Cards That Never Were: Herb Washington Topps 1976

Cards That Never Were is a recurring series in which I create virtual trading cards for players who were missed in various sets over the years.  It is a concept I have borrowed from too many others to list, but I appreciate all of them.
Herb Washington had one of the most interesting baseball careers of all time.  He is the only player to receive a baseball card with his position listed as "Pinch Runner."  Being that all he did was pinch run, Topps really had no other choice.
The very fast Washington held the world record in both the 50 yard and 60 yard dash, while he attended Michigan State.  He also was used sparingly as a wide receiver for the Spartans.
After Oakland A's Manager Alvin Dark saw him compete in a track meet on television, Washington was invited to Spring Training in 1974 and made the team, despite having no real basseball experience.  The plan was to use him strictly as a pinch runner.
In 1974, he appeared in 92 games, scoring 29 runs and stealing 29 bases.  He was caught stealing 16 times.  That 64% success rate wasn't horrible, but it wasn't great either.
He was released early in the 1975 season, after appearing in only 13 games.  He scored 4 runs, had 2 stolen bases and was caught once.
His baseball career was over, but he would forever be remembered for his novelty.  He is the only non-pitcher to appear in over 100 games and never bat.  He was offered an at-bat at one point, but he declined.  He felt the significance of his career as such would be more memorable than the thrill of one at bat.
Despite the fact that he was released in May of 1975, I decided to create a virtual card for Washington for the 1976 set.  This is (obviously) a career capper for Washington.  I had to create a "runner" figure for the card, as all other cards had positional figures.  It is also very similar to his 1975 card, but because of his uniqueness and the lack of pictures in general, it isn't surprising.

ChrisDell Harris and the Chicago Bliss

The Chicago Bliss went 4-0 this season.  Unfortunately, they lost 14-6 to the Atlanta Steam in the conference championship.  The Steam is certainly deserves all due credit, but what happened to the Bliss and where do they go from here?
The first part of the question is easy.  They were beaten by a team that played the better game on that day.  If the game was played again, the result could easily have been different.
The Bliss held the powerful Steam offense to 14 points.  If you would have told me the Bliss would only give up 14 points, I would have predicted a big win.
That points the finger at the offense.  During the regular season, the Bliss outscored their opponents 63.3-8.3.  Quarterback Jayne Caldwell only threw for 38.3%, but she did have 13 TD's.  Besides, the Bliss offense never relied on a big air game, even duribng the Heather Furr years.
This loss basically comes down to a well-fought game, where Atlanta was the better team that day.  Nobody would have predicted the Bliss being held to 6 points.
Where the Bliss goes from here is the same place they always go.  The Bliss coaches are the best prepared coaches in the LFL, perhaps all of sports.  Coach Hac's motto of "ABR-Always Be Recruiting" has worked well in the past.  Stars retire and young players fill the gap.  One loss, even in the championship game, doesn;t change the mindset which has worked so well for the Bliss over the last several years.
Since my first season covering the Bliss, veteran stars Yashi Rice, Deena Fagiano and Heather Furr already had retired.  Kim Perez and Dominique Collins have announced that they are retiring.  That leaves only ChrisDell Harris and Alli Alberts (who returned after a one year hiatus) as the Veterans remaining from 2013.
Harris ranked third on the team in rushing, behind QB Caldwell and Javell Thompson.  The Ferrari has been an elite player throughout her career, but might this have been her last game?
I'm sure Coach Hac is already working on next season.  With or without Harris, the Bliss will be prepared.  That's the Hac way.  That's the Bliss way.
While the game may have been a disappointment, the Bliss has no reason to hang their heads.  They have been the elite team in the LFL for years and despite the loss, they will go into next season as one of the favorites again.
Congratulations to Coach Hac and the Bliss.  You've done Chicago proud once again!

Boys of Summer 2017

The "Boys of Summer" started in 2001.  Jim, Jason, Chuck and I went to Cleveland, OH for the weekend to watch the Indians play the Anaheim Angels.  The Indians won 4-2 to start a great win streak for us and an even better trip experience which has lasted 17 years and counting.
Over the years, we have added Cuzz Gekas (2003) and Jason Fleigel (2007).  We have seen 28 teams in 27 ballparks.  We have included a few extra activities (white water rafting, the Baseball Hall of Fame, ziplining and more).  We visited other areas (Las Vegas, Washington D.C., LaJolla (CA) and others).  We have yet to see home games of the Atlanta Braves, Houston Astros, Texas Rangers, Los Angeles Angels, Seattle Mariners, Colorado Rockies and Washington Nationals.
Cuzz has missed the last couple, but is always welcome to return.  In 2015, we combined the Boys trip with Matt Parker's bachelor party in Las Vegas, which included Louie, Scott Parker and several others.
In 2001, we had no idea this experience would last 17 years.  I hoped for a few more, but 17 trips was more than I could have imagined at the time.
I love these trips and these guys.  I soak in the experience every time, knowing it might be the last trip.  I'm even at peace if the trip ends.  I feel blessed to have been on 17 trips and I know it won't last forever.
For now, I am just happy to have 2017 in the books.  It was a bit of a struggle and we ended up just "traveling" to see the Chicago White Sox.  Despite the lack of a "trip," we enjoyed the ride down to Guaranteed Rate Field, the game, the park and the meal after the game.  Most of all, I enjoyed spending a relxing and laughter-filled day with my friends.

On the Beat at HeroTV With Carley Cooprider

The fifth episode of our HeroTV show is airing on Comcast and is also available on our HeroTV YouTube channel.  You can find that episode at HeroTV 2017: Episode 5 Carley Cooprider.
Carley is a very special you lady.  She talks candidly about her childhood, her time as a ref in pro wrestling, her new career path as a nurse, her battle with Lyme Disease and more.
Our paths had crossed prior to this interview, but I never really knew Carley until PL Myers and I interviewed her.  Within minutes of talking to her before the interview began, I was so impressed with her composure, courage and strength.  She has overcome a lot in life and is still crushing the obstacles.  Her message is so positive, so inspirational.
After the interview, I drove home thinking about Carley and HeroTV.  PL always says HeroTV is about the everyday heroes.  Carley is a hero in every sense of the word.  She is a true unsung hero.  I hope HeroTV shines a little light on her life and accomplishments.  I hope many people are introduced to this special person.  She has a wonderful message for life.  This isn't just lip service.  She has and is living courageously and admirably.
My respect goes to Carley.  I am proud that she is a new friend I have met through HeroTV.  It's not every day that I meet a real hero.

Billy Joel At Wrigley Field 2017

I recently saw Billy Joel in concert at Wrigley Field, my third time seeing hi at this historic venue.  I wrote about this experience for Global Traveler at A Night With Billy Joel.
I have seen Billy Joel in concert over a dozen times.  I have seen him more times than all of my other concerts combined.  I don't generally like concerts, but I make the exception for Billy.
I have been a fan of Billy since the mid-1970's.  If you ask me for my favorite Billy song, I'll probably say "Vienna," but I could easily say about 10 others.  He hasn't put our new rock music in over 20 years, but his music is eternal to me.
Experiencing Billy at Wrigley is something special.  I have seen hundreds of games at Wrigley, but only Billy in concert there.  The same iconic skyline and scoreboard sit behind him on stage.  A breeze off of the lake comes in on occasion.  It is about as peaceful as a moment as I could imagine, yet it is in the middle of a concert mob.  Granted, the Billy crowd isn't exactly rowdy, but a concert is still a "scene" no matter wo is performing.
Each time I see Billy, I recall my early days of discovering him.  Each new album (or each old album) I got was a new treasure.  I also think that each time I see him might be the last time I see him.  I soak it in and commit it to memory.
I don't know how many more concerts Billy will have.  I just know that I will do my best to make sure I am at every one I can make.
Thank you Billy for giving me (and millions of others) so much joy.  I hope to see you in 2018!

Friendly Encounters: Christina Von Eerie and Mikey Wild

This is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

I first met Mikey Wild several years ago at POWW, a local wrestling organization.  He was one-half of the Threat Level Black tag team (with C.J. Idol).  They were a talented and popular team.
A lot has happened since then.  C.J. got injured and Mikey drifted in and out of POWW, while developing his "American Nightmare" persona.  In the world of pro wrestling gimmicks, the American Nightmare is a pretty cool one.
Obviously, Mikey has a lot of friends in wrestling.  One non-obvious friend though is Christina Von Eerie, a very talented wrestler who has performed for some major companies here and overseas.
I don't have the backstory on their connection, but I know they are good friends.  Earlier this year, CVE appeared at a wrestling show in the Chicago area (which may or may not have been organized by Mikey).  With a couple other wrestlers, Mikey and CVE formed the Monster Squad, a group looking to take over the company and generally cause destruction.
The partnership is an interesting one that works.  CVE has long been one of my favorites in the wrestling ring and she will draw fans.
I love the picture below.  It is just two great friends showing their sadness over parting ways, as she headed back to the west coast after the show.  It may break character a bit for both, but that's not new for Mikey at least.  It's just another facet of his character.
I look forward to seeing what these two do in the future.  Whatever lies ahead is sure to be entertaining.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #341 Selena Gomez & Olivia Wilde

This is a weekly series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebrities wearing sports jerseys.  Today, we continue to work our way alphabetically through Major League Baseball.

Selena Gomez was born in Grand Prairie, TX.  Still a young 24, Gomez is an accomplished singer, actress, fashion designer, executive producer and more.  She also appears to be a decent hitter, as she proved in a celebrity game in Kansas City.  Either way, you have to like her form.  Her Celebrity Jersey Card features the cool powder blues of the Royals.
New York City, NY native Olivia Wilde is an actress, model, producer, director, activist, and entrepreneur.  She might be best known for her role on televison's House, although her resume is quite lengthy.  Wilde took part in a celebrity game in Kansas City to earn her Celebrity Jersey Card.

Kevin Thorn at Blizzard Brawl 2015

Kevin Thorn is one of those wrestlers whose career confuses me.  I don't know why he hasn't achieved more success.
At 6'3" and 270 pounds, he has the size.  He definitely has the look.  He had an interesting character in Mordecai during part of his run in the WWE.  So why did he never really attain stardom?
Don't get me wrong.  Thorn has carved out an excellent career in wrestling.  He's won titles in several smaller promotions and he had a couple stints in the WWE.  He is still active on the wrestling scene and makes other appearances.
I just always thought he would rise higher on the wrestling chain.  He seemed to have what it takes.  This goes back to what actually causes a wrestler's level of success.
Of course, there is the possibility that Thorn likes it just the way it is.  Maybe he didn't want a big run in the WWE.  Maybe he enjoys his level of success and the life that he leads.  I can't blame him if that is the case.
Either way, Thorn is always fun at his appearances.  He'll gladly slap on a wrestling hold if so requested.  Such was the case at Blizzard Brawl 2016.  Actually, I am not even sure I asked.  He might have just done put me in a headlock for fun.
Anyway, Thorn is one of the good guys.  He's a true professional.

On the Beat At HeroTV With Emily Allard of the Chicago Bandits

I often get asked why I love the Chicago Bandits or women's softball so much.  One easy answer is Emily Allard.
Emily is a California girl who attended college and played softball at Northwestern University.  She was selected by the Chicago Bandits in the 2014 National Pro Fastpitch Draft.  The outfielder quickly played her way into the lineup and the  hearts of fans.
Midway through her third season, Emily suffered a season-ending concussion.  She worked very hard and came back strong last season, but concussion issues lingered and her season was cut short again.  Her future in softball is in question at the moment.
Emily is a huge favorite of the fans.  There are many #24 jerseys worn in the stands at every game.
Outside of playing for the Bandits, Emily is co-founder of BeTheMomentumSoftball.com.  Emily is a slap-hitter and she is teaching youngsters the skill.  Not everyone can hit a towering home run.  Emily has used her speed and her well-placed hits to become a very valuable table-setter for the home run hitters behind her.
When I joined PL Myers on HeroTV, my first suggestion for an interview was Emily.  I figured she would be a very interesting interview,, but more important, I wanted to shine the light on her and the Bandits.  These ladies deserve much more recognition than they get.
When I asked Emily, she quickly agreed and despite a busy schedule, she met us early one Sunday morning at the Ballpark.  This was typical Emily.  Why stay in and catch more sleep, when she can be out giving of herself.
I am so happy and proud of this interview, which can be found on YouTube.at HeroTV Episode 4: Emily Allard.  We talked to Emily about her path to the Bandits, her passion, the young fans, her goals, her role models, her injury issues and much more.  You can feel the commitment she has to the sport and the young fans (and even us older fans, too).
This interviews was conducted prior to her stepping away from the game because of the lingering effects of her concussion.  Unfortunately, she made that decision about 10 days later.
Getting back to my main point, Emily is a perfect example of everything I have loved about covering the Bandits and being involved in the NPF.  The dedication of the players is amazing.  They play for little pay (and deserve much more), but it isn;t about the money.  It's about the sport and the young fans.  I see that on a daily basis around the team.
Win or lose, the players put smiles on their faces and walk the long line of fans after the game.  They sign autographs, pose for pictures and engage in a bit of chat with everyone there. The Bandits won two straight league titles, yet I saw so little coverage of the team.
I have no idea if Emily will play pro ball again.  I hope she does, but I know she will be fine either way.  She has a lot going on and she will continue to make a difference no matter where her career path takes her.
I thank Emily for her time in giving us this interview and for her friendship over the last few years.  I thank the Chicago Bandits for their continued hospitality in allowing me to do what I love.  I thank PL Myers for seeing something in me to ask me to join his show.

Tristan Rogers at REWind Con

Back in the day, when General Hospital's Luke and Laura were the hottest thing on daytime television (and possibly all of television), Luke's partner in crime and hijinx was Robert Scorpio, played by Tristan Rogers.  His main run on the show ended in 1992, but he has since made a few returns to the show.
Rogers had quite a fan following, as Scorpio was a very popular character.  Scorpio often took center stage during Luke's absences.  After leaving the show in 1992, there was always a steady clamoring for his return.  Fans of GH are a loyal bunch, especially with beloved characters.
I had the pleasure of meeting Rogers at REWind Con last year.  At 70, he still looks great and capable of getting into some fun trouble on daytime television.  I am sure GH fans would love to see him return again.
REWind Con was a great concept, featuring many stars who do not usually do such conventions.  Unfortunately, it looks like REWind Con was one and done.  I think there is a huge opportunity there for someone to step in and revive the concept.
It was great meeting Rogers and the other stars who were at REWind Con.  Rogers was happily greeting his many fans and catching up with some former castmates.  It was just a really fun convention.

Cards That Never Were: Mark Fidrych Topps 1983 and '84

Cards That Never Were is a recurring series in which I create virtual trading cards for players who were missed in various sets.  It is a concept I have borrowed from far too many others to list, but I appreciate all of them.
Mark "The Bird" Fidrych was taken by the Detroit Tigers in the tenth round in the 1974 MLB draft.  He made his debut for the Tigers in 1976, going 19-9 with a league-leading ERA of 2.34.  He finished second to Jim Palmer, who went 22-13, in the Cy Young award race.
His 1977 Topps rookie card is iconic.  Fidrych is shown laughing with his curls flowing from his cap.  It is one of my favorite all-time cards.  It is simple, yet completely captures the essence of Fidrych.
Unfortunately, things would never be this good again for Fidrych as arm problems derailed his promising career.  He went 604 in 1977, 2-0 in '78, 0-3 in '79 and 2-3 in '80.  He had multiple trips to the disabled list, as well as a couple stints back in the minors.  Topps gave Fidrych cards in every set from 1977 through 1981.  His stardom and popularity probably helped him get cards despite some lean years.
Fidrych pitched all of 1981 in the minors for Detroit, going 6-3 with a 5.75 ERA.  The Tigers released him after the '81 season.  It was a sad day all around for the Tigers, their fans, Fidrych and baseball in general.
The Boston Red Sox signed him early in '82.  He pitched in AAA for Bostonb in '82 and '83, compiling a record of 8-13 with an ERA of 6.63.  That was the end of the line fo Fidrych.
I completely understand why Topps did not give Fidrych a card in either the '83 or '84 set, but I that never stops me from creating virtual cards anyway.  Fidrych never actually appeared in a big league game with the Red Sox, but if anyone deserves a little extra creative room, it is Fidrych.

John J. York at REWind Con 2016

Chicago native John J. York joined General Hospital in 1991 and has played Mac Scorpio ever since.  Mac has been one of the most popular characters throughout those years.
I had the pleasure of meeting York at REWind Con last year.  He talked to us about his lengthy run on GH.  He had a lot of great things to say about his 26+ years on the daytime drama.  Of course, he'd like more storylines, but he also likes the freedom he has to pursue other projects.
His latest project is Resolution Song, which is in post-production.  The movie centers around a young man who uses music to heal a family torn apart by tragedy.
York is one of the longest tenured actors on GH and GH is one of the last remaining daytime dramas.  The future of those type shows is questionable, but I have no doubt York will continue to have success in the acting business.
York's Scorpio is a good guy and well-liked.  From all accounts, the same can be said for York.  He's been married since 1986 and seems to have avoided the bad side of the business.
REWind Con had plenty of problems and it appears to be a one-time only event.  That's too bad, because it allowed fans to meet actors like York, who generally don't do comic con appearances.

Friendly Encounters: Gene Okerlund and Heather Owens

Friendly Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

I met Hardcore Heather Owens at Resistance Pro Wrestling, although I probably saw her at Days of the Dead prior to RPro.  I just didn't know her then.  Aside from being a talented wrester, Heather is one of the Days crew.
I have seen a lot of people (including me) ask Heather for a picture with her.  It is always cool to see that person get excited about taking a picture with another celebrity.  Such was the case when Heather met wrestling Hall of Famer Gene Okerlund.
Actually Gene looked just as happy.  Knowing Gene, he does have an eye for the ladies.  I'm sure Heather did not have to ask twice.
Both Gene and Heather are great.  Look how happy they both look in this picture.  I just love when the picture really shows happiness.  This picture is perfect.
There are five Days events every year.  I highly encourage everyone to attend one of them.  You might see Gene or another wrestling legend.  You will probably also see Heather, but look quickly, because she is usually a blur of activity making sure things run smoothly.
Mean Gene meets Hardcore Heather.  This is awesome!

Celebrity Jersey Cards #340 Caitlin Arnett & Ben Youngs

This is a weekly series in which I attempt to combine my lifelong passion for sports trading cards with my semi-professional interest in celebrities  Today, we continue working our way alphabetically through Major League Baseball.

Model and actress Caitlin Arnett is a native of Tomball, TX, but moved to San Diego, CA at 19.  None of this explains her Colorado Rockies jersey, but who cares?  The Rockies jersey never looked better than on her Celebrity Jersey Card.  Some fans actually stated that her appearance was the best part of the Rockies 2015 Spring Training.  I can't disagree.
Born in Norwich, England, Ben Youngs is an English rugby union player who plays for the Leicester Tigers and England.  At 17 years and 231 days, he became Leicester's youngest ever player used in a league match.  The rugby star earned his Celebrity Jersey Card by attending a game in Colorado.

Arn Anderson at the Motor City Comic Con 2016

Arn Anderson has had an interesting wrestling career.  He was "brought" into the "Anderson" family because he bore a resemblance to the Ole Anderson.  He enjoyed success as part of the Minnesota Wrecking Crew.
They started a loose alliance with Ric Flair, Tully Blanchard and JJ Dillon.  Soon, thanks to a fantastic promo by Arn, this group became known as the Four Horsemen.  This group is the benchmark for all wrestling stables.  There have been many attempts to duplicate them, but none will ever match their success and popularity.
Arn never attained the big championship, but he won several smaller titles and many tag team championships.  "The Enorcer" seemed happy in his role.
Cuzz and I met Arn at the Motor City Comic Con 2016.  We were the first people at his booth and he immediately instructed us to "put up the four."  As silly as it might sound, I got chills.  Arn is one of the very best never to have won major heavyweight titles.
Arn was the last of the main Four Horsemen that I have met.  I can now take him off my "Most Wanted" list.  Thank you MCCCC and thanks to Arn, too!

Drea Damara at Wizard World Chicago 2015

Author Dream Damara is a native of Illinois.  She began writing poetry at an early age and was published by the time she was 19.  After a stint in the Army, she returned home and began working on fulfilling her writing dream.
In 2015, The Weeping Books Of Blinney Lane was published.  It is best described as a crossover fantasy.  The story features bookshop owner Sarah, who experiences odd happenings daily in her store.  Things get even more complicated when her nephew comes to live with her.  Will he discover the Curse of Blinney Lane?  How will his presence affect things?  The answers unfold in this gripping novel.
It was an excellent first novel and her subsequent efforts have proven that she has the writing chops.  Damara's upbringing, time in the Army, poetic beginnings and more really shape her writing, creating an interesting perspective.
Among her projects is In Creeps the Night, a creepy collection of spooky tales.  Damara contributed The Blessing to the mix.
I had the pleasure of meeting her at Wizard World a couple years back.  I always look forward to discovering new writers at Wizard World.  I encourage all to discover Damara for yourselves.  You can start at DreaDamara.com.

Kato Kaelin at Wizard World Chicago 2017 (and Madison 2017!)

At Wizard World Chicago 2017, the Celebrity Host was Kato Kaelin.  I wrote about the whole experience on Patch.com at On the Beat at Wizard World Chicago 2017.  In short, Kato stole the show with his banter and bits all weekend.
You could not have expected what you got from Kato.  He was engaging, funny, informative and everything you'd want in any host or ambassador.  It was much more than I figured it would be.
I have seen "Celebrity Hosts" of all sorts in the past and Kato far succeeded all that I can remember.  The guy worked it all weekend.  He was energetic, positive and fun without being overbearing, sugary or crazy wild.
Next Friday through Sunday (September 22-24), Wizard World is descending on Madison, WI and Kato is scheduled to be there!  I previewed this event in my debut on the Madison Patch at Wizard World is Coming to Madison!
There will be the usual array of celebrities (how about the legendary Stan Lee of Marvel Comics?)   There will also be the usual vast array of creative folks (How about Victor Dandridge, Guy Gilchrist, Genese Davis, Tom Cook and more?).  Of course, there will also be vendors, cosplayers, panels, Q&A's and much more.  It is a pop culture extravaganza and I always have a blast.
I'm not the only one having a blast either.  Thousands of fans joined me in the fun.  Besides working it, I am certain Kato also had a blast.  I've communicated with him since then and he confirmed this, along with his desire to make return appearances.  This is great news for Wizard World and the fans.the fine people behind
Just when I thought Wizard World could not get better, in came Kato.  Congrats to Wizard World for thinking a bit out of the box and bringing in Kato.  Thanks to Wizard World and Kato for not making this a shallow figurehead thing.  Kato was the real deal and he's coming to Madison!

Cards That Never Were: Tom Grieve Topps 1980

Cards That Never Were is a recurring series in which I create virtual trading cards for players who were missed in various sets.  It is a concept I have borrowed from too many to mention, but I appreciate all of them.
The Wshington Senators selected outfielder Tom Grieve in the first round (6th overall) in the 1966 MLB draft.  He made his MLB debut in 1970, but spent 1971 in the minors.  He returned to the majors in 1972 with the Texas Rangers (who had moved from DC).  He played with the Rangers through the 1977 season, after which he was part of a huge four-team trade that sent him to the New York Mets.  After the 1978 season, he was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals.  After only nine games with the Cardinals, he was released.  In late May, he signed with the Rangers, but never made it back to the majors.
Topps gave cards to Grieve in every set from 1971 through 1979.  Being that he spent most of 1979 in the minors, I understand why Topps did not give him a card in the '80 set.  Still, I was a fan of Grieve's and wanted to give him a "career capper" card.  Technically, this card should show him back with the Rangers, but I always liked seeing players have cards with every team for which they played.  Therefore, I gave Grieve a Cardinals 1980 card.
On one side note, Grieve was a teammate of our old friend Rick Stelmaszek on a couple different minor league teams and the 1973 Rangers.
On another side note, his son Ben was a first round draft pick (2nd overall) of the Oakland A's in 1994.  His other son Tim was a draft choice of the Kansas City Royals in the 23rd round in 1994.  Ben went on to a nine year MLB career, while Tim never made it to the majors.

Meeting Yashi Rice's Big Brother Simeon Rice

Simeon Rice starred on defense for the Mount Carmel Caravan.  Because he is 9 years younger than me, we obviously did not go to school together.  I did follow his career from the beginning though.
It has been quite a career, too.  After MC, he went on to a stellar career at the University of Illinois.  Then, the Arizona Cardinals selected him with the 3rd pick in the 1996 NFL draft.
He made an immediate impact in the NFL and was named the AP NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year.  He went on to play in 3 Pro Bowls and he won a Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Since leaving football, he has been active in the entertainment industry.  He started his own record label and his first "client" was Yashi Rice, his sister and a star for the Chicago Bliss of the Legends Football League.
During my time covering the Bliss, I had the pleasure of meeting my fellow MC alum.  I recognized him at a game.  I didn't want to draw too much attention to him, but I did get a picture with him and my bud Tommy Else.  I couldn't pass up this photo op.
Meeting Simeon was an unexpected, but pleasant surprise stemming from my association with the Bliss.  I talked a bit to him, but I have actually talked to Yashi a lot more.  Simeon was a stud on the field and so was Yashi.  It was cool watching Simeon succeed from afar, but it was just as thrilling watching Yashi tear up her opponents from my close viewpoint.
They are quite a formidable sibling duo.  The best part is that Simeon was very nice in our one meeting and Yashi was always very sweet and funny during my time with the team.

Friendly Encounters: Brian Orakpo and Mark Bodek

Friendly Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

Once again, here is my friend Mark Bodek with another Washington DC-based celebrity.  As I have previously written, I have not had the pleasure of meeting Mark yet, but he has met a ton of celebrities.  Maybe I am not famous enough.
Mark is a good guy and a big sports fan.  He's the kind of guy you'd like to have with you at a sports event and the sports bar after it.  Of course, maybe he'd invite some of his celebrity friends, too.
Today, he is pictured with former Washington Redskins linebacker Brian Orakpo.  Mark met Orakpo during his time in DC.  After 6 seaqsons there, he has played the last 2 with the Tennessee Titans.
I joke about Mark, but I hope to meet him one day (with or without other celebrities).  A game between his Nationals and my Chicago Cubs would seem the perfect setting.  Unfortunately, I do not have a pln to go to DC this year.  Maybe Mark will venture out here for some reason and we can meet.  Either way, I'll keep following his exploits as he cheers for his teams and he meets more celebrities.

Cards That Never Were: Eddie Fisher Topps 1973

This is a recurring series in which I created cards for players who were missed in various sets over the years.  It is a concept I have borrowed from far too many others to list, but I appreciate all of them.
Pitcher Eddie Fisher made his MLB debut in 1959 with the San Francisco Giants.  After 3 seasons (33 appearances), he was traded to the Chicago White Sox, where he pitched for the next 4+ seasons.  In 1965, he lead the league in appearances and games finished.
In 1966, he again lead the league in appearances, but they were split between the Sox and the Baltimore Orioles to whom he got traded midseason.  He stayed in Baltimore for a season and a half, before being dealt to the Cleveland Indians.  After a season in Cleveland, he was on the move again, landing with the California Angels, where he stayed for two plus seasons, before he was traded back to the White Sox in mid-1972.  Fisher finished his career with St. Louis, after they purchased his contract from the Sox in mid-1973.
As far as cards go, Fisher was represented in every Topps set from 1960 through 1973, except 1962, after appearing in 15 games in 1961.  This was odd, because he got a card in 1961 after only 3 appearances in 1960.  The 1962 season would be his breakout year, too.
Fisher did not get a card in the 1974 set, despite having 32 total appearances (between the Sox and Cardinals).  The Cardinals released him in October, which probably sealed his fate for the 1974 Topps set.
I don't let things like that deter me, especially when it concerns Chicago players of my youth.  In this case, I had to put a former Chicago player in another uniform, which is never fun, but it is necessary at times.
This Eddie Fisher never married Elizabeth Taylor (I am sure he heard that joke hundreds of times), but he did have a respectable 15 year career, going 85-70 with 82 saves.  Now, he also has a 1974 Topps card.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #339 Richard Petty & Bobby Labonte

This is a weekly series in which I attempt to combine my lifelong passion for sports trading cards with my semi-professional interest in celebrities  Today, we continue working our way alphabetically through Major League Baseball.

Richard Petty has been around cars all of his life.  He's a true legend and larger than life.  I have no idea how the #43 relates, but I'll say it is for Jack Billingham.  Petty loses points for wearing a jersey over a regular shirt, but he gains points for that hat.  It all makles for an interesting Celebrity Jersey Card.

Not quite on Petty's level, Bobby Labonte is also a legend in auto racing.  He's only been racing some sort of cars for about 47 years though.  A native of Texas, I am assuming his Celebrity Jersey Card photo comes from some promotional event at some race in Cincinnati.

Alloy Ash at Motor City Comic Con 2016

Detroit-area native Alloy Ash loved attending Motor City Comic Con as a fan.  Little did she realize that just a few years later, she would be attending as one of the celebrity guests.
Ash is a model, television personality, comics lover, welder and more.  I'm not exactly sure how welder fits in with the rest of her resume, but she is a unique person and it works for her.
I had the pleasure of interviewing Ash at the MCCC 2013.  We talked about her tattoos, her modeling and her projects.  That interview can be found at On the Beat With Alloy Ash.
I can't believe it has been 4 years since I have seen her.  As a local success story, she was tremendously popular at MCCCC.  She still cleared a few minutes to talk to us and I always appreciate that, but she went above and beyond in our communication to set up the interview.
Ash was so very sweet and funny.  She's confident and poised, while having a quiet shyness.  You instantly like her.
It's good to see Ash succeeding.  She's appeared on a handful of television shows, while continuing to model for magazines, photo shoots and more.  She's still young and her career is only going to get better.
You can find more info on her at AllyAsh.com.  Check out her site, including many model shots, videos, her appearance calendar and more.

Cards That Never Were: Bill Hayes Topps 1981

Cards That Never Were is a recurring series in which I create virtual cards for players who were missed in various sets.  It is a concept I have borrowed from too many to list, but I appreciate all of them.
In 1980, the Chicago Cubs used five players at catcher.  The most games were started by Tim Blackwell (93) and Barry Foote (52).  Mike O'Berry started 15 games and Bill Hayes started 2.  Cliff Johnson did not get any starts behind the plate, but he saw some catching action in one game.  Blackwell and Foote had cards in the Topps 1981 set.  Johnson also had a card, but was listed at 1st Base, where he started 44 games.
Hayes appeared in one game for the 1981 Cubs and did not get a Topps card in 1982.
I decided to fill in the missing card in the 1981 set.  For Hayes, his one 1981 game (with no plate appearances) and lack of good pictures, helped me decide not to try a 1982 card (yet).

Too Cold Scorpio at Heroes and Legends of Pro Wrestling VI

Charles Scaggs has been wrestling since 1985.  His biggest success has come as 2 Cold Scorpio, but he also had a memorable run as Flash Funk in the WWE.
Scaggs has won many titles during his lengthy career, including the WCW tag titles with Marcus Bagwell.  He has wrestled all over the world.
His career is one of the ones that confuses me a bit.  While he didn't have a huge build, he had decent size and excellent skills.  He showed a lot of personality and charisma, especially during his days as Flash.
I often wonder why certain wrestlers don't achieve more success or even popularity.  What is the difference-maker?  To me, Scaggs has all it takes to be a solid upper midcard wrestler in the WWE.  On the other hand, maybe he just is where he wants to be.  It's hard to tell.
I do know that Scaggs was awesome when Jason and I met him at Heroes and Legends in Fort Wayne, Indiana.  He was just one of the many wrestling stars at Heroes and Legends.
The next Heroes and Legends event is on November 11 and you can get info at HeroesandLegendsWrestling.com.  Scaggs (2 Cold Scorpio) is slated to challenge our old friend Sugar Dunkerton for the H&L Cruiserweight title.  That should be a great match, possibly the match of the night.

John Kapelos at REWind Con 2016

I was excited to meet John Kapelos at REWind Con.  It was even better getting an interview with him.  My interview with him can be found at On the Beat With John Kapelos.
During the interview, he talked a bit about working with Tom Hanks and Jackie Gleason in Nothing in Common.  He also discussed a couple of his current projects.I had a lot of fun with Kapelos before, during and after the interview.  It was one of the best overall interview experiences I have had.
Moments like these are what keeps me interested in doing this.  Kapelos didn't have to talk to me, but he did and he went above and beyond.  I was already a fan, but I became an even bigger one after talking with him.
I haven't seen him do any other conventions, but he'd be perfect.  His resume is lengthy and he has been involved in many great films, including three films of John Hughes.  I was really hoping he would have been at the recent Motor City Comic Con, because they had Anthony Michael Hall and Kelly LeBrock.  It would have been great to reunite him with his Weird Science castmates.
I'm now on the lookout for his future appearances.  Hopefully, he'll pop up somewhere and I'll be there.

Friendly Encounters: Shelby and Jim Turnier

This is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

Once again, I am featuring a Chicago Bandit with a fan, who happens to be her dad.  Proud Pop Jim Turnier was often seen at the ballpark in Rosemont.
Shelby is a fine young pitcher, who starred for the University of Central Florida before being drafted by the Chicago Bandits in the 2016 National Pro Fastpitch draft.  In her rookie season, she went 5-4 with a 3.69 ERA.  She shined in the playoffs, pitching 10 innings of scoreless ball.
In 2017, Shelby's stats were a bit deceiving.  She went 2-6 with 2 saves, but an ERA of 3.99.  She had 52 strike outs in 61.1 innings pitched.  In other words, she pitched better than her record would indicate.
I have high hopes for the future of this young pitcher.  She has the talent and the mindset to do great things in the NPF.  I look forward to watching her develop.
Her father has seen her develop from birth and is obviously very proud of her.  It's always fun seeing parents at the ball games.  These players deserve the love and support from all the fans, not just their family, but the families are a huge source of strength for them.
I look forward to seeing Shelby pitch again next season.  I also look forward to seeing Jim Turnier at the ballpark next season.

Happy Birthday Matt

Today is Matt Parker's birthday.  I shall celebrate Big Money's day.
Matt and I have met a ton of celebrities together, one of the most famous being Jake "The Snake" Roberts.  Meeting Roberts was memorable enough, but meeting him with my nephew was one of those really surreal moments.
I remember seeing Roberts for the first time on WWF television before Matt was born.  Back then, I never imagined I would one day be talking to him.  I also never imagined meeting him with my nephew.  At the time of the picture, Matt was actually older than I was when I first saw Roberts on tv.
Today isn't about Roberts, but he does represent so many good times with Matt.  Of course, we have had lots of great times without celebrities, too.
Matt has grown into a great young adult.  He is now a married man with a little one on the way.  I am so happy for him and Erin.  I wish them a lifetime of happiness.
I am sure Matt and Erin are celebrating today.  In Matt's honor, I will raise a icy cold Coke and wish him the best from afar.
Happy birthday, Big Money.  I love ya, big guy!

Celebrity Jersey Cards #338 Ted Danson & Raul Julia

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a weekly series in which I create virtual trading cards for jersey-clad celebrities.  Today, we continue working our way alphabetically through Major League Baseball.

Although he was born in San Diego, CA, actor Ted Danson will forever be linked with the Boston Red Sox, because of his popular role as Sam Malone on tv's Cheers.  Danson gets extra points for wearing a full uniform, including a jacket, on his Celebrity Jersey Card.  He gets more points for being in the dugout and for the background appearance of former co-star Rhea Perlman.  Most trivia buffs know that the picture of "Sam Malone" behind the bar at Cheers was of former pitcher Jim Lonborg.
Actor Raul Julia was born in Puerto Rico.  His many roles include a stint on Sesame Street, as well as appearances in two film adaptations of The Addams Family.  It was his role in Trading Hearts that landed him on a Celebrity Jersey Card.

Tara Reid at Motor City Comic Con 2016

Tara Reid has been acting for over 35 years.  She doesn't look old enough for that to be possible, but it is.  She started acting in commercials at a very young age.
She has starred in such hits as The Big Lebowski, American Pie, Urban Legend and many more.  She has several projects in various stages of production.  You'll be seeing a lot of her on television and in movies.
I was fortunate enough to meet Reid at the Motor City Comic Con last year.  She looked fantastic.  Up close, she is as cute as can be.  Better than that, she was very nice.
We talked for several minutes about her role on Child's Play, an old game show from her youth.  She was surprised I knew that.  I do my homework!  (Translation: I spend a lot of time watching The Game Show Network.)
Reid had a long line of fans.  Many were looking to get her to sign stuff from American Pie and Sharnado.  Of course, I asked and of course, she did not have any 8x10's from Child's Play.  How cool would that have been though?!
