Happy Birthday Cuzz!

Today I celebrate the birthday of my longtime friend Cuzz.
Cuzz is "Cuzz" becuzz our gang already had a "Chuck" Gekas. He soon became "Cuzz" to us and he eagerly embraced the moniker. Born out of necessity (or at least clarity and convenience), "Cuzz" actually fits him well. He is Cuzz.
In all seriousness, by either name, Cuzz is a great friend and human. I've been fortunate to call him a friend for more than 20 years. He have traveled the country, seen dozens of sports events, started a BackUp Catcher Hall of Fame and have had a lot of fun.
Part of that fun happens at comic cons. Cuzz has been a huge help to me at cons over the years, but more importantly, I enjoy his company on these trips.
I did put him to extra work a few years back when I asked him to interview former boxer Jack O'Halloran. A boxing aficionado, Cuzz was the perfect person to handle the interview and he did a great job with it. That interview is at On the Beat With Jack O'Halloran.
Cuzz is a man of deep faith and I appreciate his insight and ear. I have learned a lot through Cuzz and I hope it has made me a better person and believer.
Happy birthday to Cuzz. I hope your day is awesome and I am looking forward to celebrating with you soon.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #505: Halloween Edition: A.J. Lee & Leva Bates

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a weekly series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebrities wearing jerseys. Today, I present a special Halloween edition.

April Jeanette Mendez was born in New Jersey and dreamed of becoming a pro wrestler. She was misdiagnosed with depression, before being properly treated for a bipolar disorder. AJ rose to the top of the WWE, married CM Punk, wrote a book about her experiences and retired from the ring. She remains active in raising awareness for mental issues and is quite an inspiration. During her career, her character went through several phases. One such phase saw her cosplay as Kane. Her bit as the Big (little?) Red Machine earned her this Special Edition Celebrity Jersey Card.

A native of Kentucky, Leva Bates has a degree in theater and radio and television production with a minor in dance from Murray State University. She worked as an entertainer at at Universal Studios in Florida, but she gained real fame in the wrestling ring. "Blue Pants" has incorporated cosplaying into her wrestling persona. She currently wrestles for All Elite Wrestling, but she earned her Celebrity Jersey Card by becoming Mankind.

Congrats and Best Wishes to Dominique Collins

Tomorrow, Dominique Collins is getting married. I couldn't be happier for DC.
I have written many times about DC. She is the first player from the Chicago Bliss I interviewed at a game. DC is one of my favorite interviews and she is near the top of most interviews I have done. She is a four time Legends Football League champ with the Bliss. She is one of the hardest working, smartest and toughest competitors I have ever met on or off the field.
After finally retiring from the Bliss, DC moved to Texas. As sad as I was to see her leave the area, I was happy when I saw how happy she was. Then she met the man of her dreams and got even happier.
DC deserves every bit of happiness. I'd say her husband is a lucky guy, but I think they are both lucky to have found each other.
I hope our paths cross again sometime. I'd love to see DC and give her a big hug. I appreciate all she did for me, including the many interviews. Meeting people like DC is one of the best parts of doing "Johngy's Beat."
Congratulations DC. I wish you a lifetime of happiness!

On the Beat With John Cosper of Eat Sleep Wrestle

Monday night I was back "On the Beat" with author John Cosper. As a returning guest, John is quickly becoming a favorite interview, because the sessions for me are a combination of talking to a friend and learning about the history of wrestling.

In this interview, we start with some serious chat about Charlie Kruel suffering a major concussion. Fortunately, Charlie seems to be okay, except for the loss of her gear.

Also, our friend the legendary Tracy Smothers is suffering more health issues. John gives a quick update in the interview, as well as on EatSleepWrestle.com.

On to happier topics, John gave us the details on two new books he will be writing for release in 2021. John is writing books on Princess Victoria and Chris Candido, two very interesting people who excelled in the ring.

Princess Victoria was a wrestling star in the 80s, but as I learned from John, her story goes well beyond her in-ring career. John spoke of the serious nature of the subject matter, but the importance of that story being told. Of course, I was familiar with her wrestling career, but I didn't know of her backstory. As tough of a read as it might be, I am really looking forward to learning more about her. John is working with Victoria, which will make this book even more personal and insightful.

Chris Candido was a tremendous wrestler who died too soon. An underrated, but very successful wrestler, Candido's story is another one I can't wait to read. John is teaming with Johnny, brother of Chris, which makes this a real insider's look into the fascinating life of Chris.

John's book resume keeps growing. Already an author of more than 20 books, John also mentioned a future project after the books on Princess Victoria and Candido. I am always interested in learning more about interesting wrestling folks and John is the perfect person to bring those stories to us.

I thank John for his time and consideration. I also look forward to continuing to hear his stories and his thoughts on wrestling. We even talked a bit about the Chicago Bears, but pehaps we brought them a bit of bad luck as they suffered a bad loss right after this interview.

I encourage everyone to check out EatSleepWrestle.com for more info on John and his books. Also, look back here for recurring coverage of and with John.

Baron Von Raschke at PopCon Milwaukee 2017

Stating the obvious, things were so different when I was growing up. You need look no further than the world of pro wrestling.
Back then, there was still the illusion that wrestling was real. Oh sure, we all knew it was staged, but there was a sliver of doubt. We didn't see our wrestling heroes all over the media. There was still a lot of mystery behind wrestling. Either way, we simply enjoyed the pure entertainment it delivered.
Wrestlers used maneuvers like "The Boston Crab," the sleeper hold, the heart punch and more. One of my favorites was the claw.
Few wrestlers did the claw better than Baron Von Raschke. The claw was billed as "the most dangerous hold in all of wrestling." Whether applied to the head or other body areas, the claw could do serious damage. The best wrestling holds are ones that legit could hurt people. We all practiced these hols on friends.
Back then, the Baron was a dangerous villain. Only after the internet revealed details did we learn that the Baron was really James Raschke from Hastings, MN. He had a great 30+ year career. He never won a major singles title in the big companies, but back then, titles were exchanged weekly. There were many stars like the Baron who never won a singles title. These men built the sport. Nobody thought less of any of them for not winning a heavyweight title.
I met the Baron a few years ago in Milwaukee, WI. He could not have been any nicer. We talked about his legendary career.  We talked about how popular he was in the midwest. He was huge.
He had a great time at this event. He talked to NHL HOFer Bobby Hull and MLB HOFer Fergie Jenkins. These men were all stars in the area in the late 60s and early 70s. It was cool seeing three men of different sports all reminiscing.
The Baron gladly put up the claw every time he was asked and he was asked a lot. He embraced the fans and loved hearing our memories.
It was a simpler time. Wrestlers didn't do athletic moves like triple flips off the top rope. The modern wrestler is much more athletic and can do more spectacular moves, but I'll take the claw any day of the week.

Friend Encounters: Clark, Ty Ali, Dominique Collins, Deena Fagiano and Matt Pike

Friend Encounters is a weekly series of my friends meeting celebrities.

This picture has everything. It's football players and a coach with a baseball mascot. It features two of my favorite Chicago Bliss players and two of my favorite interview subjects.
I covered the Bliss and the Legends Football League for years. It was a bumpy ride at times. The league wasn't very open to outside media. In fact, at one point I was criticized for being too positive about the Bliss.
First, the Bliss was the most positive thing about the LFL. They won four championships over the last decade. They had the biggest team, coaching staff and fan base.
Second, why would a league not want positive coverage? I wasn't telling lies. I was highlighting the best of the team and the league.
The league has since rebranded as the X League. I am sure it is a financial thing. It has been under criticism from former players and coaches. The pandemic caused the 2020 season to be canceled. It will be interesting to see what happens in 2021.
All of the controversy aside, I made great friends in Dominique Collins and Deena Fagiano, two of the stars of the Bliss and two of my favorite interview subjects. I only met Coach Pike a few times, but we had fun conversations and I remember him from his days as quarterback at Purdue.
I will always have fun memroies of the Bliss. I hope to remain friends with DC, Deena and several others and I look forward to seeing where their careers go.
Covering the Bliss wasn't always easy, but I had a lot of fun. Sometimes, you just take the good and forget the bad.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #504 Paul Stanley & Kelly Clarkson

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a weekly series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebrities wearing sports jerseys. Today, is a Special Requests edition.

Making his first special request is Charles Alexander, a longtime reader of Global Traveler magazine, who added Johngy's Beat to his webstops. Self-described as a former Kiss Army General, Chuck requested Paul Stanley and I am happy to comply. I am a long time Kiss fan, although I never reached General status.
Born Stanley Eisen in Manhattan, NY, Stanley has been performing for more than 50 years, most of them being with Kiss. Stanley donned Kobe Bryant's #24 Los Angeles Lakers jersey on stage to earn his Celebrity Jersey Card.
Faithful reader and supporter Brian has made previous suggestions and I am always happy to tto get answer his requests. This time, he sent a picture of Kelly Clarkson in a Boston Celtics jersey. It seemed fitting to pair it with Stanley in a rival Lakers jersey.
A native of Fort Worth, Texas, Clarkson rose to fame as the winner of the first season on American Icon. Since then, she has sold more than 25 million albums and is still going strong. Clarkson performed in a Paul Pierce #34 Celtics jersey to earn her Celebrity Jersey Card.

Cards That Never Were: Joe Reed Topps 1973, '75 & '79

Cards That Never Were is a recurring series in which I create virtual trading cards for players who were missed in various sets. It is a concept I have borrowed from far too many to list, but I appreciate all of their efforts. Many creations (and not just baseball) from others can be found in the Custom Baseball Cards Facebook group.
Joe Reed was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the 11th round of the 1971 NFL draft. Reed debuted in 1972, appearing in nine games, without attempting any passes. He started thee games in 1973 and four games in 1974. He was traded to the Detroit Lions after the '74 season. In five seasons with the Lions, he started 12 games, serving mostly as a backup to Greg Landry. All told, he threw for 2,825 yards with 18 touchdowns and 31 interceptions.
For his efforts, Tops gave Reed cards in their 1974, '76, '77 and '78 sets. That left Reed out of the  1973, '75, '79 and '80 sets. Lynn from the aforementioned Custom Baseball Cards FB group created a Reed 1973 card. Inspired by Lynn, I made Reed cards for 1975 and '79. I have neither the picture or the creative skills to make a 1980 card for Reed, but maybe Lynn or another creative person will eventually produce one.

DJ Erin Morris at Resistance

I had seen Erin Morris many times on the Chicago independent wrestling scene, but somehow I never got a picture with her. A talented manager, Erin was always entertaining at shows.
I was pleasantly surprised when I saw her at Resistance Pro many years ago. It was cool to be working on the same show as she was after all these years. It was also great to finally get a picture with the elusive Erin.
I learned a lot about Erin through our working at RPro. It's a bit of a sad tale though. Erin fell on her steps several winters ago. She hit her head and hasn't been the same physically since. She has endured lots of pain and also the stress of not being able to do the things she loves, like being more involved in wrestling. Of course, I join all of her friends in hoping that eventually things will normalize and she can have a relatively pain-free existence.
Erin did some managing at RPro, but mostly she has been in charge of the entrance music and deejay work. It's always good seeing her at the shows. Despite her problems, she is always good for a laugh (or some swearing).

Absurdities: Cheerios Tic-Tac-"O"

I don't know if this will be the first in a recurring series. I just know I had to write about something I found completely absurd. I was very happy to see Pumpkin Cheerios (I refuse to call them Pumpkin Spice Cheerios, but that's another story) back in the grocery stores. I bought several boxes, loading up for a few months worth of pump[kin Cheerios greatness.
While enjoying my first bowl, I looked at the back of the box and found the gem pictured below. General Mills was thoughtful enough to provide entertainment for their customers in addition to the oat cereal in the box. It's too bad the thoughtfulness produced a ridiculous game.
Tic-Tac-"O" is obviously a take off of Connect Four. I would have said Tic-Tac-Toe, but the goal is to get four in a row. My first problem is the playing pieces. One player uses a Cheerio, while the other player bites a Cheerio in half for his piece. Okay, maybe I am being too harsh, but that sounds ridiculous.
Even more ridiculous is the game board itself. It's a 4 squares by 4 squares playing field. How hard will it be to actually place four pieces in a row? Unless one player is completely sleeping, I don't see how this game would ever end in anything but a tie. This is even sillier considering the playing field could have been expanded. They could have easily gone 8x8, maybe even 10x10. Then at least someone would have a chanxce at getting four in a row.
This stuff drives me nuts. It's especially infuriating because I see it every time I attempt to enjoy another bowl of pumpkin Cheerios tastiness.

On the Beat With Joey Roth and Steve Ahrendt of Chicagoland Championship Wrestling-10/19/20

Earlier this week, I had the pleasure of being back "On the Beat" with Joey Roth and Stever Ahrendt, the broadcast team for Chicagoland Championship Wrestling. A few weeks ago, prior to the debut of CCW on October 3, I interviewed the pair which can be found at On the Beat With Steve Ahrendt and Joey Roth.

Now, a couple weeks after the debut, it was time for an update. Steve and Joey talked about the debut, their predictions for the title match, thoughts on CCW in general, the next CCW show on April 17, 2021 and more. Who better to discuss CCW's debut, than the two men who sat 10 feet from the ring, watching the action closely. Having these guys talk about anything is entertaining.

I appreciate Steve and Joey for their time, consideration, humor and friendship. I encourage everyone to follow both on social media. Also, go to ChicagolandChampionshipWrestling.com for all of the info on CCW. As always, check back here for my recurring coverage.

Svengoolie at Flashback Weekend 2018

Flashback Weekend was postponed to 2021 due to the pandemic. While I won't have fun there this year, I recall some of the great folks I have met there in the past.. One of the most popular celebrity guests is always Svengoolie (aka Rich Koz).
Rich has been entertaining fans for 40+ years. While at Northwestern University, Rich sent some tapes to Jerry Bishop, the original Svengoolie. Bishop used the material and invited Rich to be on his show. When he retired, Bishop allowed Rich to take the Svengoolie name. Over the years, Rich's show has been on a few stations under different titles.
Rich is one of the hardest working and nicest people I have ever met. Despite making many appearances over the years, Rich/Sven remains one of the most sought-after celebrities. I once saw people drive from St. Louis, just to meet Sven.
I have seen Rich at many appearances. He is tireless in his efforts to make it a fun time for all. He is one of the best celebrity guests I have ever seen.
More importantly, I am proud to call Rich a friend. It is surreal talking to him as a friend, after watching him on television since my teens.
Svengoolie will be at Flashback Weekend this weekend. Many other great celebs will be there, too. All of this adds up to a weekend of fun. I never miss Flashback Weekend and I am really looking forward to this one. After a lengthy stretch of being quarantined and having all events postponed, it will be wonderful to be back on the convention scene.
Go to Svengoolie.com to learn more about this legend. Also. check FlashbackWeekend.com for info and updates on the convention.

Chad Savage at Flashback Weekend

Flashback Weekend was supposed to have been in August, but the pandemic caused it to be postponed until next year. Until things return to normal, I can at least feel good thinking about the many interesting folks I have met there over the years.
Drawing at an early age, Chad Savage has turned his childhood fascination into a successful career. Specializing in the horror genre, Chad's work has appeared in print and on the web for many companies and projects. He started Sinister Visions, a company providing web design, print design, illustration, and more for horror and related industries. Sinister Visions currently hosts/manages close to 200 dark websites.
Chad offers a ton of merch. My favorite so far is ScareClown. What's no to love about a freakish clown?
Chad doesn't need any suggestions from me, but I would love to see his take on sports mascots. Regular readers know of my fascination with mascots. I think Chad would make some awesome versions.
I always look forward to seeing what new stuff Chad has and he never disappoints. Hopefully, I will see him again this year when things calm down.
Learn more about Chad and his dark art at ChadSavage.com and SinisterVisions.com. Also check FlashbackWeekend.com for news and scheduling updates.

Friend Encounters: Mick Foley and Glen Rylko

Friend Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

Glen Rylko and I became friends after crossing paths at comic cons and wrestling events. Before we officially met, we both attended a Mick Foley book signing at Borders Books in Oak Park, IL.
Mick was promoting Mick Foley's Christmas Chaos, a fun Christmas story illustrated by Jerry "The King" Lawler. A noted lover of all things Christmas, Mick came wearing a Santa hat and was in his best holiday spirit. Of course, the line that wrapped around the block waiting to buy his book probably boosted his spirits (and also exhausted him by the end of the day).
Mick has published several books, including fiction tales, illustrated books and autobiographies. I have read and enjoyed all of them. I have attended several of his book signings and he is always great there, as well as at comic cons and wrestling events.
With events postponed this year, I haven't seen Glen in a while. Hopefully soon, that will change. Maybe we will even see Mick, too.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #503 Yankees Kevin Harvick & Danny Willett

This is a regular series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebrities wearing jerseys. Once again, we are working our way alphabetically through all of the Major League Baseball teams.

California native Kevin Harvick is a stock car racer. Nicknamed "The Closer" and "Happy Harvick,"   is the third of only five drivers that have won a championship in both the Sprint Cup Series and the Xfinity Series. Harvick also won the 1998 Winston West Series title. Harvick raced (sorry) to the mound to toss a ceremonial pitch for the New York Yankees and earned his Celebrity Jersey Card.
Born in England, golfer Danny Willett plays on the European Tour. He won his first major championship at the 2016 Masters Tournament, becoming only the second Englishman to achieve the feat and the first European in 17 years to win at Augusta National. Willett threw out a ceremonial pitch for the Yankees and landed on a Celebrity Jersey Card, but did he wear the number "Four" (sorry)?

Rest In Peace Jacinda Barclay

Earlier this week, I woke up to the terribly sad news that Jacinda Barclay died. All social media feeds were filled with messages of love and sadness over Jacinda's passing.
Born in 1991 in Australia, Jacinda played baseball, Australian football, and American football at the highest levels. She not only played, she excelled at all, playing for the Australian national team in five Women's Baseball World Cups, the Chicago Bliss in the Legends Football League and Greater Western Sydney in the AFL Women's competition.
A right-handed pitcher, Jacinda made her state debut for Western Australia at the age of 15 at the 2006 national championships. Jacinda played for the Australian national team in the 2008 World Cup at the age of 17. She won a silver medal at the 2010 World Cup and played in the World Cup three more times.
At the young age of 12, Jacinda began playing Australian football. Jacinda played with the New South Wales Surge for the inaugural 2013–14 season of LFL Australia. Leading the Surge to the title, she earned the Best Offensive Player award. In 2016, she joined the Chicago Bliss and won another championship.
Jacinda worked hard on and off the field. Over the years, she held several jobs, juggling her various schedules to make a living and still play the sports she loved. She was an assistant life-support technician, who worked off-shore for two-to-five weeks at a time, a laborer, a ward clerk at a private hospital and other roles. Above all, she was a gifted athlete who worked tirelessly to be the best.
Global Women's Sports Radio founder Henry Gee interviewed Jacinda several years ago. That interview is even more special now.
I didn't know Jacinda very well. I do know she was a tremendously positive person, who exuded energy. Jacinda's impact and legacy go well beyond statistics, awards and championships. Rather than me trying to properly honor her memory, I am turning to friends and former teammates who knew her better.
Former Chicago Bliss teammate Deena Fagiano wrote, “Devastated, my heart is broken. The world has lost the brightest light, most badass athlete, and amazing friend Jacinda Barclay.
I am honored to have had you in my life and play along side you. Your energy was Infectious and I will always be inspired by your determination.
Your bravery to travel around the world to lead a team you had never met always continues to impress me and I will always have incredible respect for you. You Always Always made me laugh by doing some goofy "Aussie" something and I will continue to hold on to those memories forever!
RIP girl. Love you and you will always be missed.”
Former Chicago Bliss teammate Dominique Collins wrote, “Speechless and devastated. The world will no longer feel your electrifying energy. The world has lost someone very, very special today. Cinda Barclay you are hands down the hardest worker I've ever met. The entire world is devastated. You've touched so many lives with your compassion, sense of humor and leadership. You played National Baseball, Australian and American Football and have championships with all of them. You are literally untouchable. I thank God I was blessed to have you as a teammate and I pray I get to corner blitz on you when we play again someday.
RIP Jacinda. We love you.”
Former Chicago Bliss teammate Yashi Rice wrote, “You were a gift to the world. Rest well teammate.”
Former Surge teammate Bonnie Gillespie wrote, “Love you always and forever Cinda Barclay.
Yesterday brought heartache for family, Friends, Supporters/fans many all over the world .
Receiving a message this morning, I dropped my phone in shock...disbelief as I recently  spoke with her. I couldn't believe it and was saying to myself "it cant be true!” Cinda your smile, your welcoming free loving heart, your positive personality, your uplifting spirit, the way you spoke to people, your patience, your peaceful aura didn't have to leave us.”
Former Surge teammate Shari Olney wrote, “My heart is broken, this hurts so badly, words cannot suffice.
Your smile and laugh lit up every room. You gave everyone the time of day. A true individual, a free spirited, unique beauty and a wonderful loyal friend.
Your sporting prowess was admirable, no short cuts, no excuses, a warrior mentality, that ethic always resonated with me. Sport brought us together, but the ability to create a deep human connection and laugh until our bellies ached kept our friendship alive long after.
You were supportive, resilient and always the optimist. You were an Inspiration to many, you’ll always be my sunshine. My sincerest condolences go out to your family. I know I won’t meet anyone quite like you and I’ll never forget you my JBomb Cinda Barclay”
Former Bliss QB coach Matt Pike stated, "I’m sitting here writing this with a broken heart and tears in my eyes. A lot of you have seen posts and videos of my amazing friend and qb Cinda Barclay, and I am saddened to share she has passed on.
She was one of the most competitive, hard working, relentless on her pursuit to be the best.
When I was struggling and few years ago, she always had something to say that made it better for me, she always just had a way to communicate positively about things with honesty. She was a true friend, teammate, leader, and comedian.
This one hurts and I’m at a loss for words.
I’m truly gonna miss our talks via FaceTime and that West Aussie accent. Love you my friend.”
Lastly, former Chicago Bliss Head Coach Keith Hac wrote a beautifully heartfelt, lengthy statement on Facebook. He started with, “I write this story with a broken heart.” Coach Hac then wrote of his history with Jacinda. He summed it poignantly with his last paragraph. “As a coach you see players come and go. Some impact more then others. For all the right reasons, Jacinda will forever be one of those that I will never forget and I am a better person for knowing her for the amount of time I did. You will be missed.”
I debated how I wanted to write this story. I wanted to give a brief biography on Jacinda, but I wasn't sure what else I could write to honor Jacinda in the best way. Then I realized it was better to let others write the most important parts.
Jacinda touched so many lives. She left everyone with warm memories that go beyond the football field. Jacinda will be missed terribly, but will never be forgotten. Rest in Peace, Jacinda Barclay.

Krista Green at Wizard World Chicago 2017

The pandemic has interfered with the Wizard World summer schedule. While waiting for things to return to normal, I am recalling some fun over my many years at Wizard World events all over the country.
Sometimes some of the coolest guests are total accidents or surprises. Such was the case when I ran into Krista Green of WCIU.
Because of the size and activity happening, it's not easy to stand out at a Wizard World event. As I walked into Wizard World Chicago a few years ago, I immediately saw Krista. I was familiar with her work on WCIU and couldn't believe my luck in seeing her to start my day.
A 2015 grad of the University of Illinois, native Chicagoan Krista is the social media maven for The Jam. She is on top of the latest trends and viral topics. She has endless energy, charisma and personality.
Krista was at Wizard World doing features for WCIU, but she was kind enough to give this reporter a few minutes of her time in between her interviews. Krista even came dressed appropriately for aa comic con. Clearly Krista gives all for her job.
Krista is so much fun on WCIU and she was even more fun at Wizard World. She was the perfect person to cover such an event. She was totally in the spirit.
Krista is also a lot of fun on social media. You can find her at @ItsKristaGreen on twitter and at @ItsKristaGreen on Instagram.
Also, check FanExpoHQ.com for news on the revised schedule.  You don't want to miss any comic con fun.

On the Beat With Paige Jones of Girl Fight Wrestling

Girl Fight Wrestling returns this Saturday, October 17, as Epic Wrestling Entertainment presents Girl Fight Wrestling: Night of the Living Girl Fight. This one promises to be historic as a new Girl Fight Wrestling World Champion will be crowned.
One of the competitors is Paige Jones. Paige is the wife of the legendary Larry D, most notably seen on Impact Wrestling. Paige is proud and happy to be Larry's wife, but make no mistake, she is her own person and carving her own exciting path in wrestling.
Yesterday. I had the pleasure of interviewing Paige. As is usual with our introductory interviews, I asked Paige about her wrestling background and her wrestling favorites. We talked about death matches, intergender matches, wrestling with (and possibly against?) her husband and more fun topics. She also talked about what drew her to Girl Fight Wrestling and what her strategy would be in the Broad Brawl.
Of course, I had to ask Paige about Larry wrestling for Impact. You can feel her pride and happiness for him as she speaks. She talked about the unplanned moment of joining him at Impact. That type of emotion and reaction is what draws me into wrestling. Knowing it was not planned makes it even more of a special moment.
With all due respect to Larry though, this interview was about Paige. Still, those lines are blurred sometimes, in all the right ways. It is obvious they are a team in and out of wrestling, but listening to Paige, you quickly realize they are two individuals who make a strong team, but are also forces on their own.
The many other women in the Broad Brawl will see just what kind of force Paige is. The Broad Brawl will start with two women in the ring. Another woman will enter every 30 seconds. The last woman standing at the end of the night will be the new Girl Fight Wrestling World Champion. As I said in the interview, Paige might just be the dark horse in this battle.
Several other women have also been announced for the Broad Brawl. They include the purple haired maniac Charlie Kruel (recently interviewed on Global Women's Sports Radio), former Girl Fight Wrestling champ Mickie Knuckles, Billie Starkz, Hazel Croux, Aleida Ortiz, Destiny, Blair Onyx, Valentina Loca, Sabrina Hexx, Arie Alexander, Heather Wreckless, Megan DiFrancisco, Hannah Henderson, Kayla Kassidy and more.
There are a few other matches on the card, too. Mickie Knuckles will battle Charlie Kruel in a Grudge Match stemming from their interaction at the last Girl Fight Wrestling event. This match could headline any show. Also, Blair Onyx will face Billie Starkz and Heather Wreckless will face Valentina Loca. Of special note is the women in the singles matches will then be part of the Broad Brawl. Ordinarily, I would think they would be battered and weakened for the Broad Brawl, but knowing these women, it will probably give them an extra charge.
Epic Wrestling Entertainment presents Girl Fight Wrestling: Night of the Living Girl Fight on Saturday, October 17 at their new venue, the Arena on Spring Street in Jeffersonville, Indiana. The doors open at 6 p.m. With a bell time of 7 p.m.
As promoter Mad Man Pondo stressed in our interview a couple months ago, Girl Fight Wrestling puts the spotlight squarely on the talented women wrestlers. At Girl Fight Wrestling: Night of the Living Girl Fight that spotlight will be on a lot of tough women, ending with one holding the Girl Fight Wrestling championship belt.
I really appreciate Paige's time and consideration for our interview. She is a lot of fun and she is tough as can be. Will Paige walk away with a new title belt? Check back here for recurring coverage of Girl Fight Wrestling. Go to the Girl Fight Wrestling Facebook page for more info. Also, check out Paige Jones on Facebook.

Robert Kramer of Double Treble Dueling Pianos

Earlier this week, I wrote about John Guerrini and Double Treble. Today, I am featuring Robert Kramer, the other half of Double Treble.
Like Guerrini, Robert is a long time accomplished musician. A serious neck injury interrupted his career a bit in the 90s, but it didn't stop his productivity. When not performing on stage, he turned his whole attention to composing, which led to an all original classical renaissance album, "Songs Of Past Lives."
Eventually, he also released his first commercial pop/rock record, "Blood On The Full Moon." Indie film Monkey Love used "Who Says?," a song from the album.
As I wrote yesterday, Double Treble blends original music with their takes on all forms of music from the Beatles to Vanilla Ice. They also mix in a bit of humor, to add to the fun without it becoming a joke fest. Double Treble is finely polished, while being completely naturally. They really are a fun act that I highly recommend. I also wrote more about seeing Double Treble at Double Treble at Moretti's for Global Traveler.
Check the Double Treble Dueling Pianos Facebook page for more info and updates. Go to RobertKramerMusic.com for more info.

The Hair Extraordinaire

One of my first independent wrestling shows was a POWW event. The ring announcer had a beautiful, but unusual hair style. He entered the ring and quickly had the crowd in his hands. He was magic on the mic. Mr. Ricolo was clearly unique.
Our interview with him can be found at On the Beat With Mr. Ricolo. It will give you a small sample of the Ricolo experience.
Over the years, I have seen Ricolo at many events. He is a great ring announcer and ambassador for the sport. A good ring announcer adds to the fun, without overshadowing the wrestlers. This is exactly what Ricolo does.
It's not my place to break kayfabe, but if you know Ricolo well, you probably now all about his family. If you go to any event where Ricolo is, chances are you'll see a few family members with him. They are quite a fun family. Mom is a real sweetheart and the kids are cool.
Ricolo is a great combination of old school and modern. He is a throwback in many ways, but he is highly relatable in today's wrestling. H adapts. He keeps up. He is pure entertainment and I am proud to know him and call him a friend.
I don't see Ricolo much these days. Fortunately, when we do see each other, it's still two old friends reconnecting. Once wrestling resumes, I hope to see Ricolo again this year. When it comes to ring announcing, nobody can compare to the Hair extraordinaire.

John Guerrini of Double Treble

John Guerrini started playing musical professionally while still in high school. Over the years, John has performed as a solo artist and in various bands, as front man or part of the ensemble. His talent and versatility allow him to perform in any sort of combination and at any type of venue or event.
One of his endeavors is Double Treble Dueling Pianos, with Robert Kramer. A couple weeks ago, I had the pleasure of experiencing a night of Dueling Pianos at Moretti's as we celebrated my friend Jim Strong's birthday. It was my first time hearing Double Treble and I was very impressed and entertained. I wrote more about the night at Double Treble at Moretti's for Global Traveler.
Double Treble features John and Robert playing tunes from all sorts of music genres, from the Beatles to Vanilla Ice. They also mix in some original music and humor. Their sets not only encourage clapping and singing along, it almost demands it. The end result is pure entertainment.
I also learned that John formed his own band, Knievel's Daredevil Band, featuring Krysten Knievel, the granddaughter of the legendary daredevil, Evel Knievel, and daughter of world-renowned Kaptain Robbie Knievel, center stage on vocals. I'm looking forward to seeing them perform in the future.
Check the Double Treble Dueling Pianos Facebook page for more info and updates. Go to GuerriniMusic.com for more info.

Friendly Encounters: Josh Blue and Jean Parker

Friend Encounters is a weekly series featuring my friends who have met celebrities.

My sister Jean is always trying to help me. She has given me many great blog ideas for Global Traveler and several excellent celebrity pictures for the Beat. A couple years ago, Jean and her friend saw comedian Josh Blue and Jean sent this picture to me.
Blue started doing stand-up comedy while in college. Much of his self-deprecating humor is centered on living with cerebral palsy. He was voted the Last Comic Standing on NBC's reality show Last Comic Standing during its fourth season in 2006. He followed that by being the first comedian to do stand-up on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
He has continued on the comedy club scene and also makes television appearances. His 1 million followers on Facebook are testament to his popularity.
Go to JoshBlue.com for more info and to purchase his comedy DVDs, shirts and other cool stuff. Also, follow Josh Blue on Facebook, for news and updates.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #501 White Sox

This is a regular series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebrities wearing jerseys. Once again, we are working our way alphabetically through all of the Major League Baseball teams.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #502 LeRoy Nieman & Jimmy Stewart

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a weekly series in which I create virtual cards for celebrities wearing sports jerseys. Today, we continue our trip alphabetically through the Major League Baseball teams.

Born in Minneapolis, MN, LeRoy Nieman rose to fame for his brilliantly colored, expressionist paintings of pop culture figures. Nieman died in 2012, shortly after his 9st birthday. Nieman earned his Celebrity Jersey Card while throwing a ceremonial pitch for the Chicago White Sox.

Actor Jimmy Stewart was born in Indiana, PA. He had a legendary 60 year acting career, which included a main role in Its A Wonderful Life, a Christmas favorite. He also played the title role in The Stratton Story, the biographical film about White Sox pitcher Monty Stratton. That role earned Stewart his Celebrity Jersey Card.

Cards That Never Were: Bob Stinson Topps 1973 & '81

Cards That Never Were is a recurring series in which I create virtual trading cards for players missed in various sets. It is a concept I have borrowed from too many to list, but I appreciate all of them. Many more of my creations, as well as a lot of awesome creations from others (and not just baseball cards) can be found in the Custom Baseball Cards Facebook group.
After being selected by two other teams in previous drafts, Bob Stinson was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1st round of the 1966 amateur draft. He made his MLB debut in 1969 with the Dodgers, appearing in four games. He again appeared in four games in 1970 and then was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals. After one season with the Cards, he was traded to the Houston Astros. Prior to the 1973 season, he was purchased by the Montreal Expos. He saw increased playing time with the Expos, but was again traded, this time to the Kansas City Royals before the 1975 season. Two seasons later, the Seattle Mariners selected Stinson n the 1976 expansion draft. He retired after the 1980 season, ending a 12 year MLB career.
In 652 games, he hit a solid .250, with 408 hits and 33 home runs. Mostly a catcher, Stinson saw action at every position except for shortstop and pitcher.
For his efforts, Stinson appeared on Topps cards from 1970 through 1980, except for 1973. Lynn from the Custom Cards FB group fixed the first omission by creating a 1973 card and I gave Stinson a "career capper" 1981 card.

On the Beat With the Las Vegas Aces 10/06/20

Yesterday, I featured the 2020 WNBA champion Seattle Storm. Despite being defeated by the Storm in the Finals, the Las Vegas Aces should be proud of the successful season they had.
The Aces finished 18-4 to take 1st place in the Western Conference and a #1 seed in the playoffs. The Finals featured the top two teams and the Storm came out on top. After the final loss, Aces' coach Bill Laimbeer and players A'ja Wilson, Angel McCouughtry and Kayla McBride appeared in the press session. Like the Storm, all talked about the game, the series, the season and the importance of what was accomplished. All echoed the sentiments of the Storm in stating they would continue to use their platform to raise awareness and affect social change.
For me, this was an incredible season. With no outside media on site, media sessions were open to the press via Zoom. I had the opportunity to talk to star players like Diana Taurasi, Sue Bird, Courtney Vandersloot and Candace Parker. Although ordinarily I would have been part of the press at Chicago Sky home games, I never would have been able to talk at length to so many players and coaches around the league.
One special experience was developing a bit of a friendship with Las Vegas Aces coach Bill Laimbeer. The former NBA star had a noted rivalry with my Chicago Bulls during his playing days. While in high school, Laimbeer also had a part as a "Sleestak" on television's Land of the Lost. In our first session, when I asked about that role, he really opened up and we had a lot of fun all season.
Congratulations to the Storm for winning their second WNBA title in three years and to the Aces for a fantastic season. More importantly, congratulations to the entire league on successfully managing to have a season, crown a champ and promote social change. Go to WNBA.com for more info on the league. Also, check here for my recurring coverage of the league.

On the Beat With the 2020 WNBA Champion Seattle Storm 10/06/20

Last night, the Seattle Storm beat the Las Vegas Aces 92-59 to sweep the WNBA Finals and win the 2020 WNBA championship. The victory ended an historic WNBA season.
The Storm finished with a record of 18-4, which tied them with the Aces for 1st place in the Western Conference and a #2 seed in the playoffs.
In early July, WNBA teams arrived at the IMG Academy in Brandenton, Florida. The teams played 22 games in “the Wubble” with no fans in attendance.
Right from the start, the league as a whole and the players individually made it clear this season was about a lot more than basketball. Using their platform to promote social justice, encourage voting and raise money and awareness for charities, everyone was united and consistent with their messages.
The WNBA was the first major pro sports league to restart during the pandemic. With a couple minor exceptions, which did not affect team rosters, everyone remained healthy. The WNBA set the example for the NHL and NBA to follow.
WNBA commissioner Cathy Englebert is already planning for the 2021 season. Although the shortened season started in August this season, the regular season usually starts in May. After the game last night, the Storm's coach Gary Kloppenburg and players Sue Bird, Breanna Stewart and Alysha Clark appeared in media sessions. All involved gave their thoughts on the series, the season and the historic importance of what was accomplished. Right to the end, all stressed the need for social change and voting. All stated the messages will not end with the end of this season. They will continue to use their platform to have their voices heard. This is bigger than basketball, but basketball will continue to allow them to promote their messages.
Go to WNBA.com for more info on the Storm and the WNBA. Also check here for recurring coverage.

On the Beat With James Azrael of "It's Just A Game"

A while back, I did a review of It's Just a Game on Patch.com. It's Just A Game is a cool movie co-produced by my friend James Azrael. More recently, on Johngy''s Beat, I featured interview with James and Daniel Emery Taylor, co-producer, writer and director. Today, I am back with an update interview with James, who shares some exciting news.
It's Just A Game will be available on DVD on October 13, 2020. I am excited about the news.
I really enjoyed It's Just A Game, which James allowed me to watch for the review. I wrote back then that reviewing works from my friends is always tricky because of the possibility I won't like it. Fortunately, that wasn't a problem with It's Just A Game.
When I started watching it, I planned on only watching the first 15 minutes or so to get a feel for it, then come back later to watch the whole thing. That plan went away as I was immediately drawn into the movie.
It features a very talented group of young actors. I was so impressed by them. I was also impressed with the settings, camera work and pretty much everything about the movie. I wrote then it is destined to be a cult classic and I stand by that statement. James jokes about his minor acting role in the movie, but truthfully he did a great job in a part that, although it wasn't major, was a key role. In our update interview, James has a little fun, recreating part of one of his scenes.
After you watch our interview, go to the It's Just A Game Facebook page to learn more about it and to get more frequent updates. I'll also continue my recurring coverage here and hopefully have more interviews with James, Daniel and anyone else involved in It's Just A Game.
Thank you to James for his time again. Also, thanks to James and Daniel for giving me access to the movie and for their time and consideration from the beginning. It has been fun experiencing the process develop and I look forward to more projects from them.

On the Beat With John Cosper of Eat Sleep Wrestle

John Cosper is an award-winning writer and author with a resume that includes 25 years of writing sketch comedy, stage plays, film, television, and fiction. A long time fan of wrestling, John grew up cheering for “The Heartbreak Kid” Shawn Michaels and the Von Erich family. John's passion for wrestling merged with his talent with words in 2013 when he started writing Bluegrass Brawlers, his first book. His website, EatSleepWrestle.com soon followed, as did 20 other books.
Along the way, he crossed paths with wrestling legend Mad Man Pondo and the two formed a friendship. The two men worked together to produce Memoirs of a Mad Man, Pondo's autobiography. It's filled with wild stories, all true, from the even wilder life of Pondo.
John is also a fan of Girl Fight Wrestling, the promotion Pondo started. Girl Fight Wrestling is all about the women in all the right ways. The focus is on highlighting and promoting them. If you're looking for bikini wrestling, look elsewhere, although the ladies of Girl Fight Wrestling would do well in any type of match. At Girl Fight Wrestling, it's about featuring the finest women's wrestling and developing young stars, like Skye Blue, Billie Starkz, Su Yung and Charlie Kruel.
Kruel is the subject of one of John's latest books, Charlie Kruel: Escape From VHS Hell, which tells the origin of Charlie Kruel, the purple-haired maniac. Summoned from an old VHS tape, Kruel has to battle some familiar villains, while dealing with the real world. It's a thrilling story of one of the most unusual characters on the wrestling scene (and elsewhere).
I talked about this book with Charlie in an earlier interview. A couple days ago, I interviewed John and got his take on the book and other fun stuff.
John also gives his review of the recent Girl Fight Wrestling: Jawbreaker and previews Night of the Living Girl Fight, the upcoming event. John writes about Girl Fight Wrestling's events on EatSleepWrestle.com, but he was also kind enough to assist me with my coverage of Girl Fight Wrestling here on Global Women's Sports Radio.
Epic Wrestling Entertainment presents Girl Fight Wrestling: Night of the Living Girl Fight on October 17 at the Park Memorial UMC in Jeffersonville, Indiana. One match already signed pits Mickie Knuckles against Kruel. After their interaction at Jawbreaker, Mickie Knuckles demanded the match and Pondo granted that request.
The main event will be a Broad Brawl. The battle royal will start with two women and every 30 seconds another woman will enter the fray. The last woman standing will be crowned the Girl Fight Wrestling champion. A few women have already been announced, including Hazel Croux and Aleida Ortiz. I'm sure a lot of Girl Fight Wrestling's familiar faces will soon follow.
John will once again cover it for his site, while I'll be doing the same here. John has also agreed to rejoin me here for more talk of Girl Fight Wrestling.
Near the end of the interview, John stopped just short of giving a scoop on his next book project. He did promise to talk about it with me soon though.
His most recent book The Ballad of Cousin Elvira sheds light on a true pioneer in women's wrestling. It's the life story of Elvira Snodgrass, one of the biggest, yet unheralded, wrestling stars of the 1940s. As much as she was the biggest challenger to champion Mildred Burke, she is too often overlooked by many, but not by John, who has a keen appreciation for the history of wrestling.
The Ballad of Cousin Elvira showcases one of John's strengths. His appreciation for and knowledge of wrestling goes beyond the most famous. Selecting Snodgrass as the subject might not be the popular pick, but the book is a fascinating look at one of the first true characters in wrestling. In addition to Snodgrass, John has brought to life the stories of Tracy Smothers, David Schultz, Lord Carlton and more.
It was a lot of fun talking to John and we plan on doing more interviews. It's always a treat talking wrestling with someone who really appreciates wrestling, especially women's wrestling. I thank John for his time and I look forward to our next chat.
Go to EatSleepWrestle.com for more info on John and his books. Also, check the Eat Sleep Wrestle Facebook page for more frequent updates. Of course, be sure to check out the Girl Fight Wrestling Facebook page, too.

Friend Encounters: Shirley Jones and Tony Feddeler

Friend Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

I love this picture. This is really old school. Shirley Jones on The Partridge Family was a big part of our childhood television.
Jones has enjoyed a career spanning 65 years. She has acted on stage, movies and television, as well as released several music albums, including some as part of The Partridge Family. Jones even appeared as Drew's lady friend on The Drew Carey Show, giving her exposure to another generation of fans.
My buddy Tony has met a lot of celebrities and we have met several together. I really wanted to be at the Hollywood Celebrities Show when Tony met Shirley, but I could not make it.
Tony had a great time meeting Jones. I am a bit envious of Tony for this encounter. I just wonder if Tony gets extra pleasure when he beats me to a celeb.
I keep hoping that Jones does another appearance at a show around here. I'd still love to meet her. I might even invite Tony along.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #501 Seimone Augustus & Rebekkah Brunson

This is a regular series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebrities wearing jerseys. Once again, we are working our way alphabetically through all of the Major League Baseball teams. Today features WNBA-MLB crossovers.

After a stellar career at LSU, Seimone Augustus was selected by the Minnesota Lynx first overall in the 2006 WNBA Draft. After 14 seasons with the Lynx, Augustus signed with the Los Angeles sparks for the 2020-21 season. She wore #33 for the Lynx, but donned a #1 Twins jersey when she took part in a Lynx Night the Twins held. August gets extra points for taking some swings, which earned her a Celebrity Jersey Card. The #1 was probably best known for Eric Soderholm in the early part of his career.
After a great career at Georgetown, Rebekkah Brunson was selected by the Sacramento Monarchs in the 1st round of the 2004 WNBA Draft as the tenth overall pick. After six seasons with the Monarchs, the Lynx selected Brunson in the dispersal draft when the Monarchs folded. Brunson retired earlier this season, but not before becoming the first player to win 5 WNBA titles. She also holds the WNBA record for rebounds. She currently is an assistant coach with the Lynx. Brunsonw as also part of the Twins' Lynx Night, wearing #32 for the occasion and earning her Celebrity Jersey Card. Brunson wore #32 in her WNBA career, but LaTroy Hawkins wore it most famously for the Twins.

On the Beat With Steve Ahrendt and Joey Roth of Chicagoland Championship Wrestling

Chicagoland Championship Wrestling debuts tonight in Michigan City IN. A couple days ago, I was "On the Beat" with Steve Ahrendt and Joey Roth, who will be handling the broadcast.
When I interviewed CCW owner John Bullard, he spoke very highly of the broadcast team he put together. Ordinarily, I might think this was the usual promotion any good owner would do. In John's case, it is promotion, but it is straight from his heart. I know John well enough to know he really believes in this duo.
I agree with John's assessment. I have seen Joey in action at wrestling events and even as the interviewer for Johngy's Beat. I have also seen Steve, but only on videos. The duo promises to be electric. While I will be at the event, I will also listen later when the video is available, because I want to hear these two describe the action.
I don't know if this interview is the first time Steve an Joey appeared together as the broadcast team, but I am claiming it as such. If it's not the first, it is close enough.
Steve and Joey talked about the debut event, what brought them to CCW, their thoughts on owner John and more, including giving a prediction for the threeway heavyweight championship match pitting Marshe Rocket versus Garrisaon Creed versus Chris Logan.
I am excited about CCW's debut and hearing Steve and Joey on commentary. They are good guys and very talented. Owner John is the same. When you have good people, who are talented, coming together to start a new company, good things will follow and I am happy to be a part of it from the beginning.
It all starts tonight. Come out to Michigan City or watch it on Amazon Prime. Just don't miss it!
Thank you to Steve and Joey for their time and consideration. Thanks to John for giving me access.I appreciate all of them/

"Hardcore" Heather Owens and Podcasts

I quickly became a fan of "Hardcore" Heather Owens after seeing her wrestle at Resistance Pro Wrestling several years ago. Although she never won the RPro Women's title, she was a solid part of the women's roster over the years. I also saw Heather and her husband Ed Gonzales at comic and horror conventions and wrestling events.
Through all of those events, I would see Heather several times a year. Now, we all can see Heather on a regular basis on either of her two podcasts.
Heather and Ed discuss Funko Pop figures and alcohol on their Pop Drunk Podcast. Okay, maybe they talk Funko and drink alcohol. Either way, they are highly entertaining.
Meanwhile, Heather also co-stars with her best friend on the Best Friend Podcast. Described as "Just a couple of Classy Broads talking about Best Friend sh!t like Life, Family, Men, Food, Collectibles, Horror, Wrestling and Product Reviews!!!", they cover a lot of ground and they are quite entertaining. Not that there would be anything wrong with it, but this isn't just for women. The Best Friend Podcast is part of my regular podcast rotation.
Check out Pop Drunk on YouTube for all their videos. Also, check out the Best Friend Show Podcast on SoundCloud.

On the Beat With the Connecticut Sun 09/29/20

The Connecticut Sun lost 66-63 to the Las Vegas Aces in Game 5 of the WNBA Semi-Finals. Despite the loss ending the season for the Sun, it does not diminish what the team accomplished all season.
The Sun finished their season 10-12, good for 2nd place, behind the Chicago Sky (12-10) in the Eastern Conference. The Sun started 0-5, then 1-6, before winning 9 of their final 15 to clinch a 7th seed in the WNBA playoffs.
In the post-game presser, Coach Curt Miller and players Alyssa Thomas, Jasmine Thomas and DeWanna Bonner talked about the team, the season and the fans. They were obviously and understandably disappointed, but they were positive about the season and the future. They were a classy bunch all season right to the end.
In a season away from their home, secluded in Florida, filled with pandemic worries and social issues, the Sun pulled together and had an exciting season. They should be proud of their efforts and achievements.
I want to thank Coach Miler, the players, the entire organization and especially PR Manager Annette Hogan for the access all season. It was a lot of fun covering this team.
Go to WNBA.com for more info on the league, the teams and the players. Check here, GlobalTravelerUSA.com and GlobalWomensSportsRadio.com for more coverage.
