Sara Richard at New York Comic Con 2021

New York Comic Con is quickly approaching. Running October 6-10, it is one of the biggest comic cons in the country. I will be back "On the Beat" meeting celebrities and creators.

Artist Sara Richard is a regular at NYCC. My interview with Sara from NYCC 2021 is at On the Beat With Sara Richard.

I first met Sara more than a decade ago and quickly fell in love with her art. Over the years, I have watched her gain more success and popularity. She has continue making fabulous art, as well as collaborating on several really cool books. It seems Sara always has something new coming out and more stuff in the works.

It's always an interesting interview with Sara because she has so much happening. Plus, she does really unique things, like grave stone cleaning. Sara's talents and passions go beyond her artwork.

I loved Sara's work so much, I asked her do do her version of the Johngy character. She was the first artist I asked and I loved her work so much, it inspired me to ask others. I now have a little Johngy art corner in my condo.

Go to SaraRichard.com for more info on Sara and her latest projects. Check NewYorkComicCon.com for updates and scheduling on NYCC.

On the Beat With John Cosper

Earlier this week, I caught up with writer, author and wrestling historian John Cosper. In addition to wrestling, John is also an accomplished fiction author, who just released two new books. We talked about all of this in our interview at On the Beat With John Cosper.

“Girl Most Likely to Kill You” is available now and “Zombies of Oz” will be released this weekend. John gives a spoiler-free sneak peak at his two newest works, as well as a look ahead at the next book in the Dead Park series.

Of course, John never strays too far from wrestling. He's currently working on books with wrestlers Dean Hill and Mad Man Pondo and  broadcaster Dean Hill.

John tells a few Pondo tales and we both share our appreciation for the veteran wrestler. This will be the second Pondo book and we agree Pondo probably has enough stories to fill several books and many would be stranger than fiction.

We finish our interview discussing the latest in Ohio Valley Wrestling. WWE legend Al Snow continues to do great things at OVW. John shares his thoughts on the talented roster and events.

Whether through his wrestling books, his event recaps or his talent evaluations, John always provides great wrestling content. Additionally, his fiction is a quick diversion from the squared circle.

I appreciate John's time and thoughts. I also am grateful for his ever-growing section on my bookshelf.

Go to DeadParkBooks.com and EatSleepWrestle.com for all info on John's books. Check back here and TheEveryDayFan.com for more interviews and wrestling coverage.

On the Beat With John Bullard of Chicagoland Championship Wrestling

It's been a while, but I was back “On the Beat” talking wrestling with John Bullard of Chicagoland Championship Wrestling. That interview is at On the Beat With John Bullard.

Enduring a hiatus due to world events, CCW is back and looking stronger than ever. After a great debut in October 2020, CCW followed with another fantastic event in June 2021. It's been a bumpy ride through the pandemic for everyone, but CCW weathered the storm. In the absence of live shows, Bullard kept busy by building CCW on other levels.

On October 9, CCW is back with The Return, called a Two Year Anniversary Super Show.

We started the interview by discussing all of this. Putting together a show like this is not an easy task. Coordinating schedules of  international and local stars is a daunting task, but Bullard got it done.

From there, we discussed the Indiana and Chicago area independent wrestling scene, working with other promotions, the future of CCW and more. Bullard discussed several partnerships, including the latest with Liquid Death Mountain Water.

Before finishing our chat, I asked Bullard about his musical endeavors. A skilled musician, he has a lot of fantastic videos on YouTube.

Back in action, CCW has a bright future. Bullard promised to return for an update interview as things develop.

I appreciate Bullard's time and consideration. Check back here and TheEveryDayFan.com for coverage and a recap of CCW's The Return, as well as other wrestling coverage.

Talking Music and Travel with Haley Reinhart

After seeing Haley Reinhart in concert twice recently, I saw her again last weekend. This time it was via Zoom for Talking Music and Travel With Haley Reinhart for Global Traveler.

As well documented here, I am a big fan of Haley. Her Postmodern Jukebox version of "Creep" blows me away. Of course, that is just one of her many amazing performances. Not surprisingly, it would be hard to pick a top song (or even top five), but "Creep" would have to be in the mix.

The interview came together very quickly and easily. Even as I sat on Zoom waiting for the little light to appear notifying me of Haley's presence, I couldn't believe it was actually happening.

I admit, I was a bit stiff, probably from over-rehearsing my questions, and a tad nervous. Honestly, my nerves only kicked in a few minutes prior to the interview. Up until then, I was amazingly calm.

As for Haley, should couldn't have been nicer. She recognized me right away. We briefly chatted, then jumped into the interview, which lasted about 15 minutes. Post-interview, we chatted a bit more. I didn't want to take too much of her time, but I also didn't want to appear like I was rushing. I would have talked to her all day, but I think she had better things to do, especially in Nashville.

We covered several topics, including her start, her musical family, her musical choices and more. We finished with a bit of travel talk (I had to tie it into GT somehow LOL).

Oddly, when it ended, I felt more nervous than before. I think my adrenaline was gone and now I realized how cool this was for me. I hope Haley knows just how much this meant to me.

I greatly appreciate Haley for her time and consideration. I thank her media team for facilitating this interview. I also appreciate the fine folks at Global Traveler for giving me a little creative freedom with my online contributions. This was a bucket list interview for me and one of my biggest ever.

For more info on Haley and her touring, go to HaleyReinhart.com. Check out all my interviews on the Johngy's Beat YouTube channel.

Friend Encounters: Skates and Cassie

Friend Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

I believe today's Friend Encounters features our youngest friend in the series. Litte Cassie wasn't even a year old when she met Chicago Wolves mascot Skates.
Cassie is the daughter of my huge hockey fan friend Jason. It's no shock her first friend encounter would be hockey-related. Cassie doesn't look extremely impressed with Skates. In fact, she looks rather leery of the big mascot. I can't blame her. As all know, I love mascots, but as a one (or less) year old, I am not sure I would have that same affection. I'm guessing this is her first encounter with a mascot. It must appear to be a life-size version of one of her stuffed animals. Of course, being Jason's daughter, this will not be her last hockey-related encounter. Other than his family, friends and Star Wars, hockey is Jason't big love, a love he is no doubt passing on to Cassie and her little brother Luke.
As for Skates, he played it cool. He didn't get too close to her face to really scare her. Skates is a seasoned pro.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #604 Russell Wilson & Will Barton

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a weekly series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebrities wearing sports jerseys. Today, I continue my alphabetical march through all MLB teams.

Born in Ohio, Russell Wilson starred at NC State and Wisoncin before being drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in round three of the 2012 NFL draft. A nine-time Pro Bowl player, Wilson led the Seahawks to the NFL title in Super Bowl XLVIII. Wilson was traded to the Denver Broncos after last season. He actually wore a Colorado Rockies jersey before wearing a Broncos jersey and earned a Celebrity Jersey Card in the process.

Will Barton was born in Baltimore and played college basketball for Memphis. The Portland Trailblazers selected him in the second round of the 2012 NBA draft. Midway through his third season, he was traded to the Denver Nuggets. After last season, he was traded to the Washington Wizards. Sometime during his stay with the Nuggets, he threw out a first pitch for the Rockies to earn his Celebrity Jersey Card.

On the Beat at Rocket Pro Wrestling

Yesterday I had a couple interviews with talented folks from Rocket Pro Wrestling. I got interesting info and insight. I didn't get all of the answers to the major questions at RPW, but I got new perspectives.
I started with Gunner Brave. As part of the World Famous Fabulous Idols, Gunner is right in the middle of all sorts of action.
As usual, I got a little background first. Trained by Seth Rollins among others, Gunner gave his thoughts on the WWE superstar. He also talked about his first match, his finisher, his first title win and more from the early stages of his career.
From there we moved to his feelings on crowd reactions, whether he works as a fan favorite or a heel. I saw another side of the man who currently wrestles “on the dark side” with the Idols.
Of course, we had to delve into the latest happenings with the group. At the last RPW show and the aftermath, there seemed to be a bit of dissension in the group, although leader Joey Roth dismisses such notions. Gunner admits there was a minor situation, but states all is fine within the Idols. I am not so sure about that, but “Darkness Falls” on October 1 might provide more answers to that.
Gunner is a young wrestler on the rise with an incredibly bright future. Whether or not his future lies with the Idols is to be seen. Either way, he looks to continue to improve and become one of the bright young independent stars.
It was interesting learning more about Gunner. Although he is in the Idols, who are causing all kinds of issues at RPW, he has a genuine appreciation for RPW and the fans. Gunner stresses respect, both giving and receiving. I already respected Gunner for his accomplishments at such an early point in his career, but I gained a whole new level of respect after this interview.
The next chapter in his story will come on October 1 at “Darkness Falls.” He issued an open challenge and it was accepted. Gunner ends the interview discussing this matchup.
Those interviews are at On the Beat With Gunner Brave and On the Beat With Rion Skillz and Steve Ahrendt. Also, check TheEveryDayFan.com for more wrestling coverage. Also, check RocketProWrestling.com for more info and news.

The Johngy "OR ELSE" Podcast Ep. 36: Regan Lydale

When I last featured fledgling wrestler Cam Raithel, she had not wrestled an official match. Today, I feature Cam again, but it's not quite the same Cam.

Cam appeared on Episode 4 of The Johngy "OR ELSE" Podcast. Recently, she made another appearance or should I say Regan Lydale made the appearance. A lot happened between the appearances, most notably Cam developing Regan, her wrestling alter ego and Regan wrestling several matches. Cam/Regan discussed all of it.

Cam and Tommy made me realize something interesting about name changes. I always thought they would want to wrestle under their given name. I didn't even think they might want to develop another personality or an extension of their personality.

Cam talks about the reasons behind her name change and how she came up with the new name. Both are interesting tales., as is the rest fo her story.

I am very excited to be following Cam's journey from the beginning. As Tommy states, she will go as far as she wants in the world of wrestling. She has the look, ability, charisma and attitude to go on to a bright future.

Check out the video on The Johngy "OR ELSE" YouTube channel or listen to it on Spotify. Check back here as I provide recurring updates on her career.

Jake Roberts at New York Comic Con 2021

New York Comic Con returns October 6-9. Once again, I will be "On the Beat" meeting celebrities and creators of all sorts. I'm guessing, NYCC 2022 will once again have a solid wrestling presence. Last year, Jake "The Snake" Roberts appeared at Michael Kingston's Headlocked Comic booth. I don't know if Roberts will be back, but I know Michael will be there and he will have some awesome wrestling legends with him.
I probably got interested in wrestling later than most. I watched it a bit in my youth, but I really started following it in my late teens.
Because we didn't have cable, my wrestling viewing consisted of the WWF and syndicated wrestling from Texas. That limited my exposure to certain wrestlers. I usually learned of them if/when they appeared on WWF television.
When Jake "The Snake" Roberts and his snake Damien arrived on the WWF scene, I was highly intrigued. I didn't know much about his earlier days. He was so charismatic, yet menacing. He was so good at being bad, the WWF had to turn him into a good guy. Fans cheered him so much, his popularity started to rival Hulk Hogan's.
Of course, in the pre-internet days, nobody knew much about the personal lives of wrestlers. I certainly didn't know of the tragic life Roberts endured, nor the demons he battled. All of that probably helped his character formation, but also hurt his overall career.
His time in the WWF was relatively short. He went to WCW and then back to the WWF, but by then his career was basically done.
In recent years, a lot of his struggles became known. With the help of Diamond Dallas Page, Roberts started to clean up his life. Roberts credits DDP with saving his life.
Roberts is currently signed with All Elite Wrestling as a manager. It's a great role for him. Known for his ring psychology, the AEW wrestlers can learn a lot from him.
Go to HeadlockedComic.com for more info on Michael's latest projects. Also go to AllEliteWrestling.com for more info on Roberts and the rest of the AEW talent. Check NewYorkComicCon.com for updates and scheduling on NYCC.

On the Beat With Brooke Tanner

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Brooke Tanner, who is at the beginning of her wrestling journey. Brooke will make her singles match debut against veteran Stacey Shadows in a couple weeks.

I loved having the opportunity to interview Brooke before her first solo match. I relish the idea of getting in at the beginning and following her career as it develops.

Brooke discussed getting interested in wrestling, her martial arts career and the start of her wrestling journey. It was a bit of a long and unique path, but it all ties together nicely.

A teacher by trade, Brooke pondered the thought of her students knowing what their teacher does and seeing her grapple. Brooke follows the path of other teacher/wrestlers like WWE Hall of Famers George “The Animal Steele and Tito Santana.

Already with the smarts of a veteran, Brooke opted not to reveal her finisher move until she gets to use it in a match. Of course, I quickly requested a future interview to discuss her finisher.

Specific to her match with Shadows, Brooke gave a bit of her strategy, without divulging everything. She also talked about soaking in the moment in front of her home state crowd.

Brooke's match against Shadows will take place October 8 at “They're Here,” a supershow presented by SSW and sNs at the Brat Stop in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The supershow will feature WWE Hall of Famer Tugboat (Typhoon) and All Elite Wrestler Max Caster.

The main event for the night is “The Punk Rock Prince” Jordan Kross with Billy Whack versus “Freakshow” Salem Crane. There's also a tag team match pitting The Midwest Express Kross and Luxon against “Ice Pick” Vic Capri and “Hater” Pauly Thomaselli. Another women's match has Skye Blue battling “The Chicago Bombshell” Shelly Benson. Also appearing are “The Fanny Pack Kid” Kal Herro, “Superstar” Steve Boz, Mikey Wild, TW3, Dave Rydell, Doug Simmons, Dr. X and more.

“They're Here” is a supershow in name and substance. This card is stacked and Brooke is thrilled to be a part of such a big show, especially for her singles debut.

It was a real pleasure meeting and talking to Brooke. She has a bright future. With her enthusiasm, charisma, intelligence and athletic ability, she will go far in wrestling. "They're Here" is a mjor step for her and I look forward to it, too.

I thank Brooke for her time and I wish her great luck in her match. Watch our interview at On the Beat With Brooke Tanner. Check back here and TheEveryDayFan.com for more wrestling interviews and coverage.

On the Beat With Emma Vanderheyden of the Chicago Blitz

My history with the Chicago Blitz goes back to 2013, when the (then) Bliss played in the newly rebranded Legends Football League. A new chapter was written recently when the Blitz beat the Atlanta Steam to become X League (rebranded from the LFL) champs.

Blitz safety Emma Vanderheyden is one of the players carrying on the legacy created by four time champion coach Keith Hac, QB Heather Furr, ChrisDell Harris and the rest of the Bliss. Sidney Lewis is coaching this new bunch of players, but the results are the same. Chicago is once again champion. I talked to Vanderheyden about all of this in our recent interview at On the Beat With Emma Vanderheyden.

A multi-sport athlete, Vanderheyden is a native of Rockford, about 90 minutes west of Chicago. She is a veteran of football, having played high level flag football and full tackle women's football before joining the Chicago Blitz.

Since, the uniforms have been a source of much discussion over the years, I had to ask Vanderheyden for her thoughts. She pretty much echoed the response I have gotten from previous players.

I always looked at the uniforms as a double-edge sword. On one hand, they certainly are attention-getting. Yet on the other side, they sometimes take attention away from the talent and quality of football being played.

Another regular topic is the amount of games. This season, the X League teams played only two games. While that is a small amount, in the aftermath of the pandemic, at least the league is back on track. Knowing Coach Lewis, it just gave him more time to prepare the Blitz.

Vanderheyden gave her thoughts on the time and effort put into playing just two games. It's right here when her passion really is palpable.

These women have organized workouts for months, but pretty much work out all year, to play the sport they love. Two games is a disappointing schedule, but it doesn't make them any less determined or focused.

Much like players in the past, Vanderheyden speaks of the preparation of Coach Lewis and his staff. That's not just player speak either. I saw firsthand how hard Coach Hac and his coaches worked and I see Coach Lewis doing the same.

I often hear folks ask how and why everyone works so hard for so few games and little recognition. The answer is simple. It's the passion I just mentioned. This isn't a casual activity. This is a mission.

In interviews from the Rockford area when the Blitz played its game there, Vanderheyden spoke about the legacy. I asked her about her place in carrying the banner and helping younger women and future generations.

Lastly, Vanderheyden talked about meeting fans and signing autographs. The first couple times might have been a pleasant surprise, but Vanderheyden and her teammates better get used to it, because fans want their moment with their favorite players.

Along those lines, fans will get a great chance to meet the team Friday, September 23. There is a Blitz championship party at Society on the near west side of Chicago.

Before we finished, we engaged in a little fun banter about championship rings. I flashed my 2014 ring, but soon she will have a shiny new one on her finger and it is well-deserved!

I thank Vanderheyden for her time and consideration. Once again, I congratulate her and the team for bringing another championship to Chicago. Check back here and TheEveryDayFan.com for my recurring coverage of the Blitz.

Friend Encounters: Steve McMichael and Jim Strong

Friend Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

After starring at the University of Texas, Steve McMichael (no ending "s") was delected by the New England Patriots in the 1980 NFL Draft. He played a few games with the Pats in 1980, but joined the Chicago Bears in 1981. It was there that Mongo became a star.
For the next 13 seasons, he was one of the leaders on a ferocious defense. Often overshadowed by Hall of Famers Mike Singletary, Dan Hampton and Richard Dent and even William "Refrigerator" Perry, McMichael is right up there in accomplishments. He is also near the top in being a character, a rait which would serve him well in later years when he transitioned to wrestling.
McMichael finished his NFL career with one season with the Green Bay Packers, but Bears fans like to forget that sight. Mongo will always be a Bear!
Unfortunately, recently Mongo revealed he is suffering with ALS. Physically, he is a shel of his former self, but he is still the same character. You can't keep Mongo down. The condition is sapping his strength, but not his heart and soul.
My friend Jim met McMichael in better days. Just five years ago, McMichael looked as good as ever.
Our thoughts and prayers are with McMichael as he bravely faces his fture. I also thank him for so many great memories on the football field. Plaque or not, Mongo is a Hall of Famer in my book.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #603 Sierra Joy Romero & Estela Giles

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a weekly series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebrities wearing sports jerseys.

California native Sierra Joy Romero starred on the softball field at the University of Michigan, where she was a three time Big Ten Player of the Year. She went on to play pro softball with the USSSA Pride. An absolute stud on the field, Romero is a class act off as well. Romero earned her Celebrity Jersey Card during day with the Boston Red Sox.

Estela Pinon starred at the University of Arizona, before joining the National Pro Fastpitch Chicago Bandits. I had the pleasure of knowing and interviewing her during her time in Chicago. Pinon married MLB pitcher Ken Giles and now has two children. Although Ken pitched for Philadelphia, Toronto and Houston, before joining Seattle this season, Estela gets a Celebrity Jersey Card wearing a Boston Red Sox jersey.

On the Beat With Timmy "Too Sweet" of Rocket Pro Wrestling

There are many parts of a professional wrestling show. While the wrestlers get most of the attention, and rightly so, there are many other folks who contribute to the show.

One of those staffers is the one who usually starts the show, the ring announcer. At Rocket Pro Wrestling, the ring announcer is Timmy “Too Sweet.”

I wanted to interview Timmy because he is entertaining and a big part of the RPW production, but also to show you don't have to be an athletic in-ring performer to be a part of pro wrestling. Timmy is a great example of that. That interview is at On the Beat With Timmy "Too Sweet" of Rocket Pro Wrestling.

Timmy described how he went from being a fan to starting his ring announcing career. It wasn't a lifelong goal. He didn't start In his teens. Still, once given the opportunity, he dove in with passion and worked hard to hone his craft.

Along those lines, Timmy talked about his announcing style. He mentioned a few announcing role models and talked about pre-event preparation and post-event conditions.

Of course, Timmy discussed the shows and crowds at RPW. Hype (and overhype) is natural in the world of pro wrestling, but as I witnessed first hand last weekend, the hype about the RPW crowd is real. The louder the crowd got, and it was rock concert level loud, the louder Timmy had to get to make his announcements.

After making the transition from fan to worker, Timmy talked about seeing wrestling from a new viewpoint. He also discussed the fun and surprise of signing autographs and meeting fans.

Timmy ended by putting over Darkness Falls, RPW's next show on October 1 in Joliet, Illinois. The show features “The Icon” Grin facing “All Day” Marshe Rockett in a casket match. This would be a main event level match anywhere. Grin is seasoned veteran who came out of a semi-retirement for RPW. Despite his devilish ways, he became quite a fan favorite. On the other hand, long time good guy Rockett seems to have had a change of heart.

This was an especially fun interview for me. I have known Timmy and his wife (RPW photog Missy) for a long time, from our mutual love of comic cons. It was great seeing them again last weekend.

I appreciate Timmy for his time and consideration. Check back here and TheEveryDayFan.com for my wrestling interviews and other wrestling coverage.

Haley Reinhart Returns!

Last week, Haley Reinhart finally returned to the area for a birthday concert. After a few cancelled tours due to the pandemic, Haley was back better than ever. I wrote about the night at Haley Reinhart Birthday Concert for Global Traveler.

I have been a fan of Haley's since stumbling upon her videos on YouTube. While I missed her appearance on American Idol in 2011. Usually one to stick with older music, I quickly became of fan of Haley's. I have seen her four times now and I will be seeing her again next weekend.

A native of he Chicago area, Haley's local shows are always special. They are filled with family and friends, although Haley treats everyone like family. She is incredibly sweet in the meet-and-greets and her fater Harry, a musician on his own, is usually around talking to fans, before he joins Haley on stage.

Check out HaleyReinhart.com for more info and her concert schedule. Check GlobalTravelerUSA.com for all of my GT contributions.

Tom Cook at New York Comic Con 2021

New York Comic Con returns October 6-10. Once again, I will be "On the Beat" meeting all sorts of celebrities and creators.
I first met animator Tom Cook many years ago. Because he worked on He-Man, I asked Johngy's Beat contributor Tommy Else (also known as Eric St. Vaughn in the wrestling world), a big fan of He-Man, to conduct the interview.  I figured he was the best person to get a fun interview and he did. That interview can be found at On the Beat With Tom Cook.
Beginning his animation career in 1978, Tom worked on many popular cartoons, including Smurfs, Scooby-Doo, Pacman and more. If you watched cartoons, you had to see Tom's work somewhere.
Mostly retired from that work, he is still active on the comic con scene, selling commissions and other artwork. At New York Comic Con, Tom was one of the most popular creators. Never wanting to get in the way of sales, I checked his booth more than a dozen times looking for a moment when no fans were interacting with him. Finally on Saturday morning, just a NYCC opened, I got a moment with Tom before the crowd hit.
It was great catching up with him. He is a legend in the industry. Of course, I had to mention his work on Aquaman (in SuperFriends). While I did n;pt see any Aquaman solo art, Aquaman was present in his SuperFriends artwork and that's cool enough for me.
Check NewYorkComicCon.com for updates and scheduling on NYCC.

On the Beat With Joey Roth and Roxi Heart

Today, I feature a 2fer interview. I talked to Joey Roth and Roxi Heart about the latest happenings at Rocket Pro Wrestling (On the Beat With Joey Roth and Roxi Heart). Then I talked to their alter egos Scott and Elizabeth about their upcoming performance in "The Tempest" at the GreenMan Theatre Troupe (On the Beat With Scott and Elizabeth).

Joey, Roxi and the World Famous Fabulous Idols are heat magnets at Rocket Pro Wrestling. Due to events from the previous show, they are now in charge of RPW. Things aren't all smooth though. There are lingering issues with announcer Steve Ahrendt and simmering problems with Gunner Brave. Joey and Roxi discuss all of this and more about RPW.

Their talents aren't confined to the wrestling ring, however. The wrestling power couple will soon be performing together in The GreenMan Theatre Troupe's production of "The Tempest" in Elmhurst, Illinois. They talk about their acting backgrounds, performing together, the GreenMan Theatre and more.

Enjoy the interviews and check back here for my recurring coverage of RPW and wrestling. Also, check GreenManTheatre.org and RocketProWrestling.com for more info on these entertainment companies.

On the Beat With Rabbi Jeremy Fine of 2econd Wreslting

In March, I attended my first 2econd Wrestling show. Flood Zone was an excellent event, highlighted by Billie Starkz winning a tournament to become the first champ.

In July, I saw Walk This Way at Kings and Convicts Brewing Company. Starkz retained her title in an awesome match with Chelsea Green. There were several other great matches, including a fantastic four-way women's match won by Heather Monroe.

When 2econd Wrestling announced Deep Cut for October 27, it was the perfect time to get my first interview with promoter Rabbi Jeremy Fine. Earlier today, Rabbi Fine joined me on Zoom to discuss his young company, which can be found at On the Beat With Rabbi Jeremy Fine.

The interview started with a little football talk. A day after the Chicago Bears won on a rain-sokaed Sunday, we agreed the season was off to a great start. Similarly, as 2econd Wrestling approaches one year, everything is going great.

Rabbi Fine discussed the origins of 2econd Wrestling, including the meaning behind the name. He talked about the debut and the tournament to crown the first champ. Showing respect for other wrestling companies, Rabbi Fine explained his thought process in bringing in talent and selecting venues.

Having Starkz and Blair Onyx in the Championship Tournament was interesting, as was his reasoning. As a big supporter of women in sports, I applaud this. The two women rewarded his support by having excellent, competitive matches.

I was impressed by Fine's mindset. So many times, new wrestling companies debut promising big, game-changing shows. Some even start big, but usually don't live up to the hype or at least not for a long time.

Taking a unique approach, Rabbi Fine wants to be different than other companies, not out of negative feelings, but rather to offer a product fans can't find elsewhere. He's not booking huge names in large locations. He is building slowly, with a long-term plan in place.

I also liked Rabbi Fine stating one of his reasons for starting or enjoying running 2econd Wrestling is the learning process. I've never heard a promoter express that. That thirst for knowledge leads him to carefully choose everything involved in 2econd Wrestling.

Lastly, he discussed Deep Cut to be held at Durty Nellie's. Starkz will defend her title against an opponent to be announced later. Also announced is Charlie Kruel, I wrestler I have yet to see, but who comes with rave reviews.

My friend Tony and I bought tickets the day they went on sale. We were already excited about the show, but after talking to Rabbi Fine, I am even more amped to see it.

As 2econd Wrestling nears one year, the challenge is to keep the momentum. That's what separates the good from the great. I see 2econd Wrestling continuing its trajectory. I'll be “On the Beat” at Deep Cuts and recapping the action here. Check back here and TheEveryDayFan.com for my interviews with the talent from 2econd Wrestling and other wrestling coverage.

Friend Encounters: Fiona Dourif and Michael West

Friend Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends meeting celebrities.

Once again, today is a double celebrity Friend Encounter. Author Michael West might eschew that label, but his many novels put him in that category.
Fiona Dourif is the daughter of actor Brad Dourif and his wife psychic Jonina. She started her acting career a bit late, becoming a segment producer after college. She started acting soon after though.
She has a lengthy resume, but my favorite role is her part in the Child's Play franchise. I have been known to enjoy more obscure roles of the actors I meet (sometimes to their dismay). In this case, I first noticed her  Acting alongside her father, she appeared in two of the films in that series. Perhaps it is because the Child's Play franchise is very popular or maybe because she worked with her father or maybe just because she is cool, Fiona embraces her role in the movie and her spot in horror history.
Author friend Michael also has a place in horror history by way of the written word. Michael has written more than 20 books. I have several of his books on my shelves and always enjoy catching up with him at cons, whether he is an attendee or a creator-vendor.
You can get more info on Michael at ByMichaelWest.com. I'm sure you will enjoy his books as much as I do.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #603 Luke Perry & Randy Savage

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a weekly series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebrities wearing sports jerseys. Today I feature two celebs with a wrestling connection.

Randy Poffo was a second generation wrestler. The son of Angelo and the brother of Lanny, Randy played minor league baseball before embarking on a Hall of Fame wrestling career. Randy gets a Celebrity Jersey Card for his days with the Cincinnati Reds organization. He also played in the minors for St. Louis and the Chicago White Sox. Unfortunately, Randy died in 2011 at the age of 59.
Born in Ohio, Luke Perry shot to fame on Beverly Hills, 90210. Like Savage, Perry also died young, at the age of 52. Perry's son wrestles as Jungle Boy in All Elite Wrestling. I had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing the elder Perry and he was a class act. His Celebrity Jersey Card comes from a ceremonial pitch he tossed for his home state Reds.

Pinfalls RETRO: WWE SummerSlam 2002

My podcast partner Tommy Else and I are back with Pinfalls with a twist. On Pinfalls RETRO: WWE SummerSlam 2002, we do a deep dive into the PPV from 20 years ago. With it being the 20th anniversary of this historic WWE PPV, we felt it was the perfect time to debut our new show.

This was the first SummerSlam under the WWE name and the first SummerSlam after the brand extension in May. Of special significance on SummerSlam 2002 is the PPV debut of Rey Mysterio, as well as the PPV return of “The Heartbreak Kid” Shawn Michaels.

The full card was:

Kurt Angle vs. Rey Mysterio

Chris Jericho vs. Ric Flair

Eddie Guerrero vs. Edge

WWE Tag Team Championship

Christian & Lance Storm (c) vs. Goldust and Booker T

Intercontinental Championship

Chris Benoit (c) vs. Rob Van Dam

Test vs. The Undertaker

Unsanctioned Street Fight

Triple H vs. Shawn Michaels

WWE Championship

The Rock (c) vs. Brock Lesnar with Paul Heyman

Obviously, we did not make our usual predictions (although I wanted to do so). Instead, we recapped the leadup to the matches, cited match highlights and gave our thoughts on all. We even covered the referees, announcers and match lengths.

We agreed this was one of the best SummerSlam cards top to bottom. We even agreed on the weakest match, which we still felt was top notch.

In addition to the matches we covered the other highlights and lowlights of the backstage segments. With a face Stephanie McMahon as GM of SmackDown and heel Eric Bischoff as Raw GM, there were a few bits of them interacting. Trish Stratus, Lillian Garcia and Howard Finkel also made an appearance.

Find Pinfalls RETRO: WWE SummerSlam 2002 on YouTube, The Every Day Fan Sports and The Johngy Or Else podcast. We hope you enjoy this Pinfalls RETRO video. We also welcome requests for other older PPVs, if you have any you'd like us to review.

Finally Met Britt

Britt Copano is another person I should have met years ago. Her resume includes modeling, acting, wrestling personality and more. She also is a firefighter. The lady is busy and quite visible on the Chicago scene. Yet somehow, I never had the pleasure of meeting her.

That finally changed in July at a sports card show. I saw Britt posted about her appearance there and I immediately made plans to be there. Also appearing were Doug Plank, Gary Fencik, Bobby Hull and more, but Britt was my main target. I did meet the others, too.

Britt was as sweet as could be. I previously had messaged her a few times about finally meeting her, but I didn't want to be creepy guy following her. She could not have been nicer though and she is even more beautiful in person,

I really want to interview Britt. She has such a great story. I know Britt is busy, but I am hoping some day, she will grant that interview. I waited several years to finally meet her. Maybe in a couple years, I will get that interview.

Until then, I encourage everyone to follow Britt on social media. Also look for her OnlyFans page.

On the Beat With Sam Leterna

Sam Leterna has already accomplished a lot in professional wrestling and she is just getting started. I had the pleasure of interviewing the wrestler-turned-broadcaster to talk about her blossoming career. That interview is at On the Beat With Sam Leterna.

While in her teens, Sam fell in love with wrestling, eventually training under Johnny Rodz, before heading to the Lance Storm Academy in Calgary. During her time with Storm, Sam decided on her ring name. That story is a fascinating slice of exactly who Sam is.

Unfortunately, injuries derailed Sam's in-ring career. While on the sidelines, Sam turned her focus to broadcasting.

Sam discussed her journey including the challenges of transitioning to her new roles, the effort and work required, the response from the wrestling community and more.

The thing that stands out about Sam for me is her thought-process. I mentioned in the interview I admire how much thought she puts into every move.  It seems every step she takes comes with much thought, respect for the business and passion. That combination leads to her success and popularity.

Sam is not afraid to try new things, nor is she afraid to change directions, but each step comes after deep thoughts. She started producing video content via Wrestle Tea. After doing interviews, Sam decided that wasn't her desire. She shifted gears, moving away from in-depth interviews, while still delivering other wrestling content.

Always open and honest, Sam spoke about the different directions of Wrestle Tea. I applaud Sam for her candor in discussing all of this. It's a lesson for everyone, especially those breaking into business. It's okay to change directions to follow your passion.

In addition to Wrestle Tea, Sam recently joined the broadcast crew at Major League Wrestling. She also announced she will be joining the team at Women's Wrestling Army for its next show.

During the interview, we covered all of these topics and more. Sam talked about her respect for wrestling's history, mentioning the Von Erich family, among others. She addressed the idea of moving into acting, an area I think would be a great fit.

I really enjoyed speaking with Sam. Still a young woman, Sam has quite a resume, but more importantly she is a well-grounded, respectful, charismatic person.

Already a fan of her work, my appreciation grew right from when I first approached her for the interview. She graciously and quickly accepted, but asked for a small charitable donation. She even offered other charities if I did not like her first suggestion. Not only does the interview benefit a great cause (the ASPCA in this case), but it shows the interviewer is serious and willing to give back.

Sam reminded me a lot of actress Dana DeLoreno, who I also interviewed. Although Sam is laser-focused with a deep knowledge of her craft, she is fun, quirky and so engaging. She has a brilliant future and I look forward to watching her career progress.

I thank Sam and appreciate her time and consideration. Follow her on social media for all of her updates. Check back here and on TheEveryDayFan.com for our coverage of Sam and the wrestling world.

Adam Cole at Squared Circle Expo

The Squared Circle Expo III is exactly seven months away. SCX III returns to Indianapolis, Indiana, April 7-8.

As I have previously written, SCX II surpassed the debut of SCX, which is amazing in itself. SCX's debut was the best first convention I have attended. SCX II was even better, definitely on e of the best cons ever.

One of the most popular wrestlers at SCX II was Adam Cole. Currently wrestling for All Elite Wrestling, Cole debuted in 2008. He had stints in Ring of Honor, WWE and elsewhere, but seems to have found a home in AEW. Cole also has been dating fellow wrestler Dr. Britt Baker, D.M.D. (Yes, she is legit a dentist.). Lucky guy!

Cole's line stretched out the entire time he was there. Despite the crowd, the line moved quickly, but Cole still made sure to make each encounter something a little special. He asked your name, shok you hand and thanked you for coming. It's personal touches like that you always remember.

That part doesn't surprise me. SCX's wrestling guests as a group are amazingly fan-friendly. In the two years of the event, I have had nothing but pleasant experiences with every wrestler. Not one was even bland.

My countdown to SCX III started while I was still at SCX II. It's still a while away, but it will be here quickly. I highly encourage everyone to lock in their tickets now. Get the VIP if possible, because it will save you lots of time in lines, allowing you to meet more wrestlers quicker.

Go to SquaredCircleX.com for more info. Check back here for my recurring coverage.

Dejah Mulipola Wins Athletes Unlimited Softball 2022 Title

Athletes Unlimited wrapped up its third season in dramatic fashion. After leading most of the season, catcher Dejah Mulipola fell behind, but roared back to take the 2022 season crown.

Heading into the final game of the season, Mulipola trailed Alyssa Denham by 184 points. Mulipola needed a big game and delivered. A triple, two walks and a home run later, Mulipola earned the AU crown. She finished 62 points ahead of Denham who pitched a victory earlier in the day.

UT-Kelsey Harshman

In addition to the usual season end sadness, tears flowed as the league and fans gave final cheers to the retiring Amanda Chidester and Danielle O'Toole. The two former Chicago Bandits received standing ovatuons throughout the games.

It was an amazing third season for AU Softball. Its debut season was played in an empty stadium due to the pandemic. Last season, fans were back, but the ongoing pandemic affected everything. This season, the crowds were back strong and it was softball as usual.

As already announced, AU will return to Rosemont for the 2023 season. The folks in Rosemont and the local fans would like nothing more than to have AU here permanently.

This week, players will return to their homes after goodbye hugs to their teammates. Fans will fill their weekends in other ways. All will recall many fun times this season and look forward to next season. It's only about 46 weeks away. Go to AUProSports.com for updates on all AU sports.

Friend Encounters: Barry Gordon and Tony Feddeler at C2E2 2022

Friend Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

I was very involved in this Friend Encounter. At C2E2 2022, I enlisted the help of my friend Tony Feddeler on Sunday at C2E2. The Fed showed up wearing my shirt (not a requirement) and was a huge help all day.

On the way there, I told Tony my stories from the previous days at C2E2, including meeting Barry Gordon, who was incredibly nice.

Gordon was a supporting cast member on tv's Barney Miller and Fish, along with appearing in Roddy Piper's Body Slam and dozens of other shows and movies. Gordon also did voice work on The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which is why most people there wanted to meet him.

Tony and I are old school though or maybe we are just old. Either way, we liked him in his tv roles and told him so. Gordon seemed genuinely touched, although he did say several folks asked him about those roles. Unfortunately, Gordon did not have any 8x10s from those roles. I think he might start bringing them to future appearances though.

Gordon was such a nice guy. He talked about his theater work in Los Angeles and asked about us. I told him I really wanted to interview him and gave him my card. I haven't heard yet from him, but I am keeping hope alive I will some day. If Gordon should see this or if anyone has contact info for him, please let me know.

My next convention stop is New York Comic Con, produced by ReedPop, who produces C2E2. I am sure I will have great fun there, too.

Go to C2E2.com and NewYorkComicCon.com for info and updates on these great shows. Also, check here for my recurring coverage of both.

Barry Gordon and Tony Feddeler is Chicago, IL-August 2022.

On the Beat With Kate Short

I recently interviewed Alissa Dalton of the Women's Pro Fastpitch league. Today, I feature my recent interview with Kate Short, a teammate of Alissa's in the WPF. That interview is at On the Beat With Kate Short.
A native of Virginia, Short started playing softball at a young age. As a youngster, she attended a National Pro Fastpitch game between the Chicago Bandits and the Washington Glory. She might have thought playing pro softball was a dream, but seeing the NPF game showed it could be a reality. Years later, it would become her reality.
While still in her early teens, many colleges recruited Short, but she ultimately chose James Madison University in her home state.
While with the Dukes, Short racked up many records and had many career highlights. Her biggest moment probably came during JMU's run in the 2021 Women's College World Series. On the biggest stage, Short connected on a game-winning home run in the opening game against top-seed Oklahoma. This is the stuff of dreams.
Short talked about all of this and her path to the Smash It Sports Vipers of WPF. Talking openly, Short discussed feeling a bit of fear in playing pro ball. I loved hearing that and I am sure young players will take a lesson from that.
Those youngsters are a big part of the reason Short is playing pro softball. Perhaps a much as she wanted to play, she also wanted to grow the game and encourage young players, like her sister, an infielder at Penn State University. Short's passion for the game is palpable.
In addition to playing, Short has coached youth teams for a couple years. She also started a real estate career.
We talked about the future of WPF. A new team in Oklahoma City has been announced for next season, joining the Vipers and the USSSA Pride. Short shares my hope another team will be added.
As I told Dalton, my pal and I thoroughly enjoyed a WPF series between the Vipers and Pride in Peoria, Illinois. While we would love a team or even games in Chicago, we will go to more WPF games next season, wherever they play.
I thank Short for her time and consideration. Check back here and TheEveryDayFan.com for more coverage of women's pro softball. Go to wprofastpitch.com for more info on the league and the players.

Happy Birthday Matt!!!

Today I celebrate the birthday of my nephew Big Money!
For those who don't know, Matt has played a major role in Johngy's Beat over the years. As Contributor Extraordinaire, Matt has done just about everything along the way and I appreciate it all.
More important, Matt has been a great part of my life. I have had so much fun with him. Whether we're standing on a Major League Baseball field or simply hanging out, it is always fun with Matt.
I'm sure Matt will celebrate with his family today, but I am there in spirit (he can't escape me) celebrating with them. I am also toasting him from here. Happy birthday, Matt! Have a fantastic day!

On the Beat With Alissa Dalton

Women's Professional Fastpitch recently ended its debut season. I interviewed Alissa Dalton, who played for the Smash It Sports Vipers. That interview is at On the Beat With Alissa Dalton.

Growing up in Texas, Dalton caught the attention of college recruiters early in her high school years. Recruiters came so early, they surprised Dalton, who relates that story. Eventually, she settled on the University of Oklahoma. After one season at Oklahoma, Dalton transferred to Louisiana.

While in college, Dalton earned many awards and accolades. She was the Sun Belt Conference Newcomer of the Year in 2018 and the Sun Belt Conference Player of he Year in 2019, among many other honors. A great hitter and defender, Dalton was also very durable, starting almost every game during her college years.

Dalton talked about having family and friends in the stands and what she hears on the field. Of course, I also had to ask about a defensive gem versus a game winning home run.

When the WPF came calling, Dalton answered and joined the Vipers. Dalton hit .322, good for fifth in the league. She was in the top ten of most offensive categories, often in the top five.

The first season of the WPF was classified as an exhibition, with the Vipers playing the USSSA Pride for most of their games. Each team also played a few other games with teams not in the WPF. The Vipers finished 17-13, while the Pride went 19-10.

The WPF already announced the Oklahoma City Spark will join the league for next season. While nothing has been stated, I am sure everyone hopes for at least one more team to be added for next season. A fourth team would enable better scheduling.

I attended a three game series between the Vipers and Pride in Peoria, Illinois, a few hours south of my Chicago area home. If the WPF doesn't come to me, I will go to the WPF. My friend and I were a bit surprised by the SRO crowd at the games. With neither team being local, we didn't know what to expect, but the thousands of fans rooted for softball, much like I did. We were treated to three fantastic games.

Dalton talked about her first season and the league in general. She states the Peoria experience was typical of all stops on the WPF schedule. A teacher by trade, Dalton staed she plans on returning next season. I put in my plea for a Chicago area team or at least a series around here, but I also promised to go to the closest series wherever it is.

The WPF is softball at its finest. The women are elite athletes, dedicated to playing, coaching and growing their sport.

I thank Dalton for her time and consideration. I look forward to an update interview next season, hopefully in person at a game. Check back here and TheEveryDayFan.com for more women's pro softball coverage.

On the Beat With Al Snow and David Vox Mullen

Al Snow made his wrestling debut in 1982. Since then, he has wrestled thousands of matches in hundreds of cities in several; companies, including the WWF/WWE.

Along the way, Al won multiple championships. In the WWE, he held the European title once, the Hardcore Championship six times and the Tag Team Championship once with friend Mick Foley (as Mankind). In 1999, he was ranked No. 52 of the top 500 singles wrestlers in the Pro Wrestling Illustrated PWI 500. The Wrestling Observer Newsletter named Al Most Underrated in 1996.

These days Al runs the daily operations at Ohio Valley Wrestling. Al turned OVW into a legitimate accredited trade school. OVW and Al are getting high praise and rave reviews.

Meanwhile, David Vox Mullen has created his own legacy in the world of entertainment. An actor, producer, singer, comedian and more, David is a force in the industry.

Al and David are teaming up to make a long-discussed idea into a reality. On Saturday, September 3 in Oregon, Illinois, An Evening With Al Snow, with Special Guest David Vox Mullen debuts. Tommy Else and I talked to Al and David to hear all about this new venture.

Five shows are already scheduled through November 11. After the Oregon show, they go to Washington, D.C., Braidwood, IL, Pittsburgh, PA and Memphis, Tennesssee. The Oregon show also features a special meet and greet, with the possibility of adding something similar to other shows.

Al and David talked all about their partnership, how this came to be and where it's going. Al is taking this new path very seriously. While humor comes very naturally to him, he is leaning on David to craft it into an enjoyable performance.

It will be more comedy than wrestling tales, but I am sure there will be enough wrestling topics, too. It is obvious they are working hard to make this great. It's also obvious they are having a lot of fun already.

Before we finished, Tommy asked Al about OVW, his training link to Al and Al's appearances on an old Chicago cable show. Al shed a lot of light on the show hosted by Lisa Aprati. Even though the shows were about 20 years ago, if you can find them on YouTube or elsewhere, they are worth a watch. Al was hilarious and the pair had great chemistry. Maybe that was a bit of test for Al, because I expect the same sort of hilarious chemistry between Al and David.

Tommy and I will be in attendance at the Braidwood show. I will have a full recap here. In the meantime, enjoy On the Beat With Al Snow and David Vox Mullen.
