Ron Fitzgerald at Flashback Weekend 2018

Flashback Weekend returns to Rosemont this weekend. While I look forward to the three days of fun, I recall some of the great memories I have from previous years.
Ron Fitzgerald is an actor, gothic illusionist, host and more. He has appeared in multiple films and has performed live many times. As "Master of the Dark Realm," Fitzgerald's performances are filled with his dark and quick humor.
One of Fitzgerald's coolest projects is Dark Realm, a film from 2012. Fitzgerald co-wrote it (with Vincent Bilancio) and also starred in it. His co-star was our old friend Kaylee Williams, who we interviewed at On the Beat With Kaylee Williams.
Dark Realm is the story of a Master Illusionist whose success might be tied to evil forces. Featuring Fitzgerald's gothic illusion performances, Dark Realm is a uniquely entertaining film.
Fitzgerald has been a regular celebrity guest at Flashback Weekend and he will once again be there. His booth is always very fun and visually appealing. I always make sure to catch up with him every time, because he always has some dark project in the works.
Check FlashbackWeekend.com for more info and scheduling. Also, go to FitzgeraldRealm.com and Ron Fitzgerald's "Dark Realm" on Facebook for more info.

Tailgating With Michelle Gascoigne and Danielle Zymkowitz at the Ballpark in Rosemont

The National Pro Fastpitch championship series is in Rosemont starting August 15. As a best of five series, games will be played Thursday through Saturday, with games on Sunday and Monday if needed. While it isn't a lock yet, the Bandits should be in the series.
In addition to the great softball action, there is a huge pre-game tail gate event each day. There will be entertainment, food, fun and even some former Chicago Bandits hanging out.
Last year, I ran into Michelle Gascoigne and Danielle Zymkowitz, two of my favorite former Bandits and two of my favorite college coaches.
A star pitcher at Oklahoma, Gascoigne joined the Bandits in 2013. She was a major part of two Cowles Cup championships during her time in Rosemont. She has been the pitching coach for the Northwestern Wildcats since September 2015.
Infielder Zymkowitz starred at the University of Illinois, before joining the Chicago Bandits in 2011. Z helped the Bandits to three Cowles Cup championships before retiring. She has been an assistant coach at the University of Wisconsin for two years.
People always ask me who my favorite Bandits are. That's a really tough questions, but Michelle and Danielle are certainly in that discussion for me. They were true competitors, real ball players. They were great with the fans, too. These two young ladies were elite athletes and class individuals. I still follow them in their coaching endeavors and I see Michelle at every NU game.
I have no inside info if these two will be at any of the championship series games. My best guess is they will be there sometime. I am sure other former Bandits will also be around. It's just one more reason to get out to the games and cheer on your Bandits!
Go to ChicagoBandits.com for more info on the playoffs and the tail gate party. Also check ProFastpitch.com for more info on the league.

Friend Encounters: Rich Renteria and Eric Soderholm

Friend Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebri

Late last year, PL Myers and I interviewed former Major League Baseball player Eric Soderholm for HeroTV. Eric was at SoderWorld, the healing and wellness center his family runs in Willowbrook, IL. It was a thrill to have that experience with one of my childhood baseball heroes and a member of the 1977 Southside Hitmen! Our interview with Eric can be found on the HeroTV YouTube channel at Eric Soderholm Part 1 and Eric Soderholm Part 2.
Eric is still active on the Chicago scene. Earlier this year, he made an appearance at White Sox Fest and seemed to have a great time. He posted many pictures of himself with former teammates and current players.
He posed with current White Sox manager Rich Renteria. The two were never teammates, but the obvious connection is the Sox. While Eric played a huge part in their success of the late 1970's, Renteria is leading the Sox to success now.
Renteria was the victim of bad timing in his short tenure as manager of the Cubs and he took over a woeful Sox team (and organization in general). The teaam has continued to improve under his leadership. While I don't see them legitimately competing for a playoff spot this season (and I am glad they did not trade talent for that longshot), I see them in position for a playoff spot next season.
I love pictures like this. Baseball past and present. Two key figures for the Sox in totally different ers. This is the cool part of baseball to me.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #438 Mark-Paul Gosselaar & Jack McGee

This is a regular series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebrities wearing jerseys. Once again, we are working our way alphabetically through all of the Major League Baseball teams.

Born in Los Angeles, Mark-Paul Gosselaar became one of the breakout stars from Saved By the Bell, the popular Saturday morning television show. He has remained busy acting and has appeared to have avoided the pitfalls of teenage stardom. His Celebrity Jersey Card comes from his role on tv's Pitch, a series about the first woman pitcher in Major League Baseball. It was an interesting show and I was sad to see it not get renewed for more seasons.
Native New Yorker Jack McGee was part of a group who did background harmony in The Young Rascals. Leaving music behind, he went on to have a lengthy career as an actor. He's one of those actors you know you have seen in dozens of roles. One of those roles was as the manager of the San Diego Padres on tv's Pitch. That role enabled McGee to land on a Celebrity Jersey Card.

Cards That Never Were: Rick Stelmaszek 1974 Topps Highlights

Cards That Never Were is a recurring series in which I create virtual trading cards for players missed in various sets over the years. It is a concept I have borrowed from far too many others to list, but I appreciate all of them.
Actually, today's card was created by Lynn Phelps, probably the most prolific card creator in the Custom Baseball Cards group on Facebook. Lynn has produced hundreds of cards and also takes requests.
While I usually only like legitimate cards that should have been made, Lynn started a series that I really liked. He created "1974 Highlights" for memorable events during the 1974 baseball season. After seeing a few of his creations, I asked him to do one for Rick Stelmaszek's first hit with the Chicago Cubs.
Rick's double happened 45 years ago today. He had just been acquired on July 28 by the Cubs from the California Angels for pitcher Horacio Pina.
In his first game with the Cubs, Rick was the starting catcher and batting in the 7th slot. In the bottom of the second inning, Rick doubled off of Steve Renko of the Montreal Expos. The double drove in Jerry Morales for the Cubs first run. Unfortunately, Rick got a bit too excited and unsuccessfully tried to stretch it to a triple. The Cubs went on to lose the game 4-3.
This was Rick's only double in his career and one of his 15 hits. He had no triples, but hit one home run (off of Don Sutton).
Sadly, Rick passed away in November of 2017. He played parts of 4 seasons in the majors, but his bigger baseball legacy comes from his lengthy tenure as a coach for the Minnesota Twins. He had the third longest stint with one team (behind Nick Altrock and Manny Mota). More importantly, Rick was a great guy who gave me many wonderful memories.
I appreciate Lynn creating this card for me. If you like baseball cards (or even if you have great memories of collecting), check out the Custom Baseball Cards group on Facebook. You will love it.

Haley Outen of the 2016 Akron Racers

Today, we turn the focus on the Akron Racers, a defunct team in National Pro Fastpitch. Technically, the Racers morphed into the Cleveland Comets, but basically they are two different teams. With no disrespect to the Comets, I join many in missing the Racers.
General Manager Joey Arrieta was the woman in charge of the Racers. She is a hard-working, passionate, sweet person, who loved the Racers and softball.
I don't know exactly what happened, but after the 2017 season, the Racers were no more and the Comets had emerged. There were a few former Racers on the 2018 Comets. This year, the Comets are a mix of Team Mexico and a few others. There really is no feeling of the Racers.
The NPF continually undergoes changes and all are not for the better, but some are done for survival. There has been talks of reviving the Racers. The NPF would benefit from another team and Racers fans would be very happy. I just don't know how realistic that hope is, but if there is any hope alive, I guess it is a good thing.
A few years ago, I made a road trip to Firestone Stadium in Akron to see the Bandits play. I enjoyed that trip and looked forward to more. Unfortunately, I never got to return to Akron.
One of my favorite Racers was catcher Haley Outen. Outen signed with the Racers after an outstanding career at the University of Houston.  Outen was known for her booming home runs on her way to setting the all-time home run and rbi records at Houston.  In 2013 she was the Conference USA Player of the Year, leading the league in home runs (16), RBI's (62), slugging percentage (.731), total bases (125) and walks (41).  She also has a strong arm and excellent defensive skills.
I don't know much about Outen since she left the NPF. I know she has done some teaching and coaching. She also does private lessons.
The NPF stands at six teams, but there is always room for more. Hopefully, the Racers will return and Joey Arrieta will be back running the team she loves so much. The Racers would have a great rivalry with the Comets right from the start!
Go to NationalProFastpitch.com to learn more about the league. Check back here for my recurring coverage.

Donald Gibb at Flashback Weekend 2017

Flashback Weekend returns to Rosemont, IL August 2-4. I have had many fantastic moments at Flashback and I am recalling some of them as we head into this year's event.
I actually met actor Donald Gibb while working out at LA Fitness. I rarely recognize anyone, but my friend Jim immediately knew it was Gibb when we first saw him. We talked for several minutes, before letting him get back to his workout.
Gibb is probably best known for his role as Ogre in the Revenge of the Nerds franchise. His acting resume goes back to 1980 and includes roles on many tv sitcoms, as well as feature film roles.
Last year, I caught up with Gibb at Flashback Weekend. He remembered me as I approached him and he couldn't have been any nicer. We talked a bit about working out and the convention scene. At the time, he had not done many.
I always wonder how an actor feels about being so strongly recognized for a role, despite having such a long career. Obviously, it is always good to be remembered, but does it get tiring to talk so much about one specific role? For Gibb, it's all good. He embraces his role as Ogre and all that comes with it.
Gibb currently lives in the Chicago area. If you see a 6'4" behemoth who looks like Ogre, it very well might be Gibb!
Check FlashbackWeekend.com for more info, including scheduling and the celebrity guest list. Also, follow Flashback Weekend on Facebook for frequent updates.

Butch Patrick at Wizard World St. Louis 2017

Wizard World is coming to Chicago August 22-24. While looking forward to that great weekend, I am recalling some of the many fun times I have had over the  many years I have covered Wizard World her and in other cities.
A couple years ago, Jack and I ventured to St. Louis, MO for Wizard World. One of the celebrity guests on my list was former child actor Butch Patrick. While I have met Patrick several times, it is always fun catching up with him and hearing a couple new (or old) stories.
Patrick rose to fame on tv's The Munsters. Later, he appeared on Lidsville, a fun Saturday morning show. Like a lot of child stars back then, his career stalled a bit, but nostalgia and comic conventions have increased interest and opportunities for him. He is a very popular guest at Wizard World.
Patrick's stepfather was Ken Hunt, former Major League Baseball player. Hunt appeared on The Munsters on the episode where Herman tried out for the Dodgers. Patrick recalls that time fondly, as he does the rest of his experience on the show.
Despite the show ending over 50 years ago, it is still popular in reruns. This is one of the many reasons why Patrick is so popular at public appearances.
Patrick is doing well these days, having beaten prostate cancer. He seems to be enjoying life and fans enjoy seeing him.
The Wizard World Chicago celebrity list isn't totally revealed, but so far it is a solid lineup including Jason Momoa and Melissa Joan Hart. Go to WizardWorld.com for updated lists and more info..

Stacey McManus and the Aussie Bandits

The Chicago Bandits are in first place in the NPF (National Pro Fastpitch). Their recent homestand ended with a three game sweep of the Aussie Peppers of Minnesota, highlighted by a perfect game from Rachele Fico. My story for the Patch can be found at Chicago Bandits Take Over First Place.
The Aussie Peppers are basically Team Australia, the team hoping to represent Australia in the 2020 Olympics. Seeing the Olympic hopefuls is cool enough, but a whopping seven Peppers are former Bandits. Rachel Lack, Taylah Tsitsikronis, Ellen Roberts, Kaia Parnaby, Coley Ries, Chelsea Forkin and Stacey McManus all spent time with the Bandits. It was very nice catching up with these ladies and Bandit Nation gave them a warm welcome.
The Aussies were always special here. Their homeland folks down under gave them tremendous support. The Aussie natives also supported the Bandits and my coverage. They always showed a lot of appreciation, thanking me, complimenting me and even giving me a cute koala bear. Things like that create bonds. Those bonds stay strong even when the jerseys change.
Cindy, mother of Stacey and the women who gave me the koala, was in touch with me during the series. She helped me identify a few players in pictures and we reminisced a bit about
"old" times. I teased her a bit, seemingly forgetting to get a picture with Stacey. Of course, I got that pic and sent it to her (along with one the next game).
First place, a perfect game and reconnecting with several friends from across the world made for a wonderful weekend. Next up at home for the Bandits are games starting August 5 with the Beijing Eagles and the USSSA Pride, before the NPF championship series starts on August 15.
Go to ChicagoBandits.com for more nfo on this exciting team. Also look here for my recurring coverage.

Friendly Encounters: Robert Anthony and Noah Sanchez

Friend Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities. With Wizard World returning to Chicago August 22-25, this is a special Wizard World edition.

Several years ago, my young cousin Noah Sanchez joined the Johngy's Beat crew for some interviews at Wizard World. One of the first stars he landed was then-Resistance Pro heavyweight champ "The Ego" Robert Anthony.
I admit I am biased. Ego is one of my favorite Chicago wrestlers and I love my cousin. Besides that though, the interview was just magic. These two had great chemistry. The interview can be found at On the Beat With The Ego Robert Anthony at Wizard World. The pair recreated the fun in several other interviews which can be found on the Johngy's Beat YouTube channel.
Ego is without a doubt, one of the most talented wrestlers. I see no weaknesses in the ring or on the mic. The only criticism I have ever heard is that he can sometimes be aloof or in his own world. In the world of pro wrestling, that might not even be a bad thing.
If I am to judge Ego by my dealings with him, I have absolutely nothing bad to say. He has always been great to me and my crew.
It's not every celebrity who would give his time to a teenager for an interview. Not only did Ego give his time, he was on his game during the interviews, connecting with Noah and giving the audience a highly entertaining interview.
I greatly appreciate the time and attention Ego gave Noah at the time. It might have stemmed from Ego's background in teaching or maybe Ego is just really a nice guy, under his wrestling persona. Either way, such an effort needs to be applauded.
Noah has grown a lot since these days. He's a fine young adult and will do wonderful things in life. I know he had fun doing these interviews and we all had fun watching them.
These were good times at RPro. These were times when we were all one big family. The Ego-Nah interviews will always make me smile.
Check WizardWorld.com for all of the info on Chicago and other cities. You might even see comics fan Ego there!

Buff Is The Stuff

Marcus "Buff" Bagwell had an interesting wrestling career. He has enjoyed a lot of success, but probably not as much as he should have had.
Debuting in 1990, Bagwell went on to be a 5x tag team champ. Unfortunately, he didn't ascend to the next level of major success as a singles wrestler as many expected.
WCW was a mess during most of his time there. Some also said he created some of his own problems. In either case, when the WWE eventually bought WCW, Bagwell was one of the first wrestlers signed. His WWE stint lasted less than a month. His first match is not fondly remembered by any fan. Was it his fault or was he doomed from the start? Wrestling can be very petty and political.
Since his release from the WWE, Bagwell has wrestled on the indy scene, as well as made public appearances. I've met him many times and he has always been a great guy.
He usually has his trademark hat with him for fans to wear for pictures. It's a simple thing, but very effective. It's amazing what a gimmick can do for a celebrity at public appearances. Just having that hat might bring several more fans to his table.
Bagwell might never have been "The Man," but Buff will always be the stuff. If you see him at an appearance, you will not be disappointed.
You can follow him @MarcBuffBagwell on twitter. He's pretty active and entertaining there.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #437 Joan Jett & John Williams

This is a regular series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebrities wearing jerseys. Once again, we are working our way alphabetically through all of the Major League Baseball teams.

Born in Pennsylvania, Joan Marie Larkin rose to fame as Joan Jett. Whether fronting the Blackhearts, or the Runways or performing solo, Jett is a true Rock and Roll Hall of Famer. A longtime supporter of the Orioles, Jett even wore an Orioles jersey while sitting in the front row at Yankee Stadium in the 1980's.Jett has worn many Orioles jerseys, but this one appears to be a Manny Machado jersey. Jett earned her Celebrity Jersey Card while on the field at an Orioles game.
Native New Yorker John Williams has carved out a Hall of Fame career composing music. Perhaps best known for his work on the Star Wars franchise, earlier Williams composed music for television shows including Gilligan's Island, Lost In Space and other favorites. He has won 24 Grammy Awards, 5 Academy Awards and 4 Golden Globe Awards. Williams looks like he could be a pitching coach on his Celebrity Jersey Card.

Barb Jordan and the NPF Playoffs

Barb Jordan was an outstanding amateur, collegiate and pro softball player. Currently, she is a color analyst on National Pro Fastpitch broadcasts.
I always like seeing Barb at the ballpark. Her presence usually means it is a special game. In the NPF, nothing is more special than the upcoming championship series to be held in Rosemont starting on August 15 and continuing for a best of five series.
As a former player on all levels, Barb brings a wealth of knowledge. That might sound cliche, but it is fact with Barb. She is very "hands on" with the league and the players. Unlike other sports that bring in big names who have not been involved, Barb is the best choice to provide color commentary during broadcasts. Barb and Eric Collins provide a completely enjoyable listening experience.
Barb is also a popular figure around the park. As a long time fixture on the softball scene, everyone knows her and wants a piece of her time, including me. Fortunately, Barb is very giving and fan-friendly. She always makes time for small chats and pictures. She is a great ambassador for the sport and the league.
I expect the Bandits to face the USSSA Pride in the championship series again. I know it will be an exciting finish to what has been a really fun season.
Go to ProFastpitch.com or ChicagoBandits.com for more info. Of course, I will also provide recurring coverage right here.

John Cappelletti at The National 2017

The National Sports Collectors Convention will be held in Rosemont July 31-August 4. Once again, I will be "On the Beat" and reporting back here, on Patch.com and GlobalTravelerUSA.com.
When I was asked to cover The National in 2017, I immediately checked the sports guest list and saw John Cappelletti's name. I was a huge fan of Cappelletti's and made him my main target to meet.
Cappy was a star running back at Penn State when his younger brother Joey was diagnosed with leukemia. His special bond with Joey led to his famous, tear-filled Heisman trophy acceptance speech.
The story is beautifully told in Something For Joey, an old movie starring Marc Singer as John. It is less well-known, but every bit as heart-wrenching as Brian's Song
Everything went great at The National until it came time to meet Cappy. There was some sort of mixup in the scheduling and I missed my opportunity. Disappointed, but not deterred, I approached a staffer and plead my case. Cappy had moved onto the autograph signing portion of his day. I plead some more and the staffer said he would talk to Cappy. I figured that was a polite blow-off, but minutes later, he returned and told me Cappy would meet me after his signing session if I wanted to wait.
Would I wait? Oh certainly I would wait.
About an hour later, the staffer got me and brought me to Cappy. He didn't have much time, but I was thankful for the few minutes. Cappy appreciated my effort to see him and my interest in his entire career.
I really appreciate Cappy for taking the extra time to see me. He didn't have to do that. I also appreciate the staffer at The National for going above and beyond in making this happen. He didn't have to do that either. Of course, I also appreciate The National for granting me access and giving me a great experience, highlighted by meeting Cappelletti.
Go to NSCCShow.com to get all of the info on the 2019 National Sports Collectors Convention. You can also check here for more updates.

Mike Knezevich On The Mic

Mike Knezevich has been the voice of the Chicago Bandits since 2009. A graduate of Notre Dame, Mike has has worked solo, as well as working with several broadcasting partner, including me for a game a few years back.
I will forever be grateful for Mike allowing me to share the mic with him during a Bandits game. It was a real thrill and definitely a "bucket list" item for me.
Mike is a friendly face around the ballpark, often chatting with players and fans before and after the game. During the game, he is all business, of course. Still, although he takes his craft seriously, he does have a keen sense of humor that he sprinkles around in the broadcast. A true professional, Mike is beloved in Rosemont and everywhere else he broadcasts.
I had a chance to chat with Mike for longer than usual during a rain delay. I started by complimenting his hat. Mike looked like he was ready to go on safari, which would be cool, because he could also handle the broadcast duties on the safari. That would make for some great entertainment.
Seriously though, Mike is a great guy and an asset to the Bandits. I'd love to hear his briadcasts over the speakers while attending a Bandits game. That would be the ultimate.
Go to ChicagoBandits.com for more info on the team and Mike. Come out to a game and experience it all firsthand.

The Resistance Presents Blood Feast

Last year, The Resistance and Girl Fight presented Death Becomes Her, an 8 women death tournament. It was such a huge success, it was quickly announced there would be another tourney.
This year, we got double the fun as there was a Death Becomes Her 2, but Blood Feast, an 8 man death tournament was added on the same weekend. That's a lot of carnage for one weekend.
Making it even more exciting was Blood Feast being the first iPPV for The Resistance. Available on FITE, Blood Feast is was streamed live and is available to be viewed.
Making it even more exciting for me was me doing commentary along with The Resistance co-owner Gabe Baron. That's right. I would be broadcasting a legit iPPV event.
I took my assignment seriously and compiled some info on all eight male participants. I knew a few from their time at The Resistance, but I wanted to be fully prepared and to do a solid job. This might be my only such opportunity and I wanted to give it my best shot.
I wanted to broadcast one match for a while. I wanted the experience and I thought it would make for a good story. The timing wasn't right at first, but the chance came up when Tommy Else and I provided commentary for the last RPro event and then the first event from The Resistance. Gabe then joined the broadcasting team, sharing the mic with me for the first half of shows and with Tommy for the second parts.
Each time on mic is a learning experience. The roster for The Resistance features a lot of wrestlers and we have to learn about them on the fly sometimes. The crowd is always loud and sometimes so loud, I cannot even hear Gabe.
I never expected to be on commentary for the iPPV though. I figured that role would go to someone more famous or more experienced. Of course, when asked I jumped at the chance. I really appreciate Gabe and co-owner Jacques Baron trusting me with this role. While I would like to continue doing commentary, I would also understand if they went in another direction sometime.I'd walk away happy and grateful for the opportunities already given.
Check out LiveDieResist.org for more info and news. I encourage everyone to order Blood Feast. I will write more about Blood Feast in the future, but for now, I don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't watched it on iPPV yet.

Friend Encounters: Emily Allard, Megan Blank, Michelle Gascoigne, Sammy Marshall and Chris Bejcek

Friend Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

This is a big group Friend Encounters. It is fitting as it is right in the middle of the Chicago Bandits season.
It represents great times for my bud Chris Bejcek and also for me. Chris is surrounded by former outfielder Emily Allard, former infielder Megan Blank, former pitcher Michelle Gascoigne and former Bandits player Sammy Marshall. Now, just three years after this picture, all four ladies are either retired or playing elsewhere. That's just life in the NPF.
Emily was forced into retirement due to concussion issues. She is doing great, running BeTheMomentumSoftball.com and clinics all over.
Megan retired after last season. She has done coaching clinics and I think coachinbg somewhere is in her future.
Michelle was coaching in the collegiate ranks while playing. She is currently the pitching coach at Northwestern, who had a fantastic 2019 season. Check out the Cats at NUSports.com.
Sammy is a local athlete who starred at Western Illinois before becoming a star with the Bandits. In the last offseason, she was traded to Cleveland. It was a tough loss, Sammy is doing fine and also has a bright future in coaching.
Meanwhile, there is Chris, a music junkie. Aside from his passion for the Bandits, Chris is a big time concert goer. His musical love seems to span the spectrum. If you don't see him at a Bandits game, chances are he is at some concert.
These five represent great people I have met and befriended through the Bandits. Bandit Nation isn't just a name for the fan group. Bandit Nation is a community of people who come together for our love of softball, but who have developed friendships outside of the ballpark.
I have seen each of these ladies since their departures from the Bandits and it is like sweeing an old friend. You can't emotionally invest in the team, without being attached to the players. Likewise, they become attached to the loyal fans who have supported them.
There is still plenty of softball action left in the season. I encourage everyone to get in on the fun. Go to ChicagoBandits.com to get all of the info and scheduling.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #436 Elizabeth Dole & John Lewis

This is a regular series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebrities wearing jerseys. Once again, we are working our way alphabetically through all of the Major League Baseball teams. Today, we get political.

Elizabeth Dole was born in North Carolina. Long before marrying husband Bob in 1975, Elizabeth had been involved in politics, including campaigning for the Kennedy–Johnson presidential ticket in 1960. Doles Celebrity Jersey Card not only predates the existence of the Nationals, it precedes the origin of the franchise in Montreal.
Politician and civil rights leader John Lewis was born in Alabama. Since 1987, he has served as the U.S. Representative for Georgia's 5th congressional district. Lewis was heavily involved in many protests and marches. He suffered verbal and physical abuse for his cause, but he remained resolute. The Celebrity Jersey Card for Lewis also predates both the Washington Nationals and their predecessors the Montreal Expos.

Travel Training Tips From Joey Thurman

Several years ago, I had an idea for a Global Traveler online feature. I thought it would be interesting to have a trainer give ideas for simple exercises while travelling.
I heard about Joey Thurman, a local trainer with Morph Fitness. Joey was gracious enough to let us video his workout suggestions for travelers. That video can be found at Travel Training Tips From Joey Thurman.
At the time, Joey was on the rise, but he really has taken off recently. He has been on television, in magazines and all over the internet.
His website starts with "Joey Thurman helps celebrities and A-list business people and parents fit health and fitness into their busy lives." That was the perfect fit for GT. I got Joey early in his success.
I doubt he would have the time to do this for us now, but Joey would probably be nice enough to consider it if asked. Joey was extremely nice, inviting us into Morph Fitness and giving us the grand tour. He put a lot of thought into the exercises he demonstrated.
I knew Joey was great at what he did and I knew he would keep gaining more success and exposure, but I am happy to see him doing this well. The man has earned it. I am very happy GT was at the early end of his success, too.
Go to JoeyThurman.com for more info. Also, head over to GlobalTravelerUSA.com for all sorts of interesting bits on travel, business, technology and more.

Sherilyn Fenn at Days of the Dead Indianapolis 2019

I spent last weekend at Days of the Dead in Indianapolis. I was there when DotD debuted in Indy in 2011 and I have attended every Indy (and Chicago) show since then. I wrote more about this year's Indy show at Days of the Dead Indy 2019 for Patch.com.
Sherilyn Fenn comes from a showbiz family. Her mom is keyboard player Arlene Quatro, her aunt is musician Suzi Quatro, her grandfather was jazz musician Art Quatro and her father Leo Fenn managed several musical acts, including Suzi and Alice Cooper. Sherilyn carved out her own legacy in acting, really rising to fame with her role on Twin Peaks.
DotD invited Sherilynn to their celebrity guest lineup for a rare midwest appearance. Fans were very happy about this rare opportunity and they showed their appreciation all weekend long. Sherilynn had one of the longest lines, but she was very personable and made sure to make it special for everyone. She was a fantastic guest and nobody minded the wait!
DotD Indy was another fun-filled weekend. The Days machine will be back in action in Louisville August 30-September 1. Carmen Electra and Elvira have already been announced in what looks to be another great celebrity lineup.
Check DaysoftheDead.com for more info. As always, I will have recurring coverage here, as well.

On the Beat With Bobby Easley, Michelle Morris and Dustin Kay at Days of the Dead 2019

I spent last weekend at Days of the Dead horror convention in Indianapolis. I have met many creative folks over the years at DotD and am honored to call some of them my friends. Bobby Easley, Michelle Morris and Dustin Kay are three of those creative friends and they are creating something cool right now.
I first met all three several years ago and have seen their careers blossom over the years. We have done several interviews and I have seen several private screenings of their various projects. I am always highly entertained and impressed with their work.
It's always tricky watching the work of friends How would I give an honest opinion if I disliked the product? Fortunately, I have really, honestly liked everything I have seen from this group.
At Days of the Dead, I had the pleasure of catching up with the trio and interviewing them. They gave me the scoop on their latest project. Versiera is an H.P. Lovecraft adaptation of “The Dreams in the Witch House,” originally written and published in the 1930's. Michelle (also professionally known as Portia Chellelynn) plays Alice Gilman, the main character (changed from Walter Gilman in the original).
Just listening to Bobby, Michelle and Dustin discuss this project, you can feel the passion and excitement they have for it. They are hustlers in the best sense of that word and you cannot help but get caught up in the fervor. Based on the past and what I hear about this project, that anticipation will be rewarded once we see the finished film.
While the details were held to a minimum at this point, they assured me I will get more details as the project progresses. Bobby mentioned November as a possible time and that coincides with Days of the Dead in Chicago. I am holding them to an update interview there and will continue to bring info and updates as I get them.
Along with the talk of Versiera, the trio also briefly discussed other projects they have in the works. As I said, they are busy and we all benefit from the entertainment they provide.
Until then, enjoy this interview with Bobby, Michelle and Dustin. Keep an eye out for Versiera!

Courtney Gano and the Chicago Bandits 2019

The Chicago Bandits are 21-3 and in first place. I recapped the last week for Global Traveler at National Pro Fastpitch Chicago Bandits.
Handling first base is Courtney Gano. In 16 games, with 32 at bats, Courtney is hitting .250 with 4 rbi's, 2 runs scored and 2 stolen bases. Last season, she hit .384 in 31 games. She also has a .949 fielding percentage.
A star at the University of Washington, Courtney is in her second season in the NPF and the Bandits. Her mom was an All-American softball player for Cal Poly Pomona. She also has played with the Italian-base Softball Club Forlì.
Courtney is another fan favorite. I have seen many youngsters admire her for her play and for her glasses. Actually prescription glasses are a rarity in pro softball, but Courtney successfully wears them and is a role model for glasses-wearing youngsters.
As a kid who has worn glasses all my life, I always had a soft spot for ball players who wore glasses. As contacts became more common, glass wearers were less common. I clung to the dwindling number of bespectacled players. Courtney is that player for Bandits fans.
Of course, she has much more to offer than just her eyewear. She is extremely good with the fans. I see many Gano jerseys in the crowd.
It's been a pleasure watching Courtney develop in the league and knowing her off the field as well. She is a class act and another great ambassador for the team and the league.
Check ChicagoBandits.com for more info on Courtney and the team. Also, check here for recurring coverage.

Jackson Bostwick at PopCon Milwaukee 2017

Shazam! was one of my favorite Saturday morning television shows when I was a kid. Focusing on Captain Marvel, it ran for 28 episodes over three seasons.
Michael Gray starred as Billy Batson and Jackson Bostwick was his superhero alter ego Captain Marvel. Les Tremayne played Billy's (unnamed) mentor, who drove him around in a Winnebago, helping people along the way.
For debatable reasons, Bostwick's run with the series ended two episodes into the second season. He cites an injury, while the studo claimed he was holding out for more money. The courts eventually ruled with Bostwick.
I had the pleasure of meeting Bostwick at the PopCon Milwaukee 2017. Unlike a lot of actors, Bostwick embraced his iconic role. His run on Shazam! might have ended badly and prematurely, but he has fond memories and has gained a lot of fans because of the series.
He stated that he looked at playing Captain Marvel, like Clayton Moore viewed his role as the Lone Ranger. Both wanted the kids to be able to look up to the character. Both paid particular attention to details, knowing how critical and observant kids are. I'd say he accomplished his goal.
I haven't seen Bostwick do many conventions since PopCon Milwaukee. I was glad to catch him there, which is why I always say never to pass up such an opportunity.
You can get more info on Bostwick at JacksonBostwick.com. You can also go to PopConMilwaukee.com for more info on this event. They have not announced a date for their 2019 show, but check the site for breaking news.

Friend Encounters: Sara Moulton and Jonathan Cimaglio

Friendly Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

Here is another Friend Encounters where the celebrity is also a friend. I met both of these folks through the Chicago Bandits.
Sara Moulton had a stellar career at the University of Minnesota. She had a record of 112-50, while racking up plenty of awards, records and honors. The Bandits selected Sara with the 5th overall pick in the 2014 draft and she went on to be a big part of the Bandits winning championships in 2015 and '16.
During her time with the Bandits, Sara underwent a tremendous transformation. She adopted a healthier lifestyle and lost a lot of weight. She started running and finished a Marathon in her native Minnesota. It was inspiring to see how dedicated she was and to see her results.
Along the way, Sara opened Strike Zone Sports, a Minnesota Fastpitch Training Center. Sara and her partners offer individual and group sessions for young softball players.
Jonathan Cimaglio is a transplanted Bandits fan, who coincidentally now lives in Minnesota. Cimags is a big time autograph collector. I am sure he has Sara's autograph, among the many I saw him get at Bandits games over the years.
Sara and Cimags are two perfect examples of friendships forged through the Bandits. I have met and befriended so many players and fans. It's always a great time at the games and beyond.
Check out the Bandits at ChicagoBandits.com. Also, go to StrikeZoneSports.net for more info on Sara's training facility. Lastly, you can go to the Cimags' YouTube channel to see his many videos.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #435 Mickie James & Carmella

This is a regular series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebrities wearing jerseys. Once again, we are working our way alphabetically through all of the Major League Baseball teams.

Mickie James was born in Virginia and rose to fame in wrestling rings. She is a 6x women's champ in the WWE and a 3x women's champ in Impact Wrestling. She also is an accomplished singer, having released two albums. Part Native American of the Powhatan tribe, James was inducted into The Native American Music Awards Hall of Fame. James held her custom Mets title belt for her Celebrity Jersey Card.
Born in Tampa, FL, Leah Van Dale spent time as a cheerleader for the New England Patriots and the Los Angeles Lakers, before finding fame as Carmella in the WWE. She is a lifelong wrestling fan and idolized WWE legend Miss Elizabeth. Carmella won the Money in the Bank match in 2017 and brought her case with her for the Mets wrestling night. This is the first MitB briefcase to appear on a Celebrity Jersey Card, but it probably won't be the last.

"Ozzy" at Days of the Dead Chicago 2017

Days of the Dead is happening in Indianapolis right now.. While I am ensconced in horror-related fun there, here I look back on some of the great fun I have had there over the years.
Cosplayers are a big part of comics and horror conventions. I have seen some great costumes, many of which are elaborate and very detailed. Then there is "Ozzy."
Okay, I am just poking Ozzy. In fact,k he is not really a cosplayer. Ozzy is part of the PsychoBabble crew. (Spoiler alert: Ozzy s really comedian Bob Jay.)
Wearing a ratty wig, glasses and doing a pretty good Ozzy impression, this guy walks around Days of the Dead mingling and talking to attendees, while also nabbing cool interviews with the celebrity guests.
I have tagged along with the PsychoBabble crew and I still don't know how they do what they do. At a convention where the celebrities are there to meet fans and make money, the PsychoBabble crew manages to get some major celebrities for interviews. I would think an irreverent Ozzy imposter would not be given the time or consideration, but yet he somehow is endearing enough to draw in the celeb.
Ozzy and the crew, led by Mike Preston, are an awesome bunch. I have worked with them and have been on their cable show.
The PsychoBabblers don't usually make the trip to Indy, but there will be plenty of other fun there. Check out DaysoftheDead.com for more info.

Welcome to the Chicago Bandits Jenna Lilley

Jenna Lilley recently made her debut for the Chicago Bandits. Part of the big offseason trade, Jenna was unfortunately a bit overshadowed by the hoopla surrounding the players lost.It wasn't fair to Jenna, nor was it the proper way to welcome her to the Bandits.
Several years back, Jenna played club ball for the Beverly Bandits in Illinois. It was a dream of hers to play for the NPF Bandits. After a great collegiate career at Oregon, Jenna joined the Cleveland Comets in 2018. As a rookie, she saw limited action, but hit .275 for the Comets.
The last offseason saw Jenna get traded to the Bandits with Sammy Marshall, Emily Carosone and Shelby Turnier going to Cleveland. Bandit Nation was surprised and a bit angry about losing the players. While it wasn't a reflection on Jenna, she was caught in the storm. Wisely, Jenna steered clear of any controversy and remained a class act. Once the season started and Jenna was introduced the first time, she was warmly greeting by Bandit Nation. As her career progresses, the odd start with the Bandits will be long forgotten. Already now, it isn't even a big deal. In the end, it will be a small bump on a nice career.
Jenna looks to have a bright future. I have had the pleasure of talking to her after some games and she is a personable, dedicated athlete. She already fits in with the Bandits and is fully embraced by the fans.
The Bandits are in the middle of a 10 game homestand, which will end about halfway through the season. There is plenty of great softball action to be played and I encourage everyone to check out the Bandits and Jenna.  Go to ChicagoBandits.com for more info on the team.

Papa Shango at Days of the Dead Indianapolis 2017

Days of the Dead takes over Indianapolis tomorrow through Sunday. As I head to what promises to be another great weekend, I look back at some of the fun moments from previous years.
Jayson Maples is the man behind Heroes and Legends of Wrestling Fan Fest, a great wrestling event held several times a year in Indiana. Jayson has become one of the staples at DotD, bringing in a series of awesome wrestling legends.
At the Days event in Indy 2017, he brought in Charles Wright. Perhaps Wright is better known by one of in-ring names, including Papa Shango, Kama, Kama Mustafa, The Godfather and The Goodfather. I met Wright at a previous event, when he was in his Godfather gear. He "choked" me there and also made reference to me looking like Jay Leno, thus joining my Jay Leno Club.
At Days Indy 2017, it was a rare opportunity to meet Wright as his Papa Shango character. I could not pass up that chance. Yes, he also made the Jay Leno reference there, too.
During his WWE career, Wright won the Intercontinental title and the tag tiles (with Bull Buchanan)  He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2016.
Wright is a great example of hard work and perseverance. He mad several characters work to varying degrees of success, but each had their moments. Wright seemed to be the ultimate team player in a universe which is often self-centered. More importantly, he always seemed to be having fun, just like he did at Days.
At Days Indy 2019, wrestling guests scheduled include Kurt Angle and Sgt. Slaughter. I am sure Jayson will be there, as will a few indy wrestlers from the area.
Go to DaysoftheDead.com for more info and scheduling. Also check out HeroesandLegendsWrestling for info on those fun events.

Cards That Never Were: Rick Stelmaszek 1971 Topps

Cards That Never Were is a recurring series in which I create virtual trading cards for players missed in various sets over the years. It is a concept I have borrowed from far to many others to list, but I appreciate all of their work.
I usually only feature cards I have created, but I make an exception with today's card creation. It was done by David Jenkins of the Facebook group Custom Baseball Cards. David is one of the many talented folks who make hundreds of cool "missing" cards.
Drafted by the Washington Senators, Rick Stelmaszek made his major league debut in 1971. Stelmaszek, along with Dick Such and Gene Martin, appeared on a 1970 Topps Senators Rookie Stars card. He did not have a card in 1971 or 1972. He reappeared, this time with Sergio Robles and George Pena, on a 1973 Topps Rookie Catchers card. He had solo (although airbushed) cards in 1974 and 1975.
Since he already had a 1970 rookie card, a 1971 solo card would not have been out of the realm of possibilities. Besides, I really like the look of this card creation. Maybe David or someone else from the FB group will created a 1972 Topps card for Stelmaszek.

Bill Philputt at Days of the Dead 2018

Days of the Dead Indianapolis starts tomorrow and runs through the weekend. As I prepare to make the short trek, I am highlighting some of my favorite moments from past DotD events.
As I have previously written, 2019 is a bit of a new era for DotD. Started in 2011, this convention has been one of my yearly staples. I made a lot of great friends within the management crew. Late last year, several of those friends announced an amicable break from the convention.
That leads me to Bill Philputt. Although one of the original members of the DotD team, I have never dealt much with Bill. I knew of his part in the success of the convention and I always had friendly interactions with him, but that was about it for whatever reason and with certainly no disrespect to him.
My partnership with DotD started with Adolfo Dorta, another of the original promoters. Adolfo remained my main contact until the announcement last year.
Fortunately for me, Bill was very open to allowing me to continue doing my work at the conventions. While there have already been a few DotD events this year, Indianapolis will be my first and I am completely excited about it.
Bill has a lot of work ahead of him. The first 8 years of DotD were awesome events. I have every confidence that Bill and the new crew can keep it all going strong. So far, the reports are excellent and Indy should be another excellent time.
I wish Bill and the crew a lot of luck. I will do whatever I can to help make this a success.
Check DaysoftheDead.com for more info. Also, check back here as I have recurring coverage of DotD all year.

Friend Encounters: Coolio and Troy Babbs

Friend Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities. Headng into Days of the Dead Indy July 5-7, I am presenting a special Days of the Dead edition of Friendly Encounters.

I met Troy Babbs at Days of the Dead several years ago. Troy is one of the nicest and most genuine people you will ever meet. He has joined the Johngy's Beat crew a few times while we covered various events. He is always ready to go above and beyond the call of duty.
Troy had offered to help me at one convention a couple years ago. (Keep in mind, this isn't a contractually binding situation.) For whatever reason, his main reasons for wanting to attend the particular convention changed and he didn't have a need to be there. He didn't tell me this until after the day eneded, but he only came because he promised me he would help. There aren't many people who are that solid and strong with their word.
At the last Days of the Dead in 2018, Troy met Coolio. This picture is classic. Troy could actually borrow the "coolio" moniker, because he is very cool. Seriously, Troy has fun wherever and with whomever is around him. Maybe Coolio should post about being with Troy!
Sadly, Troy has moved on from DotD. He is still busy on the convention scene and other places. He last joined the Johngy's Beat crew at C2E2 in March. While I miss my friend st DotD, I know I will see him elsewhere and it i always good.
Go to DaysoftheDead.com for more info on the upcoming show and all other events. You can also go to CoolioWorld.com to learn more about him. Unfortunately Troy does not have a website, but he should.
