Friend Encounters: Lou Ferrigno and Jack

Friend Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends meeting celebrities.

FanExpo returns to Chicago (Rosemont) this weekend. Since taking over Wizard World, FanExpo has not missed a beat.

Back in the day though, Wizard World was a lot of fun. They usually held a special press reception prior to the weekend of fun. One of those events featured Lou Ferrigno. My interview with him there is at On the Beat with Lou Ferrigno. Among other topics, I asked him about his role on King of Queens. The next day at Wizard World, we thanked him again for the interview. He was kind enough to take a picture with my photo friend Jack and me again.

I must also stress how nice Ferrigno has always been to me over many conventions. Ferrigno sometimes gets criticized for not-so-pleasant interactions, but I have never experienced anything less than great ones, even when I wasn't part of the press. Maybe I am just lucky or maybe others are unlucky.

It just goes to prove you never know. Regardless of reputation, if you want to meet the celeb, I highly encourage you to do so. I have met hundreds of celebs and athletes and have had very few bad encounters, despite hearing many stories of problems others have had.

Check fanexpohq.com for more info on their events. Check here for my recurring coverage.

Friend Encounters: Adrienne Barbeau and Jack

Friend Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends meeting celebrities.

I am not the only one who recognized the talents and work my pal Jack has contributed to Johngy's Beat. At Wizard World several years ago, actress Adrienne Barbeau gave him props.

Jack has been my photog on and off for many years. During our interaction with Barbeau, I took a picture as I always do. Then Barbeau surprised us by asking if my camera man wanted a picture, too. Actually, it was more of a suggestion than a question. Who are we to deny Barbeau.

Barbeau might be best-known for her role as the daughter on television's Maude. Of course, she also has a lengthy resume of other work. Perhaps a bit of a surprise, Barbeau has a great singing voice. I was very impressed when I found some songs she performed.

Our Barbeau encounter is just one of the many fun moments we've had at Wizard World and many other conventions. Every celeb isn't as engaging as Barbeau, but many have given special moments to me over the years.

Wizard World was bought by Fan Expo. Now it is basically the same show with a different name. For more info on the great convention, go to fanexpohq.com.

Friend Encounters: Jennie Finch and Jack

Friend Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends meeting celebrities.

I haven't featured my pal Jack in a long time. With Athletes Unlimited announcing several games would be played in Rosemont this season, it was the perfect time to feature Jack with Jenni Finch.

Finch is softball royalty. Finch is definitely one of the greatest softball players. She played several years with the Chicago Bandits, forever cementing herself in our hearts. She also returned several times for special signings at the ballpark.

In 2015, when I was covering the Bandits, Finch returned for a clinic and appearance at the ballpark. The Media Rep Jason called me to ask if I would like an interview with Finch. Did he really have to ask? I couldn't get there fast enough. That interview is at On the Beat with Jennie Finch.

Jennie could not have been nicer. Time was tight, but I had a few minutes and was grateful for it.

Fortunately, my pal Jack was available to join me and handle the recorder. After the interview I asked for pictures for Jack and me. Again, Finch could not have been sweeter.

While Jack isn't a huge softball fan, but he helped me for a few seasons with the Bandits. He didn't take any other pictures with players, but he got one of the best.

Friend Encounters: Joey Lauren Adams and Jack Keenan at Days of the Dead

Friend Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities. With Days of the Dead returning to Chicago November 22-24, today is a special Friend Encounters: Days of the Dead edition.
Jack Keenan has been immensely helpful at conventions over the years as a photographer/videographer. He rarely gets pictures with the celebrities, but when there is one he wants, I do my best to make sure it happens.
At last year's Days of the Dead Chicago, as we were finishing our work on the last day, Jack spotted Joey Lauren Adams and mentioned he was a fan. Of course, we stopped at her table and chatted a bit and got the picture.
Since making her film debut in 1977's Exorcist II: The Heretic, Adams has carved out a nice acting career. Some of her more popular films are Chasing Amy, Dazed and Confused and Mallrats.
Adams was very nice and we talked for several minutes. She took extra care to make the picture a good one and checked it after we took it. That little bit of attention means a lot when meeting celebrities. It shows she cares and wants the encounter to be special.
I really appreciate Jack's assistance. He is quite busy with real estate, but he is always willing to help when I need it. Of course, I will always appreciate Jack's work in selling my house and buying my condo. Check out Jack at Exit Strategy Real Estate for all of your real estate needs.
Check DaysoftheDead.com for all the info. Also check the Days of the Dead Facebook page for more frequent updates.

Friendly Encounters: Kato Kaelin and Jack Keenan

Friendly Encounters is a weekly series featuring my friends who have met celebrities.

Keenan and Kaelin sounds like it could be a wacky television sitcom.  The picture below would be the perfect ad for it, too.  Actually, both of them are characters in life.  This could be a real sitcom, just following their adventures together and apart.
When we were entering Wizard World Chicago last year, Jack spotted Kaelin near the entrance.  The con hadn't even officially started and Kaelin was there entertaining the masses in his role as "Convention Host."  That began a weekend of our paths crossing and intertwining.
I have previously written several times about how great Kaelin was at Wizard World.  The Convention Host can be a symbolic title, but Kaelin dove into the role and was a major hit every day.  I honestly do not remember seeing him not working.  He was amazing.
Equally amazing in his own right was Jack, who often helps me as a photographer.  He earned the nickname "Sniper" from Luke Perry and he truly lives up to that monicker.  Jack rarely misses a picture and often times gets me shots I would have missed completely, like with Kaelin.
It was a lot of fun working with these two and I hope to do it again this summer.  I know Jack is in.  Now, we just have to get Kaelin back on board!

Friendly Encounters: Loni Anderson and Jack Keenan

Friendly Encounters is a weekly series featuring my friends who have met celebrities.

Today, I feature my Ace Photographer Jack Keenan with actress Loni Anderson at Wizard World Chicago last year.
Loni looked absolutely fantastic, especially for being 71.  Jack looked ok, too, but he's nowhere near 71.
Better yet, Loni was very gracious and fan friendly.  We talked about her time on television's WKRP in Cincinnati, as well as other roles she has had, such as her first role, acting in Nevada Smith with Steve McQueen.
Loni has been a spokesperson for COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease).  She has also worked to raise money and awareness for Multiple Sclerosis, which her daughter battles.
As usual, Jack did awesome camera work at Wizard World.  For a rare instance, he also went on the other side of the lens for this picture with Loni.  Smart move, Jack!

Gene Simmons at Wizard World St. Louis 2017

A couple weeks ago, I was part of the media attending Wizard World in St. Louis.  The celebrity headliner was Gene Simmons.  We were involved in several different events involving Simmons and each was a great experience.  My recap of the weekend is on Patch.com at On the Beat at Wizard World St. Louis 2017 and also on Global Traveler at Weekend in St. Louis.
Our first interaction with Simmons occurred at his panel.  He started it off by walking off the stage to take his place right in front of the audience.  He stated that he wanted to be among the people.  It was a classy move, which was greeted with thunderous applause.  The session was interesting as Simmons discussed his career and current projects and the he took questions.
That was immediately followed by the photo session.  With several hundred people in line to get a picture with Simmons, you know the moment will be quick, but Simmons still made it special.  He greeted us and thanked us.  He also made small talk about the weather.  For an instance like this, it was about as good as it gets.  Once again, Simmons was great.
Later in the day, we went to the Pageant to see Simmons and his band perform.  The Pageant is a cool, intimate venue, seating about 2,000.  The low ticket price had me thinking Simmons might perform a few songs.  I was way wrong.
Simmons rocked the stage for about two hours, mixing in Kiss stuff with his solo music.  He ended with a few songs as a tribute to Chuck Berry.  Simmons also talked a bit from the stage, just enough to keep it fun, but not too much to detract from the show.
Simmons is 67 years old and he still has that charisma and stage presence.  The man is a music legend and he still grabs the audience.  It was an amazing weekend with Simmons and I didn't hear one bad story from any of the attendees.
I give a lot of credit to Simmons.  While one might think this is standard behavior, some celebrities at comic cons are not as personable as Simmons.  When a star (especially of his stature) goes above and beyond, I must applaud it and make it known.
Thank you to Simmons for a fantastic experience.  Kiss was my first favorite rock band.  I have now met three of the original four Kiss members (I'm missing Paul Stanley).  Seeing him brought me right back to that teenager listening to Rock and Roll Over.  Interacting with him was well beyond the imagination of my younger self and I still can't believe it happened.
Thank you also to the staff at Wizard World for their hospitality.  It is a pleasure working with this fine organization.  Check out WizardWorld.com for future conventions.

Blissful Times

Sorry for the cheesy pun of a title for this.  I can't help myself sometimes and even if I could, I probably wouldn't.
The Chicago Bliss of the Legends Football League won their third LFL title in the last 4 years.  I covered the team through the first 2 titles, including accompanying them to Los Angeles for the title game.
It was a lot of fun and I thought it was a unique sport I could cover.  The team was always good to me, granting me lots of extra axcess.  I enjoyed talking to Coach Keith Hac, his assistants and the players (and not just because they were attractive young women).
The LFL itself, though, is a bit of a strange beast, confusing me to this day.  The Powers That Be (TPTB) decided to take all the media coverage and bring it in house.  Suddenly I was not part of the credentialed media.
Why a relatively unknown leage (sport) wouldn't want as much coverage as possible is  beyond me.  How many of my readers heard of the Bliss before I started covering them?  If you did know of them, how many people really knew anything substantial about them?  Yet TPTB decided they didn't need my extra coverage.
For full disclosure, I know of only one other "media" outlet covering them back then and they treated the Bliss mostly as a joke.  Regardless, they were also ousted from the coverage.
I still occasionally write about the Bliss.  I have no hard feelings towards the Bliss.  I don't want to come off like a bitter person, because I'm really not.  I have plenty of other stuff to cover, if I am not wanted somewhere.
In the end, it was a great ride while it lasted.  I had a lot of fun.  Jack and I went to Milwaukee and Los Angeles because of the Bliss.  I met a lot of great people, like Photographer Norm Cook.  I thought this would be a long run of expanding coverage.
I think TPTB have a different agenda though and I have no idea what it is.  Maybe they want to keep it as their little secret.  It's a shame, because the product is good.  The women are tough and skillled athletes.  In addition, they are very fan-friendly.
Next season, I'll probably check out a game (they only play two home games) and reconnect with some of my old friends.  It's hard to be "just a fan" after being so close.  It might be even harder to be sort of an insider/outsider like I am.  We'll see.  Until then though, I look back on the experience and remember the good times.

Friendly Encounters: Michael Gross and Jack Keenan

This is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

Most people fondly recall actor Michael Gross for his role as Michael Keaton on tv's Family Ties.  Of course my bud Jack knows of that role, but his favorite Gross role was as William Matix in the true life movie In the Line of Duty: The F.B.I. Murders.  Jack and I talked to Gross about both roles and more when we saw him at the recent REWind Con.
Gross is a talented actor, but in real life, he is much closer to Keaton than to Matix.  He did enjoy the acting stretch of playing Matix though.  This really tells of the talent that Gross has.
Gross has done a lot of other projects besides these two, including a stint on The Young & Restless.  He's done spots on episodic television, voice work, movies and more.  Another big role was as Burt Gummer in the Tremors franchise.
He talked to us about Tremors 6, which he stated is in development already.  That is exciting news.  Gross was so popular in that role, that the focus of the movie has shifted to him from the group of characters in the original.
Gross is a class act and one of the true nice guys.  We also talked a bit about his sister Mary, who is doing well, although not acting as uch right now.
Here's one last footnote.  Gross and his Family Ties wife Meredith Baxter have the same exact birthday!
Thank you to Gross for his time and thanks to REWind Con for setting the stage for this.  In the next several days, I'll be recapping several other celebrity encounters from REWnd Con.

Friendly Encounters: Ace Frehley and Jack Keenan

Friendly Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

My friend Jack Keenan works hard for Johngy's Beat.  As our ace photog, he is always at the ready to snap the perfect picture.  Every once in a while, he can even be persuaded to get in a picture.  Such was the case last year at Days of the Dead.
While we were covering Days, we hit the Ace Frehley photo-op area.  Ace waved us over and we got the pics.  Jack didn't even have time to put down his camera.  The photographer got photographed.
Ace was very cool and talked a bit to Jack about taking pictures.  I'm always happy to see Jack get something like this.  It is an added bonus that you really can't buy.
This is still another example of the cool stuff at Days of the Dead conventions.  For more info on the next Days event (and all the info on Days), check out DaysoftheDead.net.

Friendly Encounters: PJ Soles and Jack Keenan

Friendly Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

Jack Keenan has been a great addition to the Johngy's Beat family.  He started out as emergency relief, but I slowly have drawn him into a much more regular role.  He has been my regular guy for the Chicago Bliss, the Chicago Bandits and Days of the Dead in Chicago.
At the last Days event, he was all over the place setting up stuff and getting things in order.  He was a big hit with the celebs we encountered, including (or especially) P.J. Soles.
P.J. and Jack had a great rapport going.  They were like old friends.  I am almost surprised I actually squeezed in my real work with these two.
Seriously though, help like this is always most welcome.  Getting the celebs at ease is a great start.  P.J. knew us already from previous encounters, but with all of the other demands on her time, every positive thing in our arsenal is a good thing.  Jack even got her to do a Johngy's Beat promo (which is in the left column of promos).
It's a rough job and Jack is an ace at it.  You can tell how much he suffers for the craft by the look on his face in the picture below.  As I wrote, it's a tough job.

Covering the "Pretty. Strong." Chicago Bliss

I have been covering the Chicago Bliss for the last three seasons and I have immensely enjoyed the experience.  There have been so many great times, like when my ace photog Jack Keenan and I traveled to Los Angeles to watch them win their second Legends Cup.
Among other benefits is that the Bliss have given me a lot of material and the stories I write for Tru School Sports are among the most viewed on TSS.  Lately, I have been recapping and reviewing Pretty.  Strong., their docu-series on the Oxygen Network.
All of those stories can be found via the links below.
I can't honestly say that I love the show, but I enjoy seeing the women on television getting more exposure.  I don't dislike the show either.  I am just finding it less than what I hoped it would be. As I write in most of my TSS pieces, the Bliss are a rich source of gold material.  Beautiful, athletic, intelligent, personable women playing football seems like a winning proposition.  It's what drew me to the team three years ago and has kept me hooked ever since.  I only wish the series showcased them in the light that I see them.
The show isn't failing.  It's just not delivering all that it could.  Maybe that is just my love for the team though.  Maybe I want the world to see the women that I have grown to respect and call friends.  I'v heard great reviews from others.  Maybe it is just me.  If I am guilty of that, it's because I care too much about the team and I want everyone else to see them how I see them.

Friendly Encounters: The Michael Schenker Group and Jack Keenan

This is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

When Jack Keenan ha a Friendly Encounter, he does it in a big way.  It's not often a Friendly Encounter features a group of celebrities.  Jack got a group alright, the Michael Schenker Group.
Schenker is one of the world's bests guitarists.  He got some fame in the Scorpions, then joined UFO.  Since leaving UFO for the first time, Schenker has played with various incarnations of the Michael Schenker Group.  He has also occasionally rejoined UFO.
Jack saw Schenker and his band at a show in Chicago earlier this year.  A backstage pass put him right in the thick of things.  Jack says this photo happened almost by accident.  Although he had been mingling with them all evening, at one point, they kind of found themselves assembled as such and an alert photog captured the moment.  No need to pose when this type of situation does it for you.
Actually, doesn;t this sort of look like an album cover.  Oh, maybe I will need to explain what an album cover is to the younger folks reading this.

Friendly Encounters: Alli Alberts and Jack Keenan

This is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

Jack Keenan has done a great job as my ace photographer and videographer for the Johngy's Beat coverage of the Chicago Bliss.  Alli Alberts has done a great job as safety-wide receiver on the 2x Legends Football League champions.
Alli got some exposure this season in the LFL, but she is still very underrated.  On a team like the Bliss, it is easy to get overshadowed by stars like Heather Furr and ChrisDell Harris, but Alli has earned her place next to them.
This isn't about the other not deserving the spotlight.  It is just about Alli deserving a bit of it.  Maybe the Bliss need a bigger spotlight.
I tried to give put a spotlight on them.  I tried for three seasons to give the team the credit, respect and coverage that they deserve.  It has been a blast all the way.  Not only did I get great access from the team, I got to watch these elite athletes up close and was privy to some inside strategy courtesy of the coaching staff.  I had a ton of fun and wouldn't trade the experience for anything.
Alli was always up for a good interview.  All of the women were.  I have nothing but praise for the ladies of the Bliss.  They are a great blend of beauty, brains, athleticism and humor.
The Bliss lost to the Seattle Mist in the LFL championship game a few weeks ago.  This ended their hopes of a threepeat, but it does not diminish all they have accomplished.  It also does not stop their dominance.  They will be back strong in 2016.

Friendly Encounters: Keith Hac and Jack Keenan

Friendly Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

I call this pic "Hac and Jack."  Aren't I clever?  I gave Hac first billing because of his coaching resume (no offense to Jack).
As has been well-documented, Jack Keenan has been with Johngy's Beat for the duration of our coverage of the Chicago Bliss.  Head Coach Keith Hac has been at the helm for that whole time, too.
Over the course of our connection, the Bliss has gone 14-1-1 and won 2 Legends Football League titles.  At 4-0 this season, they look to be a strong candidate to win the LFL title this season, too.
Hac has a brilliant football mind.  I believe he could be successful on any level.  He sees things that others miss.  For years, the Bliss ran a simple, but effective, offense.  People criticized them for being one-dimensional and boring.  I praised them for winning.  Hac just rolled with it.
Then at the last game, out of nowhere, Hac made the Bliss a passing machine.  This took everyone by surprise, even me, although I am not surprised that Hac would surprise people (does that make sense?).
Of course, the critics immediately questioned why he would not have saved the newly discovered air attack for the playoff game against the Atlanta Steam.  Why not take them by surprise then?
There are a few possibilities and all are classic Hac.  Maybe he wanted other coaches to have something else on their minds as they prepared.  Maybe he wanted to give them a "now what?" moment.  Perhaps he just doesn't care.
My guess is a bit of all and probably more or maybe none and even less.  The point being that Hac has built the Bliss into a dynasty.  To him, it doesn't matter what the other teams do, say or think.  Wins are all that matters to Hac and he is racking up a lot of them.
Back to Jack, he took a lot of grief over a poor prediction a while back.  He might have miscalculated his analysis, but he has been invaluable to the Beat's coverage of the Bliss.  Crisp pictures, interview coordination and a lot of fun are on his Bliss resume.
Hac and Jack...two big reasons I enjoy covering the Bliss.

Friendly Encounters: Kristy McNichol and Jack Keenan

This is a weekly series about friends who have met celebrities.

Occasionally, other people join Johngy's Beat to cover various events.  One such pinch-hitter is Jack Keenan who has supplied his photographic skills to the cause.
I always appreciate the extra helping hand, but I really love it when the person gets some extra benefit out of working with me.  Such was the case at the recent Hollywood Celebrities Show.
Jack got to meet and do a little promo work with Kristy McNichol.  In his youth, Jack had a bit of a crush on Kristy (who didn't though?).
I have had my fun meeting many of my favorites and it was cool to see Jack interacting with Kristy.  He described her as charming and she told me she found him delightful.  It could not have worked out any better.

Friendly Encounters: Jack Keenan and Sherry Garrity

Friendly Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

Today I am featuring two people very helpful in our coverage of the Chicago Bliss.  Jack (aka "The Masterful One") Keenan and Sherry Garritty are also responsible for a great deal of fun.
Jack has handled the videography and the photography, along with plenty of logistical work.  His steady hand and keen eye account for the beautiful visuals in our coverage.
Sherry has been our press liaison on the team.  She is also a friend and an aspiring actress. She certainly has what it takes to make it as an actress and we will be able to say we knew her when.
Jack and Sherry work well together and they make my life that much easier.  Covering a team is a lot of fun, but it is also work.  Having Jack on my team and Sherry working with us maximizes the fun and minimizes the work.
Thank you to both of them and looking forward to another fun season on the Bliss Beat.

Friendly Encounters: Jack Keenan Meets Svengoolie (aka Rich Koz)

This is a weekly feature about friends who have met celebrities.

Jack Keenan (aka the Masterful One) has been my JohngysBeat.com partner on covering the Chicago Bliss.  Last year, he also pulled emergency backup duty at Resistance Pro.  The fact that Rich (Svengoolie) Koz was going to be at the show certainly helped me recruit him.
Jack is a fan of Svengoolie (aren't we all?).  If Jack is home on a Saturday night, odds are he will be watching Sven, like the rest of us.
I interviewed Koz (Sven) at the event and Jack provided his usual ace camera work.  That interview can be found at On the Beat with Svengoolie at Resistance Pro's "Welcome to My Nightmare."
I am glad I got to facilitate Jack meeting Sven.  It was Jack's first RPro show and it was definitely a great one.  Sven was a fantastic Guest of Honor.  Once again, a home run by RPro.

Friendly Encounters: Jack Keenan and Bridget McDonnell

This is a regular series about my friends who have met celebrities.

Jack Keenan has been a part of JohngysBeat.com for the entire ride on the Chicago Bliss bandwagon.  He proved invaluable with his steady camera work, occasional interview skills and all around logistical assistance.
Bridget McDonnell was one of the first rookie hopefuls we met and interviewed in 2014.  Bridget not only made the team, but made some nice plays on special teams and on the offensive line.  She also has been referred to as "the Voice of the Rookies."  Bridget is always up for an interview and always delivers an interesting one.
We have met Bridget many times, but the best was the recent time on the field in Ontario, CA, after the Bliss won their second straigh Legends Football League title.
Jack and Bridget are both winners and have both made contributions to JohngysBeat.com.  I appreciate them and hope to see more of them here in the future.

Friendly Encounters: Jack Keenan Meets Emily Greiner

This is a weekly feature about my friends who have met celebrities.

I met Jack Keenan through AU Sports and Memorabilia.  Jack helped me in my coverage of the Chicago Bliss last season, including an exciting playoff victory.  When I signed on to cover the Bliss in 2014, I asked Jack back to work with me.
I have written many times about how much fun I think the Bliss are.  I believe Jack would echo those sentiments.  He certainly is not doing this because I am great company!
This is a perfect example for all of you non-fans.  Until last season Jack was not a fan of the Bliss.  I am not even sure he had heard of the Bliss.  Yet, within a few practices and games, he developed an interest, just like I did.
I cannot say it enough.  The Chicago Bliss is a blast.  The Legends Football League is a blast.  These women are as tough and beautiful as can be.  There is no better combination of toughness and beauty than found in the LFL and on the Chicago Bliss in particular.
Be like Jack.  Be like me.  Discover the Chicago Bliss.  Their first game is April 5 in Milwaukee.  Their second game is their home opener on May 9.  Come on out and see what we already know.  The Bliss is one of the best kept secrets in Chicago and I am doing my best to make it not so secret!
