On the Beat with Body Magic at Resistance Pro's "Stick It To Ya"

Yesterday, we featured an interview with Ashton Vuitton of Resistance Pro Wrestling.  Vuitton (one half of Body Magic) gave us the scoop that starting soon, every Wednesday will be "Ash Wednesday."
What that means is that every Wednesday, Vuitton will be posting new videos, pictures and other fun stuff on twitter.  How cool is that?  What a great gift he will be giving to all of his fans.  Remember though, you have to follow him at Ashton Vuitton on twitter!
Wait though, we are not done with our coverage of Vuitton.  Today we feature Vuitton and his Body Magic partner, Eric St. Vaughn.
At the recent Resistance Pro Stick It To Ya, Vuitton wrestled in a 10 man tag match.  As you saw yesterday, Vuitton suffered a neck scrape.  His team (Team Jocephus) won the match, but Vuitton was eliminated and not part of the victory celebration.
Throughout the match, ESV was stuck in the "coach box," an area designated by the Baron brothers to eliminate any interference from interested parties.  Needless to say, ESV and Vuitton were not happy about that development.
In any case, JohngysBeat.com Contributor Extraordinaire Matt "Big Money" Parker secured our first ever interview with Body Magic!  They mostly discussed the match.
Also notable is the unplanned cameo appearance by Jocephus Brody.  When Brody wants to interrupt an interview, I am not about to try to stop him.  That would be a futile (and possibly deadly) endeavor.
We are very excited to bring you this insider's look at Body Magic.  The crew at JohngysBeat.com is predicting big things for this talented tag team.  We see tag team titles in their future.
After you watch the video, check out Ashton Vuitton on Facebook, Eric St. Vaughn on FacebookBody Magic on Facebook and ResistancePro.com to get all of the info and updates.

On the Beat with Ashton Vuitton at Resistance Pro's "Stick It To Ya"

At Resistance Pro's Stick It To Ya, JohngysBeat.com's Contributor Extraordinaire (and Body Magic superfan) Matt "Big Money" Parker got an exclusive interview with Ashton Vuitton.  Despite suffering a neck injury (which hopefully will not scar the "Male Model"), Vuitton gave us a major scoop!  We will let Vuitton tell you all about it, but you will definitely want to follow Ashton Vuitton on twitter (especially every Wednesday-major hint).
Vuitton is an extremely talented, young wrestler.  Several months ago, he formed an alliance with Eric St. Vaughn.  Thus Body Magic was born.  Love Body Magic or hate Body Magic, you cannot ignore this pair.
We are very grateful that Vuitton gave us the interview and the scoop.  We really are looking forward to the results of that scoop.  It will definitely be something you won't want to miss.
In the meantime, please check out Ashton Vuitton on Facebook, Body Magic on Facebook and ResistancePro.com to get all of the info and updates.

Friendly Encounters: Josh Watko Meets Pat Priest and Butch Patrick

This is a weekly feature which highlights friends who have met celebrities.

I first connected with Josh Watko when I stumbled upon JW's Wrestling Memorabilia, his outstanding website.  Josh's site has reviews, lists, pictures, memories and meetings with wrestlers.  He is a great fan and a very knowledgeable one, which makes his site so enjoyable.
Josh's site is about wrestling, but Josh is not limited to just meeting wrestlers.  He recently sent me his recap of meeting two stars of tv's The Munsters and I now share it with you.

I usually limit myself to traveling solely for wrestling conventions and fanfests.  That being said, if a classic television star is going to be nearby and the stars align, I often can't resist giving it a go.  This is what happened when Pat Priest and Butch Patrick of "The Munsters" appeared at the Monster Bash Conference in Cranberry Township, PA.
I grew up watching "The Munsters" as well as "The Addams Family."  Both goofy, typical '60s series, but still the kind of entertainment that will take your mind off of everything else for thirty minutes or so.  I'd heard of the Monster Bash Conference before, but none of the previous celebrity appearances that I knew of really interested me.  In December of 2012 I saw the flyer advertising the mini Munsters reunion and it did intrigue me.  Although I had met Mr. Patrick before, Pat Priest was completely new for me.  My mind also flew to the amazing Munsters action figures that had been released not long before.  While Herman, Lily, and Grandpa came packaged separately, Marilyn and Eddie were sold in a two-pack.  What better item to get signed?  After receiving the ghoulish figure twosome for Christmas, my mind was made up.
The show was only about forty minutes from my home, which didn't make it feel as if I was going out of my way for this meet.  Upon arrival, I could tell that the Monster Bash show is the kind of gathering that any fan of vintage sci-fi and horror (think '40s thru '70s) would love to find.  Though I really had no interest beyond meeting the Munsters, I appreciated how much effort went into the show for the attendees who look forward to these three days for the entire calendar year.  Film viewings, live entertainment, celebrity appearances, plenty of merchandise, and an overall "hands-on interactive" feeling seems to set it apart from the "Take-my-money-here's-your-autograph" feel of so many shows.  You could tell that the large majority of attendees at this event feel like family.  With the many warm greetings I received in my hour or so spent, I felt very welcome as well.
Conveniently, the celebrity tables were set up in the main hallway after turning the corner from registration.  Butch and Pat had yet to arrive, but their tables were fully set with their photos for sale, and a banana was also present on each.  Spotting the banana made me think that both would soon be making their way down, so I decided to check out the vendor room.  A short jaunt was all it took.  I popped my head out into the hallway to see the bananas being devoured by the Munster legends.  Pat Priest was first on my agenda.  I was greeted with a warm smile and handshake.  Pat may have been the second Marilyn Munster, but in my opinion the true Marilyn.  Beverley Owen played the character for the first few episodes, but most Munster Memories are filled with Miss Priest.  She is also the Marilyn as portrayed on the action figure.
Any autograph was just $20 from Pat, and photos with her were free.  I have a previous photo with Butch, so a photo with Pat was my goal.  The fact that it was included in the price of the autograph was even better.  She went to great pains to make sure that the photo came out perfect with good lighting.  It's the little things like that which prove that you have a celebrity that cares about the fan experience.  Pat was elated to see the figure and asked me if I had bought it at that show.  She does not have one of her own.  Sadly, the vendors at the show only had the other cast members for sale or a special boxed set of all five characters that are colored black and white.
Butch Patrick was next, and also charged $20.  Surprisingly, he informed me that he was also including a photo op with the price of the autograph, so I decided to ask for a "Munster sandwich" photo of the two with me in the middle.  Both were happy to oblige, and I almost look like Herman in the photo with how I towered over them.
Overall, it was a very satisfying experience.  If another star that I had an interest in meeting were to appear at a future show, I would definitely consider attending Monster Bash again...even if, to me, it's really "Munster Bash."

I really appreciate Josh sharing his celebrity encounters.  Some day, I hope to meet the man behind JW's Wrestling Memorabilia.  Now that would be a friendly encounter!

Celebrity Jersey Cards #145 Kathleen Robertson & Jason Alexander

This is a regular feature which attempts to combine my lifelong passion for bubblegum cards with my semi-professional interest in celebrities.  It has been a while since the last Celebrity Jersey Cards, which highlighted Chicago baseball and featured Kelsey Grammer and Nick Jonas.  Maybe now, you see why it has been a while.  Today, I am cleansing the palate though, while still highlighting Chicago baseball.

Actress Kathleen Robertson actually has a connection to the aforementioned Grammer.  They both were on tv's Boss, a fictional series focusing on Grammer as the Mayor of Chicago.  Robertson might be best known for her role on Beverly Hills, 90210, but she has also done plenty of other television and feature films.  Robertson must have been promoting Boss when she threw out the first pitch at US Cellular.  She was very excited, as you can see in this video of her pitching and doing a little jump.  Of course, I would have liked it jump or no jump.  I don't know Robertson's connection to #12, but at the time of this pitch, it belonged to A.J. Pierzynski.  Robertson, as an excited, attractive woman pitcher, makes this one of my favorite Celebrity Jersey Cards.
Jason Alexander also appeared with Kelsey Grammer in the 2004 musical adaptation of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, but he is obviously most known for his role as George on Seinfeld.  While Alexander isn't nearly as cute as Robertson, I do like his Celebrity Jersey Card.  He gets points for wearing a Cubs hat and I also like the tarp.  My only complaint might be the shirt under the jersey, but it appears to be casual enough to be okay.  Besides, it is better than when he wore the Lou Gehrig jersey.

On the Beat with the Central Division Champ Chicago Rush

Okay, technically, they are not Central Division champs yet, but it would take a ridiculous scenario to play out on the last week for them not be be Central Division champs.  Therefore, JohngysBeat.com is declaring the Chicago Rush as division champs.
Contributor Extraordinaire Matt Parker and I attended practice last Thursday and saw a loose, confident and happy Chicago Rush team.  Coach McMillen and Assistant Coach Housman ran the team through drills and spoke to them at the end.  The message was simple.  The team has come a long way and they still have a way to go, but they are headed in the right direction.
All of this is so very true.  I have previously written about the somewhat uncertain status of the team.  The AFL is now in charge of the Chicago Rush.  Through it all, Coach McMillen has forged ahead and basically willed his team to do the same.  It really has been quite a ride.
The Rush face the San Jose Sabercats (12-5) tonight.  It is basically a meaningless game, except Coach McMillen would never allow such a thing.  I promise you the Rush will play this game like they have played all other games, like it is for their lives.
We talked to defensive lineman Darrell Campbell after practice and got his thoughts on the playoffs and more.  Campbell went to Notre Dame and was on the 2005 Chicago Bears practice squad.  He later played for the 2009 Grey Cup champion Montreal Alouettes under (current Bears coach) Marc Trestman and he gave us his thoughts on Coach Trestman.
I had a little fun with Campbell at the start of the interview.  I referred to him as a legend and he is one.  He is a local Chicago kid who has gone on to have a solid career.  I love players like Campbell.  I greatly respect what he has done.
I also greatly respect all that Coach McMillen has done.  It is well-documented here that I have followed his career and I firmly believe he will be inducted into the AFL Hall of Fame this year.  He should also be AFL Coach of the Year for what he has done.  Still, Coach McMillen will hear none of that.  The chase for the title is all that is on his mind right now.  We got Coach's thoughts on the upcoming game and the playoffs.
Once again, I thank the Chicago Rush organization for their hospitality.  I hope you all are enjoying this as much as I am.

Now This is a Tag Team!

One of the best parts of Resistance Pro Wresting happens after the actual night of wrestling.  Most of the R Pro talent either appears at their table selling their stuff and posing for pictures or just mingles with the crowd.    They are all cool about posing, even though they get asked a lot.
I scored a two-fer at the last show.  Nikki St. John (a top contender for the Women's title) and Sheri Shaw (Musical Director) were standing together, when I jumped between them and asked for a photo.  I could not miss the opportunity to be surrounded by two beautiful women!
The really awesome thing about them is that in addition to their beauty, both ladies are as sweet as can be.  Oh sure, Nikki will kick your butt in the ring, but she is great to her fans.  It has been a pleasure knowing them and enjoying their work.
If my passion for R Pro isn't enough to get you to come to an R Pro show, perhaps the idea of meeting these beautiful, talented and sweet women might get you to attend a show.  As a matter of fact, there is a show tonight in Willowbrook.  For more info, go to ResistancePro.com.

Color Me Purple

I liked Star Wars.  Liked.  I did not love Star Wars.  It did not change my life.  I did not wait excitedly for the sequels (heck, I only saw the next two).
I admit for that time, it was very cool.  The effects were awesome.  Soon though, the stories got complicated beyond belief and the effects became too much.  At some point there is such a thing as overdoing something, even if it is a good something.
This year at C2E2, I saw a Star Wars character in a new light.  Actually, I saw R2D2 in regular light, but a different paint job.  R2D2 was purple!
A purple R2D2?  This I could find interesting.
Then I thought I had better check to make sure this really was a purple R2D2 and not another robot I did not know from the Star Wars franchise.  I'd hate to be accused of lazy journalism.
I found out that it is R2D2 with a custom purple paint job.  Now I could freely go on and on about how cool a purple R2D2 would have been.  Perhaps C3PO could have been a metallic purple.
In my search for answers though, I came across a picture on the MySpace page for Terri Runnels.  Apparently, I am not the only one who likes purple R2D2.
Then I had a thought.  Was this whole R2D2 purplization a clever ruse to get the attention of lovelies like Terri?  Wow.  If so, I have an even greater respect for it.
Heck, I would paint myself purple if I could get that type of affection.

Paper Marlin

Last winter I did a few online pieces for the Patch about the St. Demetrios youth basketball team featuring Louie's sons and his nephew.  Louie and i talked about me doing some coverage of the Little League team he would be coaching this season and a Paper Marlin was born.
My older readers will recognize that as a take on George Plimpton's great book, Paper Lion.  Plimpton was a writer who practiced with the Detroit Lions and actually took some snaps at quarterback during an exhibition game.
My goal in becoming a Paper Marlins was to provide a little coverage of the Lincolnwood Marlins, but I also admit to having a personal reason, too.  Due to health reasons, I never played Little League baseball.  I viewed this as a chance to partake in the Little League experience as best as I could at my age.
Louie and his coaches (Bill Pabst and Harry Konstantopoulos) immediately made me feel like part of the team.  The kids also welcomed "Coach John."  I took part in some practices along with my "teammates" and actually learned a few things about playing.  During games, I coached first base a few times and warmed up the pitcher at times, too.
Of course, me actually playing wasn't going to happen.  I might have been bigger and stronger, but as Kramer once said, "We're all on the same skill level."  Well, to be honest, all of the kids were probably better than me.  We all had fun with the possibility that I would actually play though.  Okay, I admit that a teeny part of me actually wanted to log in an appearance in a game.
In the end, I never got into a game.  In the end, the Marlins won the championship.  Most importantly, in the end, I was a part of a Little League team.  I had lived the Little League experience that I wanted for all my life.
I want to publicly thank the Patch for allowing me to write the Paper Marlin series.  I want to thank the Lincolnwood Little League, Coach Louie and the Marlins for making me feel welcome and a real part of the team.  This was a blast for me.

Sid Vicious is Really Tough

I remember the first time I saw Sid Vicious on a wrestling show.  He was huge and frightening.  The man was a physical monster.  He looked like he could legitimately destroy anyone.
It wasn't until many years later when I saw how tough he really was.  Sid suffered a horrific injury.  He snapped his lower leg while jumping off the middle rope in a match.  It was just a freak thing.  The move itself was not particularly risky.  Sid was just very unlucky.
The video is graphic.  Sid's leg is bent at an abnormal angle.  Sid is wrenched with pain.  This injury ranks up there with the sickest ones I have ever seen in sports.
I cannot imagine sustaining such an injury.  Plus, it was on national television for all to see and the video is all over the internet, too.  It takes a real tough guy to come back from this.
Sid did come back.  He was nearing the end of his career at the time, but he did return to the ring.  Now that is tough
Back in May, Sid made an appearance at Resistance Pro Wrestling.  Once again, R Pro pulled an ace out of the deck.  Sid was gracious and very fan-friendly.  I had the chance to talk to him for a few minutes as he arrived and he could not have been nicer.
R Pro is having their next show on Friday, July 26.  Sid won't be there, but you never know who might show up.

Friendly Encounters: Glen Rylko Meets Dennis Lamp

This is a weekly feature about friends who have met celebrities.

There are so many things I like about today's feature.  Glen Rylko is a Chicago guy.  I first met Glen at a Resistance Pro Wrestling event, although I am pretty sure we had crossed paths at many events prior to that one.
Glen is a sports and wrestling fan.  He has met many stars, but I chose to feature him with Dennis Lamp, former pitcher on both sides of Chicago as well as elsewhere.  Glen has met bigger stars, but Lamp is perfect for this feature.
Coincidentally, I was at the same game where Glen met Lamp.  How did I miss that photo opportunity.  I would have loved to have met Lamp.
Lamp debuted on the 1977 Cubs, right when I was really getting into baseball.  I liked the idea of following a guy right from the beginning and I picked Lamp as one of those guys.  In 1981, he was traded to the White Sox (a rather rare occurrence back then) and settled into the role of a long relief guy.  He was an important part of the 1983 AL West champ White Sox, the first Chicago baseball team to reach the playoffs in my life.
Lamp left Chicago after that season and pitched nine more seasons, including a ridiculously good 11-0 1985 season with the Toronto Blue Jays.
Lamp is wearing the 1983 Sox cap and Glen is wearing the 2013 Stanley Cup Champions Blackhawks shirt.  Those are two great moments in Chicago sports history.
As I wrote, there are just so many great things about this picture.  I really appreciate Glen for sharing the moment.  I also appreciate Glen for coming up and introducing himself at the R Pro event.  Hopefully, in the future, I will have more pictures of Glen with stars he has met.

On the Beat with Walt Housman of the Chicago Rush-7/18/2013

Yesterday, I ran a few videos from the media session at a Chicago Rush practice earlier in the week.  I got one more interview, but this one was a one-on-one and was more general (and less about the big game with Arizona).  I wanted to run this one separately, because Assistant Coach Walt Housman gave us an interesting interview.
Part of the fun of this interview is Coach Hous was free ad easy with his time and the subject matter.  In fact, you will see that midway through the interview, I was ready to end it, but Coach Hous volunteered to keep going.  Fine by me.  I love this stuff!
Coach Hous was an offensive lineman at Iowa.  He went on to play four seasons in the Arena Football League and he also played for the 1987 New Orleans Saints.  Since retiring, he has coached in college or and AFL.  He joined the Rush staff in 2001.
Coach Hous and Coach Bob McMillen make a great team.  These men are "football guys."  They command respect and they get it!  Even during this somewhat turbulent season, the Rush is having an excellent season.
I love this interview.  From my perspective it is more of a conversation.  Coach Hous was willing to talk longer and somehow fishing became the topic.
Why not?  Anyone can get a coach to talk about strategy and get the same old quotes.  Here, he is talking about his biggest catch, where he fishes and a lot more.
This was so much fun.  I really appreciate Coach Hous giving his time and consideration.  Once again, I have to credit the Chicago Rush organization for continuing to be very accommodating.  The Chicago Rush is one classy and professional organization.  I am not only having fun covering the team, I am proud to be there.

On the Beat with the Chicago Rush at Practice

Earlier this week, I had the opportunity to attend a Chicago Rush practice.  Of course, I jumped at the chance to partake in another aspect of the Rush experience.
I arrived early and was immediately greeted by offensive lineman Steve Edwards.  As documented here previously, Edwards is a fellow Mount Carmel alum and we have talked several times this season.  As I made my way to the practice field, I exchanged greetings with Coach Bob McMillen, quarterback Carson Coffman, receiver Reggie Gray and kicker Jose Martinez.  Upon taking my position at midfield on the sidelines, assistant coach Walt Hausman, Director of Media Relations Jonah Rosenblum and several other players welcomed me.  At the risk of repetition, this is a professional, classy organization.
I watched for two hours, as players warmed up, performed simple drills and eventually had a full 7-on-7 scrimmage.  Being that close to the field always makes me respect the abilities and efforts of these players that much more.
Also, despite being indoors and having huge fans, the temperature was still high, but I did not hear one complaint from anyone.  This team is focused.  Then again, Coach McMillen would have it no other way.
After practice, I joined CBS 2 Chicago's Krista Ruch in a media session with Coach McMillen, Gray, Coffman and quarterback Luke Drone.  The main topics were the big, upcoming game against Arizona, the challenges of the season, the heat and other interesting things.  I admit, CBS Chicago's Krista Ruch asked more questions, but CBS is slightly bigger than JohngysBeat.com.  I had no problem with her taking the lead.  I got my turn every time and together we got some interesting stuff.
The Rush is traveling to Arizona to face the 14-2 Rattlers.  This is a crucial game for the Rush, who are currently tied for 1st in their division, but would lose the tie-breaker at this point.  It is going to be a tough game, but I have faith in the Rush.
I saw the determination from everyone yesterday.  Coach McMillen sets the tone and everyone else is right behind him.  The team looked ready, sharp and confident.
Unfortunately, I will not be in Arizona, but I will be following the game online.  This team deserves our fandom.  They have earned it.  I am in it for the long haul and I encourage everyone to get on the Rush bandwagon now!
Please enjoy the following interviews with Coach McMillen, Coffman, Drone and Gray.  Also, go to ArenaRush.com to follow this team.

On the Beat with Lita Ford at Days of the Dead 2013

Yesterday I wrote about a unbelievable experience courtesy of Lita Ford at Days of the Dead in Indianapolis.  After that awesome performance, I spoke to Lita and got the video below.
Lita has been rocking for a long time, but she still looks and sounds amazing!  How many musicians would even attempt to belt out a full song at a convention like she did?  Truly amazing indeed.
Lita's latest effort is Living Like a Runaway, which pays homage to The Runaways (her first band) and he defense-mechanism of running away at times.  This is a deeply personal project and her passion really shows.
I cannot tell you enough how impressed I was (we all were) with Lita.  I encourage everyone to check out LitaFordOnline.com and to look for Living Like a Runaway on Amazon or iTunes.
I want to publicly thank Lita for her time and consideration and again for that phenomenol performance which I included yesterday.

Lita Ford Live at Days of the Dead

At the recent Days of the Dead convention, I witnessed one of the coolest scenes ever at any such convention.  I have never seen anything like it and I have been to hundreds of conventions.
Cuzz Gekas and I were meandering around as we waited for a couple scheduled interviews.  We were near Lita Ford's table when we saw a fan pull out a guitar.  Much to his surprise (and to the shock of all around), Lita took it, tuned it for about 5 seconds and started playing it.
Lita didn't simply strum a few notes and hand it back to the guy.  Having Lita play your guitar for even mere seconds would have been cool enough.  Instead, Lita went on to play "Close My Eyes Forever" and invited the guy to sing with her.
I have admitted my greatest moments here.  I received a huge bear hug from Roddy Piper when I first met him after a few phone conversations.  I got to interview earlier crushes Lauren Holly, Andrea Evans, PJ Soles and Kelli Maroney.  I have been on Major League fields and in dugouts.  I know how cool those moments were to me.  I can only imagine how this guy felt.
This guy had a once-in-a-lifetime moment courtesy of Lita (and Days of the Dead, too).  I did reach out to him and asked him to contact me for comments, but I have not heard from him yet.  I hope he eventually contacts me.  I would love to get his perspective.
While I was surprised to see Lita do this, I can honestly say I was not shocked.  Days of the Dead promoter Adolfo selects quality people to be celebrity guests and Days is always doing different things.  It is a unique convention.
Below is the clip of the moment.  Can you tell how excited the guy was?  I have to point out something early in the video.  Jake Busey is the celebrity at the next table.  He apparently nudged the fan for whatever reason.  The guy looked like he took a step forward, then jumped right back close to Lita.  He wasn't unnerved enough to take him away from the moment.  That little step back might have made a big difference.  He was cementing himself in this moment.
Look, too, at Lita.  She looks to be having a good time herself.  As I wrote...truly unique.
Finally, after you enjoy this cool video, check out more Lita stuff at LitaFordOnline.com.

Richard Masur Takes It One Day at a Time

Richard Masur is one of those guys.  You have seen him hundreds of times in movies and on television over his forty year career..  He has appeared in many iconic shows and movies.  You immediately know his face when you see him.
I first saw him as David on One Day at a Time.  That was followed by The Thing, Risky Business and countless other roles.  Despite his lengthy and successful career, I always think first of One Day at a Time.  As far as I can tell, that is just fine with him.
Masur is very low-key.  He had a shaved head for an upcoming project, but he was just as interested in talking about The Thing, the convention or anything else.
Masur seemed to get the convention concept.  He was there essentially because off his participation in the Thing (there was a mini-reunion there).  He happily signed pictures and posed for pictures.  He did not cringe when I mentioned One Day at a Time.
Meeting Masur was like shooting back to my teenage years watching One Day at a Time.  Back then, I never imagined one day I would be talking to him.  It is always a bit surreal.  I walked away from Masur feeling really good, almost like a kid again.
Thank you Days of the Dead for another great guest.  Thank you to Masur for certainly more than "one day."

On the Beat with Chris Sarandon at Days of the Dead 2013

Today's featured guest and interview actually had its' origin back in 1984 at DePaul University.  I was a struggling first year student at DePaul.  My grades were below average, I had no direction and the guidance counselors were of no help.  Somehow, I landed in the office of Assistant Dean Lynne Chappel.
It was at this point that things changed dramatically.  Lynne became a friend and mentor throughout the rest of my time at DePaul.  It is no stretch to say that I would not have stayed at DePaul if it wasn't for Lynne.  Actually, I don't know what would have happened to my college career in general, if it wasn't for Lynne.
I saw Lynne help many others, too.  I can easily say that Lynne was by far the most important person in my college career.
Fast forward to last year.  I interviewed actor Chris Sarandon at Days of the Dead in Chicago.  It was a brief intterview, because Sarandon had a long line of fans and the interview was not previously scheduled.  I very much appreciated him giving us any time at all, actually!
A couple weeks later, I received an email from Lynne.  We have stayed in contact over the years.  Lynn was surprised to see me interview Sarandon...her cousin!
When I saw Sarandon would be appearing at Days in Indianapolis, I contacted Lynne and asked her if I could drop her name to Sarandon.  She responded quickly and positively.
At the convention, I approached Sarandon while he was setting up his table.  I mentioned Lynne and he immediately lit up.  (Lynne has that effect on people.)  We talked a bit about how they were related and about how I knew her.  We agreed that Lynne is a real sweetie!  Then he gave us the update interview below.
Sarandon is incredibly nice and has had an amazing career.  Early on, he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Dog Day Afternoon.  His many other films include Fright Night, Child's Play (a personal favorite), The Princess Bride and The Nightmare Before Christmas.  He is currently working on a very interesting and important project, but I will let him tell you about that in the clip below.
I encourage everyone to keep an eye out for Sarandon's project called Not Someone Like Me.  Obviously Sarandon is very serious about the subject matter and the project.  I am sure it is something very special.  I promise to keep everyone updated whenever I hear anything about Not Someone Like Me.
I really want to thank Sarandon for his time and for years of great entertainment.  I also want to thank Lynne for her assistance in this interview and for saving me so long ago.

Friendly Encounters: Eugene Cresto Meets Paul Heyman

This is a regular series about my friends who have met celebrities.

I first saw Eugene Cresto many years at a wrestling show (PCW, I think).  Since then, I have seen him at many other events.  Eugene meets a lot of wrestlers.  I mean A LOT of wrestlers.  In fact, if he had Eugene's Beat, he would far surpass Johngy's Beat in wrestling encounters.
Plus, he meets big name wrestlers in bunches at a time.  I am sure he probably goes to airports or hotels to meet the WWE or TNA talent in large numbers.  Wherever it is and however he does it, he does it well.
I have no problem admitting he has met many people I have not met.  If it was even close, I would be petty enough to be competitive, but it isn't close.  I have no idea how many WWE and TNA stars he has met, but I know it is a large number.
One big name he recently met was Paul Heyman (aka Paul E. Dangerously).  I have been a Heyman fan for many years (dating back to his big phone WCW days).  Heyman is a wrestling genius.  Unfortunately, I hacve never met Heyman.  He is definitely on my Top Ten list of wrestlers I have not met.
Aside from a random convention where I could meet a few big name wrestlers at a time or independent wrestling shows where I can meet a lot of indy stars, I don't get a chance to meet a whole lot of big names in one shot.  Eugene is the master and I bow to the master.
I would also give an open invitation to Eugene to submit a guest column here.  (If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.)  Sure, Eugene can ,ake occasional appearances on Johngy's Beat.  Hey, maybe it will keep him from creating Eugene's Beat and beating me at my own game.

On the Beat with Wyzae Crankfield at Days of the Dead 2013

As you will learn from the video below, Wyzae Crankfield has appeared at many conventions, but somehow I have missed him previous to the recent Days of the Dead con in Indianapolis.  Having met and talked to him, I plan on making sure I catch him at future cons.
I get Wyzae and I like him a lot.  The multi-talented Wyzae is an actor, recording artist and more.  Overall, I classify him as an artist in the true sense of the word.
Wyzae is fascinating.  He is soft-spoken and articulate.  His music is riveting.  He is trying to make a difference, by being different.  As you will hear, he is dark without being negative.  He is creating his own path and doing quite well.
I also learned he will be appearing in a movie with Cleve Hall (whom we interviewed at Wizard World last year).  I love his reaction to appearing with Hall.  Classic.
This is our first interview with Wyzae, but hopefully it will not be the last.  The more I learn about Wyzae, the more interested I am in learning more.
If you want to learn more, check out Wyzae on Facebook and follow Wyzae on twitter.  He is very interactive.  Tell him Johngy sent you.

Heyyy It's the Fonz-o

Earlier in the year, I did some coverage of the Windy City Rollers.  I had a lot of fun with the talented ladies of the track, but I also met some other interesting characters, including Fonzo McKnuckles, the mascot of the Fury.
I have since done some research on Fonzo and discovered that he was hatched from a giant orange egg on St. Valentine's eve, which makes him a fellow Aquarian.  One of his likes is "watching hot chicks on skates beat the hell out of each other while trying to quench in their never ending thirst for blood."  Hmm this Fonzo is smarter than I thought.
Fonzo is just one of the mascots who provide extra entertainment at the Windy City Rollers events.  He works the crowd well.  He is quite active and very animated.  The kids especially love him (and I am just a big kid anyway).
I have not been to see the Rollers in a while due to scheduling conflicts, but I hope to return soon.  As a matter of fact, the perfect time would be the Golden Bowl II on Saturday, July 20 and Sunday, July 21.  For more info on this event, check out WindyCityRollers.com.  I encourage everyone to come out and enjoy some roller derby fun.  I am sure Fonzo would agree.

On the Beat with Linda Blair at Days of the Dead 2013

I admit, as a youngster, The Exorcist scared the heck out of me.  What a great movie and what a great performance by a young teen Linda Blair.  Blair has remained active in the entertainment business ever since, but her most important work might be outside of show business.
Linda was raised to respect animal life and she has chosen to use her notoriety to raise awareness to animal cruelty and rescues.  Thus the Linda Blair WorldHeart Foundation was born.  We caught up with Linda at Days of the Dead in Indianapolis and she gave us a short video on behalf of the LBWHF.  I will let Linda relay that message, but here I want to congratulate Linda and to express my admiration for her efforts.
Linda doesn't need to do celebrity conventions, but she has been doing them for years to spread the word about the LBWHF.  Her appearances are always appreciated by new and old fans.  I have met Linda several times over the years and I keep going back.  Having a chance to talk to Linda for a few moments and having the small donation go to help animals is a winning combination for me.  Judging by the length of her lines at the conventions, I would say I am not alone in that.
When I approached Linda about doing a short promo for the LBWHF, she did not hesitate.  She had never heard of JohngysBeat.com, but she wanted to spread the word on the LBWHF and she knew I would do that.
Linda works tirelessly promoting her cause and helping animals.  This isn't lip service for her.  Linda could charge a lot more for pictures and autographs, but instead, she keeps a low price and gives the proceeds to the Linda Blair WorldHeart Foundation.
After you watch Linda talk about the Linda Blair WorldHeart Foundation, please go to LindaBlairWorldHeart.org to learn more about the great work they do with animals.  Also, "like" the Linda Blair WorldHeart Foundation on Facebook and follow LindaBlairWHF on twitter.

On the Beat with RD Reynolds of Wrestle Crap at Days of the Dead 2013

Oh sure, wrestling fans have complained for years about about crappy storylines.  Did anyone like the Lance Von Erich story?  How about the Yeti?  Of course, the Shock Master is legendary crap.
Yes, a lot of fans complained, joked and mocked those moments in wrestling, however only the guys at Wrestle Crap actually have done something about it.  RD Reynolds co-created Wrestle Crap with the late Merle Vincent.  Wrestle Crap is now run by Reynolds, Blade Braxton and Justin Henry.
There is a Wrestle Crap website.  There have been three books.  There was a podcast (please revive it).  There are still appearances (like at the recent Days of the Dead).  There is the RD and Blade Show.
All of these celebrate wrestling's lowlights.  The KISS demon.  Dink, Wink and Pink.  Claire Lynch.  David Arquette.  Al Wilson.  Katie Vick.  Hornswoggle.  The homeless Mick Foley story.  The Zodiac.  Mae Young's "hand" birth.  Do you want more?
If so, head over to the Wrestle Crap sitte and you will get more.  Much, much more.  Seriously, Wrestle Crap is full of a ton of crappy goodness.
I caught up with RD at Days of the Dead and got the update on what was new in the world of Wrestle Crap.  I also made a plea to have Johngy gain entry into Wrestle Crap.  Come on, RD, I have seen enough first hand.  Of course, you can also go the other way and include Johngy based on the ever present Johngy shirts at various indy wrestling events.  Can I bribe you with a JohngysBeat.com shirt?  Surely that is crap worthy.
Check out WrestleCrap.com for some excellent, crappy wrestling stuff.  You can also find RD Reynolds on Facebook and WrestleCrap on Facebook, along with WrestleCrap on twitter.

On the Beat with Brian Steward at Days of the Dead 2013

Giada lead me to illustrator Brian Steward.  To be honest, Giada could lead me to just about anything, but I digress.
Steward is a fantastic artist.  He has done some 3D art, monsters...wait, I'll use his words..."Illustrator Of Horrifying Things and Sexy Things....and other Thingy Things as well..."  Among all of that, I saw a cool illustration of Giada.
When I first met Steward and talked to him On the Beat with Brian Steward at Days of the Dead 2012,  I asked him about all of his art and Giada, of course.  Unexpectedly (and very much appreciated), he gave me a signed copy of the Giada print.
I apologize, because this isn't about Giada.  It is about a majorly-talented illustrator named Brian Steward (who created a Giada masterpiece).  On the other hand, it is Giada who lead me to Steward.  Therefore, Steward is forever intertwined with Giada (I bet he wouldn't mind being intertwined with her, but I digress again).
Steward is talented and entertaining.  He is a popular guest at conventions.  He is interesting in conversations and interviews.  His art is really fascinating (and not just his Giada creation).
To see Giada...I mean to learn more about Brian, check out BrianSteward.com.  You can also find him on the Brian Steward Facebook page and follow Brian Steward on twitter.

On the Beat with Michael West at Days of the Dead 2013

Mcihael West has authored articles, short stories and books.  I first met him a year ago at Days of the Dead in Indianapolis, West's home state.  I was intrigued by his work.
Upon meeting West, I immediately liked him.  He is personable, interesting and articulate.  After our interview, On the Beat with Michael West at Days of the Dead 2012, I continued to follow his career, including reading Poseidon's Children and Spook House, two of his books.  I enjoyed meeting him, reading his books and following him online.
Of course, I wanted to get an update from him at the recent Days of the Dead in Indy.  West was accommodating as usual.
West is an excellent author and definitely a great guy.  After you watch the interview, I encourage you to check out any of his books.  I am sure you will be as entertained as I have been.
To learn more about this great author, check out ByMichaelWest.com, and the Michael West Facebook page and follow Michael West on twitter.

Friendly Encounters: Sarah French Meets Tyler Mane

This is a regular series about friends who have met celebrities.

I always get a kick out of celebrities wanting pictures with other celebrities at conventions.  Of course, I also get a kick when one of the celebrities is a friend.  Such was the case when Sarah French met Tyler Mane at Flashback Weekend, a great yearly  convention in the Chicago area.
I actually saw Sarah at Wizard World, where her and Joe Knetter were checking out stuff and meeting other celebrities.  Later, they made their way to Flashback Weekend.
I have written many times that I absolutely love Sarah (yes, and Joe, too).  They are two of my very favorites and definitely two of the coolest, nicest celebrities I have met.
Sarah took pictures with several celebrities, but I chose the one with Tyler Mane (actor and former wrestler).  We had interviewed Tyler at some point during the Wizard World convention.  Wow...all of the worlds are colliding here.
At this point, I must also add that Tyler (and Renae Geerlings) were also very nice when we interviewed them.  They graciously gave us several minutes of their time.
In any case, I am always interested to see which celebrity another celebrity grabbed for a photo.  Of course, it is hard to predict which celeb wanted the photo with the other or if it was mutual.
If all of that is confusing, don't worry.  Just look at the lovely Sarah and it will all be better.
As for me, I am hoping to see Sarah (and Joe, too) again sometime this year.  I don't think they will get as big of a thrill from posing with me, but I am sure they will be good sports.  They always are!

Mike Lookinland Stars in Johngy's Surreal Life

Everyone in my age group (actually, all age groups) is familiar with The Brady Bunch.  We all grew up watching it.
Like most shows, the actors seemed far away and so out of our realm.  I would never think that one day I would be meeting so many of these celebrities, let alone having real conversations with them.
Thanks to the celebrity meet-and-greet conventions like Motor City Comic Con, these celebrities are now completely accessible.  How cool is this?!
I have met the three of the Brady kids (Peter, Bobby and Cindy), as well as cousin Oliver.  Barry Williams and Maureen McCormick have done similar shows, so I think I will eventually meet them, too.
This never stops being surreal for me.  I stare at the picture below and think about sitting in my house as a kid and watching Bobby Brady get into all sorts of mischief on the screen.  Larger than life.  Miles away.  A completely different life.
Yet, there we are.  Johngy and Bobby.  John and Mike Lookinland.
Especially cool is that Lookinland was very nice.  He even did a Johngy promo (which is in the right column on this page).  Over the few times I have met him at various cons, we have talked about his life, the conventions and other stuff.  I even witnessed him and Susan Olsen bantering back and forth like, well, like two siblings.  And I was right in the middle of it.
I don't know why I get such a rush from this.  Maybe a psychologist can answer that for me.  Instead, I will just continue to attempt to meet these favorites of mine and continue having a fun time.
Eve Plumb...where are you?

Celebrity Jersey Cards #144 Kelsey Grammer & Nick Jonas

This is a regular series which attempts to combine my lifelong passion for trading cards with my semi-professional interest in celebrities.  Hockey season is over, which means we now only have baseball.  Oh dear.

I want to like Kelsey Grammer more than I do.  I am not sure why I don't like him more.  I loved Cheers,  I enjoyed Frasier.  Sideshow Bob is classic.  He even portrayed the Mayor of Chicago in Boss (which co-starred Kathleen Robertson, who you will soon see here).  It was his role on Boss which lead to his appearance at US Cellular.  I am not sure why he is wearing Luis Aparicio's #11, unless it represents the debut year for Boss.  I do like his Celebrity Jersey Card, but then again, I like most cards which don't show the standard pitching shot.
Unlike Grammer, I found no connection to Chicago for the Dallas native Nick Jonas.  The oldest of the Jonas Brothers probably was just one of the hundreds of celebrities who have sung the 7th inning stretch at Wrigley Field.  I am not a fan of Jonas, but I like that he stepped into the batting cage  It makes for a rare Celebrity Jersey Card action shot.  Notice the incoming pitch on the right edge.

Stacy Haiduk was Super

I first saw Stacy Haiduk when she played Lana Lang on the Superboy television series of the late 1980's.  While even then, I bristled at another show about another superhero instead of Aquaman, my anger was greatly lessened by the lovely Haiduk.
Since then, she has acted regularly in films and on tv.  I have not seen everything she has done, but I have caught her many times,. including during her stay on All My Children, her role in Sketch Artist and more.
When I heard that Haiduk would be at the Motor City Comic Con this year, I put her on my "must meet" list.
Haiduk had a lengthy line and she received an award from some Star Wars group, but I patiently waited.  It was Stacy Haiduk...a few extra minutes would not deter me.
Haiduk was as sweet as could be.  We talked  for a few moments an she even made sure I was satisfied with the picture we took.  I did not get to interview her, but it was still a great experience.
Haiduk has her own site at StacyHaiduk.info, as well as a Stace Haiduk Facebook page and a Stacy Haiduk twitter page.

It All Started with Rick Monday

The title says it all, but what does the "all" encompass?  It all starts in my earliest baseball days and it continues to today.
Starting in the beginning, Rick Monday's 1973 Cubs card is one of the first baseball cards I remember, which is really cool, because Monday is one of the first players I ever remember.
Monday came to the Cubs in a trade for Ken Holtzman, a very successful pitcher.  I really liked Holtzman, but I was excited to see Monday jon the Cubs.  It seemed like a win for both teams.  Monday played five excellent seasons for the lowly Cubs, often being one of the few bright spots.
In 1975,  during a game at Dodger Stadium, Monday made a play that would go down in history.  He saved the flag from protesters who were trying to burn it on the field.  This launched Monday onto the national scene.  Of course, in the current age of coverage, we would have tons of footage.  Now we have a precious few videos and still shots.
In 1977 he was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers for Bill Buckner and Ivan DeJesus.  As much as I hated seeing Monday go, I liked what the Cubs were getting and I was happy Monday was going to a winner.
Fast forward many years and I was looking for interesting pieces to submit to Global Traveler magazine.  My friends and I were going to Los Angeles for our annual baseball trip.  I boldly thought of trying to get press credentials to interview Monday for a story for GT.
I got those credentials and I interviewed Monday, with much assistance from Chuck "Flash" Gekas.  Chuck and I have so many great memories from that scant two hours on the field and in the clubhouse.  It was truly a life highlight.
That story ran online for GT, was read by David Stein on Sporting News Radio and I earned GT's Globility award mostly for that whole series of events.  It also became the impetus for me trying to get more press credentials.  Years later, I have covered several MLB teams, as well as the Chicago Rush, the Chicago Bliss, the Chicago Express and the Chicago Bandits.  Add to that, a few wrestling companies, several celebrity conventions and other fun events.
I am always amazed at the incredible chain of events that started in my youth and continues forty years later. Many people and places played a role, but as I wrote, it all started with Monday.
Happy July 4th to everyone, including Rick Monday, my favorite patriot!

On the Beat with Resistance Pro at Kicks For A Cure

Last Saturday, I had a great time at Kicks For A Cure.  The highlights include Resistance Pro teaming with the New Jersey Grabowskis on the kickball diamond, the event raising over $300,000 and everyone having a lot of fun.  You can read my whole recap at On the Beat with the NJ Grabowskis and Resistance Pro at Kicks For A Cure on the Skokie Patch news site.
This was another example of the amazing experiences I have had and the quality people I have met (and befriended) since I started covering R Pro.  Eric St. Vaughn agreed to help me cover the event and ended up doing double duty as he also played, joining C Red and Barry Ryte.  Gabe, Jacques and Haley Baron were there bright and early to support their guys.
Forget Cosell and Meredith, Caray and Piersall, Foley and Tallon.  Those broadcasting tandems have nothing on Jacques and Gabe.  I was lucky enough to be standing with them as they provided informal play-by-play of the first game.
The R Pro wrestlers were good sports, too.  They had fun in and out of the game, despite their (mostly) lack of productivity.  They even raucously supported me during my one unexpected inning of play, especially when I got a hit and eventually scored.  Will I ever let them live that one down?  Highly unlikely!
Even (or maybe especially) during down time, I had a lot of fun with these guys.  I observed as C Red told some wrestling stories, as ESV picked C Red's wrestling brain a bit and as Barry, C Red and ESV just hung out.  I really shouldn't have said "observed," because I was a participant in all of it.  Not once did they make this non-wrestler feel like an outsider.  In fact, as always, it was quite the opposite.  They are very inclusive.
Below is my official video recap of my day at Kicks For A Cure.  A year ago, I would have left it at that.  Now though, I feel very much a part of the R Pro family and like a good family we poke and jab at each other.  You have to know there are video outtakes and I own all of the video footage.  There will be some stuff put up soon.
If you missed Kicks For A Cure, you can catch the R Pro guys at Stick It To Ya on July 26, in Willowbrook, IL.  I am quite sure you will enjoy C Red, ESV, Barry Ryte and the rest of the R Pro roster as much as I do.
I would like to publicly thank Greg and Chris Olsen, the Receptions for Research Foundation, Kicks For A Cure, Julie Hamm, Jon Heselica and the New Jersey Grabowskis, Resistance Pro and all else involved in this great event.  I also want to thank R Pro once again for making me feel a part of the R Pro family.

Coming Soon: Days of the Dead

In a few days, Cuzz Gekas and I will be heading to Days of the Dead in Indianapolis.  We have been to both previous Days cons in Indy, making this our third Indy Days.  (We have also gone to the one Chicago Days and will be going to the second one later this year.)
Days is a great con, mostly because the main man behind it is Adolfo Dorta and he works his butt off to make sure it is a great con.  He is unlike any convention organizer I have ever met.  He cares so much about the attendees.  He is a constant blur of activity at the con.  I am not sure he even has a moment to enjoy the activities!
I go to a lot of conventions for their guest lists and Days is no exception, but I also go to support Adolfo.  The man is just that good.
I have seen others take shots at Adolfo on Facebook and elsewhere.  Sure, other convention organizers are probably scared of his success.  Right now he has four Days cons (Indy, Chicago, LA and Atlanta), but if all continues to go well, I could see him adding a couple more.  Even if he doesn't expand to other cities, he will most certainly keep improving the ones he has.
Yes, I like Adolfo and yes, other convention organizers should take notice.  He is making a big difference on the convention scene.

Friendly Encounters : "The Ego" Robert Anthony Meets Billy Corgan

This is a regular series about friends who have met celebrities.

I met "The Ego" Robert Anthony at a Resistance Pro event about 18 months ago.  I watched Ego become one of the most popular wrestlers at R Pro and eventually he became the champ (a title he still holds).
Ego has been known to call the R Pro venue "the house that Ego built" and I can't really disagree.  He has consistently put on excellent matches.  His match with John Morrison was worthy of "Match of the Year" honors.  His wrestling skills in the ring seem to be ever-improving and his fanbase is ever-expanding.  Ego is gold!
Earlier this year, Ego posed with Billy Corgan, R Pro's Creative Director, at a Bulls game.  Ego is a big Chicago sprts fan and can be seen wearing various Chicago jerseys.  He is an ideal candidate for a Celebrity Jersey Card and his day will come.
Don't just take my praise for fact.  Come out to an R Pro event and see for yourself.  In fact, on Friday, July 27, you can watch an R Pro show in Willowbrook.  Go to ResistancePro.com for all of the details.
