Happy Birthday, Cuzz!!

Today is the birthday of Chuck "Cuzz" Gekas, a longtime, dear friend. I won't see him, but I send greetings here and I'll call him later.
I met Cuzz through his cousin, Chuck. My group cannot have two Chucks, so he became Cuzz. It's a name and vibe he has totally embraced.
Cuzz and I have had many great adventures. We can have a great time with deep conversations on spirituality or we can have goofy chats on the best backup catchers. I greatly appreciate those times.
Cuzz is like a brother to me. I am better for knowing him.
As a huge help to my site over the years, I know Cuzz will eventually read this. I want him to know I think the world of him and hope he has a great birthday!

Celebrity Jersey Cards #609 Charlotte Flair & Alexa Bliss

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a weekly series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebrities wearing jerseys. Today, I continue my alphabetical march through all the MLB teams.

Ashley Fleihr was born in Charlotte, North Carolina. Adopting the name Charlotte and taking the last ring name of her wrestler father Ric, she has gone on to a Hall of Fame bound career. Having won many titles already, Charlotte currently wrestles for WWE SmackDown.

A native of Columbus, OH, Alexis Kaufman earned fame as Alexa Bliss in the WWE. Debuting in 2013, Bliss has already won five singles titles in the WWE. An avid Disney fan, Bliss has been known to cosplay in and out of the ring. She cosplayed a White Sox pitcher when tossing a ceremonial pitch and gaining a Celebrity Jersey Card.

Cards That Never Were: Norm Snead Topps 1977

Cards That Never Were is a recurring series in which I create virtual trading cards for players missed in various sets. It is a concept I have borrowed from far too many to list, but I appreciate all of their efforts. Other creations of mine and many others can be found in the Custom Baseball Cards Facebook group (which is not just baseball cards, despite the name).
After playing his collegiate ball at Wake Forest, QB Norm Snead was selected by the Washington Redskins in the 1st round of the 1961 NFL draft and the 3rd round by the Buffalo Bills in the 1961 AFL draft. After signing with Washington, he played three seasons there, before joining the Philadelphia Eagles for seven seasons. Then he moved on to the Minnesota Vikings for one season, the New York Giants for 2+ seasons, the San Francisco 49ers for 1+ seasons and one final season back with the Giants. He threw for 30,979 yards, with 196 TDs and 257 interceptions.
For his efforts, Snead received cards from Topps or Philadelphia from 1962 through 1977, leaving only a 1977 "career capper" missing. On a side note, Snead had two versions of his 1974 Topps card. One was the regular issue and one was a special card for the Pro Draft football game.
I found a nice action shot and made a 1977 Topps card for Snead. That's running back #33 Doug Kotar with the backwards photo bomb.

Cards That Never Were: Steve Fuller Topps 1983, 1986-'87

Cards That Never Were is a recurring series in which I create virtual trading cards for players missed in various sets. It is a concept I have borrowed from far too many to list, but I appreciate all of their efforts.

Many of my card creations and thousands from others can be found in the Custom Baseball Cards Facebook group. One of the best and most active creator is Lynn and I go to him when the card requires more skill than I have, which is the case with a couple today.

After starring at Clemson, QB Steve Fuller was selected by the Kansas City Chiefs in the first round (23rd overall) of the 1979 NFL Draft. Fuller played four seasons with the Ciefs. He was with the Los Angeles Rams in 1983, but did not get into any games. He joined the Chicago Bears in 1984 and played a big role in their magical 1985 season. Fuller retired after the 1986 season with the Bears. All told, Fuller started 42 games, throwing for 7,156 yards and 28 touchdowns, with 41 interceptions.

For his efforts, Topps gave Fuller cards in their sets from 1880-'82 and 1985. That left 1983,-84 and '86-'87. As I wrote, Lynn helped by creating the very challenging 1983 card. He also made the 1986 card. I could have made that one, but since he already did, there was no need for me to duplicate his effort. I then created his 1987 career capper. This leaves only 1984, but since no pictures of Fuller with the Rams can be found, that remains understandably undone.

On the Beat With Damien Saint

My recurring coverage of Rocket Pro Wrestling turned to Damien Saint, the General Manager. My interview with him is at On the Beat With Damien Saint

As always, I asked about his path to wrestling, his favorites, his path to RPW and his role in RPW. Saint told some interesting stories, including one involving Jake "The Snake" Roberts.

As interesting as that all was, the best part of the interview for me was hearing Saint delve into the psychology involved in being a referee or a manager. It's unique insight, showing how much effort he puts into his craft.

This should be mandatory for newbie wrestling fans, but possibly even more for those who have disdain for wrestling. His thoughts are similar to those of Joey Roth of the World Famous Fabulous Idols. Coincidentally, Roth and the Idols are rumored to have an alliance with Saint, an allegation Saint denies.

Go to RocketProWrestling.com for more info on Saint and all the talent at RPW. Also, check TheEveryDayFan.com for more wrestling coverage.

On the Beat With Barbara Jordan

Earlier this week, I interviewed Barb Jordan. Despite being a softball legend, we didn't discuss the sport we both love. Instead, Barb updated me on the wonderful work she does with Always Bev. That interview is at On the Beat With Barb Jordan of Always Bev.

Barb's lengthy resume includes being a three-time first-team All-American, a three-time National Champion and an inductee in the California State University Northridge Hall of Fame.

Continuing her playing career, Barb played for the Redding Rebels in Women's Amateur Softball Association (ASA). Despite injuries incurred from being hit by pitches, Barb persevered and helped her team win multiple championships.

Perhaps her career highlight occurred during her eight seasons with Team USA. In the 1996 Olympics Summer Games, Barb was part of the Gold Medal-winning Team USA.

Barb would go on to coaching and later broadcasting. Despite that lengthy and impressive list, Barb's most important work isn't directly related to softball.

In 1988, Barb's sister Bev was tragically killed by her fiance. As the founder of Always Bev, Barb honors her sister, while raising awareness, educating and empowering. Simply stated Always Bev stands for Be Vigilant, but its meaning, scope and significance go well beyond that.

After a brief history of Always Bev, Barb talked about her initial training in started Always Bev and the regular lessons and instructions she takes. As I state in the interview, knowing Barb for years, I know of her thorough preparation and knew she approached Always Bev with that same focus.

I then brought up a few scenarios I recently experienced. A night at a comedy club, a photo opportunity at a comic con and an evening walking downtown all had connections to being vigilant. Barb gave her insight on each of these situations.

Barb finished by discussing The Ripple Effect, her podcast. With a variety of guests sharing their experiences on sex-trafficking, abuse, shooters and more, Barb continues teaching awareness and understanding.

I praise The Ripple Effect for its openness and directness, without being salacious, graphic or overly dramatic. The Ripple Effect features frank discussions and lessons everyone should hear.

I repeatedly have told Barb I love that her work teaches awareness not fear. Being aware, taking a few extra precautions and knowing your situation actually decreases fear.

It took a lot of courage for Barbara to take her sister's tragedy and make such a positive impact in the aftermath. The world can be a scary, dangerous place, but with a little extra caution, it can be a much safer place. There are so many distractions and time constraints, but nothing should prevent a few extra seconds for awareness. These moments can be difference-makers and life-savers.

I told Barb I would always welcome her back for update interviews, even if she has no new info to share. Her work is that important.

Bringing a little sports into this, in this era of social media and selfies, young athletes (especially women) are the focus of so much attention (some of which is unwanted). It is crucial for all to know how to handle themselves and their situations.

For more information on the wonderful work Always Bev does, go to AlwaysBev.com. Look for Always Bev – The Ripple Effect podcast for more news, tips, education and all things related to safety in every day life.

I have known Barbara for many years through our connection at National Pro Fastpitch. It was always fun seeing her and sharing our love of softball at Chicago Bandits Stadium. I respect Barbara for all she accomplished in softball, but my admiration has grown immensely.

I also thank TheEveryDayFan.com for allowing me to stretch the boundaries of sports coverage a bit for this topic. I do think there are important lessons for athletes and fans in what Barb does and I believe we are all better for Always Bev.

The Johngy "OR ELSE" Podcast - Ep. 41: Franki Pineapple

I few months ago, I stumbled online upon musician Franki Pineapple. Liking her sound, I did some research. Like it even more, I requested her appearance on The Johngy "OR ELSE" podcast, which she graciously granted. Our interview is at The Johngy "OR ELSE" Podcast - Ep. 41: Franki Pineapple.

Franki has a great story. In her youth, she was not just discouraged from a musical career, she was told she had no musical ability at all. She embarked on a career which eventually led her to the music industry, but not as a performer. Perhaps serendipity, perhaps fate, that position helped her get started as a performer. Her story has some twists and turns, but it is a story of overcoming odds and being a success.

I was really impressed with Franki. Her openness, honesty, rawness and vulnerability combine with confidence, charisma, talent and personality to make a multi-dimensional, complex person. She was willing to show all sides in our interview, as she has in her music.

After you watch our interview, go to FrankiPineapple.com to learn more about her. Check back here or on Spotify for more episodes of The Johngy "OR ELSE" podcast.

Friend Encounters: Dibs, Dwayne Peevy and Doug Bruno

Friend Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends meeting celebrities.

Today I feature three of DePaul University's finest. Athletic Director Dewayne Peevy and mascot DIBS joined women's basketball coach Doug Bruno at Wrigley Field for Bruno's ceremonial pitch. Bruno's "pitches" are usually aimed at high school players he is trying to recruit to DePaul.

As a recruiter and coach, Bruno is highly successful, as his record and Hall of Fame induction would indicate. The Blue Demons are scheduled to open their 2022-23 season November 9, hosting American University at Wintrust Arena.

After an excellent playing career at DePaul, Bruno had a couple stints coaching high school ball, before taking over DePaul for the 1976-77 season. After two seasons, he went on to coach the Chicago Hustle pro team followed by several season as men's assistant coach at Loyola (1981-88). He rejoined DePaul as women's basketball head coach for the 1988-89 season and has been leading the team ever since.

DIBS hasn't had that type of success. I have previously written about my dislike of the name DIBS (Demon in Blue Suit). I'll move on to Peevy.

A graduate of Montevallo in Alabama, Peevy has a lengthy resume in Media Relations and Sports Information. He joined DePaul in August 2020, after 12 years at Kentucky.

Peevy and Bruno have challenges as they enter the 22-23 season. DePaul lost a few key seniors, but they also saw a freshman have a breakout season. No matter what though, I am certain Bruno will lead his team to another successful and exciting season.

For more info on the team, go to DePaulBlueDemons.com. Look for my recurring coverage here, GlobalTravelerUSA.com, Patch.com and TheEveryDayFan.com.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #608 Cat Osterman & Aleshia Ocasio

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a weekly series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebrities wearing jerseys. Today, I continue my alphabetical march through all the MLB teams.

Olympic medalist pitcher Cat Osterman was born in Houston, Texas and starred at the University of Texas. She won a gold and two silver medlas in three Olympics. She also had a stellar pro career with several teams in National Pro Fastpitch and Athletes Unlimited, where she was the first year champ. I have had he pleasure of interviewing and knowing Osterman and she is a beast of a competitor and a sweetheart of a person. Se earned her Celebrity Jersey Card tossing a pitch for my Chicago White Sox.

Aleshia Ocasio was born in Florida and starred at the University of Florida. She went on to play two seasons for the National Pro Fastpitch Chicago Bandits, before moving on to the USSSA Pride and Athletes Unlimited, where she was the second season champ. Ocasio is part of a two sport marriage, being partnered with WNBA star Natasha Cloud. Ocasio got a Celebrity Jersey Card featuring pictures from ace photog and friend Jade Hewitt. I loved both pictures so much, I made two cards for AO.

On the Beat With Yanny K.

Yesterday, I interviewed Yanny K., a veteran of several seasons with the Legends Football League (now the X League and formerly the Lingerie Football League). That interview is at On the Beat With Yanny K.
Yanny started by discussing her unusual path to football. Prevented from playing sports in her youth by her mother, Yanny did not play football until she was 21 and a mother herself. Once she started though, she was hooked, playing flag football at first, before joining the LFL.
I always like to ask players about the somewhat controversial uniforms to allow the women athletes to express their thoughts and Yanny had a bunch. While her opinion echoed that of the other players I have interviewed, she brought a unique perspective, including a very empowering, positive look, while still favoring the transition to more protective uniforms.
She continued by discussing being a role model for her young athlete son, as well as young girl athletes. She is happy and proud to be part of the progression of women's sports and women in all sports. Previous generations didn't have the options she has and future generations will have even more options.
After several seasons in the LFL, Yanny took a break from the league last season, but did not rule out a future return. She is still playing in flag football leagues.
She is also busy with her son Kevin, a rising young athlete. The proud mom talked about his progress, his future and his branding. Kevin is already getting noticed with rave reviews. Mom and dad encourage and will help him achieve whatever he can in sports and life.
Away from football and every day life, Yanny has picked up roller skating. A big fan of the sport, I asked her about her potential future on the derby track. Yanny did not rule out the possibility, stating she had looked into it already. Not at her desired skill level at that time, she wanted to wait until she was ready to compete. With enough time on skates, Yanny might explore the possibility in the future. For the record, I think her athleticism, look and charisma would make her a fantastic derby skater.
Before we ended, Yanny gave a shout out to her son, encouraging anyone to follow his exploits on social media. I extended an invite to mother and son for a future interview.
Thank you to Yanny for her time. Check back here and EveryDayFan.com for coverage of women's football and all sports.

On the Beat With Loyola Women's Basketball

Earlier this week, I took part in the Atlantic 10 Media Day session featuring the Loyola Ramblers Head Coach Allison Guth, along with senior players Julia Hoefling and Sam Galanopoulos. That session can be found at On the Beat With Loyola WBB Media Day.
The Atlantic 10 Conference held Media Day for women's basketball, featuring individual sessions with the coach and two players from each school. Conference newcomer Loyola University was represented by new Head Coach Allison Guth and senior players Sam Galanopoulos and Julia Hoefling.
Chicago area native Coach Guth returns to Loyola. Where she served as an assistant 2005-2007. She was also an assistant at Missouri, DePaul, Yale and Northwestern, before being named Head Coach at Yale in 2015. Prior to embarking on a coaching career, Guth was a three-year letterwinner at the University of Illinois.
Guth takes over a Loyola team that was 18-12 last season. She inherits a team with four seniors. She also gets incoming seniors Emma and Sophia Nolan, who transferred from St. John's.
Since her arrival, Guth has showed a lot of energy and positivity. She has discussed the importance of family, friends and support, thanking both those around her and all of her players. This was all very evident in her introductory press session in the offseason and she reinforced it in this media session.
Guth discussed what to expect from her and the team. She talked about the challenges for Loyola in their new conference. The Ramblers previously played in the Missouri Valley Conference. She discussed adding the Nolan sisters and relying on her seniors for leadership as the team adjusts to the new coach and new conference.
Representing those seniors, Hoefling and Galanopoulos stated they are excited about the challenges and ready to lead. Both discussed the challenges and rewards of new coaching and new conference.
During her three years at Loyola, guard Galanopoulos played 86 games, averaging 5.7 points and 2.6 rebounds and assists in 25.6 minutes. Last season, she had career highs, averaging 7.0 points, 3.3 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 29.9 minutes.
Forward Hoefling also had career highs last season. She started 29 games, and averaged 4.5 points, 5.2 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 23.8 minutes.
Guards Anna Brown and Jala Johnson are the other two returning seniors. The addition of the Nolan sisters will create competition for playing time, hopefully resulting in everyone rising to the challenge.
Loyola opens their exhibition season hosting Purdue Northwest Sunday, October 30. They open their regular season at Western Michigan Monday, November 7. They also play at Milwaukee, before their home opener Wednesday, November 16 against Virginia.
Much like at Guth's introductory press conference, I expect the stands at Gentile Arena to be filled with family and friends ushering the new era. I will also be there, in media row.
Follow my coverage all season right here, GlobalTravelerUSA.com and EveryDayFan.com. Go to LoyolaRamblers.com for more info on the team.

On the Beat With Jack McDowell

Earlier this week, I interviewed former Major League Baseball pitcher Jack McDowell. Recently jumping back into music, Black Jack talked about his latest endeavor, as well as a little baseball.

McDowell had an excellent MLB career. Selected by the Chicago White Sox in the first round (fifth overall) of the 1987 MLB draft, Black Jack went on to a 12-year career with the Sox, New York Yankees, Cleveland Indians and Anaheim Angels. Along the way, he won the Cy Young Award in1993, when he went 22-10, and was an All-Star three times.

Pretty open about his disdain for some of the changes in baseball, McDowell gave me his reasoning. As a youth coach, McDowell is passing down all he learned and is helping to grow the game for future generations.

Being a memorabilia collector, I had to talk to him about his recently released bobblehead. Licensed by McDowell, Autograph1 and the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum, it shows McDowell in mid pitch, with an actual BlackJack card combo behind him. This cool bobblehead sits on my book bobblehead shelf. McDowell reflected on seeing himself in bobblehead form, while telling a fun story involving his children and bobbleheads.

During his career, he dabbled in music, releasing several CDs. While his work with Stickfigure was a side project, it was one he took very seriously. McDowell’s musical journey really started during his time at Stanford. After signing with the Sox, he couldn’t play collegiate ball, so he turned to music.

Although I didn’t get to see Stickfigure play in person, I have several Stickfigure CDs. I never looked at McDowell as a player who put out music. He was (and is) a legit musician. Now, after a lengthy absence from the music scene, McDowell is back.

BlackJackian’s “Replant Our Lives” is a major labor of love for McDowell. It is also a solo effort on every level. McDowell wrote all the songs, played all the instruments, created the artwork, burned the CDs and is selling them through his Facebook page.

He stopped short of committing to producing more CDs, but I got the feeling music is so much a part of him it has to happen. I definitely think he’ll continue writing music, but I hope he shares it with fans through future CDs.

Thank you to McDowell for his time. Also, thanks for a lot of great memories for this Chicagoan.

Gary Fencik and Doug Plank

When I was a kid, he Chicago Bears were basically Walter Payton. The only other consistent bright spots came from Doug Plank and Gary Fencik on defense.
No. 45 (Fencik) and No. 46 (Plank) were terrors on defense. I am biased, but I don't recall any safety duo hitting harder than they did. They might not have gotten a lot of interceptions, but they were feared by receivers.
Plank played for eight seasons, while Fencik played 12, including the 1985 Super Bowl season. They played seven seasons as a tandem. For those seven seasons, the Bears made the playoffs twice as wildcards, but the team was pretty mediocre. Fencik and Plank gave fans reasons to cheer the defense.
Fencik went on to have a successful career in business. Plank became a coach. The Bears dominating Super Bowl era defense was named the $^ after him.
I met the pair at a small, but great memorabilia show in Rosemont. Meeting the two together was so cool. It seemed natural they should be together.
As agent Mark Childers took my picture with the pair, Fencik questioned why I didn't get autographs. With all due respect, I appreciated the offer, but the picture is all I wanted. This picture means a lot to me. It brings me back to my childhood days when watching the Bears was frustrating, but Chicago sports was my main concern in life. I immediately texted the pic to my childhood friend Tom.
The promoters have more shows scheduled. I hope they continue to have former players like Plank and Fencik.

Bobby Hull

I recently wrote about meeting Doug Plank and Gary Fencik, two of my favorite Chicago Bears. At the same memorabilia show, I met Chicago Blackhawks Hall of Famer Bobby Hull.
Because Hull left the Hawks after the 1971-72 season and the Hawks really weren't on television then, I don't have much of a memory of Hull in the Indianhead sweater. He played several years in the WHA and eventually made it back to the NHL, but not with the Hawks, although that was expected, as the Topps hockey card would indicate.
Hull has had issues off the ice, but on it, he was one of the best, as was his son Brett, who also should have been a Hawk a few times. Even my mom was a big fan of Hull's and the Hawks in general.
Hull looked like he was really enjoying himself as he met the fans at the show. Naturally, the fans were excited to meet the Hall of Famer. Except for a few fans, who seemed to be there to get autographs for resale, the majority just wanted a picture or autograph for personal collections.

Friend Encounters: Olin Kreutz and Scott Bridges

Friend Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends meeting celebrities.

I met Scott Bridges because he owns Bridges Scoreboard, a great sports bar in Griffith, Indiana, near my dad's home. My dad is a regular at Bridges.

The Chicago Bears season isn't going as well as we hoped, but that doesn't stop fans from enjoying the team. Bridges offers a special way to celebrate the Bears through Danny Mac's Friday Tailgate Show, broadcast live there. Longtime broadcaster Dan McNeil hosts a fantastic show all about the Bears and he usually brings a former Bears player with him.

While today I feature Scott and former Bears center Olin Kreutz, the next guest announced is Super Bowl champ Jay Hilgenberg on October 28. Additionally, although the show runs noon-2 pm, Hilgy will stay an additional hour to meet and greet fans.

Follow Bridges Scoreboard on Facebook for more info, including upcoming sports guests. You don't need to wait for a special event though. Their food is top notch and the service is awesome.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #607 Gable Steveson & Sara Fuller

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a weekly series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebrities wearing jerseys. Today, I continue my alphabetical march through all the MLB teams.

Retired freestyle and folkstyle wrestler Gable Steveson was born in Indiana, but starred at the University of Minnesota. Steveson won a gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. He became the second gold medalist to sign with the WWE (after Kurt Angle), but has yet to wrestle. He got his Celebrity Jersey Card while tossing out a first pitch. Id guess he pinned it.

Texas born Sarah Fuller was a star goalkeeper for Vanderbilt, when she vaulted to fame when she became the first woman to play in a Power Five Conference football game, kicking off for the Commodores. Later that season, she became the first woman to score, when she kicked an extra point. Fuller currently plays for Minnesota Aurora FC. She received a Celebrity Jersey Card by tossing a first pitch for the Minnesota Twins. I bet she got a kick out of that.

Cards That Never Were: Otis Sistrunk Topps 1973

Cards That Never Were is a recurring series in which I create virtual trading cards for players missed in various sets over the years. It is a concept I have borrowed from far too many to list, but I appreciate all of their efforts.
Otis Sistrunk did not play college football. After high school, Sistrunk joined the Marines, then played semi-pro football, before being signed by the Norfolk Neptunes of the Continental Football League. In 1972, at the age of 25, Sistrunk signed with the Oakland Raiders. He played seven seasons with the Raiders, appearing in one Pro Bowl and winning one Super Bowl. After retiring, he wrestled for a while in the NWA.
For his efforts, he received Topps cards 1974-1979. That left a missing rookie card. I found a nice picture of Sistrunk in action to give him that missing card.

I Re-Found Scarlet Bordeaux at Blizzard Brawl 2017

With Great Lakes Championship Wrestling's Blizzard Brawl returning Saturday, December 3, I started doing pre-event coverage. In the process, I found a forgotten gem.
As you have seen over the last 14 years of this site, I have met a lot of celebrities from all fields of entertainment. Occasionally, I have forgotten one. Such was the case with Scarlett Bordeaux.
A native of Chicago, Bordeaux debuted in 2012. Since then, she has wrestled for Luche Libre, Impact and others, including WWE, where she currently is. She ranked 89 of the top 100 female wrestlers in the PWI Female 100 of 2019.
I have been going to Blizzard Brawl in Wisconsin for years. SuperFriend and wrestling promoter David Herro runs a great show and I meet so many wrestlers there, one of whom was Bordeaux, only I completely forgot. Most would think it's no big deal and in the grand scheme it isn't, but i get nutty about these things.
I was talking to a bud about local wrestlers and I mentioned I never met Bordeaux, despite her being fairly available on the wrestling scene on and off over the years. Somehow, she had escaped my camera and me. Then one day, I was reorganizing files on my pc and I came across the Blizzard Brawl folder. There she was.
As most things are with me, this was bittersweet. I am glad I did meet her (and I do remember the actual encounter now), but I wonder if I am forgetting others I met. I'm guessing there are a few, but "then again too few to mention," as the song goes.
I won't go too far with this. I will just be happy I did rediscover the picture with Bordeaux and I will take her name off the list I want to meet.
Go to the GLCW Facebook page for news and updates on Blizzard Brawl 2022. Also, check here for my recurring coverage and possibly more "discovered" encounters.

On the Beat at New York Comic Con 2022

I spent a long four day weekend at the New York Comic Con. My full report is on the Patch at On the Beat at the New York Comic Con.
Produced by ReedPop, the same folks behind C2E2, NYCC is arguably the biggest comic con in the country. San Diego Comic Con is has been the biggest, but I heard NYCC passed it. that's unconfirmed, but either way, both are huge.
This was my second year at NYCC and it won't be my last. NYCC 2021 was a bit scaled back, still in the grip of the pandemic, but I still thought it was almost overwhelming. Then I saw this year's NYCC. It was immense, huge, crazy, busy, but mostly fun. It took me about a day to figure out the lay of the land. Even with that, the mere glut of people sometimes made getting from one spot to another very difficult and slow. This did make me strategize, to limit my need to go to different rooms multiple times. I'd make one long loop in each area, then maybe return at the end of the day if I really needed something.
I met so many cool creators and celebrities. I also ran into several friends from all over the country. As usual, I will sprinkle in those stories here and there, so as not to dump them all at once.
Go to NewYorkComicCon.com for more info. Check back here for my recurring coverage of NYCC and C2E2.

Dana Adiva at Blizzard Brawl 2019

Great Lakes Championship Wrestling presents Blizzard Brawl Saturday, December 3 at the Waukesha County Expo Center. The big annual events attracts wrestling talent and fans from all over the midwest.
After years of missing her on the Chicago wrestling scene, I finally met Dana Adiva at Blizzard Brawl a few years ago. It's funny that it took me going to Waukesha to meet a Chicago area talent, but at least it finally happened.
While not really active on the wrestling scene these days, Dana is still popular. She was involved on several levels in wrestling, as well as a star on a reality show several years back. She is also as nice as she is beautiful. It was a pleasure to finally meet her.
The guest list for Blizzard Brawl 2022 hasn't been announced yet. Of course, I have no idea if Dana will be involved or in the crowd, but many other wrestling past and present stars will be there. #SuperFriend David Herro and the GLCW run a fantastic show. It's always a "must see" event for me.
Go to the GLCW Facebook page for updates and info. Also, check here for my recurring coverage.

On the Beat With Missa Kate

On The Johngy "OR ELSE" Podcast, Tommy Else and I interviewed wrestler Miss Kate. You can find that at Ep. 39: "Missa Kate" and all of our episodes on Spotify.

I was excited about this interview because of two main reasons. First, while we have both floated around the Chicago wrestling scene, I never had a real chance to talk to her. In fact, I only saw her wrestle once and that was at the recent Women's Wrestling Army event.

Additionally, the interview took on more significance as she was just announced as part of a three way match (along with Shazza McKenzie) and Billie Starkz at 2econd Wrestling's event on October 27. A main event featuring three women for the company's main title is quite an accomplishment. Starkz is a credible champion, but Missa Kate and Shazza are worthy challengers. This should be a great match.

In our interview, Missa Kate talked about all of that and more, and explained the origin of her wrestling name. I was quite impressed with her thought process in and out of wrestling. She is an interesting young woman who gave us a fascinating interview.

On behalf of Tommy, I thank her for her time and consideration. Look for her on social media and in wrestling rings all over.

Friend Encounters: Adam Page and Tony Feddeler at Squared Circle Expo

Friend Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

Today, I feature my pal Tony Feddeler and wrestler Adam Page at Squared Circle Expo 2022. With SCX 2023 just six months away, it is time to start planning that trip.

I have often written about being envious of some of the celebs Tony has met. While I am envious again of him meeting Page, this one was my fault. How did I miss meeting Page?

My excuse is the number of wrestling stars and legends at SCX II. With more than 65 wrestlers doing meet-and-greets, at times it was dizzying in a good way. I actually kept a list of who I met and needed to meet, yet somehow Page was missed. I can't be upset though, because I did meet so many interesting wrestlers.

Page debuted in 2008, wrestling on the indy scene, before joining Ring of Honor in 2011. He eventually made his way to All Elite Wrestling in 2019. At AEW, he has won the World Championship and the Tag Championship (with Kenny Omega). He also won several special matches and awards. He is a young veteran with a lot of potential.

Tony is a slightly older veteran, with his own list of accomplishments. Worth noting (at least to me) is his support of Johngy's Beat, including sporting the tshirt many times. Don't tell him, but I'd still value his friendship even if he didn't wear the shirt.

This was our first real trip together and it was a blast. Hopefully, it is the first of more to come.

SCX III runs April 7-8 in Indianapolis. It really is one of the best and smoothest-run conventions I have ever attended. Its debut in 2021 was amazing, yet somehow SCX 2022 topped it. SCX III promises to be the best one yet.

Go to SquaredCircleX.com for more info on SCX 2023. Also, check here for my recurring coverage.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #606 Jalen Rose & Dylan Larkin

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a weekly series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebrities wearing jerseys. Today, I continue my alphabetical march through all the MLB teams.

Born, raised and schooled in Michigan, Jalen Rose was part of the "Fab Five" basketball team at the University of Michigan. Rose went on to have a stellar 13 year NBA career and is now a broadcaster. Rose earned a Celebrity Jersey Card tossing a first pitch for his home state Detroit Tigers.

Dylan Larkin was also born in Michigan and starred at the University of Michigan. He was selected by his home state Red Wings in the first round of the 2014 NHL draft. Making his debut in the 2015-16 season, Larkin will be entering his eighth season with the team. He shares a Celebrity Jersey Card with Paws, mascot of the Detroit Tigers.

Pinfalls: WWE Extreme Rules 2022

My podcast partner Tommy Else and I are back with Pinfalls: WWE Extreme Rules 2022. As always, Tommy and I analyze the matches and make our predictions..

WWE Extreme Rules airs Saturday, October 8 on the Peacock Network live from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Being held in the Wells Fargo Center, this is the first Extreme Rules event taking place on a Saturday and in October. Debuting in 2009, Extreme Rules has never taken place in October nor on a Saturday.

As of this writing, there are six matches, each having a specific stipulation.

Fight Pit Match with Daniel Cormier special guest referee

Matt Riddle vs. Seth Rollins

Strap Match

Drew McIntyre vs. Karrion Kross with Scarlett

“I Quit” Match

Edge vs. Finn Balor with The Judgment Day

Good Old Fashioned Donnybrook Match

The Brawling Brutes Sheamus, Ridge Holland and Butch vs. Imperium Gunther, Ludwig Kaiser and Giovanni Vinci

Raw Women's Championship Ladder Match

Bianca Belair (c) and Asuka vs. Bayley

WWE SmackDown Women's Championship Extreme Rules Match

Liv Morgan(c) vs. Ronda Rousey

On the last Pinfalls, we agreed and correctly picked the outcomes on all six matches we reviewed. Heading into Extreme Rules, Tommy has a light lead in 2022. This year, Tommy is 27-23, while I am even at 25-25. Once again, there are six matches and once again we have a lot of agreement. You'll see just how much agreement though when you watch the video. I don't give out Pinfalls spoilers.

Make your own predictions and watch Pinfalls to see how yours compare to ours. Enjoy WWE Extreme Rules and see how we all do. Check Every Day Fan for the results and other coverage.

Anna Jay at Squared Circle Expo II

We are now six months away from Squared Circle Expo III, which runs April 7-8 in Indianapolis, Indiana. My coverage her is ongoing, but my first bit for the Patch is at Squared Circle Expo III Is 6 Months Away.
All Elite Wrestling's Anna Jay was one of the most popular wrestlers at SCX II last year. Despite her long lines, she made sure everyone walked away satisfied with their experience.
That is typical of the entire wrestler lineup at SCX. Collectively, I have never seen a more fan-friendly celebrity lineup at any convention. There were more than 65 wrestling stars and all were just fantastic.
The guest list hadn't been fully announced yet, but the promoters have revealed Kurt Angle as the first guest. When you start with Kurt Angle, you know the list is going to be gold. It's true. It's darn true!
Go to SquaredCircleX.com for more info on SCX III. Go to AllEliteWrestling.com for more info on Anna and all AEW talent. Check back here for my recurring coverage and updates.

Danhausen at New York Comic Con 2021

Last year, I attended my first New York Comic Con. Produced by Reed Pop, who also produced C2E2, it was the biggest comic con I have ever attended and it was downsized because of the pandemic. This year, it returns today through Sunday and I will be "On the Beat" again.
One of the most interesting celebrities I met at NYCC was Danhausen. Born Donovan Danhausen, he is a wrestler on the rise. He debuted in 2013 and is currently wrestling for All Elite Wrestling.
Danhausen is a second generation celebrity encounter for me. His father is Brian Danhausen, an author and artist. I met the elder Danhausen a few times at the Motor City Comic Con.
When I met Danhausen, I told him about talking to his dad years before and how his dad mentioned his young wrestling son. For me it was cool to see him doing so well. He seemed genuinely touched and thanked me. The next day, he thanked me again when I saw him. I think after meeting hundreds of wresting fans at NYCC, he was probably happy to have the change of pace to discuss something else.
NYCC 2021 had a large wrestling presence. This year, Danhausen returns, along with Sting, Mick Foley, Jack "Jungle Boy" Perry, Britt Baker and more. Go to AllEliteWrestling.com for more info on Danhausen and his AEW mates. Check NewYorkComicCon.com for updates and scheduling on NYCC 2022.

On the Beat With Jade Austin of the Chicago Blitz

X League Chicago Blitz safety Jade Austin had an interesting season. Preseason reports called her “the most complete safety” in the league. A few months later, she fulfilled that promise hoisting the X Cup, while being named the championship game MVP. Yesterday, I talked to her about the amazing season and more at On the Beat With Jade Austin for EveryDayFan.com.

A native of Wisconsin, Austin played a lot of amateur sports, but never played competitive football until she tried out for the Blitz. A few years back, that tryout probably would have been with the Green Bay Chill, but with the Chill gone, Austin crossed the border to pursue her football goal. Wisconsin's loss is Chicago's gain.

The pandemic derailed her journey, as the X League went on hiatus. When the league returned, Austin and the Blitz were more than ready. Despite the lack of games, the Blitz stayed in game mode, preparing for the return.

Austin talked about the challenges and advantages of the long wait for football to restart. As is the history of the Blitz (Bliss), the team is known for its preparedness. She also candidly discussed the small amount of games last season and we both agreed, we hope for more games next season.

Similarly, Austin talked about the preseason appreciation she received. I questioned if the high praise and expectations put more pressure on her or her opponents. Austin discussed both possibilities. She stated she felt her game did not fully come together until the championship game though. The X Cup MVP trophy shows she did fulfill expectations.</p>

As I did when I interviewed Emma Vanderheyden, her Blitz teammate, I had to joke a bit about championship rings, as I showed off my 2014 ring, courtesy of former Coach Keith Hac and the 2014 team. Austin and the rest of the team have not received their 2022 rings yet, but I'm sure the shiny jewelry will be well-received when they do.

I ended with the big question of her return in 2023. Blitz fans will be happy to know Austin, like Vanderheyden, plans on returning to defend the X League title. After I stated my intention of seeing her at practice next season, she joked we can compare rings then.I thank Austin for her time and consideration. I also appreciate her part in bringing another championship to Chicago. Check back here on The Every Day Fan for more similar interviews and our coverage of the X League.

The Johngy "OR ELSE" Podcast Ep. 38: "Hardcore" Heather Owens

The Johngy "OR ELSE" podcast is back and this episode is hardcore. Tommy Else and I interviewed "Hardcore" Heather Owens about two wrestling shows she is promoting, along with other fun stuff. That interview is at On the Beat With "Hardcore" Heather Owens.

A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, “Hardcore” Heather Owens retired from pro wrestling in-ring competition in 2019, but she hasn't strayed far from the ring. Heather segued into different roles in wrestling.

A multi-sports athlete in high school, Heather was trained by Cody Hawk, Les Thatcher and Matt Stryker. After debuting in 2005, Heather earned many titles along the way, including the United Wrestling Alliance/United Wrestling Federation Vixen's Championship seven times. Heartland Wrestling Association named her Woman of the Year in 2006.

Tommy and I first met Heather many years ago when we were all with Resistance Pro Wrestling. Heather was one of the staples of RPro's strong Women's division.

Heather is the Co-Chair of the Cincinnati Pride Athletics Committee at Cincinnati Pride. Through that, Heather is putting on a wrestling show. Cincinnati Pride presents Pride! Power! Pro Wrestling! on Friday, November 4. Described as a “drag and wrestling extravaganza,” Pride! Power! Wrestling! will take over Humble Monk Brewing Co. in Cincinnati.

Hosted by Brooklyn Steele-Tate, the night will feature drag performances between matches from Stixen Stones, Kiara Chimera, Brock Leah and more. Wrestling talent includes Ace Perry, Hayley Shadows, GG Jacobs, Cameron Saturn, Jack Andrews, IPA, Chris Copeland, Juniper Gates and several others.

Working the other side of a wrestling show, Heather discusses the new challenges and rewards. She intends Pride! Power! Pro Wrestling! to be a yearly event.

Another yearly wrestling event involving Heather is Squared Circle Expo, a huge wrestling convention which debuted in 2020. Run by Heather, husband Eddie Gonzales (who she married in 2007) and friends Adolfo and Carrie Dorta, SCE is a yearly two-day event in Indianapolis, Indiana.

SCE III runs Friday, April 7 and Saturday, April 8, 2023 at the Wyndham Indianapolis West. Contained entirely within the Wyndham, SCE III will feature all day meet-and-greets, panels, Q&As and more. There will also be full wrestling cards each night. Last year, more than 60 wrestling stars of the past and present were in the guest lineup. Olympic legend and WWE and TNA Hall of Famer Kurt Angle was just the first guest announcement for this year. He is guaranteed to be followed by dozens of great names.

In addition to promoting these wrestling events, Heather has dabbled a bit as a referee, including a match at SCE. She insists she is fully retired from actively wrestling though.

Heather has also co-hosted a couple popular podcasts. Pop Drunk with hubby Ed, features the couple discussing the world of Funko Pop collectibles (of which they have several hundred), beer and other fun topics. The Best Friend Show podcast has Heather and friend Jade chatting about pretty much anything.

While her podcasting has slowed down, all previous episodes are still available on major podcast platforms. All are still relevant, but more important, they are all highly entertaining.

Heather talked about all of this and several other fun topics, like the Cincinnati Bengals, "The Golden Girls" and cats. One of Heather's cats made a cameo appearance, along with Tommy's cat.

We thank Heather for her time and we look forward to updates about both wrestling events. Go to the Power! Pride! Pro Wrestling! Facebook page and the Squared Circle Expo Facebook page for info on those great events. Check back here, The Johngy "OR ELSE" podcast and TheEveryDayFan.com for all of that and more!

Friend Encounters: Olivia Miles and Mikaela Dokes

Friend Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities. With college basketball season upon us, I feature one of my youngest, but most talented friends.

Mikaela Dokes is an amazing young basketball player. With her father Walter encouraging her all the way, Mikaela is quickly becoming a bit of a sensation. Make no mistake though, proud papa isn't pushing young Mikaela. The dream is all hers.

Last year, I had the pleasure of interviewing the pair. I was impressed my Mikaela's deication and her abilities. The father-daughter bond was heart-warming.

Late last year, papa Walter treated Mikaela to a Notre Dame women's basketball game. She met several of the players (see previous Friend Encounters), including Olivia Miles.

Guard Miles has played in 39 games, averaging 13.0 points, 5.3 rebounds and 6.7 assists per game. Highly recruited out of New Jersey, Miles seems to have a bright future with the Fighting Irish.

Mikaela also seems to have a bright future, although where she ends up playing is to be determined. If you watch the interview though, you will hear where the plan is.

Follow Mikaela on the Mikaela Dokes Athlete Facebook page. Also, check our interview at On the Beat With Mikaela Dokes.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #605 Jason Rudd & Robert Smigel

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a weekly series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebrities wearing sports jerseys. Today, I continue to march alphabetically through all MLB teams.

Born in New York, Robert Smigel honed his comedic skills in Chicago. Smigel has been a writer on Saturday Night Live, as well as The Conan O'Brien Show. He has gone on to write, act and do voice work in many other projects. Smigel played in a Big Slick charity softball game in Kansas City to earn his Celebrity Jersey Card.

New Jersey native Paul Rudd's family moved to Kansas City when he was 10. The actor was named People magazine's "Sexiest Man Alive" in 2021. Perhaps even bigger, he got a Celebrity Jersey Card from his appearance in a Big Slick charity softball game.

Cards That Never Were: Lyle Blackwood Topps 1977, '81 & '87

Cards That Never Were is a recurring series in which I create virtual trading cards for players missed in various sets. It is a concept I have borrowed from far too many to list, but I appreciate all of their efforts. More of my creations and a lot of others (and not just baseball cards) can be found in the Custom Baseball Cards Facebook group.

A while back I filled in some missing cards for former NFL safety Lyle Blackwood. I had three still missing, but have since been able to create those still missing cards, with a little help. Lynn from the aforementioned FB group created a 1977 card for Blackwood and I created an '81 and an '87. Combined with my previous cards, Blackwood now has all of his rightful cards.

On a related note, Blackwood's '87 card mate is his brother Glenn, who played alongside Lyle for several years with the Dolphins. I previously noted that Lyle and Glenn appeared on a "Brothers" card in 1982, but Lyle did not have a separate card, which annoyed me immensely as a collector back then.
