never could have imagined 40 years ago when I was watching them on Saturday morning.  I wasn't the only one basking in the nostalgia.  They were easily the most popular guests at the event.  Fans presented them with cool gifts, too.  Wesley and Kathy could not have been nicer or more appreciative of the fans.
Wesley and Kathy came well-prepared, too.  They had many 8x10's and Kathy brought her book, Run, Holly, Run! (available on Amazon).  They also brought a raft and paddles for cool photo ops!
This was tremendously fun for me.  For a few minutes, I was right back there watching their show as a kid.  I sincerely appreciate their time and consideration.  You can follow both of them on Facebook and hopefully you get a chance to meet them at a future convention!
Thank you Wesley and Kathy for entertainment back then and for being so awesome now.  I hope to catch you both again.

The 2017 Chicago Bandits

The Chicago Bandits lost to the USSSA Pride in the National Pro Fastpitch playoffs to end their 2017 season.  They battled until the end, but they came up just a bit short.
Despite the early exit from the playoffs, the Bandits had a successful season considering all that happened.  In the season of change (owner, GM, manager, coaches, players etc), the Bandits hung tough and played exciting softball all season.  They finished in 4th place with a record of 25-24, 1/2 game behind the Akron Racers for 3rd place.
Once again, I was fortunate enough to interview everyone on the team (except for Danielle O'Toole, who only made 3 appearances due to her Team USA commitments).  Those interviews (and the previous 3 years of interviews with the Bandits) can be found at Johngy's Beat Chicago Bandits YouTube playlist.
I want to thank everyone involved with the Bandits for their hospitality and friendship.  It starts at the top with GM Toni Calmeyn.  Director of Media Relations Jason Lowenthal was extremely cooperative in facilitating our interviews.  Broadcaster Mike Knezevich and PA announcer Doug Meffley always welcomed me in the booth.  Shifty Shiffman gave us plenty of news and good stories from the past and present.  Jourdan Skirha and the in-game entertainment crew were a lot of fun and they didn't kick me out of their bullpen area.  Bandit Nation's Sheri Samson, Mark Pandocchi, CA Stevens, Chris Bejcek, Kevin Mooney, Jonathan Cimaglio and all others welcomed me into their fold.  Many parents of the Bandits befriended and supported me in my efforts.  The Aussie contingent shared and supported our interviews.
Lastly, thanks to the Bandits.  These ladies are not only elite athletes, but wonderful young women.  Thank you Shelby Turnier, Danielle O'Toole, Ellen Roberts, Lacey Waldrop, Kaia Parnaby, Sierra Hyland, Haylie Wagner, Breanna Wonderly, Taylore Fuller, Taylah Tsitsikronis, Sahvanna Jaquish, Megan Blank, Emily Carosone, Kristen Brown, Abby Ramirez, Natalie Hernandez, Stacey McManus, Stacy May-Johnson, Brenna Moss, Sammy Marshall, Rachel Lack, Samantha Pool, Chelsea Forkin, Danielle Zymkowitz, Emily Crane and Alexa Peterson!
I loved covering this team.  It's been 4 seasons and it keep getting better.  I look forward to more fun in 2018 and hope to see a bunch more friends out there in Rosemont.  For more information check out ChicagoBandits.com.  It's only about 284 days until the 2018 season!

Friendly Encounters: Sammy, Kathy and David Marshall

Friendly Encounters is a weekly series about friends who have met celebrities.

Today, I am cheating just a little bit.  Technically, this should be Family Encounters, but it's my site, my rules and I wanted to feature Sammy Marshall and her parents.
Sammy was a star softball player at Western Illinois University.  After being drafted by the Chicago Bandits in 2015, she had 6 at bats and scored 11 runs and had 6 stolen bases in her rookie season.  The speedy Sammy totally blossomed last season, hitting .244, with 22 runs scored and 8 rbi's in 127 at bats.  She also led the NPF with 16 steals (in 18 attempts).
It was a real joy watching Sammy make the most of her playing time.  She became a leader on and off the field.
It also has been a lot of fun knowing he parents, David and Kathy.  They are regularly at the games, cheering for Sammy and the Bandits.  They are dedicated, excited and entertaining.  It's nice to see the family bonds.
Sammy is a real success story.  She's a local area lady who is doing great things on and off the field and she is destined to do even greater things in life.  At such a young age, she shows a lot of maturity and wisdom, without losing any of her fun nature.  She's a great role model and one of the most popular Bandits.  Sammy and her parents are another example of what makes this experience so wonderful for me.
I thank Sammy for her time always.  I thank Mr. and Mrs. Marshall for their support of the team and for my coverage.  They have done a fantastic job in raising Sammy and they should be proud.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #336 Chuck Norris & Jason Dufner

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a weekly series in which I create virtual trading cards for jersey-clad celebrities.  Today, we continue working our way alphabetically through Major Leaue Baseball.

Hasn't Chuck Norris pretty much done everything?  Seriously, the guy even has a Facebook meme dedictaed to him.  Born in Ryan, OK, the Texas Rangers were the closest baseball team to him growing up.  Coincidentally, he would later star in Walker, Texas Ranger.  Of course, his biggest accomplishment is appearing on a Celebrity Jersey Card!  Of course, at the time of this card, the Rangers were still the Washington Senators, but Norris can do what he wants.
Golfer Jason Dufner is a native of Cleveland, OH.  He has won one major championship and is a four time winner on the PGA tour.  His laid-back mannerisms have lead to the term "Dufnering," although he appears a bit animated on his Celebrity Jersey Card.

On the Beat With Mike Carey and Chris Margetis at Flashback Weekend 2017

I first met Mike Carey (M.J. Carey) at the premiere of Fancypants back in 2011.  I later learned that Cuzz Gekas knew Carey.  I have seen Carey every year since at Flashback Weekend.
This year, Mike was joined by Chris Margetis.  They were promoting their project The Manson Brothers Midnight Zombie Massacre.  They explain the concept in our interview below, but the movie does contain wrestling, zombies, mayhem and other fun stuff.
It's still a bit early in the whole production process of The Manson Brothers Midnight Zombie Massacre.  The movie is in pre-production.  They don't even have a website up and running yet, but they promised to relay that info to me and I will update everyone here as details are released.
I am looking forward to seeing the movie, but also the updates and the progress.  It sounds like it's going to be a fun movie.  Mike has invited be to go on set and to get behind-the-scenes coverage.  I'll be there and I'll report here!
As promised earlier, I will keep everyone updated as Mike and Chris update me.  Check here for news on The Manson Brothers Midnight Zombie Massacre.  You can also follow MJCarey99 on twitter and Chris Margetis on Facebook.

JP Roth at Wizard World 2015

JP Roth's bio is what caught me as I planned my Wizard World interviews.  She describes herself as an "author, artist--wild child extraordinaire."  The "wild child-extraordinaire" is one thing that amused me.
She debuted n 2012 as a self-published author.  Since then, she has become a favorite on the convention scene.  She is known for sticking close to actual lore, while weaving in her stories.  Her mythology major certainly comes into play in her story-writing.
I love one quote of hers in particular.  When discussing her work, she states, “They’re not comics, they are Rothic Novels."  That's one way to separate yourself from the pack and I cannot argue with her statement.
Whether they are comics, "Rothic novels," graphic novels or anything else, they are definitely successful.  She is one busy person at the conventions.
Head over to Rothic.com for more info on this talented artist and "wild child extraordinaire!"  You can also follow Rothic Novels on Facebook and JP Roth on twitter.

On the Beat With White Sox Dave of Barstool Sports

I have written several times about my one at bat against Kirsten Verdun and the Chicago Bandits.  I struck out on four pitches (I worked that count!) and never really had a chance at making good contact.
I never felt too bad about it.  Kirsten was an elite pitcher (all of these ladies are elite players).  The pitches come in at about 65 mph from 40 feet, which translates to about 100 from regular distance.  Even in my prime, I don't think I would have done much better.
I had never seen any "regular" guy bat against the Bandits since then, until Saturday night, when WhiteSoxDave from Barstool Sports had his chance.
I was ecstatic and nervous about my at bat.  Dave was cool and cocky.  He talked smack on social media and at the ballpark.  He wanted softball legend Jennie Finch, but she politely declined.  Dave would face USSSA Pride pitcher Kelsey Nunley.
Nunley is a second year pitcher alum from the University of Kentucky.  She has a career NPF record of 14-2 with an ERA of 2.51.  She has 112 strike outs in 114.1 innings pitched.
Dave was younger than me and seemed fairly athletic, but I still thought he had no chance of making real contact.  Nunley is a pro.  While this was just an exhibition at bat, I didn't think she'd want to give up any big hit to a regular guy.
Dave gave it his all in the at bat.  He took some mighty swings.  In the end, he had the same result I did.  I felt better about my feeble attempt.
Dave took it all in good spirits.  He even started early trash-talking for his revenge next season, as you can hear in the interview below.
Dave did bounce back a bit later when he raced against Sammy Marshall.  In the first race, with a huge headstart, Dave "beat" Sammy.  In the next race, with a bit of a headstart, the race was too close to call, but I think Sammy edged him out.
Dave (aka WhiteSoxDave) is a Chicago contributor for Barstoolsports.com.  It's a fun, sports site, one which I visit on a regular basis.  I encourage all to check it out.  You can also follow BarstoolSports on twitter, BarstoolWSD on twitter, BarstoolCarl on twitter and Barstool Sports on Facebook.
I had a lot of fun hanging out in the bullpen area with the Barstool Sports gang.  I look forward to seeing them again next season at the ballpark in Rosemont.
I thank the Chicago Bandits for their continued hospitality.  I thank Barstool Sports and WhiteSoxDave for the interview.  I also extend an open offer to do any extra coverage of the Bandits for them.  Johngy's Beat would love to be (even a small) part of the Barstool Sports universe.

On the Beat With Coach Sharonda McDonald of the Chicago Bandits 2017

As we await the National Pro Fastpitch playoffs, our coverage of the Chicago Bandits continues.  After a season of interviewing the Bandits, we finally get to Coach Sharonda McDonald.
Sharonda had an excellent playing career at Texas A&M.  She finished with a .338 career batting average and is the Texas A&M all-time leader for both runs scored and stolen bases, while earning All-Big 12 honors all four years.  In 2005, her sophomore season, she won the Golden Shoe award, presented annually to the nation's top baserunner.
She went on to play two seasons with the Philadelphia Force in the NPF, followed by a season in the Italian Professional League, before returning to the NPF for 3 seasons with the Akron Racers and one season with the USSSA Pride.
Her coaching career started as an Assistant at Texas Southern University.  After stops at Ohio University, LSU and Texas Tech, she joined the University of Florida staff in 2016.  In early 2017, Sharonda was named Coach of the Bandits.
She came in under less than ideal circumstances.  A lot of changes occurred during the offseason and the back-to-back reigning champs barely resembled the team from last season.  While it has been a challenging season, the Bandits have hung tough.
The Bandits finished the season with a record of 25-24, good for 4th place and a spot in the playoffs.  They will now face the USSSA Pride with the first game on Thursday, August 17.
After Sunday's loss, I had the opportunity to talk to Coach Sharonda on the field.  I asked her about the rough series with the Pride, her first season coaching in the NPF and Bandit Nation.  Coach Sharonda was upbeat and ready for the playoffs.
I thank the Bandits for allowing me to get access to do all of these interviews.  I appreciate Coach Sharonda for giving us her time and thoughts.  I thank everyone who helped me with the interviews.  Finally, thank you to Bandit Nation and all others who watched (and hopefully enjoyed) these videos.
Check ChicagoBandits.com for information on how to watch the playoffs and for other news.  Check here for continuing coverage of the Bandits.  Our interviews are done for now, but our coverage will continue.

On the Beat With Stacy May-Johnson of the Chicago Bandits 2017

The 2017 National Pro Fastpitch regular season ended on Sunday for the Chicago Bandits and now they head to the playoffs.  Our coverage of the back-to-back reigning champs continues today with our interview with Stacy May-Johnson.
Stacy has one of the most interesting stories.  After a stellar career at Iowa, the Bandits selected Stacy in the second round of the 2006 NPF draft.  She was the 2006 NPF Rookie of the Year.  She followed that by being named the 2008 NPF Player of the Year, while leading the team to their first title.  She won her second Player of the Year award in 2011, while the Bandits won their second title.
Stacy retired after the 2011 season, with her place secured as one of the NPF all-time greats.  The Bandits retired her #5 jersey and Bandit Nation adjusted to life after Stacy.
Earlier this year, Stacy announced she was coming out of retirement and signed with the Bandits.  I was excited, as I hadn't seen Stacy in her earlier years.  I was finally going to see the legend in action.
This season, Stacy hit .211 in 76 at bats in 35 games.  She also had 9 RBI's and 6 runs scored.
I'd call it a successful comeback.  Her contributions go well beyond her stats though.  The fans embraced her again.  As a returning veteran, she immediately became a team leader.  She looked to be having fun.  It was a real feel-good story.
I had the pleasure of finally interviewing Stacy.  I asked her about her decision to return and her thoughts on the season.  Stacy talked about the possibility of next season and the Olympics.  I also asked her about her children seeing mommy and her role as a team leader.
It was really great talking to Stacy.  She is a true professional and a class act.  The team, the NPF and the sport of softball are better because of her.
Thank you to the Chicago Bandits for giving me the access to do these interviews.  Thank you to Stacy for her time and consideration.  Thanks to Bandit Nation's Mark Pandocchi for last-minute duty in helping me with this interview.

Friendly Encounters: Greg Luzinski and Glen Rylko

Friendly Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

For once, not only did I meet a celebrity who Glen Rylko met, I beat him to that celebrity.  I don't think Glen is keeping score though.  He's probably not as petty as I am.
Glen is a good dude, who I met at a wrestling show and who I have seen at many shows and conventions.  He also gets to meet many celebrities, often times ones I have not met.  Despite meeting hundreds of celebrities, it's always the ones I haven't met that sting when I see others with them, especially when they are favorites of mine.
Glen met Greg "The Bull" Luzinski and that would be one that would make me envious, had I not met Luzinski several years ago in Philadelphia.  Luzinski is a legend in Chicago.  He is a local kid, who starred for the Phillies and won a division title with the White Sox in 1983.  On my trip to see the Phillies, meeting Luzinski was definitely one of the goals and highlights.  Now, I can look at the picture of Glen and "The Bull" and not feel anything but happiness for Glen (and for Luzinski, too, since he got to meet Glen).
Friendly Encounters almost always have happy stories for those involved.  This one makes everyone happy, even me.

On the Beat With Danielle Zymkowitz of the Chicago Bandits 2017

We remain "On the Beat" as the regular season winds down for the back-to-back National Pro Fastpitch champion Chicago Bandits.  Today, our coverage features Danielle Zymkowitz.
Danielle had an outstanding career at the University of Illinois.  The three year captain is the Illinois career leader for batting average (.384), hits (277), runs scored (202), stolen base attempts (106), stolen bases (91) and stolen base percentage (.858).  In her senior year, she hit .429, while starting all 49 games at second base.  She was also a three-time first-team All-Big Ten selection while with the Illini.
She went undrafted, but earned a spot on the Bandits via a tryout.  She has been a great player ever since.  She has played at least 30 games every season, while batting .265 over her career.
In her 7th season, she is playing as good as ever.  She is hitting .254 with 7 rbi's and 14 runs scored.  Defensively, she has made only one error in 29 chances.
In our interview below, I asked Danielle about going from a tryout to playing (at a high level) for 7 seasons, her role as a team leader, her superpower wishes and more.  I also asked a couple questions submitted by Kenzie Parker, a young softball player and huge fan of the Bandits.
Danielle was one of the first Bandits I ever interviewed.  She is one of 2 Bandits (Natalie Hernandez is the other) remaining from my first season covering the team.  She is a true pro and I have a ton of respect for her on and off the field.  It really has been a pleasure watching her play (and practice) and talking to her around the park.  Danielle is a great role model and a great ambassador for the league and the sport.
Thank you to the Chicago Bandits for allowing me to do what I love.  Thanks to Danielle for giving us her time and for years of great play.  Thanks to Kenzie Parker for her contributions to the interview.  Thank you to Mark Pandocchi (of Bandit Nation) for his solid video work and assistance on these last couple interviews.
Today is the last regular season game, but the playoffs are ahead.  Check ChicagoBandits.com for more info and news.  Keep checking here for our continual coverage of the reigning NPF champs!

Celebrity Jersey Cards #335 Bing Crosby & Janet Leigh

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a weekly series in which I create virtual trading cards for jersey-clad celebrities.  Today, we continue to work our way alphabetically through Major League Baseball.

The late singer-actor Bing Crosby was born in Tacoma, WA.  He is one of the first multi-media stars.  He won an Academy Award for Best Actor and he was the best-selling recording artist of the 20th century.  Along with all of that, he once was part-owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates.  That explains his Celebrity Jersey Card.
Actress Janet Leigh was born in Merced, CA and rose to fame on the stage and screen.  She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.  Once married to Tony Curtis, she is the mother of Jamie Lee Curtis.  Her role in Angels in the Outfield explains the Pirates uniform and lands her on a Celebrity Jersey Card.

On the Beat With Alexa Peterson of the Chicago Bandits 2017

The Chicago Bandits have clinched a playoff spot and we continue our coverage as they end their regular season and charge into the playoffs.  Today, our coverage brings us to 4th year outfielder Alexa Peterson.
Alexa had an outstanding career at the University of Oregon, where she had a .360 career batting average with 30 home runs and 153 RBI's.  As a junior, she hit .471 to win the Pac 12 batting title.  She ended her career at Oregon ranking in the top ten in hits, doubles, homers, walks, rbi's and batting average.  The USSSA Pride selected her with the 11th pick in the 2014 NPF draft.
In her rookie season, she appeared in 18 games, hitting .389 with a home run, 3 rbi's and 5 runs scored.  After the season, she was traded to the (now defunct) Pennsylvania Rebellion. She saw considerable playing time with the Rebellion and hit .248 and .256 in her two seasons there.  She also hit 4 homers and had 27 rbi's and 27 runs scored over the 2 seasons.
After the Rebellion folded, Alexa signed with the Bandits.  This season, in 25 games, she is hitting .286, with 2 homers, 6 rbi's and 9 runs scored.  She also has a stolen base and has been hit by a pitch 4 times.
As always, I appreciate the Bandits for allowing me to do what I love.  Thanks, too, to Alexa for giving us her time and consideration.
Three games and the playoffs remain in the 2017 NPF season.  Keep returning here, because we still have a few interviews to run.  Also, check ChicagoBandits.com for more news and info.

On the Beat With Sierra Hyland of the Chicago Bandits 2017

We are focusing all of our energy on the Chicago Bandits as they finish the regular season and hopefully head into the NPF playoffs.  Today our coverage features pitcher Sierra Hyland.
Sierra starred at Cal Poly, earning NFCA All-Region honors every season.  She was the first player in school history to achieve that accomplishment.  She did this while excelling on and off the mound.  When not pitching, she saw considerable time at DP and at 3rd base.  As a senior, she went 23-12 with an ERA of .97 and hit .331 with 2 home runs and 36 RBI's.  The Bandits noticed and made her the 4th selection in the 2017 NPF draft.
As of this writing, Sierra is 1-1 with an ERA of 4.06, in 4 appearance, including 1 start.  She has 5 strikeouts in 10.1 innings.
In our interview, we talked to Sierra about her dual roles in college, pitching a perfect game, her highlight in the NPF and more.  Especially following Monica Abbott's no-hitter, it was interesting to hear Sierra's thoughts from a pitcher's perspective.
Thanks as always to the Bandits for allowing me access to do what I love.  Thanks to Sierra for giving her time and consideration.
The Bandits are closing out their regular season with the USSSA Pride this weekend.  Go to ChicagoBandits.com for more news and scheduling info.  Also, keep checking here, as we have continuing coverage and a few more interviews to run.

On the Beat With Samantha Poole of the Chicago Bandits 2017

The National Pro Fastpitch season is winding down, but there is still softball left to be enjoyed and our coverage of the back-to-back champion Chicago Bandits continues.  Today, we feature Samantha Poole, another of the "Aussie Eight" playing for the Bandits!
Samantha started playing softball at the age of 13.  Despite the somewhat late start, she has compiled quite an impressive softball resume.  Among her many softball accomplishments, she has played with the Aussie Spirit team in the 2016 Japan Cup and played for the 2017 Gilley's Shield winning New South Wales Firestars,
She signed with the Bandits in the last NPF offseason.  Like many first year NPF players, gaining playing time in a crowded lineup has been tough, but Samantha remains ready and positive.  As of this writing, Samantha has appeared in 4 games, getting one hit in 5 at bats and 1 run scored.
In our interview, we talked about the differences between playing in Australia and in the NPF, her start in softball and other fun stuff.  She also talked about her career in Physiotherapy, proving once again that these women are not only making contributions on the field, they are making a difference off the field.  They truly are elite.
Thank you to the Chicago Bandits for allowing me to do what I love.  Thank you to the Australia community for their tremendous support.  It has been wonderful getting to know you and hearing from you all.  Finally, thanks to Samantha for her time and consideration.
There are only a few games left in the 2017 season.  It's really crunch time for the team and the fans.  Head out to a game now.  Check here for recurring coverage and also ChicagoBandits.com for news and schedule info.

On the Beat With Sahvanna Jaquish of the Chicago Bandits 2017

As the National Pro Fastpitch season winds down, the Bandits are in the thick of the race for the playoffs.  Currently, the Bandits are in 3rd place, with the Akron Racers and the Texas Charge trying to catch them.
There are still 5 games to play, plus the playoffs.  We still have several interviews to run, as well.  Today's interview features catcher Sahvanna Jaquish.
Sahvanna starred at Louisiana State University, being named an NFCA All-American in all 4 seasons.  She drove in more than 50 runs every season, which landed her in 1st place in LSU history.  As a junior, she started 69 of 70 games, including 30 starts at catcher, 17 at 1st, 16 at 3rd and 6 as DP.  Her durability was matched by her versatility.  As a senior, she drove in 53 runs and had an incredible .548 on base percentage.  Her career culminated in being selected 3rd overall by the Bandits in the 2017 draft.
In her rookie season, as of this writing, she is hitting .330 with 3 homers, 27 rbi's and 12 runs scored.  Additionally, she has thrown out 35% of attempted base-stealers.
In our interview, Sahvanna talked about her versatility, her love of crawfish.  Because she was a broadcast journalism major at LSU, we turned the tables and asked Sahvanna what questions she would ask herself and then we asked her those questions.  Sahvanna was a great sport, going along with that bit.
As always, we thank the Bandits for their hospitality.  We also thank Sahvanna for her time and consideration.
We encourage everyone to support the Bandits as they enter this final week of the regular season.  Head to ChicagoBandits.com for more news, info and scheduling.

Friendly Encounters: Rick Nielsen and Carl Klimowicz

This is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

Carl Klimowicz was friends with my brother-in-law Scott before I knew either of them.  I met Carl completely independently at DePaul.  It was only later when we realized the connection.
Carl and I had some fun times during our years at DePaul.  Who could ever forget the debacle known as Speech Class?  Who can remember our last day celebration at My Pi pizza?  That day started at about noon and ended somewhere around noon (the next day).
I had the pleasure of standing up in Carl's wedding.  That was about 30 years ago.  Where does time go?
Speaking of time, the picture below stuns me.  How does Carl possibly have a daughter as old as Jen?  It seems just yesterday we were playing eraser basketball in an empty classroom.
Usually, I'd be upset that I did not meet a legend like Rick Nielsen, but I am too spun by time passing so quickly to even think about missing out on the Hall of Famer.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #334 Lou Ferrigno & Bernie Parent

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a regular series in which I create virtual trading cards for jersey-clad celebrities.  Today, we continue working our way alphabetically through Major League Baseball.

Body builder Lou Ferrigno was born in Brooklyn, NY.  He rose to fame in fitness competitions, then turned to acting.  Famous for Hercules and The Incredible Hulk, Ferrigno also had a comedic role on tv's King of Queens.  I wish Ferrigno would have worn the older powder blue Phillies jersey for his Celebrity Jersey Card.
Born in Montreal, Canada, Bernie Parent rose to stardom as a goalie for the Philadelphia Flyers.  He also had stints with the Boston Bruins, the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Philadelphia Blazers of the WHA on his way to a Hall of Fame career.  It is only fitting that Parent is wearing a Phillies jersey on his Celebrity Jersey Card.

On the Beat With Kaia Parnaby of the Chicago Bandits 2017

We continue to have a blast covering the back-to-back National Pro Fastpitch champion Chicago Bandits.  Today, we feature pitcher Kaia Parnaby, another of the "Aussie Eight" playing with the Bandits.
Kaia starred at the University of Hawaii, going an impressive 55-10 over her junior and senior seasons.  She also has played for the New South Wales U16 team and the senior Australia women's national softball team, among other elite squads.
Kaia signed with the Bandits during the last NPF offseason.  Although she made her debut fairly recently, she has already made an impact.  She has started 3 games, completing 2, while gaining 2 victories against 1 loss.  She has racked up 15 strike outs and only 4 walks, while having an outstanding ERA of 1.91.
In our interview, Kaia talked about the differences between Australia softball and the NPF, her highlight so far in the NPF, her career at the University of Hawaii and more.
As always, I greatly appreciate the hospitality of the Bandits in allowing me the access to this great team and sport.  I also appreciate the fantastic support from the Australian community.  Our new friends there have been wonderful.  Finally, thank you to Kaia for her time and consideration.
The NPF season is coming to an end and the Bandits are still fighting for a playoff spot.  Keep coming here for recurring coverage.  Most of all, come out out a game and head to ChicagoBandits.com for more info and schedules.

On the Beat With Rachel Lack of the Chicago Bandits 2017

Our coverage of the back-to-back National Pro Fastpitch champion Chicago Bandits brings us to Rachel Lack.  Rachel is another of the "Aussie Eight" playing for the Bandits.
Rachel played in 93 games over two seasons for the University of Hawaii.  She led the team with 6 homers in her second season, while also driving in 23 runs.  She also batted an incredible .750 with the bases loaded.
In addition to playing for Hawaii, Rachel has accomplished quite a lot in softball on the international level.  She represented Australia at the Under 19 level in Canada in 2013 and played on the Aussie Spirit team that won a bronze medal at the 2014 World Series, where she hit a grand slam (again, coming up clutch with the bases loaded).  She also played in the Japan Cup.
Rachel signed with the Bandits during the last NPF offseason.  Like a lot of the first year players, Rachel has had limited playing time.
We talked to Rachel about the differences between softball in Australia and the NPF, her versatility and other fun softball stuff.  She also talked about her work with the Zambi Wildlife Retreat.  Rachel is another example of the elite athletes in the NPF making a difference in the world on and off the field.
We really appreciate the continued hospitality of the Bandits in allowing us the access to do what we love.  We also appreciate the tremendous support we have received from the Australian community.  Finally, thanks to Rachel for her time and consideration.
There are still several games left and the Bandits are fighting for a playoff spot.  Head to ChicagoBandits.com for scheduling info and other news.  Keep coming to Johngy's Beat for our continuing coverage of the Bandits!

On the Beat With Stacey McManus of the Chicago Bandits 2017

I was back "On the Beat" with the Chicago Bandits for another round of interviews.  Over the next few days, I will be running interviews with four of the "Aussie Eight" starting today with Stacey McManus.
A child of two softball-playing parents, Stacey started playing when she was four and has built an impressive softball resume.  She is a member of the Australia women's national softball team,  She played in the Canadian Open Fastpitch International Series and the World Cup of Softball.
Stacey signed with the Bandits in March 2017.  In limited playing time, Stacey has 10 at bats, 1 home run, 4 rbi's and 3 runs scored.  She has definitely made the most of her opportunities.
In the interview below, I asked Stacey about her favorite baseball team, her childhood softball nickname, a certain softball memory and other fun stuff.  I admit, I had a little help with these questions from someone very close to Stacey.
I really appreciate Cindy (Stacey's mom) for sharing a couple good stories.  I never would have gotten those bits of info without her help.  It certainly added to the interview!  I also thank Cindy for the cute koala bear she gifted me upon meeting her at the ballpark!  That was very kind and much appreciated.
Thank you to the Bandits for their continued hospitality.  Thanks to Stacey for her time and consideration.
Stay tuned to Johngy's Beat for continuing coverage of the back-to-back NPF champion Chicago Bandits.  Also, check out ChicagoBandits.com for more info, including scheduling!

Betsy Russell at Flashback Weekend 2013

We will once again be "On the Beat" at Flashback Weekend, which runs from August 5-7 at the Crowne Plaza in Rosemont.  My pre-event story is on the Patch at Flashback Weekend Is Coming!
This year, Robert Englund heads a celebrity lineup that is packed with greatness.  You can get the full lineup and all of the scheduled events at FlashbackWeekend.com.  I never miss this fun convention!
One of my favorite guests from the past is actress Betsy Russell, probably best known for her role in the Saw movie series.  She first appeared in Saw III and has been in five Saw movies in total.  She has done other movies, as well as some episodic television.
Not quite as active in the entertainment world of late, she has kept busy with other endeavors.  She is a certified hypnotist and a certified life coach.
We talked to her about her new path and she was very passionate about it.  It was interesting to see a successful entertainer so excited about a non-traditional career progression.
She teaches life coaching classes and also does private instruction.  You can get all of the information about her and her newer career path at ImBetsyRussell.com.  I have not taken any of the classes, but I would if they were held in this area.  It would be fascinating to see what she could do and how her passion translates into action.
Russell was a great guest and a lot of fun.  I'm looking forward to the guests and more fun this year!  I hope to see many of my horror con pals there, too!

On the Beat With the Chicago Sky: 7/30/17

Last Sunday, I was back "On the Beat" with the Chicago Sky.  The Sky lost a tough battle 86-82 to the New York Liberty.  My recap of the game can be found on the Patch at On the Beat With the Chicago Sky 7/30/17.
The Sky are now 8-16 and tied for 10th place (out of 12 teams) with the Indiana Fever.  With 8 teams making the playoffs, it seems a longshot for the Sky.  On the other hand, the 8th spot is currently held by the Atlanta Dream with a record of 10-14.  Suddenly, it doesn't look impossible.
Sunday's game was very interesting.  The Sky outscored the Liberty in the 1st, 3rd and 4th quarters.  As a matter of fact, they outscored the Liberty for all but the 10-0 run for the Liberty at the start of the 2nd quarter.  As frustrating as that sounds, it is also a source of hope.  The Liberty are now 12-10 in 6th place and the Sky hung with them (except for that one spurt).
I continue to be impressed with this team.  Coach Amber Stocks is poised, calm and confident.  She praises her team when it's deserved, but she also accepts the criticism when it is justified.  She faces the media with her head held high, supporting her team as she explains what went wrong and what worked.
The players follow the lead from Coach Stock.  In Sunday's case, Jessica Breland and Allie Quigley faced the media.  While it is not a harsh group of reporters, it still can't be pleasant after such a tough battle.
I am also impressed with the fan base the Sky have.  The Allstate Arena is filled with young, loud fans, who know the team.  These aren't just casual fans.  These are the future ticket-buyers.
I am also excited about the future for another reason.  The team just announced they will move to the new Wintrust Arena near McCormick Place for next season.  The state-of-the-art arena will hold 10,000 and should be a major draw in the south loop.
As you can tell, I have been enjoying my experience with the Sky.  There are still 10 games left and I will be watching them either on television or at the arena.
You can check Sky.WNBA.com for more info, including their schedule.  I also want to give a huge thank you to the Sky for their hospitality.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #333 Rey Mysterio & Ken Shamrock

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a regular series in which I create virtual trading cards for jersey-clad celebrities.  Today, we continue to work our way alphabetically through Major League Baseball.

Born in Chula Vista, CA, Óscar Gutiérrez made a name for himself in wrestling as Rey Mysterio.  The high-flyer called his finishing move "the 619," in reference to the area code for San Diego.Mysterio has delighted fans and won titles all over the world.  He wore his usual luchador mask for his Celebrity Jersey card.
Fellow wrestler Ken Shamrock was born in Warner Robins, GA.  He started out as a mixed martial artist before transitioning into pro wrestling.  Either way, he was "the world's most dangerous man."  I won't criticize the man, but are those casual slacks he is wearing with a jersey?  Either way, it makes for an intimidating Celebrity Jersey Card!
