Friend Encounters: Sgt. Slaughter and Josh Watko

This is a weekly series about friends who have met celebrities.

I first came across Josh Watko's JW's Wrestling Memorabilia site many years ago. Josh wrote about wrestling figures and other wrestling-related stuff. He also occasionally veered into other pop culture fun.
Josh was one of the first people I ever saw who consistently met and wrote about meeting wrestlers. He has met so many wrestlers past and present, including many that I haven't met. I am envious of that, but happy for him, because he is a great fan of the business. As evident in the picture below with Sgt. Slaughter, Josh started at a very early age.
I have followed Josh's work over the years and took special note of his "Joshie" awards. At the end of every year, Josh presented his "Joshie" awards, including a "Thanks for the Memories" award, given to such luminaries as Lance Russell, Chyna, Dusty Rhodes, Roddy Piper and The Ultimate Warrior.
When I first read his "Joshie" awards presentation, I thought it was such a cool idea. His award categories and reasoning behind winning selections made the awards special. Anyone can just give out awards, but a "Joshie" had real meaning.
I write this in all honesty. Josh's site is so well written, that it stands out in a sea of sites on the internet. He is talented, clever, insightful and entertaining.
One year, I mentioned that my goal was to win a "Joshie" award. Was it fair of me to campaign for that honor? I wrote about my goal and I hope to legit earn the award. I figured Josh would get a laugh and maybe have some fun with it, but I never actually thought I would win the award.
As I made my regular stop on his site this morning, I saw "The Winds of Change" as his newest entry. I was surprised to see my picture with Gene Okerlund accompanying the story. As I read the piece, I was even more surprised to see Josh name me as the 2018 "Thanks for the Memories" Joshie award winner.
When I look back at the previous winners, I see wrestling Hall of Famers. While I never expected to win a "Joshie" award, this particular award is even more special. At best, I thought Josh might create some unofficial award for me, just for the fun of it. I never expected to win a legit and established "Joshie" award.
I sincerely appreciate this award and will do my best to continue to live up to it's legacy. Being recognized by one of the best internet writers is very cool.
As the title of his piece indicated, Josh is changing things a bit on his site. He is moving away from the weekly format, but he promises to continue to be an internet presence, as well as a familiar face on the wrestling scene. I'll miss his weekly offerings, but I look forward to his future musings whenever they appear. Josh promises more fun, just in a less structured format.
He also teased a book. Can that be a legit possibility? If anyone could do it, I'd say Josh would be the one. I'd buy his book in a heartbeat. Actually, I would wait for him to do a signing. Then Joshie and Johngy could finally meet.
Until then, Josh, thank you for the memories and looking forward to more Josh fun in the future.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #407 Aubrie Lemon & Lisa Gleave

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a regular series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebs wearing sports jerseys. TV's Deal Or No Deal is enjoying a rebirth, but without most of the models from yesteryear, two of whom are featured here.

Aubrie Lemon might have stood by the most different numbered briefcases on DOND. After being the briefcase #23 model in the first season, she switched numbers several times substituting for other models during the next few seasons. Lemon has done some acting and is also qualified for Mensa membership. On her Celebrity Jersey Card, Aubrie represented the Indianapolis Cplts and was joined by former Pittsburgh Steelers QB Kordell Stewart. She is wearing #23 (to match her briefcase), most notably worn by Frank Gore.
Lisa Gleave represented briefcase #3 during her run on DOND. For the special NFL edition DOND, she represented the Oakland Raiders and wore #3, most notably worn by Daryle Lamonica or more recently by Carson Palmer. Gleave is joined by former New York Jets WR Wayne Chrebet. Like many of the DOND models, Gleave also has ventured into acting.

Deadgar Winter Loves Johngy's Beat

Recently, I had the pleasure of interviewing Deadgar Winter. That interview can be found at On the Beat With Deadgar Winter and Celeste at Chicago Pop Culture Con 2018. After that interview, Deadgar was kind enough to give a shout out to Johngy's Beat.
You can go to Deadgar's site for a lot of cool stuff, including episodes, merchandise and other fun. You can also follow Deadgar's Dark Coffin Classics on Facebook for news and updates.

Tai Emery Loves Johngy's Beat

My coverage of the Legends Football League usually focuses on the Chicago Bliss, but today, I am featuring Tai Emery, a former LFL star player for the Queensland Brigade (Australia), the Las Vegas Sinn and the Los Angeles Temptation.
An all-star and one of the most popular players in the LFL, Tai has also done some modeling. More recently she shifted gears and started training for MMA.
Last year, Tai was kind enough to send a shout out to us here at Johngy's Beat. While doing cleanup on my files, I realized I had not featured this promo video yet. Tai's voice needs to be heard and her fans always are happy with more Tai!
With her charisma, athleticism and dedication, I have no doubt that Tai will do well in whatever field she chooses. I am sure we will be seeing more of Tai in the future and I will certainly cover her career as it continues to develop.
We thank Tai for her kindness and we wish her well. Be sure to follow Tai Emery on Twitter.

Kevin Matthews Loves Johngy's Beat

Earlier this year, we interviewed Chicago radio legend Kevin Matthews. Kev talked to us about his career, his battle with MS, the Broken Mary project and much more. You can watch the 2 part interview at HeroTV 2018 Episode 5: Kevin Matthews Part 1 and HeroTV 2018 Episode 6: Kevin Matthews Part 2.
I was a regular listener to Kev and a confirmed KevHead. I enjoyed his show and his comic appearances around the area. Kev has had a great career, but unfortunately radio changed. He eventually moved back to Grand Rapids, Michigan and has keep busy. His life took a sad turn when he was diagnosed with MS, but it took a beautiful turn when he found the Broken Mary, which would be such a huge part of his life since.
I really appreciate Kev for his time and his years of entertainment. You can learn more about Kev at BrokenMary.com and on the Kevin Matthews page on Steve Dahl's site.

John Kassir Loves Johngy's Beat

John Kassir has had a long and successful career. He has worked steadily for over 20 years as an actor, voice actor and comedian. While he is probably best known for being the voice of The Crypt Keeper on HBO's Tales From the Crypt, he first got national exposure in 1985 on Star Search, where he defeated Sinbad for best stand-up comic.
I met Ksssir at a previous Days of the Dead, but spent more time with him at the recent DotD last month. Kassir delighted fans all weekend. You never knew when that Crypt Keeper fellow would join the conversation. He was a great celebrity guest and a really cool guy.
At the end of the weekend, Kassir was kind enough to give us a Johngy's Beat promo. Of course, the Crypt Keeper was part of the fun.
Thank you John and thank you to Days of the Dead for another great convention. The next Days is in Atlanta on January 25-27. Check DaysoftheDead.com for more info.

Good Bye and Good Luck Sammy Marshall, Shelby Turnier and Emily Carosone of the Chicago Bandits

The softball world and Bandit Nation was stunned on Saturday, December 15, when the Chicago Bandits announced a trade. Sammy Marshall, Shelby Turnier and Emily Carosone had been traded to the Cleveland Comets for Jenna Willey, cash and a draft pick.
Like most softball fans, I never saw this coming. I had noticed that Sammy and Shelby had started a new company with former teammate Kristen Brown. Sammy and Shelby had only recently been announced as the trainers at the newly created Bandit Academy. Despite that situation, I never thought either of them (or Emily) would be traded.
I thought Sammy was a lifer with the organization. She grew up in Naperville, starred at Western Illinois, was a drafted by the Bandits and grew into a star. She also was a team leader on and off the field. Her family was present at every game and function. It seemed like the perfect situation.
A native of Florida, Shelby was drafted by the Bandits and asserted herself as one of the best pitchers in the NPF last season. Her gritty and unexpectedly fantastic performance in the 2016 playoffs earned her legend status. Her parents were frequent visitors at the park, despite still living in Florida.
Not to be lost in all of this is Emily. Also a Florida native, Emily starred at Auburn, before being drafted by the Bandits. She was among the league leaders in several categories, while playing a solid 2nd base. Like the others, Emily's family supported her and the team.
There you have three great players and that is not just an adjective I tossed lightly. Sammy, Shelby and Emily are premiere players. In addition to that, they are class acts on and off the field.
I have had many chats and interviews with these three and I was always impressed with their maturity. Fortunately, I told them and their parents the same thing many times. This isn't hindsight. I always spoke highly of these three.
I feel bad for Jenna, too. She didn't ask to be traded. She is in the middle of a shocking trade. Fortunately, I know Bandit Nation will embrace her quickly as one of their own.
What caused this trade? How could this trade be good for the Bandits? How has Bandit Nation reacted and how will they continue to respond?
Eric Lopez of Fastpitch News invited me on the In the Circle podcast to address these questions and to talk about the players involved. That podcast can be found at Rachel Lawson, Rule Changes, Kentucky Softball and NPF Trade News.
I understand trades and departures are part of sports. Michael Jordan left the Bulls. Monica Abbott left the Bandits. Those were choices by the players though. This trade seems unwanted by all except the management of both teams.
With all of that being as is, the Bandits will go on. As stated, Monica left and the Bandits still won a championship. The Bandits have plenty of talented players and someone will step up on and off the field. As fans and even as a beat reporter, we don't know everything involved. Whatever the reasons, the Bandits' management felt this trade was needed. We might not like it, but we must accept it.
GM Toni Calmeyn has done a fine job with this team. She took over when things looked bleak. She has led the effort to promote the team. She is at every game, facing the fans and I expect she will continue to do so.
As fans, we cheer for the team. We will always love Sammy, Shelby and Emily, just like we love Monica, Taylor Edwards, Brittany Cervantes, Amanda Kamekona, Megan Wiggins and all of the other Bandits who have gone elsewhere to play for whatever reason. Bandit Nation has a unique relationship with players, past and present (as I also discuss on the podcast). I am sure Sammy, Shelby and Emily will get a warm reception whenever they play in Rosemont. In the end though, we will still be cheering for the Bandits.
I was already looking forward to the season, but now it got just a bit more interesting. Go to ChicagoBandits.com for more info and news on the team. You can also check here, as I will once again be covering the Bandits.
Thank you to Sammy, Shelby and Emily for all they did here. Thanks for their friendship and for always having time to talk in and out of interviews. Thanks to them and their families for the support over the years. Good luck with the Comets. Merry Christmas Comets fans. Enjoy these three gifts!

HeroTV 2018 Episode 12: Eric Soderholm Part 1

Eric Soderholm was one of my first favorite players, despite playing for the Minnesota Twins, rivals of the Chicago White Sox. Eric suffered a devastating knee injury late in the 1975 season and missed all of 1976. In late '76, he was the first free agent to sign with the Sox.
Eric was named the 1977 American League Comeback Player of the Year and had another solid season in 1978. It was cool seeing Eric play here in Chicago.
Unfortunately, he was traded to the Texas Rangers during the 1979 season and then traded to the New York Yankees after the season. After one season with the Yankees, he retired. After his playing career ended, Eric did some scouting and owned a ticket broker company.
Eventually, Eric and his family opened SoderWorld Wellness Center. Earlier this month, as part of our HeroTV show, Paul Myers and I visited Eric at SoderWorld. I wrote about that experience for Global Traveler at Peace, Prosperity, Joy and Abundance at SoderWorld.
Immediately as we walked to the entrance, Paul and I both remarked at how peaceful the area was. It seemed the perfect place for a "body, mind and spirit sanctuary," as SoderWorld'promises. Despite the recent snow and cold front, I could see how beautiful the setting was. I can only imagine how wonderful it is in warmer times.
Eric was very gracious and accommodating. He answered all of our questions and gave us an interesting interview. It was great to learn about Eric's views on life and to see him genuinely at peace.I couldn't help but be drawn into his spirit.
Especially at this time of year, it is good to focus on the important things in life. Eric doesn't promise that SoderWorld will bring you a peaceful state of mind, but it will lead you on that path. Just being there already made me feel calmer.
I plan on returning to SoderWorld, specifically in the summer. I want to walk through the "Garden of Eden," as Eric calls it. I want to see the area in full bloom.
You can watch HeroTV 2018 Episode 12: Eric Soderholm Part 1 on the HeroTV YouTube channel. Also, check out HeroTV on Comcast.
Thank you to Eric for his time and consideration. It was a pleasure meeting him and learning about his career and SoderWorld. Go to SoderWorldWellness.com for more info. Also check SoderWorld on Facebook for news and updates.

Friendly Encounters: Dave Krieg and Tony Feddeler

Friendly Encounters is a regular series in which I feature friends who have met celebrities.

I am not even sure where I first met Tony Feddeler. It was either at a wrestling show, a comic con or at a Chicago Bandits game. That narrows it right down. In any case, we crossed paths many times over the years.
Tony is a big fan of the Seattle Seahawks. When I saw that former Seahawks quarterback Dave Krieg was appearing at the PopCon Milwaukee, I knew that Tony would make the trek to see him.
Krieg played football at Milton College, a now defunct school in Wisconsin. He was signed by the Seahawks as a free agent, joining the team in 1980 as Jim Zorn's backup. He is one of only 2 Milton alums (former Seahawks defensive end Dave Kraayeveld is the other). Krieg went on to have a 19 year career, including 12 seasons with the Seahaeks. Krieg also played one season with the Chicago Bears.
Tony was excited to meet Krieg, stating such along with posting the picture on Facebook. Tony is wearing a Seahawks tshirt which depicts the 12th man, a Seahawks tradition. I'd bet Krieg was happy to see such a big Seahawks fan, too.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #406: Paul McCartney & Kid Rock

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a regular series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebs wearing sports jerseys. Today we feature a couple of musicians.

Paul McCartney needs no introduction. Still performing more than 50 years after BeatleMania exploded on the music scene, Sir Paul is one of the all-time greatest. While I would have preferred seeing him in a Bears jersey, I am happy enough havinghim get a Celebrity Jersey Card. Paul is wearing #1, which is appropriate.
Robert James Ritchie rose to fame as Kid Rock. Born in Michigan, he has remained true to his roots on this Celebrity Jersey Card. He is wearing #26, which has been worn by many Lions, but no standouts. I'd choose former Bears coach Dick Jauron.

Allazia Blockton and the Marquette Golden Eagles

Allazia Blockton is a senior guard on the Marquette Golden Eagles women's basketball team. The native of Milwaukee, WI was highly recruited during her high school career at Domican, where she scored more than 2,000 points.
Since arriving at Marquette, Allazia has racked up quite a few honors. She was the 2015-16 Big East Freshman of the Year and a second team Big East Selection. In 2016-17, she was a unanimous Big East first team selection. Last season she earned many honors, including Big East Player of the Year, a unanimous Big East first team selection and Big East Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award. She has also been a Big East All-Academic selection every year.
At Media Day, Coach Carolyn Kieger stated big things were expected of Allazia this season and she has been living up to the expectations. Allazia has started all 11 games this season and is third on the team with minutes played (289). She averages 18.6 points per game to lead the team, while chipping in with 33 steals, 46 rebounds, 2 blocked shots and 10 steals. She is 2nd on the team in shooting percentage (.512) and 4th on team team in 3 point percentage (.412)
The Golden Eagles are 9-2 on the season, good for 1st place in the Big East Conference. They have outscored opponents 943-646 and have similarly large advantages in virtually every statistical  category. Their domination is a great sign, although they have yet to play a conference game. Still, once conference play starts, there is no reason to think this will change much.
This team is loaded with talent. This team knows how good it can be and wants to avenge their championship game loss of last season.
You can get more info on the Golden Eagles at GoMarquette.com. You can also check here for recurring coverage.

Happy Birthday Jim!

Today I celebrate the birthday of Jim, the second Gekas brother having a birthday this month. It's only chronological though, lest brother Chuck forever tout that his birthday feature comes first. Yes, we are all that petty, although Jim claims it is only because Chuck and I draw him into our world of pettiness.
Today isn't about pettiness. It is about featuring a dear, long time friend who was born on this date  just a month or so before I appeared on this planet. (Ooops, there I go with pettiness again.)
Petty or not, Jim is a great person. He's been like a brother to me. I am very fortunate in that I have a handful of friends I know will always have my back and Jim is certainly at the front of that line. I think (and hope) he knows I return that sentiment.
We've had many serious discussions and probably more silly ones, but they are always entertaining to me. We've had a lot of great times over the years. We've closed down a few buffets along the way, too.
Ever humble Jim isn't much for the spotlight. He doesn't make a big deal about his birthday. Still, I say, aww come on Jim, whoop it up today. You deserve it.
Happy birthday Jimmy. Enjoy your day!

Svengoolie Rich Koz Loves Johngy's Beat

Earlier this year, PL Myers and I interviewed Rich Koz for HeroTV. The man behind the legendary horror host Svengoolie, Koz is an icon in and out of Chicago. You can watch the full interview at HeroTV 2018 Episode 11: Svengoolie Rich Koz.
It was a thrill to interview Rich. Heck it was cool just being on the set. After watching Sven for 40 years, it blows my mind thinking I am now friends with him. He truly is one of the nicest people I have ever met.
After our interview, Rich was kind enough to do a promo for Johngy's Beat. I really appreciate Rich for doing this and for so many great years of entertainment.
Be sure to check out Svengoolie.com for more info on Sven and Rich. Be sure to check out MeTV for Sven and other fine entertainment.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #405 Robert DeNiro & Sylvester Stallone

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a regular series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebs wearing sports jerseys.

Legendary actor Robert DeNiro was born in New York City, NY. It was his role in Silver Linings Playbook that earned him this Celebrity Jersey Card. He portrayed the father to Bradley Cooper's character and he was a huge fan of the Eagles in the movie. The #66 is for Bill Bergey, former star linebacker.
Actor Sylvester Stallone was also born in New York City New York, but because of his iconic Rocky franchise, he will always be associated with Philadelphia. His Celebrity Jersey Card shows him wearing a #22 jersey. Stallone played some running back in his amateur days, but linebacker Sidney Jones is the latest to wear that number for the Eagles.

Happy Birthday Dave!

Today I celebrate the birthday of my brother-in-law Dave. He would probably prefer a Domino's pizza, but since Domino's doesn't sponsor Johngy's Beat, the best I can do for now is to feature him here.
Over the last few years, Dave has developed quite an acting career. I don't think he has an IMDB page yet, but he is on his way. The picture below was taken at Cinespace Chicago Film Studios, one of his homes away from home. I should get "On the Beat" and interview him on location some day, but he might be too big for me.
At least in his regular life, Dave always has time for me. He has helped me immensely over the years and is always good for a lively debate on many topics (including our long-running pizza debate).
We may disagree on pizza, but we have had a lot of fun over the years. I appreciate all he has done and his friendship. I lovehim like a brother (a brother who likes bad pizza, but a brother nonetheless..Hey, more good pizza for me, anyway).
Happy birthday, Dave. I hope Nancy takes you out to Domino's for a feast.

Friendly Encounters: Lauren Lappin & Chris Bejcek

Friendly Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

Lauren Lappin was a softball pitching star at Stanford Universoty. She went on to win a silver medal in the 2008 Olympics. She also played in the National Pro Fastpitch league with the USSSA Pride and the Pennsylvania Rebellion.
One time when the Rebellion were in town, Chicago Bandits longtime fan Chris Bejcek wore a special jersey for his picture with Lappin. Chris dug into his closet and pulled out his old softball jersey. I like the concept. It's a pair of 37's!
Chris is usually on the other side of the camera. he takes hundreds of pictures and we all appreciate his efforts.
The offseason has barely started and I already miss the Bandits and my friends at the ballpark. The 2019 season is only about 8 months away though. I already am looking forward to it!

Teller in Las Vegas

Raymond Joseph Teller is the silent partner in the magic entertainment duo of Penn & Teller. Actually, his legal name is now the mononym "Teller," having legally changed it.
Teller began performing with his friend Weir Chrisemer in the early 1970's. He met Penn Gillette in 1974 and he joined the duo to form a trio. In 1981, Penn and Teller started to perform exclusively together.
His trademark silence stems from his early days performing when he discovered that the audience paid more attention to his act, if he didn't talk. While almost always silent, Teller has spoken a few times on stage or in television shows and movies, most notably on tv's Penn & Teller: Fool Us.
Teller is a master of sleight-of-hand. He is probably the better technical magician of the pair, with Penn being more theatrical and involving more aspects of entertainment.
After their shows in Las Vegas, the duo meets and greets all fans. They usually pose separately and Teller actually takes his selfies himself.
I wrote about our experience online for Global Traveler at Penn & Teller at the Rio. In case you missed it, yesterday I featured Penn on Johngy's Beat.

Penn in Las Vegas

I have been a fan of Penn and Teller for a long time. When it was decided that our group was going to the Penn & Teller show in Las Vegas, I immediately was in on it. Then I found out there was a meet and greet for all after the show and I was really excited.
Penn and Teller are elite magicians, but they are also irreverent and highly entertaining. They have performed together since 1975. They have had success on stages all over the world, including their current residency at the Rio. They have had a successful television show and a run on Broadway. They have done all there is to do, yet they keep doing more.
Penn Jillette graduated from Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Clown College. He has incorporated those skills into the act many times. That shouldn't misdirect anyone (to use Jillette's phrasing). His magic skills are elite. If I had to split hairs, I would say Teller is more of a master of sleight-of-hand, while Penn is more of the overall entertainer. Together, they are magic (pun intended).
Immediately after the show ended, Jean and Sam raced to the back to lock in our positions to meet the duo. They are the best! They knew I really wanted to meet Penn and Teller and they assisted big time in that effort.
Penn was very friendly and coordinated the fan pictures, as there was no real line. It went smoothly and pretty quickly.
I resisted the urge to ask about his red fingernail. It wasn't really the right situation to get into that. I was happy to end on a high note with my pictures safely in hand.
I wrote about our experience online for Global Traveler at Penn & Teller at the Rio. Tomorrow, I feature Teller here.

At the recent Chicago Pop Culture Con, I had the pleasure of interviewing Deadgar Winter and Celeste Parker of Deadgar's Dark Coffin Classics. The "Or Else" Podcast: Mad Man Pondo and Khloe

I usually do interviews "On the Beat"  at The Resistance, but at Silent Night, Deadly Night, I was joined by Tommy Else, as we interviewed Mad Man Pondo and Khloe for The "Or Else" Podcast. It was a fun change of pace.
I have done over 1,000 interviews, including more than 100 with wrestlers. I have to admit I was a bit nervous and excited the first time I interviewed Pondo. The man has a well-earned hardcore reputation. I had seen many videos of his insane matches. I have to say that Pondo couldn't have been any more accommodating. It was a great experience.
Over the years, I got to watch him up close and interview him several more times. It was always a pleasure being around Pondo. In the ring, he is every bit a "Mad Man," but outside the ring, he is a total class act.
As you will see in the video, Pondo is also very humble. I have seen him guide many young wrestlers, lend advice to bookers and generally help in any way he can. He is a consummate professional.
Tommy and I wanted to get Pondo's thoughts on his experience in RPro, but we also wanted to discuss his book and other things. Since we couldn't do it on the podcast, we talked to him when he cam to Chicago to wrestle for The Resistance. Having Khloe join us was a bonus.
Pondo discussed his start in RPro, hardcore matches and other fun stuff, most notably Memoirs of a Mad Man, his recently released autobiography. We also got Khloe's take on teaming with the hardcore legend, as well as her thoughts on hardcore matches and her career.
Memoirs of a Mad Man contains the story of Pondo in all its bloody glory! It's all in there, the good, the bad, the ugly and of course, the bloody! Pondo has had quite a career in wrestling and an interesting life in general. Pondo tells it straight, like always.
Tommy and I weren't just interviewers though. We were both customers of Memoirs of a Mad Man. We wanted to wait to get one directly from him and signed.
We really appreciate Pondo and Khloe for their time and consideration. I have a ton of respect for Pondo and am grateful for his friendship. Although Khloe is relatively new to wrestling, she is off to a great start and has a promising future.
Be sure to check out The "Or Else" Podcast on Soundcloud for our thoughts on this and other things related to Tommy's experience at RPro, as well as The Resistance. Also, check out all of my interviews on the Johngy's Beat YouTube channel. Lastly, follow Pondo on Facebook and buy his book.

On the Beat With Steve Michaels at Chicago Pop Culture Con 2018

At the recent Chicago Pop Culture Con, I had the pleasure of finally meeting Steve Michaels. While he has wrestled all around the area, I have not seen him in person due to scheduling conflicts. It was great to finally connect with Steve.
The interview started off a bit ominously as Steve implied a threat of his trademark "Chicago Bear Hug" if the interview didn't go well. Fortunately, I kept the interview positive and I remained uninjuured.
In reality, Steve is a super nice guy. When I contacted him weeks before the event, he graciously accepted my interview request. Upon meeting him at Chicago Pop Culture Con, Steve told me I could stop by anytime and we could get it done. He was as accommodating as could be.
A lot of people call themselves wrestlers, but Steve is the definition of a wrestler. This isn't a weekend thing for him. Wrestling is his full-time gig and he is busting his butt and having fun with it.
In the interview below, we talk about his start in wrestling, his career, his dream opponent and more. His dream opponent is especially interesting to me. He selected a big man, which makes sense because it would be a bruiser of a match. On the other hand, as I asked him, could he get his "Chicago Bear Hug" around that opponent?
Steve certainly embraced Chicago in his career. Naming his signature move "Chicago Bear Hug" also makes total sense. Plus, I love the concept of a bear hug being used. It's old school in the new era. It's pure Chicago.
Talking to Steve was a lot of fun. I look forward to actually seeing him wrestle soon. I will report back on that right here when it happens. Either way, I will continue following Steve's career and I encourage all to do so, too.
Follow Steve at @ChicagoBearHug on Facebook to get news and updates. You can also follow Steve at @ChicagoBearHug on twitter and @ChicagoBearHug on Instagram. You can also get Steve's merchandise at Pro Wrestling Tees. For some real entertainment, be sure to catch Steve wrestling somewhere.
Thank you to Steve for his time and consideration (and for not putting me in the Chicago Bear Hug). Thanks to Tim Zurko of Zurko Promotions for facilitating this and the other interviews at Chicago Pop Culture Con.

On the Beat With John Borowski at Chicago Pop Culture Con 2018

I met filmmaker John Borowski several years ago at a convention in Chicago. I found his focus fascinating and figured it would make for an interesting interview. That interview led to several more, while I followed his projects and formed a friendship with him.
John is an independent filmmaker, producer, author, historian and more. He has made films about HH Holmes, Albert Fish, Carl Panzram, Vincent Castiglia and more. He is also the creative force behind Serial Killer Culture TV, an episodic show featuring interviews with people involved in the serial killer culture community.
At first glance, this might seem macabre or even sensationalistic, but I always stress the point that John's work, while entertaining, is about history and education. John's approach is to learn and share that knowledge. I might belabor this point, but I think it is a major point that needs to be made.
I get asked about John and I am sure he gets some of the same questions, but all you have to do is see his work or talk to him and you will see how informative his productions are. In no way does he glorify his subject matter. He digs in deep and personal and unearths information crucial to the cases, as well as helpful in future situations. John is brave enough to tackle and present this subject matter and I will always support him.
Bloodlines: The Art and Life of Vincent Castiglia is one of his most recent projects. Castiglia paints in human blood, stirring emotions and thoughts rrom the viewer. What is behind Castiglia's art? What path did Castiglia take to get to this point? Why use human blood? These questions and so many more are answered in John's documentary. It's beautiful, sad, emotional and a roller coaster ride of other emotions. John's presentation is amazing.
I am proud to be a friend and supporter of John. I continue to look forward to more fantastic work from John, as well as years of friendship.
Go to JohnBorowski.com for more info and news on John and his projects. You can also follow John Boroski on Facebook.
Thank you to John for his time and consideration, but especially for lots of entertainment and his friendship. Thanks, too, to Tim Zurko of Zurko Promotions for the hospitality at Chicago Pop Culture Con and for facilitating this and the other interviews there.

Friendly Encounters: Jonathan Frakes and Josh Watko

Friendly Encounters is a weekly series featuring my friends who have met celebrities.

Josh Watko is the master behind JW's Wrestling Memorabilia, but he is not a one trick pony. Wrestling might be his strength, but it isn't his only passion.
Josh has gone several times to Steel City Con, a big comic con in Pennsylvania. At the 2017 Steel City Con, Josh met Jonathan Frakes. With a career spanning more than 30 years, Frakes has had a lot of great roles in successful projects, but he might be best remembered as Commander William Riker in the Star Trek franchise. Some folks might recognize him as the husband of longtime daytime actress Genie Francis. Either way, Josh made sure to meet Frakes.
You might not find Frakes on Josh's website, but you will find lots of fun stuff. He discusses wrestling memorabilia old and new, as well as all sorts of other wrestling-related topics. At the end of every year, he also presents his Joshie Awards. It has long been a goal of mine to win a Joshie. I don't even know if there would be a suitable category, but he is in charge and could create one. I don't want it to be a pity Joshie (although I would take that anyway). I do think I do enough wrestling coverage to merit some consideration. Certainly my occasional praise of Josh and his site must help my cause. Maybe I could be in a promotional category? Just a thought.
Anyway, check out Josh's site, especially if you are a wrestling fan. You can see his other pictures (like the one with Frakes) on his social media account or possibly here, as I occasionally feature him (even if I never win the long-desired Joshie!).

Happy Birthday Chuck!

Today, I celebrate the birthday of my dear friend Chuck. I usually exchange good-natured barbs with him, but today, I will be (mostly) kind to him.
I've known Chuck for 23+ years. Over the years, Chuck has become one of my best friends. He's been a mentor, therapist, supporter, friend and more. He's like the older brother I never had.
Chuck's positive outlook has made me try to look at things more positively, too. Knowing and learning from Chuck has made me a better worker and person.
It always warms my heart to see Chuck and his family. It's obvious that his (long-suffering) wife, three daughters, three son-in-laws and five grandchildren all love him dearly. I have had the pleasure of being around them many times, including at their recent Northwestern tailgate. They always make me feel like part of the family.
I am sure his family is honoring him with a birthday celebration, but I always like to take this day to express my appreciation. Happy birthday, my friend!
Borrowing a line of Chuck's, he looks good for a 70 year old. That's a backhand long-running joke, but the reality is that he will still look good for a 70 year old when he does reach that milestone many years from now.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #404 Joe Hennig & Celeste Bonin

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a regular series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebs wearing sports jerseys. Today, we combine wrestling with football.

Joe Hennig is a third generation pro wrestler. His grandfather was Larry "the Axe" Hennig and his father was the last "Mr. Perfect" Curt Hennig. Joe has not achieved the level of success as they did, but he is a one time Intercontinental champ and a 2 time tag team champ in the WWE. He donned his home town Minnesota Vikings jersey for his Celebrity Jersey Card. He was also joined by felow wrestlers Cesaro and Sheamus. Although not visible in this shot, Cesaro wears #80, while Hennig and Sheamus wear #17.
Starting her career as a fitness model, Celeste Bonin gained fame in the WWE as Kaitlyn. She was the winner of NXT for the third season and she also won the Divas title once. A native of Houston, TX and now a resident of California, Bonin wore the #52 Ray Lewis jersey of the Baltimore Ravens for her Celebrity Jersey Card.

On the Beat With Deadgar Winter and Celeste at Chicago Pop Culture Con 2018

I am a fan of horror hosts. With so many of them all over the country, it is hard to stand out. Deadgar Winter has established himself as an excellent horror host.
Deadgar’s Dark Coffin Classics is a horror/comedy show airing in Wisconsin and other parts f the country. Hosted by Deadgar with Celeste Parker and Maleva Ravic, it has been entertaining fans for about 6 years. As Deadgar and Celeste explain in the interview below, they feature horror films, while welcoming rock bands, authors, artists and other interesting folks to their show. It's a unique approach and one that separates them from the average horror film show.
At the recent Chicago Pop Culture Con, I had the pleasure of interviewing Deadgar and Celeste. We talked about their show, their favorite horror movies, their new hot sauce and more. It was a lit of fun talking to these two.
How does a line of hot sauces fit in with a horror show? Who really cares, because the sauce is very good. You might say it is horrifically awesome. There are a few different sauce options and I think I tasted and enjoyed all of them at the Chicago Pop Culture Con.
Check out our interview, then check out the show and the hot sauce. The show will entertain you and the hot sauces will delight you.
Go to Deadgar's Dark Coffin Classics on Facebook to learn more about this horror show and Deadgar, Celeste and Maleva. Also, check out ZurkoPromotions.com for info and updates on future events.
Thank you to Deadgar and Celeste for their time and consideration, as well as years of entertainment. Thanks to Tim Zurko of Zurko Promotions for the hospitality and for facilitating this and other interviews.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #403 LeAnn Rimes & Carrie Underwood

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a regular series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebs wearing sports jerseys.

Born in Jackson, MS, LeAnn Rimes rose to fame on the country charts, before going more mainstream. Rimes never abandoned her country roots though. She showed her loyalty to Nashville by donning the Tennessee Titans jersey for her National Anthem performance, earning her a Celebrity Jersey Card in the process. Kicker Ryan Succop is the latest (and current) Titan to wear that number.
Carrie Underwood was born in Oklahoma. She rose to fame on American Idol, winning the 4th season in 2005. She has gone on to a very successful career. She sang the National Anthem at a Jacksonville Jaguars game and earned her Celebrity Jersey Card. Surprisingly, #12 has only been worn by 5 Jaguars during 13 seasons. Wide receiver Dede Westbrook is the latest (and current) Jaguar to wear #12.

On the Beat With Jim Morrissey at Chicago Pop Culture Con 2018

When I signed on to cover the recent Chicago Pop Culture Con, former Chicago Bears linebacker Jim Morrissey was one of my main interview targets. Thanks to the hospitality of Tim Zurko of Zurko Promotions and Mark Childers, Morrissey's appearance agent, I was able to accomplish that goal.
After an excellent career at Michigan State, Morrissey was selected by the Bears in the 11th round of the 1985 NFL draft. He went on to play 9 seasons in the NFL, all with the Bears except for a handful of games with the Green Bay Packers in his last season.
Unfortunately for Morrissey, in his rookie season, the Bears were loaded with linebackers. Otis Wilson, Wilbur Marshall and Mike Singletary were 3 of the best at the time. The positive is that the Bears won the Super Bowl in his rookie season. Morrissey did see plenty of playing time and responded with excellent play, like his interception in the Super Bowl. He became a starter in his 4th season. and remained a starter for most of the games through his 8th season.
His tenure with the Bears ended midway through the 1993 season. He signed with the rival Packers and actually returned to Soldier Field for a game against the Bears. He retired after the '93 season.
Morrissey looked to be in great shape at the Chicago Pop Culture Con. He was in great spirits as he mingled with all of the fans. He enjoyed seeing and signing all of the cool memorabilia brought by the many fans there to see him.
After his appearance stint, Morrissey gave me a few minutes of his time. We talked about hsi career highlight (other than the Super Bowl), his role in "The Super Bowl Shuffle," returning to Chicago with the Packers and more.
I really appreciate Morrissey for giving his time and consideration. I appreciate Mark and Tim for facilitating this interview. It's not every day I interview a Super Bowl champ, especially one from my '85 Bears!

Alicia's House and Glen Rylko

I have known Glen Rylko for several years. We became friends over our interest in old time wrestling, comic cons and other fun stuff. Many times, Johngy's Beat has featured Glen with his many celebrity encounters.
Taking nothing away from meeting celebrities, today I am featuring Glen doing something far more important. Glen has done a lot of volunteer work with Alicia's House, a food pantry named to honor Alicia, a young girl who passed away in 2001.
Grandma Stella and Poppy Juan started the non-for profit food pantry. Alicia's House continues to feed hungry families. In another homage to Alicia, a little treat is put in each food bag, just as Alicia had done years ago while working next to her grandmother at the church pantry.
Glen and his wife Alicia have volunteered at Alicia's House for more than 15 years, having been touched by Alicia's tragic story and inspired by the dedication of the volunteers all year.
On why it is so special to Glen and Alicia, Glen stated, "Seeing the pantry first hand and the people they serve made me aware of those who have things way worse than me and my family. They are lacking in basic day-to-day needs and otherwise would not have anything for Christmas." This is a great thought especially at this time of year.
Glen and Alicia are deeply involved. Glen explained, "My wife, Alicia Rylko, and I, volunteer for all of their fundraisers, food distributions, and parties and giveaways. In 2017 we helped prepare and distribute over 1200 Holiday baskets. Christmas gifts, stockings, coats, hats, gloves and scarves to over 1900 children were given away. An annual party for special needs children and their family was held for over 275 in attendance for which I am the emcee for the event. I am also the emcee in the evening dinner for the Alicia's House Golf Outing, Dinner, and Auctions which is our biggest fundraiser of the year. I also did the ring announcing for a couple of pro-wrestling fundraiser events."
Naturally Glen did ring announcing for their wrestling events. Fondly recalling the days of Dick the Bruiser and other greats, Glen has a fine appreciation for wrestling.
Ironically, it was wrestling that first brought Glen to Alicia's House. Glen told me, "I heard about them first from a good friend Dan Roeglin from Minnesota. Another fan George Gunderson (RIP) further made me aware of them. I met Juan and Stella shortly thereafter at a Cauliflower Alley Reunion all the way in Las Vegas in 2004,and we are only 20 miles away from each other."
Just like wrestling connected Glen to Alicia's House, it connected me to Glen. I am very grateful for that connection. If a cause is important to Glen, I will always support him.
It is important to remember those less fortunate than us, especially during the holiday season. I know Glen and Alicia will be giving their time and energy to Alicia's House as they always do. I hope this has inspired at least a few others to check out thie great cause and honor precious, little Alicia. Give or volunteer if you can. You might just see Glen and Alicia Rylko there. Tell them Johngy sent you.
Check out AliciasHouse.org for more info on this great organization. You can also get news and updates on the Alicia's House Facebook page.

Friend Encounters: Dominique Collins and Jim Strong

Friend Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

The Chicago Bliss won the 2018 Legends Football League championship. that is their 4th championship in the last 6 years. Coincidentally I started covering the Bliss in 2013, during their first run at a title.
One of the constants on all four championship teams was Dominique "DC" Collins. DC is the first Bliss player I ever interviewed at a game.
I have written about DC many times. She came to the Bliss with an impressive high school and college resume as a star athlete. Still, full contact football was a different story and a new challenge.
Over the several years I have covered the Bliss, I have seen DC work extremely hard at bettering her game. She showed continual and increasing levels of focus, determination and passion. She was an excellent player as a rookie, but she grew into a Hall of Fame quality player. It really was a pleasure watching her development.
Even more important, was knowing her for all these years. She is such a class act off the field, too. She has appeared at most Bliss promo appearances and is always pushing the team and the league. In short, she is the perfect player. The fans, the team and the league all love and respect her. DC is not only one of my favorite athletes, she is one of my favorite people.
My buddy Jim Strong would agree with everything I have written. Jim and I have crossed paths many times at wrestling events and Bliss games. He has become one of the biggest Bliss fans out there. I know Jim has a huge collection of Bliss memorabilia and autographs and DC is one of his favorite players, too.
It's no mystery why so many people love DC. She is just the best. She's a beast on the field and a real sweetheart off of it.
Unfortunately for all, DC has announced her retirement. It will be interesting to see how she handles life away from the Bliss. I have no doubt that she will remain busy with her job, fitness and coaching others. I just wonder how much she will miss the contact on the field. Walking away from something you love, especially after 4 titles, can't be easy.
Good luck to DC and thanks for the memories! I'm sure I will see you around, but I will miss #12 on the field.

On the Beat With Richie Ramone at Chicago Pop Culture Con 2018

I have been a fan of the Ramones since new 6th grade classmate Steve Marino introduced me to the punk rockers. I thought their sound was so original and unique, but I didn't realize how important they were to the music scene.
Richie Ramone joined the band in February 1983 and stayed with the band through August of 1987. The talented drummer has been called the greatest drummer the Ramones ever had. This comes from critics and lead singer Joey Ramone. That is high praise, especially from Joey, considering the amount of dissension often found in the band. Richie is also the only Ramones drummer to write songs and sing lead. His stint in the Ramones might have been relatively short, but he it was memorable.
When I signed on to do coverage of Chicago Pop Culture Con, I contacted Richie about an interview. He quickly agreed and I even did extra coverage on his October appearance in Chicago. That story can be found on the Patch at Richie Ramone Will Rock Reggie's.
Walking into Chicago Pop Culture Con, Richie was the first celebrity I saw. Of course, I immediately went to him. Although quiet, Richie has an aura about him. Maybe it was just me being a fan, but he has that "natural" rocker presence.
I kept the interview short, because time is precious at these events. I can't keep Richie from his fans for too long. We talked about him joining the Ramones, being their best drummer and his upcoming book release. Released November 27, I Know Better Now: My Life Before, During, and After the Ramones is available on Amazon.
I'm definitely adding Richie's book to my library. It should be arriving in the mail this week. I can't wait to dive into it and learn more about Richie.
Extremely talented and versatile, Richie debuted a classical composition in 2007. He was both the featured soloist and the concerto's co-composer. I have listened to Richie's work outside of the Ramones and I am even more in awe of him. Of course, the Ramones will always be special to me, but my interest in Richie goes beyond the Ramones.
It was a real pleasure talking to Richie during and after the interview. It brought me back to my early days of loving the band. Although Richie joined the band about 6 years later, he is part of such a big part of their history. Now, I am proud to say he is a part of Johngy's Beat history.
Go to RichieRamone.com for more info and updates on Richie. You can also follow Richie Ramone on Facebook.
Thank you to Richie for his time and consideration. Thanks to Tim Zurko of Zurko Promotions for the hospitality and access all weekend.

Guy Gilchrist at Wizard World Chicago 2017

Wizard World has taken over Madison, Wisconsin through Sunday, December 2. I'll be crossing the northern border to be "On the Beat." Over the last few days, I've recalled some of my memories from past Wizard World events.
For 22 years, Guy Gilchrist had been the writer/illustrator of the popular Nancy comic strip. Earlier this year, Gilchrist stepped away from the world of Nancy, Aunt Fritzi, Sluggo and the others in their world. Far from retiring, Gilchrist is concentrating on other projects, including some tv projects.
Nancy's origin dates back to 1922, when Fritzi Ritz debuted in newspapers. Nancy joined the strip in 1933, soon becoming the focal point. Nancy became the new strip title in 1938.
Gilchrist's final story arc saw Aunt Fritzi marry boyfriend Phil. Nancy took a 2 month hiatus after Gilchrist's departure, but has since returned with the strip's first-ever female author.
Starting his career in the late 1970's Gilchrist has been producing many forms of comic art and also some sports logos over the years. He has designed logos for Minor League baseball teams, including the Portland Sea Dogs, Norwich Navigators, and New Britain Rock Cats.
When I first met him at Wizard World, Gilchrist was happy to discuss his work on Nancy, as well as his other creations. I loved our conversation and also just listening to him talk to his many fans. He clearly has a deep passion for what he does. He lovingly described his characters as friends.
It had to be hard stepping away from Nancy, but he is still creating. I haven't talked to him since his career turn, but I hope to catch him at a future Wizard World.
Go to AGuyGilchristProduction.com for more info on this talented creator. There's a lot of fun stuff there, including an opportunity to have Guy "Muppetize" you!
Check out WizardWorld.com for more info and schedules. You can also check here for recurring coverage year round.
