On the Beat with Chicago Bandits Assistant Coach Roman Foore

The Johngy's Beat-Justin's World joint coverage of the Chicago Bandits continues today here with an interview with Assistant Coach Roman Foore.  Last Friday, over on Justin's World of Softball at Bandits Interviews: Parts 3-5, he featured my interviews with Foore, Emily Allard and Sara Moulton.
Assistant Coach Foore has an extensive and successful softball background, including playing and coaching at high levels.  He has played for the United States Men’s National Fastpitch Team.  He has coached at Appalachian State and the University of St. Thomas, as well as Eagan (MN) High School and independent fastpitch teams.  He is a valuable member of the Bandits organization.
Coach Foore was very approachable even before the interview.  After talking to him, I can tell he enjoys what he does, including still being active on the fastpitch softball scene.
I wish I could make it to more games to talk more at length with Coach Foore.  For now, I will be happy with this season being a great start into more coverage in the future.  My interview with Coach Foore can be found at Roman Foore Interview.
To learn more about Foore and the Bandits, go to ChicagoBandits.com and then go to a Bandits game.  The Bandits are a great organization and the games are a lot of fun.

Flash Forward to Flashback Weekend

Next Friday, I will be ensconced in all things horror at Flashback Weekend.  The yearly convention will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Rosemont from Friday, August 8 through Sunday, August 10.  That's 3 days of horror coolness.
The featured attraction is Robert Englund in Freddy makeup.  Englund alone is awesome, adding the Freddy makeup makes this a rare and awesome event.  You will not get this opportunity again.
Additional guests include Traci Lords, Zach Galligan, a reunion of Children of the Corn, a reunion of Phantasm, a concert by he stars of Phantasm and much more.  Local celebrities Svengoolie, Dann Gire, Nick Digilio and Kitty Zombie will also be appearing.  Literally, everywhere you turn will be something horror-ably interesting.
This is an annual "must" on my convention calendar.  Over the years, I have met so many great celebrities at Flashback, including Adrienne Barbeau, Kane Hodder and my all-time favorite Roddy Piper.
Piper had his son Colt with him.  Having met both several times, I had the pleasure of having a bit of a real conversation with both, despite the lengthy line.  That's just the kind of guy Piper is.  He makes sure everyone goes away satisfied.
This is also the type of convention Flashback Weekend is.  It just has that small convention feel to it, while still having big names, exciting events and interesting attractions all over.  I haven't missed one yet and I will be there again next weekend.
Go to FlashbackWeekend.com to get all of the info and updates.  Then, make sure you go to the actual event.  Flashback Weekend is a winner!

Celebrity Jersey Cards #184 Belinda Carlisle & Jane Wiedlin

This is a regular series which attempts to combine my lifelong passion for baseball cards with my semi-professional interest in celebrities.  The Tampa Bay Rays are in last place in the AL East, but lately, they have been improving and are on the go or based on today's cards, maybe that is the go-go.

A native of Los Angeles, CA, Belinda Carlisle co-founded the Go-Go's (originally called the Misfits) with a few of her friends, including Jane Wiedlin.  The Go-Go's were one of the most popular bands of the 80's, although Carlisle embarked on a solo career in 1985.  The Go-Go's would later reunite in 2001.  Carlisle is throwing out the first pitch for her Celebrity Jersey Card.
Jane Wiedlin was actually born in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, but attended college in Los Angeles, where she met Carlisle.  Wiedlin ventured into acting during the Go'Go's break.  I am assuming she wore the Rays jersey for a concert in Tampa, because I know of not other connection.  In any case, I like the symmetry with Carlisle's card.  I also like seeing a guitar on a Celebrity Jersey Card.

Friendly Encounters: Robert Anthony and Billy Corgan

This is a weekly series featuring friends meeting celebrities.

Billy Corgan and Robert Anthony are definitely two of the most important people in Resistance Pro Wrestling's history.  I dare say that with the Baron brothers, they would comprise the Mount Rushmore of R Pro.
Billy is the Creative Director of R Pro.  With the Baron brothers, Billy got R Pro off the ground and flying high.  He had the vision and he has made it a reality (and a reality tv show, if you pardon my pun).
"The Ego" Robert Anthony is an R Pro original.  He started from the ground and worked his butt off to become one of the most popular and successful wrestlers in the company.  He has held the Heavyweight title and has been a tag team champion (with Jocephus Brody).
I have watched these men up close.  I have seen all they do.  I have witnessed how much they care.  It has been a pleasure to be a part of the company and to know both of them.
How fitting is it that the picture of them is at center court at the United Center, where Michael Jordan ascended to greatness?  Someday, both Billy and Ego will be inducted into the R Pro Hall of Fame and I plan on being there for the induction.  Until then, I will just continue to enjoy the ride.

On the Beat with Brittany Cervantes of the Chicago Bandits

Justin's World of Softball and Johngy's Beat brings you the second interview of our joint coverage of the Chicago Bandits.  I talked to hot-hitting Brittany Cervantes after a recent game at The Ballpark, home of the Bandits.  That interview can be found at Brittany Cervantes Steps into Justin's World.
A product of the University of Kentucky, Cervantes became the only player in UK to hit at least 10 home runs in each of her four seasons.  The third year player has improved each season.  Cervantes was playing the outfield when we talked, but she has since played mostly at 1st base.
I enjoyed my first interview with a professional softball player.  Cervantes was fun and personable.  My only problem was when she mentioned her fandom of the Los Angeles Kings.  I know she is a California native, but she will eventually turn to the Blackhawks if she stays in Chicago long enough.  Seriously, Cervantes was very cool.
Cervantes looks to have a bright future on and off the field.  She is currently an Assistant Coach at Loyola University in Chicago.  Learn more about Cervantes and the rest of the Chicago Bandits at ChicagoBandits.com.

On the Beat with Chicago Bandits Manager Shane Winkler

As I previously mentioned, Justin of Justin's World, contacted me a while back about doing some joint coverage of the Chicago Bandits.  Justin's World is "Your #1 source for Division 1 and professional softball news, articles, opinion, interviews, and more!"  Now it is also the home of my interviews with the Bandits.
I wanted to start with the man in charge, Manager Shane Winkler.  Winkler played baseball at Butler University, followed by a couple seasons in the minor leagues.  Two of his managers in the minors were former major leaguers Buddy Biancalana and Tom Browning.  When his playing career ended, Winkler started coaching.  His journey eventually lead him to the Bandits.  You can hear about Winkler's career and much more in the interview at Shane Winkler Steps into Justin's World.
Did Winkler step into Justin's World or did he find himself on Johngy's Beat?  Thanks to Justin reaching out, Winkler and the rest of the Bandits will be stepping into Justin's World and on Johngy's Beat.  That's double the coverage!  Justin and I hope you enjoy the coverage as much as we enjoy immersing ourselves in the Bandits.  Stay tuned, because it has only just begun.

Teens 2 Teens Update Featuring Mike Matheny

It has been a while since I wrote about Teens2Teens, a wonderful organization dedicated to helping struggling teens. Teens 2 Teens is all about forging friendships and guiding teenagers through the rough patches they face.
I first heard of Teens 2 Teens through John Schenk, who was in his teens at the time, but had already started making a difference in the lives of other teens.  I have had the pleasure of watching it grow from an idea to a full-fledged reality and beyond.
John's journey to this point actually began in the fifth grade.  His sister had a kidney transplant and John, wanting to do his part to raise money, started an online business selling sports memorabilia.  John learned a lot about business and met a lot of great athletes and contacts.  Unfortunately, this did not help John when he was lost in despair upon entering high school.
John's story could have taken a tragic turn right there.  Through the grace of God, with intense therapy and the interaction in a youth group, John emerged a strong person with a mission.  In his words, he wants to give others in need the opportunity "to take part in a community of faith and encouragement."
This story impacted me greatly.  John had made a friend and supporter for life.  Like a lot of others, I struggled as a teen.  I wish T2T had been an option for me.  More important, I am glad it is an option for teens today.  I have been more than happy to help spread the word on this great organization.
Recently, John contacted me and gave me an update.  Things are going very well with Teens to Teens.  T2T is growing and that means more teens are being reached.
John told me about a new T2T project.  In his words, "We've recently started a video series, which will aim at offering hope and inspiration to teens who are suffering. Mike Matheny was kind enough to be the keynote speaker at our gala (Winter Gala at Ambruster Great Hall) this past January, so during the evening we sat down and put together a brief interview with him."
Currently the manager of the St. Louis Cardinals, Matheny retired after 13 seasons as a major league catcher.  His playing career was cut short due to a concussion.  I always liked and respected Matheny and now even more so!
Matheny's interview can be found at Teens2Teens.org, specifically at Mike Matheny's Testimonial.  While you are there, check out all of the other great work that Teens 2 Teens is doing.  I am no longer a teen in need, but there are plenty of interesting things, inspirational bits, lessons to be learned and more at Teens2Teens.  They are making a difference.

On the Beat with Michael West at Days of the Dead Indy 2014

Author Michael West is a JohngysBeat.com staple at conventions.  We continued that trend at the recent Days of the Dead convention.
West was promoting Hades Disciples, his newest book and the second in the Legacy of the Gods series (Poseidon's Children was the first).  West describes the series as multi-genre, consisting of dark fantasy, horror, sci-fi and more.  It sounds interesting to me.  I am not just a fan here.  I bought my copy and will be reporting back here in the near future.
Aside from the usual questions about his current and future projects, I had a little fun with West.  I asked him about his weapon of choice, as well as what scares him.  His answers surprised me just a bit.
I really like West.  He is friendly and forthcoming with info.  He is interested in promoting his work, without being obnoxious.  He is the perfect con guest and interview subject.  I will always go to him for an update interview (and no, that is not what scares him the most).
After you watch the interview, check out ByMichaelWest.com and the Michael West Facebook page and follow Michael West on twitter.  You can also look forward to more West interviews here.

On the Beat with Resistance Pro Wrestling at "Deliverance"

Resistance Pro's "Deliverance" was another great night of entertainment.  As usual, JohngysBeat.com was there to enjoy the evening, but also to record some fun interviews with the stars at R Pro.
I started the night by interviewing C Red.  Despite being the successful manager of da Soul Touchaz and one of the fascinating R Pro broadcasters, this interview focused mostly on R Pro's Positive Outreach Program" (POP).  C Red discussed the origin, growth and future of POP.
We finally got Lucy Mendez back for an interview.  Recently voted "The sexiest Female Wrestler in the Midwest," Mendez discussed that award, her love of the St. Louis Cardinals and more in this fun exchange.
JohngysBeat.com's Special Correspondent Jonathan McMahon took the interview spot by landing Jake O'Neill.  This, too, focused mainly on the POP program.  O'Neill also talked about his future in R Pro.
The Slobberknockers have been part of R Pro in various roles since the beginning.  They finally got a shot in the ring (against the tag team champs, no less) and we talked to them immediately after their match.  This is emotional, inspirational and fun.
Justin King was not scheduled for an interview, but that did not stop him from making his presence felt here.  King interrupted a conversation between Dere and me and also an interview with returning ESV superfan Matt Parker.  King is angry and he let us know about it.
Speaking of ESV superfan, ESV himself (Eric St. Vaughn) took Matt to task over his lack of support over the last several months.  ESV demands a lot of himself and those around him.
This is just a slice of the fun I had at R Pro at "Deliverance."  Next Friday, I am heading out to "Mob Rules" to get more interviews and have more fun.  Sat tuned to the Resistance Facebook page and the JohngysBeat.com Resistance playlist on YouTube for all future R Pro interviews.

Friendly Encounters: Eugene Cresto and Burt Young

This is a weekly series featuring my friends meeting celebrities.

This one just kills me.  Eugene Cresto and I have similar goals and mindsets about meeting celebrities.  We have crossed paths many times at various events.  It's always good to see Eugene.
About the only time I was not happy to see him was when I kept seeing pictures of him on Facebook at this year's Motor City Comic Con.  I was supposed to be there, but work obligations kept from attending.
One after the other, new cool pictures of Eugene and various celebrities kept appearing in my newsfeed.  I was happy for him being there and slightly envious, of course.
Then I saw the picture that really hurt.  Eugene and Burt Young.  Burt Young is one of a few actors to appear in all of the Rocky movies.  His "Paulie" character is legendary.  Of all of the stars at the MCCC, Young was the one who I really wanted to meet and there was Eugene posing with him.
Ouch that hurt.
Don't get me wrong.  I am glad he got to meet everyone there.  As I wrote, he is a good guy.  If it was a faraway con, I wouldn't have cared.  It wasn't though.  This was MCCC, a con about 4 hours from my home.  I have gone 6 straight years.
So why am I even putting this on my site?  Why am I preserving it to be seen any time on my site?  I guess since I could not meet Young, I have to just live vicariously through Eugene.
Thanks bud!

On the Beat with Jessica Peyton of the Green Bay Chill

Green Bay has had some great quarterbacks over the years.  Players like Bart Starr, Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers have been leading the Packers to victories throughout my life.  Besides Rodgers, Green Bay has another great active quarterback.
Jessica Peyton is one of the star quarterbacks in the Legends Football League.  Despite the Chills record, Peyton has earned the respect of everyone watching, including me.
I had the chance to speak with Peyton prior to last week's game against the Chicago Bliss.  Everyone knew the matchup was a mismatch, as the Bliss was clearly the better team, but Peyton showed class and poise as we discussed the game and her career.  You can't ask for more from any player.
As I previously wrote about Chill Coach Gilbert Brown, the team cannot be blamed for the situation.  The LFL has had some bumps this season and the Chill have not been able to get on track.  In a better system, with Coach Brown and players like Peyton, things would be different.  Green Bay/Milwaukee could definitely embrace this team, if given a fair shot.
I really appreciate Peyton taking time to talk to this Chicago reporter.  On a night when the Chill just wanted to play and give their fans a good showing, Peyton was kind enough to give us an excellent interview.  Thank you, Ms. Peyton and I hope 2015 is better for you and the Chill.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #183 Vida Guerra & Velvet Sky

This is a regular series which tries to combine my lifelong passion for baseball cards with my semi-professional interest in celebrities.  Since it is easy to hate the Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Yankees, I am giving two reasons to like both teams.

Born in Cuba, raised in New Jersey, model-actress Vida Guerra recently cracked the top ten list of celebrity female searches on the internet.  I have no problem jumping on her bandwagon.  Ideally, we would ride together on that bandwagon (hey, I can dream).  Guerra gets extra points (although she doesn't need them) for also sporting the Dodgers cap on her Celebrity Jersey Card.  The shades tucked into her jersey also are a nice touch.
Jamie Lynn Szantyr is better known by her in-ring name of Velvet Sky.  She was born in Connecticut and stays true to her roots by wearing a Yankees jersey for this appearance on a Celebrity Jersey Card.  Velvet has appeared here before (and hopefully she will appear here again)  Hideki Matsui's jersey never looked better.

On the Beat with Hardcore Heather Owens at Days of the Dead Indy 2014

As I meandered my way through Days of the Dead, I ran into Hardcore Heather Owens.  Technically, it wasn't merely an accident, since I knew she would be there, but we did actually cross paths without planning it.
The last time I saw Hardcore Heather, she was in a three-way wrestling match with Thunderkitty and Crazy Mary Dobson at Resistance Pro.  The match was for the #1 contender to the R Pro Women's title currently held by Mickie Knuckles.  Unfortunately for Heather, she came out on the losing end.  She discusses that match and her future in R Pro in the interview below.
Heather talked about who she wanted to meet at Days and I rubbed it in a bit, because I already met that person.  That is just part of the fun at Days.
I also learned a bit about Ribbin' on the Square, the podcast she does with Eddie Gonzalez.  They talk wrestling and horror and other fun stuff, too.  With Heather as the co-pilot, you never know where it will go, but it will always be fun.
You can check out Ribbin' on the Square at FromDuskTillCon.com every Tuesday at 10 pm EST.  You can also get updates from the Heather Owens page on Facebook and by following Heather Owens on twitter.  Of course, you can also come to Resistance Pro and watch her work her magic inside the ring!

On the Beat with Green Bay Chill Head Coach Gilbert Brown

The Chicago Bliss beat the Green Bay Chill 32-7 to finish their regular season undefeated at 3-0-1.  Unfortunately for the Chill, they finished 0-3.  At this time, I am not sure if there will be another game for the Chill this season.
The Chill is coached by Gilbert Brown, an excellent player for the Green Bay Packers a few years back.  Brown played defensive tackle for the Pack from 1993 to 2003.  He was quite popular in Green Bay and was a good choice as the Chill coach.
Chicago fans were not all that enamored with Brown.  Oh sure, we respected him begrudgingly.  The man played in 125 games for the Packers, but he was always a thorn in the sides of the Bears.  In 1996, he was a starter for all 16 games, as the Packers went on to win the Super Bowl.  A few hours south, the Bears struggled through the 90's.
Thanks to Chicago Bliss Head Coach Keith Hac, I had the chance to talk to Coach Brown prior to the Chill's game versus the Bliss.  Brown was very agreeable and it was a fun exchange.
I respected (and liked) Brown as a player.  I also respect him as a coach.  The Chill have endured a tough season, including a quick move to Milwaukee just prior to the season.  Brown has kept the team together and has done an excellent job, all things considered, despite the Chill's 0-3 record.
The LFL is a league unlike all others.  There are a lot of factors that played into the Chill's 0-3 season.  The main thing to remember is that Borwn supported his team, acted with class and kept his sense of humor.  In the end, these are the things that count and these are the things I respect.
Even opposing coach Hac said nice things about Brown.  They have a competitive friendship and clearly respect each other.  It is very cool to see.
I hope you enjoy this interview as much as I did.  Just meeting Brown was cool, but talking to him and goofing a bit with him, really will make this one memorable for me.

On the Beat with Chicago Bliss Head Coach at Game #4

Last Saturday, the Chicago Bliss crossed the northern border of Illinois to face the Green Bay Chill in Milwaukee, WI.  The Green Bay-Chicago rivalry is legendary in football and this LFL matchup certainly did its part to continue that, with the Bliss winning 32-7.
Prior to and right after the game, we spoke to Chicago Bliss Head Coach Keith Hac.  Hac was his usual candid self in both parts of the double-interview.
During the first part, Hac predicted the score.  Between that and the second interview, the Coach Ryan Andrews, Coach John Witte, JohngysBeat.com's Jack Keenan and I all made our score predictions.  I guessed 28-7.  Not too bad, but not good enough to win the prediction battle.
It looks like Jack might be getting ribbed for a long time about his score prediction.  Coach Hac starts it right during the interview.
I hope you enjoy this interview two-fer as much as I did (and more than Jack probably does).  Stay tuned to JohngysBeat.com for more coverage tomorrow.
The Bliss finished their season undefeated at 3-0-1.  Their next stop is a playoff game in Los Angeles against an opponent to be determined.  Stay tuned as Bliss coverage continues all the way to the championship.

On the Beat with Brian Williams at Days of the Dead Indy 2014

At the recent Days of the Dead con, I stumbled upon Brian Williams.  Williams is a writer and producer and the creative force behind Time to Kill.  He described Time to Kill, his feature debut, as his "personal love letter to greasy, grimy 70's exploitation films."  I will let Williams tell you more in the interview below, but I was already hooked with that description.
I won't kill the whole interview, but I want to mention his perseverance.  He was a photographer who had an interest in film-making.  He worked at his craft and did not give up.  The result was Time to Kill.  I should have written that his first result was Time to Kill, because he certainly will have more movies coming out in the future.
Add Williams to the list of fresh movie-makers I will be following.  Finding new film-makers (like finding new authors) is one of my favorite things.  I am really looking forward to watching Time to Kill and seeing where Williams goes from here.
After you watch the interview, head over to the Time to Kill Facebook page and the Mostly Harmless Pictures Facebook page,  You will get all of the news and updates there and hopefully, I will have more in the future, too.

Psycho Babble at Exxxotica Expo

At the recent Exxxotica Expo, we had the pleasure of enjoying a great convention in a new way.  Ordinarily JohngysBeat.com will do our own thing at these events.  At Exxxotica Expo, we tagged along with PsychoBabbleTv.com.  We watched, learned and enjoyed the weekend festivities.
Exxxotica Expo is loaded with adult stars greeting fans, posing for pictures, signing autographs and selling their merchandise.  Beautiful women like Tera Patrick wore big smiles and sexy clothes, much to the delight of the crowd.  There were also a few male stars, just to be fair.
The crew at PsychoBabbleTV was all over the place.  The did interviews and had fun with the various stars.  You can see all of their coverage on PsychoBabbleTV.com.
The PsychoBabble crew is awesome.  They are fun, professional and successful.  They are what JohngysBeat.com wants to be (and we are on our way).
Exxxotica Expo was the perfect place for us to learn from themaster, while having a blast.  The convention was three days of absolute fun.  The folks at Exxxotica Expo take the event seriously, without taking it too seriously.  They are there to give everyone a good time and they succeeded.
Next year, JohngysBeat.com hopes to be back at Exxxotica Expo.  We want to take what we learned from PsychoBabbleTV.com and put it into practice.  We want to see what else the Expo will offer next year.  In other words, we want to have another great time, thanks to Exxxotica!

Friendly Encounters: John Cheney and Bill Nahorodny

This is a weekly feature about friends who have met celebrities.

This edition has a bit of a twist.  I have never met either person involved and I actually knew the celebrity first.
I first became aware of Bill Nahorodny in the mid-70's when he was working his way through the Philadelphia Phillies organization as a catcher.  The Chicago White Sox acquired him late in 1977 and he played through 1979 on the southside.  Nahorodny went on to play for the Braves, Indians and Mariners, before retiring.  Actually, he finished his career back in the Phillies organization, although not in the majors.
He finished with a .240 average, 25 hoe runs, 109 rbis and 74 runs scored.  He also made the 1978 Topps All-Star Rookie team.
I was a big fan of Nahorodny.  Recently I connected with him on Facebook and have since communicated with him on several occasions.  He is one of the nicest guys around.  He appreciates his career and the fans.
Another fan of his is John Cheney.  I saw some posts from Cheney about meeting Nahorodny back in his Sox days and I asked him to share his story and pictures here.  He agreed, as did Nahorodny.

From John Cheney:
I think that was 78, in the mall in Joliet. I was so excited to hear that my favorite player was signing autographs and I would get to meet him.
I think the posts themselves are pretty special, the things Bill said, tell the story pretty well.  I'm glad this all happened the way it has.
It all started with a conversation I was having with my son, Izic. We were at the sports store looking at Blackhawks sweaters.  He asked me what my all time favorite jersey was.  I told him of the 78 Sox uniforms that everyone thought were ugly lol still my favorite of all time.
Then I told him about the Nahorodny jersey my mom made me, and we googled him right there.  First thing that came up was the FACEBOOK link, the rest is history
Now my boy is talking about Nahorodny lol it's cool.

It is cool.  It is very cool on many levels.  I love the old school pics.  I love those Sox uniforms.  Nahorodny was one of my guys back then, too, although I am a bit older than Cheney.  I know Cheney's feelings well though.  I still get excited when I meet childhood favorites of mine.
I hope Nahorodny makes it to Chicago at some point.  Dinner is certainly on me.  John Cheney is also invited.  Let's make this a party!
I really appreciate Cheney and Nahorodny for allowing me to share this nostalgic romp.  These are two class acts.  Lastly, thanks for the memories Mr. Nahorodny!!

On the Beat with Brian Steward at Days of the Dead Indy 2014

What can I say about artist Brian Steward?  Obviously, he is incredibly talented and creative.  I started following Brian because of a Giada print, but it takes more than Giada to keep me hooked.  Brian certaibnly has a lot more in his body of work than just Giada.
Brian also is a funny guy.  To quote his Facebook page, "I draw stuff. Horrifying things, sexy things, clever things and thingy things as well."  Thingy things?  Just what is a thing thing?  Never mind.  I probably don't want to know or he probably would try tricking me with his answer anyway.
I am excited that he has an upcoming movie project.  His "Elephant Man of War" is being made into a movie.  Brian was a bit tight-lipped on the details, but I made him promise to give us scoops as details are available.  (In other words, I threatened to bug him at every convention.)  From artist to movie-maker seems an interesting jump and I am excited to watch it all develop and to see the finished product.  With Steward behind it, expect the unexpected.
My only real complaint about Steward sis that I am not pictured with him in his gallery on his site.  He has several pictures with JohngysBeat.com favorite Traci Lords.  He has pictures with Ace Frehley and Peter Criss.  I get all of that, but he also has pictures with some relatively unknowns.  Where is Johngy?
I am the 316th best source for pop culture nuggets.  JohngysBeat.com is in the top 10 million websites of all time.  I have my own shirt.  I have even been recognized and asked for pictures at a few conventions.  Surely this must translate to something.
Maybe it is just an oversight on Brian's part.  Hey, when you are mingling with the likes of Traci and Ace, I understand how Johngy might take a backseat.  I am sure I will take my rightful place when things settle down.
Until then, I encourage everyone to check out the interview below.  After that, head over to BrianSteward.com to see a lot of his great work and to get updates on his projects in the works.  You might also eventually see Johngy on there.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #182 Melissa Rauch & Sarah Shahi

This is a regular series which attempts to merge my lifelong passion for baseball cards with my semi-professional interest in celebrities.  What says summer better than pretty women and the Los Angeles Dodgers?

New Jersey native Melissa Rauch rose to stardom on The Big Bang Theory, which is set in California.  She successfully joined the show in the third season and she will never be called the "Cousin Oliver" of TBBT.  She gets extra points for wearing the Dodgers cap for her Celebrity Jersey Card.
A native of Texas, actress Sarah Shahi was a cheerleader for the Dallas Cowboys.  With that Texas connection, I would have thought we'd see her repping the Rangers for her Celebrity Jersey Card.  Instead, Shahi went Hollywood.  I'm not complaining.  She looks good in any jersey.

On the Beat with Jill Sixx at Days of the Dead Indy 2014

Director and producer Jill Sixx Gevargizian was one of the first people I contacted for interviews at Days of the Dead in Indy.  Jill's latest project is Call Girl, a horror movie short about a guy who attempts "to exploit his date night via video-chat, he ends up sharing something far more disturbing."
The concept intrigued me.  Even more fascinating is how Jill could have told this story in short film version.  I am in awe of shorts like Call Girl, which tell the story so quickly.
I used to hate short stories in print or on film.  I hated that they were not "fully developed" (in my eyes) into a "real story."  It is only through reading several horror anthologies and watching several short films, that I have really grown to appreciate these shorties.  I realize now that they are two completely different concepts all together.  Neither is better.  Both require talented people to produce the finished product.
Jill was very friendly and enthusiastic about Call Girl when we talked at Days.  This is an exciting time for Jill.  The movie is being screened at several conventions and fests.  It is getting great reviews.  It must be awesome watching the finished product being well-received and gaining popularity.  I am excited for her!
I hope to meet Jill again at future cons.  I plan on following the progress of Call Girl and Jill.  Just like I like discovering new authors, I love finding new film makers like Jill.
After you watch the interview, please check out the Call Girl Facebook page and also follow Call Girl on twitter.  I am also excited about whatever might come next from Jill!  Stay tuned.

On the Beat with AJ Moore at Days of the Dead Indy 2014

At every Days of the Dead convention, I know I will see many talented artists.  With so many artists out there, it must be hard to stand out, but AJ Moore did just that at this year's Days.
He seemingly draws everything from comic super heroes to WNBA super stars.  His work is really interesting.  Not only is each piece beautifully done, his styles seem to change depending on the piece.  Some are simple, while others are much more intricate.  Some are realistic, while others are more animated.  I'd almost think there were a few different artists at work here.  That is a credit to his tremendous talent.
I really enjoyed the interview.  I loved his advice to young artists and his thoughts on everything in general.  I would love to meet Moore again and talk more in depth on some subjects.
I'd also like to ask him about wrestling.  Moore seems to have some interest in wrestling.  I saw a John Cena piece on his Facebook page and I also saw "The Ultimate Artist" video he did.  Clearly a takeoff on the Ultimate Warrior, Moore was hilarious and pretty spot on with him impression.  Very well done, indeed.
So many topics for next time, but for now, please enjoy the interview below and check out Moore on Facebook.  Roam around his pictures and see some of his creations.  I am certain you will be impressed, too.

On the Beat with Coach Keith Hac of the Chicago Bliss

The Chicago-Green Bay football rivalry is legendary.  Another chapter will be added this Saturday when the Chicago Bliss will travel north of the Illinois border to take on the Green Bay Chill.
The 2-0-1 Bliss are big favorites against the 0-2 Chill and Chicago fans should leave US Cellular Arena happy!
The Bliss are coming off of a solid 27-18 win in Las Vegas against the Sin.  Once again, the Bliss dominated on the ground.  Lead by ChrisDell Harris (80 yards, 10 attempts, 1 touchdown), the Bliss outrushed the Sin 116 to 24.  Also contributing on the ground were Alli Alberts (12 yards, 3 attempts, 1 TD), Heather Furr (11 yards, 2 attempts), Jess Price (9 yards, 1 attempt) and Deena Fagiano (1 TD).
Furr was a solid 3-4 passing for 52 yards.  Harris caught 2 passes for 24 yards, while Alberts caught 1 pass for 28 yards.  It wasn't a huge aerial attack, but it was effective and controlled.
On defense, gave up 116 yards through the air, a bit more than Coach Keith Hac would have liked.  It wasn't a dominating defensive effort, but the Bliss held the Chill to 2 scores.  Dominique Collins had 7 tackles, Kim Perez had 2 and 2.5 sacks, Furr had 2 and Yahshi Rice had 4.
Rookie Bridget McDonnell also saw her first action of the season.  McDonnell performed well on special teams and a couple goal line situations.
I talked to Coach Hac at the recent practice and got his thoughts on the game.  Hac spoke with his usual candor.  He wasn't ecstatic about the win, but he found plenty of positive aspects, too.
Hac went on to discuss the upcoming Green Bay game and again he pulled no punches.  The only thing preventing this game from being a squash match is how much playing time Hac gives to his rookies.
Back in training camp, Hac and the team all called for an undefeated season.  They will go 3-0-1 after the win on Saturday, thus fulfilling those predictions.
I am heading north for this game.  I hope to get bring back some entertaining coverage and most importantly a win!

On the Beat with Terence Muncy at Days of the Dead Indy 2014

I have seen writer-director Terence Muncy at a few conventions, but I never had the opportunity to meet him until the most recent Days of the Dead con.  Best known for Bikini Monsters and Midnight Matinee Psycho, Muncy has produced 5 films in total.
Days of the Dead is the perfect place to meet talented people like Muncy.  He had a steady line of fans all weekend, but he took time to talk to everyone and gave us a couple extra minutes for the interview, which you can watch below.
One of the funnier stories involves the name of his company.  It once was Black Forest Studios.  It is now Warbranch Productions (with Black Forest Studios being reserved for his art).  I'll let him explain the name switch.
One of his more recent projects involves some art work he did with Sammy Terry, a great horror character (who also happened to be at Days).  Obviously, Muncy is a multi-talented person, but I was really impressed with his art work.  I had not known about that part of his creative side.  What else can this guy do (and what else will he do?)?
For those answers, you can watch the interview below and you can check out Muncy on Facebook.  If you get the chance to meet him at aa con, do not pass the chance.  It's people like Muncy who really are the backbone to the horror industry.

Friendly Encounters: Scott Steiner Meets Jason David Frank

This is a weekly series featuring my friends who have met celebrities.

Scott Steiner is a wrestling legend.  Scott Steiner is a wrestler-wanna-be.  Scott Steiner is physically huge, but mostly retired.  Scott Steiner is working hard at getting into wrestling shape and he is just at the beginning of his potential career.  I have never met Scott Steiner.  I know Scott Steiner and see him every month or so.
If all of that is confusing, allow me to clear up the situation.  One Scott Steiner has been wrestling for over 25 years.  I do not know the man also known as "Big Poppa Pump."
The Scott Steiner I know would like to wrestle when he gets of age.  He is also known as "Wonder Boy."
The Scott who I know is a great guy.  Scott and his mom Heidi are fixtures on the Resistance Pro wrestling scene.  One day, Scott hopes to be a fixture in an R Pro ring.
At Wizard World last year, Scott met actor Jason David Frank, perhaps best known as the green Power Ranger.  JDF is quite accomplished in mixed martial arts.  Mock the Power Rangers if you must, but respect this man's power.
Maybe in a few years, Scott Steiner will be as accomplished in the world of wrestling.  I don't doubt Scott.  He's a good guy with a lot of heart.  At some point, you might say that you saw it here first.

On the Beat with Jerry Pyle at Days of the Dead Indy 2014

As I prepared for the Days of the Dead convention in Indianapolis, Movie-Maker Jerry Pyle was one of the first celebrity guests I approached about an interview.  Pyle responded quickly, positively and enthusiastically.  I couldn't ask for more heading into the convention.  I am happy to say that meeting him did not disappoint.
Pyle is a writer, director, producer and more.  At Days, he was promoting Service, a short which is sort of a home invasion story.  I'll let him tell you about it in the interview below, but I must say it has me very intrigued.  His enthusiasm for the project was palpable and contagious.
I love meeting people like Pyle and learning about projects like Service.  As always, I first credit the individual, but I also credit Days of the Dead for bringing in such people.  This is what I love so much about covering Days.
Like most of the celebrity guests, Pyle was very busy.  That did not prevent him from giving us a few minutes of his time.  The result was a fun, informative interview, one that I really enjoyed.  It's interviews like this, with people like Pyle, that really make me want to learn more about the subject.
Fortunately for me, Pyle made learning even easier by giving me a copy of Service.  Again, this is something above and beyond.  Pyle believes in his project and wanted me to see it.  What if I didn't like it?  If you believe in your product, that is not a question.  (As a matter of fact, I just watched Service and I loved it, but I will discuss that further in the near future.)
For now, please enjoy the interview with Pyle.  Head over to his various links and learn more about him and his projects.  You will become hooked just like I did.
Thank you to Pyle for his time and consideration.  Thanks, also, for the copy of Service.  I hope to see Pyle again at other cons and hope he appears here again sometime.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #181 Tammy Sytch & Velvet Sky

This is a regular series which attempts to merge my lifelong passion for baseball cards with my semi-professional interest in celebrities.  Today, I salute minor league baseball while featuring two beautiful wrestling stars.

New Jersey girl Tammy Sytch is wrestling's original diva and a WWE Hall of Famer.  She was once the most downloaded celebrity on AOL.  Technically, Tammy is not wearing a jersey on her Celebrity Jersey Card, but she is one of Johngy's Beat's favorites and I can bend the rules for her.  It's always a Sunny day when Tammy is around.
Velvet Sky (Or Jamie Szantyr) is one of the best female wrestlers today.  A multi-time singles and tag champ, Velvet has had most of her fame in TNA wrestling.  Velvet threw out the first pitch at a Brooklyn Cyclones game, thus earning her a Celebrity Jersey Card.

Mickie Knuckles Stole My Chair-Part 2: The Proof

Yesterday I wrote about Mickie Knuckles stealing my chair at a Resistance Pro Wrestling show a few months ago.  Today, I am presenting the screen capture of Mickie as she takes my chair.
This all happened at "The Battle Rages On" in March at St. Francis de Sales High School, back in my old neighborhood (you'd think I would be okay on my own turf).
For the record, Mickie never denied stealing my chair.  Don't ask how she could since it was recorded.  This is wrestling.  Things happen or don't happen, depending on many circumstances.  For example, millions of people have seen Ric Flair do various things during his career, yet the ref did not and therefore the record shows they did not happen.
As I stated, Mickie does not deny stealing my chair.  She did not deny licking me at a previous show either (although no footage of that is available).  Even if she did deny it, I am not sure I would argue.  Mickie is not always a rational person.  Ask D'Arcy Dixon (whom Mickie beat for the R Pro Women's title).  Actually, ask anyone.
Chair thief or not.  Crazy or not.  Mickie is one of my favorite wrestlers.  She is skilled in the ring and entertaining in and out of the ring.  Mickie can have my chair any time.  I just hope she doesn't hit me with it.

Mickie Knuckles Stole My Chair

Actually, that title should be "Mickie Knuckles Stole My Chair and Attempted to Beat the Life out of D'Arcy Dixon with It," but that title would be way too long.  It would be accurate, however.
At last month's Resistance Pro's "The Battle Rages On," Dixon and Knuckles were involved in a 5-on-5 tag team match.  It came down to Knuckles and Dixon as the final two.  Knuckles was attempting to unseat Dixon as the R Pro Women's champ.
At one point, Knuckles slid out of the ring and yelled at me to get up.  I was not about to argue with the unhinged Knuckles, although I had no idea what she wanted.
Soon it became evident that she wanted my chair.  (At least she did not want to pound me.)  She took the chair and brought it into the ring to further her cause.  Unfortunately for Dixon, this meant a brutal beatdown.  Unfortunately for Knuckles, this meant a disqualification.  Unfortunately for me, this meant a severely bent chair (again, better than a severely bent Johngy).
The next month, at "Don't Tread," Knuckles beat Dixon in a "First Blood" match to win the R Pro Women's title.  Knuckles is a deserving champ and should have an entertaining title run.

On the Beat with Yahshi Rice and ChrisDell Harris of the Chicago Bliss

The Chicago Bliss are officially 1-0-1, while the Las Vegas Sinn are 1-1-0.  Tomorrow, these two LFL Western Division rivals will battle in Las Vegas.
In the LFL power rankings, the Bliss are still #1, while the Sin has moved up to #6.  The Bliss are averaging about 60 more yards per game, while their defenses yield about the same yardage per game.
Aside from the stats, the Bliss are on a mission to prove the Seattle tie was a fluke.  Furthermore, MVP QB Heather Furr will be out to show why she is the MVP, while the Sin's Sindy Cummings wants to prove her quick start is also no fluke.  My money is on Furr to show the 19 year old what she does best...win!
At the Bliss practice Monday, I talked to Bliss stars Yahshi Rice and ChrisDell Harris.  Harris is in a battle with Jacksonville's Saige Steinmentz for the LFL lead in rushing yards.  Rice is among the league leaders in tackles with 11.5, plus a sack.
These ladies aren't just playing for stats though.  They are playing for the win.  They wanted to go 4-0 this season, but Seattle derailed that goal a bit.  Still, 3-0-1 looks pretty good.  The next step towards that goal is a win in Las Vegas.
Harris and Rice talked about the Seattle game.  They also gave us their thoughts on the upcoming game in Vegas.  The ladies are focused and loose.
I will be with the Bliss in spirit Thursday as they face the Las Vegas Sin.  I will be cheering from afar as they grab win #2.  At practice next week, I will talk to some players about the win against the Sin and their next game against the Chill (where they will go to 3-0-1).

On the Beat with Matt Gross at C2E2 2014

When the JohngysBeat.com crew covers a comic con, we do pre-con preparation (You might call it "pre-con recon").  Sometimes though, we rely on momentary interest on site.  In other words, sometimes we just wander around and talk to the talented artists etc. who interest us in some way.
That's how we came across Matt Gross, the creative force behind Caaats!.  Maaatt (we stole that joke from his website) is a Comic Artist, Illustrator and Graphic Designer (stole that, too).  He is quite taented and very passionate about his cats, which is probably why he created Caaats! (that is our original thought...no theft there).
Caats! features Olive and Hazel, two cats.  The young Olive and the older Hazel often clash and the result is very entertaining.  They are also best friends, which adds another layer.
It is no coincidence that Matt and his wife have two cats also named Olive and Hazel.  Matt obviously loves cats and finds humor in them.  Fortunately for us, he shares this humor through his work.
After you check out JohngysBeat.com's Contributor Extraordinaire Matt (or should that also be Maaatt?) Parker's interview with Gross, head over to Caaats.com to learn more about Matt and the caaats.
