The Crescent City Saint

Michael Bradley is another friend I met through Resistance Pro Wrestling. Michael filled many roles at RPro, including event security and fledgling wrestler.
Nicknamed "The Crescent City Saint," MB really wanted to wrestle and actually did get into a couple matches at RPro. Unfortunately for him, it didn't really work out for him in RPro, but he also did wrestle a bit elsewhere.
A big guy, Mike was very athletic. He first caught my eye doing a kip up. That's basically rocking/jumping up from a prone position. It's a pretty impressive move for anyone, especially a man of his size.
He was also a big fan of comic cons and I met him at many over the years. He usually woked security at the cons and then roamed the floor as a fan when he was off duty. It was always good seeing Big Mike.
MB was a big family man, With his wife and two cute daughters, Team Bradley was a heartwarming site always. It was sad to see the Bradley family move to New Orleans (the Crescent City), but I was happy for them.
Team Bradley is doing well in New Orleans. They are missed in Chicago, but we all wish them well. Hopefully someday our paths will cross again.

Matt Peppler at Wizard World St. Louis 2017

Matt Peppler is an illustrator and graphic designer.  On his twitter page, Matt states that he loves horror and hates Jackson Pollock.  He's a frequent guest at Wizard World, which is where I met him.
Some of Matt's creations are his twists on horror movie posters.  One of my favorites of his is his version of The Exorcist.  It is one of my all-time favorite movies and Matt does a great job with his creation.
Matt's works looked interesting and distinct.  I learned that he uses traditional methods, coupled with digital media.  He starts each piece by using Sharpies.  Sharpies!  I love that!  The next step involves PhotoShop.  It's amazing.  Sharpies and PhotoShop to create such beautiful pieces.  Well, Sharpies, PhotoShop, a lot of talent and a creative mind all work together.
You should head over to Matt Peppler on Etsy to see and purchase some of his awesome creations.  You can also follow Matt on twitter.  You can also check WizardWorld.com for a listing of their shows (the next one being in Portland February 22-24) and their many talented guests, including artists such as Matt.

ABC7's Cheryl Burton at Chicago Auto Show 2018

The Chicago Auto Show is coming to McCormick Place February 9-18. Along with all of the cool vehicle stuff, there will be plenty of local celebrities. Looking forward to the show, I recall some of the fun times last year.
ABC7 had a big presence at last year's CAS. Many of the newscasters made appearances at the show, including Cheryl Burton.
A native of Chicago and grad of the University of Illinois, Burton made her television debut on Romper Room. She also appeared on Star Search and was a cheerleader for the Chicago Bears.
Burton's broadcasting career began in 1989 on WGN-TV. She joined WLS-TV in 1992 and has been there ever since. Currently, Burton co-anchors the 10 pm newscast alongside Alan Krashesky. Burton replaced the retiring Kathy Brock in June of 2018.
Burton was extremely fun at last year's CAS. It probably starts with her awesome pants. I made sure to have the pants visible in the picture I took with Burton. Actually, I had already taken a picture with Burton and fellow newscaster Liz Nagy, but I asked Burton for a solo full body one to show off her pants. She was very gracious and we had a fun chat about the pants.
Burton looked fantastic up close. She's not just a pretty face though. She received her B.S. in Psychology and Biology from the U of I.
Go to ChicagoAutoShow.com for more info. You can also follow the Chicago Auto Show on Facebook and the Chicago Auto Show on twitter for updates, scheduling and more info. You can follow Burton at @BurtonABC7 on twitter.

Friend Encounters; Wayne Larravee and Mike Pankow

Friend Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

I have known Mike Pankow for several years. Mike is a legit journalist, having worked for several media outlets through the years. Currently, he is a sports copy editor at the Chicago Tribune and a writer/copy editor at UIC Alumni magazine.
As if that is not enough to keep him busy, Mike started Windy City Slam, a website covering wrestling locally and worldwide. Last year, I had the pleasure of helping Mike with a few wrestler interviews at Wizard World. Mike is a great guy and I was happy to contribute to Windy City Slam.
Anyone can have a website, but running a successful website is a big challenge. There are a lot of wrestling sites out there, but not many are different or interesting enough to make me want to return. Mike's early work with Windy City Slam shows great hope for the site's future.
Mike obviously has a passion for wrestling. He is hardworking, dedicated and focused on making Windy City Slam a success. I think he'll do well and I hope to join him for future ventures.
At a recent UIC basketball game, Mike met broadcasting legend Wayne Larravee. Actually, I see this as two media legends.
Larravee is beloved by Chicago fans for all of his work, especially his time with the Chicago Bears. Despite moving to Wisconsin, Larravee will always hold a special place in Chicagoans' hearts. We hated seeing him leave here, but he went where his heart is and we can respect that.
I highly encourage anyone, especially wrestling fans, to check out WindyCitySlam.com. Despite it still being in the early stages, Windy City Slam has a lot of content and it is growing bigger and better.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #411 Manny Pacquiao & Deion Sanders

This is a weekly series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebrities wearing sports jerseys.

Born in the Phillipines, Manny Pacquiao became a champion boxer. Pacquiao officially became a two sport athlete in 2009, when he played in a semi-pro basketball  league in the Phillipines. In 2014, he became the oldest player drafted in the Phillipines Basketball Association. Pacquiao is wearing Stephen Curry's #30 Golden State Warriors jersey for his Celebrity Jersey Card.
Two-sport athlete "Neon" Deion Sanders played for the Atlanta Falcons and the Atlanta Braves, among other teams in both the NFL and MLB. For his Celebrity Jersey card, Sanders wore an Atlanta Hawks jersey, for his third Atlanta team and third sport. Sanders probably could have played in the NBA, too.

ABC7's Jim Rose and Tanja Babich at Chicago Auto Show 2018

The Chicago Auto Show is coming February 9-18. While I am looking forward to the event, I am recalling some of the fun from last year's CAS.
As I have written, ABC7 Eyewitness News had a big presence at last year's CAS. Jim Rose and Tanja Babich were two of the personalities who appeared.
Rose was born in New Jersey and graduated from Rhode Island College. He came to ABC7 in 1982, just a few years after starting his career. Since then, he has become one of the most respected broadcasters in the city.
A native of Toronto, Canada, Babich graduated from Cornell University. She originally intended to interview to become an intelligence officer, but a public speaking engagement lead her to pursue broadcasting. She joined ABC7 in 2014, after working in New York for a few years.
Despite Rose being very visible on the Chicago scene, I had never met him prior to CAS. We talked a little sports, of course. Ever the humble guy, Rose Dow2nplayed the fact that he has joined the likes of the legendary sportscasters of the area, like Tim Weigel, Johnny Morris and a select few others. His 35+ year career speaks for itself though.
Rose and Babich graciously talked to a lengthy line of fans and even stayed longer than their scheduled shift. Rose, babich and everyone at ABC7 really went above and beyond at the CAS.
Go to ChicagoAutoShow.com for more info. You can also follow the Chicago Auto Show on Facebook and the Chicago Auto Show on twitter for updates, scheduling and more info. You can also follow Rose at @JimRoseABC7 on twitter and Babich at @TanjaBabichABC7 on twitter.

On The Beat With DePaul Women's Basketball

The second part of my weekend of Big East Women's basketball featured the DePaul Blue Demons. I wrote about the weekend at Big East Women's Basketball for Global Traveler. I wrote about my day at DePaul at Game Day With the DePaul Blue Demons Women's Basketball Team for Patch.com.
The Seton Hall Pirates beat the Blue Demons 84-73. DePaul got off to a good start, but were unable to keep it going. Seton Hall kept chipping away until they got the lead in the 2nd quarter and held onto the lead, despite some good DePaul rallies. The Blue Demons never gave up, but unfortunately were never able to regain their early game form.
Despite watching my alma mater lose, I really enjoyed the game, especially from my courtside seat view. In fact, I was practically at midcourt. It doesn't get much better than that.
This was my first time at Doug Bruno Court in McGrath-Phillips Arena in the Sullivan Athletic Center on the DePaul Lincoln Park campus. It's a beautiful building and is part of all of the improvements DePaul has undergone since my days there.
As I meandered around the Athletic Department, I saw the wall of DePaul basketball greats. Of course, I had to look for Barb Atsaves, sister of my longtime friend and business partner Louie. Back in the early 1980's Barb was lighting it up on the court. When she graduated, he name was all over the all-time leaderboards. Even now, despite a faster-paced game and a 3 point shot, Barb still holds some spots in the various Top Ten lists. It was cool to see Barb on the wall of legends.
Despite the loss, I have to give credit to Coach Bruno. As a seasoned veteran coach, Bruno has seen it all. He opted to do the post-game media session solo. I think it was about protecting his players, not that the press would have been too harsh. Still, Bruno was there to take all questions by himself.
Obviously frustrated with the game, Bruno quickly gave credit to Seton Hall for an excellent performance. DePaul had an off game, but Seton Hall's play affected DePaul's game. There is plenty of basketball to be played, but DePaul has to improve to join Marquette in the top tier of the Big East.
Coach Bruno made it clear that there was no magical formula. The players had to dig deep within to find answers. Although unsaid, it is gut check time for the players.
I have to applaud Bruno for his composure and professionalism. He could have put on a show, but he chose the quieter serious route, which I think is more effective, at least at this point in the season.
It was just a coincidence that I saw Marquette and DePaul host Seton Hall. I originally stated that it would be an interesting way to compare and contrast the teams. While Marquette certainly looked better against Seton Hall, I realize it is only one slice of the season. I give Marquette total credit for being the class of the Big East right now, but this loss doesn't put DePaul out of the picture. I totally expect both teams to do well the rest of the season and through the tourney. I wouldn't be surprised to see a championship game rematch either.
I thank DePaul University and Assistant Director of Athletics Communications Bob Sakamoto for the hospitality. I appreciate the time and consideration shown me and I plan on returning for more great women's basketball action.

WSCR's Mike Esposito and Steve Rosenbloom at Chicago Auto Show 2018

The Chicago Auto Show runs from February 9-18 at McCormick Place. As I look forward to this year's event, I am sharing some of my favorite moments frm last year's CAS.
Chicago's WSCR radio broadcast many of their shows from the CAS. It was a cool chance to see the broadcasters in action and to chat with them a bit during breaks.
The Score has always been a bit of a lightning rod on Chicago's radio scene. It has had controversial hosts and had undergone some changes in focus over the years. Like it or not, you have to admit discussing sports 24 hours a day, even in a sports town like Chicago, is difficult. The Score hosts do a great job of shuffling topics and trying to keep the conversations lively.
Between assignments at CAS, I often hung around the WSCR booth for some sports talk. At last year's CAS, Matt Esposito and Steve Rosenbloom were two of the Score hosts top do a show. Espo and Rosey are two of my favorite Score hosts, although neither has an everyday slot. Espo is excellent, whether as a reporter, update guy or host. He is sensible and knowledgeable. Rosey is a longtime veteran of the Chicago sports scene. He mixes fun with rational sports discussions. I think the two make a good combination, as witnessed at the CAS 2018.
Espo and Rosey drew a big crowd while broadcasting at CAS. Despite being popular and having lots of fans wanting to talk (or argue) sports with them, Espo and Rosey took a few minutes to talk with me.
Go to ChicagoAutoShow.com for more info. You can also follow the Chicago Auto Show on Facebook and the Chicago Auto Show on twitter for updates, scheduling and more info. You also follow Esposito on twitter at @Espo670 and Rosenbloom on twitter at @SteveRosenbloom.

Back "On the Beat" at Marquette

Last Friday, I returned to Marquette for my first actual game at Al McGuire Center. Previously, I had been at Marquette for Media Day. That is where I met the team and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Bill Scholl.
A graduate of Notre Dame University, Scholl spent 23 years working there in various roles. He then worked for Ball State for 3 years, before joining Marquette in 2015.
On Media Day I thanked Scholl and Assistant Director of Communications Megan O'Shea for the opportunity to cover Marquette. It is a privilege and an honor and I appreciate it greatly.
On Friday, I watched from courtside as the Marquette Golden Eagles defeated the Steon Hall Pirates 96-60. The Golden Eagles got off to an 8-0 start and never looked back. The game was never really close, but it was still an exciting game. I wrote more about the day at Big East Women's Basketball for Global Traveler and Marquette Women's Basketball Is On A Mission for the Patch.
Marquette is currently 16-3, with a perfect 7-0 conference record. Although it is early in the season, they are separating themselves from the pack. Even more impressive, they are doing this without Allazia Blockton, last season's Big East Player of the Year, who has been sidelined for several games with an injury.
On Media Day, Coach Carolyn Kieger stressed the high expectations of this team. She stated that the seniors would have to lead the way and the reserves would need to start stepping up. Every player was expected to continue to improve.
Coach Kieger's statements are being fulfilled. In Blockton's absence, Natisha Hiedeman really stepped up and was named Big East Player of the Week for her efforts. Others have also helped fill the void. This is a team effort.
The is an exciting team. They are on a mission. Having lost to DePaul in the Big East championship game, Marquette came into the season with something to prove and they are proving it. Marquette (at least right now) is definitely the team to beat.
I continue to be so impressed with the athleticism of the players. These young women are elite athletes. I have seen them practice and in play. They are also mature and classy. I cannot speak highly enough of the players.
Aside from the actual game action, the day at Marquette was a lot of fun. It was Milwaukee Public School Day and young students were most of the capacity crowd of 3,700. They were energetic and loud all game.
The students' excitement was assisted by in-game host Stephaine Crosley. A Milwaukee-native and former collegiate player at Cleveland State, Stephaine is a Program Manager for SecureFutures, a non-profit, empowering teens through financial education. She has mentored hundreds of young girls along the way. She is an asset to the community and Marquette games.
Marquette is an easy 90 minute drive from Chicago. In addition to Marquette, Milwaukee has so much to offer. It is a great way to spend a day or a weekend. I definitely will be back this season.
Once again, I thank Marquette and Megan for the hospitality and access. Although I am a DePaul alum, I will have torn loyalties if DePaul meets Marquette in the Big East tournament again, but that will be a great problem to have. I look forward to more exciting action as the season unfolds.

"It's Just A Game" and James Azrael

When I saw my bud James Azrael at the Chicago Pop Culture Con, he was promoting the HSPPA (Horror & SciFi Prop Preservation Association). The non-profit organization brings iconic screen-used props to public settings for fans to see up close in an effort to preserve filmic history for generations to come. Along those lines, there was some pretty cool stuff to see at the HSPPA booth.
James was also there to talk about "It's Just A Game," a movie he co-produced. We talked about the HSPPA, "It's Just A Game" and more in our interview at On the Beat With James Azrael at Chicago Pop Culture Con.
James described "It's Just A Game" as a paranormal horror thriller. Various promo pieces advertised it as "a twisted tale of teenage bullying, jealousy, angst, and a bizarre theatre cult intent on summoning the spirit of an ancient witch." The premise sounded like a typical thriller, but it appealed to me and I wanted to see where it went.
James was very passionate about it and I always like to support the talented folks I have met at pop cons. James is very talented and I was curious to see his latest creative endeavor.
James graciously invited me to a special screening, but I was unable to attend. He followed that by offering me a private link to a screener copy online. Of course, I eagerly accepted that and looked forward to watching the movie.
As much as I like seeing the creations of my talented friends, I also am a bit leery about actually reviewing them. What if I don't like the product? I can't lie in my writing, but I also wouldn't want to disparage my friends or their work. It could get sticky.
Fortunately, my fears quickly faded within minutes as I started watching "It's Just A Game." In fact, I messaged James and jokingly said I was annoyed because I intended on watching only a few minutes to get the basic feel, but I was sucked in and watched about half of it. Furthermore, I knew I had to set aside enough time to watch the rest in one sitting, because I knew I wouldn't want to leave it again.
I wrote a full review at Johngy's Beat Reviews "It's Just A Game" on Patch.com. Spoiler alert...I really enjoyed it!
The movie starts as 4 teenage girls are telling spooky tales. Things start to go awry when dissension arises within the group. Things go really badly when a cult is introduced into the movie. What is the connection? What happens to the girls? How does everyone respond? Is it all "just a game?"
Those questions are all answered very clearly and the suspense stays strong right through the end. As I watched the movie, my mind raced through ending scenarios. For the record, none of my thoughts were correct and I am happy about that. The ending was a surprise, but logical, too.
One of the things I enjoyed the most was the simplicity. It didn't try to be a blockbuster, over-the-top horror movie. In my review, I wrote that it employed the "less is more" theory. Subtlety is a beautiful thing if done right. It's actually even more sinister if done perfectly.
"It's Just A Game" contained some sex scenes which were actually sexy because they weren't gratuitous or extended. Some slasher scenes were done in the same minimal way. These scenes evoked more reactions than had they been over-produced moments.
The young actors did an outstanding job. Th character development was well-done and the actors did well with the progressions.
My bud James even had a small part in the movie. As cult member Brother Julius, James was more than "the big guy with a beard," as he described his role. While he wasn't a main character, he wasn't simply filler either.
"It's Just A Game" is a thoroughly enjoyable movie. I see it as a future cult classic. I can see the young actors going on to have excellent careers and I also see them having a reunion at a future horror con. I will be there if that happens, of course. Until then, I encourage everyone to check out "It's Just A Game."
Thank you to James for this opportunity. Great job all around, pal!
You can watch the "It's A Game" trailer on YouTube. You can also follow "It's Just A Game" on Facebook for more info and updates.

Friend Encounters: Lizette Salas and Jerry Milani

Friend Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

I have known Jerry Milani for many years, having met him at Wizard World. As the PR and Media manager, Jerry has been my main contact at Wizard World and he has facilitated all of my interviews and coverage, for which I am extremely grateful.
Beyond his work at Wizard World, Jerry is great guy. "The Pride of Fordham" is a big sports fan. I can even understand his New York allegiance based on his native New Yorker status. Jerry is often at sporting events as a fan or as a writer/reporter.
Recently, Jerry met Lizette Salas in New York. Turning professional in 2011, Salas is one of the top golfers on the LPGA Tour. She takes great pride in her Hispanic heritage. Jerry explored this aspect and more in his story on Salas, which can be found at LPGA Star Salas Clicks With Hispanic Fans, Marketers.
I enjoy Jerry's work in and out of Wizard World. Perhaps one day, we can team up for a joint writing project.
You can check out other stories by Jerry at Portada-Online.com. You can also check WizardWorld.com for all of the info, including locations, dates, celebrity guest lists and more for Wizard World events.

The Chicago Auto Show

I am pleased to announce I will once again be "On the Beat" at the Chicago Auto Show. The CAS runs February 9-18 in Chicago's McCormick Place. Leading up to this great event, I am sharing some highlights from last year.
What is an auto show without pretty auto models? I met Barbara Gomez and Natalie Gaedtke at some car booth. I probably should know which car maker they were representing. The purpose of the model is to attract visitors (which they did), but hopefully that visitor lingers for a while, collecting info on the vehicles. Maybe he even eventually becomes a customer at some dealership (I failed this part). In my defense, I was there as press and my job was to take pictures and post them (which I did). I am sure I mentioned the car maker in those reports. In that respect, it was a success for all involved.
I don't know if these ladies will be at CAS 2019, but plenty of models will be there and I will do my job and meet many of them. Of course, I'll also report on the vehicles, programs, special events and all else happening at the CAS 2019. If you see me there, stop me, because I am always up for an event picture with friends (or strangers).
You can follow Natalie Gaedtke on twitter. Unfortunately, I lost track of Barbara, but maybe I'll see her at CAS 2019. Go to ChicagoAutoShow.com for more info. You can also follow the Chicago Auto Show on Facebook and the Chicago Auto Show on twitter for updates, scheduling and more info.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #410 Lexi Strate & Vashtie

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a regular series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebs wearing sports jerseys.

Although just in her early 20's, Canadian Lexi Strate has been performing for many years already. The singer-song writer made a name for herself in Canada first, but is gaining worldwide popularity.  Strate enthusiastically wore a Calgary Flames jersey for her Celebrity Jersey Card.
Vashtie Kola (often "Va$htie") is a music video director, filmmaker, artist, designer, creative consultant and disc jockey. Once named #23 on Vibe's "31 Most Stylish People Under 31" list, Vashtie showed her style by wearing a New York Rangers jersey as a dress. This might be the first Celebrity Jersey Card from a red carpet event.

Ashley Riot at C2E2 2017

Born in Canada, raised in the south and residing in Chicago, Ashley Riot writes and illustrates original comics. I had the pleasure of meeting Ashley at C2E2 2017.
Ashley's portfolio includes everything from stunning solo illustrations to intricate multi-subject creations. Her work ranges from wildly imaginative to straight forward renderings. She obviously has a lot of talent, along with a lot of imagination. The end result is beautiful art. She does singular pieces, as well as sequentials. In addition to her original works from her mind, she also does commissions.
Perhaps best of all, Ashley was very sweet and cool when I met her. Her artwork and her personality are equally wonderful!
Go to AshleyRiot.com for all info and follow her @AshleyRiotArt on twitter for updates and other fun. You can also see Ashley's her work on ArtStation.
C2E2 2018 runs March 22-24 and you can go to C2E2.com for all of the info. All of the guest lineup has not been revealed yet, but I am hoping Asley will be there so I can see her latest creations.

Broadcasting With Gabe Baron at The Resistance

The Resistance ended 2018 with "Chapter IV: Silent Night, Deadly Night," another fantastic show. The Gym Nasty Boys won the tag titles, "The Southern Savior" John Skyler retained his title and several other solid matches made for a great night of wrestling. It was "all hardcore," as The Resistance had promised. Also all hardcore was the broadcasting. Usually, my "Or Else" podcast partner Tommy Else and I handle the broadcasting, but on the first night of the all hardcore direction, The Resistance co-owner Gabe Baron decided to get hardcore and join the broadcasting crew.
While I enjoy working with Tommy, calling the action alongside Gabe was a real treat. Gabe's friendship is one of the coolest things I have gotten from my association with The Resistance. Co-owner Jacques is clearly the more publicly vocal and probably more outrageous of the two, but I have seen Gabe's quick wit and biting humor. This was a chance for everyone to hear Gabe at his sharpest and he did not disappoint. I just tried not to step on his commentary.
I also tried to enjoy the experience. More than six years ago, when I first met Gabe, I never imagined this scene. I always wanted to broadcast one match, but now I have broadcast several shows. I have worked commentary with Tommy, Gabe and Zach Thompson, another of my favorites.
I know I have room to improve on my commentary and I will if I do more work with The Resistance. You can judge for yourself by watching The Resistance Chapter IV Silent Night, Deadly Night on YouTube.
The Resistance returns to Summit on February 9 and of course, it will be hardcore again. Chapter V will feature the original gangsta New Jack. Now that is hardcore. I can't wait!
Go to LiveDieResist.org or LiveDieResist on Facebook for more info on The Resistance and "Chapter V". I hope to see you there.

Ed Hearn and "Champions"

Ed Hearn was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 1978 MLB Draft. Hearn made his MLB debut with the New York Mets during their 1986 championship season. He was the primary backup to future Hall of Famer catcher Gary Carter. Unfortunately, Hearn did not play in the World Series.
Prior to the following season, Hearn was traded to the Kansas City Royals in a deal that saw future Cy Young award winner David Cone go to the Mets. Slated to be the starting catcher, Hearn's season ended after six games because of a shoulder injury. He played seven games in 1988, but that was it for his MLB career. He did play in the minors through the 1990 season, before retiring.
Sadly for Hearn, his retirement did not go as planned. In 1993, he underwent a kidney transplant. Later he had two surgeries for skin cancer and he had two more kidney transplants.
He battled depression and mood swings, Fortunately, he battled through everything and came out of it incredibly positive.
Hearn's story is very inspirational and is one of the fifteen stories featured in Champions, a book written by my old friends George Castle and John Schenk. I had the pleasure of meeting Hearn at the book launch party for Champions.
Much like his former teammate Barry Lyons, who I recently featured here, meeting Hearns was a real thrill. I had followed his career and read his book Conquering Life's Curves: Baseball, Battles & Beyond. I interviewed him for Signature Strength at the book launch and I talked informally to him, as well. I also got to wear his World Series ring.
Hearns was so fascinating. He had some great baseball stories, but more importantly he had great life stories. He was as entertaining as he was nice. It was simply a joy.
Champions is a wonderful book, filled with stories of courage and strength from fifteen athletes. Check SignatureStrength.org for more info on Champions and the great work Signature Strength does.

John Russo at Wizard World Columbus 2016

Screenwriter and film director John Russo is probably best known for the 1968 horror classic film Night of the Living Dead.Russo and his friends decided to make a movie. Russo hatched an idea about a man who discovered ghouls who ate human corpses. George Romero loved the idea. This ultimately led to the Living Dead series.
The Living Dead series remains hugely popular, but Russo has done much more besides that. He has authored many books and directed many movies.
He likes to say he is a nice guy who likes to scare people. Having met him at several conventions, I'd have to agree with that statement. At 79 years old, Russo is animated and lively, especially when discussing horror, his favorite topic. At conventions, he is the classic elder statesman. He commands respect, because of his resume, but also because of his nature. He connects earlier horror with modern day horror and he still has the pulse of the industry.
Russo is a huge part of one of the most iconic film series and he has earned his place in horror history. It was a pleasure and an honor meeting and talking to him.
Check out TheJohnRusso.com for more info and updates on this talented man. You can also follow John Russo on Facebook and John Russo on twitter.
The next Wizard World is scheduled for Portland February 22-24. For more info on the Portland show and all other Wizard World events, check out WizardWorld.com.

Friend Encounters: Danny Trejo and Carrie and Adolfo Dorta

Friendly Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

The new year marks a new era for Adolfo and Carrie Dorta and Days of the Dead. Prior to the last show in 2018, Adolfo announced he was amicably splitting from DotD.
I have a lot of mixed feelings about Adolfo's announcement. Obviously, I am very happy for Carrie and Adolfo and I wish them well in whatever direction their lives take. They are two of the coolest, funnest, most genuine people I have ever met.
I first met Adolfo at the first DotD in 2011 in Indianapolis. We worked a deal for me to cover and promote DotD. A year or so later, I met Carrie Gedeon, who became Adolfo's partner in DotD and more importantly in life, too. They are such a great couple.
Over the years though, it became much mote than me just covering an event. Days of the Dead became a big friend reunion for me. I looked forward to seeing my friends almost as much as I enjoyed meeting the celebrities. I attended every DotD in Indy and Chicago and the debut show in Louisville, too.
Adolfo and Carrie have always treated me well at DotD. They welcome me every year and I always look forward to seeing them, even though both are usually a blur at the events, because they are also two of the hardest-working people I know.
Rarely have I seen such a combination of passion, friendliness and fun. These two bust butt all year to make sure the events run smoothly. When any minor blip occurs at the events, these two quickly resolve any issue. Running a convention like this is an arduous, thankless task, but these two deserve much praise.
They always put the fans first, but they do occasionally get in a picture with a celebrity guest. Such was the case several years ago when they posed with Danny Trejo. On Facebook, Carrie made me laugh when she wrote, "people gave me a lot of sh!t about not texting, but I bet they never give Machete sh!t about not texting."
Days of the Dead will go on without Adolfo and Carrie. They would want it that way, too. Still, it will be a little empty without them. I'll miss their calming (yet insane) presence.
I think I will see both in the future and hopefully work with them in some capacity again.
No matter what the future brings though, I want to publicly thank them and wish them a lifetime of happiness. They weren't just my main contacts for a convention I cover. They are friends I consider to be class acts and top quality people.

Happy Birthday Scott!

Today, my brother-in-law Scott's birthday. I am sure he is celebrating somewhere warmer, but I send my birthday wishes from icy Chicago.
I remember the first time I saw Scott. It's hard to believe that was over 35 years ago (we were both just infants).
Over the years, Scott has been a friend, mentor, betting-nemesis and a brother. He invited me on his Canada fishing trip in 1995, when I was at a low point and the time up there really cleared my head. It was just one of many times Scott has helped me in one way or another. He even organized my move a couple years ago, easing my stress level immensely.
Of course, one of our favorite stories is when he tricked the usher (and Jimmy Wynn) into thinking Jimmy had agreed to meet us after his tv work at Minute Maid Park. That was inspired genius.
I haven't even mentioned his killer turkey burgers and frozen drinks. I have had far too many (but never enough) of those treats courtesy of Scott.
Happy birthday, Pork. I hope it's a great one!

Celebrity Jersey Cards #409 Dave Bolland & Troy Brouwer

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a regular series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebs wearing sports jerseys. The Chicago Bears were eliminated from the NFL playoffs, so our thoughts turn to other Chicago teams.

Ontario native Dave Bolland was drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks and eventually won 2 Stanley Cups with them. After 7 seasons with the Hawks, the center played one season with the Toronto Maple Leafs and two with the Florida Panthers, retiring after the 2015-16 season. Bolland earned a Celebrity Jersey Card while on the sidelines at a Bears game.
Born in Vancouver, Troy Brouwer was drafted by the Blackhawks and won a Stanley Cup with them. After 5 seasons with the Hawks, he has spent the next 8 seasons with 4 other teams, including the Florida Panthers for whom he still plays. Brouwer's Celebrity Jersey Card shows him seemingly catching a pass over defender Patrick Kane.

Deena Fagiano of the Chicago Bliss

A few months ago, the Chicago Bliss won another Legends Football League championship. I applaud the coaches and the players on establishing themselves as a dynasty.
Absent from the 2018 Bliss was Deena Fagiano, one of the stars from 2013, when I first started covering the team, and one of my favorites over the years. Deena was always good for an interesting interview, fun promo, bicep pose and more. On a team of characters, Deena stood out and without really trying.
She played offensive line and tight end, neither of which is a glamour position, but her value to the team was never in question. The coaches, players and fans all loved #5.
I haven't seen "The Italian Stallion" in a couple years. Since leaving the Bliss amicably, she has not been around.
I have always said the LFL needs to have a convention featuring stars of the past and present. By playing only 2 home games every season, fans don't get to see enough of the players up close.
I thank Deena for her kindness and humor over the years. She was one of a kind and I totally appreciated her then and miss her now.
You can check out all of the lady athletes of the LFL at LFLUS.com. Their 2019 season starts in April. Maybe Deena will make it back for a game!

Cards That Never Were: Lyle Blackwood Topps 1974, '75, '82, '84 & '86

Cards That Never Were is a recurring series in which I create virtual trading cards for players omitted from specific Topps sets for various reasons. It is a concept I have borrowed from too many others to list, but I appreciate all of them.
Lyle Blackwood was selected by the Denver Broncos in the 9th round of the 1973 NFL draft. He made his NFL debut with the Cincinnati Bengals in 1973. After the 1975 season, the Seattle Seahawks selected him in the Expansion Draft. He played with Seattle for one season, before joining the Baltimore Colts for 4 seasons. In 1981, he joined the Miami Dolphins. He played 6 seasons with the Dolphins, retiring after the 1986 season.
Topps issued cards for Blackwood in their sets from 1976, 1978-1980, 1983 and 1985. He also appeared (with his brother Glenn) on a "Football Brothers" card from 1982, but did not get a solo card that year.
Topps skipped Blackwood in 1974, '75, '77, '81, '82, '84 and '86. I was able to create cards for '74, '75, '82, '84 and '86. I couldn't find any decent picture for a 1977 or '81 card. I remain on the lookout for those cards, but for now, I am happy with these creations.

Victor Dandridge at Wizard World St. Louis 2017

Victor Dandridge was one of the first creators I ever met and befriended at Wizard World. Back many years ago, you could see this man was going places.
Victor was the first artist to do his take on The Johngy. He was doing cool 8 bit art and he created Johngy in 8 bit form. I love this piece.
Victor is a writer, artist, speaker, host and much more. The guy is in a constant state of movement at every con. It usually takes an effort to get him for a few minutes at Wizard World, but it is always worth it. He's such a fun, positive guy.
In addition to his own creative endeavors, Victor and Vantage Inhouse Productions is focused on today's youth and readership. Victor is a great role model.
At the last Wizard World, I learned that Victor was leaving his position with WW to focus on other things. Certainly it was an amicable departure. Victor did great work with WW, but felt he needed to do other things at this time. I wished him well and we will keep in touch. I will follow him and update all on his next great accomplishments as they happen. Until then, thank you for great work at Wizard World!
Check out Vantage Inhouse Productions for more info on Dandridge. You can also check out WizardWorld.com for more info on this great comic con. The next Wizard World is February 22-24. in Portland, OR.

Cards That Never Were: Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB's 1977 Topps

Cards That Never Were is a recurring series in which I create virtual trading cards for players missed in various sets.  It is a concept I have borrowed from far too many to list, but I appreciate all of them.

The expansion 1976 Tampa Bay Buccaneers were historically bad, finishing winless at 0-14. Because the team was so bad, it is hard to really fairly critique their quarterbacks. Combined, they threw for 1926 yards, with 9 touchdowns and 20 interceptions, with a completion percentage of 48.1%
The veteran Steve Spurrier started 12 games, with Parnell Dickerson and Terry Hanratty each starting one. Larry Lawrence didn't start any and only appeared in one game. It wasn't a shock that none of these quarterbacks returned the next season. Actually, it wasn't even a shock that none of them ever played again in the NFL.
Incidentally, Huff started 6 games in 1977, as the team went 2-12. The losing streak had reached 26 games, before Huff led them to victory against the New Orleans Saints. Huff kept the team rolling with another victory to end the season.
Unlike the 1976 QB's, Huff did return the next season, although he gave up the starting job to Doug Williams, who would hold that job for several years, finally providing stability to the offense.
Despite all of that, I felt the 1976 QB's needed to be properly represented in the 1977 Topps football set, since all were originally omitted. Somehow the folks at Topps decided to rush an airbrushed Gary Huff into the set as the quarterback for the Bucs.
The Hanratty picture isn't great, but it was the best I could find. At least the others turned out pretty good.

Friend Encounters: Dirk Benedict and Michael West

This is a weekly series featuring my friends who have met celebrities.

Michael West is an Indiana-based best-selling author. I first met Michael at Days of the Dead in Indianapolis several years ago. My first interview with Michael can be found at On the Beat With Michael West at Days of the Dead 2012. I have interviewed him a few more times, as I have followed his career. His latest book Ave Satani is available on Kindle. It "tells the story of a legendary film composer's even more legendary final score - music written for an Italian Horror film from the 1970's that was ultimately never used."
While I met Michael at his booth at Days, he is also very much a horror fan and often meets his favorites at Days events. I probably have more pictures with Michael as a fan than at his booth. Fortunately, he is very gracious in either case.
At Days in Chicago, Michael met actor Dirk Benedict, star of The A-Team television series and the original Battlestar Galactica film.. Benedict also appeared in horror flicks, like Mark of the Devil and Demon Keeper. Between his horror films and the other previously mentioned roles, Benedict has become a popular guest at comic cons.
It is always cool to see people like Michael meeting thei favorites. It's interesting to see who they want to see, but also just to see that they want to meet others. They are just regular people and they get excited about other celebrities.
At the recent Days last year, I was talking to several other authors and Michael's name was brought up each time by them, Every other author had nothing but praise for him. It was cool to hear unsolicited positive reviews for the man and the writer. I must say he deserves whatever credit he gets.
A master of the horror genre, one of Michael's most recent books is The Legacy of the Gods Book Three: Zeus’ Warriors. The third book in this series, it is a book of dark fantasy at its best.
Go to ByMichaelWest.com to get more info about this great author. You can also follow Michael West on Facebook for updates.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #408 Tameka Jacobs & Hayley Marie Norman

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a regular series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebs wearing sports jerseys. With Deal or No Deal back on the air, today I am featuring two of the most popular former briefcase models.

California native Tameka Jacobs represented the New York Giants on the special NFL Deal Or No Deal episode. The number represented her briefcase number, but for the Giants, Tiki Barber would be the most successful player to don the number.
Born in California, Hayley Marie Norman rose to fame on Deal or No Deal. She was so popular on the show that the producers wrote an entire episode around her and her signature hair style. Former Denver Broncos star running back Terrell Davis joined Norman on the set and on her Celebrity Jersey Card. Norman wore #25 of the Redskins, for her briefcase #25, but defensive back Ryan Clark is probably the best known player for the Redskins to wear the number.

Grammar Police Watch: Bollywood Salon & Spa

This is a potential new series in which I expose spelling and grammar errors I encounter. These aren't minor errors in print (like ones I make here, too). They are errors on a larger, permanent scale. They are inexcusable to me.
This series is dedicated to Roscoe Lindsey, my English teacher in high school and one of the best teachers I ever had. RIP Roscoe.
I wouldn't refer to Roscoe as "the grammar police," but I he definitely promoted using the Queen's English. In this era of social media, spelling and grammar are often sacrificed for speed and space limitations. Roscoe was not happy about this situation.
I am willing to give the benefit of the doubt for errors on social media, but other infractions have no plausible explanation. One such flub greets me every time I go for a bagel at my local deli.
A couple doors down from Kaufman's Bagels in Skokie is the Bollywood Salon & Spa. According to their neon window sign, "Gift certificate availabe."
Technically, there are two miscues on this sign. I think "gift certificate" should be plural. That is a minor, debatable error. I would let it pass if not for the bigger second error.
"Available" is misspelled. The second "l" was left out. At first, I thought it was maybe just a glitch in the neon, but upon closer look, the "l" isn't there.
How is there a spelling mistake on a neon sign? Shouldn't there be a fail safe check system to ensure proper spelling when such a sign is being made? It's not as if "available" is a strange word.
One could argue that the store owners might not be fluent in English. While that might be the case, whoever made the sign should be or should consult with someone who is.
In addition to the error annoying me, I really want to know if/when the mistake was noticed. Did the owners see it, but didn't care? If they saw it, I would assume they got a price break, but is that good enough to leave the sign as is? I don't know the cost of neon signs, but I would rather have an accurate sign. It reflects badly on the store owners (and the sign maker, too) who seemingly do not care enough to have an accurate sign.

Catching Up With the Marquette Golden Eagles

The Marquette Golden Eagles finished 2018 very strongly and are on a roll going into 2019. At 11-3 overall, they only train Butler who is 12-1. Both teams are 2-0 in conference play.
Prior to the season, on Media Day, I was fortunate to talk to all of the players. Today, I am checking in with Amani Wilborn, Selena Lott and Erika Davenport.
A senior guard from Milwaukee, Wilborn earned Milwaukee City All-City Division Co-Player of the Year honors in high school. As a sophomore at Marquette, she was named the Most Outstanding Player for Big East Tournament and last year, she made the Big East All Tournament team.
Selena Lott is a sophomore guard from East Greenbush, NY. She averaged over 20 points per game in high school. In her first year at Marquette, as a reserve, Lott played in all but one game, getting 45 steals and blocking a team-high 19 shots.
Senior forward Davenport, hails from Clarkston, MI, where she was the #4 ranked player in the state in high school. In her sophomore and junior seasons at Marquette, she was named to the All Big East second team.
Wilborn and Davenport are two of the seniors who Coach Carolyn Kieger expects to lead the team, while Lott is expected to continue stepping up .Coach Kieger made it clear that there are high expectations for the team and players. The season is still young, but those expectations are being met.
Tonight the Golden Eagles host DePaul in a rematch of last season's Big East Conference title game. Marquette lost that game. DePaul, at 10-4, is also off to a good start. This game promises to be a battle. While it is only one game in the season, both teams really want this win. DePaul wants to prove they are still the leader, while Marquette wants to show they are back stronger. At 7 pm Friday, I will tune in to Fox Sports 1 and sit back to enjoy this game.
You can check GoMarquette.com for more info on the team, including scheduling and stats. You can slo go to BigEast.com for news on the conference. Also, check back here for recurring coverage.

Ernie Sanchez x 2 at Days of the Dead Chicago 2014

A few years ago, I was pleasantly surprised at seeing my cousins Ernie and Ernie Sanchez at Days of the Dead. They were there to see their relative, author Justin Alcala.
It was great seeing these guys. I'm closer in age to father Ernie, but as a kid, my sisters and I spent more time with son Ernie. We spent a good amount of time together at our grandmother's, in a time when sitting on the porch, listening to WLS or playing catch was the way to spend a long summer day. Those were fun times.
As life goes, we all got busy and drifted apart. There was no love lost, just lives to live, jobs to work and the usual busyness. It's unfortunate and sad at times, but it happens.
Then, without prior notice, I got a call that morning saying they would be at Days of the Dead. Of course, I would hang around to see them and I would love to interview Justin. I am always on the look out for new authors.
My interview with Justin can be found at On the Beat With Justin Alcala. You can also get more info on Justin at JustinAlcala.com.
I have written many times about Days of the Dead being a big friend reunion. This time, it was actually a family reunion for me! You just never know what or who you will see at DotD, but it is always a good time.
Check out DaysoftheDead.com for info and updates on their events throughout the year around the country. The next Days is January 25-27 in Atlanta, GA.

The "Or Else" Podcast Episode 32: "The Ego" Robert Anthony

The newest episode of The "Or Else" podcast is live now and it is special for multiple reasons. Through a big assist from Dick Griffiths II, "The Ego" Robert Anthony is our guest. Ego did not make it to the Or Else studio, but we got the interview recorded on Skype and it is now available in video form.
Ego was one of my first favorite wrestlers on the independent scene and he remains one of the best I have ever seen. He is gold on the mic and in the ring. While he is technically not an RPro original (he was not there for the first show), he was the face of the company and the champ for a long stretch.
On a personal level, he was always cool with me. He was always good for an interesting interview, whether it was at at an RPro show or Wizard World Comic Con. Ego is a big fan of comics, as you could see in On the Beat with Robert Anthony at Wizard World 2014.
On an even more personal level, Ego talked to the teenage son of one of my friends, when he was having bullying issues. To keep it private, I won't mention too many details, but Ego took time to talk to this young man on a few occasions. It made a difference and we all appreciated Ego's effort. Several other members of the RPro family also volunteered to talk to this kid and many did reach out to him. I am grateful for everyone involved.
I told this story in a pre-show meeting back in the day. I felt Ego needed to be recognized. It was one example of what RPro meant to people. C Red's RPro Positive Outreach Program reached and helped hundreds of kids, but there were also lots of individual stories like mine with Ego, involving RPro talent helping others.
The picture below is from one of my favorite RPro interviews. Tommy (Eric St. Vaughn) had just won the tag titles (with Brady Pierce as Body Magic). RPro co-owner Gabe Baron joined the interview early in it, followed by Marshe Rockett and Ego. It was a bit out of character for Ego, in that he often was a bit of a loner. This interview represents Ego at his best.
This interview also represents one of the last real high points in the history of RPro. Things were going great. Everyone was happy. The vibe was electric.
Things would change drastically soon. Billy Corgan left the company and many followed. I didn't think Ego left because of Billy (like so many others did), but you can find out his reasons on the Or Else Podcast interview Tommy and I did with him.
You can listen to Episode 32 "The Ego" Robert Anthony on SoundCloud and check out all of the episodes on The "Or Else" Network main page on SoundCloud. Also, as promised, the full video version is now available on the newly created Or Else Podcast YouTube channel.
I want to thank Ego for his time, professionalism, honesty and consideration. I also want to thank him for years of entertainment. I also want to thank DGII for facilitating this interview. It was a lot of fun and seems to have opened the door for more former stars of RPro. Stay tuned, because The "Or Else" podcast is getting bigger and better.
